He's called two strike threes since on pitches Marty moved several inches, admitting they weren't strikes.

Could they possibly be any worse?

The umps just get worse, and worse, and worse.

How dare you question a call I obviously missed?

They don't seem to understand they just brought attention to how pathetic and inept they are.

Comics know if they go after Obama, they'll never see Leno's, Letterman's, or Kimmel's stages, and especially not HBO's or Comedy Central's.

Chris Titus said he'd assassinate Sarah Palin if she was elected. Titus would be in prison if he had said that about any of the Obama family.

1. Spiral notebook.

2. It's hard to keep it straight when you stand for nothing, and do nothing except play politics...every single day, every single decision.

In many ways, Carter must be unhappy they compare this to his time in office...

Carlos Lee is still a professional hitter, and he gets on base. Any contender should be happy to have him at LF/DH/1B.

(7/31/2012 11:30:00 AM) - Al

Only rumor involving the Brewers have them interested in a catcher, Kelly Shoppach.

This could mean they've always liked Shoppach (they have been), or they want Maldonado to play everyday in AAA, or it could mean they have a team asking about Lucroy or Maldonado.

That seems like more of an offseason move, but the Crew probably has two of the top fifteen catchers in the game, and many, including myself, may feel Marty will not hit like he did again.

Poker Stars buys Full Tilt, settles with Nanny State Justice Department, who will now spend all their taxpayer funded resources shutting down children's lemonade stands.

Never been prouder to have played the majority of my online poker at Stars, who has shown what it is like to do the right thing and take care of their customer base.

I have forgotten how much I had at Tilt...it's between a value meal and a couple tanks of gas, but at this point, it is found money.

We've been stocking up on beef roasts the past week, as our local grocery has had them on sale (and, of course, Wal Mart price matches anything).

The have acquired OF Travis Snider from the in exchange for RHP Brad Lincoln.--Pirates

Strange team with two teams trying to get better and contend. Puzzling though that PIT thinks they can get better by picking up a platoon corner OF who gets out 70% of the time while dealing a decent arm.

(7/30/2012 10:46:00 PM) - Al

Astros rooting with their hearts, runner looked out and was out. Incredible play by Izturis. Loe unlucky, while he gave up a walk, gets a DP ball, the infield was just not at DP position in the shift.

Cesar, Cody, and Nyjer could all really help teams, as could Kam and Randy. I doubt any of them get a single call.

Al,

I run my own business, and finally had to stop taking checks, as 20% of them were bad, many were "account closed" or "payment stopped on check," obvious fraud by bastards who already had the work done and now just screwed me over. I'll happily give the banks their 5% if it means not having to chase people around.

I lost about $15K last year to this, and only made about $5K, and no, I did not pay myself.

Just a bonus note, I pay about $25K to insure and bond myself, a 14 year plumber who has never had a single claim. No, we don't need legal reform, not at all.

By the way, Jason, you are capitalist, elitist scum...according to one of the two major parties.

Thanks for writing, and good luck to you.

The Rambling son and I are going to a small town "cinema cafe" tomorrow for a Hunger Games matinee...I just remembered tonight that I did not think they took credit...I called and sure enough, the guy proudly said they are "cash only."

Welcome to 1977.

I get it, plastic takes a cut (39 cents to $1.50 per swipe, plus up to 5% of the total), but it's been shown numerous times people spend more and you attract more folks (those without cash) if you accept cards.

It's a shortsighted way to do business. However, they have the right to be shortsighted, as I'm for freedom and less regulation.

Soto and Johnson saying goodbye to teammates in Cubs' dugout. No word yet on who they were traded to.

I recall earlier this season, a message board had people laughing at how bad Reed Johnson was. Of course, not only is he a lefty killer, he's a very good option as a 4th/5th OF. Another much maligned veteran OF, Mark Kotsay, teamed with Johnson, would probably be an above average platoon, if they could stay healthy all season.

EDIT: Two different trades, per reports.

I find it hilarious that the powers that be have to overrule the worst 25-33% of the official scorer's calls at Miller Park because they're so hideous, they just can't tolerate it.

Overbay DFA'd despite very good numbers.

I'm not sure what ARI is thinking, first Ransom, and now Overbay. Lyle will be sought after by at least ten teams, so they should get something for him, but they're on the fringes of contention. Who wouldn't want a cheap, solid LH bat making a pro-rated $1M?

(7/30/2012 04:55:00 PM) - Al

In other news, left-handed reliever Manny Parra is unable to pitch because of irritation in his shoulder. Roenicke said he wasn't sure when that happened or why but it's why Parra did not pitch in the four-game Washington series.--JS

As I guessed. They'll probably give him another day or so to see how it responds to "treatment," and then make a move.

I would say he told them after his crappy outings in Philly. This time of year, most every pitcher is banged up, so pitching with pain is par for the course. They only admit it when they are all but unable to pitch.  That's why Yo got nine days between starts, and why they skipped Greinke...it often helps them immensely.

I gotta agree with Liz. I'm not sure what exactly Dick meant, as McCain was well behind in the polls when he named Palin as his nominee, and actually took a short-lived lead shortly after the convention. McCain did not excite the base of the party, especially those in the South, and many stayed home, rather than just vote for what they perceived as the lesser of two evils.

Allow me to say I told you so, by the way. Often times, the lesser of two evils is a better reason to vote than any other...for proof positive, I give you 3.5 years of Obamanomics.

Braun has been dealing with some deep blisters on his hand for some time now. Got to the point yesterday where he needed a treatment day.--Adam, MLB.com

This is puzzling...I'd think they could easily treat this with just a couple days off and antibiotics and some sort of skin cream...though maybe it would be difficult to eliminate playing every day

McClung says in a text that he wants to continue playing professional baseball. Will seek a spot with another club--Adam, MLB.com

Seth should go home and work on getting in better shape and practice a knuckleball, while trying to find a team to play for in winterball. He might well find a job in AA/AAA just as an extra arm, as many guys go down this time of year, but I doubt it will help him.

OF Brock Kjeldgaard cleared waivers; no longer on the 40-man, he at least received a bump back up to AA Huntsville from Brevard.--Jim Goulart (Mass Haas on Twitter)

I know one clown had Brock as the top prospect in the system after last year. Every single team turned him down for free, or nearly free. He's got power, so he's got a tiny chance.

(7/30/2012 04:24:00 PM) - Al

Braun out tonight with blisters on his hand, and Parra out with shoulder irritation.

As I said earlier, I think Manny's been hurt for a while, and likely has already received treatment, maybe a cortisone shot, as he hasn't pitched for several days.

Very odd for a position player to have blisters as well. Too much BP or work under the stands? Possibly from weight work?

Best part about going to the dentist for a cleaning?

Allowing yourself to believe the 25 year-old hygienist and the 30ish year-old dentist actually like you for more than the fact you're paying their rent.

Seth McClung released from AAA Nashville, Thornburg will take his spot, per Adam of MLB.com.

Seth had a 5.50+ ERA last I looked, so he might well be done. Even moreso, he only had about 6 K's per 9 IP, and needless to say, it's tough being successful hitting that many bats.

7/30/2012 04:16:00 PM

(7/30/2012 02:29:00 PM) - Al

Delfino has a ton of intangibles, you'd think top teams would love him as a reserve.

I think he'd be a perfect fit for the Heat, backing up Wade and James, playing defense and shooting threes.

7/30/2012 02:29:00 PM

(7/30/2012 02:24:00 PM) - Al

McClendon returns.

I assume Peralta will continue to pitch every 5th day and they want to get an idea about DLS's mechanics in AAA first.

I wonder if the 8th and 9th might belong to Henderson and Hernandez in some form, if they have the lead. Also, if Parra is even available, as I don't think he's warmed up since they got back to MIL. Veras and Axford both threw a ton of pitches, and KRod will be limited to unimportant innings for a while.

On the bright side, the bullpen is the easiest thing to fix.

I, for one, am shocked.

I have no doubt the president would blow up an infinite amount of puppies if it meant a single swing state going his way. He stands for nothing except politics as usual, and his results show it. My goodness, his entire fiscal plan reads, "Let the next guy fix it."

(7/30/2012 01:55:00 PM) - Al

Bullpen coach Stan Kyles let go, in what I would call a "can't hurt anything" situation. Stan has been with the organization eleven years, and will likely still be if he wants to be.

As Doug said when he let Macha go, they didn't win enough games. That pretty much sums up the world of coaching...it's good to be a friend of the manager and/or to be on a winning team.

I did not give Kyles credit last season, when they had five excellent relievers, nor did I blame him this year, when they really don't have any, though three are the same guys. I have heard good things about Lee Tunnell, who will replace him (trying to recall if Lee was one of the guys, along with now AAA pitching coach Fred Dabney, who "found" 5 mph on Axford's fastball when he was in high A ball by changing his delivery), but I would think any improvement will mostly come from the pitchers themselves.

The NY Times writes about the doctor shortage...that's the very liberal NY Times.

The problem can be helped immensely by physician assistants and those "fast clinics" you find in grocery stores and the like. Last year, when I had lyme disease, I was treated quickly and in about an hour total...the exact same time it takes to get antibiotics for strep throat and ear infections. That's what bogs down the system, the fact we treat simple ailments like they're something more than that.

Willie Bloomquist, Brendan Ryan and Ty Wigginton are thought to be on the Yankees' long list of potential infield options, Heyman reports. Yunel Escobar, Chone Figgins, Jose Lopez and Cody Ransom are also thought to be on New York's list.--MLBTR

Cody can play all four infield spots, and has far more pop than most anyone available who can play the middle infield spots. A live arm should be all it takes, as we all know MIL is building toward '13 and beyond.

(7/29/2012 05:05:00 PM) - Al

I wonder who the Crew has left in the bullpen. Parra has not warmed up in days, and Thornburg is probably not going to pitch either. That would only leave Loe, methinks.

7/29/2012 05:05:00 PM

(7/29/2012 03:33:00 PM) - Al

Last week, the Rambling son and I made it across town to Fleet Farm to buy some menthol based horse liniment...it's triple the strength of Absorbine Jr, and while AJ costs $4 for 2 ounces, the equine version is $7 for 16 ounces...yes, really. I use it on my feet, as my high arches often cause pain at the end of the day, and as I also have dry, itchy feet, the cooling feeling of the menthol (and the increased circulation that follows) helps that as well. I've been soaking my feet of late to try and take care of a hard corn on the ball of my foot, which shrinks the more you soak it, which makes the pain lessen.

{I'm like a podiatrist's dream come true, aren't I?}

Today, I added the menthol liquid to my foot soak, and at the moment, my feet feel better than they have in ages, smooth, cool, and pain free. I've read that the best treatment for corns is to soak them three times a day, and while it's easy to say I do not have the time for that, I guess you make time for what's important.

Umpiring crew with a rare hat trick...they got every single call and judgement wrong on the bunt and what followed.

Thank goodness they have union protection, or they'd be unemployed. Remember, unions do not protect the best, as they do not need any help...only the worst.

That's why they're all but extinct.

(7/29/2012 01:23:00 PM) - Al

It's tough not to pencil in an out-of-options Mark Rogers onto the '13 staff somewhere...he hit 98 in the first inning and has plus off-speed stuff as well.

He may never stay healthy, but he'd be claimed by half the teams in MLB if he was put on waivers.

7/29/2012 01:23:00 PM

(7/29/2012 01:10:00 PM) - Al

DLS goes to Nashville for now, Roenicke also says MIL would like to use Wily Peralta in the rotation before the season ends.

The wave of young pitching has hit, let's hope they stay healthy and have success.

I assume we might see some other bumps in the minors among the higher ceiling arms.

7/29/2012 12:49:00 PM

(7/29/2012 12:41:00 PM) - Al

Marcum to the 60 day DL.

On the bright side, this might allow Shawn to return to MIL in '13 on a 1y/4M contract, or something along those lines, as he looks to prove his health and earn a long-term deal for '14 and beyond.

If the '13 season began tomorrow:

1. It would freak out a lot of people.

2. The rotation would probably be Gallardo, Fiers, Estrada, Thornburg, and Peralta, with Narveson hoping to return in June/July.

3. Al Gore would blame it on the industrial revolution, as his local utility is forced to build a supplemental plant just for his mansion's electric use.

7/29/2012 12:41:00 PM

(7/29/2012 10:35:00 AM) - Al

Contrary to a report Saturday, the Brewers have never discussed returning left-hander Manny Parra to the starting rotation, Melvin said--Adam, MLB.com

While Parra has the "stuff" to start, he's always been far more effective as a reliever, and would take forever to "stretch out" to pitch 5-6 innings.

Brewers get a live arm for Kottaras, with surprisingly good major league stats.

He has struggled this year, which is why he was available. 11 K's per 9 frames in the bigs, let's hope someone can "straighten him out." Great guy to take a flyer on.

His minor league numbers, while his ERA's are mediocre, offer some hope, a career 3-1 K/BB ratio,  11.6 K/9, only 15 HR's allowed in 300+ innings, and a 1.23 WHIP. Note his AA and AAA home teams have been Midland in the Texas League and Sacramento in the PCL...difficult environments to say the least.

Per Fangraphs, his average velocity on his fastball in the majors has been 95.6 mph. This is what you call hoping a guy puts it all together.

One of the funnier things I've seen in a while...Demi Moore, who filed for divorce from Ashton Kutcher because he continually cheated on her with young, gorgeous women is unhappy because he is in a relationship with one.

If only he was miserable and alone, crying himself to sleep, everything would be perfect in Demi's world...

And yes, I follow Ashton on Twitter, because I love listening to him tell everyone how he's superior to all of us because he's incredibly far-left...and I laugh and laugh and laugh.  He doesn't even get it.

I'm not sure what's going to happen when liberals find out that Chik-Fil-A's policy is basically identical to Obama's beliefs until a month ago...and still identical to his policies.

And yes, I do think the fact that they are such bigots when it comes to people having beliefs that may not be popular at the moment to be delicious irony.

I got home from work about 5:30, and the Rambling wife and son went to church tonight, and just called to ask about dinner. We decided on Chinese, and she asked me to call it in, as she, like many women, hate ordering over the phone. I hung up with her and typed in the number by memory.

1. I guess it's better than having it in the contacts.

2. This is why I'm fat.

3. Or, I'm fat because of this.

The Rambling wife and I use our credit card for everything...knock on wood, we've always been able to pay it off at the end of the month, except for a month or two back when I was in sales (100% commission) for five years.

If some businesses do this and others don't, we'll avoid them. However, if retailers band together, this may change the way Americans shop.

I'm kind of ambivalent about the subject, but I am a strong believer in math. And I can't imagine a ne'er-do-well saying, "Well, I would commit armed robbery this evening, but since it's against the law, I think I'll go to the symphony."

(7/28/2012 05:55:00 PM) - Al

I would think a contender would call the Brewers and pick up Randy Wolf, as he has pitched nicely of late, and supposedly, the Crew is asking for little in return, and would pay all but the minimum salary.

I doubt hardly anyone has five SP's better than Wolf, and though his season has been pedestrian overall, he's still only went fewer than five innings in three starts in 2012.

7/28/2012 05:55:00 PM

(7/28/2012 05:44:00 PM) - Al

A's will acquire Kottaras, most likely for cash or a low level prospect.

He was undervalued when the Crew picked him up, and he still is, as most catchers are close to an automatic out. He's just another guy in the field, but there are a lot of backup catchers whose OBP sits about .255 who don't harken memories of John Bench either.

(7/27/2012 09:49:00 PM) - Al

Livian Hernandez might well be back with the Brewers next year if he pitches like he has thus far.

Very small sample, but his numbers in relief are very solid, which makes sense considering the difference in velocity between him and most SP's.

I said many times I felt Fiers might have success as a #4/5 SP, but was more likely to find his niche as a reliever.

Sorry for doubting you Mike.

ERA is important, but when looking at young arms, the wheat separates from the chaff by using K/9. If they can't hit it, they're very likely to find success and keep moving up.

Los Angeles paid a "significant" price for Greinke, especially given that he's only under contract through the rest of this season, writes ESPN's Keith Law (Insider subscription required). As for the minor league package going to Milwaukee, "it's only marginally less than the Brewers initially gave up for two years of Greinke, but has a lot more risk, as all three of the prospects involved have fairly low floors," says Law.--MLBTR

That was my thought, that other than Lo Cain, the pieces are similar, and the guys the Crew received have a bit more upside.

Segura was rated as the 55th best prospect in baseball by Baseball America headed into this season and the shortstop put up solid numbers at Double-A Arkansas, hitting .294/.346/.404.--John Sickels

John Hellwig RHP, Grade B-: 3.31 ERA in 111 innings for Arkansas, 84/56 K/BB, 99 hits. Command is erratic and his K/IP ratio is low for a guy who throws as hard as Hellweg, but he's eating innings and collecting grounders at a good clip.--John Sickels

Ariel Pena RHP, Grade C+: He's better than he looked in the Futures Game. 2.92 ERA with a 98/37 K/BB in 102 innings in Double-A, 88 hits. Throwing strikes more efficiently this year. RHP, Grade C+: He's better than he looked in the Futures Game. 2.92 ERA with a 98/37 K/BB in 102 innings in Double-A, 88 hits. Throwing strikes more efficiently this year.--Sickels

Segura also made his Major League debut on July 24 as the Angels called him up as depth for the injured Erick Aybar.  With Mike Trout and Garrett Richards now in the majors, Segura was considered to be the top prospect remaining in the Halos' system.  The 22-year-old has been considered by some teams to be best suited for second base, according to ESPN's Buster Olney, though for now Segura fills the shortstop void left behind by Escobar in the Brewers' system.

Pena, 23, has a 3.37 ERA, an 8.9 K/9 rate and a 2.2 K/BB rate in 111 games (103 of them starts) over six seasons in the Angels' system.  Hellweg, also 23, was a 16th-round pick for the Angels in the 2008 amateur draft.  He has a 3.66 ERA and a 9.6 K/9 rate in 127 minor league games (38 starts) though control has been an issue, as Hellweg has a career 6.4 BB/9 rate.--MLBTR

Thanks to the Rambling son for posting the previous link for me, as my internet at work is so slow, it closed twice as I was trying to get on to post.

I'm only in the 2nd inning of the DVR'd version of the game, but from quick capsules of the youngsters picked up (a 22 year-old SS, one of the best in the game; and two fine young 23 year-old SP's, both with good arms, velocity, and plus stuff) seem to indicate, that, once again, it is Doug's world, we're just living in it.

Suddenly, the upper levels of the minors, both AA and AAA, are very well stocked with future role players and everyday players, optimistically, a dozen or so at each.

I was having trouble with my ignition a while back, and luckily, the problem was solved with a new key, as my car exceeded its warranty back when we had a president who believed in capitalism, free markets, and the like...a long, long time ago.

The Rambling wife has had trouble with hers this week, but a change in keys did not work. She asked me to make an appointment next week, when I'm off four days in a row.

I'd love to see a total rebuild if it was the right time, but Mark A doesn't believe in it, and watching the Pirates struggle for years before finally looking solid, I get it. Look at Theo's Cubs.

(7/26/2012 09:02:00 AM) - Al

Being a contrarian, I often am chided for being way off the beaten path...though often, in a span of weeks, months, or years, you'll note a shift which puts me back in the majority. I often blame this on the emotion that often outweighs common sense, and also, is often stronger at the time.

It occurred to me last night that this six game losing streak may have been the best thing that could have happened. If they would have won 4 or 5 of 6, they would still be a mathematical improbability to make the playoffs, down 5-6 in the wildcard, and behind several teams. But, that "hope" would have probably led to them keeping Greinke, and clinging to that tiny chance. Then, inevitably, they would have lost 5 of 7, been right back to 8 back, with the deadline in the rearview mirror.

Doug has the best pitcher in the game that's available at the deadline, and several teams competing against each other. A week ago, I would have been very satisfied with a pair of good not great prospects. Now, they should manage to receive at least one very good young player, and quite possibly, 2-3 difference makers. There's no prize for winning 82 instead of 76.

7/26/2012 09:02:00 AM

(7/26/2012 08:48:00 AM) - Al

Checking Twitter, the amount of "If Melvin does this, he should be fired" posts are pretty tough to read. They not only have any idea, they, without fail, also misspell Greinke.

What's also funny is fans of other teams saying "this prospect is enough for him," then the next guy saying they should give that guy plus three more.

The deadline brings out the most casual of casual fans.

Just thought I'd pass this news along.. the Milwaukee Brewers are in serious talks with a team about trading P Zack Greinke. More TBA.--Karl Ravech, ESPN

Twitter says it's ATL. Time will tell.

We can only hope a bidding war erupts. He's by far the best SP on the market, and those nine days off means he is rested and apparently healthy.

Also, many thoughts online today that Greinke will seriously consider returning to the Brewers, as he is close to the players and front office.

EDIT: Ravech now says it is ATL.

7/25/2012 09:18:00 PM

(7/25/2012 08:50:00 PM) - Al

White Sox would have to include a third team, as their top 2-3 prospects is not enough for Greinke.

7/25/2012 08:50:00 PM

(7/25/2012 08:26:00 PM) - Al

Word is Greinke is the top target of the Rangers and Braves, and that the Brewers had an extended conversation with one team before today's game...several hours, trying to lay the groundwork.

White Sox and Angels also love Greinke.

Lucroy is due back tomorrow, and it seems likely that even if they send Maldonado down, he won't leave MIL, as Kottaras is rumored to have 3-5 suitors. They might DFA him, as ARI did with Ryan Roberts.

Hart is expected to stay, and Ramirez will only be moved if they get a near perfect deal. Many teams asking about both, RH power is at a premium.

Wolf available, and he did pitch well the other night. He must be better than some team's last starter. Teams cool on KRod after last two outings. One scout did say his velocity was very good, 93-94, but he looked lost, like he was afraid to throw a strike.

Targets said to be a young SS, young power bats, and young pitching...and the pitching is desired to be close to major league ready, AA and above, all of which we have heard numerous times before.

That's what I came up after about 20 minutes online, both in print and "between the lines," which many fail miserably to figure out.

I don't think the Crew has the horses in the high minors, but Hanley is a prize SS, and should be coveted by the Crew.

The Brewers' ideal scenario is to trade third baseman Aramis Ramirez to the Dodgers in exchange for pitching prospect Zach Lee and then deal Greinke to the Rangers for third base prospect Mike Olt, reports Jim Bowden of SiriusXM ESPN radio (via Twitter). Bowden adds that such a sequence of moves is unlikely, however.--MLBTR

Well yes, that would be nice. So would Jennifer Love Hewitt moving in next door.

The answer to that trivia question on the telecast, what can scouts see at the ballpark they can't see on TV?

Almost nothing. The really funny thing is, Greinke has years of data to study, so the idea someone is going to be surprised is laughable. As the Moneyball movie said, scouts argue some kid won't make it because he has an ugly girlfriend (a sign he lacks confidence).

Of course, "almost nothing" does not equal nothing...even if they can pick up 5% more, maybe notice a grimace after a pitch that may indicate Zack is hiding an injury (or, maybe he has indigestion, it's an inexact science). Many teams improved their video departments and got rid of their advance scouts, but most have added them back again.

The NCAA decides the best punishment for Penn State is to take away the education of 20 young men 15+ years later. Oh, and no bowl games for those in the program more than a decade later.

That'll teach 'em.

Whenever you have a "you gotta do something" mentality, common sense tends to take a backseat to, well, doing...something. I see a PSU player who was paralyzed in a game that the NCAA is trying to say never took place (yes really, egads) tweeted out a scathing note to the NCAA, finishing it with the phrase, "We Are," allowing the brethren to fill in the "Penn State" part.

No doubt the current program will suffer short-term, but in the past, when major sanctions hit, a few alumni shy away, but the vast majority dig deep and far more money flows in, as it initiates an "us versus them" mentality.

Maybe this will be the "new beginning" that will allow them to update those painfully plain unis.

The Brewers are not ready to declare themselves sellers, but after losing three straight games to the Reds over the weekend Milwaukee is moving in that direction, Rosenthal reports. “We’ve put ourselves in a position where it’s a tough hill to climb,” GM Doug Melvin acknowledged. The Rangers, Angels, Braves and Nationals are among the teams that have shown some level of interest in Zack Greinke, according to Rosenthal. The 44-50 Brewers could also trade Randy Wolf, Francisco Rodriguez and George Kottaras, among others.--Fox, via MLBTR

The Brewers seem sure to sell after they were swept over the weekend in Cincinnati to fall 10 1/2 games behind the first-place Reds. Going to prep a quick paragraph on the Brewers' possible trading chips. I will keep updating this same post, but will publish it after each player, so keep checking back, if you are with us on Sunday afternoon.

Zack Greinke--Obviously the biggest chip, and will almost certainly be traded unless injured or if he agrees to an extension. Mega-talented, comes with the baggage of an anxiety disorder and a reputation as being an oddball. Could spark a bidding war if he pitches well in his next start or two. Doug will look for talent in short supply, namely, a young SS, a power bat, and young pitching.

Frankie Rodriguez--Pitching well, and probably a bit overrated in MLB circles because he comes with the title of "proven closer" on his resume. A bit overpaid, though paying $3M for the rest of the campaign will not scare away more than a team or two. A perfect fit for the Mets, but let's not forget, the Crew gave up nearly nothing for him last July, though he was paid more and had some off-field baggage that limited his value. A single prospect with limited upside would be the expected haul.

Nyjer Morgan--Many will be surprised to see him this high on the list, but they shouldn't be, as he plays a position of organizational strength, and will be priced out of the '13 plans. Many have not noticed his '12 stats are nearly identical to his '11 numbers if you leave out his crappy April this year. Just a platoon guy or late inning replacement to many, but with Juan Pierre being bandied about as desired by many, Morgan will have takers...though like Greinke, some teams will be scared off by his eccentric qualities.  Very few teams do not have a roster spot for a guy who can play all the OF spots and runs well.

Aramis Ramirez--I do not feel he will be traded, as it is not what Doug has done thus far in his tenure. Many would take this as a step of a "tear it down, build it back up over the next few years" rebuild. That said, he's probably the best run producer on the market, and 3B is a position of weakness in MLB. He's also not just a rental, signed through 2014, and there's not a contender out there where he would not be an upgrade at 1B/3B/DH, and given the overall weakness of the hot corner, in many cases, a sizable one. If put on the market, he could yield a couple of nice additions to the system.

Shawn Marcum--Difficult to decide where to put him, as if he returns at full strength, he could be a much desired August arm, though the waiver procedure would limit his worth.

Cesar Izturis--Another guy the casuals will be surprised to see, though he'll bring nothing back other than a live arm or bat with a bit of potential. Very solid defender, and while he doesn't hit much, neither do most all SS's. Bonus points for being a switch-hitter, able to play all infield spots at a plus rate, and for being a quiet, compatible team guy.

Loe, Parra, Veras--I'm just going to put this group together, as they all are in that "eligible for arby, might make more than they are worth if tendered" category. Manny, in particular, as a lefty who throws in the mid 90's, might make a team think he is a very nice piece. They're probably all August trades, as teams might lose a reliever to injury and make a claim.

Cody Ransom--Nice role player, a bit stretched out as the everyday SS, but plays all four infield spots and has pop, would fit in nicely on several benches.

George Kottaras--Limited appeal, as a catcher with OBP/HR skill, lefty bat adds interest. Cleared waivers last season, so return would be minimal.

Travis Ishikawa---Nice lefty bat off the bench, especially if a team has a RH 1B that is not a very good fielder. Very little in return, however.

Randy Wolf--Has been unlucky and ineffective this year, but might still be a step up as a swingman, especially a team that has some doubleheaders in September. No matter how mediocre, SP's that can go 6 innings have value, especially if they're looking at TBA as their scheduled SP. If Randy could put together 13 innings with 2 earned runs, the phone would ring, I promise.

Another casualty of common sense due to the "well, something has to be done" mantra.

This has nothing to do with the latest Batman flick, it has to do with an evil, pathetic coward who opened fire in an enclosed area. It's too bad a normal citizen just didn't happen to be carrying and would have been able to put a bullet in his brain after the first shot was fired. And that has nothing to do with how much the film grosses.

7/22/2012 12:08:00 PM

(7/22/2012 11:43:00 AM) - Al

The Reds have only used five SP's the entire season. Needless to say, that's a vital part of their success.

I believe the Crew has "only" used seven, and Fiers has been fantastic. As I have pointed out, the bullpen would be a lot better with Mike and Marco in it. It's a domino effect, and no matter how good Marty has been behind the plate, he hasn't hit a fraction as well as Lucroy before his injury.

I talked a lot about the good health last year, but needless to say, I was in the minority. The "depth" of this year's squad has performed admirably, especially Aoki, Maldonado, and Ransom, but as almost always occurs, weaknesses show up once they're playing six days a week instead of two. Yuni B had warts, but performed better in '11 than the non-Gonzalez SS's in '12.

This "mental break" may well be a backhanded method the Crew is using to convince Zack that they have his best interests at heart, and will work with him, whether he has more "mental" issues or physical ones. Did Zack admit to being tired, or having a "dead arm?"

I, of course, have no idea. But, I also know Doug and Mark are crazy like a fox. Having him miss a single turn at a critical juncture is just strange enough to make Greinke think MIL is, indeed, different from the rest.

Adam does a fine job discussing the options as the deadline nears.

I would say a lot depends on the next week or so. But, Mark A is not going to give up on his hopes of a hot streak or 3M fans until they lose enough to make that silly. As of now, it's not a mathematical favorite, but it's very possible...though not probable.

Enjoying my 3 day weekend that began at 6:15 or so tonight.

I do have that pesky shift from 9-5 on Saturday, but when you're an eternal optimist like me, I'd probably just waste it by sleeping anyway.

(7/18/2012 10:27:00 PM) - Al

So, 2/3rd's of the way through the important stretch, the Brewers are 4-2, 7 games behind both the division leaders and the wildcard spot.

Realistically, if you're more than five games back at the break, you're not going to make the playoffs. Mark A and Doug are hoping they can have a good stretch and get within 5 and just keep climbing. This team is talented enough, with a deep, plus rotation and above average offense, to go on a run. The bullpen has been up and down, but they sure have "stuff"...today's quad relief special...Axford, Parra, Veras, and KRod...it's very easy for the amateur scout in us to watch them and say Frankie has the least ability of all of them...and I'm not even sure it's close.

I recall several years ago, before KRod was acquired by the Crew, that a scout pronounced him "done," and said something to the effect of "He's been getting by on heart for years." No doubt he looked fatigued today, on day four in a row, he can certainly use the day off and the 48+ hours to recuperate before the next contest.

The Detroit Tigers have shown interest in Arizona Diamondbacks infielders Stephen Drew and Ryan Roberts, major-league sources told FOXSports.com … It’s not clear how advanced the talks are, but sources say there has been dialogue between the clubs on scenarios involving one or both players.
Drew has only played a handful of games since coming back from a broken ankle and the Tigers have a shortstop in Jhonny Peralta who is having a down year (he’s probably the most yo-yoing player in the game, so no surprise), so that seems like a weird matchup, trade-wise. The key here is likely Roberts, who while pretty terrible, is still a second base upgrade for the Tigers.--Craig, Hardball Talk

Emphasis added to show headshakingly ignorant crap.

Craig is as bad as Gleeman is good, as he spends most of his day whining about non-baseball related stuff and understands nothing about the game, especially the business aspect. However, this is truly pathetic reporting. Roberts is a very decent 2B option, though I'd deduct a few points for playing in ARI, an offensive paradise.

Ryan Roberts, 2010-12--.316/.398
Ave 2B, 2011------------.320./389

Also, Roberts is +5 UZR and +3 DRS in 101 defensive games at 2B, which would seem to indicate he is very good on defense too.  "Pretty terrible" is not an apt description, to say the least, and is a perfect example of his lack of research and flip, irrelevant "commentary" that he passes off instead of bothering to, you know, give an effort.

The irony is, the Dems have been wrong (and often, proven to be lying) about everything...concealed weapons was going to lead to a civil war in the streets, with guns going off at random during church, weddings, and 4H meetings, leading to many innocent deaths. Instead, we've seen the same thing that existed in the 40some other states that had it...responsible gun owners do not cause any problems, but criminals do.

Of course, none of this has happened, just like we have not seen 50 kids in a class, nor mass resignations from teachers (of course not, they remain paid far more than supply and demand dictates, which is why taxes remain far too high...but working downward, baby steps).

All they have is scare tactics and tired, antiquated ideas. Nothing sums them up more than the utter and complete failure of every aspect of the Obama administration.

Hey, you'd be talking about Bain if your record could be summed up with $1T stimulus that did nothing and the highest deficits, by far, in history.

Royals release Sanchez.

Great guy to take a chance on and hope he can have a couple good starts and flip him before the August deadline. Almost certain he is injured at least somewhat, as healthy pitchers don't go from years of a 3-4 ERA to a 7 if 100%.

(7/17/2012 03:28:00 PM) - Al

When the Dodgers asked about Aramis Ramirez, the Brewers were said to be asking for major league ready pitching. No talk of an actual deal, but the idea MIL told them what they wanted implies he is available, should they sell.

3B is such a weak spot, AAA vets that are stopgaps would be quite poor, though a Ransom/Green platoon would probably not be awful by any means.

Back to work.

7/17/2012 03:28:00 PM

No confirmation of it yet, but reading between the lines,  have to think KRod will have the 9th tonight, if nothing else, to give Axford a couple days off, or to pitch in less stressful scenarios. He said he had no idea where his pitches were going, and Roenicke reiterated that...unlikely he'll be asked to close after that.

This would seem to suggest that Yunel Escobar and Cliff Pennington are available. I like both as options for the Crew, and Stephen Drew is a FA after this season and it would be a dream come true if the Crew went after him as well.

Don't get down on Cliff because he plays in a terrible offensive environment, a 700+ OPS on the road in his career.

Orioles have AL's second-worst run differential (behind Twins) at -52, but they'll be 46-43.--Gleeman

7/16/2012 09:52:00 PM

(7/16/2012 08:19:00 PM) - Al

Last night, I woke up at 2:30 to use the bathroom. I was then awake for a half-hour to an hour or so. My mind was going 100 mph, and I could not get back to sleep.

What was I thinking of, you ask?

One of the Twitter accounts I follow is Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook...the gent basically updates us on what HS players are receiving scholly offers and where others have decided to play (as WIAC schools do not offer financial assistance). Over the weekend, he said one player had been offered a full ride to play buckets for New Mexico.

For some reason, all I could think about was how tough a decision that would be. I assume that young man has probably spent his life cheering for the Badgers. Bo only offers 1-2 WI kids a year. If the Badgers do not offer you, most Big Ten teams probably won't either.

That takes you down to the Milwaukees and Green Bays, or maybe St. Louis, Bowling Green, Illinois State, and the like. Most all athletes would rather play D1 than not, but think how far away New Mexico is. If that's your only offer, do you take it? For some reason, mind kept thinking about that, and what a tough call that would be for a 17 year-old, especially when he has to think about what if he gets hurt, what if the offer gets pulled, and so on.

This is especially funny when one considers my limited athletic ability. Unless they would have given out scholarships for enjoyment of pie...

Greinke is unable to confirm or deny anything Roenicke says to protect him.

Possibly, the most embarrassing lack of response I've ever seen. No future in politics for Zack, to say the least.

And those who insist Greinke is not "different" or mentally weak are left looking like fools. Whoever ends up with him after this season will have to do the same thing KC and MIL have...treat him with kid gloves, and just hope for the best. He simply cannot handle any sort of scrutiny whatsoever.

Meanwhile, while it can't help his trade value (several more teams will likely be scared of by the timing and the goofy response), I can certainly see the other side of it...he wants to pitch for a contender, and might well be able to "just worry about pitching" for a couple months...especially with a team not having to worry about 3-5 years down the road. If he were with another team and the Crew was buyers, he'd be a perfect "buy low" candidate, and there will be teams that think that way. All it takes is one.

7/16/2012 05:38:00 PM

(7/16/2012 03:42:00 PM) - Al

Ron Haskins, co-author of the Brookings study, which looked at Census Bureau data on a sample of Americans, wrote that the analysis found that young adults who finished high school, worked full time and got married after age 21 and before having kids "had a 2 percent chance of winding up in poverty and a 74 percent chance of winding up in the middle class (defined as earning roughly $50,000 or more). By contrast, young adults who violated all three norms had a 76 percent chance of winding up in poverty and a 7 percent chance of winding up in the middle class.--Minding the Campus.com

For the most part, barring health issues or the like, poverty is a choice.

The reason the government can't win the "war on poverty" is because people continue to make incredibly bad decisions.
