Sunday, October 05, 2008 (10/05/2008 11:25:00 PM) - Al "We definitely want to keep Doug Melvin," Attanasio said. Sounds like Doug returns unless he does not want to. Of course, no one really knows how much it bothered him to get rid of Ned when he did except Doug, as most folks feel it was Mark A's call, or at least most of it. I can't imagine Doug wanting to "build it up again", so I would assume his options would be to retire, sign an extension, or tell MA he'll be back for one more year and after that he's done. I'll be going over what I feel will take place this offseason soon after Doug has a postseason news conference...I'm not sure if they'll have that this week or wait until after they have their annual end of the season meetings. I would guess that between 17-20 of the 25 guys that ended August will be back, and almost anyone can name 3-4 of them who won't be. The starting point is whether or not the Brewers are going to make an offer to Sabathia, and if Cameron's option is picked up...one may well depend on the other. I would guess we'll hear the phrase "professional hitter" at some point, and they'll add a pitcher or two...as will almost everyone. The push for '09 begins...now.
