1. MLS all star game is on ESPN2 during the delay.

2. Figaro should be able to eat most of the remaining innings.

Brewers report that Mark Rogers (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment tonight with rookie Arizona.--Adam,

His place on the 40 man roster could be in play...if not, he would be a FA, and with his velocity, be a popular target in the offseason.

(7/31/2013 05:38:00 PM) - Al

The administration could not care less about the EMP threat...they're just hoping the impending economic meltdown holds off until 2017.

If you think tax and spend, anti capitalism measures fail in the short term, wait until you see eight years of it.

7/31/2013 05:38:00 PM

(7/31/2013 04:21:00 PM) - Al

I was surprised by how few deals took place, and to be honest, much of it is probably directly related to the Segura deal last year...teams don't want lose youngsters who can contribute for six plus years for two months of a solid player.

7/31/2013 04:21:00 PM

(7/31/2013 04:02:00 PM) - Al

Many teams want to evaluate Ramirez when/if he returns healthy. 3B are in short supply, as is RH power. An August trade is very possible if he comes back effective and able to play 5-6 days a week.

7/31/2013 04:02:00 PM

(7/31/2013 03:52:00 PM) - Al

Justin Maxwell is a lefty masher, but so are a dozen guys in AAA. Kyle Smith is a true SP prospect. Royals are under .500.

Not a fan of that deal at all.

7/31/2013 03:52:00 PM

(7/31/2013 03:32:00 PM) - Al

Orioles make biggest trade, get Norris.

Nothing else much happened. Even reliever stayed put. Doug was wise to move KRod before he had a bad outing or two.

7/31/2013 03:32:00 PM

(7/31/2013 03:25:00 PM) - Al

We'll see if Scooter remains for the weekend series, or if he was the only body they could get to Wrigley before tonight's game. With three SP's in the rotation that struggle to go more than 5 (6 at most), an 8th arm might be more valuable.

7/31/2013 03:25:00 PM

(7/31/2013 01:25:00 PM) - Al

I have to go into the office to turn in business, so I'll be out until the deadline. Back soon.

(7/31/2013 12:23:00 PM) - Al

Dodgers Joc Pederson (teams best OF prospect) is not in AA lineup for Chattanooga today...could the Dodgers have ONE more big move left?

Looking for a reliever, per rumors. I'd give Henderson and a piece to get Pederson, who is just a notch below Wil Myers on the prospect scale. Sadly, they have far bigger names in mind.

7/31/2013 12:23:00 PM

(7/31/2013 11:49:00 AM) - Al

Brewers not involved in trade talks.

That said, it only takes one. Gonzalez has pitched well the last couple days, and Lohse/Aoki should be in discussions, but are not for some reason.

Johnny Hellweg logs 6 scoreless innings tonight for his eighth consecutive quality start. The hurler has not allowed an ER in 24 innings.--Sounds

Confidence and better luck than when he was up. He'll be back.

7/30/2013 11:22:00 PM

(7/30/2013 09:03:00 PM) - Al

Bud Norris has been traded. If it's to BOS, the Sox just pulled two top prospects from games in the minors.

(7/30/2013 08:24:00 PM) - Al

Scooter can catch the ball too.

7/30/2013 08:24:00 PM

(7/30/2013 08:18:00 PM) - Al

E-mail asks if Gennett can just stay up to replace Yo...he can, but technically, Scooter has to be sent down right after the current game, as the roster goes back to 25.

If they choose to put Yo on the DL (and likely put Tyler into the rotation), they may call up another arm, as Hand/Tom G/Thornburg all struggle to go more than 5 IP. If not, they could have Gennett stick around for tomorrow, and then alter things for Friday.

7/30/2013 08:18:00 PM

(7/30/2013 07:35:00 PM) - Al

This sounds mean, but it's economically brilliant, especially since Hawaii is an island, you know.

It's a fact that cities that "take it easy" on homeless folks have far more petty crime and homeless. Portland is a hole, people avoid parks because that's where they congregate.

(7/30/2013 05:25:00 PM) - Al

Curious what happens with Kravtsov/Middleton. Puts Bucks at 16 roster spots including Wolters. 2-for-1 deal to net a better SF would be nice.--BrewHoop

My math was correct. I think they are still well under the cap, so they can also pick up salary.

7/30/2013 05:25:00 PM

(7/30/2013 05:06:00 PM) - Al

Unless I'm misreading something, that gives the Bucks 15 guaranteed contracts for the coming season, with 2nd round pick Nate Wolters unsigned.

(7/30/2013 04:56:00 PM) - Al

(7/30/2013 04:27:00 PM) - Al

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Axford is simply suffering a bit of dead arm, as he's on pace for 75 games. That's a lot of up and down, starts and stops. Velocity being down 3-5 mph is a huge red flag as is leaving the breaking ball up. It also likely eliminates any interest in him, though he is likely to pass through waivers in August.

7/30/2013 04:27:00 PM

(7/30/2013 03:05:00 PM) - Al

I just got home from an appointment, so I'm way behind in the game. Try to safely check MLBTR. Stopped at the Evil Empire to pick up a few things (forgot butter), but you'll be happy to know they had Twinkies in, and the Rambling son and I have each tried one. They do taste slightly different, and we both agree the consistency is less fluffy.

I think they'll be OK though.

Forgot to type that Thornburg will start one of the games and Scooter was called up to be the 26th man, and will start one of the games at 2B. Gennett has to go back down after the 2nd game, barring an injury (not sure about a trade). With the day off Thursday, I guess they figured they could get by. It helped tonight, as only Mike, Brandon, and Rob had to pitch.

I was driving home during the pregame show on radio, and Ron said Lucroy might play 1B in the game he doesn't catch Tuesday, or maybe on Wednesday, as Peralta pitches, so Marty will catch him.

7/29/2013 10:25:00 PM

(7/29/2013 10:05:00 PM) - Al

I don't think I've ever seen that before, Crew up 3-0, Henderson up for the save, Badenhop up for the nonsave...Weeks gets a base hit, goes up 5-0, both sit down, Wooten gets up.

$10 voucher for food, drinks, or souvenirs for every game in August.

Not sure if they are getting a "deal" from Sportservice or not, and I'm sure many will go unused, but regardless, this is a $2-3M payback to the fans. Note, however, that it cannot be spent on 2014 tickets, so the hit (if any) will be limited to this season. Usually with coupons like this, people spend way more, but since we're talking food eligible, it's easy to limit your spending to $10-15.

The thing I especially like is that most, probably 80-90% of the money, will go to people who already had their tickets purchased, including many season ticket holders. It also gives incentives to buy tiks, so it is a nearly perfect program. And by the sounds of it, the first of several.

No individual raindrop ever considers itself responsible for the flood.--Anonymous

This reminds me of Phil Gramm's famous Dickey Flatt test, in which he explained that every program has merits, but he often chose to vote against them, because hard working business owners like Mr. Flatt shouldn't have to pay taxes for a good idea, but only for what was absolutely necessary.

Dave Obey, who never met a bloated spending package he didn't love and vote for, was caught being honest when asked if the stimulus had a lot of waste in it. His reply, "So?" was followed shortly thereafter by an unrelated statement explaining he was going to retire and not run anymore.

It's easy to do when the debt is $17T, and the deficit is $1T (both going up at a shockingly fast pace, because the administration shares Obey's fiscal recklessness). That's why every bill is important, and every dollar has to be accounted for.

That's why the last 4.5 years have been such a failure, and why the next 3.5 will be too. Doubling down on failed policy is not the answer. But, it's all they know.

(7/28/2013 09:50:00 PM) - Al

Remember a week ago, the Phillies were looking to buy...

I think it's silly to talk of pushing back the deadline, as many players are moved in August anyway. Most of the time, it's obvious what teams are contenders by 7/31, though teams, like MIL in '12, get hot late and sneak into contention. Many of the teams "on the fence" are not really in contention (Angels, Royals, Nats, Rockies to name a few), but are afraid to say that, much like the Seligs were.

I feel the same way I always have...I'd be a lot more likely to add talent to try and win in the playoffs than I would to try and make the playoffs. The wildcards are a crapshoot within a crapshoot, as the first game is 50/50, and then puts you at a huge disadvantage in the divisional up 6 or 6.5 years of a top prospect to "sneak in" makes less sense than ever to me. Also, I'm surprised so few teams seem to recognize what has worked the past few seasons...SL added a ton of relievers (some weak SP's) and effectively eliminated the bottom of the rotation. When the Brewers added Sabathia, they didn't add a weak SP, they added a top SP. You don't need five SP's in the playoffs, and many teams barely need five in September, with the days off. This is why I don't understand the lack of Lohse in conversations.

7/28/2013 09:50:00 PM

(7/28/2013 09:28:00 PM) - Al

Gonzalez with two poor outings before the deadline, and Axford has a pair of poor Coors outings before the deadline. Value likely minimal, though John was pretty much a one pitch pitcher in the altitude. Gonzalez could easily be dealt in August, and Axford may as well.

Yo is very unlikely to be dealt, and while we've heard minor rumblings about Lohse, I doubt it. Weeks and Aoki pop up every once in a while, but mainly in "could be brought up later" mentions. Ramirez, if healthy, is probably the best 3B and RH power bat on the market, and will easily clear waivers in August (the Crew would happily let him go if claimed, owed $16M in '14).

Dem lies about GOP health plan idea.

Last winter, the Rambling son and myself went to a speaking engagement by a WW2 veteran who was one of the Band of Brothers that the HBO miniseries was about. He was asked about these senseless restrictions, and he could barely contain his disgust as he muttered about "how the enemy takes advantage of stuff like this...if you can't shoot them in a church, you can bet they'll hide in a church." He finished with a statement that brought the audience to their feet, "War is hell. Our only job was to shoot faster than they did, and let God sort it out."

This is the type of war strategy from those who get upset when you pee on a dead enemy, but totally understand and give a pass to them when they're trying to shoot the good guys.

It was raining harder in the top of the ninth than in the bottom of the ninth, when they called for the tarp.--Brian Anderson

It rained the entire game, pouring much of the way. Delaying it three outs from the possible conclusion just seems like a perfect men in blue idea...totally lacking in common sense, head shakingly shortsighted. They just don't get it, as they go out of their way to make themselves the center of attention, and then defensively defend whatever painfully idiotic choice they made.

Yearly visit to the vet today for vaccines, heartworm/lyme test, and heartworm meds. The cat two ahead of us was 15, the dog just ahead of us was 16, and the Rambling dog edged them out, being 17. Had a terrible time finding blood in his veins (what the heck is in there then?), and as me and the assistant held him for dear life, a bit tighter each time, I became aware I was touching the young lady's side/tummy area, which seemed to bother me more than her, luckily.

All tests were negative, and they gave us a sample of the newest flea/tick med on the market, which costs $15 a dose (I have to assume it comes with dinner and a show). Back when he got lyme, we were using Hartz, which they proudly told me "doesn't really work." So, we upgraded to Frontline, which the gal today said "well, they can bite before it kills them." I'm not sure if the new one is so strong they keel over dead just from a single whiff, much like a cologne I was once gifted, or what.

All the staff commented how good he looked for 17, including one saying how his eyes were clear...they've looked glassy to me for 2-3 years, and he can't see much more right in front of him. I guess they are so used to seeing them totally blind, anything better is "good."

With Neal added, here's how they compare on 3 point FG's made and 3 point FG percentage:

Last year--------------7.3 3FG/G, ranked 13th of 30
'13-14 roster last year-9.7 3FG/G, would rank 3rd of 30

Jennings--2.2, 37.5%
Ersan-----1.3, 44.4
Mayo-----1.7, 40.7
Neal------1.3, 35.5
Ridnour---0.8, 31.1
Delfino----2.4, 37.5

Of course, no one has noticed how many 3's they have added, and the teams that finished 1/2 last year, the Knicks and Rockets, have lost several 3's since. Not sure if this has been a goal of Hammond or not, but as of this second, he may have the most 3 point shots made in the league on his roster.

I just did a quick math check, and SL is hitting .414 BAbip with RISP. Is that skill or luck...well, probably both, but even the best hitters in the game struggle to hit the ball hard enough to have a .350 BAbip, never mind .400+.

Better lucky than good.

Sources close to the process report Gary Neal deal with MIL will be for 2 years/$6.5 million.--ESPN

They may be one player away from a full roster, but while they are loaded with average and slightly above above average players, that may be good for 41 wins, more if Sanders and Henson develop as we all hope. They look to have very nice depth, assuming of course that Jennings ends up as the point guard.

However, suprisingly, the four man team of Jennings-Ellis-Dunleavy-Ilyasova scored a whopping 116.3 points per 100-possession -- that's a surprisingly big jump from how Milwaukee fares with Ellis (104.7 points per 100). Yes, yes, that four man combo played just 378 minutes together (the equivalent of around 8 games) but still, those numbers are mind blowing.--SB Nation

Be interesting to see their +/-, as none of the four are superb defenders. But, as I often point out, there's nothing wrong with outscoring the opponenet either.

Does it tell us anything that the Red Sox had three -- yep, three -- scouts watching Santana's most recent start Wednesday night? Well, it wasn't an accident. But here's our advice: Always beware of jumping to conclusions based on the occupants of the scout section on any given day.

"All I know," laughed one scout, "is that 12 teams were in Milwaukee to see K-Rod [Francisco Rodriguez] -- and the team that traded for him [Baltimore] wasn't one of them."--ESPN

I think a lot of scouts being in the stands is a classic case of "doing things the way they've always been done"...KRod had a 1 ERA and I'm sure you could watch every one of his outings on TV, if they wanted to ensure he wasn't giving up all line drives to OF's and the like.

I know a few years ago, the Crew stopped using advance scouts, instead, choosing to chart games on fact, this is why they were/are a leader/innovator in defensive shifts, while other teams had advance scouts at the games that were commenting on things like how fast players run off the field and if the guys in the bullpen are paying attention to the game. Then, a couple years ago, they began using an advance scout or two again, the first one was Chris Bosio.

The Bucks have signed Serbian free agent Miroslav Raduljica. The 7-1 center played professionally in the Ukraine last season.

Chose him over Ayon. If he plays for the Bucks (and not in Europe), and they end up signing their two draft picks and Jennings, that leaves them with 13 players. Probably short a combo guard (they are hoping for Gary Neal) and a swingman.

Halton down, Rob Wooten up. Going with an eight man bullpen, partially due to Yo's inability to go more than four today.

Casuals who insist a six man bullpen is doable look on and hope no one notices their level of ignorance.

Whether or not this means another trade is in the works, I don't know. However, if they do have something in the works for Axford, they will not be using him on short rest. Gonzalez gave up four today, but a team wanting him as a loogy could still make a deal, I suppose.

Hopefully, Sean will go down and get on base and smack the ball around. He has a nice swing, and could find a home as a 1B/LF/RF, especially since the Crew is lefty heavy for the most part in those areas. His ceiling isn't very high, but he's a better athlete than I thought, and RH power is a limited asset, always in demand. Good luck to him.

Gindl probably saved himself with some quality AB's the past week.

Wooten's ceiling is limited as well, but at this point, they need an arm. Sounds like they want to use Thornburg to start a game in the doubleheader next week, and will call up some bullpen help, hopefully.

Years ago, before the Rambling son was even born, we were visiting the Rambling wife's aunt and uncle in the Milwaukee area, and a bird was stuck in something, I can't recall if it was a feeder or just something on the house, like maybe a light. Her uncle and myself untangled the bird from the predicament, and wondered how such a thing could happen.

Fast forward to this morning. I was leaning on the deck, watching the Rambling dog wander aimlessly on his cable. I glanced over at the suet holder the Rambling son made a few months ago in the school forest. I was surprised to see a bird inside of the wire, upside down. I investigated, and his eyes were blinking, but he wasn't moving at all, having worked his way in so deep, I suppose, as the suet was about 75% gone. We have had baby/sick birds on the deck before (I still recall prying open the Rambling dog's mouth on one occasion and the bird flying away), but I wasn't sure if he was able to fly or not. I shut the patio door, took the suet holder off the metal pole and set it down on the patio. The bird wiggled and moved, but remained stuck. I moved it slightly, and the suet settled just enough to give the bird some wiggle room, and he quickly was gone, flying away. And, I didn't get scratched or bitten, by far the best news of the day.

Two previously available starting pitchers — Milwaukee Brewers righties Yovani Gallardo and Kyle Lohse — now figure to stay put. Both could have greater trade value in the offseason, when different dynamics will be in play.

At that point, Gallardo will have two years and $24.25 million left on his contract, Lohse two years and $22 million. Both of their average salaries will be lower than the amount of the qualifying offer, which is likely to be more than $14 million. And both will be more affordable than free agents like Santana, who likely will seek three-year deals at bigger numbers.--Rosenthal

Time will tell, of course. I think Doug us simply asking for historical value for Yo despite a down season, and for Kyle, despite the fact they just signed him. This time of year, everyone wants a "hot pitcher" or whatever. JS editorial board says the Crew should "get rid of" Braun, but does not explain how.

As pointed out in the comments, they would have two options, release him and owe him the money guaranteed to him, or trade him. You realize, of course, at least half the teams in baseball would offer him a contract for the minimum, leaving MIL to pay him for playing for someone else. You can argue a trade makes more sense, and it does, but given the amount owed to him, only a few teams would consider it, and the chance of a fair return is nearly nonexistent.

I would say this is a perfect example of finding out exactly how uneducated and unknowing the editorial board actually are...not to mention prone to knee jerk reactions.

I admit, the overreaction is breathtaking, even for the JS. Where was the outrage when they signed Mike Cameron? Of course, yes, I do realize they don't know who MC is.:)

(on Delmonico) Left-handed contact hitter. Best at 3B but has played 1B and even 2B. An athlete. Has a nice future as a full time 3B for Crew--Bernie Pleskoff, former MLB scout, now Rotowire contributor

I can't believe BAL gave up a true prospect for two months (30-35 innings) of Frankie. Doug outdid himself.

7/23/2013 10:29:00 PM

(7/23/2013 10:20:00 PM) - Al

Recap of Doug and KRod about the trade. Melvin, despite spending an entire game earlier this month at the hotel making phone calls, trying to drum up interest, always says others call him. Always good to hear a player say they are unhappy to be leaving MIL, however cliched or unlikely.

Position players? Aoki is the only one I can think of. If I was a contender, I'd really like Bianchi as a reserve SS/utility infielder, but I've said that for a year. I don't think Weeks is hitting enough, and Ramirez is hurt. I don't see Doug wanting to move anyone else, as they are cheap and under team control.

(7/23/2013 09:56:00 PM) - Al

Tyler Thornburg deserved better last inning, throwing four strikes to one batter and then allowing a base hit (great job blue!), but he's always struggled when facing the same hitter more than once. Some may not agree his future is as a reliever, but it likely is.

1st time facing batter in game--.278/.336
2nd/3rd time fac bat in game---408/.709

I'll be honest...I'm not sure how Inge has managed to stay in the game since he said he didn't want to catch anymore.

I guess he's a plus defender, but when you get out 70% of the time, as he has since 2009, he's not helping a team win, he's just making too many outs to do so.

As for the Brewers, I assume this makes Henderson the closer, with Axford/Gonzalez being used in the 7th/8th as needed.

Figaro pitched a rehab outing in Arizona yesterday, and if ready, will take that spot. If not, the often mentioned Jesus Sanchez is the best option in AAA, and is on the 40.

Delmonico has 83 walks in 563 career AB's, well over the 10% "standard" Beane used back in the day. That's 14.7%.

{And yes, I know it "should be" BB/PA, but Billy used AB's. I don't know why.}

Melvin also said he's "not motivated" to move either Yovani Gallardo or Kyle Lohse at this time. Has gotten multiple calls on Gallardo.--JS

Unlike KRod, he won't ask for "final bids"...though I'm not sure if Doug ever does that. Three AL teams were finalists for Frankie, made trade immediately when BAL agreed to move Delmonico.

Also, Nick just turned 21, though their age on July 1st is often used for "seasonal age."

Fangraphs with a report on Delmonico, who is the son of a coach and might have been a first round pick if not for bonus request and college commitment. He might move up quickly, but he's still not due until 2016, mid 2015 would be likely the earliest we'd see him.

3B was a gaping hole in the system, and it no longer is. For 64 games of Frankie, I am good with that.

7/23/2013 07:25:00 PM

(7/23/2013 07:19:00 PM) - Al

Sadly, not major league ready, but he's a nice young player...20, in A+ ball, lefty bat, and error count is not real high, good athlete, and at 6-1, 195, plenty of room to fill out. Nice power for a youngster too. This is his first year at 3B, played 1B last season.

Orioles fans seem to think he'll be a star. I see him more as a solid regular with patience and at least moderate power, but expectations need to be kept reasonable.--Sickels, who rated him 4th in the O's organization

Considering Doug got KRod for nothing, once again, he proves himself to be the king of the scrap heap pickups.

Of course, we do not know about LF yet, but if they call Davis up and then let Logan play versus LHP's, Khris should ask to return to Music City.

3B is a strange one too, in that Bianchi and Yuni both bat RH, but Jeff has never hit LHP at all.

Player reaction coming soon to the site but most surprising was from Gallardo, who was emphatic in his belief that Braun never took PEDs.--Adam,

Several players said there was no admittance of guilt, only that he had made an error.

Many seem to have jumped the gun on that. When the Rambling wife got home from VBS tonight, she asked if I thought he had just accepted the deal to put it behind him. I told her I'm sure he did something wrong or he would not have taken the suspension. That said, we'll see what "mistake" that is when he speaks.

7/22/2013 05:07:00 PM

(7/22/2013 05:04:00 PM) - Al

It's not really a 65 game suspension either, Braun would have probably taken at least a day off a week due to his thumb. He may even opt for other treatment now, surgery and other things may be considered.

7/22/2013 05:04:00 PM

(7/22/2013 04:55:00 PM) - Al

For Brewers, though, this is probably the best-case scenario. Won't miss any of 2014 season and Braun can rest thumb for remainder of '13.--JP Breen

I was just about to type nearly an identical paragraph. I thought I better quote it rather than be accused of plagiarism.

I'm willing to bet Ryan Braun gets a standing ovation at Miller Park on Opening Day next year.--Breen

I would agree, with scattered boobirds. Cards' fans never turned on McGwire, and Cubs' fans still love Sosa.

That said, Braun has a PR team that is, to be truthful, brilliant. He'll quickly get off the defensive and through the old media, work his way back into good graces. He has money, good looks, and is very well spoken. Let's not forget, he's only admitted to "mistakes"...that could mean anything.

Don't forget, Ray Lewis killed a guy. His bloody suit has never been found. They fawned all over this thug. They love a comeback.

7/22/2013 04:55:00 PM

(7/22/2013 04:44:00 PM) - Al

I realize now that I have made some mistakes. I am willing to accept the consequences of those actions.--Ryan Braun.

Be interesting to see what, if anything, Ryan admits to. I've made "mistakes" sitting on the toilet, so that means nothing. Did he take something knowingly, in a prescription, or what?

One also has to wonder if this will affect Doug's plans...he was already planning on selling...but, he also, in theory, does not have to worry about this carrying into next season.

I'm also stunned at how badly MLB's PR staff has stumbled over this, seemingly not able to admit that they lost and simply fix the mistakes. Now, they've continued to have leaks and seem to be trying to prove their case in the old fans ignore it and wish it would just go away.

It does my heart good. The fact that the old media has all but ignored Benghazi,, the IRS targeting patriots, the president's multiple flip flops on multiple topics, and 4.5 years of failed economic policies (which all involve taxing more and spending more, coincidentally) but finds time to report on some rich British broad birthin' a youngin' tells you all you need to know about their priorities being hellishly out of whack.

I always find articles like this amusing...they don't even bother doing the research to figure out why retailers ask for zip codes...for the most part, it's just to ensure they are maximizing their marketing dollars in the correct areas.

Privacy concerns over sharing your zip code? Heh. Trust me folks, no one making a paltry retail wage gives a crap. They ask because they have to ask.

Every time I see some casual wondering if the Crew can get two top prospects for KRod, I think back to the fact they gave up Adrian Rosario and Danny Herrera for him.

Not exactly the same, as he was making a lot more money, but, simply put, 30-35 innings is not worth a top prospect, never mind two.

Francisco Rodriguez is throwing well and the Red Sox have seen him, but Milwaukee got a great haul back for Zack Greinke. The situations, of course, aren't the same, but the asking price for K-Rod could be high.

They won't get more than a fraction for KRod that they got for Greinke, but if multiple teams are involved, they will get more.

Eric asks if trades are more likely to be made after a Sunday game, or after a Wednesday/Thursday game, after a series is complete, so to speak.

The answer, so to speak, is I don't know. Sabathia's trade was announced late Sunday/early Monday, but it was all done except the physicals Sunday morning. Greinke was dealt on a Saturday evening. KRod was picked up during the all star break, but if memory serves, he did not make it to MIL until Friday. Regardless, three trades is a tiny sample to judge.

I would assume teams often use the end of a series to take a step back and figure out where they are, or if they want to add, subtract, or stand pat.

Aramis Ramirez, 3B, Brewers — Scheduled to come off the DL Monday, but it may be a while before Ramirez plays. Once he does, he could still be traded after July 31 in a waiver deal. Ramirez will become an attractive chip, maybe interesting the Red Sox or Yankees. Ramirez hasn’t had the best of years, but if healthy he could be a force. Ramirez’s career is similar to that of Adrian Beltre. Ramirez has hit 347 homers to Beltre’s 367, has 1,253 RBIs to Beltre’s 1,270, and has an .845 OPS to Beltre’s .810.--Cafardo

As I have said, I don't see anyone picking him up on waivers, so he may well be traded well into August. 3B is incredibly weak around baseball, barely better than SS. Even Aramis with limited power is a step up for many clubs.

Stayed up 'til 12:30/1, and then when letting the Rambling dog out at 5:45, I saw him standing by the garden in the back yard...his cable doesn't go within twenty feet of the garden. I ran in the bedroom, put on a shirt (damn tabloids), and raced out to corner him while still in the back yard, as he was dragging about ten feet of cable, the plastic type with the wire covered up. Eventually, especially in the winter, that outside coating cracks, and the exposed wire gets weaker, until, finally, it gives. Luckily, it didn't occur in the dark, or during a time we let him out and wait for him to "knock," or who knows where he would have ended up.

Couldn't sleep after that burst of panic, so I waited until Target opened at 8 to go get a new one. Offered to get the Rambling son a fast food breakfast sandwich, and he and the Rambling wife each ordered one, along with a Hash Round (with her Monopoly coupon of a free one, it was $6...need to introduce them to the dollar menu). I planed on going to the pet store about 11:30, the vet is there from 10-12, and they are usually slow the last half hour, but I literally could barely keep my eyes open, and decided I would not be wise to make the trek across town in my fatigued condition. So, about five hours ago, I took a nap...just woke up to my alarm, which I had wisely set.

That said, my day still beats the heck out of all the guys who had to attend a wedding...

I have said on numerous occasions that the feds bailing out a fiscally irresponsible state might be the turning point to common sense spending.

Rand Paul is upset at the mere thought. Good for him. Detroit got themselves into this mess with liberal, wasteful, ridiculous spend and tax policies (pause to think who that reminds you of); and they can get themselves out of it.

If DC steps in and gives them a penny, local government everywhere should just declare an end to all tax collection, pave the streets with gold, feed the dogs at the shelter filet mignon, and have a cookout for the citizens every damn day...and when the bills come due, Fed Ex them (next day, because it costs more) to the capitol.

Have you heard the #1 group owed is the unions whose refusal to negotiate sent much of Detroit out of business? Now they are insisting their bloated pensions have to be paid in full, and not subject to the bankruptcy...they're special you know.

Francisco Rodriguez, Milwaukee Brewers
He has pitched effectively the last couple of months, and pushed his ERA down to 1.14. Some evaluators believe he'd be a solid add for Boston because of his history as a closer -- and he's 10-for-10 in save chances. He could be a good fit for Arizona, too.

John Axford, Milwaukee Brewers

His whole career has been built on streaks, from All-Star worthy bursts of success to the slumps that caused him to be dropped out of the closer's role. Since May 15, Axford -- working as a piece in the middle of the Milwaukee pecking order -- has allowed a run in one of 30 outings, taking his ERA from 9.00 to his current 3.63.

 Mike Gonzalez, Milwaukee Brewers
The Indians, Atlanta and others are looking for a lefty, and his experience would be attractive to them.--Olney

Relievers always battle small sample sizes, as a bad outing, or even an unlucky one, can balloon their ERA for a couple months. Good to see these three near the top of the list.

Also, I'm not sure if Frankie is gritty enough for the DBacks...he'll have to rub some dirt on his uniform while warming up to meet their high, albeit fictional, standards.

If the Brewers would trade KRod, Axford, and Gonzalez, who would they have in their bullpen?

Henderson, Badenhop, Kintzler, and Thornburg would remain, and Figaro is due back soon. Jesus Sanchez finally gave up a couple runs in Nashville last night, pushing his ERA over 2, and is on the 40. That would probably equal 6/7th's of the bullpen.

Would any relievers come back in return? Would they shift any of their young SP's to the 'pen? Would they give minor league vets like Rob Wooten a shot? Narveson has about a 3 ERA in his seven starts in "normal" AAA hitting environments, and a 3-1 K/BB ratio, so he would probably be considered as well.

Lohse, Axford, Henderson, and KRod all perform very nicely in front of the scouts, Henderson and KRod especially, velocity up, location nearly perfect. Lohse also impressive, I can't imagine him not making any contender better.

As we've talked about, only KRod, Axford, and Gonzalez are in the final season of their deals, so they can afford to wait out teams for everyone...except the above three. Unless they're just not offered anything approaching fair market value, those three need to be moved.

Home in Detroit listed for sale for $1.

Since it's in Detroit, I'd say it is well overpriced.

I have seen several stories about residents that live nearby that have purchased several of these, for $1-$10K, and rent them out for "improvements made" or well under market value...$200-300 a month, and are doing very nicely, many have paid off their mortgage or "flipped" them for substantial profit, one lady bought a house for $1000, told her brother he could live there for free as long as he fixed it up, and she sold it for $20K a year later. There are fortunes to be made in that market, even if it is a hole and a half.

The problem is, people watch out for locals. If I bought a house there, it'd be burned to the ground before I gave them eight bits. Just because they can.

EDIT: And very school within a mile is rated a 1. And taxes are $5000/year. $1 might be overpriced.--Ted Frank

He's 17 you know, and while I've been talking about his declining health for the past few years to the point of being accused of crying wolf, we all know he's declining; mentally and physically. Last summer, the vet, an older gent himself, quit doing the exam soon after he began, as if to imply it was a waste of time, and just said something to the effect of, "Not much we can do for you, is there old timer?"

That said, the Rambling wife reminded me a couple weeks ago that it was a year ago I asked them about "end of life issues," and we never thought he'd make it another year...other than an occasional bout of senility, and possibly being a bit more "stiff" walking down the stairs, he's the exact same dog he was then.

Mail a check and stay home.

I'm not anti wedding. However, I am pro enjoying one's life.

Who seriously thinks El Slavador will have more fans than the USA in Baltimore? C'mon.

By the way, I went to a community college in my hometown for the first two years, and several of the students were from Central America. The El Salvador contingent was known for their beautiful Latinas, soft and cute, not skinny and waiflike. Just gotta work that in, as El Salvador comes up so rarely.

Dodgers asking about KRod.

I'd give darn near anyone on the roster for Joc Pederson. BOS has a LH hitting 3B who has had a .400+ OBP at every level who is my other guy who would be a perfect fit for MIL, but it would probably take Yo to get him.

"Fiscally Conservative, Balanced Budgeted, Limited Government, Non-Union City Goes Bankrupt" -- is a headline that has never been written.--Patrick Millsaps

Heh, it's funny because it's true.

Never looked at it that way, but it's very true.

So am I supposed to feel sorry for Detroit union hacks who refused to cut a deal, pay into their pensions, demanded tax hikes instead?--Robert Graham

They chose decades of Dem leadership, and a belief they could travel back in time. They are where they are. Good luck with all that.

TEX very close on Garza, so close they have already said they want to get the deal done soon so Garza can pitch tomorrow night.

Right-hander C.J. Edwards, 8-2 with a 1.83 ERA for Rangers’ Class A Hickory club, is in play in Garza talks, sources say.--Rosenthal

Theo won't care if the kid is a year away or five, he's in that position, as he knows he's on solid ground and looking to build a dynasty, not a 2-3 year run.

EDIT: So is Mike Olt, power hitting 3B.

I guess I must have missed this on the network news tonight...too busy ignoring the fact Obama promised he would not let Detroit go bankrupt to report on what a scumbag Teddy was.

Garza trade "close" to getting done.

After that, it's probably Norris...with Gallardo and Lohse quite possibly next in line.

Considering Ramirez was playing 2/3rd's of the time when he went on the DL, I guess I just assumed he'd be back as soon as he's eligible. Be great if both he and Braun return at 90%.

Don't forget, Aramis makes far too much to claim on waivers, so he could easily be an August trade, especially as weak as the average 3B is. If he can prove he's healthy and able to perform at '12 levels, he'd be a popular target, even if the Crew has to pick up half his salary.
