#93 in LF was Josh Prince, who recently converted to OF from SS. Prince's ceiling is probably that of a utility player, so having him play several spots is probably wise. He's one of those one tool (speed) guys the Crew hopes develops one or two of the others.

Scooter Gennett just made a very nice play. Concerns about his defense, as almost always is the case, are likely overrated. Errors totals in the minors are always high due to crappy fields and official scorers who are still unhappy they aren't playing.
How can you not love a 2B named Scooter? It's the baseball equivalent of disliking puppies.
My top ten list of prospects will be released some time over the next month, and Scooter will be atop the list. I think he'll be the 2B in '14 or '15 and remain there for several seasons.

Roenicke says they may go to an eleven man staff at times, but realistically, with Dillard and Parra as the bottom two guys, both without options, they likely won't unless they either give up on or DL one of them. Estrada, however, does have options remaining, so he could be a guy bounced back and forth.
That is, of course, assuming the rotation remains healthy and effective, as they were in '11.

I have a ticket in my wallet, but until I look, there's a chance I might have won, so I'm not sure if I'll ever bother.
By the way, if no one wins, the jackpot will be over $1B, likely $1.25B. That's billions...that's an unimaginable amount of money...unless you're a fiscal liberal, in which case, it's not nearly enough...for anything.

Hilarious, and true Reason video on why health insurance is so expensive.
They don't even mention how easy it is to sue for malpractice and get punitive damages. As often is the case, the real problem rhymes with shovernment.
As the brilliant John Stossel said last year a mile from my house, "Not letting insurance companies charge more for preexisting conditions is like making them charge Lindsay Lohan the same for auto insurance as me."
Eliminate punitive damages, set a high standard for legal action, and eliminating the things every policy has to pay for would probably cut health insurance costs in half. Then, have them quit paying for check-ups, $5 drugs, and $12 blood tests...that's like making an auto insurance claim every time you need to rotate your tires and change your oil...it bogs down the system and quite frankly, is so asinine, I'm almost positive Jimmy Carter came up with it.
Finally, allow everyone to add to their HSA accounts tax free to cover the cost of sane, high deductible plans...most people spend $2K a year or less on health care, except in that one "bad year" out of ten...you might get cancer, or have a heart problem, or break a bone. Heck, try finding a high deductible plan on your own...it's almost impossible, because every policy is required by law to cover spousal abuse counseling (not married, don't care) and prostate screening (you're a woman, tough luck).
You will not see a single one of these ideas enacted by the way...too busy calling cops idiots and speaking at fundraisers to pass a budget for three years, never mind enact anything involving legal reform...they're huge donors you know.

Amaury Rivas was successfully outrighted to Nashville, meaning he cleared waivers. How exactly a team felt Zelous Wheeler has a higher ceiling than Rivas, who struggled last year in AAA but had surgery after the season to fix a troublesome elbow, is a complete mystery to me.
I assumed the Orioles would outright Wheeler right away, but apparently they have not yet. Often, players on the cusp are claimed and then that team immediately tries to sneak him through. It's a brilliant move if you have 40 man roster space. You don't pick up stars, but you can fill some organizational holes and the price is so cheap ($50K), it's well worth it.

The minimum wage leads to higher costs, and slows growth.
If you're not bound to a brick and mortar location, it also leads to business leaving.
Realistically, the problem I and other capitalists have with the minimum wage is simple...if I want to take a job at night doing some filing for a neighbor, and we agree on a price of $5 an hour, the government should not stand in our way, as we have an agreement that appeals to both of us. Talk of a "living wage" is just political pandering, at no time in our nation's history has an entry-level, low skill job been able to support a family. Those that argue for a "living wage" are ignorant of history, or are trying to appeal to those struggling...or both, as was/is the case with Ted Kennedy and others.

If Jack Cust can play 1B, I'd love to have him, but I don't think there's a roster spot open.
1. Cust has never played an inning at 1B, even though he's an awful defensive OF.

I do credit the Obamacare lawyer not cracking up as he argues that mandating someone to purchase health insurance is not forcing someone to buy something.
To me, that's just doubletalk, and may I add, embarrassingly bad doubletalk. I have to wonder if this is really the best they could do. The justices, in their own stuck up way, seemed to be asking, "Are you kidding me?" by their leading questions.

I've argued this for years...the more germs you're exposed too, the fewer things make you sick.
This is why germaphobes are always sick. Keep a consistent sleeping habit, drink lots of water, and shake lots of hands. Sure you'll get colds and minor illnesses, but you won't get many long illnesses.
Pilots, police officers, firefighters, and others who work strange shifts, and bounce schedules have been shown over and over to be far more health problems that make them miss work. Your body simply is not designed for it.

This is what government does...it tries to solve a problem by eliminating the solution.
Overpaid, underworked buffoons...100% funded by the taxpayers. They should be eliminated, swiftly, with one stroke of the pen. No one would ever miss them.
To cure the problem, one must realize what government was intended to do...defend our borders, lock up criminals, teach kids how to read and write, and build roads. They keep adding more and more, spend far too much, and they suck at damn near everything, because they have no incentive to do it well.
Simply get rid of the guys who are causing problems, and the rest will learn to shut up. Start with the buffoons telling us what to pack our kids for lunch (I don't recall that in the Constitution) and make an example of the nerds trying to regulate not getting lost. Reduce every single department by 5-10% a year, and start lowering benefits by adjusting them to the average person working in corporate America...after all, people being paid by the taxpayer should never have more/better add-ons than those paying their salary.
The fact that this is not already been done shows how out of whack the system is.

One version begins with preachers in a rural county demanding the government ban the sale of alcohol on Sundays. "Alcohol", they say, "is a vile drink and efforts should be made to restrict its spread through society, especially on the Lord's Day." The Baptists' electorate votes the county dry.
But the demand for alcohol does not disappear with the supply. People still want to drink on Sundays and so the bootleggers step up and illegally sell alcohol. And because the supply is restricted because far fewer people are selling liquor, one day a week the bootlegger gains monopoly power and the lucrative market that goes with it.
The Baptists, in their turn, point to the widespread use of alcohol on Sunday as evidence that laws need to be tightened further, and propose to ban sale of alcohol on Saturday as well. This causes a spiral of tougher and tougher laws that are enforced less and less.
The more rules and regs, the less each one is enforced. The above is the description of Bootleggers and Baptists in Wikipedia. In effect, they are effectively creating the illegal demand. That's one reason you don't hear anyone selling illegal spirits in our area, you can buy plenty of cheap booze at the liquor section of your grocery or convenience store. But, if you try and "discourage" people from buying buy slapping a $10 tax on each bottle, suddenly, it's profitable to drive in a truckload bought elsewhere, or maybe for amateurs to make their own.

Suddenly, the shooting in FL is looking more and more like self-defense, or at least provoked.
If Jesse Jackson is one one side, you can usually depend on common sense being on the other. Al Sharpton shook his fist in disgust for months until the facts of Tawana Brawley's case became public, and most of us stopped taking anything he said seriously. Jackson entered that category years ago too.
It says it all when you consider the only networks that put Sharpton and Jackson on are those so desperate for ratings they're wiling to ignore the facts and go with hearsay.

It's a non-issue, and those who don't get it are utopians who think if we'd add just a few more rules and laws, the streets would be paved with gold, with everyone working toward a common goal.

I have little to say about the Martin case, except that losers like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton seem to only care that it's a black child that was shot.
The fact they feel the need to throw in that adjective in order to be unhappy about it seems to prove they are nothing but publicity seeking clowns who add nothing to an intelligent conversation. I have no respect for either, and wish the old media would quit pretending they have a clue.
That said, you get the feeling plenty of people are disgusted the killer is not a Caucasian wearing a sleeveless T-shirt that could easily be held up as an example of the angry white dude.
As always, nothing I find more amusing than hearing a bunch of students walked out of school "in protest." This is a big city school. Skipping class is not a political statement, it's a Friday tradition, which often spills over to Wednesday and Thursday.
Pretending otherwise is like the old media pretending to be shocked John Edwards was having an affair while his cancer stricken wife lie dying in the Tar Heel state. It's a perfect "I can't believe this got out after I covered it up for months...I mean, happened."

One thing no one has brought up is that 150 Brewers' games are scheduled to be on Fox Sports Wisconsin, while all 70 Bucks' games are supposed to be on FSW. For instance, on 4/13 and 4/14, both the Bucks and Brewers are scheduled to play in the evening...so, what's going to happen? Is it possible FSW will arrange for cable/satellite companies to have both on, one on an alternate channel? Would the broadcasters bother to carry them both?

Found while looking up other things:
Hawaiian race breakdown:
Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander 10.0%
two or more races: 23.6%
Excuse the fact it adds up to 107, as it's the US Census numbers, we're lucky it doesn't add up to Honolulu's zip code. I've often said that the mishmash of races will make racism more and more rare, as in 500 years, there will be very few "white," "black," and "Latino"...just various shades of tan.
That said, look how high the Asian-American population is in Hawaii. I know many first and second generation Americans have moved from Japan, I wonder if that's why that number is so high.

The Hunger Games is being promoted as a conservative friendly movie on the blogosphere, as much of the film's plot involves a post apocalyptic world where the government controls all aspects of life, made $20M last night at the midnight screenings, and is predicted to take in about $70M today and around $200M this weekend.
I guess if you're going to hitch your beliefs to a film, one that is doing mega business is a good one to start with.

Libertarians set to nominate Rupert for governor.
Gary Johnson discussed having Drew Carey as his VP for publicity reasons too. In the two party system, it's awful tough breaking through from 1% to 10%...and even when you do, you don't win anything.
I'm pretty much a social libertarian, though I would still enforce heavy penalties against selling drugs and weapons illegally, as possession and use are rarely punished now, nor will they be anytime soon. Having laws on the books involving prostitution, sports wagering, and wearing a seat belt or helmet is what has led to the pathetic nanny state, where politicians give $500M to Solyndra to burn up in the sun (see what I did there?), and pay paper pushers that come in late, leave early, and take three hour lunches to go through a 6 year-old's lunch and tell her parents they need to include some carrot sticks for the youngster to throw away.
while some of it is just ignorant, these same burdensome rules keep companies from hiring more people, creating new products, and seeking out new investors.

As I mentioned earlier in the week, I had to miss the Badgers' game live tonight, so I DVR'd it and watched it about 10:45.
They played well, shot well from 3, barely turned the ball over at all...and still lost. Syracuse simply outathleted them, hitting several tough shots and also many high degree of difficulty drives.
As Johnny Mac often points out, sometimes, you just gotta have the other team miss some shots. Other than the free throw late, it just didn't seem like Syracuse missed much of anything.
The last possession was far from perfect, but I have to note, it seems like the entire world missed the obvious...Taylor had to force up a covered three, but we've all seen him hit shots like that, The thing is, not only did Gasser miss the hurried rebound, Bruiser had the ball in his hands with 2-2.5 seconds left at the rim...and it slipped out of his hands. If he could have caught that ball and collected himself in the air, we'd be replaying that put back for all of eternity.
Hard to believe Jordan Taylor will never wear a Wisconsin uniform again. He played an awful lot of minutes in his four years, and the last three, was the undisputed leader of the team.
Always tough losing by a single point, Bergerren's phantom foul in the first half that put him on the bench was probably the key play in the game, as they struggled without his presence inside.
As always, just a pleasure watching that team play. They play hard, they play smart, and they make the other team beat them. Sadly, that's exactly what happened.

Carpooling and ridesharing are not popular for many reasons...awkward silence, forced stops, have to get up earlier, conflicting schedules, what do you do if someone has to leave early/start late due to illness, a sick child, an appointment of some sort, and so on. Or, the simple fact that, much like myself, a vast amount of people are simply antisocial and would rather do almost anything to avoid chatting with someone from whom* you cannot escape.
What's amazing is, some people are so shortsighted they do not understand why everyone does not carpool.

Adam's mailbag includes an interesting possible option instead of Izturis.
I have to wonder if Cesar is banged up, as while errors are plentiful on the non-major league caliber fields in Zona, most of his have been on throws, it seems at least. Luis Cruz can't hit a lick, but no one has ever questioned his D. Of course, no one has ever questioned Izturis' either. Small samples exist in the field as well.
EDIT: I should mention that plenty of teams, about 3-8, are in the market for a reserve infielder, especially a SS (the Twins only have their 2B backing up Jamey Carroll at SS, who will require at least a day off every other week, and I assume more often than that. Most teams will have a lower waiver position than the Crew, so barring a trade, I would still expect Izturis to go north.

No chance for Eric Farris to make the 25 man?
Nope. He can only play 2B, and hasn't hit even at AAA. I think he stands a good chance of being dropped from the 40. Good defensive 2B that can run are not a dime a dozen, but they're not a rare commodity either.
They should try to turn him into a jack-of-all-trades utility guy, because that might minimize his poor SS defense. If he could play 2B/3B/OF, that might gain him enough value to overlook the fact he's barely passable at SS. His speed may allow him to get by in the OF even though he has no experience out there.
EDIT: Farris was sent down a couple days ago, though he may appear in some games. It barely registered with me, as I had dismissed his chances of making the team weeks prior.

2012 25 man projections
BETTER CHANCE THAN ME:
IF HART NEEDS MORE TIME
To summarize, barring injury, 80% of the team was set before the team showed up in Arizona. You never know who might become available on the waiver wire or in a minor trade. They'll always look to improve. I thought Ishikawa might get a look in case Corey needed extra time, but the 40 man looks packed. Kintzler hasn't pitched at all and has plenty of options, so I do not see him going north.

I'll do the math another time, but the blanket assessment that the Crew's defense will be better is a bit simple. Yuni was a few runs below average, and Alex was mediocre or higher depending on what metric you use. Ramirez, however, has been quite bad the past two campaigns, and well below decent for half-a-decade. Fielder was limited, but he made the routine plays, so any improvement is probably going to be very slight.

Yep, those guys with plenty of options really don't have a chance on a team that uses intelligence. Poorly run teams will go with a guy who had a better spring, and release the out of options guy...and then on May 8th, will be on the phone trying to find a pitcher because they had to DL someone.
Using options is just like running clock when you're ahead in other sports. Casuals don't get it, but that's why they're casuals.
EDIT: Mark Rogers also sent down. He'll have to make the 2013 roster as he's out of options, so I hope they make him a reliever and pitch him 1-2 innings 2-3 times a week in Nashville, which is his best chance at staying healthy and will be his role in the majors anyway.

1. Agree with you on every Badger ref post you had today. Yikes, were they awful. Glad it didn't cost the better team the W.
2. My buddies and I were saying the exact same thing about playing hard. Their switches and popping out on D were top notch for most of the day. Felt that if Bucky was beat, they at least left everything out there. Weird to think this was a team that stumbled earlier in the season, but hot shooting by the opponent will do that. It's just a down year in College bball, no one seems that great.Feel like they have as good a shot as anyone with their D.
3. I am A-ok with Bucky being an underdog the rest of the way. Good matchups for them from here out.
4. Didn't watch much of Dekker, but when I did...Wow.
Hope you are doing well, and keep up the good work. I'll keep reading.
I found it funny after the game people were saying the Badgers should have been called for a foul on a rebound late. Watching the Big Ten all season, you don't see that called unless a player ends up on a cheerleader. I hate whistles, and am all for a tough, hard game, those ticky-tack calls are far too inconsistent and disrupt the flow of the game. Besides, a tough game favors the underdog, as you're not going to outjump or outathlete an elite team...but you can outtough them.
The game is far more even today than it used to be in part because of the 13 scholarship limit. I hate it because it hurts the Badgers, but there's only about 70 major schools, and they only have 2-3 free rides a year to give out. There are hundreds of fine high school seniors each year, and the major conferences only get 200 of them. So, the midmajors and smaller schools get the rest, and they end up with most of the late developers, the projects, and the guys a step slow, an inch or two too short for their position, and the 6-5 inside players. The thing is, enough of those guys improve or are good enough that the difference between the best team in the Missouri Valley and the 5th/6th best team in the major conferences is minimal.

Had my first problem price matching at Wal Mart today, as the cashier was unable to figure out how to do it, and ignored my assistance (things sold by the pound, like pork or steak, have to be done a bit "backwards"). She asked the guy who was getting change for another register, and he was rather short and rude with me, telling me I should have an ad so they can verify it...but of course, he would do it "this time" for me.
The Rambling wife and I do this "backwards," as we make our list, she prints it out, and then I spend 5-10 minutes online finding that item on sale at one of our local groceries. I don't do it with everything, but things like cereal, steak, and chicken breasts are always on sale somewhere, and in a few minutes, you can easily find $20 in savings, especially if you buy stuff for the freezer. I can't make $100 an hour any other way (hey, I'm not a young Julia Roberts), so it's an easy decision.
Wal Mart's policy is easily found on their web site, and distinctly says, "No ad is needed," as I would have to bring in several and, as their cashiers have told me others do, "Make it a big production." I just write the price down next to the item, separate the price match items from the others, and it takes them about 30 seconds.
The real irony here, as I pointed out to them when I e-mailed, is it would have been far quicker and easier to provide quality service with a smile, but he chose not to do so...yet gave me exactly what I asked for anyway, albeit in an accusing, unfriendly tone (luckily, I'm married, so I'm used to it).
That, my friends, is government worker service. Luckily, Wal Mart is a proud, capitalist company, and wants their customers treated well, and actually wants feedback.

Sam Dekker, Mr. Basketball in the state and highly touted Badgers' recruit (Bo called him "Robbie Hummell with good knees" the other day) plays for Sheboygan Lutheran at 11, Brewers on at 3, Badgers at 5:10, and Matt Thomas, an uncommitted junior who the Badgers have offered, plays at 6:30 for Onalaska in their title game.
TV geeks, unite.

More on the guy who made up his entire story about how Apple is evil...my estimate yesterday that it may have some truth in it somewhere...may have been overly optimistic.
Much like the climate change debacle, never believe anyone whose story is dependent on making oodles of money from said story. Al Gore would not have made a penny if he had told the truth...so he didn't.
