Green Bay Southwest basketball standout Aaron Moesch has accepted a preferred walk on offer to Wisconsin.

As I said when it happened, it's tough believe any WI kid who was there at the Michigan game as a guest of the program would turn that down, when his only D1 scholly offer was from Eastern Illinois, unless they just somehow cannot afford the in state tuition, room and board.

Unlike most walk ons in Madison, who have been  6 footers, Aaron is a 6-7 athlete who may well "break out" once he gets used to his height.

You know a program is mighty when kids turn down scholarships elsewhere to play for Bucky. Good for him, and for Bo.

EDIT: I thought it was odd that I had not saw this on Twitter, as I followed him months ago. I double checked, and his girlfriend spilled the beans 20 minutes ago. Lesson #1, don't tell your gal pal anything you did not want everyone to know.:)

Nice call on the Penn State Michigan contest. Wish you would have published it earlier for those of us who like to bet on gut feelings.

Just had a lot of signs...Penn State has been playing close games, but could not put together a full 40. Michigan is athletic and talented, but often struggles. They had won two straight, and it's easy to look past a winless conference opponent. It did not go down like I thought, as MICH was up 15 with less than ten minutes left.

Ellis with an off balance 3 as the buzzer sounds for a nearly unheard of two game Texas sweep. Six games up on the Raptors, as Doug Collins pretty much threw his 76ers under the bus after last night's game, it's hard to think of them as a possibility right now.

Two great games (Penn State and the Bucks) to watch and enjoy tonight, along with a little Survivor.

EDIT: Watching the replay, it's very funny to watch the referees motion the Bucks back on the court, as they are not supposed to leave the court as they check the replay. As they were ignored, Kevin McHale, the coach of the Rockets, also walked up the tunnel right behind them, as he knew the shot was out of Monta's hands with half a second to spare.

49ers look to be reloading, picking up at least one quality pick for their backup QB.

You'll often notice good teams adding draft picks annually, often doing things like trading their 4th round pick this year in exchange for moving down a dozen picks for another team's 4th rounder and a 6th or 7th round selection, either this year or next.

Bucks win a big one on the road over the Mavs (and yes, they're all big road wins).

When you lose tough games by a point or two, you never know if it's bad luck or bad decision making. They did everything right tonight, and DAL missed their shots late. Sometimes, that's the difference. Ellis dominated late in the 4th quarter, and for the first time in years, Jennings sat on the bench at the end, as the Bucks went with Monta/JJ/Mike/Ersan/Larry fore the final 2-3 minutes.

Over time, I would think New York might actually get less cash from raising cig taxes, because few New York residents do not live near another state (I think casinos are also exempt). Short term, many folks may think in their head, well, I'll quit soon, so this higher price isn't that big of a deal. Time will tell, but I still have the over/under at a $25T debt in 1/17...and I'd still bet the over. Wait until interest rates start rising from historical lows, something this administration has never thought about, just like Medicare/Medicaid being bankrupt in a decade or so.

The true ignorance is that they'd remain in such a hated place, even though they are free to leave at any time. There are no fences keeping them in. I know many of you are waiting breathlessly for the results of my Boo Berry taste test.

The Rambling son joined me for the big moment. We opened the box and the inner pack. As expected, it looked pristine, nearly perfect. I poured a bowl and we took a look...he had never saw Boo Berry before, the poor, abused child. He tried it and said it tasted pretty good. However, he had nothing to compare it to, so his opinion was rendered meaningless.

My opinion? Well, Boo Berry is made up of two parts, the blueberry flavored cereal, and the fruity marshmallows. The cereal both looked and tasted normal, as good as you would find if it was Halloween time. However, the marshmallows were very stale, they were not the correct consistency.

Of course, Boo Berry is usually eaten with milk, as with most cereal. Once I put milk on it, not only was the cereal delicious, the moisture seemed to rehydrate the marshmallows. If I would not have tried it before, I would have said it was nearly perfect.

Therefore, as judge and jury, I am saying the correct response was "not as good as fresh, but pretty close."

Ramblings does not take any responsibility for others trying such a test, though I doubt anyone is this hard up for something to do....other than myself, of course.

FINAL BUMP--If you haven't voted, what do you think? As of yet, not a single person thinks 5-6 year-old cereal will be visibly bad.

I was just looking for something in our pantry, and came across a box of unopened Booberry cereal. I bought it at Halloween time in 2005 or 2006, as it's "best by" date is Jan 2007. So, it's time for a will it taste?

I'm not even a little surprised. Marx's ideas appeal to the haves because they already have the money, and assume they'll keep it, or always be in the ruling class. This is similar to the plantation owners being in favor of slavery even though many had moral reservations against it. They saw it as the only way to insure their standard of living.

This is just like the study that found Occupy members were almost entirely white, upper class, and insufferably ignorant. Poor folks were out working, only those living on Daddy's money had the time to vandalize and do enough drugs to be Occupy dudes.

The money honey says sequestration is a national defense issue, not an economic one.

That's the best analysis I've read. That's why McCain is so worried about it, and why the administration is not, as they stopped pretending to care about national security the day after the election.

Anyone who pretends this has anything to do with economics is just showing their ignorance of it.

Marlins' owner speaks out.

I think Miami will be far better than most think, as will the Astros. A massive rebuild, what I usually refer to as "starting over" has proven to work just as well as any other. Sure, you might "only" win 50-60 games instead of 70, but they both get you the same place, nowhere. The Pirates have avoided doing that, and finally bit the bullet (relax, no one was harmed by using that analogy) 2-3 years ago, and the results have been nearly immediate, as they just missed a .500 campaign last season.

Mark A has said he doesn't think it would work on a business level in Milwaukee, but those that think it dooms a team to failure for several years is ignoring history. Look, I love the fact the Brewers have had a competitive team for the past six years, a success cycle like that is really all you can hope for as a small market team.

That said, when the day comes that they win fewer games and likely draw smaller crowds, I'll be the first to say I'll probably attend more games. I don't like big crowds, a packed parking lot, or long lines. I have no doubt we'll see lower attendance in Miami, but we'll also see a more intelligent crowd, and in a couple seasons, many people will say, "I can't believe Miami is good again so soon."

The President has discretion on these cuts. This is why I'm so frustrated with Washington. Instead of cutting air traffic controllers at CWA and other public safety services, the President should first cut the F16 jets he is gifting to Egypt; and the $27 million the federal government spends on Moroccan pottery classes; the $2.2. Billion we spend on free cell phones; and the $700,000 spent to study how long shrimp can run on a treadmill. I'll work with anyone to cut this wasteful Washington spending and preserve the services Americans depend on.--Sean Duffy, my Congressman

Take a look at the actual sequester dollar cuts. If you're getting to be around my age, you may want to go get your reading glasses. I'll wait.

How will we survive?

They should do that times 2-3 every damn year until we get back to Reagan's percentages. You know, when we let children die from hunger and the world was a cold, evil place.

That's the amazing thing...I grew up in the 70's and 80's, and if anything, it was a better social atmosphere than today.

As Reagan so truthfully put it, we had a war on poverty, and poverty won. The last fifty years have seen billions given away, and there are more poor than before said programs existed.

Giving cash to those in need simply doesn't work, as we now have generations of folks who simply abuse the system, and whose "job" consists solely of waiting for a monthly stipend.

Hammond says they will use Ellis at the point when Jennings is not in, and that Monta and Brandon were playing far too many minutes, so they needed a better 3rd guard.

If you've heard that before, that's because I said it. The sad thing is, I'm a pretty casual fan, and even I knew that.

With the addition of Redick, four very solid 3 point shooters, though only one can really create their own shot:

You can win a lot of games shooting 3's, free throws, and playing good defense. The Bucks don't shoot many from the line, and they have few good defenders...though Sanders makes a below average defender decent.

On when the potential trade of the Hawks' Josh Smith fell apart:

"I was talking to the guys in Milwaukee and Orlando, and they had been talking about that three-way deal with Orlando, Milwaukee and Atlanta, and finally it was 10 minutes to 3 — it was 2:52 p.m., and Atlanta had pulled out and said, 'Forget it, we're not doing this.' And that's when Milwaukee and Orlando did the two-way deal for JJ Redick. Atlanta took it down to the wire, rejected the last offer Milwaukee made, and Milwaukee said, 'We're not giving you any more for Smith.' "--Yahoo

We know now why the Hawks suck. Takes them three days to make a three minute egg. Luckily, the Bucks were smart enough to back out with time left to make another trade.

The more I think about it, they could have had $7M in cap room and Luc and Epke, but they chose $13M in cap room and no one. I suppose some would say that's fine, but while far from stars, both are quality members of a rotation, plus defenders, and young enough to still have some upside.

Unless they resign Smith for the max, they failed to see the forest for the trees.

You may or may not know that Hooters has taken some flak over the years. We’ve endured our share of frivolous lawsuits, but none have put a dent in our ability to provide some good, old-fashioned fun in a casual atmosphere free from the intervention of outside parties with nefarious motives. It took awhile, but we finally worked the word “nefarious” into casual conversation.

The point is, we’re proud of who we are. Yes, we have a pretty face. And sex appeal is part of our thing, but it’s not the only thing.

It goes to show that you can’t judge a book by its cover. There will always be those out there looking to take a shot at us, or have the government dictate what we can or can’t do, but we’ll just take it in stride and continue our quest to provide a fun, enlightened atmosphere where you can enjoy the finer things in life. And really, what is so offensive about an owl, anyway?

As noted above, we are deeply involved in the communities we serve and support many charitable organizations, focusing on cancer research, disaster relief and the military.--Hooters web site

I've read several people say they don't know how the Bucks will use Redick...when Beno was hurt earlier this year, Monta played point whenever Jennings wasn't on the floor (a couple times when the game was in garbage time, Daniels or Lamb brought the ball up). I think they'll use a three guard combo platter, and, "go with who's hot" at the end of games.

On this day in 1980, the U.S. men’s hockey team pulls off one of the biggest upsets in sports history with a 4-3 victory over the heavily favored Soviet Union at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Two days later, the Americans went on to beat Finland and take home the gold medal.--Unapologetically American

Much like the UW-Michigan game a couple weekends ago, that is why we watch sports. It was a great game to watch, and the thing I remember most is how slow the clock went. There were seven minutes left, and about ten minutes later, there were five.

Time went as slow as it does when you're working out, or during a root canal.

A couple years later, Jim Valvano's little NC State team upset Goliath as well. I don't think there's been as big an upset on a big stage since.

2/21/2013 06:28:00 PM

(2/21/2013 06:21:00 PM) - Al

Hawks pulled out of deal at last minute, would have got Smith for MaM, Udrih, and Udoh, plus a protected #1 draft pick. To be honest, 3 role players (only two after Beno leaves this summer) probably is not worth as much as all that empty cap space.

2/21/2013 06:21:00 PM

(2/21/2013 03:40:00 PM) - Al

I see some Bucks' fans are somewhat unhappy about Tobias and Doron being included. Neither is much right now, though both could be solid role players (and Lamb is so young, he may develop into more). However, I like Jon Leuer better than either of them, and many were very upset he was included in the deal to pick up Sam Dalembert last summer. Since then, he's been released by HOU, signed by CLE, and then traded to MEM just to even out the money in another swap.

Basketball is such a star driven game, while players 3-8 on the roster are important, they are almost as interchangeable as utility infielders and relief pitchers. Some guys work better in one style than others, and often change teams often.

The one big positive I see is Redick will play a lot more than Udrih, and not only does he bring an added dimension of another good outside shooter, but he'll help limit the minutes of Ellis and Jennings, who have been averaging about 38 minutes a contest. As small as they are, that should keep them fresher as well.

2/21/2013 03:40:00 PM

(2/21/2013 03:27:00 PM) - Al

Bucks trade Beno for Redick, others included on both sides to make money work. Magic get two young players with upside, very little long term change.

I would say the key is the Bucks now have a better 3 guard combo now than they did yesterday, and Redick is a very good outside shooter, which should help. I sure wish the Bucks would have picked up a complementary guard of some sort in case of injury, as of this second, MaM and Dunleavy would have to move down to play some 1 and 2 minutes.

ADDED: Sorry, one of the salary cap pieces is Ish Smith, a 6 foot point guard. As silly as it sounds, if Jennings would get hurt, he could be a vital 12-15 minute a game guy as the season concludes.

Every zone has a weakness, or a hole. That's why many coaches never play one.

That said, if the weakness is also your opponent's weakness, it is often a good idea, especially if you're a poor defensive team (or have a couple undersized or crappy defenders).

If you play a 2-3, the offensive team can basically get a good look at a 3 every time down, just with good passing. Yet, Syracuse plays it all the time, and they do it well.

I was just thinking last night, if I was younger and single, you know, college age, I'd start a blog called The Random Life, and for one year, I'd let a random number generator make all my decisions for me.

For example, say I was unsure about what college to go to, I'd assign each UW college a number and hit enter and just like that, my decision would be made. I could do the same thing on many decisions, what movie to see, what to have for dinner, and so on. It's probably been done, but it sure seems like fun, especially if you're 21 and have no life (and, as was usually the case, no girlfriend). Who knows, I could have met Mrs. Ramblings that way (and sadly, the Rambling wife would spend her days pining for me, even though we would have never met).

Are the Bucks allowed to talk to Smith, or is this just hearsay? That would leave Ersan as the only possibility both money and talent wise, as the Bucks have no intention of dealing Sanders or Henson, and numerous sources say Jennings is off the table as well.

Also seeing the Bucks have stopped talking to the Magic about Redick, which probably means Ellis isn't going anywhere.

Finally, seeing talk of a 3 way with Bucks sending Ellis to ATL, ATL sending Smith to NY, and Amare Stoudemire to MIL...not sure if that would start another deal or what?.

On the local news last night, they had a story about women buying wasp spray to use for self-defense, since it shoots strong and up to 25 feet.

Of course, it's pretty worthless if the attacker holds up a binder of his hand and deflects it away. Better than nothing, I suppose.

I had to go pick up my son for his asthma therapy and shot last week. Despite his school having a buzzer, security doors, and what I assume to be bulletproof glass, I wandered in undisturbed. I walked into the office, no one was there. I waited a minute or two, getting madder every second. Finally, I went to his room and knocked on the door. I told the student who answered the door who I needed, he went over and told my son, and he put his stuff away and came over. I had to tell him to go inform the teacher he was leaving, as she was at her desk in back with kids sitting around her, she never even noticed.

When I brought my son back, I asked to speak with the principal, as none of the security measures were in place then either. I gave her a piece of my mind, and told her all the taxpayer money they spent on security was wasted if they don't use it. She barely acknowledged me, saying only that, "Sir, we do not have the time to let all our visitors in by hand, that's 75-100 a day. We have a school to run."

As she was dismissing me, the secretary was sitting at a desk, painting her nails. I kid you not. I'll be at the school board's next meeting, but I have pretty low hopes. She's been there 30+ years, and is known as a goddess.

Thank you for your work you do. Wish we had more regular folks fighting the fight.

The Rambling son brought home his school newsletter last night. Two items of note, one is they "changed the policy" on the doors being locked...they will now all be locked during the day, and you have to be buzzed in. You'll recall, this is what I suggested and I wondered why they would not do this. Just took a few kids to get shot in CT for someone to realize how lazy they were being.

Secondly, the Rambling son was in the kitchen loading/unloading the dishwasher, and I said, "Think how funny it would be if the Dates to Remember section was stuff like Sat, 2/23--Pam, movies; Tue, 2/26--Sara, walk in the park."

There was about a minute long pause and finally he laughed and said, "Oh, I get it, dates you need to remember. That's funny."

Bo's presser from today.

FYI, I just heard on his coach's show last week that they do not have to take a day off each week (usually they take Sunday off, but if they play Sunday, I thought they had to have a day off per the NCAA). Bo said something to the effect of, "We had 4 games in 10 days, so we had to give the guys Sunday and Monday off this week, because we played on Sunday and then needed Monday and Tuesday to get ready for Wednesday." So, apparently, they have to have days off, but they do not have to be one each week, just the equivalent.

Reminds me of those folks on Facebook that insisted automatic rifles were both legal and used in CT. Automatic rifle isn't even an accurate term, as rifles are not automatic. As I have mentioned many times, automatic weapons have been illegal since 1932, despite many wanting to pass a law against them again (heh).

They can't count to 43, but they have no doubt why it might be a fraction of a degree warmer cooler than it was a century ago. They should stick to property damage (and justifying it).

Gamel to miss entire season, torn ACL.

Incredibly bad luck for Mat. One has to wonder if the knee never healed properly or they somehow "missed" something, as he reported pain before he redid it.

ADDED: No real options left on the FA market, that would like to play for a month and then morph into a bench role...though Carlos Lee is just familiar enough to throw out there. My guess is, Doug will bring in a AAA vet with little or no big league experience, kind of a poor man's Travis Ishikawa. Hunter Morris, who does not have to be added to the 40 man until the offseason, may be considered as well.

ADDED 2: I kind of forgot about Taylor Green, who is kind of a poor man's Gamel. Because of that, I would look for Doug to try and find a RH hitting 1B to bring in, preferably one who can also play other positions. That said, that might be asking a lot now that camps have opened.

Feels so warm out today, 36 right now.  Back to the cold stuff tomorrow.

I always like Accuweather, mainly for their easy to read graphics and easy to use site. They also provide chuckles, because they often do not update their web site all day. Right now, it says it's 36 (updated automatically I'm sure), with a predicted high of 35. Often, it will say an inch of snow expected, and a glance will tell you 3-4 have already fallen.

I stopped at my credit union today, and then went to Pick n Save, and their bank inside the store was closed.

I went to the library to pick up some books I had on hold, and their door was locked, but the gal was sitting at the desk. She came over and opened the door, saying something about it not unlocking sometimes (I assume she is alone and locks it when she goes to lunch or to the bathroom). I went over and got my books, and she came back and used the key on the door.

I asked her if the village offices were open, and she said she didn't know. I went over and tried to pay my "dog tax" (also known as free cash for them)...but they don't take credit cards (solidly entrenched in 1975, customer service be damned).

Hart offers to have Gamel move in, get him help getting around.

Compared to what many go through, Mat's problems seem kind of lame, but he was as good as it gets in the minors, and has been blocked because of Prince, Ryan, Corey, and an inability to play 3B at a mediocre level. He could easily have 3-4 years of major league service in and have signed a $25-30M extension. Good health and opportunity are certainly keys to success.
