Maldonado, Gomez, and Schafer added to roster for tomorrow's game.

More to follow I'm sure, after Nashville's season ends Monday. Even though Wolf struggled, he still went 5, saving the bullpen nicely.

I did not think the Crew had an open 40 man spot, and Schafer will have to be added. That said, I think Kintzler can just be moved to the 60 day DL.

Stimulus money? Look no further.

The irony is, green companies have no chance without massive subsidies from the government...and sometimes, don't make it even with massive taxpayer sweat and tears rolling in.

Roenicke far more aggressive than usual on getting a PH for Wolf because he knows he'll have reinforcements tomorrow.

Green looks far shorter than I had guessed. After looking crappy on the fastballs, he lines a change-up into Rf.

The were suggesting they bench Yuni tonight. Once again, proof of why casual fans need to stick to second guessing...because they are very limited at common sense and knowledge of the game, they suck at first guessing.

You know, when you aren't aware a guy has been on the DL for two plus months, the idea you pass yourself off as anything other than the village idiot is hilarious.

(8/31/2011 08:13:00 PM) - Al

I'm a bit puzzled why casuals are suggesting they have someone cover 1B on a double. Seriously? The Cards did a poor job of baserunning, but they were able to outrun Prince back to 1B. I'm not sure what exactly the plan is there.

Of course, DiFelice is on the DL and hasn't pitched in 2.5 months, and Dillard can't come back until the 5th, but hey, someone has to put the "asual" in casual fan.

Yuni actually does have a positive UZR the past month or so, as he was -10/11, and is now -8.9 runs on the year. Of course, you can't argue with the "I watch every game and I know what I see crowd," but you really can't argue with ignorance regardless.

Brewers still talking about upgrades today but aren't close on any

Gonzalez went to TEX for a PTBNL, but Mike Brantley was a PTBNL as well, and he's 24 and a starting LF in the majors. Usually, the obligatory PTBNL isn't very good, but some are. I realize Doug will not overpay, and that's a good feeling.

The Crew now ranks 9th in UZR and 6th in DRS.

Teams (more specifically, players) do make errors, but that happens on every team. You really have two choices, you can either believe the metrics, which rank Gomez as a top CF, so they seem to work, or you can believe the "Well, I know because I watch every game" crowd, which is akin to a parent saying, "Because I said so."

One reliever who could be dealt today: Orioles lefty Mike Gonzalez. Rangers are among the teams looking for bullpen

Giants DFA Miguel Tejada and Aaron Rowand.

Looks like the finger pointing in SF is happening now. Neither has had a good season, but Rowand still is decent versus LHP, for example. I would assume this is a 40 man crunch as the Giants try to add a couple players to make a run.

Tonight's game is a good example of why the Crew will have plenty of extra players on hand as of 9/1. All that silliness about "team chemistry" and "you don't want guys sitting around" will quickly get vetoed because Roenicke wants guys to actually manage, rather than have four guys on the of which was "used" when sent up to PH then pulled back.

8/30/2011 11:28:00 PM

(8/30/2011 10:35:00 PM) - Al

Morgan and Hart's near misses are getting mentioned non-stop, but Braun's liner that was caught by a sliding Berkman and Fielder's drive to the warning track were all it took, when you add in the mistakes. Those hits have found grass all season.

I'm surprised Yuni bunted, as when the defense is playing that tight, there's hardly any way a bunt can be successful, unless it is killed just perfectly, something Yuni is not going to do.

Not only was Moneyball a best selling book, the movie looks very entertaining, for baseball fans and non-fans alike. The great thing about it is, it still explains what small market, cash poor teams have to do...think out of the box, look for players with talent but warts, and find a way to compete by spending less.

Since the A's did it with OBP, other teams have done the same thing with defense, but the most popular remains spending money on the draft and young players, both pre-arby and pre-FA.

Brewers going to the Arizona Fall League:

Zealous Wheeler, Logan Schafer, Scooter Gennett, and Kentrail Davis, as well as pitchers Jed Bradley, Brandon Kintzler, Santo Manzanillo, Dan Meadows, and Cody Scarpetta.

Brandon, Logan, and Cody have all spent time on the DL this year, so it's a nice opportunity for them to get some extra PA's. How 1st round pick Bradley fares may determine where he opens the 2012 campaign.

Angels led TX by 9.5 games & SEA by 12.5 on 8/20/95, only to finish a game back of SEA in the AL West.--Trenni

Don't buy the hype. If the Crew goes into a slump, they are very catchable. Six games versus the Cards and four against the Phillies...good competition. I'm the first to admit they've been very fortunate this past month, breaks have gone their way. A run of bad luck, combined with some injury/fatigue, can wipe out a lead quick. Ten games is a bad week and a half.

The Mets have to pick their two PTBNL for KRod soon, and while I've assumed McClendon would be gone, he has allowed 7 runs in his last two appearances, spanning 3+ frames.

If the Mets are still deciding, that might scare them off, worrying if he is hiding an injury. His ERA jumped from 2.42 to 3.54.

8/30/2011 03:05:00 PM

(8/30/2011 12:46:00 PM) - Al

Two more options, Joe Biemel released. He has been mediocre this year versus LH hitters, and decent in his career.

Also, Mark Hendrickson, who has been a bottom of the rotation SP and middle reliever his entire career, was DFA'd by the Orioles. He has solid numbers both this year and over his career versus LH's, but, has rarely been used in that role.

Ditto for Tom Gorzelanny, who I talked about before.

I'm starting to seriously wonder how much time I've spent writing about the elusive southpaw reliever...beginning to feel like those idiots who spend all their down time in the woods, searching for Bigfoot, and darn near wetting themselves every time they come across a pile of bear crap.

Sources: No momentum toward a Berkman deal with Rangers – at least for the moment. Deadline still 34 hours

Heh. I heard this rumor on ESPN last night and felt it was ridiculous. Berkman has said he likes SL, and not only is RF open, but 1B may be as well for the Cards. They "could" trade him and then resign him, but we all know how often that occurs.

Randy Flores released after he opts-out of his contract. He'll be a FA.

I've been thinking Doug would add a LH arm in the bullpen before 9/1, but I've been saying it so long and time is growing short, I feel like the gal who has been engaged for eight years and can't get her fella to set a date. They are obviously not going to add a lefty just to add a lefty. I understand that for now, they have the 8th and 9th covered, and Roenicke's "don't want to use 3 pitchers to get through an inning" issue. That said, arms are fragile, and who knows what the future brings? It probably comes down to either having a loogy or a RHP, I'd prefer the loogy. Especially if you're talking about setting up the roster for really do not need much middle-long relief...if the SP gives up 5 runs in 3 2/3rd's, well, you're very likely to lose anyway.

Yes, I know there are 14 confirmed deaths from the hurricane. I also know far more than that were killed in auto accidents over the weekend, and that was completely preventable...just ban cars. Hey, it's tragic if they were friends or family that died too young regardless of the cause. But let's not pretend 14 deaths is some sort of armageddon-like event that only happens every couple centuries.

Why counting stats don't really matter:

2nd half of 2011

Fielder--7 HR's, 30 RBI's
McGehee--6 HR's, 27 RBI's

relievers who cleared waivers include street, fuentes, rauch, grabow, mike gonzalez and gregg--Heyman

I've mentioned Mike Gonzalez of the Orioles several times, he's been superb versus LH bats, and discussed Grabow that time as well.

Fuentes used to be very good, but has struggled a bit this year, and got into a public argument with A's management through the media. However, he has been solid versus lefties, and almost the same versus RH's, and has been throughout his career...he's never really been used as a loogy.

Brian passed through because he's owed $5M next year as well. Add that to his displeasure with how he was being used, I'm sure the A's would give him away, and Doug has little interest...that said, he's still solid.

Also, Bill Bray passed through unclaimed. Bray is only signed for this season, and only making $650K, so many teams would love him, but CIN has little reason to deal, he's under team control for two more seasons.

A few days remain until the August trade deadline, which is the same day as the deadline to be eligible to be on a postseason roster. I still think Doug is doing all he can to add a LH relief arm, and will "lower his expectations" in the coming days. I have not seen any reports of who he claimed and was unable to work out a deal, but Matt Thornton, who supposedly the White Sox and Crew had talks about in late July, was put on waivers last week, according to rumors.

Let's not forget, it takes two to tango. Pitching tends to be overrated this time of year, and teams may be asking for the moon, seeing a limited number of arms available.

Roenicke said Axford was "off" and "has been used a lot." 64 games and 62.2 frames does put him a bit over projection for the 70 relief inning mark that is kind of unsaid, but kind of a standard in MLB (77 games, 75.1).

If the Crew is able to maintain their lead, you can bet Axford will not pitch in many, if any, non-save situations, the rest of the year. In a perfect world scenario, where the Crew clinches a playoff spot with some time left, you might see Axford not used on consecutive days.

8/28/2011 04:07:00 PM

(8/28/2011 03:40:00 PM) - Al

One of Axford's worst outings of the year, HR, two fly outs to the track, and velocity "down" to 92-93...yet he still gets the save.

This team is indeed blessed with good fortune.

One of the amazing things about Axford in his career is how fly HR's he's allowed...usually high velocity guys give up homers because they supply the power, and when you hang a breaking ball, it helps to supply the lift.

That's now 5 HRA in 128 career innings...but 4 this season. That probably goes hand-in-hand with his better control...around the plate more equals more pitches in the hitter's wheelhouse.

Trying to stay balanced on my “home field advantage” skis, but remaining schedule certainly lays out “Advantage Brewers”….

I’m sure you’ve looked at this but the lid on MP may have had a big bearing on keeping September less stressful:

28 games remaining (12 road – 16 home)

4 off days for now (8/29; 9/12; 9/15; 9/22)

31 games remaining (20 road – 11 home)

0 off days

2 doubleheaders (9/15, 9/20)

Also see a late start for Philly at Atlanta the night before the Milwaukee series. Not a long flight, but undesirably late despite gaining the hour.

I'm far from concerned about home field...short series are a crapshoot, a couple fine performances by Halladay and Hamels...or Gallardo and Marcum, is far more likely to swing a possible MIL/PHIL LCS. Thanks for the info and legwork.

You can almost see the Royals inevitable demise reading this article. A 60something win team saying they're tow pitchers away? The Brewers win totals were in the high 70's two years before they picked up Marcum and Greinke. KC needs to keep doing things the right way, just like PIT has. They can undo years of growth by chasing that 75th win.

Where are people getting the story that Prince Fielder signed a contract extension from?--Doug Russell

This was the twitter message I woke up to this AM from the Milwaukee radio host. I have not heard anything about it. Updates please.

I heard something last night about his walk-up music...first that he was going to do something different and use a different song wach PA, and then that he had indeed done that. With some digging, I found he had played "Money" by Pink Floyd and then "I am getting paid" by Akon. He also was visited by a Make A Wish kid yesterday afternoon, so maybe she wanted him to use them, who knows?

Prince is a young adult who has always been a bit child-like...he gets very upset at times, remember his dugout confrontation with Parra, his attempt to get at Mota, but he settles down quickly and acts like it is nothing 5 minutes later. From his HR celebrations to his Monsters Inc thing he and his kids came up with, he's not a normal guy.

Realistically, Prince could have decided he wants to stay in MIL, and Doug/Mark have done very quiet extensions before, both of Braun's, for example. Someone mentioned that the commissioner's office is closed until Monday, so the paperwork would not be filed yet.

That said, Scott Boras is an attention whore, and the idea of this being done with no media knowledge at all seems very, very remote. Also, common sense tells us there's no way MIL will pay as much, or for as long, as Prince is going to get in literally, just 90 days or so.

Anything is possible, but the likelihood of this is very small, to say the least. If it is indeed Prince saying something about money, I would guess he signed an insurance policy guaranteeing him millions of dollars if he is injured the rest of the season.

Ann catches Bradley being the aggressor and talking down to her own words.

Ms. Bradley is one tiny step away from needing medical help to protect herself. Imagine the outcry if Dave Prosser had ran across the room and yelled at her? If not for the old media leaning so far left, Bradley would be in a "facility" somewhere, on drugs that go for $50 on the street. She's a loon.

At the very least, she filed a false report, or lied to the police. That's what crazy people do when confronted with the truth.

They picked a bad weekend to have the Final Four for the pro lacrosse league. It's pouring rain in Maryland, and the camera guys must be under orders not to show the stands, which are as barren as a liberal's fiscal restraint.

Luckily however, Denver brought their cheerleaders. When the action is on the left side of the field, the top of the screen is dominated by a half-dozen athletic young women in short shorts, wondering if they'll be able to fly home for free if they quit right now.

The announcer just called it "car wash conditions"...I guess they play lacrosse in anything.

With Estrada and Narveson back in the bullpen tomorrow, Dillard goes down, Taylor Green comes up.

They must have felt Green was a better add than Lopez, as I assume Taylor took Felipe's 40 man spot. Lopez is a switch-hitter and can play SS, but hasn't done either of those very well of late.

Not sure if Green will get starts at 2B or 3B, or just PH. I would think he at least might fit into the mix, as otherwise, Gamel would have got the call if they just needed a bench bat. One thing I've been thinking is that Hairston is both older and not used to playing every day. He looks solid, but he might wear down playing 9 games of 10.

ADDED: As I think about it, while he may be used almost entirely off the bench, it's probably better to have a 2B/3B on the postseason roster than a 1B who can also play 3B/LF/RF. Both are lefty bats.

Lucroy needs to stop putting his glove on the ground before every breaking pitch from Axford. I don't know if the Cubs were relaying that to the hitter ot not, but it did seem strange they were on every single 97 mph fastball and huge curveball after the first couple batters.

I gotta agree with Bill S, that 3-2 curve may have been the worst pitch call of the season. I get the idea, but make him hit his way on, and the fastball is more likely to be called a strike.

I realize you have to plan for the worst (see New Orleans, which doesn't believe in planning at all), but unless you live in a beach home, the large population areas of the Northeast won't be bothered much. In New York City, only low lying areas of Manhattan are in danger, according to Mayor Bloomberg.

Lots of New Yorkers are likely headed to their summer homes/cabins in the Hamptons this weekend anyway. You realize, I doubt the evacuation demands will be heeded by many, as let's be honest, New Yorkers are an independent, tough group. 1. Bradley may well have "issues," and I wonder if she should be on the court. When your peers think you need anger management classes and they have to cross off what drugs/counseling you are on, I'm not sure the high court is a proper occupation.

REP. MO BROOKS (R-ALA.): During the six years [Obama has] been in Washington, our accumulated national debt has increased by more than 50 percent. And what has President Obama’s response been now, and as a senator? To increase spending even more — not to cut it, but to increase spending even more. Two years as a freshman senator, the debt goes up $400 billion because of deficits. Two years when he’s in the majority of the United States Senate, it goes up $1.8 trillion dollars –”

BREWER: “But congressman –”

BROOKS: “– and now it’s $2.8 trillion while he’s president.”

BREWER: “You’re simplifying the issues that were on the plate of the nation at that point. I mean, we were looking at going . . . reverting into a depression at that point. Everyone, the Fed chairman –”

BROOKS: “Oh, I disagree that we were going into a depression, but go ahead.”

BREWER: “Do you have a degree in economics?”

BROOKS: “Yes, ma’am, I do — highest honors.”

Could you comment on this piece? It seems very strange, as you and many others have just assumed the Brewers would bring up a 3rd catcher, and here it is labeled unlikely.

That is one of the strangest posts I've ever read online, as it is almost as if the author is unaware of well reported facts, and has little to no understanding of the game.

1. Scarpetta is all but certain to be given another option by MLB, but the Brewers cannot ask for one until after the season. Also, saying a kid in AA with a 4 ERA and who walks 5 BB per 9 IP will be ready to pitch in a KRod/Axford season? Optimism abounds, I guess.

2. Eric Farris does not have defensive flexibility, he is a 2B who has played some SS this season to see if he can be a utility guy. He would be the 5th SS in MIL, at best, though he may well come up as a PR.

3. Maldonado is on the 40, and is a good defender. A third catcher is always nice to have, just in case, but the roster crunch often does not allow it. Assuming he will not come up seems very odd.

4. If Taylor Green should have been up in July, whose spot should he have taken? Considering Counsell is able to play 2B/SS/3B very well, and Josh Wilson has been platooning at 2B, playing versus LHP, a task not well suited for the LH hitting Green, I'm not sure where he would have fit in.

5. Braddock may not even be with Nashville? Wasn't that weeks ago when Gord announced "personal problems" for Zach? Also in the news, Weeks has been out of the lineup for a while.

Where's Mel Stocker or Joey Gathright? Eric Farris stole 70 a few years ago, but is far heavier and more muscular now.

EDIT: Neither Joey or Mel are still active, by the way. While Eric has never approached his 70 SB/6 CS numbers of 2009, he has had 33 SB/9 CS the past two seasons, a very good percentage.

Lucroy chose to yield the run and not take the contact there. I know that's the philosophy of many teams since the Posey incident...the A's have stated they don't want to lose a player over a run, but not sure if that's the Brewers' or Lucroy's decision.

Surprised Corey did not try to score, as McCutchen has a weak arm, though his throw was accurate. Especially with a lefty on the mound, I thought that was a better chance than hoping Prince got a hit.

On July 26, Brewers were a half-game out in NL Central. Tonight, on Aug. 23, they have a 10-game lead. Pretty amazing 28 days.--JS

Why you won't hear me being overconfident.

I look at it just the same as if the Crew was down 10. I would say they could easily get hot and with a good 20 game stretch, get right back in it, win 14 of 20. Most of all, they'd need whoever was ahead of them to slump, maybe go 7-13. That's all it takes to lose a lead as well. That scenario would mean a 3 game lead with a week and a half left.

If the Crew wins 24 of their next 28, there are no concerns. However, such a historic streak is unlikely, as they just did it once.

8/23/2011 11:01:00 PM

(8/23/2011 10:39:00 PM) - Al

I keep getting e-mails about who the Crew will call up 9/1. Now, this is over a week away, so I'm not sure what the rush is, but I assume a third catcher will be added, and since Martin Maldonado is on the 40, that seems pretty obvious.

Gomez will be added as soon as he is able to play. I would assume Gamel will also be brought back right away. Assuming they go back to a dozen arms, I assume either DLC or Dillard will return, as well as perhaps one other pitcher. There are not many choices of those already on the 40, except Peralta or Scarpetta, both very young, though both have been starting all season and should be stretched. I also think Daniel Herrera may return, either on 9/1 or after the Nashville season concludes on Labor Day.

Eric Farris is still on the 40, and would seem to be a possibility for his PR skills, though his speed is just above average. Taylor Green can play 2B/3B, and has had a very good campaign, but is not on the 40.

Considering Doug is still rumored to be on the prowl for a RH bat off the bench, and/or a lefty for the bullpen, I doubt if there will be others.

Finally, I did not mention Mike McClendon, who I assume will soon be Mets' property. If he is not, Mike has been solid in AAA, and would be welcome.

The fact Estrada has outpitched Greinke during their starts should drive Zack up the wall...but I bet it doesn't.

I'm about the only person who has been riding the Marco bandwagon since he was signed in the offseason before the '10 season. We have no idea if all five SP's will return next year, but with Estrada and Wily Peralta (and, I should mention Michael Fiers, who has been very solid in AA/AAA, better than Wily even), rotation depth will not be the cause of a lot of sleepless nights in the coming months.

John Sickels said the Crew had the worst farm system in MLB a few months ago. The irony is, they have no fewer than 8-10 future big leaguers, of various degrees of merit, at AAA Nashville alone. Dig a little deeper next time, John.

EDIT, by popular request: Peralta, Fiers, McClendon, Maldonado, Gamel, Green, Gindl, Schafer...and possibly Rivas, Farris, Herrera.

BA started to say earlier that the Crew intends to utilize the off days with the rotation, so I assume they will skip Narveson. Right now, they have 13 pitchers, so if they are only going to use 4 SP's through next week, nine RP's seems like overkill.

So, as of Friday, it seems likely we'll see a position player added, and either Dillard or DLC sent down.

Dioner Navarro and Felix Pie DFA'd.

Both good role players, especially Navarro, who is a plus hitter versus LHP. Pie is a very good defender who is a lot like Tony Gwynn Jr. His offense is passable versus RHP, but he is so bad versus LHP he might be holding the bat upside-down. Might platoon someday in a huge CF like COL or SD. HOU might look to him now that Bourn is gone.

Pie and former Brett Carroll would be an effective, cheap CF platoon for someone.

Isn't it strange that the Pirates have neither of their top two relief guys available when they play a doubleheader today? Would you say that's a lack of planning?

It certainly is a lack of planning, but it's also very common for managers to ignore the next day, because:

1. In theory, the starter might throw a complete game.

2. It could get rained out.

3. Could be a blowout.

The irony is, I forget who it was that said it, but the phrase "the starting staff determines how you use the bullpen" has always stuck with me, Roenicke is getting a lot of credit for his bullpen use since the break, but in reality, Doug deserves most of the credit, and the rest of it goes to how good Axford and company have been. When you can get away with not using (or barely using) your bottom two guys, your results are probably going to be very good.

I have a pretty good recollection of Yost, Macha, and Roenicke's usage patterns, and I can barely tell them apart. All tried to keep guys in specific jobs, and in Macha's case, worked almost perfectly when Hoffman was good in '09, though the starters often had trouble getting past the 6th and 7th. Early this year, Roenicke had the same problem, especially when Saito and Hawkins were out, and various lefties were ineffective. Of late, Ron really only has to manage 7 innings, making his job pretty simple...he doesn't even worry about double-switching, as hardly any of his guys go more than an inning often. When you have a rotation that averages over 6 frames a start, that's easy to do. Last year, the SP's averaged about 5.5. Since the break, they've averaged almost 7.

Back to the question at hand, today's situation for PIT is similar to how it usually works in the minors. Very rarely are guys used back-to-back days, and very rarely do guys pitch just to a batter or two...they want to ensure guys aren't overused, and they develop, not specialize. Also, everyone tends to get similar work in the minors, because even though you have your top prospects, no one develops without a chance.

LH loaded lineup for game one, due to the extreme splits of Jeff Karstens I'm sure. If Lopez were still with the team, I bet he'd be playing 2B or 3B.

Tom from the JS can't be bothered clicking on a simple link, so he thinks the lineup is because Roenicke wants everyone to play. That might be part of it too, though Wilson would be the only reserve in the lineup for game two, if he does play SS or 2B.

If the Crew wants to add a bat to come off the bench before the end of the month, the schedule is favorable for them, as they have this Thursday and Monday off. They could easily go with one less pitcher for a few days with those days off, allowing them to add someone if they so desire.

Doug was said to be asking about a powerful bat for the bench and a lefty reliever way back before Weeks got hurt, and he still is, I'm sure, though he's not going to overpay, you can count on that.

Word out of SL is that the Cards probably will not offer arby to Skip Schumacher, as they would have to offer him more than they feel he's worth as a utility player.

If he can play all three OF positions and 2B, and have a nifty .350ish OBP as a LH bat, I could see him fitting in well on the Crew, maybe in the spot Kotsay has held down in '11.

Looking at his career splits, he has a 775 OPS versus RHP, so he will be in high demand from plenty of teams as a platoon 2B or CF, he's well above average offensively.

Kotsay is having minor leg issues, something to keep in mind as we discuss who will br dropped when Narveson is activated. Adding Kotsay for example. Finding the money to bring back Counsell. Taking a chance on Morgan, who was available all of March for a song. At the deadline, bringing aboard a high OBP guy who can play six positions, like Hairston. Signing a hard thrower with little history of success like DLC to a minor league deal. And perhaps the best, yet the quietest, was resigning Estrada, who many had questions about, due to Marco not revealing an injury untikl after he was sent down last season...and then not returning from his rehab as quickly as had been predicted.

Estrada was especially important due to the injury to Mark Rogers, as well as the fact no veteran SP's wanted to sign with MIL due to their rotation pretty much being set.

The Brewers’ personality is like no other club’s. They are the anti-Cardinals, joyful instead of joyless, exuding energy. Their dugout erupted after they regained the lead in the ninth, and the players were still exchanging high-fives and hugs when they took the field for the bottom half, almost like a high-school team.--Rosenthal

That's one reason why free agents choose to play in MIL, and even the ones who leave (Sabathia, Cameron) continue to tell everyone who will listen (including teammates) how they enjoyed their time in MIL.

Narveson will start first game of doubleheader tomorrow. That's what I would do, as you can leave Greinke out there for 115-120 pitches if you have to, depending on the state of the bullpen.

If they wanted, they could have another arm in Pittsburgh ready to step in if Dillard or DLC had to go several frames. That's probably not necessary, as they look like they'll be adding Chris in the place of Lopez, so they're not really short on relievers.

I still see the Crew picking up a LH reliever before the end of the month. I still like Mike Gonzalez of BAL, who has been awful versus RH bats, but superb against lefties this year, and still throws hard.

And you know what? John Grabow has been very good against lefties this season too. I assume both of them would/have easily clear waivers.

For what it's worth, Gonzalez has been nearly perfect in August, Grabow has been solid as well.

It wasn't even a one-run game, and the luck was just overwhelming. It's not often you win when you give up 9 runs, that's for sure. Nice road series win, with the Sunday game still to play.

The great things about luck...even if you realize it should even out over time, no one can ever take those W's off the board.

By the way, I would have sent Morgan on the fly ball/sac fly...I thought it would take a perfect throw to get the speedy Morgan, and I'm willing to risk that with Prince's DP possibility. I was feeling pretty smart when the throw bounced over the catcher, and Braun said, "Wow," in the dugout, as if to hint he thought it was deep enough.

Am told by a solid source that Fiers would be Rule 5 Draft eligible after 2012 season.--Adam,

He's 26 now, so it's probably unimportant anyway, except to roster geeks. It may impact his callup (or lack thereof) in a week and a half, however.

Just another byproduct of that awful Brewers' farm system, I might add.

8/20/2011 02:47:00 PM

(8/20/2011 02:40:00 PM) - Al

It seems unlikely to me the Crew will add Fiers unless he's needed to pitch in an important that, I mean he's unlikely to be brought up in September to pitch "garbage" innings. However, if they need a SP, all that is out the window.

8/20/2011 02:40:00 PM

(8/20/2011 02:34:00 PM) - Al

FYI, Adam now agrees Fiers is not Rule 5 eligible, and thus, would not have to be added to the 40 this offseason...unless he is called up to pitch.

As I said, the Brewers seem intent on doing whatever they can to win the most games, so we may well see him in September.

It's quite a testament to Fiers that we're having this discussion...he has moved up so quickly, it's hard to believe.

8/20/2011 02:34:00 PM

(8/20/2011 02:08:00 PM) - Al

As for Adam's musings about the 40 man:

1. The Mets have to take their two PTBNL's by 9/1, I think. One is almost certainly McClendon, and he will free up a 40 man spot.

2. Kintzler is on the 15 day DL, and could be moved to the 60 day DL to free up a 40 man spot.

3. Herrera and Farris also are holding down spots on the 40, and could easily be removed. That said, the Brewers might like to use one or both of them in September as role players...Daniel as a loogy, Eric as a PR/bench guy.

4. Given Mark Rogers' issues, he can't be too far from being taken off the 40. I assume someone would pick him up, as you can't teach velocity, but with his many injuries, and now a second stimulant positive test, one wonders how high he can possibly rank.

This 40 man issue will also affect players who may have "earned" a September call-up, but do not have a spot. This includes Taylor Green, Caleb Gindl, Michael Fiers, and a couple others.

8/20/2011 02:08:00 PM

(8/20/2011 01:54:00 PM) - Al

Adam discusses other things to keep in mind, as the Crew needs to clear a 40 man spot to add another player to the 40.

I'll send him a note, as he still thinks Fiers has to be added this offseason. I'm all but positive he does not.

This is from a post at, that makes sense to me.

Fiers signed 6/14/09 as a 24 year old. The Brewers get 4 full years to evaluate him before he becomes eligible for the Rule 5 draft. Fiers won't be Rule 5 eligible until after the '13 season.

8/20/2011 01:54:00 PM

(8/20/2011 01:44:00 PM) - Al

Heh, never mind about Fiers, as Narveson has a successful bullpen and is expected to start one of the games Monday.

Interesting to see who goes to make room...very few players have options. As little as Lopez has played, he might be DFA'd and told he'll be back 9/1 if he chooses to go down. Estrada will pitch Tuesday, and then will head back to the bullpen...or, he could also go down until rosters expand, as he'll be unable to pitch for at least a couple days. I just don't think they'd want to send down Dillard when they are not sure Narveson will be able to go 5-6 frames...what if he struggles and has to be removed after 1.2 innings?

8/20/2011 01:44:00 PM

(8/20/2011 01:40:00 PM) - Al

Michael Fiers is scheduled to pitch tomorrow for Nashville, and has been superb this season, so he must be the guy. The unique thing is, Fiers does not have to be protected on the 40 man this offseason, but will be if brought up.

To be blunt, the Crew is not too concerned about that, it would appear. They apparently feel Fiers gives them the best chance to win.

8/20/2011 01:40:00 PM

(8/20/2011 01:27:00 PM) - Al

Narveson currently throwing his 'pen. If he can't go Monday, would be De La Cruz/bullpen game or a call-up NOT named Peralta.--Adam,

That's interesting. I assume the Crew is concerned about Wily's youth and inconsistency...moire afraid of a blow-up than anything else.

I'd just go with Frankie myself...the guy was pitching better than anyone still in AAA and has done a fine job since his call-up.

Roenicke very unhappy about rain delay, and that they let the pitchers warm up despite having no intention of starting the game on time. He said he almost had DLC start.

I was just thinking late in the game that they could have had DLC or Dillard start, and pushed Marcum back to Monday...but, that would not have worked out perfectly either, as the Wednesday SP would have been Wolf on short rest, or Dillard/DLC again.

As long as Marcum is not bothered, it worked out perfectly tonight, despite the lack of communication. Remember, the home team decides when the first pitch is, and the umpires take over after that pitch is thrown.

Very impressed with DLC thus far, good velocity, good breaking stuff, and unlike previous MLB stints, he's throwing strikes. People always wonder why those guys that throw 94-95 keep getting chance after chance despite being wild. That's an easy one...sometimes, eventually, they find it...yet the guys with the good control...they never start throwing 95.

8/20/2011 12:43:00 AM

(8/20/2011 12:33:00 AM) - Al

Doesn't sound like Roenicke wants a loogy, only a lefty reliever that can also get righties out, like the Sox's Thornton, who is finally admitted as a target in the past.

(8/20/2011 12:14:00 AM) - Al

Another solid outing from the rotation.

DLC pitching an inning tonight seems to set him up to start Monday's first game, and then be replaced on the roster, either by Narveson, Peralta, or Flores, to keep the bullpen at full strength until next Thursday's day off, when they'll probably reset the staff. Frankie will have to stay down ten days, but he can come back after the rosters expand 9/1.

I just looked up the numbers of Martin Maldonado, who is a defensive whiz behind the plate, and finally seems to be hitting a bit in AAA, putting together a career mark of .360/.460...superb for a catcher, especially one who is superb defensively.

He's been on the 40 since last year, and is probably just an injury to Lucroy or Kottaras away from the bigs, or he can hope the Crew decides George is enough of a defensive liability to make up for his good eye and pop.

How in demand would he be? The Yankees just claimed a guy in his late 20's with a career OPS in AAA of 590 on waivers. The bar is set so low for catchers, you have to take that into consideration.

Three scumbag teens were convicted of killing three little kids years ago, one of the three confessed. Over the years, some doubt about their guilt has come up...though no evidence supporting that has been found...rather, the fact that in today's scientific age, the continued lack of evidence against the three seems to be repeated over and over.

They served 18 years, and basically pleaded no contest today, admitting there was evidence against them, but maintaining their innocence.

The sad thing, no one seems to even care or mention the kids that were killed. And, I have little doubt the three will violate probation and go back to prison...that's what happens with the vast majority of those that were incarcerated.

Randy Choate, loogy for the Marlins, has been placed on waivers, though FLA has little reason to listen to trade talk if claimed, as he is signed cheaply this year and next. That said, Doug is known to like him, and they tried to sign him last offseason.

FLA could just recall him, as happens everyday with dozens of players in August.

EDIT: Just a added note...Choate has faced 84 LH hitters this year, and only 14 have reached base. He may be the best loogy in the game this season, never mind available. If he is dealt, he'll garner a far better prospect than Komatsu, who went to the Nats for Hairston.

Ed Schultz edits and changes things to make Perry seem racist?

I, for one, am shocked...shocked that MSNBC would resort to such tactics...after all, they are an unbiased member of the old media.

Julia Allison is a friend of Meghan McCain's, and even dated Jack McCain, who is 23, a military pilot, and could likely beat me up in less than ten seconds. Also, Julia, despite being in her late 20's/early 30's (ancient in today's world, just ask the old media), is still mighty attractive.

All that said, I won't make fun of her like I normally would, but I dare you to read her article on "not enough signal" in and around a music festival in Chicago and not smile at the fact she actually thinks it's a big enough deal to write an article about.

"I can't text my friends"...shut the hell up. Half the world has no idea what a phone call is, and the odds are, you have a half-dozen old phones at home that you once paid for and now just sit there have a fancier model now.

Hairston at 2B tonight. If one of the four guys get hot and have a couple 3-4 days in a row, they'd probably pick up the majority of playing time the rest of the month.

This is how the government works...$20M, supposed to insulate 2K homes and create 2K jobs. One year later...14 jobs created, 3 houses done.

For those of you thinking the Obama administration has a handle on fixing the economy, see exhibit A.

Fox News reporting both Paul Ryan and Chris Christie are considering jumping in and may announce within the next 24 hours.

I think Ryan is more of a "let's get this stuff on the table and deal with it" type, but compared to the status quo, I'd take almost anyone. Christie is a perfect combination of common sense, fiscal discipline, and sound bites with humor...not to mention, a very handsome man (not that I'm built like him or anything).

Brewers' 6-game lead biggest in club history since '82 team was up 6.5 Gs on Aug. 27.--JS

If you recall, they won that on the last day of the season. I agree with Braun, I'd rather be six up than six down, but one bad week, they could be right back to even. When I look at their run differential, I fully grasp how fortunate they've been, and how remarkable the back end of the bullpen has been.

Adam sent out a note that the rotation has matched last season's quality start total. This is a far better club, without a doubt, at least on the pitching side.

California seeing businesses flocking to other states after online tax passed.

All the folks that think the public is just an open wallet, too dumb to notice a few pennies on each they aren't, and neither are these companies.

Let that be a lesson to all who sees us as rubes who pay for...everything with our taxes. The account is closed boys. Stop spending so damn much.

Even if Gomez returns, Hairston can play so many other spots, he's still welcome back next season. Heck, if he does come back, he might be penciled in as the starting SS, as Yuni's option will be declined.

That triple play sure took the Dodgers out of that inning. I forget who said that years ago, but it's still funny.

Kemp must be Gomez-like fast to make that close. I thought he must have been running on the pitch, but was not.

Not a single first round pick has signed today, deadline is tonight at 11. All chasing every penny. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that, but they could have signed two months ago and moved up a level by now. Chasing pennies now is foolish compared to the difference between arby and free agency later.

The Crew did sign their 18th round pick, a HS SS, for $315K, which is probably about a quarter mil over slot. Obviously, they chose him there hoping to buy him off his college commitment, and it worked. Supposedly, he is a 2nd/3rd round talent, Chris McFarland.

He's so good, they named a town after him.:)
