Thursday, October 30, 2008 (10/30/2008 02:04:00 PM) - Al My first impression of Ken Macha...sorry, I don't do impressions. Actually, it's that Macha's hair is very white. Doug must like the fact that Ken looks a lot older than himself. Doug says Macha has been in the game for 35 years (a lifer), and has also been around many good young players on their way up. Has never had a losing record, and has always finished 1st or 2nd as a bench coach and a manager. Doug helps Ken on with jersey #40 (always a very awkward moment for 2 guys), as Chris Capuano "is still on the roster" with Macha's preferred #39. Ken says his "style" is to go with the players, get them as prepared as you can, as they win and lose the games for you. Always tried to improve the players he had as the season wore on. Will talk to Doug about coaching staff right away. First question about his relationship with players, including Jason Kendall. Says a manager's job is not to be friends with players, it's to win. Interviewed with 5 teams before '03, ended up taking the A's job because he was familiar with the team. Have talked to Doug about Sveum, and Terry Francona told him Dale is very good. Dale is in a unique circumstance, which will make him stronger, and if he returns and helps the team win, he'll get a chance, as Doug and Ken will both heartily recommend him. Dale has not decided whether to return as of this minute, Doug said he spoke with him today and the invitation is open. Tries to explain his relationship with Beane, which sounds a bit stressful at best. Will play whoever is productive. Any problem with Kendall or others is well overblown. Jason will not be any issue at all. Suppan knows Macha and gave Doug a positive review. Nice to have a core of young players who came up together. No reason for a 2 year contract, Doug made him an offer and Ken accepted it. Doug hinted at he never likes a manager going into the last season of a deal. Ken says playing for a run early in the game "helps the other team", but late in the game, bunting or "small ball" makes sense. {pause as I wipe the sweat from my forehead} Doug says both he and Ken are boring people because they love baseball and spend so much time on the game. The first batter Doug ever threw to in batting practice was Macha. Nice to get a fresh perspective on players, Doug says guys like Sedar and Skaalen have seen the young guys progress, and it'll be nice to get a new pair of eyes. Macha has a background of development, and his opinions will be valued. 10/30/2008 02:04:00 PM |
