I just had an email ask me if I knew one of the casual blogs blessed us with a count of the Brewers' all tinme HBP's...they've had 2000 you know.

No I did not.

And that's why we call them casual.

Scoring eight runs will mask many problems, but the truth is, they just were fortunate bloopers fell in and the ball found holes.

Yo managed to get 17 outs in 112 pitches, and gave up 5 runs.

The bullpen got 10 outs and didn't allow a baserunner, in 35 pitches.

Because of the team's lack of success, no one has bothered saying it, but Doug's job of rebuilding the bullpen from almost scratch is type of things they write books about if he was a big market GM and the team was a contender. Of course, 1/3rd of the season does not a season make.

Years ago, I said Laynce Nix might have a decent career in the majors because he can play all three OF spots pretty well, and hits LH with some power.

That might well end up being my most accurate prediction ever.

5/31/2013 01:55:00 PM

(5/31/2013 01:54:00 PM) - Al

In the past few days, I've received several emails wondering if some changes may be upcoming. Hey, I don't know. I think Mark A and the braintrust are still waiting for the inevitable "regression to the norm" which Mark even spoke of when he was on TV.

However, at some point, changes will occur...don't forget what Doug said when he let Macha go by not just letting his contract end, "We just didn't win." Of course, looking back, they won 80 and 78 games, less than they hoped, but almost exactly what you'd expect when injuries and ineffectiveness hits a team that had the potential to win 85 games if things broke perfectly.

Bad stretches happen to every team, that's why the silly cries of "collapse" that hit every September show ignorance. Thinking a team did poorly when they finish 5-12 is laughable, because most every club has a couple stretches like that, even the good ones.

We're probably seeing a combo platter of bad luck; guys playing while injured and, predictably, not performing up to career numbers, and others simply slumping or aging badly (we won't know the answer to that until 2-3 more seasons pass). They've scored 90 runs in May, and given up 143...when you're outscored by just under two runs a game, you're not going to have much success....that said, the math says they should have 8 victories...3 more than they have.

Add three wins, they're 7-10 days away from .500, playing well and getting some breaks.  As of now, they're a three week stretch away from being on the fringe. We pretty much know what the future will bring...they publicly stated they were going to go through the rotation one more time, which not coincidentally, brings them to the homestand. I wonder if Gallardo and Lohse are healthy. Peralta, Fiers, and Estrada have been up and down, though Marco has kept them in almost every game and eaten innings. There's little doubt SP's have been very weak.

The best minor league options, other than the rehabbing Narveson, are both at AA, Pena and Nelson. Ariel has been unhittable after a poor April, and Jimmy has been solid all year. JN is not on the 40, and like Hunter Morris, doesn't have to be until after the campaign. Barring a hot stretch, that becomes unimportant, because while roster spots #35-40 have potential to be role players, the embarrassment of  big league losses will far outweigh that.

As for the position players, many are probably banged up, and while able to play, will be hard pressed to match past production. Braun and Ramirez are obvious, and others would not surprise any of us.

Bright spots? Well, though both are probably correctly placed as reserved, Bianchi and Schafer have provided sparks and performed admirably. Gomez has continued his growth (as I have said often, rushing a guy at 22 and proclaiming him a bust at 24 is both common and ridiculous in pro sports), and Segura, if healthy, might be a decade long answer, an incredible return for two months (a dozen starts) of Greinke. Aoki continues to overachieve, though his age and build requires him to get frequent rest.

We all know that at some point, Doug and Mark will sit down and probably at least listen to offers for FA to be's...Hart especially, as they have shown no inclination to sign him long term, despite him saying he'd love to do so. There's really no other names that jump out that would bring back anything of note...Ramirez and Weeks are both FA's after '14, but are both owed a lot; Aramis has been playing on one leg, and Rickie has had a poor first third of the campaign, though better than last year, when he returned to normal when summer hit.

Some bullpen arms would have value, though it's rare teams overpay for them. The one I would expect to hear rumors about? Axford, who seems to have found his dominant stuff, and while arby eligible, can easily be let go if he struggles. No guaranteed money after the current campaign makes a player worth a lot.

5/31/2013 01:54:00 PM

(5/31/2013 12:48:00 PM) - Al

If you just graduated from college (or high school), you might need this list.

I chuckled several times, because at the place I was laid off from last year, I was told several times to not worry about stuff when I asked about them.

{On a related note, a guy who was laid off before me and later rehired was let go this past week. He facebooked out the reason..."they told me they did not think I was happy." Of course, could it be related to the fact he's about to have a child? Sure it could, as their insurance cost would likely rise.}

As I figured out later, whenever I got a "don't worry about it" response, those were issues that were causing them great problems and no one could figure out how to fix. Me bringing them up irritated them, especially because the answer was "the owner wants to do it like that."

(5/30/2013 06:38:00 PM) - Al

Going to do some research tomorrow and try to find a link between the six clubs who won more games than they "should" have based on run differential. I noted that 5 of the 6 had a very good record in one run games, and the 6th, the 2010 Pirates, were such a crappy team, their mark of 20-24 in one run affairs was far better than their 39-79 mark in games decided by two or more runs. However, that to me seems more like a result of something else, rather than an actual reason.

Ideas? As I have discussed, a very good bullpen would be my first prediction, though I bet there are dozens of teams with great relief corps that did not win more than expected. Or is it simply good fortune? No correlation would seem to indicate that. I'll try and get that up before the workday ends tomorrow, as I have my morning booked.

Royals name George Brett hitting coach.

I bet the phrase, "Geez, just hit it," will be said often.

I don't know much about KC, except that they traded away the best hitting prospect in baseball and they play in a pitcher's park. Add that to an impatient front office looking to save their jobs and rushing kids to the bigs because of it, I wish them a lot of luck.

EDIT: KC was actually 9th in runs scored on the road in the AL, just below average.

(5/29/2013 02:30:00 PM) - Al

This occurred to me last night, and I can't believe no one has ever done this comparison before. That said, I do think off the curve, that's why I type up stuff like this, and others inform you how long it took someone to round the bases and/or a lengthy diatribe about the Brewers' new beer. Of course, they do have every right to do so, but, it also gives me the rightly deserved opportunity to mock.

Segura, 20, A---.365/.464, 829 OPS
Gennett, 20, A--..354/.463, 817

Segura, 21, A+--.337/.422, 759
Gennett, 21, A+-.334/.406, 740

Segura, 22, AA--.358/.413, 771
Gennett, 22, AA-.330/.385, 715

{In fairness to Scooter, Jean played his AA ball in the far more hitter friendly Texas League, while SG was in the pitcher friendly Southern League circuit.}

So, what does this mean...nothing. Well, it means that they have had similar production at the same age and level in the minors. Does it mean Scooter will breakout in the majors as Segura

Heck, not to bring you down, but Jean is extremely unlikely to hit long term like Jean has in his first 210 PA's of 2013. Segura is not going to continue to have a .395 BAbip (.300 is about league average, and even a guy that smacks the ball like Braun has a .341 career BAbip). .395 is pretty much unsustainable, even with his speed. I said the same thing about Gomez a couple weeks ago, and sure enough, we've seen the expected drop since.

It's just math.

The irony here is simple...Jean was a lot like Scooter in the minors...they didn't walk a lot, they don't have a lot of power, their main skill was singling the other team to death. Their overall numbers are amazingly similar. Segura's been slightly better at each level, which is probably directly related to his superior speed, or because of his lack of a platoon split (or both).

One final thing, the much defensively maligned Gennett has almost the exact same fielding percentage in the minors as Segura did...who as we have all seen, is a very solid defender. Minor league error totals are always high, due to poor field conditions and official scorers that delight in knocking spoiled kids down a notch, as they proudly say things like "back in my day" and "I almost kissed a girl once."

I can only hope Scooter continues to develop as I've been his loudest fan. That said, as I mentioned above, their stat lines being so close may not have any bearing, as Gennett might never have any success in the majors. That said, I continue to like his chances. As my mantra has been, all he does is hit...that's what they were saying about Segura last year at this time.

One thing that is rarely mentioned, but I admit, I'm enough of a nerd to have thought about often...Hunter Morris and Scooter Gennett are both playing solidly at AAA Nashville.

The way they perform may well be directly related to whether or not the Brewers offer an extension to Corey Hart, and how they go forward with Rickie Weeks. One thing to keep in mind, while both are lefty hitters, neither has shown the ability to hit LHP, though admittedly, that is an acquired skill, as players see few quality LHP's in amateur ball.

Having a RH hitting veteran in reserve would be a good idea anyway, if the Crew decides to go with a youngster. Bianchi, who also has the ability to play a passable SS, would be a nice fit, in my opinion, at 2B. A RH hitting 1B, who can also play 3B or corner OF, in theory, shouldn't be difficult to find either.

There is plenty of time to right the ship. However, as I pointed out, SP's are a tough area to improve, as help will almost certainly have to come from within. Also, not only are they giving up too many runs, they aren't going deep enough into games. Heat up by 17 with 3 minutes left...and the game hasn't been as close as the score indicates.

Bucks seem to be down to three. I know nothing of Clifford, though he has his fans in the league.

I'd be fine with any of them. I love the way the Hawks utilized the 3 under Drew, but I do not know if that was a pattern or not.

ADDED: ATL shot the 4th most 3's last season, 10th and 16th the years before that.

Shocked that the TNT pre game seems to be saying they like the Pacers to defeat the Heat.

I thought IND would win a game, maybe two, but thus far, MIA has shot miserably from three, and that seems like a blip rather than a credit to the Pacers.

I agree completely, though I would exclude the defense from the across the board 5% cut.

I might go right to 10%, and then follow it up with 1% reductions every year. I'm sure there will be some who insist they can't cut anymore, and that's how you know who you have to replace.

Watched Click last night, I saw it right after it came out, and I recall it having funny moments, but being disappointed. I was amazed last night that the first half hour was very good, as was the ending, the last 10-15 minutes. But, that middle section was painfully bad, depressingly so. It was one of those that you wonder how, at some point, someone didn't say, "Wow, we gotta punch this up a bit," as even some throwaway one liners would have helped immensely.

5/26/2013 05:04:00 PM

(5/26/2013 04:49:00 PM) - Al

The worst thing about having the starting pitching dragging the team down is it is by far the most difficult area to change and improve. You can make some phone calls and call up some veteran AAA arms (Hand being a fine example, Mike McClendon being another from the past) to solidify the bullpen.

No such luck with the rotation. As pointed out, eventually, that heavy workload will drag the bullpen down as well.

Quick note about the relief corps, while they are 7th in the NL (of 15), but they are way above average. The bullpen ERA is 3.18, while ATL is best with 2.74, the Mets are worst with 4.84, while average is 3.73.

Another thing to keep in mind about those defensive shifts is that they are free. It costs money to draft, develop, and sign players. It costs nothing to position players differently.

Roenicke and Melvin met for nearly an hour this morning to talk through pitching issues, etc. RRR's comments will be in the notebook.--Adam,

This sounds bad, as Hand has already replaced Henderson, so there's nothing to discuss there. Tuesday and Thursday SP's are both listed as TBA, so Lohse may be missing more than a single start. If Lohse has to be DL'd, looking at the current staff, you'd have both Figaro and Fiers in the rotation, and yet another arm coming up, though AA prospect Ariel Pena would be considered as well.

Henderson DL'd, another move to come tomorrow.

This usually means there is some "other" consideration, possibly a waiver claim, or another injury they are not making public. Derek Lowe was DFA'd the other day, and there may well be another pitcher out there the Crew is looking to make a claim on or an offer to.

ADDED: The Nats DFA'd Yunesky Maya today, and he's a former Cuban refugee with tons of AAA SP experience. Low ceiling, but if they're looking for 5-6 innings and to be in the game at that point, he might be their best bet.

ADDED 2: Maya is owed $2M this season, so he is all but certain to clear waivers and go down to AAA.

I felt bad yesterday, as when I left Wal Mart, the guy offered me a poppy...I declined.

Why, you ask?

1. Well, I headed home, so no one would have seen it anyway, except that persistent mob of college women who follow me around everywhere. They may cry themselves to sleep, but I'm taken.

2. Last year, I gave the guy a dollar or two, and he gave me a poppy. I was working at the little family owned retailer I would get laid off from right after Labor Day. I put the poppy in my pocket and wore it all day, my boss even commented everyone used to do that, and now, no one did.

I went home, shirt got washed...poppy still in there. Whole shirt turned light pink. Rewashed. Nothing. Rewashed with bleach...nothing. Finally, with help from the internet, soaked it for a couple days in bleach water, then washed it...finally got it out.

Even though my shirt was black this year, I wanted no part of it.

Asked if John Axford will be part of the closer rotation, Roenicke said, "I don't know. I like what we're doing with Ax. I'd like to continue to do it in that way."--JS

No one wants to say it, but it seems the possibility that Axford may try to do too much or overthrow in the closer's role has been discussed.

(5/24/2013 10:38:00 PM) - Al

Two quick thoughts...

1. The game is mighty easy when your SP goes 7 and gives up 1.

2. You know the bullpen has pitched well when Ron could have easily went with any of three relievers after Henderson was injured...KRod, Axford, or Badenhop. Heck, Gorzelanny would have been a 4th option had he went on a rehab or seen any live action.

5/24/2013 10:38:00 PM

(5/24/2013 10:14:00 PM) - Al

Sadly, I'd say Henderson is almost certain to go on the DL. With Fiers going tomorrow, Figaro starting Tuesday, and Lohse out, they'll probably have another pitcher on the way to MIL in an hour.

Barring a pickup of some sort, Jesus Sanchez is on the 40, and Donovan Hand has continued pitching well after losing the final roster spot to Alfredo, and Rob Wooten has done OK as the closer. A 40 man spot would have to be cleared, I assume by removing Lalli, if they bring up anyone except Sanchez.

If you're looking for a longshot, Ariel Pena is on the 40 and pitching lights out in Huntsville, 1.14 ERA in his last four starts, 8 BB's and 28 K's in 23 2/3 IP.

EDIT: Never mind, Pena is throwing tonight. He might be the next in line if they need a SP.

Braddock just completely fell apart after his sleeping disorder/mental issues came about. Still troubled, it would seem.

Needless to say, when a player hits the DL with a "personal problem," it's a gigantic red flag. People act like I'm an incredible meanie for suggesting the Greinke deal was a huge risk not just because he's a pitcher, but because of his issues with anxiety and the like. It's just one more thing, and Braddock went from good to worthless pretty much overnight.  When you're talking about guaranteeing someone $150M, it's tough to ignore.

Brewers have not formally made a move yet, but sounds like Hiram Burgos is headed back to Triple-A today when Gorzelanny comes off the DL.--Adam,

Figaro would be the obvious choice to take Burgos' rotation spot, though he's not likely to go 5.

As I said the other day, major league SP's do not have a pair of starts of three innings or less in a two week span. His results say he is better placed in AAA, and he need to go down and work on location and the mental game, in which he appears extremely weak, though that is far from unusual for a 23 year old.

EDIT: Burgos goes on the 15 day DL with fancy words for a tired arm. I know full well there's no way the Crew would have him pitching if he said he was less than 100%, so this reeks of Hiram claiming arm trouble after his last terrible outing. We'll see what is said later by the braintrust.

I admit, I find it very funny that the new MLS team in NY has seemingly no idea where they will play the first couple seasons (although maybe they do, and just haven't made it public).

I'm surprised Columbia, hardly a football powerhouse, has a 17K seat football stadium in the heart of Manhattan. Common sense would tell you that a quick expansion to 25-30K seats with Yankees/Man City money would be a perfect solution, and that's exactly why it will never happen.

Fiers and Figaro should be licking their chops. 40% of the rotation has a 6.44 or 6.45 ERA, and in doing so, have shown all the unfortunate attributes of youth; inconsistency and immaturity. Getting hit is one thing, but being a head case in so doing is another.

At this time, both would probably be "correctly placed" in AAA. However, you have to have a better option to take the mound every 5th day. That's why both Mike and Alfredo have to be excited.

One more note, the Crew has three relievers pitching well in Nashville, and Gorzelanny is set to return soon. One would have to assume one of the youngsters will go down to make room for Tom.

Nice to see Caleb Gindl has his OPS back up to 800, and more realistically, about 900 vs RHP. I'm not sure where he fits in with three solid OF's and a nice 4th OF in Schafer, but the fact the braintrust has him playing CF shows they see him as a future bench contributor.

Wily and Hiram should be extremely thankful their replacement options have been ineffective or are injured. It's one thing to go 5-6 innings and give up 4-5 runs, but 7 outs and 5 outs is unacceptable. Any major league pitcher should be able to get through the lineup a couple times with just their fastball, moving it up and down, in and out. We're not talking about throwing zeroes on the board, but just limiting the damage.

I pointed out a week or two ago how Gonzalez's ERA was under 1 since Opening Day. Meanwhile, the casuals were quoting tiny samples of him versus LH hitters this year.

Ever since, all you hear is, "Gonzalez is really pitching well lately."

Yeah, since, you know, game two.

Axford is hitting 97-98 regularly, just like that. It's just hard to believe.

Yankees and Man City will own the MLS expansion team that begins play in '15.

I would assume that will mean at least a game or two will be played in Yankee Stadium, at some point.

ADDED: Since there's no stadium in place, no plans, and no land purchased, the word is the new team will need to play in a temporary home for 2-3 seasons...Yankee Stadium is being mentioned rather prominently, to say the least.

Tell you what, I've been saying the past couple years that the MLS is a huge success story that no one bothers reporting. The Yankees, a virtual printing press, wants to be involved, is proof of that.

Stan Van Gundy will not coach next season, or at least he says he will not.

Reports say they are in no hurry, and will do a second set of interviews. As I have said, they seem to be looking for a Skiles' clone, and Scott is out interviewing, said to be at the top of the Nets' list. He's probably looking for a team that's "close," as Sloan is, but, to be blunt, those 45-50 win teams on the brink of a title are rarely looking for a new coach...though in today's NBA, maybe not.

The BTN men's basketball conference ratings were up 27% from last season.

Most ratings are going down every year. The exception is live sports, which is why the TV rights continue to be so high.

I'm flabbergasted so many folks fail to understand this, but then again, many folks wake up every morning and are trained to think capitalism doesn't work anymore.

It's also why there is so little streaming of live events, as those networks are promised an exclusive showing. That will change as time goes on, but rarely for free. People fail to "get it," as they can't figure out why they can't watch the Brewers on MLBtv in WI. It's just free market economics...many people keep cable solely for the Badgers, Bucks, and Brewers.

RECAP of 2013 first 42 games

runs produced--6th in NL, 4.21 runs per game
runs allowed:---15th in NL, 4.93 runs per game

177 runs scored, 207 runs allowed, expected record 18-24, actual record 17-25

SP ERA--5.17, 15th in NL, have averaged 5.69 IP/S
RP ERA--3.51, 8th in NL

.320 OBP, 6th in NL
.422 SLG, 2nd in NL
742 OPS, 2nd in OPS

5-10 in games started by Peralta, Fiers, and Burgos, with a 6.44 ERA. One start out of 15 in which the SP went 7+ IP. Of course, Wily and Hiram have had some very solid efforts, but, as is the case with young pitching, they tend to be very inconsistent. As is you need proof, Tyler Thornburg, who I keep pigeonholing into a future relief role because he's 5-10, is 0-5 with a 6.80 Nashville. However, if you remove Burgos' start in which the Crew "punted" due to a short bullpen, it's actually 5.31, not much higher than the overall SP ERA. They haven't helped, and they have helped to wear out the 'pen...but they haven't been much worse than Yo, Marco, and Kyle, overall.

One thing to remember is that a ton of casuals insisted Lohse would not be any better than the young SP's...needless to say, they have got to the point where you can pretty much just assume they will be incorrect, based on prior experience.

We might see some improvement from 1B (if Corey returns), 2B, and C, however, we'll probably see falloff from SS, CF, and RF. I would guess the offense will be relatively constant. Ditto for the relief pitching...barring injuries, of course.

The rotation is the key to the improvement we hope will come.  They're simply giving up too many runs, and getting an extra out or two would be preferred as well . While the defense is probably about average (Weeks and Ramirez have both had issues, though Gomez, Segura, and Aoki have been plus), and the bullpen solid, despite heavy usage and Axford's inconsistency; the key remains the five guys who take the mound every night to begin the game.

Actually, there's something to be said for being a big fish in a small pond. And, let's be honest, almost everyone reading this would give anything to have one of the state schools want them to play a sport for them, and the WIAC is D3.

"One thing we don't hide is: 'Yeah, we're conservative—free-market, free-enterprise, full-spectrum conservative,'" Ryun told Mother Jones magazine last year.

Eight months passed without word from the agency about the group's application, Ryun said. In February 2012, Ryun's attorney contacted the IRS to ask if it needed more information to secure its nonprofit status as a 501(c)3 organization. According to Ryun, the IRS told him that the application was being processed by the agency's office in Cincinnati, Ohio—the same one currently facing scrutiny for targeting conservative groups—and to check back in two months.

As directed, Ryun followed up with the IRS in April 2012, and was told that Media Trackers' application was still under review.

When September 2012 arrived with still no word from the IRS, Ryun determined that Media Trackers would likely never obtain standalone nonprofit status, and he tried a new approach: He applied for permanent nonprofit status for a separate group called Greenhouse Solutions, a pre-existing organization that was reaching the end of its determination period.

The IRS approved Greenhouse Solutions' request for permanent nonprofit status in three weeks.--Yahoo

Brewers will keep an extra pitcher due to heavy workload, Lalli expected to go down when KRod activated, either tonight or tomorrow.

(5/15/2013 03:55:00 PM) - Al

KRod on his way back up to majors. Unsure if he'll be active tonight, or if he'll still be on a minor league roster tonight.

I was pondering this morning on my drive about this...$2M (prorated, about $1.5M) is not money to be thrown around foolishly...but in reality, the minimum over about 75% of the campaign is about $375K. Not saying $1M is "gambling money" in MLB, but, let's be honest, it's a rather minimal risk.

Barring injury, I'd say Fiers will head back to A ball or AAA, depending on his mom's health. Axford or Lalli would also be possibilities. I think Axford is about 80%, but a week or two to clear his head and maybe pitch on a set schedule in a no stress setting might be just what he needs. Who knows, maybe another set of eyes will spot something as well, as if it is mechanical, it's probably exceedingly minute.

Just 16% of Likely U.S. Voters believe the IRS investigations of these groups were a coincidence, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Fifty-seven percent (57%) think the investigations were politically motivated. Twenty-seven percent (27%) are not sure.

Fifty-five percent (55%) think it is at least somewhat likely that President Obama or his top aides were aware that Tea Party and other conservative groups were targeted by the IRS.

Thirty-four percent (34%) consider that unlikely. This includes 36% who believe it is Very Likely the president or his top aides knew of the investigations and 13% who feel it is Not At All Likely. Eleven percent (11%) are undecided.--Rasmussen

For those wondering about KRod, he pitched in front of Doug again today, and looked pretty good. I'm not sure whose place he would take, Fiers would be likely I suppose. Doug said they might ask for more time as well.
