All the pro poker players I follow on Twitter are complaining Vegas is packed beyond belief with idiots tonight.

Meanwhile, on Facebook, my "friends" are complaining there's nothing to do in {name of town where they live}.

It's a perfect storm of not being happy with what you have. The irony is, I'm sitting on the sofa with an elderly cocker spaniel lying on me, drooling on my shorts, interrupted only by an occasional sit up and itch...and I'm perfectly content.

The Rambling wife hooked up our new router, so if you notice anything different...

Heckuva game by Iowa today, they look like a bunch of long athletes who can give anyone trouble...especially if anyone can't hit a shot. Not going to win many games only hitting 10% of your 3's...never mind how many were wide open. They had to go to OT with them last year too, so between the matchups and cold shooting, just did not have enough.

That's why so many teams "pack it in" when they play the Badgers, and just hope...once or twice a season, the ball just won't fall. On those nights, you pretty much have to do everything else perfectly. Strange to see it occur at home.

The badgers will bounce back not many games you shoot that bad and still have a chance to win.--Brian Butch

That's actually a good point.

We used to use accurate terms, like bums. Now, in the era of eliminating all personal responsibility, it's up to the nanny state to protect those that choose to damage themselves.

If today was 1850, we'd pay people to sit home in the East and not go West, because they might break a nail, or develop a cough.

An outing of the extremely liberal old media.

The mere idea Dan Rather was not hauled off the set that very night, by security with weapons drawn, pretty much proves all you need to know...the old media reports fiction as fact with such regularity, when Danny Boy or Andy Cooper do it, we not only do not scream and insist they get fired, we are so used to it we usually don't even mention it.

The NY Times prints an outing of John McCain's "mistress" without a smidge of evidence, while looking the other way the entire Johnny Edwards campaign as the married neanderthal bunks with some bimbo who is not his wife...and waits until it is so apparent the National Enquirer breaks it.

Each of the 5 highest scoring MLB teams won at least 90 games in '11, while SF was only one of the 5 lowest scoring teams to avoid 90 losses--MLBTR

So much for pitching being 90% of the game.

The long article is here. Note SEA scored the fewest runs despite having a DH almost every game. How Jack Z has kept his job is stunning, he must have convinced the ownership a rebuild is necessary, but teams that lose, and lose without scoring, rarely have any patience at all.

SEA was the only team with a sub .300 OBP, at .292. #0th in both OBP and SLG. Now, Safeco is a pitcher's park, but c'mon. Even easy upgrades, like DH, were ignored...worst OPS in the AL at 650, 13th place was OAK at 696, then BAL at 734. How can your DH put up an OPS lower than Yuni B's, who, you know, played SS?

Rumors persist Greinke has gone to Doug and asked for a 5 year extension at well below market value. How do you feel about that?

To me, the question is simple...what exactly is "well below" market value? To guarantee five years into the future, especially for a pitcher, who is always just one pitch away from severe, career threatening injury, that discount does indeed have to be significant. There's a reason many teams simply do not sign pitchers for more than three years at a time...they get injured, a lot.

Supposedly, Greinke likes MIL and wants to commit. However, along with the risks for a "normal" pitcher, Zack brings along baggage:

1. His anxiety issues have caused problems in the past, and like an alcoholic, will have to be monitored the rest of his life, especially in the type of profession he is in.

2. He admitted after leaving the Royals he gave less than maximum effort at times. To me, this has been completely ignored and brushed aside, possibly due to the above problem...some don't want to be seen as "picking on him."

3. On a minor scale, both he and his wife are a bit too open with the press for my liking, saying things that a simple "no comment" would have been a far more intelligent answer.

For instance, I loved the Gallardo extension, as while there's risk involved, the discount he gave the team, if he remains healthy and effective, is the range of 30-50%, depending on how optimistic you want to be...and made about 25% of Tim Lincecum last year, and is likely to be similar in '12.

What do SP's like Zach get?

John Danks is going to get $14-16M in his first few years of free agency. Chad Billingsley, $12-14M, and Jerad Weaver $16-20M. CJ Wilson just signed a backloaded contract for the Angels, but it averages $15M per. Mark Buerhle's deal averaged just under $15M per, while Sabathia's averages about $24M per.

To me, "market" is probably in the $15M range, though you could argue more or less. Because of his relative youth, athleticism, and "stuff," I'd probably estimate that as a free agent, he could easily get 3-5 seasons, at $15-17M. Because the injury risk increases with a longer deal, 5y/$80M would be where I would probably say the midpoint is. So, "below market," to me, would have to be about 10-20% below that, and to be blunt, given the length, I'd prefer the higher %. 5y/$64M ($12.8M) would be where a perfect world scenario would end up, and considering Zack made $13.5M in '11 and '12, I doubt that's happening, to say the least. I would guess "below market" probably means a per season average of about $14-16M, which is about a 5% markdown, if my math is correct.

My take? I'd hate to go five years, would much prefer 3-4. Since he's already signed for '12, four more would still be five total, and would probably add up to $70M minimum.

Today might end up as the 3rd busiest shopping day of the season. We went to Best Buy and it was packed, both the parking lot and the store. The line was a dozen deep around the "cell phone plans" area. I walked past a guy telling a 17-20 year-old that the $774 cost would be $174 after his gift cards were used...makes our purchase of a $69 router seem rather pedestrian.

We also went to Golden Corral, where they had apparently forgot that today was basically a weekend, as no one worked today unless you're in retail. They ran out out of every item a couple times during our visit, and finally in order to fill up the holes, had four trays of potato chips at various'd have to be brain dead not to see through that.

How pathetic was it? At one point, 8-10 people were standing up at the buffet waiting for the next batch of "sliders"...tiny burgers on tiny buns, to come out. The chocolate wonderfall was yummy, the Rambling son enjoyed no less than four marshmallows heavily laden with the liquid cocoa nectar.

As others have said, it seems like 130 years ago. Not only can you not imagine Obama saying anything so simple and eloquent, nor apolitical, it is not a coincidence the Gipper is remembered as the Great Communicator.

It's sad to realize that it's almost assured that those of us who remember him have all but certainly already witnessed the finest leader of our lifetime. A man who loved his country, who never spoke badly of it, and who shared our pride in it...never once apologizing for it.

After much digging through BlogAds, I finally found the ads that were up last week, which were "risque" in nature, but certainly not X rated (no nudity, it might slip through as PG even, in a movie), but again, probably not what I would prefer to have on the site.

It appears on my history as "MB Sports," though that seems to stand for "Mutually Beneficial," a relationship site of sorts. It all seems to be promoting a site called, which I have no problem with and is very legal, but again, if it offended one person, probably not worth the time.

Out of nearly 7K visitors last week, 36 people clicked on it, so if memory serves, that's a pretty good click through rate...who would have guessed attractive young women is an effective marketing tool, huh?

Again, if you were bothered, Ramblings apologizes, and a full refund will be offered.:)

I see the Heat were up 35 points going into the fourth quarter today. I would assume we'll have more blowouts than usual, as teams will be tired and "punt" more than usual. That said, the Mavs are really good to be losing like that.

The scheduled posts popped up today, as we went home for the Rambling family Xmas.

The Rambling brother asked what I had on the sidebar last week, as it featured scantily clad women. I had no idea, I did have a BlogAd I approved, but I cannot see them as I have AdBlock, and they do not have adult oriented sites. If anyone can tell me what site it was for, I would appreciate it. I do not think it was offensive, but given that some parents may not want their 10 year-old ogling ladies while seeing if the Brewers made a trade or signing, it probably was not the best choice for a family website, especially given my payment is approximately equal to just less than a fast food value meal.

LA wants to sue Occupy for damages.

I get the disgust and the fact that people should be held financially responsible for vandalism and bad behavior...Wisconsin should go after the unions for the Capitol damage. They have every right to protest peacefully, but no right at all to cause physical damage and police overtime.

However, 100% of nothing is nothing. 98% of Occupy geeks have no money, no jobs, and will likely be on public assistance their entire life. They are supported by their parents, grandparents, dealing drugs, pawning gifts from their enablers, and so on...and you're not going to get a penny from them in the courts.

I wonder why so many people feel guilty about celebrating Xmas however they want to...the single guy who wants to watch the NBA and eat pizza...heck, half the guys in the US want to be him. A few years ago, the Rambling wife's parents joined us for Xmas Eve, and then they all left to spend Xmas Day in Milwaukee with family.

I had to be at work at 6AM the day after Xmas, and driving six hours round trip had little appeal, so I just stayed home. Let me tell you, after seeing them off at 8, I went back to bed, slept late, and took a nap in the afternoon. Some people thought I was plum nuts, I think it was a glorious stress free holiday.

The Rambling wife and I don't usually get each other gifts, we buy something for the house (this year, we plan on buying a dishwasher that does not sound like a bomber taking off in World War 2). Seriously, how many jewels and furs does one woman need?

{Just an FYI, she has no furs. PETA vandals, stay away from our home.}

Had to tell you that the Lexus ribbon around the car was on during our family get together today. I said, "Think how much those Occupy idiots hate this commercial," and after a slight pause, everyone laughed. My grandma said, "Well, yeah, those people look clean," while someone else said, "That's why they have jobs."

Must have been 25 people there, no one seemed sympathetic to the losers that choose to bitch and moan while living on Daddy's money.

If Carolina wins Denver loses next week, Cam Newton will have as many wins as Tim Tebow this year.--Jh Moore

What's funny to me is there is a human being on the planet that is so ignorant, drunk, or more than likely, so frightened of someone whose beliefs are different from his own as to make this argument:

Cam Newton, 6-9 = Tim Tebow, 7-3

Barkeep, we'd all like some of what the extremely dimwitted person is drinking...and keep 'em coming until I don't feel so damn slow.

As I've said before, Tebow is certainly nowhere near as good as the top QB's, the Brady, Manning (either one), Rodgers, and Brees...and more than likely several more, as I certainly am no NFL expert. That said, he has had some very good games, and others in which he has led a late comeback. He does it differently, he runs, he runs a funky offense not usually seen in the pros, and most of all, he is a proud, outspoken Christian. If he were a black man, or a Muslim, I'd be called a racist or hater for even suggesting he was not the best ever.

It does puzzle me though why so many feel the need to put this fella down, just because he's unique.

Walker, heralded as a “hero” of the conservative cause, will be in Washington in two months to address the American Conservative Union. If he comes out on top, in a special election, he is a right wing political star. If he loses, he is a political martyr, but still a star. What Walker represents – the idea behind his policies – cannot be killed even if he is temporarily removed from office.--Governors Journal

Named governor of the year, and the above, final paragraph, has to a liberal's worst nightmare. He is literally, and quite seriously, Chris Christie without the charisma...a serious contender for a leadership position in the GOP in the future.

Some have questioned Christie, because while he's been a strong conservative on fiscal matters, like myself, but leans libertarian on social matters, also like myself; while Walker is more of a traditional conservative.

Undeniably, both are strong leaders, and have a manner about them. I'd compare them to Clinton and to George W Bush, you may not agree with that they do, but they provide leadership the way strong people do...they mean what they say and say what they mean...and they stand for something. Clinton was a bit more of a "wheeler-dealer," and many say the strong economy during most of his administration is what Gingrich is taking credit for as he runs for president, but it's impossible not to give Clinton credit as well, as he was the man in charge.

Just hard from a Walgreen's store manager, asking why I dislike them. I don't, though I do find their ads promoting a near empty store puzzling. I'm combining my lists of RH hitting 1B that are possibilities now that Izturis (who can backup at 3B) is in the fold:

Jorge Cantu--The Brewers tried to sign Jorge last year, but he chose to cast his lot with SD, who released him. Has played 1B/2B/3B, though has very limited range at 2B. .316/.439 career, .316/.404 since '09, and .317/.440 vs. LHP...almost no split at all.

Jeff Keppinger--Jeff actually is a guy you could consider as a 1B/SS you could pair with Green, though he has only played eight games at 1B and as a SS has very little range. .332/.388 career, .327/.386 last three seasons, .371/.481 vs. LHP. He could fit in nicely, as he has played everywhere except CF, and he and Theriot are the best hitters among those left who could backup SS. OK on D except at SS, where he is probably 8-10 runs below average over 150 games.

Bill Hall--I did not have Hall on the initial list, but decided that he does fit the criteria, though he has never played 1B in the majors, he certainly could. Considering MIL paid him to go away, HOU did the same last year, and rumors of a play first/work later attitude have followed him for half-a-decade, a reunion in MIL seems odd, but I guess you never know. He does one thing very well...pound LHP, and while defense is not a strength, he is able to play anywhere on the field, kind of a poor man's, wild swinging Jerry Hairston Jr. .307/.436 career, .282/.380 since '09, and .328/.454 vs. LHP.

Xavier Nady--Nady has played 1B/LF/RF, but is pretty much a 1B who can hit lefties at this stage of his career. .328/.438 career, .299/.359 last 3 years, and .358/.446 vs. LHP.

Scott Hairston---.303/.437 career, .302/.420 since '09, and .328/.486 vs. LHP. Scott has never played 1B in the majors, but has played plenty of 2B, so I'm assuming he could, you know, catch throws from across the diamond. Scott has also played the OF extensively as well.

Conor Jackson---.351/.407 career, .312/.323 last 3 years, and .381/.436 vs. LHP. Conor has been just another guy since 2009, as he has suffered from a mosquito caused illness, as well as leaving the offensive paradise of ARI, so it's tough to really estimate what he has left. He has played 1B and OF in his career, and even a little bit of 3B.

I'd say that of these six, Keppinger and Hairston are by far the class of the field, and in this market, one or both might require a two year commitment. I like Keppinger because he can play SS, though poorly, and if you'll recall, when the Crew picked up Josh Wilson, Roenicke said he liked having two SS reserves so he did not have to save one. The rest could be had for a single season, and possibly even a minor league contract.

Brewers hit 1M tickets sold, destroys previous record by almost a month.

Thus far, only season tickets have been sold, other than about 30K seats in 7700 holiday four packs. That leaves about 970K season tiks, which using their terminology, is about 12K FSE's (full season equivalents).

It is astounding how much better of a job the Crew does on marketing and promoting this than they did before Mark A purchased the team.

If group sales go as planned, they might well have several virtual game sellouts before single game tickets go on sale, which is usually the last Saturday of February.

I assume the early date is due to the '11 success, a very high renewal rate among previous season ticket holders, and the non-refundable deposits many fans were willing to pay to get playoff tickets.

I wanted to respond to your post about parking meters in Chicago since I live in the area. The new pay boxes are nice since anyone can now pay with a credit card. However the article points out the big drawback to the privatization, namely the huge increase in rates. Many think the city "sold out" for a large upfront payment in exchange for a large rate hike. Rates here are between 8 and 32 times higher than pre-privatization, when all meters cost .25 cents per hour. Now this likely will mean an increase in public transit which will also mean less congestion, which will only be a good thing.

Is the system more convenient? Yes. Does it cost less? Not at all.

"He said the city was divided into six zones and a rate schedule was established that will raise rates by 2013 to amounts ranging from $6.50 per hour in the Chicago loop to $2 per hour in more remote neighborhoods. Prior to 2009, the rates at most meters were 25 cents per hour."

Thank you Eric, I admit I skimmed the article and while seeing it was now higher, I did not notice that. However, one has to realize that's exactly what private companies do, make money. The city of Chicago used to subsidize parking, and no longer do, nor should they. This is a perfect example of how user fees are oodles better than taxes, as they have the proper person paying, and not everyone.

This is supply and demand at work, and good for Chicago.

Al, thought you might be interested to see this story about teachers in the Green Bay school district retiring mid-year in order to ensure more benefits from themselves. Remember, of course, that they are all about the kids.

More savings for those districts, Peter, and plenty of good teachers who have not got the chance will now. Win, win.

Back in the day, when someone left my store, I would shake their hand and wish them the best, regardless of their skills, I figured if they did not want to be there, I didn't want them. And, it gave someone else the opportunity to work their way up, just like I did, started as part-time associate and a decade later, I was running my own store.

I'm sure many of those retiring teachers will go into the private sector and make far more money and have better benefits anyway.

Brewers sign Cesar Izturis to a minor league deal, if healthy, he may well backup 2B/SS/3B for the Crew. He's your classic no hit/good field utility infielder, but he does have a couple pluses. One, he is a switch-hitter, which while nice, he doesn't really hit from either side, which kind of makes him like the prettiest girl at ugly camp.

Another bonus is he can play, and defend well, all three INF spots besides 1B. This could allow them to carry a RH 1B to protect Gamel without having to find one that can play 3B/OF as well.

Read what happened when Chicago put private business in charge of parking meters and ramps.

I know it's shocking, but it's working extremely well. Put the potential for profit into something and remove the bumbling bureaucrat showing up late, taking a long lunch, and leaving early, whose only goal is to do the same thing tomorrow, you can't help but improve.

Tom Brady, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Patriots flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity Tom, said God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here." Tom felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house.

On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a huge 3-story mansion with Orange and Blue sidewalks and driveways, a 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous Broncos logo flag waving, a swimming pool in the shape of a horse, a Broncos logo in every window, and a Tim Tebow jersey on the front door.

Tom looked at God and said "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was an all-pro QB, I won 3 Super Bowls, and I even went to the Hall of Fame."

God said "So what's your point Tom?"

"Well, why does Tim Tebow get a better house than me?"

God chuckled, and said "Tom, that's not Tim's house, it's mine.

Heh. This is why we must have the internet.

If he can indeed play 2B and 3B at a decent level, he could be a very good utility infielder for ages...very few have any power at all, and while his OBP will still be a bit below the norm, his extra-base pop makes him well above average offensively...for a backup.

What about some of the most inflammatory claims in the ads? Are there really places that have 47 kids in one classroom or a classroom where there aren't enough tables or chairs so students have to sit on the floor?

FOX 11 On Special Assignment contacted the state Department of Public Instruction to find out if they had heard of districts with that type of overcrowding. A spokesman said increased class sizes "could lead to overcrowding." But the DPI "does not collect data specific to this."

They told us to contact the group behind the ad, which we did.

We asked the Greater Wisconsin Committee to tell us where there are 47 students in a class and where students are sitting on the floor. To this point, the group has refused to tell us.--Fox 11

I agree with Tony Dungy, though for different reasons. Now teams have a blueprint, and the Packers are far from healthy. Add that to the fact no one has even been discussing the Packers playoff chances, as a Super Bowl berth was just assumed until yesterday. Expectations like that lead to a bullseye being placed on them, as well as players/coaches feeling pressure instead of just doing their jobs.

Oh, and their defense still sucks. If you take their points scored and points allowed, this is a 10-4 team, not a 13-1. They've won all the close games though, much like the Broncos have done since Tebow began starting, and that leads to silly statements.

#8 trending on Yahoo tonight is "men's watches." How amazingly wealthy are we as a nation? That such a thing as "crappy gift season" exists. Names that might fit in as a 1B/3B that bats RH:

Casey Blake--Blake is a versatile guy too, has played a lot at 1B/3B/RF, and certainly would be plenty capable in LF as well. He'll be 38, so he'd be a stopgap, and certainly take a one year deal. .336/442 career, .342/.426 last three years, and .360/.486 vs. LHP.

Mark DeRosa--Has struggled the past couple years, but plenty capable, and has played plenty of 2B/LF/RF, though at 37, is likely best served at 1B/3B. .341/.416 career, .317/.393 since '09, and .370/.481 vs. LHP

LHP.

If you think I missed someone, let me know. Ramblings' oft-mentioned favorite, Xavier Nady, played three games at 3B a long time ago, but would have to be paired with an individual able to play 2B/SS/3B, though that's possible.

Last night the Brewers apparently won the rights to negotiate with Norichika Aoki, a seemingly near perfect fit for a reserve OF spot. With Braun and Hart in LF/RF, and a platoon of Morgan/Gomez in CF, a lefty OBP bat that can play all three spots was preferred.

While we have heard Aoki's arm is weak, I can't imagine it being any worse than Morgan's, and to be honest, I'd rather have a guy who huts the cutoff man that can't throw than Charlie Cannon that throws the ball in the air to the intended base all the time. It would be nice if Aoki had the ability to hit a few HR's, and time will tell, as usually, 15 HR power in Japan translates to doubles power in the US.

As I have discussed earlier, Kottaras and Gomez are almost assured reserve spots, and if they go with a dozen arms as expected, that leaves three openings. If Aoki gets one, two remain. That leaves several areas that will have to be filled by the remaining two backups, which I will list below:

1. Platoon/depth for Gamel

2. Backup 2B/SS

3. Backup 3B

Notice, that's three tasks that these two guys will have to do. While it is possible that Taylor Green being able to play 2B/3B, and another player could be brought in that can be a capable 1B/SS extra and bats RH (and hits like a 1B, not a SS) ain't bloody likely.

So, it would seem more plausible that one middle infielder is brought in, and one corner infielder that bats RH fills out the roster, while Green, in effect, likely remains the main 2B/3B option in case of injury...but does so from Nashville.

Of course, we have no idea if Aoki will sign, as it is possible the Crew bid only to block him from another team, or that Aoki has no interest in signing in a Midwestern city without a Japanese subculture. Surprisingly though, the player most roster spot most likely to be taken by Aoki doesn't even play the same position.

This is why it is Doug's world, and we're just living in it.

Aoki could literally be a near perfect 4th OF and temporary LF, bats lefty, contact guy, walks/HBP a lot, speedy defender. We'll have to see if they can reach an agreement, if not, the Crew gets their cash back.

After a superb first few seasons, Aoki tailed off last year, only hitting .358/.360, perhaps he was playing at less than full strength, as he had a 900+ OPS the four years prior to that.

They are already calling this a Hershel Walker type haul for the Padres...Latos is a very good and young SP, and under team control for four more years. That said, Volquez is a quality SP, and they now have one of the best young C prospects and best 1B prospects in the game, and a fireballing relief prospect, who has K'd 12 guys every 9 innings he has pitched in the minors.

I can only think of two, Latos can get hurt like every other young pitcher in the game.

Two, let's compare road ERA's:

No doubt Mat has been the better pitcher thus far, and projects better in the future as well. That said, over 180 innings, that's 21 more runs allowed by Edison...and using the rule of ten, that's two wins. Hard to believe six cost controlled years of two very good position players and a reliever won't add up to more than a couple victories. Granted, they get four years of Latos versus two years of Volquez, but that sure seems like a heckuva haul for SD.

I think we all know why this is controversial...mourning a fetus as a child goes against the notion that abortion is just getting rid of a random configuration of cells that may someday develop into a baby.

Look, I despise abortion, but feel it would be far better to attempt to minimize them through education, lowering adoption costs through not allowing legal challenges to parental rights after the fact, and the like than through the courts and intimidating 14/15 year-old girls. At the end of the day, you cannot ignore technology. Abortion will always exist, and I prefer it to be safe and legal, and extremely rare. Truthfully, I'm not a fan of the government attempting to legislate it either.

I hate the fact I agree with President Clinton on that too.

I see you are above them, but according to rumor mongers that do not hesitate to put unproven, unresearched crap on their blogs, your immediate guess that another prescription may have triggered the positive seems to be assumed to be correct all over the internet.

I have avoided them, due to the fact most are "I have a friend who has a friend who heard this at the mall" quality, but if you google "Ryan Braun rumors," you'll find a dozen "stories" which hint that Braun has an STD, is gay/bisexual, and so on. Of course, far less sexy things, such as depression (though I do struggle to believe Braun suffers from depression, heck, I've gotten depressed at times when I realize I'm not Ryan Braun) or asthma could easily be given scrips that include a banned substance.

Heck, when I was suffering through ulcers and dehydration last summer (before I contracted lyme disease), my labs were off-the-charts in a couple areas...and a couple weeks later, perfectly normal. It doesn't take a bombshell for a test to be not normal...though those of us who hope this will end well have to have an "out" to explain the supposed synthetic testosterone found.

Let me see if I get this straight...Fangraphs says the Twins should not sign Jason Kubel even though he's better than other options...and never once mentions that Morneau had a concussion (as has Span), and has not fully recovered, that e know of, at least. Span is well below average if he plays LF, and Revere, despite being a plus defender, can't hit a lick. Also, counting on guys like Parmelee (771 career OPS in AA, never played a game in AAA) and Plouffe (668 career OPS) to man 1B/LF/RF/DH spots, seems, at best, shortsighted.

FG has some good stuff at times, but often just seems to throw out unresearched crap like this. The really sad thing is, if guys like Parmelee and Revere really produce and you have to make a move, there will be plenty of teams looking for offense in July. The Twins offense was awful last season, and part of the reason was Kubel missed time with injury. If he wishes to return, MIN should lock him up and not hesitate to do so.

Gov Walker helping out actual people by signing Nick's law. Any coincidence this didn't get done under Gov Doyle?

It might be because I went to high school with Nick, but I've never been more proud of our Governor signing off on this. I can't think of a more important law at the city level I've seen for years.

Obviously most of the credit goes to Nick's dad, Chief Dams, but Gov Walker just keeps impressing me with his actions.

I would guess because Doyle and his ilk feel sorry for the scumbags who commit crimes, and choose to blame society instead of, heaven forbid, demanding that anyone take responsibility for their actions. I can promise you, the idiot that killed Nick will be in an out of trouble his entire life, and will likely kill/injure others and spend significant time in prison for something else. If killing a guy did not lead to significant life changes, he should spend lots of time in a cell, end of story.

Walker even calls it a...Christmas tree. Why? "Because that's what it is," he said. No politically correct crap, just telling it like it is. If Obama woluld be asked that, his answer would be three paragraphs long, and involve several apologys to France.

Those guys look for bad teams because they know they'll at least get a look. Sadly, they see a team like the Crew, who has only a few spots open, and go elsewhere. Doug has had a hard time signing these guys the last few years, after being a top destination when he first arrived.

One of the spots the Brewers will certainly have to fill is that of a utility infielder who can play SS. This despite that many people on message boards apparently think Gonzalez will play every inning of every game, as they have Green and some other non SS entity on the roster...which explains why I just don't have the patience for these boards much anymore.

At this point, it's almost as if the Crew might as well wait until guys are just begging to sign somewhere, maybe even on a minor league deal with an invite to major league spring to be honest, there may well only be a single player left (Ryan Theriot) that does anything (get on base) well enough to justify anything more than that.

Let's be blunt, most guys who can play SS but not good enough to be one of the top 30...or are too young to be available...are pretty generic. In fact, I can probably list many of the traits of the guy the Crew will end up with:

1. Bats RH

2. While not as slow as the average C or 1B, below average speed

3. Gets out about 70% of the time...or more

4. Little power

5. Below average defender

To be honest, even Theriot fits 2 of the 5, and while a solid defensive 2B, is just passable at SS and is unproven at 3B.

And he's the best!

Punto signs with BOS, and gets two guaranteed years. Theriot and Keppinger are by far the two best utility infielders now on the market, and neither is good at all at SS.

They have some of these that are supposed to keep allergens out and cost $30, but we had a furnace guy tell us to buy the cheapest ones and change them every month. We usually change ours on the 1st, but we ran out 2-3 months ago and kept forgetting, but luckily remembered one day when I was at Wal Mart, and found they had a 4 pack for an amazing $2.58.

I don't even mind changing them every month at 60 cents each.

I've always suggested taking a catcher in the first five rounds of the June draft, just because they have so much value compared to other positions, and are in short supply. Considering what the Red Sox just got for Jed Lowrie, a decent but injury prone player, you can probably add SS to that as well...of course, many elite young athletes are drafted as SS's and then are moved elsewhere, so this may be easier said than done.

I think teams should take a serious look at guys that can hit and throw and try and make a catcher out of them, especially if they are slow afoot and don't project to play 1B/3B/LF/RF in the majors. The main C in Appleton this year was Jim Paciorek's son, and I don't believe he was a catcher as an amateur, so maybe they have already began.

Check out this incredibly inept piece by Jim Breen, which has even the commenters ripping on him, so he has taken to Twitter to make fun of them.

I hate it when everyone else is wrong. Heh.

Of course, Breen's casual reaction to the trade was incorrect (as was many others), as he failed to note how much depth went to the Cards, which allowed them to go 6-7 deep in the bullpen, and even gave them several multi-innings guys as well. The Crew had five very solid relief pitchers, and even Estrada and DLC pitched nicely, but for the most part, they had a bunch of one inning pitchers, partially because that's the way they were utilized much of the season, and partially because of age/effectiveness.

Rasmus will be the best long-term player in that trade, and may well breakout to be an all-star, though he has had injury concerns for a young man.

It is truly astounding how many people think middle relief is an area to be taken for granted, as if it can be filled by guys that drop from the sky, with low salaries and 95 mph velocity. Thankfully, Doug is running the team and not those clowns.

Now that seemingly every "important" roster spot has been filled (position player starters, rotation, and four top relievers), the braintrust will begin work on filling the final few spots, the low level bullpen guys, and the bench.

Parra (no options, missed all of '11 due to injury), Braddock ("personal" problems), and Estrada would seemingly have the upper hand for the final 'pen spots. Next up, Dillard (no options), McClendon, Kintzler (returning from injury), DLC, Fiers.

That's a dozen guys fighting for seven spots, and I'm sure there will be a non-roster invite or two in the mix, and/or maybe even another live arm will be picked up, probably on a minor league deal or a non-guaranteed contract.

I assume Kottaras will be the backup catcher, with Maldonado at AAA, and Rivera will be drawing a paycheck too, likely sharing time with Marty at C, with Ishikawa at 1B, and some DH.

One backup OF spot will be taken by Gomez, as the RH half of the CF platoon. That leaves three others, assuming they go with 12 pitchers and 13 position players. A "normal" alignment would be 1 C, 2 INF, and 2 OF, but since they will, in all likelihood, carry a RH 1B to platoon with Mat. That player could be a 1B/OF like Xavier Nady, or a 1B/3B/OF like Casey Blake. Regardless, what other position that guy can play will help them decide what other positions to pursue.

I keep seeing many think Taylor Green will take one reserve spot, and the other would be filled by a SS capable infielder. Green might be a decent fit, as he can play 2B or 3B, bats LH (both Aramis and Rickie hit RH), and supposedly will be taught to play 1B as well. However, Taylor has all three options remaining, and if they see him as having potential to be an everyday player some day, might go down to Nashville to get 500 PA's. If they see him as a reserve, he might well get a bench spot.

I also see many assuming Caleb Gindl or Logan Schafer will be used as a reserve OF...Schafer has only 400 or so PA's above A ball because of injuries, and Gindl was one of the youngest players in AAA in '11. I see both manning the Sounds' OF for most of the season, barring injuries, or Braun missing one-third of the campaign. Think back, who was the last Brewers' youngster to sit on the bench before they being given daily playing time? Hart played 4-5 days a week for a while, but Weeks, Escobar, Braun, Lucroy, and Fielder stayed in AAA until being handed an everyday job.

Especially with the Braun thing being a possibility, I see a veteran OF being brought in, although that could be the same player that is penciled into the 1B platoon.
