As a candidate in 2010, Scott Walker asked to be judged based on two criteria: He would eliminate the state's structural deficit and he would create 250,000 private-sector jobs in his first term.

Though we can argue about the costs of doing so, the deficit is largely eliminated. The state Legislature did not substantially increase taxes to do so. These must be counted as real accomplishments for Walker and the GOP.

As the Wausau Daily Herald Editorial Board interviewed candidates for dozens of local-government offices this spring, we heard again and again from officials who said state budget reforms allowed them to substantially hold the line on taxes without making major program cuts. That experience did bear on our decision in this recall race.--Wausau Daily Herald, in endorsing Walker

Eliminating the near monopoly the teacher's union insurance had is probably one of the greatest political accomplishments in the 21st century.  Jerry Bader mentioned this AM what this election is about...now that union members cannot have dues withdrawn, membership is down 30-70%. When people have to voluntarily give away their money, they balk...and everyone knows it.

As often mentioned, Barrett used Walker's reforms in Milwaukee aggressively, and now pretends he did not.

This is why we must have the internet...the Jenny McCarthy body count.

Oprah and the old media have plenty of blood on their hands as well, giving a busty blonde who has no medical knowledge whatsoever airtime and pretending she has any credibility at all. Those guys that look for Bigfoot between swilling incredible amounts of beer look like nuclear physicists compared to Jenny, who is just proof winners of the genetic lottery are rarely blessed twice.

Ann is live blogging the debate, which I did not know was tonight, and am giggling about to myself. I can only imagine what Barrett will fib about, and sure enough, he's still using old estimates rather than actual, confirmed job numbers. I'd be embarrassed to have a candidate using pretend data from last year in late May.

On Twitter, someone just pointed out Barrett cited FDR, who spoke numerous times against public sector unions. Talk about old, uninspired ideas full of falsehoods. I guess when the facts are not on your side and the public disagrees with why the recall is happening, you're going to look pathetic at times.

One thing the past few games seem to show is how little many roster spots matter. When you hear casuals being concerned about Tim Dillard, just disregard and move on. There are about twenty roster spots that you worry about, and five you do not...what many folks do not realize is that Cesar Izturis is one of the best reserve SS's in MLB, yet he's not that much better than AAA fodder like Maysonet...5-10 runs a year.

If your 12th pitcher is pitching anything but blowout innings, your SP's are not doing the job, and no team is going to do anything but suck without at least a mediocre rotation.

Mark A says the Brewers will look to be buyers.

He has spoken before about not feeling a total rebuild would work in Milwaukee, and Doug has avoided it as well in his time. The one obvious trade piece if the Crew falls out of contention is KRod, as non-contenders do not need a closer/setup man who makes $8M.

If this is true, he should not be impeached, he should be flown out of the country and never allowed to return.

When you don't have any respect for $1T, you don't care about a few thousand here and there either. That, times a bijillion, sums up what's wrong with our finances...Obama just figures that the rube taxpayers can pay for his haircut, because he's better than them.

And you know, the only thing they can think of is, there's nowhere left to cut, you idiots who have jobs are just going to have to pay more.

This is obviously W's fault.

I don't think I would have asked.  He'll be lucky to get in bed before 7AM, and more than 5-6 hours of sleep. Tough to be 100% throwing 110 pitches after that.

I could have sworn there was a rule against traveling two time zones east after playing a game and playing the next day...maybe it's three time zones. I know it affects the Mariners, as they rarely have a day off at home, as they always have to use several off days for travel.

This is why the Barrett campaign insists their "internal" polls show that it's a dead heat. It's not that I don't believe them, it's that I am damn near positive they are incapable of telling the truth.

Happy Birthday to the Rambling mom today, who passed away a few years ago, but, it is still her birthday. The Rambling brother reports tomorrow is the 60th anniversary of the Rambling parents' wedding.

I realize very few of you ever met the Rambling mom, but while biased, I recall one of my old neighbors and classmates saying it best at her funeral, when he said, "She sure was a nice lady. Never had a bad word to say about anyone, and never heard anyone say a bad word about her."

On a lighter note, I recall the Rambling wife and I discussing this a couple months ago. At the end of a basketball game, Bucks or Badgers I assume, a player on the visiting team fouled out, and the crowd started singing along to "Hit the road, Jack" to send him off. For whatever reason, I could suddenly hear the Rambling mom's reaction to that.

(without a hint of sarcasm, mind you) Well, THAT isn't very nice.

But the state Department of Revenue now estimates that the state will take in about $265 million more than the bureau expected, which should translate to a $275.1 million surplus on June 30, 2012, and a $154.5 million surplus on June 30, 2013, Department of Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch wrote in a letter to Walker.
Huebsch said revenue officials based the projections on larger-than-anticipated tax collections through April and revised federal Bureau of Economic Analysis forecasts showing better-than-expected personal income growth in 2011.
State law requires that if revenue exceeds initial projections, half of the surplus must be deposited in the state's rainy day fund. If Walker's projections hold, about $45.4 million would go into that fund after June 30.
That would mark the first time in state history that state officials have added to the fund in consecutive years, DOA spokeswoman Jocelyn Webster said. The Walker administration added $14.78 million at the close of the 2011 fiscal year, she said.--LaCrosse Tribune

I knew Romney had a good chance when Daily Kos insisted it was over a few weeks ago.

Whenever a biased Dem comes out that strongly when the polls are somewhat close to 50/50, it's out of fear. The idea there's no way a challenger could gain a few percent in six months, with a bad economy and Obama's approval under 50%, was so ridiculous, it reeked of overkill.

The interesting thing is, a few months ago, there were about 7-9 states that were considered swing states, and Mitt needed 5-6 of them. Now, there's about 14-15, and Mitt needs 8-10.

Lucroy out 4-6 weeks, Marty Maldonado will come up and catch most of the time, while Kottaras rehabs.

After a breakthrough offensive campaign in '11, Marty is getting out 73% of the time in AAA thus far. Much of his success last season is probably directly related to his .370 BAbip, which is unsustainable.

I see him as a solid backup, probably a .300/.375 or so. He does have some pop, as even this year, almost half of his base hits are for extra bases. He certainly has some upside, and everything I've read has him as a plus defender, especially his throwing arm. He's thrown out 42% of basestealers in his career, while Yadi Molina is at 44% in the majors.

I said Obama's policies would lead to a slow growing economy, followed by another downturn. Sometimes, I wish I was wrong.

Reagan slashed the highest tax rate from 70% down to 35% (or so, I'm not going to look it up), and it basically led to 25 years of growth, with minor blips here and there. Fail to learn from history? Not much I can do.

A blogger at The Right Sphere, who noted he is a veteran, wrote that he “can’t quite bring myself to be angry about it.”

“I feel sorry for Chris Hayes because sadly, this is his worldview. It’s how he thinks. It’s his value system, and it’s sad. This is a man who over and over again has spoken with greater reverence about the ‘Occupy Movement’ than he did today about our fallen service members,” Tommy wrote.

Hopefully, everyone is having a fine Memorial Day weekend. Mine didn't begin until 5:10 or so yesterday, but many are working today and tomorrow, so I cannot complain. We went out to breakfast and stopped at Target for a couple things. The Rambling son and I threw our new frisbee around the back yard for a while upon getting home. Our old one broke when it hit the deck last time a week ago or so...lesson learned, do not leave outside all winter, the cold makes plastic very brittle.

I just looked up Memorial Day, as I do not recall it being thought of as a military holiday when I was young. While it was began as a way to memorialize those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms, many have used it to put flowers on graves. Many feel this has become moreso since 1972, when it became the final Monday in May, as the long weekend has created more of a party atmosphere; cookouts, get togethers, and the like. Since many folks do not have any family who perished while serving, the discussion often is about relatives who have passed away. In fact, a bill has been introduced every year since '87 to change it back to May 30th, and in doing so, hopefully make it a day we remember those who died while fighting for the finest nation in the history of the planet. It never even gets to a vote, nor will it.

I have often said the true heroes are those who come home in a flag draped coffin. They are the reason we have the freedom to spend the first unofficial weekend of summer cooking out (the Rambling wife bought cheddar bratwurst patties yesterday, I gained 3 pounds looking at the box). Thanks to them, and for all the veterans who served.

Adam Jones even seems to realize BAL is overpaying.

He's being paid for 40 games, even though he has half-a-decade of experience. He's 26, so a minor improvement might be expected, but he's not going to keep this pace up. He's getting a Ryan Braun contract and he's a Corey Hart...solid, but more of a complementary player.

He is a valuable cog, especially if he is able to play CF. Just not that valuable.

Hi Al,

I was at the game last night and I have to say it was very frustrating.  You can't win a game when you let the lead-off batter on base for 5 straight innings. I thought I picked the best game of the series with Greinke pitching.  Watching his body language, it looked like he didn't want to be there at all. We live in Phoenix and get one Brewer game per year, that was not a fun one watch. However, I would say 15% of the crowd were fellow Crew fans. Great blog by the way, huge fan.

-Joe

You knew Greinke was in trouble from the moment he took the mound. Wasn't backing up throws, and so on. Zack is very talented, and he has many apologists every time he has a terrible performance, they oddly will blame those of us who truthfully analyze his outing as "crappy" and say we're picking on his medical condition...which, if it effects his pitching, should be picked on.

As I said last night, when you have a guy who has openly discussed not bothering to give a max effort in the past, and he appears "out of it," that's a bad sign.

Thank you for the kind words, Joe, I'm glad you enjoy it.

If McClendon was just supposed to be up for a few days and then be sent down when Tuesday's SP is brought up, Mike just made that a very tough decision.

He's never going to be shutdown guy, but he'll give you innings and a 3.50-4 ERA.

5/26/2012 11:15:00 PM

(5/26/2012 10:37:00 PM) - Al

Whenever you see Greinke struggle, it'd hard not to harken back to his Royals' days, when he admitted not giving much of an effort when his team was struggling, even though he was making several million dollars. Add that to his overall weirdness, his anxiety disorder, and his tendency to have blow-up starts despite excellent stuff, and you'll see why several teams will have no interest in him.

Depending on your point of view, that might make him a "bargain" or a risk.

5/26/2012 10:37:00 PM

(5/26/2012 10:27:00 PM) - Al

Marathon rant time... Ok, I've done over 65 different marathons now, in all ranges of heat, cold, wind, Nor'easters, and snow/ice storms, and can say with absolute certainty that if a race provides sufficient water and ice, a marathoner can safely finish a marathon in 90 plus degree heat. The fact is, that during the last hot marathon in Madison, the half marathoners had a greater med-tent rate. It is one thing to "cancel" it during, so at least people have a shot to finish the marathon unofficially, but quite another to cancel it two days out. They are apparently assuming that their marathoners will be undertrained, ignorant and hyper-competitive. Poor form, Madisonfestivals.com. I'm ashamed of my home-town marathon. Boo.--Facebook friend

They don't seem to realize that socialism only works if most everyone lives in squalor. It does make everyone equal (except the party elite), as it turns all into have-nots.

Fiers is scheduled to start tomorrow night. If he starts, he'd be set up to pitch again next Tuesday...when Estrada's turn would be.

If it is him, he will probably only go a few innings. If he gets pulled after 3-5 frames, he'll likely be the guy. Of course, if that's the case, they will probably bring up a reliever like McClendon for a few games, as it's just a way of maximizing their 25 man roster.

They should know Estrada's situation by tomorrow afternoon, and Nashville is in Vegas...a short flight from Arizona, where the Crew plays this weekend.

5/23/2012 08:46:00 PM

(5/23/2012 08:28:00 PM) - Al

Estrada's injury does not appear to be minor.

Fiers and Peralta have to be the favorites to come up, though Parra was mentioned as well. Manny has never had much success as a SP, but in theory, could be effective in that role. At the very least, Roenicke said they would need someone to "back up" Parra if they did go with him, as it is unlikely he would go more than 2-3 innings.

EDIT: Peralta followed up a horrible start with a poor one last night. You have to believe Fiers will get the call, whether they need a SP or a stretched out reliever.

Ransom is one of those "improve the roster" type moves that, in theory, barely makes a difference if you look at the math. However, he might hit a HR to win a game, and that's all they're hoping for. Also, on a minor note, Maysonet has never really played 3B, so they'd move Izturis over to 3B and play Edwin at SS, which weakened them at SS too.

The bar is set very low at C and SS, so if you can catch the ball and have any sort of offense, you can make a fine living.

5/23/2012 07:35:00 PM

(5/23/2012 07:24:00 PM) - Al

Ransom only has 381 career innings at SS in the majors, and his UZR is -0.9, so he should not a disaster there.

5/23/2012 07:24:00 PM

(5/23/2012 07:17:00 PM) - Al

Brewers claim Cody Ransom from ARI. He's 36, and a decent hitter, but while he has played SS in the past, he has barely played there in the past five years, so it's safe to say his range will likely be below average.

Maysonet goes down to make room for him. Not sure if there's a 40 man move or not.

Cody is a RH hitter, and has career numbers of .310/.409, meaning it's a good thing he can play 2B/SS/3B (or catch), or he'd have been done years ago.

Brewers' starters have a 2.82 ERA over the last 13 games (79.2ip, 25er) with 10 quality starts, including 3 in a row.--Brewers

The SP has come around nicely, but despite over six innings a start, the bullpen is still wearing down, in part due to the extra inning games. I've long been a proponent of having a fella capable of going 3-4 frames, especially for use in a 7-2 game, when the SP has to be removed due to high pitch count or if they're needed to be PH for. Estrada has filled that role in the past, though he was rarely utilized for a long stretch like that.

You can't help but wonder if Loe pitching a meaningless 9th yesterday after that ill timed, asinine ejection by an umpire who doesn't understand the most obvious nuances of the game...and like they all do, think they are bigger than the game, may have kept him from working tonight, forcing Juan Perez to pitch to a RH, and working his third game in a row.

They may be forced to call up a pitcher just to have some fresh arms in the bullpen tomorrow, as you would think Veras, Parra, and Perez are unavailable. I'm the first to admit, Perez is pure roster filler, he's a 30+ loogy, though he does throw hard.

And don't forget, they complained about having to take care of the infrastructure, despite the fact they were given a brand new arena.

I'll believe it when the dirt starts to move.

I can't believe they got $1M a year in naming rights either. Miller is getting a huge bargain from the Crew only paying $2.1M, as it should be at least 3 times more, and probably more than that. As I said at the time, Miller got incredible value out of the construction accident and the media mentions that came with it...they had not even started paying for it then.

We've had that for ages, and I've only watched a couple things on it, because it's always been downstairs, in the family room. The Rambling wife says since she usually watches shows on the DVR, she never watches anything on it, so I might as well take it. The Rambling son can watch Netflix on his Wii, so he doesn't use it either. I have seen every Criminal Minds and SVU episode a few times, so variety is a good thing.

Scott sends in this puff piece by a Occupy dweeb who answers her own questions...she says most are unemployed, but then says later they wish they could sit in a cubicle to help make someone else rich.

Attitudes like that get weeded out through the interview process. Druggies who have no desire/incentive to work, especially in a job involving menial labor, have never been active in the job force, because they don't make good employees. This isn't any different now than it ever was, there's just more of them now, as the financial aid is so mind-boggingly easy to get. After being paid to party through college, which is now socially accepted to take up to six years, getting up and going to work five days a week (and heavens, maybe not even Mon-Fri!) is mighty tough.

There's an entitlement issue here, as habits of expecting to be paid for nothing is a tough one to overcome, especially when the alternative is free health insurance until you're 26 and your parents/grandparents/boyfriend/girlfriend/the system is taking care of you.

This is why extended unemployment benefits have been shown over and over to increase the length of unemployment.

Any chance the Brewers' runs scored numbers are awfully skewed/misleading because they seem to score 8+ runs one game and 1 run for the next 5?

Kevin

Kevin's using selective memory here.

Their problem is they allow far more runs than they score...most all teams finish within 1-3 wins of where they "should." Last year, the Crew won six more than they "should have"...I think it was mostly due to good fortune and outstanding late inning relief, not just from Axford and KRod, but Loe, Saito, and Hawkins.

Most teams that have success and win 95+ also have a winning record in close games...but their lesser percentage (win 58% overall, 54% of 1-2 run games, and 60% of 1-2 run games) indicates close games often come down to luck or a fortuitous break. Good teams tend to be lucky as well...today's team has hit the ball hard, but also had a number of bloopers fall in.

Winning teams win 10-8, 2-1, and 13-3. They also lose 12-1 less often. All those things add up to run differential. With 160 runs versus 201, they should have 16 victories...guess how many they have?

If you want to lose an argument, argue against math.

Both at AAA Nashville. Neither is a prospect, both veteran journeymen.

Of course, some guys find something that "clicks" late, so you never know. Lowe, however, has a 1-1 BB/K ratio and only 3.5 K/9, so his success is going to be short-lived.

I admit, I have a tough time telling people to quit walking and running because it's a bit muggy compared to usual.

I truly doubt if a single settler would have made it past the Mississippi  if we tried to go west today. Too dangerous folks, back to the old country. Make sure you're wearing your lifejacket, the voyage takes months.

The temperature was 70 degrees with 63 percent humidity at start time, warmed to 74 an hour later, and reached 80 by 9 a.m. That forecast was markedly different from last year’s race weather, when temperatures were cool but high winds posed challenges for runners.

Somewhere in Africa, there are tribes that call 80 degrees a respite from the heat.

Oh, and hundreds of participants ignored officials and kept on running and walking. I'm wondering how they can allow this baseball game I'm watching to take place, given the weather.

(5/20/2012 12:47:00 PM) - Al

Rumors already online about the Brewers' FA to be SP's, Greinke and Marcum (and maybe Wolf, depending on how the Crew feels about his '13 option), being a huge part of the trading deadline moves. Mark A has discussed he doubts whether or not they could ever do a complete "sell-off," as their 3M fans do not expect to see that.

That said, if the Brewers continue on with their current pace, they would be about 44-64 at the end of July...and well into looking at 2013. Realistically, they will go into the offseason with several spots open...1B/SS/CF/SP/SP...not to mention key bullpen spots. We can hope Fiers and Peralta will be ready (I think both will be at least as good as Narveson/Estrada right away, but that's just me), but we have no idea, and plus, they're one pitch away from serious injury, like all pitchers.

Right now, our best hope is that the Crew can start scoring more runs, and/or start preventing more from being scored. The pitching is more likely to work its way back, as their May numbers show. Weeks, Ramirez, Morgan, and even Izturis can be expected to improve, while Lucroy, Hart, Braun, and Ishikawa are at or above their expected production.

The pitching is tougher to quantify, as Wolf is the SP who can actually be expected to get better...Yo slightly, but not much more than good fortune. KRod and Axford have terrible numbers overall, and hopefully will return to their "norm." Veras has also struggled, but has always had results which seem "off" considering his stuff. Loe and Parra have pitched fine, as has Dillard. McClendon and Chulk were both used to eat innings and save the rest of the bullpen, and predictably struggled. Mike has pitched poorly in AAA upon his return as well.

As for defense, it has been worse than last year, as I predicted. However, while UZR measures them as 6 runs below average, 5 of those are Weeks, which make me question Rickie's overall health, as his fielding was poor upon his return as well. I do not know if Rickie is healthy or not, but did notice early in the season he was not altering his stride to hit 1B with his "good foot"...but seemed to do again the other day. \

I recall reading in a fantasy guide a couple seasons ago that almost every vast decline in production, not related to normal aging, could be traced to an injury of some relevance. While it might be wishful thinking of sorts to hope his all-around troubles are to blame on playing in pain, it makes sense too. That said, he's also been hitting in bad luck thus far, and that tends to balance out. If his BAbip were to rise to the league average of .300ish, his overall numbers would be far easier to live with, as his OBP would be near his regular level.

I may be the only one using math to show the problem, but as Doug says, it's all about run differential. Most folks are overreacting about the scoring, as most of us expected a 5% dropoff or so because we knew Prince would be missed. However, no way they can give up over 5 runs a game and expect to have success.

45% of union households plan to vote for Walker, 50% plan to vote for Barrett.
MU Poll: On collective bargaining, 53.4% of independents say keep Walker reforms, 38.5% say restore prior law. Plus 15% issue for Walker.--Scott Manley

Let those numbers sink in, and you'll understand why Walker is ahead.

EDIT: I'm closing this in my mind, though you can still vote if you haven't. 40% agreed with me, and 33% thinks she looks better skinny as a rail, and are wrong.

Hey, it is my blog.

The rest thinks she looks equally appealing in both pics, which means:

A. You're lying.

B. You're really dull.

An e-mailer did point out he liked her revealing outfit on the left, but likes her slighter build on the right.

Thanks for voting.

Original post: I realize I'm a contrarian, but I much prefer the curvy, heavier version of Shawn Johnson on the left to her frail look now.

It might be time for a poll.

What picture of Shawn Johnson looks more attractive?

Umpires who stare down players should be shot.--Miller Park Drunk

They are simply awful, and seem to think they are above the game.

When you have no fear of losing your job, your performance is going to be terrible. Unions prove this every single day. For some reason, some insist on ignoring this nugget of fact. So be it.

WI now considered a toss-up in the presidential race.

I knew good things were going to happen when the Daily Kos said a month ago that Obama had reelection sewn up. Those types of biased sites don't report the news, they try and make the news.

It was the first of many signs of desperation.

Republicans more likely to vote in recall.

Never underestimate how unhappy people get when one side acts rudely.

Quietly, they are a ticked off giant. The other day, I happened to witness a very quiet, softspoken gent start screaming as he disgustedly talked about the Dems who went to IL to try and "beat the system," and then complained when they missed the vote.Even though the old media never quite got around to saying that, people noticed.

Trust me, that type of stupidity and hypocrisy does not play well among those who work hard and pay taxes.

Walker's approval at 50%, Obama's at 45% in that poll. That makes sense, as WI's economy is in far better shape.

ADDED: As many are pointing out, now is not the time to get cocky. Fight like a girl, and punch back twice as hard. This is not just an election, it's a way of life.

Life would continue even if the Dems win, but WI wants no part of higher property taxes (already far too high) and IL like deficits.

I mentioned this yesterday. The DNC apparently does not feel the contest is in doubt.

The GOP cannot get overconfident, but it's a good sign.

Ann talked about how many Walker signs her and Meade see on their walks. I have yet to see a Barrett sign, and see dozens of Walker ones each day, including many yards with multiple Walker placards.

Brewers are 7th in ERA the past week, and 10th in May.

Still 15th for the season, and using a smaller sample to disprove a bigger one is mathematical insanity. That said, it does appear the tide has turned. Their above ERA's are 3.68 and 3.70...and 5.12 in April. They're giving up 1.5 runs a game less, and that will likely lead to a lot of victories if it continues.

I love the fact that all the casual fans insisted that Taylor Green be inserted at 1B every day, even though, as I pointed out, Ishikawa has decent numbers, especially if platooned, and is a far superior glove man. Travis is not going to hit like Prince, and probably a bit below Mat even, but he certainly has value.

I feel good saying Izturis will be fine at SS because they are sure he will not. Very few SS's hit at all, and Cesar at least has a decent OBP.

Look how CA is spending their high speed rail money.

Wisely, Governor Walker knew it was fiscally unwise, so he turned it down. Giving someone $50K and telling them you have to buy a $300K house is not the same as getting $50K. CA is clueless as to their budget, and so is DC.

Your ox will be gored.

Recalls over selfishness set a terrible example. Not to mention, the fiscal abyss that would accompany a Walker defeat.

As I have often said, time spent vandalizing property and cursing out 12 year-olds would be far better spent working at the grass roots level. That's exactly what the tea party has done, and if you'll notice, DC is far more conservative than it used to be.

Went to Best Buy to buy a dishwasher, and because of a pushy sales guy, walked out with a laptop.

As the Rambling wife said, our dishwasher is 12 years old, and still functions, though it is very loud and struggles to clean anything but water glasses and plates that have been licked clean by the Rambling dog...and a new one would be a vast improvement over that. Listening to him say that selection would be shortsighted, at best, is frustrating.

Twitter is abuzz with people offended that the administration "hijacked" Mother's Day to promote a health care proposal that will literally do nothing it has promised, and, oh by the way, no one has even the remotest idea of how to pay for (nor cares about that nugget of fact), several years later.

They seem to know how to cater to their base, but are clueless how to attract undecided and independents. Of course, when the record is what it is, I suppose that's going to be a problem regardless. That said, if they think using fondness for mom to sell something the majority hates is going to do anything but irritate like the proverbial pebble in your shoe, good luck with that.

Read Maher's explanation, shake your head, and read Norquist's...Grover, despite his muppet-like name, makes oodles more sense.

Companies, large and small, are nor reinvesting because they know the current administration despises them and their blatant capitalism, and will look to raise their taxes at every opportunity. Obama himself said that's why the Bush tax cuts had to be extended...right before he called for higher taxes, because they do not have a spiral notebook of current positions. .

FYI, the USA corporate tax rate is the highest in the world...and that's not taking into account that dividends are taxed twice. But no, the problem is elsewhere...it always is.

Heck, I still blame W. Let's not forget how the economy was sputtering along with what would now be considered higher than full employment.

Yo was going to go to left, Braunie was going to short and Izzy to second," Roenicke said, referring to left fielder Ryan Braun and shortstop Cesar Izturis.--MLB.com

Had Weeks had to leave the game Friday night.

That wouldn't have been pretty, except for those who own Braun in fantasy leagues in which one game played defensively makes you eligible for that position the rest of the season.

The Rambling son's computer gave out a few weeks ago, and has been at a friend's house getting worked on in his spare time ever since. He's been using my old work laptop, which would not connect to the internet this morning until "IT mom" restarted the modem, rebooted the computer, and patted her head while rubbing her tummy. The Rambling wife's computer, despite attempting to reboot, will not "start up."

Luckily, my laptop is working fine, so I find this discussion both boring and none of my concern.

Hi Al,

Still love the blog, even after all these years.

So I stop at the downtown Milwaukee post office to drop off mail after work a few times a week (it's open later than the rest). They have this glass display case in the lobby showcasing their various boxes, envelopes and other supplies that you can buy from them. One time when I walked past the case I noticed that two of the boxes had tipped forward and were leaning against the glass. This was before Christmas and they are STILL like that. I wonder how many post office employees walk past that case everyday, and yet not one of them will stop to fix it.

Keep up the good work.

Ben

Thanks for the kind words Ben.

And you wouldn't have time to fix it either if you spent your day counting your huge pension that the taxpayers have funded because you do work at a fraction of the efficiency of Fed Ex.

What's so sad is, everyone knows the post office is laughably bad, and yet, people defend it like their eldest child...what, close down branches hardly anyone uses? But what about the elderly and disabled? Of course, in reality, if the elderly and disabled used it with any regularity, their numbers would not be so pathetic. And, at the risk of using common sense...who the hell uses the post office? I haven't been in one in five years other than to buy stamps, so a simple vending machine at Wal Mart would solve my needs.

I don't for a second think Romney is pulling away.

I do, however, think Obama's support is, at best, tepid. Incumbents are difficult to beat, but incumbents that preside over bad economies (Carter, Bush I) have proven to have targets on their backs (insert your own crosshairs joke here, take a pharmaceutical you nanny staters).

November is several months away, and polls will bounce in the meantime. However, my initial thought that the gay marriage "redo" was one of desperation is looking accurate. Many have said it was a play for cash, and I can't disagree.

As usual, however, I think they misread middle America...while many are like me and agnostic on the issue, very few moderates and independents are nearly as far left on the issue as the president is perceived as being...though in reality, his "endorsement" was weak...no legislation suggested, basically said it's up to the states.

I expect a couple more "adjustments" before the convention. One thing that has not been talked about much is the black community, on the whole, is far more anti-gay marriage (and anti-gay in general) than other ethnic groups. While no one thinks Obama won't receive a vast majority of the black vote again, this contrast could cause many to stay home. That has to be a huge concern to the prez's campaign.

If memory serves, I think 79% of JS readers said they should move Hart to 1B. As I said then, I don't think Aoki projects any better than Ishikawa. Small sample return this far...I'm right.

Never mind Hart would be unlikely to be very good on D at 1B, and Aoki can't throw even remotely good enough to be a RF every day.

We can hope.

I really like Tim Dillard in his "up by so many runs, we can put Dillard in" role. And, as I have pointed out until I'm blue in the face, he is very good versus RH's, and even moreso, historically bad versus LH's.

Nice to see my former employer receiving mention for the worst customer service in retail.

I can promise you that corporate is shocked...shocked by this occurrence, even though it's been taking place for the past decade. The only worse corporate I ever worked for was the party store in the Twin Cities where almost everyone at the office was related to the founder of the company. They went bankrupt a few months after I left, and I still recall chuckling at the huge errors they would make consistently. Right before I left, I found out the "inventory control manager" was the idiot son-in-law...I had been cleaning up his messes for 18 months. One of my biggest regrets is not blasting him by name in my exit interview.
