Al's Ramblings

I forgot to mention that the vet gave the Rambling dog's ears a clean bill of health when he visited. Cocker spaniels are notorious for ear infections, due to their long, floppy ears and centuries of inbreeding.

The reason I note is, after a decade of buying him ear wash, usually Epi-otic, which for 4 ounces costs about $8-15, depending on how long you're willing to look for a bargain; I found several people online who insisted a 50/50 vinegar/water combo worked just as well.

So far, I guess it does.

I haven't read Rob Neyer since he jumped off the Royals' bandwagon because...they weren't very good (have to see if he locates it again if the kids are as good as many say they are) and he used a pseudonym to criticize a book about Fenway Park that was suspiciously similar to one he wrote, which tanked so badly, it was never even released (except as an e-book, which at the time, was far worse than today).

He's been hiding behind the pay wall at ESPN, and has left, apparently. He is a hollow imitation of Bill James to me, and over the years, has become difficult to read, as he seems caught in some sort of middle ground, between statistical analysis and being unhappy about just about everything (Craig C at Hardball Times is the same way, and he's impossible to read for the most part...irony is, I linked his piece).

I think I read this before, but Old Dogs is well worth your time. Dogs make it all but impossible not to love them as they inevitably decline.

I used to say that upon the death of one dog, I would like to go to the shelter and pick out another "mature" canine, as those are difficult to place. Upon further reflection, if one has unlimited money, patience, and emotion to give, it's probably a good idea. However, as tough as it is watching the Rambling dog...simply age...it ain't the path I wish to take.

Huge game Tuesday night versus Purdue...the Badgers can get in the mix for 2nd place, or be knocked down to the 3rd-6th place battle, in which a game might make the difference between being a #3 seed and a #6 seed.

Great to see Penn State finally doing well, though one more tough road game sucks when you're a Badgers' fan. Seriously, how long has Talor Battle been playing?

The Lions are a perfect example of why you only play a couple tough non-conference games, as they may be hurt by a challenging schedule. 7-4 before the Big Ten started makes it vital for them to win half their league games, plus one in the tourney.

Did not mention what a huge win the Bucks had last night...ATL is a quality team, and they had won six in a row on the road. Down 11 going into the 4th quarter, the Bucks barely missed a shot the entire 12 minutes.

Many seem shocked a player from the NBDL was able to step in and contribute, but I never am. There are at least 40-50 players in the NBDL, and probably twice that in Europe who could swap spots with the 11th-15th men and many of us would never notice. They aren't Brandon Jennings and Andrew Bogut, but they can defend, rebound, and hit open jumpers.

I keep hoping for an easy stretch of games, as the schedule is supposed to ease up, and maybe that'll be coming soon.

The Rambling wife just called from the evil empire of capitalism and asked if I could think of anything we needed. I remembered the Rambling dog was almost out of food. Soon, we were pondering the circle of life, wondering what size bag to purchase.

Our report from the vet was mostly good news, but they also hinted that if he were to move, the Rambling dog should rent, not buy, due to his heart murmur worsening and continued weight loss.

On a related note, just once I wish someone would tell me I was losing too much weight.

Tom H wonders how bad Yuni can be?

The irony to me is, this is just proof that most folks follow the game very casually, even those who try and stay up to date with newer stats and the like. Yuni has never been remotely close to the worst player in MLB, his critics have however, discussed that he is below average and overpaid, which has been, in fact, very true. However, considering SEA and KC are both pitching in to help foot the bill for him in '11, it makes him so inexpensive, one could easily make the argument he's a bargain in 2011.

I wish the Brewers would stop trying to appease "casual" fans by having a lottery option to get Opening Day tickets. Hey, I have no problem saying if you can't buy a 9 pack, you're out of luck...and neither should they. That may create an "opening weekend" atmosphere, as groups and regular joes shut out of the opener choose another day of the opening series (this would work far better on the weekend, but you get the idea).

The anti-war movement is almost entirely fictional, made up by the far-left to discredit the right, and by those with tiny attention spans who will show up anywhere for a party/riot. The fact it has disappeared since Obama took office proves that.

Of course, as I often argue, moderates/independents are not fans of protests, especially if they could be construed as anti-American, or anti-troops. Nothing swings public opinion quicker than some fools getting arrested on the news.

The reaction to the Wells salary dump has been almost universally pro-TOR.

I like to be a contrarian, but if the Angels would have picked up Wells for nothing on waivers and had to pay him $86M, it'd be a terrible pick up. Giving TOR a pair of role players is beyond ignorant, especially Napoli, who is a perfect fit in the AL as a backup C/1B, platoon DH.

Hey, it's one thing to sign a player and have his production fall off, or have him suffer an injury. Going out of your way to acquire a player years after a team overpaid for above average numbers from a player who is aging, who is still owed $20M+ for four more seasons?

Oof.

1/22/2011 01:09:00 PM

(1/22/2011 01:02:00 PM) - Al

TOR admits main reason for Wells' trade was financial.

Also in the news, the sun rises in the eastern sky...

KC thought they got a gift when Meche retired...that was a $12M savings. This was $86M. They might fill a couple holes and make that division even tougher. With the Orioles improvement and youth, I could imagine all five AL East teams being over .500 this year or next.

Over the past four games, Keyon Dooling has averaged 14.8 points and 5.5 assists to just 1.5 turnovers.--Bucks' game notes

I laugh at all the casual fans who thought Dooling was a bad player because he got off to a poor start shooting the ball, playing 8-12 minutes behind Jennings. That's one thing that is overlooked, the Bucks were not just short three starters of late, but three starters who played 36+ minutes a game down the stretch last year, in Jennings, Salmons, and Delfino. The depth that Hammonds built, Dooling, Boykins, CDR, and Maggette, have not been superb, but weaknesses are tough to hide eating up all those minutes.

In the mail today, Scorecasting, the hidden influences behind how sports are played and games are won.

I don't bother getting many free books that are offered to me fr "review," but this one jumped out at me. The author of Freakonomics says it's the closest thing to Freakonomics since the original book. On the press release that was folded inside the front cover, the book promises to answer questions such as:

Why the strike zone is bigger when the count is 3-0.

You have to have one or more elite players to win a title.

It sure is more fun watching the bucks play the Wizards and Cavs than it was the Heat and Celtics.

Great to see Delfino back. When he was criticized last March and April, I simply said I'm pretty sure Skiles would not have him playing 40 minutes a night if he was not helping the team. Often, he would be 2nd, 3rd, or 4th in points, rebounds, assists, and steals. He's never going to be an all-star, but he sure is a nice piece to the puzzle.

The Bucks have been linked to Murphy in the past, and have Mike Redd's expiring contract to offer up.

If Gooden continues to be hampered by his feet, and/or Bogut is less than 100%, it might make sense.

EDIT: For the money to work out, the Bucks may have to take Sasha Vujacic, who is better known as Maria Sharpova's boyfriend. Much like I beg the Brewers to sign Casey Daigle (Mr. Jennie Finch) every year, I'd be OK with that. Both those deals would fall off the cap after this year. Now, does NJ have any reason to make this trade? Sadly, probably not.

Long, but fun article about mayonnaise, and loving it for what it is. I have heard of people mixing it in cakes, desserts, and all sorts of things, to add moistness for the most part. I often use sour cream for the same purpose.

Is it me, or do sub places always have the best mayo, impossible to replicate? Even the packets that say Hellman's on them do not taste like the Hellman's you can buy in the grocery store. Of course, much of it may be, as in the article, I haven't bought anything but reduced fat mayo in a decade or two.

The Rambling dog is at the vet. Not sure whether to hope they find something or not. He's been better the past few days, but we've been "setting him up to succeed" as well, which is exhausting and not real easy to do long-term.

EDIT: Urinary tract infection is the diagnosis, kidneys and other tests look good, for a 15 year-old cocker spaniel at least. We'll get that cleared up and go from there. The Rambling wife reports he has lost 3 pounds, though we have limited his treats since his "stomach issues" last summer...he also has cataracts, and a heart murmur...they told us about the murmur ages ago, but the Rambling wife had forgotten. It's a 4 on a scale of 6...1 being hardly noticeable, 6 being make sure your paperwork is in order.

So, he's coming home today with Amoxicillin, elixir of the Rambling son, myself, and now our dog too. I guess we'll see what happens in the next 7-10 days, and we'll make sure he gets plenty of love as well. The vet was impressed he can catch a treat in the air, so he still sees OK, as of now. We are realistic about his future, but want to give him every chance within reason to live out a pain-free, somewhat normal existence. I do not begrudge the vet's office $50-60 for their time, knowledge, and testing facility, but paying $20 for $3 worth of penicillin does grind my gears a tad.

I don't know if you have heard the reports but wonder your opinion. Apparently there are reports surfacing that the Milwaukee Brewers and the group that owns Lego Land have engaged in the first serious negotiations that would move the Milwaukee Brewers spring training and a minor league team to Winter Haven, Florida. Lego Land is opening a large theme park in Winter Haven and I guess would like to bring a spring training team to its town ala The Atlanta Braves and Walt Disney World. Winter Haven recently hosted the Cleveland Indians before the mass move westward to Arizona and plans have been in place to improve the clubhouse and fitness facilities for years. I have not been to Winter Haven but a quick google search has it roughly a hour from Disney and a hour from Tampa. This seems like first rumor about moving to Florida that actually makes sense. A major theme park with land and money and a team whose lease is up in a year. Makes sense to me.

Mayhem

I can't think who I heard it from, but I do recall someone saying about a year ago that the Brewers were "as good as gone" from Arizona once their lease was up, and the only question was if they would stay if Maryvale agreed to upgrade, or if the papers were already signed for the move to FL.

I can't say I have much opinion on the matter, to be honest, as exhibition baseball, hot weather, and the like mean next to nothing to me. The contrarian in me thinks that since AZ has been the trend of late, there are probably deals to be had in Florida.

I just checked last night, and I see the Badgers play Northwestern next Sunday at 1PM...I assume the Packers will play the late game, as they are father west than NE or PIT, and I seem to recall that's how they decide. I'll be far more interested in the hoops than the gridiron, to say the least.

EDIT: I just remembered if SEA wins, the game will be out there, so obviously that would be the late game. That said, I think they do have the city closest to the Pacific play the late game.

The death of common sense, and the rise of overregulation.

It not only strangles business, but charitable efforts as well. I am surprised to see such silliness in Texas, however.

This reminds me of a woman who lost her job, and started baking muffins and other goodies at home, and took them to office buildings to sell. She supported herself for a few weeks, until someone asked to see a "vendor permit," or some other ridiculous piece of paper designed to fill the coffers of local government. When trying to get one, she was turned down because her home did not have a triple sink...one for washing, other for rinsing, and one for disinfecting. She informed the inspector her family had been living there for 20 years and managed to get along fine...no matter, it was written right there in the rules.

She finally gave up and...wait for it...applied for welfare, which the state happily provided for her...not so many darn rules for that.

1/15/2011 01:22:00 PM

(1/15/2011 12:36:00 PM) - Al

Gleeman discusses Thome's signing.

DH's are so underpaid, this is how I'd find one every year...wait until a few guys are left and sign them to a short-term, cheap deal. Worst case scenario, you end up with some sort of platoon like Gabe Gross and Ronnie Belliard...they'd probably be close to league average, and you can always look to improve at the deadline.

Also, I find it funny the A's seem to have come to the conclusion that relievers are undervalued, first signing Balfour and now after Fuentes. Many know-it-alls in the baseball community have decided going cheap with your bullpen is a good idea, but at the end of the day, pretending those 500 innings your relievers throw is somehow less important than the others seems really shortsighted to me. Now, is Soriano vastly overpaid at $11M for 70 set-up frames? Without a doubt. But saying Greinke is worth $12M for his 200 projected frames, but Furntes is not worth $5M for his 70 high leverage innings...Houston, we have a math problem.

Beane is legendary at waiting out the market and finding bargains. I still hope Doug has a #6/7 SP up his sleeve, hopefully on a minor league deal. AS of this second, I'd say Mark rogers and Amaury Rivas would be a the SP depth, with possibly Manny Parra as the #8 guy, damn the stats that show him far less effective in the rotation.

Chris Christie keeps getting press like this, he might be president someday. Spend less to make up for less money coming in? Who woulda think it?

This might be why all the attempts to make tea party folks look goofy has failed...77% agree with them.

Personally, I wonder how anyone can look at spending and think they need to, ahem, spend more.

Again, I will take this opportunity to repeat, I was a fiscal conservative before it was cool. It's one of life's greatest ironies, government spends so much money; yet, they really, really suck at it.

(1/13/2011 06:44:00 PM) - Al

Al, I agree with exactly your point and what Craig wrote for the exception of two things.

1.) The president actually spoke WITHOUT a teleprompter. Let me repeat that again, he spoke WITHOUT a teleprompter. I am as shocked as you. And I think that was the most impressive part of the night for me and why it sounded so well. He actually attempted to connect with the people regardless of the silver spoon kids that treated him like a Backstreet Boy.

2.) I think the president will never admit it but you could tell that he was upset with the tone of the night in general. It caused his speech to go over 30 minutes when aides had predicted earlier in the day it would be between 12-17 minutes. I think he wanted to strike a certain tone, and prove to the world, not just the United States, that Hilary Clinton wasn't right in the campaign and that he is the guy to answer the phone and react to his crisis. And while the event in general struggled to control an out of control and disgusting group of kids from screaming and clapping I think he did better then expected.

This whole thing in Arizona is and has been surreal. In a event where a 9 year old died, we are talking if mean words are the reason. It is sad.

Mayhem

If he would have told the preppy brats spending daddy's money to shut the hell up and quit acting like it was a party, that would have been incredibly presidential and long-lasting.

1/13/2011 06:44:00 PM

(1/13/2011 05:44:00 PM) - Al

Good Morning Al,

I've been reflecting on the event last night in Tuscon. While I admit that the President gave a good speech and did so properly, I still have issue with the way the event was done. While I understand the once in a lifetime opportunity to see the president and other national figures was it appropriate to turn what was supposed to be a night of remembrance into a night at a University of Arizona pep rally. What last night established to me was that our nation's youth have ZERO respect for anything outside their own agenda. While some applause was appropriate at times, the single mentions of the University of Arizona, the students, the south side of Tuscon, and my favorite democrat turned a "memorial service" into a campaign stop/pep rally for ten thousand self centered fools. It got to the point where I was waiting for the Phoenix Suns gorilla mascot to come out and start doing dunks off a trampoline. If I was a member of a family effected by the events I would have been close to walking out.

I do commend the President on how he handled the night. He told the crowd to sit on my count 3 separate times, talked through several inappropriate ovations, and looked genuinely upset with the crowd at several instances in the speech. While his speech was shockingly void of political overtones he defiantly missed the opportunity to specifically clear at least Sarah Palin of clear wrong doing.

I hope today on the campus of the University of Arizona and around the country there is a serious discussion about behavior at a "memorial service" and the proper way to act in certain events.

Thanks,
Craig

Did not see it, but our local talk show this morning complained about the pep rally/campaign style atmosphere. I will say this...I don't think the Obama folks are capable of holding anything but a rah, rah style event.

Did it turn people off? Probably, but it is two years 'til the next election and it was not as horrendous as the MN Dems who "memorialized Wellstone" until Fritz Mondale was sitting at home, watching Norm Coleman become Senator, wondering what could have been had Bozo the Clown not been in charge.

It goes back to immediately assigning blame, as it turns out, 100% incorrectly. When no time is taken to mourn, let things calm down, and so on, inappropriate things occur. The president is a very skillful reader of teleprompters. Add all that up, you get a decent speech with buffoons listening, waiting to cheer and/or make a point.

I assume so, but far be it for me to predict what the holier than thou baseball writers will decide to do five years from now, and at best, they have no idea how to judge a player (see Alomar elected, Larkin not but will be, and Trammell not close...three similar players.

Glenn wonders about sympathy votes for Palin, among other things, should she ever run. Funny, just yesterday a woman mentioned to me "I feel a woman's place is taking care of her husband, and the children. But, if she were to win, I'd love to see those reporters all mad and unhappy."

I doubt if that's enough to win, but I have little doubt she "could" win the nomination, just like Huckabee and others "could" win, and then struggle with independents (or so-called Reagan Democrats) in the general election. But, there have been plenty of moderates (McCain and Rudy spring to mind) I have supported that did not have much luck in the Fall either.

In basketball, mistakes are made on most every possession, but some stand out a lot more. Needless to say, turnovers will lose you a lot of games, as you not only often give up the ball in a bad defensive position, you don't even give yourself a chance to score any points of your own. Even more surprisingly, the most glaring TO's late were by Leuer and Wilson, two upperclassmen who should know better...forcing the ball to the basket with a lead and dribbling between your legs with a defender on you are not the types of plays that will win you games.

That's why it's so tough to win on the road...it's easy to let a minor goof lead to another.

The Rambling dog is getting older, soon to be 15. For the most part, his health has been ok, but he is slipping in many ways. Last Summer, he seemed to be mixed up mentally, and he still has times when he seems confused. Oddly, when it was time for bed last night, he ignored his bed and spent the entire night sleeping between the Rambling wife and I. Once, a couple months ago, he started out with us but moved down to his bed during the night. It's been years since he did not sleep on his own bed at all, in fact, the last time I recall it is when we stayed in a hotel, way back when we lived in the Twin Cities.

I found some info last Summer on dogs' mental decline, and it read like the author had studied our canine companion. Dogs, just like us, get older, and they do not get healthier as they age.

Tomorrow's op-ed from the Wall Street Journal, today.

1/09/2011 08:23:00 PM

(1/09/2011 07:39:00 PM) - Al

Recently, the Rambling wife's favorite uncle (well, I think the only one that reads Ramblings) e-mailed me a question. He recently started receiving Social Security, and says he and his friends are puzzled why the Social Security office is always full of, well, young people. He wonders how many SS recipients are actually 62 and over, and how many are "non-traditional" folks that get a check.

Thankfully, this is why Google exists.

In December 2009, 15 percent of Social Security beneficiaries were disabled workers; 8 percent were children; 8 percent were widows, widowers and parents; and 5 percent were spouses. The remaining 64 percent of beneficiaries were retired workers.

For argument sakes, let's assume all "retired workers" are indeed 62 or older.

64%

I am also going to assume all disabled workers and children are under 62. The tricky part is figuring out what percentage of widows, widowers, parents, and spouses are 62 or older.

Now, I would figure they mean "widows and widowers" if they are drawing off their dead spouses' SS, and not their own. Most of these would probably get a smaller amount they earned, but get more because their spouse passed away. I'm going to say these people are 62 and over, though a fraction may not be.

This, from the SS website:

When you die, certain members of your family may be eligible for survivors benefits. These include widows, widowers (and divorced widows and widowers), children and dependent parents. The number of "dependent parents" is small, I work with retired folks and have never had a single one tell me they get their child's SS benefits. And, most of them would be 62 or older, correct? For simplicity, we're going to round up and take them all.

64% + 8%

Now, spouses. Of that generation, mostly women get their late hubby's benefits, because they made more money. Again, simply for ease of ciphering, I'm just going to figure all of them are 62 or older, as we know most are.

64% + 8% + 5% = 77%

Considering we likely rounded up a couple times, I'd say it's probably right around 3 out of 4 folks on SS are "traditional" retired folks, 62 or over.

Luckily for most of you, there will not be a quiz on this later.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, some folks send me e-mails wishing I'd just talk about the Brewers. And then, there's folks like Uncle Fave, who have told me, "I really don't care about that sport stuff, but I like reading the others." See, it's impossible to keep everyone happy.

Andrew Bogut, coming off his career-best 27-rebound performance on Friday, will not be available for the Bucks on Saturday night due to a virus.

Bucks coach Scott Skiles said before the game against New Jersey that 6-foot-10 Ersan Ilyasova would start at center, and Corey Maggette also would move into the starting lineup at small forward, with Luc Richard Mbah a Moute shifting to the power forward spot.--JS

Pretty much on cue, a few days after the Bucks release backup center Brian Skinner.

It's one thing to be banged up, it's another to be unlucky. But, to be both is hellishly demoralizing.

Nate Silver is having a bad few months. His babble is proven incorrect every time he picks up his mythical pen. One has to wonder what he actually once did not suck at in order to get the gigs he now has.

{On a related note, I think if you go to his website, he may have John Edwards as the early leader for the 2016 Dem nomination, but hence, I digress.}

I think this just goes to remind us all that the average 6-10 or 7-9 team is a couple bad breaks away from sneaking into the playoffs and possibly having some success. Words like "terrible" and "crappy" are thrown out often in today's sports world, but in reality, there isn't a whole lot of difference between most mediocre clubs.

Going for it on 4th and 1 at your own 37 is almost as stupid as an onside kick to open the 2nd half. However, since one worked and another didn't, most will look at them differently.

It's also just astounding how many delay of game penalties we see, it seems like more in the NFL than in college.

Gleeman notes the passing of Ryne Duren, who was born somewhere in SW WI, my original neck of the woods. His sister was our state legislator/senator when I was a child as well.

Talk about odd recollections, I can remember her on the radio arguing that they should lower the speed limit to 40 or 45, because gas mileage was better at that speed.

{This was back in the 70's, think OPEC and Carter wearing a sweater, telling people to turn down the heat and effectively, vote for the GOP next time.}

I doubt if it is, and I drive 55-60 all the time to conserve fuel, but talk about a losing platform. The Rambling wife is still going 40 when she pulls into the garage.

I'm not sure what the current strategy is, but it ain't working. As silly as it sounds realistically, the Dems might be better off with a primary candidate defeating the incumbent. Plenty of time to right the ship, but I don't think it's possible for an administration to be anymore lost than the current one.

64% of House Dems could not support legislation that passed as "ground breaking," with the old media not understanding how the GOP could be against it.

Minivans have largely been replaced by SUV's, both small ones like the Vue and bigger ones. That said, if you have a lot of crap to lug around, minivans are roomy and get decent mileage.

I drove the Rambling wife's Vue a few days when they replaced my spark plugs and wires (turns out, spark plugs are meant to be replaced, like brakes and tires, who knew?), and was amazed how quickly a tank of gas went, even though it holds far more than my Saturn SL1.

I'm a bit troubled by the fact that an administration that has spent, spent, and overspent with no regard at all for how much they spent suddenly has no problem cutting troops, as if by a snap of a finger.

Clinton absolutely gutted our military, which has left the remaining members having to serve multiple tours in war zones. There is far more that can be written, but suffice it to say, I would have found about a bijillion things to cut and reduce before even considering lowering the number of "boots on the ground." And, though nothing will be said, it kind of goes without saying that administrations cut things they don't care for...the military tends to be Southern, conservative, and very pro 2nd amendment.

Uggla, 5y/$62M.

Ugg. (Heh, see that little play on words/sounds? I'll be here all week.)

Considering he's not very good on defense, and older than Weeks, you could argue Weeks projects better in the next 4-5 years. However, Uggla's HR power in his career and Rickie's health concerns will hold his price down. That said, I can easily imagine Weeks getting 4y/$30M or 5y/$35M. Heck, it only takes one team to give him more than that.

Adam looks at why Yuni Betancourt is disliked in some stat circles, and it turns out, it depends on the defensive metric...some rate him top 25%, some far lower, like ultimate zone rating, which for my money, is the only one I pay attention to.

Another key is this...many have trouble separating a player who makes decent coin from one who makes the minimum. If Yuni was a minor league vet making near minimum, some goofball like me would say he's a diamond in the rough type. But, pay him $1-3M a year (depending on how you look at the money KC is kicking in), and whoa-is-me, he's not very good and getting paid. In reality, however, if a team can get any production at all for $2M, they're thrilled.

My feeling remains the same...take a look at AAA SS's out there, who may classify as "free talent"...I'm thrilled Luis Cruz or his twin is not penciled in at SS for the Crew. Betancourt does have a low OBP, but for a SS, not really. He has a good SLG for the position, and his defense is about -12 runs over 150 games...while a run every couple weeks is far from ideal, no one can tell by watching...you know that because McGehee improved from -19 in 2009 to -4 in 2010, and people still say he's horrible in the field...in reality, he's almost average.

One of the best uses of Twitter is to see how painfully casual fans are about the sports they watch. Wisconsin and TCU played a very good Rose Bowl game, came down to a play here and there, yet all the casuals think the Badgers easily could have beat the horned Frogs, oh, about 77-3 if they only would have done one or two simple things...yet, no consensus has yet to form, because the people talking are incredibly simple, casual observers.

Note to Badgers' fans, they were a 3 point dog for a reason. The fact many seemed to think they would blow them out is not an indication the team played poorly, it's an indication of how little you know.

Also, the Rambling wife pointed out the crowd was split almost 50-50 by color, red on one side, purple on the other. Even with outlets like Stub Hub, most fans still bought through traditional outlets.

Somehow, the idea that fans who have traveled thousands of miles and spent money on tickets, travel, and lodging...somehow will be damaged financially by an $8 beer...a bit lacking in common sense, to day the least.

Not to mention, beer should be priced higher to keep those who can't control themselves from killing anyone on the drive home/back to the hotel. 25 cent beer nights don't exist anymore for a reason. As a market driven guy, I hate to see artificially high floors put on products. That said, let's not pretend it's harmless either. I'd be far more unhappy with a $5 bottle of water than a $10 beer. Truth is, they probably have both, and the fans can decide.
