Both Letters of Intents are in... Lookin at both of dem and is like Damn--DeAndre Herron

Herron is a top OL prospect from Indiana, who committed to Louisville a long time ago. He has since visited Indiana and is trying to decide between Louisville and Indiana. I would assume he's struggling because his home state team has appeal, and he'd probably get to play sooner. Who knows, he might well have a girlfriend he would like to stay close to.

Talk about a strange thing...many high school athletes would give anything to have a D1 scholarship offer...heck, in the Wausau area, the news covers a D2 signing just as heavily as a D1, and often carries D3 and NAIA signings. At this moment, he'd probably give anything to just have it be done.

Special forces will be especially hurt by defense cuts.

As the article says, I have a spare tire in my car, not because I'll need it today, but because I know I'll need it someday.

I'm frustrated because they spend money like it doesn't matter, and when the talk turns to cuts, they run straight to the military.

Bovada Poker announces a two month series of tournaments, Feb. 6- Apr. 1, big guarantee for the main event.

Since the DOJ has stated online poker is legal at the moment (a few months after they in effect, shut it down, we're in the very best of hands), feel free to go to Bovada (Bovada is what used to be Bodog, by the way) and get ready to play, nanny staters be damned.

The irony is, there are literally hundreds of offshore sports books operating, which is illegal per the 1960 Wire Act, and the DOJ has not done a thing to prosecute them. Even George Orwell would shake his head.

I've mentioned before that Jackson and Devin Harris match up almost perfectly money wise for a trade. Chris Kaman makes $4.8M more, so that's not going to work.

1/30/2012 09:19:00 PM

(1/30/2012 09:16:00 PM) - Al

Stephen Jackson did not play in the first half. This occurs often when a team has a trade in the works, as the Hornets have not played Chris Kaman since they decided to deal him last week.

EDIT: Beno and Brandon played at the same time, so something is up. They haven't done that for a month.

EDIT 2: Bucks up 20, 2 minutes left, bench cleared, Jackson still sits. Something's up, and Jim/Jon seem to be going out of their way not to bring it up.

Brewers sign Corey Patterson to minor league deal. Veteran OF to play LF in Nashville Gord Ash spoke of, I assume. About a .300/.415 career hitter vs. RHP, can't hit LHP at all.

Patterson is fast and is solid defensively, but has never hit enough to get much playing time. That said, as AAA depth, he's a solid option. With Logan Schafer and Caleb Gindl also in Nashville, and also LH hitters on the 40 man, I doubt Corey will get a look in MIL, but he's a good guy to have. I'm sure Doug would trade him for nothing if another team called and promised him a 25 man spot.

And yes, Corey spent a month or so in Nashville and September with the Crew in 2009, so I'm sure that relationship led to this signing. Patterson is one of those guys just on the cusp of being a 5th OF, but just has never developed the plate discipline. Nice AAA depth, but if he's in the majors for any length of time with the Crew, lots has gone wrong.

Adam confirms the plan is for Patterson to play LF in Nashville. At this point, I assume Corey is just looking for regular playing time to be noticed and get a major league spot.

Federal government surveys show hunger and poverty is almost nonexistent in the US.

I've discussed this many time, as only in America is someone with a house, car, cable/satellite TV, dishwasher, AC, cell phone, and DVD/DVR considered "poor."

In many nations, this is considered royalty/very wealthy.

This will be completely ignored in the old media, though it says a lot about the extreme optimism that many of us see in Reagan's America.

No motion or shifting by the offense

Not allowed to rush a punt, PAT or FG attempt--special rules for Pro Bowl

The Rambling brother just e-mailed asking if I was watching the game, and I had actually just switched over from the CONCAF women's final. I wonder why no press coverage is allowed, as the game is plenty offensive in nature. I read no 3 WR sets were allowed, but that must have been changed, as I've seen several.

Public transit often gets you there late and grumpy.

I've told this story before, but I always used to give an associate at TRU a ride home on Sunday nights, because if she left the store at 9PM, she would get home at 10:45. If I gave her a ride, she'd get home at...wait for it, 9:12. It was up the highway a mile, take the exit, and less than a mile from there. It was so long because the 9:10 bus might come at 9:05, or maybe 9:30, and then, she had to change buses after waiting 25-30 minutes.

No one puts up with that unless they simply have no choice.

Occupy Oakland throws rocks and bottles at police, then complain about being tear gassed. Damn near destroyed city hall.

As I predicted, the druggies and thugs that make up the group have pretty much gone back to shooting up and vandalizing, except where the weather is still warm, where unfortunately, they're still violent and ne'er-do-wells, and accomplishing absolutely nothing.

Pelosi and Reid, by the way, have not spoken out against these clods at all, after ignorantly supporting them back when they were thought of as too stoned to do much damage.

I wish someone would decide what catastrophic climate condition I should stay awake worrying about at night.

And yes, the planet's warming trend ended in 1997, almost to the day when Al Gore started preaching and lying to us, as he made his fortune lacking honesty and ethics.

EDIT: Already an e-mail asking how gratifying it is to see Gore's fictionumentary literally rendered worthless. It's been fiction to me since it came out, and thousands of e-mails prove it. It ain't science, it's fraud for profit.

EDIT 2: Don expects the US media to bury their heads in the sand...does not fit the narrative. And, to be blunt, it's embarrassing to be 100% wrong for the past fifteen years. Like the climategate e-mail scandal, the old media will cover other stuff and continue to forget to ask Obama why they have not submitted a budget in three years, while then asking Gingrich when he quit beating his 2nd and 3rd wife.

Brewers expect to have record attendance season.

Expect might be a bit strong, but that's their goal, and I'm sure they're excited and also trying to create a buying atmosphere. Remember, a ticket purchased now is one less that has to be sold later, be it on a snowy, windy night or a damp, chilly evening in September.

It goes unsaid also that they expect to have a contending team. If they're 55-61 in mid-August, lots of luck selling those remaining weeknights the rest of the way. That's why they want to sell them now.

Funny how many people said last year Drew Gooden was such a terrible player. His career line of 11 points, 8 boards, 75% FT, and 47% FG is almost exactly what you'd expect from a PF, and as an undersized center, he's really playing tough since Bogut went out.

NO trying to trade Chris Kaman, a solid if unspectacular veteran center who is in the last year of his contract, making $14M.

Unfortunately for the Bucks, the Hornets have no interest in trading him for another overpaid veteran...supposedly, they are asking for a young contributor, a draft pick, and trade exception money.

I'm 95% sure the Bucks did not pick up any "trade exception" in a swap, so they'd have to get creative in some sort of multiteam deal.

Not only haven't they cut hardly anything except defense, they're spending more on pork and bizarro economic theory than they are even considering cutting.

It ain't a revenue problem. You can outspend any amount of money coming in, and the current state of fiscal generational theft proves it.

Our freezer out in the garage hasn't been working up to its potential (and my sit down intervention had no effect at all), so while I was grilling lunch, the Rambling wife checked it out. While roasts and meats were still hard as a rock, the french bread we brought in for lunch was so soft it was ready to eat, like it was fresh from the oven (except it was cool, not warm). Turns out, no fewer than six outlets, outside, garage, and dining room were not working, but no circuit breakers had popped.

She checked the one on our deck, hit reset, and nothing. Then, she hit test and reset, and suddenly, all the outlets are functional again. Irony is, we can't recall using the deck outlet since before Xmas, so we've probably just been getting by with an insulated box for a month plus. None of the other five outlets had anything plugged in (one was behind our hutch, I didn't even know one existed there).

At least this happened in the winter, even if it has been warmer than usual.

If the Crew wants a 1B/OF to platoon/protect Gamel, this guy hits RH and is just 25.

His splits show he hit LHP and RHP about equally last season in AAA. Good pop in his bat, takes his walks, and by the looks of it, has options remaining.

The Rays system is loaded, so they are a good team to poach as their 40 man fills up.

Honestly, I doubt if he makes it to the Crew, SEA and HOU, for example, should both grab him in a second.

EDIT: Gleeman agrees, and points out he was the IL MVP last season.

EDIT 2: In glancing at his minor league numbers, he has played about 100 games at 3B as well. He'd be a nice pickup, especially since he likely has an option or two.

BP says the Tigers infield defense will be about 20 runs below average, which, while bad, isn't even the worst INF Fielder or Cabrera have ever been a part of.

20 runs is a lot to make up, but replacing Inge's 550ish OPS with Prince or Miguel makes up for it, plus some.

EDIT: Inge is unhappy. He's always been a selfish player, not wanting to catch part-time so the Tigers could save a roster spot, so it's far from surprising. Considering his '11 campaign was historically bad, I'm sure no one cares.

The Badgers held Indiana to just 50 pts, its lowest output of the year (previous low was 63 at OSU). 50 pts is also 29.8 below IU's avg.--Patrick Herb

If you can defend like that, you're going to be in every game. Badgers had one bad loss (home vs. Iowa), but otherwise, have been just like always; tough, gritty, and usually coming out on top.

I have to think that Jon Leuer will gain a lot of playing time with Bogut down...and while he will be up and down, I hope he can develop a bit of a mean streak, as he's been pushed around quite a bit under the basket thus far. I don't think Drew Gooden is physically capable of playing much more than 20-25 minutes a night, and he looks like he's in constant pain. His vertical jump means he plays shorter than his actual height.

Be great if Leuer and Larry Sanders can at least provide some defense and rebounding...Leuer has shown he can shoot the ball.

Nothing funnier than reading the comments on the betting site regarding the Badgers/Hoosiers...UW favored by 7, and late game WIS free throws and IND misses made it a 7 point victory, a push. People who had bet the Hoosiers thought they had it sewn up, and, are a bit frustrated to say the least.

JCPenney changes to everyday low prices, merch marked down 40%.

Be interesting to see how this works. Target used to run jewelry on sale 50 weeks a year, and changed it to ELP, and sales plummeted. They actually have paid fines because some states get on them for the "sale" price being the regular price.

A's DFA a former top pick/prospect that can play all over the field.

Probably have several teams making offers for him, anyone who can play the infield and has any offensive ability at all will draw attention.

EDIT: Farris may be a better defensive 2B, but this guy is far more versatile and a better hitter, and younger. No way I would not do that swap, if the opportunity presented itself.

(1/26/2012 01:28:00 PM) - Al

Jim Leyland: "Miguel Cabrera is going to play 3B...let me make it perfectly clear."--Bowden

This would seem to give Cabrera at least the first couple months at 3B, though he may well be removed late in games. 3B don't really get many balls hit to them, and teams do not bunt much (for instance, no one bunted at Prince in his time in MIL). I assume his range will be limited, but if he hits like normal, most fans won't even notice.

Considering it's a power park and they won 90 games last year, DET may be the favorite to lead the AL in wins at this second.

Cabrera is about 5 runs below average at 3B for his career. Even if he can come in at -10 for '12, if he hits like he has, no one will care. He's replacing Brandon Inge's 548 OPS in the lineup. That makes McGehee's poor '11 look like Babe Ruth.

Kevin Whelan DFA'd by Yankees. Has struck out more than a batter per inning his entire career. He'll get plenty of attention, though he only throws 91. Must do it with a deceptive motion or something, he throws almost all fastballs and splits.

You're seeing some very good players DFA'd, as rosters are full, as young prospects have had to be added and free agents have had to be added to the 40. Right now and late March are excellent times to be poaching.

Fielder's first free agent years...9y/$214M.

Braun's first free agent years, on his two extensions...7y/$127M (or 8y/$138M, if option is exercised).

This is why teams sign players to long-term deals, to give the player security at a huge discount.

By the way, Keith Law said Braun's contract was terrible. There's a reason he's not working for a MLB team, my friends.

Fangraphs has a mix of quality stuff, but posts so much junk like this, it's tough to hunt for the non-sucky stuff.

Prince, as of today, is a 1B who is just a few runs below average. He is by no measure a DH, as he's played 150+ games at 1B since he debuted seven seasons ago. His build certainly does not suggest him to age gracefully, but for any site that claims to be anything more than ESPN fanboys, calling him a DH is woefully embarrassing.

Just asking: If Prince Fielder winds up entertaining offers of seven years, wouldn't that put him back in range of Milwaukee Brewers?--Olney

Supposedly, the Crew offered 5y/$100M+, and said a sixth year was something they would discuss...Boras never got back to them. Now, they've done a lot since then, extended Weeks, signed Ramirez and Gonzalez, settled with KRod in arby.

Rumor has it that DC and Prince are putting something in the 6-8 year range together. I said before last season that I thought Prince would end up in BAL or DC, and as things progressed, I just felt BAL made so much more sense (because of the DH, gaping hole at 1B, and need for a rebirth of the franchise), that eventually, he would end up there.

For Brewers' fans, DC is a near perfect destination, as their first round pick is the highest one that is not protected. A mid 1st round pick and a choice between the 1st and 2nd rounds is a pretty decent return.

I'm pro-choice, and also anti-abortion, which I realize straddles that fence in a manner usually reserved for those in elected office. I just don't feel the government has any right to tell people what to do, at least until the baby (and yes, we all know it's a baby, let's not be ignorant and call it an embryo) can live on it's own, which is about 5 months into the pregnancy. If technology someday allows a fertilized egg to survive just after conception, I'll be in favor of ending abortion. Until that day, to me, it's a medical procedure that I wish fewer women would choose to have.

All that said, remember when Obama was a brilliant speaker? Saying abortion gives our daughters the same opportunity to succeed as our sons has to be one of the clumsiest statements in presidential history.

Direct quotes from Dan Patrick, hat tip to JS:

"There were whispers that this was a personal medical issue, that he was taking something for that, that may have spiked his test. I since found out (Sunday) that that is not the case.

"Ryan Braun may be exonerated here. He may be found innocent. And judging from all of the information I was told, there's a good chance that he should be."

Patrick went on to say that MLB is "cut and dried" about what is allowed to be in a player's system but said what Braun tested positive for "wasn't a masking agent."

"The bigger issue here is the testing and was Ryan Braun a victim of the testing by Major League Baseball," added Patrick. "Let's see how this plays out... The feeling I got (Sunday) from somebody involved in the process in this, it's not as cut and dried as people would think. And Ryan Braun may be an innocent man."

And by the way, not only did MLB allow the original test result to leak, they also have a leak in the appeal process. Painful.

Kyle Hudson released by BAL, hard to figure they couldn't find a taker for a speedy OF with a .380 OBP in AAA. He'll ignite a minor bidding war, very nice 5th OF with some upside.

Bucks defeat Heat in Miami for the second year in a row. They do match up well, as Jennings and Bogut are simply far better than their 1 and 5. Might well have been a depth/rest issue, as MIA was minus DWade, and on their 3rd game in 4 days, while the Bucks were healthy and only playing their 2nd game in 5 days.

In my view, the Bucks are over .500 now, as they have more road wins than home losses. Of course, they still have to "hold serve" at home, as they have played four more away tilts.

Meghan McCain is unhappy about this (and when full figured blondes are unhappy, I'm unhappy), but we all know SC is a very conservative state that is going to go for the GOP candidate regardless (barring a third party run by a Ron Paul type). I have to wonder if much of the "bounce" Newt got is not due to a dislike of the old media and an attempt to send a message, as in a "Well the hell with 'em, I'm voting for him anyway." Everyone loves an underdog, and the silly folks on the left that moderated the debate, once again, don't know how much they are despised in flyover country.

And as many have pointed out, nurses/medical workers wear scrubs all the time, and they're just pajamas for those with medical schooling. If you can save lives and do surgery in comfy attire, you can do damn near anything.

To be honest, the idea that you need to put a scrap of fabric around your collar to be respected is about as dumb as it gets.

A quick post about my latest venture into the land of healthy eating and exercise, down 20 pounds in 2.5 weeks.

I've had a couple e-mails of late from folks saying they wanted to lose a few pounds and started soon after the new year...and both said they were amazed by how hard it was, both to eat less and healthy, and to work out. A couple thoughts:

1. Yes it is. I'm hungry all the time, and have been drinking a couple big mugs of hot chocolate each day, which helps for some reason. It's "diet," so it has 20-40 calories a cup, because cocoa is a natural source of sugar or calories. I put more water in you're supposed to and add some Equal to make it "sweeter" even though it's not chocolatier. I think the warmth of it makes it seem more filling. I've been riding the exercise bike for 30-60 minutes a day, and a couple days a week, I take a couple sessions.

2. I've been taking one day each week off, which I'm shocked to hear so many people recommend and insist it works. It also helps keep you sane. Supposedly, it tricks your body into burning calories faster, as well as the mental benefits of knowing it's not forever...you can eat good in just a few days. I've seen Dr. Oz say it's a good idea, one of the gals on The Revolution even said to "take it easy" on the weekends, she guarantees if you give her 5 days a week and relax on the weekends, in a year, you'll be in far better shape.

{As you can tell, I've been home doing stuff on the computer, working to get appointed with my new agency. TV in the daytime makes it easy to concentrate on work stuff.}

It's a long road, but I'm just pissy enough (or I tell myself I am) to keep it up.

It's working. Money quote:

At the outset of the public-union standoff, educators had made dire predictions that Walker’s reforms would force schools to fire teachers. In February, to take one example, Madison School District Superintendent Dan Nerad predicted that 289 teachers in his district would be laid off. Walker insisted that his reforms were actually a job-retention program: by accepting small concessions in health and pension benefits, he argued, school districts would be able to spare hundreds of teachers’ jobs. The argument proved sound. So far, Nerad’s district has laid off no teachers at all, a pattern that has held in many of the state’s other large school districts. No teachers were laid off in Beloit and LaCrosse; Eau Claire saw a reduction of two teachers, while Racine and Wausau each laid off one. The Wauwatosa School District, which faced a $6.5 million shortfall, anticipated slashing 100 jobs—yet the new pension and health contributions saved them all.

Read the whole thing, and as you go into the weekend, be thankful we have someone with an ounce of common sense as our governor, whose only plan for every single problem isn't "spend more money that we take from the person who earned it."

Someday, someone will have to get rid of our federal deficit. Luckily, someone already has taken care of our state's.

Al,

Your supper sounds pretty good to me. I had two messages from my wife at lunch, one to come right home after work, because she's going to the casino with friends, and the kids will be alone. The second call was to tell me to pick up supper, because one of the kids has friends coming over, and there's no food in the house.

And to think, my single friends waste their Friday nights drinking and hitting on pretty single women, without a care in the world. Poor saps. I get to feed about 7-8 kids, and only 2 of 'em are mine. Then on Saturday, I get to spend most of the day at a band contest, selling popcorn, candy, and pop to middle school kids. The wife volunteered me for that because "all you do on weekends is sit and watch football."

I love Devin Harris, and have longed for the Bucks to acquire him, as he's been dealt several times. Right now, he is struggling, and it may be a buy low opportunity.

I saw much of the game last night, and I have to wonder how healthy he is...he literally missed a late game 3 by several feet...an air ball, off to the left of the rim. For a player who has probably taken over a million shots, missing by that much tells me he is in pain, and trying to do things differently to avoid more pain.

I can't help but note his salary and years left on his deal match up nearly perfectly with Stephen Jackson...Harris is more of an all-around player than Jackson, who has always been a scorer.

I find the "pay what you wish" concept fascinating, and think the potential is huge, especially when used as a way for charities to raise money (which Jon Bon Jovi is using to his advantage, though many ladies (and some men) would pay $20 for a tuna sandwich if they thought there was a chance they might see Jon while picking it up).

I think we'll begin to see these all over the country, but I have to think they will do better in rural areas and smaller towns. I just think that people will pay more if they feel there's less of a chance of remaining anonymous.

By the way, I decided on fried fish (I know, but the Rambling son does not liked baked) with au gratin potatoes with bacon, and fresh French bread (well, fresh out of the freezer, they'll never know). It's actually fish that he caught when he was at his grandparent's cabin a couple weeks ago.

Sorry ladies, I'm taken.

It's so cold, I expect Al Gore to be making an appearance nearby.

IL raised taxes 67%...debt went way up.

Get used to it. When you raise taxes, people pay less; through cheating, taking questionable deductions, moving away, or just refusing to pay.

Taxpayers get mad, and have grown tired of being looked at as nothing but an open wallet. The solution? Spend less money. It's as simple as that.

I can't believe it's taken this long and we haven't heard states discuss automatic annual cuts. As I've said numerous times, the DMV would still suck if you took away 3-5% of its budget, but it would cost less...and many would mail in their payments or take care of it on the internet.

Am I the only person not surprised mechanically separated chicken is pink/red? So are steaks, and gasp, raw chicken. Know what else? Chickens are live creatures that are killed so we can eat them. They don't magically appear at the grocery store, cleaned and ready to throw in the oven.

I think it's great we utilize the entire chicken, and not let any part of it go to waste. After all, that bird gave its life so we could enjoy poultry. Native Americans were celebrated for utilizing the entire carcass. Think of the outcry if we only used the best parts, and for that matter, how expensive it would be.

Oh, and by the way, I love McNuggets, so does my son. I'm thankful for the farmer who raises the chicken, the truckers who transport them, and the factory workers who prep it, and even the retail worker who puts it on the shelf. McDonald's employs about 1M Americans, and I'm happy they can make a product so yummy out of something many turn their nose up at.

And, in closing, 90% of what they say is not true anyway, as McNuggets have been made from all white meat since 2003, though I like them more before.

Aoki--1M

That's a total of $97.91M, as of this second, no incentives or buyouts included. Considering the Crew counts the 40 man salaries as their payroll, including callups, they are well over $100M accounting wise.

This does not include the $2.5M posting fee for Aoki, which obviously has to come out of somewhere, be it payroll, scouting, amateur bonuses, etc.

Back when they started school choice, I knew nothing about it, except what one supporter said...worst case scenario, some bad schools go out of business...nothing wrong with that.

Two decades later, I still agree. We are lucky our local district offers "challenging" classes for the Rambling son, who was so bored to tears in regular 1st and 2nd grade, and the teachers were too busy with the slower and troublesome kids to be worried about the kid who was setting the curve. Without that, we'd be out looking too.

Today, I spilled a glass of water as I straightened out my blankets, as one had fallen on the floor during the chilly night. I kind of forgot about it, and when the Rambling son got home, he got the vacuum and box fan, I thought we'd clean up the Rambling dog's hair on the floor and then let the fan assist in drying the carpet.

Well, our bagless was so packed that it barely worked. I took it out on the deck, emptied it out (almost had a quilt in there), and rinsed the filters. After letting it dry per the directions, I couldn't recall how it went back together. The Rambling son took a crack at it, no luck. We left it for the Rambling wife, it's still sitting on the bathroom sink, all four pieces.

Not only am I my dad's son, my son is his grandson. Even having a handy grandpa on the other side is not enough to overcome bad genes.

ADDED: The Rambling wife just assembled it in 5.5 seconds. If there's ever a show called Not MacGyver, I have a career in show business.

(1/18/2012 03:31:00 PM) - Robert R.

Review based on a preview screening.

HAYWIRE

HAYWIRE is Steven Soderbergh's newest cinematic experiment. Soderbergh takes essentially a non-actor, Gina Carano, selected for her looks and MMA fighting ability, surrounds her with a top notch cast, and then lets her loose beating up most of the cast with all the directoral flourishes Soderbergh can reasonably fit in. The result is essentially an arty exploitation film, an oxymoron that still somehow makes sense.

Like an exploitation movie, the plot is essentially meaningless as anything other than a linkage between setpieces. Carano's character doesn't have an arc. There's no deeper themes in the text. Carano plays Mallory, a black ops contractor that's betrayed and set up to take the fall for a crime she didn't commit. First order of business is getting out of the trap. Second order of business is payback.

And that's essentially the film. Sure there are some twists and turns, but there are no deeper themes in the script. It's simply an excuse for Carano to kick ass. And kick ass she does. Basically imagine the Bourne movies without shaky cam and you have a pretty good idea of the action. And, without the shaky cam, the action scenes are truly impressive. Carano's not much of an actor, but she's an impressive physical presence and looks great in a fight. The fights, btw, have a lot of impact. I'd swear that the punch's connecting sound louder than the gunshots in the audio mix and every hit is visceral. The result is a series of some of the best fight and chase scenes Hollywood has produced in years.

While the script may not have anything to really say, Soderbergh is obviously commenting on the genre he's riffing on. Soderbergh essentially "actor proofs" the movie by giving Carano very little dialogue and nothing overly emotional. He asks her to look surprised, to look concerned, and to kick ass basically. Soderbergh then surrounds her with some of the more famous pretty boy actors on the planet in Ewan McGregor and Michael Fassbender and lets Carano kick their asses. I don't think it's reading too much to say that Soderbergh is celebrating the "action movie star" and "action director" over the "sensitive actor" in HAYWIRE. The "bad guys" number among them another famous pretty boy in Antonio Banderas and the "good guys" have among the action movie stalwart, but hardly an acclaimed actor, Bill Paxton. Soderbergh perhaps cheats that simple arrangement by having Michael Douglas somewhere in the middle. It's Douglas that gets to deliver the big speeches though, which certainly helps because Douglas is great at it.

However, I certainly can see this film not being for everyone. Carano is no better than adequate in even her best scenes when she's not in action mode which certainly is limiting. Channing Tatum isn't any better. Soderbergh is also too emotionally cool to really get the blood pumping much and the film certainly doesn't build to a cathartic climax. Also, for a short film that has lots of action, the pace lags a bit in the second half, probably because we really don't care about Carrano beyond her immediate goals. The film isn't completely satisfying as an art film and isn't completely satisfying as an exploitation film as it doesn't commit fully in either direction.

That said, the positives easily outweigh the negatives as far as I'm concerned. It delivers the thrills of an exploitation movie in a stylish manner while commenting on the genre through the filmmaking. I think this is more than a fun minor riff than a major artistic achievement, but I was certainly entertained throughout.

Xavier Nady, Jeff Keppinger, Conor Jackson, Jonny Gomes, and Marcus Thames are five guys who still might fit in, if the Crew wants to add another RH bench bat. I would think all but Keppinger and Gomes could be had on a minor league contract, at this point.

I looked at available guys a while back, but missed Thames, who is a 1B/LF who is a noted lefty destroyer. Keppinger might be waiting to see if a guy like Brian Roberts is able to play, as he's a very solid option at 2B, I doubt if there are 30 better in MLB. Gomes should at least find a platoon opportunity somewhere.

Aoki would seem to join Gomez, Izturis, and Kottaras as 4/5th's of the Brewers' bench, should the position players remain healthy. I would say the final spot screams out for a RH hitter who can play 1B/3B/OF, though that may well be easier said that done.

Did KRod accept less in arby so he could be dealt to a team looking for a closer?

Few teams do not have a closer penciled in, so I doubt it, and you would assume the Crew would insist on a solid set-up man in return, so that seems like a tough deal to make...how many teams have a solid set-up guy but are afraid to have him close?

I'm sorry, my bad. The Packers have the best defense ever.

New England might outscore the other team and win a title, but the Saints and Packers will not. Pretending the problem doesn't exist is denial, and does nothing to alleviate the problem.

That's two game changing calls by the same referee that went against the Giants, and they're still up 17. The Giants could easily have the ball up 24 with 5 minutes left without the help of a certain zebra.

In the NFL offices, I'm sure they are pleading for the Giants to hang on...

I'm surprised they didn't challenge that just because it was a turning point of the game, and they've made an obvious error earlier today.

Turnovers are the key to success in both football and basketball.

Now, the Packers are not just facing the Giants, the clock is a 12th man. I assume the Giants will sit back and dare them to make several perfect passes, and hope they get impatient.

Al,

People should not scoff at all. The NBA had a ref in a game fixing (point shaving mostly) scandal just a couple years ago, and you can bet the NFL keeps track of oddities like that. Like you said, when you mess it up after seeing it frame by frame, I mean, what the hell?

Hank

1/15/2012 04:43:00 PM

(1/15/2012 04:28:00 PM) - Al

I'm not sure how there can be any question. Scoff if you will, but that's a situation where the referee should be replaced immediately and tested/investigated by the league.

The only options are he's inept, under the influence, or on the take. Every one of them is deplorable, given the circumstance.

1/15/2012 04:28:00 PM

(1/15/2012 04:20:00 PM) - Al

Patton also had a pee-pee incident, and was cheered.

It's a PC world, even when the intent is to kill or injure the enemy. I think it's a case of the old media not really understanding what war is about...as many have said, they are more upset about this than terrorists killing our soldiers, or beheading Daniel Pearl.

I'll say it one final time, I support the troops. If they broke some rule of battle, they should be punished. That said, I support the troops, and am glad they are on my side.

(1/15/2012 01:50:00 PM) - Al

I'm shocked how so many Packers' fans seem completely oblivious to the fact they have one of the worst defenses, as far as yardage allowed, in NFL history.

It's a new day in the NFL, as many of the poor defensive (especially pass defense) teams are very successful...the rules are so skewed as to offense it's sad to many of us, but if you give up a lot of yards, on a bad day, you can give up a lot of points.

In 2006, The Washington Post revealed that Target is operating two sophisticated criminal forensics laboratories, one at its headquarters and the other in Las Vegas. Originally, the lab was created with the role of investigating internal instances of theft and fraud and other criminal actions that have occurred on its own properties. Eventually, the company began offering pro bono services to law enforcement agencies across the country. Target's Forensic Services has assisted agencies at all levels of government, including federal agencies such as the United States Secret Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The labs have become such a popular resource for law enforcement that Target has had to restrict its assistance to violent felonies.--Target Wikipedia entry

Who would have guessed that? I looked up Target to see what they were doing as the Rambling wife said they were remodeling to add more grocery space. They are switching to the PFresh concept, I guess.

More on the Marines pee-pee incident.

By the way, if you see the old media not capitalizing Marines, my bet is they are anti-military, and not a grammatical error. Politico chooses not to capitalize "marines," but to do so with "Taliban."

They might as well say they hate America.

It just crossed my mind, as I watched the NFL pre-game show...I wonder if anyone up in the Hudson, WI area has approached the Vikings about putting their new stadium just across the border in the Badger state?

I know a while ago, the Vikings tried convincing MN that the income tax on Vikings' players and their opponents would pay for a large portion of a new stadium, but the problem is, MN is already collecting that money, so it would be a diversion of funds, not a new source. In WI, however, it would be fresh money, as would all the sales taxes and hotel/restaurant taxes collected ten game weekends a year, and the user fee for all events.

Could it work? Possibly. One reason it would not is simple...rental car money, and also lots of hotel/restaurant tax would still be collected across the border in MN, and I doubt they'd have much interest in sharing. Short-term, at least, most Vikings' employees would still live in MN, but over time, many would choose to move closer to their work.

I'm sure this all came up when the Meadowlands was in the process of being built too. Sometimes it takes an out-of-the-box idea and someone to fight through the maze of negative thinking to get stuff done.

EDIT: Shakopee is late to the party, but looks to have an excellent plan in place, no public money except for user fees, no infrastructure needed, and adding a "racino" (race track/casino combo) to its entertainment options.

I was wondering if a casino could be added in Hudson, as it would also draw cash from across the border.

Bogut practicing today, has passed concussion test, should play tomorrow.

The Bucks are probably a playoff team with him and a lottery team without him.

Adam has Izturis' contract info, it includes an opt-out if not on the 40 man by the end of March. He'll either be in ML or elsewhere, he will not be seeing Nashville.

No doubt he's penciled in as the main utility infielder right now.

Detroit is proof throwing money at problems does not work.

But, like most urban areas, it's all they know, so they just keep doing it.

It's no wonder why the suburbs have boomed while cities lose population. High taxes and high crime is not a recipe for success.

Some dude in Japan thinks the Crew will sign Aoki.

I think it's up to him, a 1-2 year deal for $1.5-2M per is all I expect the Crew to offer. There may be some deal made to allow him to be a FA after contract expires as well.

I got SF, NE, BAL, and GB to win, but have DEN and NYG to cover.

3-1 on wins, 4-0 versus the spread last week.
