Badgers' women upset #7 ranked Penn State at he Kohl Center.

3200 saw the shocker.

This is hilarious because:

1. The unions never read Obamacare until now?

2. They didn't think they'd be forced to follow the same rules as everyone else?

3. Both.

I've heard this said numerous times. Of course, as a former pizza guy, if you can't afford the tip, you should be eating somewhere else.

I've written notes on the credit card slip before thanking wait staff for good service, but only if they're cute, of course.

Jason e-mails me and asks if this is satire.

I'd like to think so, but I don't believe it is. It is, however, why I never go to that site...because my brain is functioning.

Note he never once even considers that a team like the Yankees could afford to do just this, and still doesn't, because it's so ignorant.

Ted Cruz to Hagel: I don't know you. We've never met. I have never talked to you. But you hate Israel.--Michelle Fields

Beginning to love Cruz just for his ability to get quoted, and his seeming love of capitalism and defending American interests. Romney could have used some of his fire and catchphrases.

(1/31/2013 04:52:00 PM) - Al

Most of us pointed this out then...who else can afford to sit around all day doing drugs? Unemployed rich kids, who don't think the law pertains to them, hence the drug use, sexual assaults, and vandalism that marked the Occupy movement, regardless of the old media's attempts to cover it up.

I am also very proud of the fact I said very early on it would not last one day after it got cold out...and sure enough, it died a cruel death the second the temps got the least bit uncomfortable...even in the warm climates, it died during the holiday season, because they had parties to go to, free booze to drink, and video games to play.

(1/31/2013 04:43:00 PM) - Al

Having roast beef tonight, been in the slow cooker all day. It's from the Rambling in-laws, so it has a bone in the middle (I refuse to buy roasts or steak with a bone, because I don't like paying for something I cannot eat). I just took the bone out and let it sit in a bowl of water for a few minutes, then gave it to the Rambling dog. It's too big, he can't really pick it up, so he's pushing it around the kitchen, cursing the day we got rid of our carpeting.

Free marketing...Bucks bring back old uniforms and 90's pricing for February home games. $6 seats in the upper level behind the baskets...that's mighty impressive, especially on the weekend games.

You're welcome, NBA franchise.

(1/31/2013 03:30:00 PM) - Al

You'll have to tell me why the government is involved in making loans to young adults that have no possible means of repayment at all, at interest rates far below market. Simply put, if you want to borrow money to go to school, go to the bank. And yes, I'm aware they're not going to give them a loan. Then the taxpayers shouldn't either.

What we basically have here is a gigantic ponzi scheme to support colleges and those who depend on the educational field to make an above average living. Not to mention government grants, which is a more pathetic, direct version of the above, which has led directly to tuition going up several times the rate of inflation, because as we all know, the government is a never ending wallet...because that's exactly what the left sees the taxpayers as.

These should end, or be scaled down to nothing, yesterday. It's tough love, but the deficit is not going away by continuing to pay students to drink heavily, delay adult responsibilities for a half-decade or more, and major in complete fraudulent programs like Creative Writing, Women's Studies, Art History, or Religion.

1/31/2013 03:30:00 PM

(1/31/2013 02:30:00 PM) - Al

With luck, maybe someday, we will learn to be as polite and civil as those on the left.

Note the lack of outcry from the old media. The silence is deafening.

(1/31/2013 01:30:00 PM) - Al

All about Groundhog Day (the movie, not the pretend holiday).

1. I know this was on Netflix, but it expires either today or tomorrow, so I assume it's on TBS or TNT this weekend.

2. I had no idea that supposedly 10 years (or thousands, according to director Harold Ramis) went by. I thought it was more like six months, tops.

46% of the market is too much?

Just discovered the Rambling family missed the first episode of Survivor last night, and the DVR's didn't catch it either because each season has to be programmed in separately.

Shows you how little we watch CBS, I had no idea, and neither did anyone else.

EDIT: Jason writes to say it doesn't premiere until 2/13. Funny, several people have said they missed it, and if you google it, it says it is on tonight, from 17 hours ago.

I realize Seinfeld is not hurting for cash, but he doesn't have to do stuff like this, but he does. I assume he still lives in the New York City area, so he doesn't even have to go on the road, but I promise you, most don't bother.

(1/31/2013 09:30:00 AM) - Al

So, Piers Morgan, how's that far-left stance working out for you?

Ooh...never mind.

I had to look it up, Logo is a channel that aims for alternative lifestyles, available in 41M homes...CNN is in over 100M. Painful.

Was just thinking of the fact that every time scientists go into the deep jungle or rainforest of South America, they find hundreds of species they never knew existed. A previously thought uninhabited section of Siberia is now found to have people living there, completely cut off from the world (and they got along just fine, even without the FDA to save them from, you know, bacon and not knowing the current food pyramid).

But yet, many believe there is, without a single doubt mind you, that the temperature is one-half of one degree warmer cooler different than it was 150 years ago, and that is the reason behind every bad weather event...and it's all directly related to man polluting the skies with the result of hard work and industry.

And when you remind them the Ice Age occurred ages ago, before any of this advancement, and was infinitely more of a catastrophic happening than anything since the Industrial Revolution...you get a dumb look and a "So?!"

They remind me of the folks who burned witches at the stake because they knew better than us buffoons who wrote off stuff as coincidence and good fortune. Always beware of those who insist they understand things far better than us simpletons who just would let the free market take care of things unless it was limiting someone's rights.

Biden's gun expertise is lacking.

He should have asked the president, who I hear is a freaking gun aficionado (and truthfully, pretty much an expert on everything).

(1/31/2013 08:57:00 AM) - Al

It reminds me of the time he bowled and managed a 35ish score.

My guess is, he's just become so used to stretching the truth, changing the story to fit the required scenario (we had no idea those were terrorists, even though we did), it's just second nature at this point.

Me, I'm not a gun guy at all, but I do respect the Constitution and the freedoms it stands for. And you know what? I've never gone skeet shooting.

This is exactly what I said. They seem intent on banning guns that look icky, regardless of common sense.

It's not the guns, it's the assault on freedom. Every move they make eliminates what made America great, and cripples the already fragile economy. Oh, and spends more money they do not have.

What do you call a liberal male union thug vs. a conservative woman? A fair fight.

Heh. Comment after a KS female politician tweeted out that ladies were being told to take precautions after they vote to eliminate collective bargaining tomorrow, such as removing name tags and walking with a male escort.

After the vandalism and destruction in WI and MI, I'd say they should all have security of some sort.

Report card day for the Rambling son, I wish they'd give out grades instead of numbers and codes, having to look at what everything is makes it a cumbersome experience.

Odd too is how inconsistent they seem to be, for instance, in math he went down in several subcategories, but overall, went from a 3 to a 4.

The future of TV begins tomorrow, which Netflix releasing all 13 episodes of House of Cards, a political drama starring Kevin Spacey.

I'm not sure why they are doing it this way, I think they'd gain a lot more buzz by releasing one episode a week for 13 weeks, but they'll figure this out. They will be releasing new episodes of Arrested Development soon.

Losing stings, but bigger picture is that the have played five top-15 teams in 18 days... And gone toe-to-toe with every one.--Badgers' PR

They're a gritty group, like always. You can't have a bad stretch versus a team as good as Ohio State, you need 40 solid minutes, and UW played 35 or so. The Big Ten is the best conference is the country, and it shows.

The Rambling son is excited about a snow day tomorrow. Not canceled yet, not even a delay, but plenty of snow in the forecast.

EDIT: Only two districts have canceled, but we have 4-8 inches with 40 mph winds forecast. I think they're just fooling themselves.

1/29/2013 10:07:00 PM

(1/29/2013 10:04:00 PM) - Al

Casey asks if I have seen this...I have, but I don't think it is technically correct...shortage implies empty shelves, this is a supply issue, and hence, the price has risen, and demand has predictably slowed down.

For my money, chicken wings are too messy anyway. I make them once in a while on the grill, and sit by myself at the kitchen table and eat, with a roll of paper towels. We always order the "boneless" version when we're out.

News breaking that Andy Cooper has been caught once again reporting fiction as news.

I, for one, am shocked.

You don't need anymore proof that the old media leans far to the left than the fact he's still working.

EDIT: MSNBC deserves most of the blame, but Andy tweeted out lies, and then deleted them when challenged.

EDIT 2: How many times are they going to get caught editing and calling it news? Then, when Hillary lies and asks what's the big deal an ambassador is dead, they ignore it and report fiction?

May you live in interesting times.

Alex Gonzalez gets $1.5M from Brewers plus the chance to earn nearly $1 million in performance bonuses.--Rosenthal

I don't dislike it, as Alex is probably as good as many guys who were signed to a big league deal, but I don't think he's much better than Bianchi, who is supposedly out of options and has a far higher ceiling.

EDIT: Adam seems to assume this is a major league deal, while I figured it would be a minor league contract with an opt-out of late March. If it is a major league deal, a 40 man spot will have to be cleared.

The great thing about this is, there was no fake success here...no one moved the basket or whatever, which is common in our "everyone wins" world.

Years ago, when we lived in the Twin Cities, they had a story about a high school kid named Adam Brown, who would forever be known as Downtown Adam Brown, who I think was the manager of his team, and they let him play in a game and he drilled several 3's, if memory serves. I have googled that before but have never located the piece, sadly, I think it was pre-internet, or at least pre-internet is so common as to be considered a must have.

Random stat of the day: Monta Ellis has the highest scoring average (19.4ppg) among active players without an All-Star berth.--Jim Paschke

Great offensive players are few and far between. That's why scorers are taken first, and defensive wizards often don't even get a chance to tryout.

First of all, I can't believe they're making the Vikings' stadium fit baseball into it, instead of just making a superb football stadium.

I'd go to funerals more often if they were like this.

As an amateur futurist, I often look at 50-500 years ahead and ponder how things will be the same or different. I have no doubt that in a century or two, assisted suicide will be a business just like plastic surgery is today, and funerals will be completely different. How, I'm not sure. I would guess, however, they'll be far more like the link than a somber occasion.

Just went from a canceled flight in Milwaukee at 11am, to a ride to Chicago, to a 4pm flight in Chicago, to another 2 hour delay--John Axford

This hurts the Brewers and Bucks in battles for free agents. If you play in a bigger market, your a flight away from home, or in a regional hub like Denver or Atlanta. In Milwaukee, you're not flying home on a day off and returning the morning of your next game without headaches like Axford is experiencing. Add that to the cold, and it's a mighty tough sell.

(1/28/2013 04:10:00 PM) - Al

Interesting thought, I wonder if Kam Loe or KRod would be welcomed back to the fold if either said they would sign a minor league contract. KRod, especially, has had no mentions at all, and was his usual self except for a six week stint, when he was probably less than 100% physically.

KRod also has that domestic abuse arrest hanging over his head, which in addition to his arrest years ago when he was with the Mets, probably has at least half the teams in MLB not considering him.

At this point, a minor league contract with an early opt-out date is probably as good as it's going to get. Loe might still get a 1-2 year deal, but KRod is going to be limited. Even Parra has been scarcely mentioned, odd for a lefty who throws hard.

Adam should ask Doug if any of the former relievers are still being discussed, or if they've been told "they'd have a better chance with another team."

The Blackhawks should be commended for doing this, and other organizations should be asked why they do not do the same.

I seem to recall another NHL team, maybe the Flyers, is known for a spirited version of the anthem as well.

EDIT: Nope, I was thinking of the Blackhawks, as this is the one they are best known for.

Philly plays a tape of Kate Smith singing God Bless America rather than the anthem.

One has to wonder if Cedeno was one of the infielders the Crew said they were talking to.

No SS that thinks he should be starting is going to sign in MIL unless they have no chances elsewhere, as Segura played well and will have a long leash. I love Theriot myself, as he is a fine OBP man and a nice guy to have as a PH late in the game. Other than that, Alex Gonzalez is about it.

I have nothing against Overbay (I have nothing against any player with major league experience on a minor league deal), but as a LH hitter who can only play 1B, he's far from ideal. As a PH/reserve 1B for a couple months, which would allow Morris and Green time at AAA, he's not a bad fit.

The were back at it today prepping for No. 14 Ohio State. UW will face a top-15 team for the 5th time in 6 games.--Badgers' PR

A couple points here. One, they usually take Sunday off, though I'm sure it's not the first time their schedule has been changed due to a tough game Monday or Tuesday. Dick Bennett once said he never practiced on Sunday because of consistency and the religious nature of the day...if you recall, Jon Bryant came to Madison in part because of this, as he was LDS and preferred not to perform on Sunday, though he made exceptions for the 4-5 Sundays they played for the year or two he was around.

Two...that's a mighty tough run of games, isn't it? I watched a lot of Illini/Michigan today, and while the Wolverines are tough, and vastly superior; very long and very athletic, IL could have been right in it had they hit open 3's. And that's the "easy" road game this week.

I asked whether there there was any scenario in which Kyle Lohse, who remains a free agent, fits the Brewers’ plan.

“There’s always a chance,” Attanasio said. “Again, it’s a function of size of contract, length of contract. Kyle had a phenomenal two seasons the last two seasons. We just have to see if that fits in our overall scheme.”
When asked whether the Brewers had been in contact with Lohse’s agent, Scott Boras, Attanasio said only that, “Doug is in the office every day … and is in touch with all the agents, all the general managers.”

Besides a financial commitment to Lohse, the Brewers would have to forefeit their first-round Draft pick (No. 17 overall) to the Cardinals, who made a qualifying offer to Lohse. That sounded like less of an impediment to Attanasio than the dollars.

“The draft pick compensation, I think you have to look at the whole picture,” Attanasio said. “We’ve given up picks before, and when we got CC [Sabathia] and we got Zack [Greinke], we gave up more than draft compensation — we gave up ready-to-go young players. This season, we’re mindful of the fact that if we do add some pieces, we may have to give up some young players.

“So, the draft pick compensation hasn’t been as big an item for us in looking at this as it’s been for other teams. We’ve got the No. 17 pick. We’ve done some good things with that level of pick, but I’m mindful that we drafted Ryan Braun No. 5 and Prince Fielder No. 7 and Rickie Weeks No. 2.”--MLB.com

Almost any team would happily sign Lohse for 1y/$10M. Considering Dempster got 2y/$26M, I can't imagine him ending up with less than that. I imagine some team will have a SP go down right away, and Kyle will end up with 3y/$40M, or more.

Only three players on the big-league camp roster ware expected to be limited at the start: Hart, left-hander Miguel De Los Santos (shoulder) and infielder Hector Gomez (groin). The Brewers claimed De Los Santos off waivers from the Rangers in September knowing he had a shoulder issue.

“We decided we’d rather get him fixed now and get it over with instead of going into the season wondering when he’s going to break down,” Ash said. “He should be back by July.”--MLB.com

On another note, DLS will probably go on the 60 day DL at the end of March, which will open a spot on the 40 man, as it is full and not with guys who will clear waivers. With most clubs having a full 40, I would think there's a chance he would be DFA'd now to clear a spot, as few teams want to claim an injured player and risk losing someone else.

Bucks are far closer to the #2 seed in the East than they are the #9 spot. Perhaps most impressive, they'd be tied for the 7th seed in the West. Heck, only 2 out of the 4th seed

Doesn't matter if they do not play well, but the East is a bastion of mediocrity. Considering the future is a complete unknown (Ellis can choose to opt out of his deal, and despite his warts, is 14th in the NBA is scoring, and 4th among shooting guards), and if you include Monta, six players will be free agents after '13, including rotation members Udoh and Dunleavy.

Funny things about the reaction to Rondo being out with a torn ACL:

1. Many already saying Danny Ainge has offered Paul Pierce and is looking to rebuild, seeing little chance of winning a title...as that's the only goal.

2. Rondo was walking normally after the game in which he hurt his knee...many don't seem to realize you can function pretty normally with a torn ACL...I worked with a guy who tore his ages ago and is waiting to have surgery when he gets health insurance...and says it doesn't even bother him most days. However, playing a sport at the highest levels is pretty unlikely.

Bits of news leaking out of On Deck...

...Crew still looking for 1B depth while Hart is out, but with Gamel and Green, and also Hunter Morris in AAA, no top of the line AAA/major league 1B is going to have much interest in MIL. As I said before, finding a RH bat that can play other spots (most likely 3B or LF/RF) is likely as good as it going to get. Adam mentioned Lyle Overbay is still a FA, and that Ishikawa has signed with the Orioles.

...Gallardo and Estrada are entrenched in the rotation, and Peralta probably is. Roenicke has some doubts if Narveson will be 100% to start the spring.  Rogers is out of options, and is all but guaranteed a roster spot. No one will say it, but if a final roster spot comes down to Rogers and someone with an option, like Fiers or Thornburg, no doubt who will win.

...Doug says they are still talking to a couple FA infielders.

Dems move to ban handguns and rifles, common sense rubes tell them "assault weapons" have been banned since 1934.

I'm hoping this is the tea party issue of 2010 in 2014. This is not a small step, but a huge one, and one that does exactly what the NRA has said will happen. It also has no chance, not even a tiny one, of ever passing the House, which means it's all just for show.

Brandon Jennings once again misses the all-star game by a player or two.

Hard to believe they still only take 12 players. The irony is, while MLB players often choose to rest, the NBA guys often play when not at 100%, so it's not likely he'll be added even if someone opts out.

I have to wonder if the "solution" will end up being he'll be traded to a team in the Northeast in which he can play 41 home games and travel easily to 10-15 road games without flying. A solid big man who can play 75% of the time has some value. He certainly has not done himself any favors by seemingly delaying any chance of playing for months as he's bickered about minor procedural things.

I'm torn about this, as, since I believe in freedom and equality, I should be on the side of women serving equally, if they so desire, as indeed, we do have an all volunteer armed forces.

However, I'm not sure if I do, as I agree with the author that relaxing standards will happen, and to be blunt, I'm not sure I see a benefit here...at the very least, women become a target, and have different needs in a dirty, battles can last a couple weeks environment.

Note the factoid that right after the old media said the NRA was looney to want to put armed security in schools, the public...and now Obama himself agree.

If I'm remembering the math right, MIL is now in the playoffs by 5.5 games, one game short of the halfway mark.

Charles Payne discusses why he thinks the market will grow despite anti-growth tactics in DC. Long-term, you should always bet on the USA.

Not only is the US stock market historically undervalued, the vast majority of growth is scheduled to happen in other nations. As I often talk about, the economy goes up and down nonstop, regardless of what economic policies are occurring. As I said four years ago, we won't see a depression, we'll see a long, slow, steady malaise...sadly, we'll probably see that the next four years too. Considering the continued deficit spending, we should naturally see growth...we're adding money to the economy every day. The fact we're not is representative of failed economic policy. Imagine the boom we could be having if we'd do something revolutionary like allowing people to keep more of what they earn.

Shorthand...Robin Hood is a fable, not smart fiscal decision making.

This is exactly what happens when you insist on bringing government into everything that it doesn't need to be involved in.

Think how easy it would be to remove government and watch the deficit and debt all but magically go down.

When you remove freedoms and involve government more, it costs more. The opposite is true as well.

I wish the big government utopians would figure this out.

Al,

I thought you said something a while back about W2's being late. My wife just called and said they got a memo saying her company would not be distributing hers until at least Feb. 8th, and maybe later. I lost my job last year when my company just shut down, so I have been told I will just have to estimate mine.

Why are so many late, and any idea what I do? I have no clue how much was taken out of each check.

Hank

Sorry to hear Hank. Some W2's are late this year because of Obamacare and other tax hikes that were not "official" until late December. I actually just got one today from where I got laid off, as I did not know if they'd be on time. I have always heard companies do not have to actually pay their share of Social Security until they send out W2's, so sometimes a delay is a sign of financial distress.

Hank, just google up "no W2 company out of business," or do what I say 100 times a week...contact a tax professional.

Hank has written to me several times, as we both lost jobs within a week or two last summer. He is still "looking," while I'm back in sales, meaning they don't have to pay me unless I have success (these are the only offers I've had, except for my seasonal gig). The irony is, he has done factory and construction work since high school, and the only offers he gets are sales jobs as well.

I was disappointed Jon Leuer was traded last summer, but since then, the Rockets released him, the Cavs picked him up and barely played him, and now have dealt him to the Grizzlies...who had to take him back to make the salary cap numbers work, in a swap designed so Memphis don't have to pay the luxury tax.

I understand he's a role player, but I sure felt he had more value.

Ponder that claim for a moment: Wisconsin's failure to automatically subtract union duties from paychecks endangers free speech because it requires organized labor to persuade its own members that its activities are valuable enough to contribute to voluntarily.--Wall Street Journal

Read the whole thing, but let me sum it up for you...responsible spending and lower taxes works.

The idea it is somehow unconstitutional to not deduct future contributions to the Democratic party from a union member's paycheck is ridiculous, and offensive.

By the way, I'm still waiting to be reimbursed for the union recall folly, which wasted millions because a special interest wanted their special interests to be more special than the taxpayers did.

(1/22/2013 11:29:00 AM) - Al

I find it humorous that some folks are wondering why Corey Hart's injury was just found now. To me, it makes perfect sense...many of these guys play at 70-90% much of the season, and rest takes care of it in the offseason. They take a month or two off, and then start workouts, in November, December, or right after the new year, depending on how much they feel they need to be ready.

Again, people forget, or just don't care to know, that many players are beat up much of the time, as they play every day, and don't have time to fully heal up, in  many cases. And, despite common sense, many continue to play this way, even though their results are subpar. Remember, Trevor Hoffman was said to be 100% over and over a couple years ago; and finally, Axford came up and took over. Late in the season, it finally leaked that Trevor had not been healthy, and his "one on one" time with the pitching coach had mainly just been letting his arm heal. ARod needed surgery, and over and over, we heard he was 100%, despite the fact he looked uncomfortable and wasn't hitting at all.

No one's 100% in September and October.

By the way, Corey will get a second opinion before having surgery. I can probably tell him his choices...play in pain and hobble all season, or get it taken care of.

Obama even indulged in American liberalism’s favorite ideological tic—the insistence that it’s not an ideology at all, but simply a pragmatic response to changing circumstances.--Slate

It doesn't matter what the question is, the answer is raising taxes and increasing spending.

It reminds me of Barbara Corcoran...she is now on The Shark Tank, but for years, was an "expert" who made appearances on shows like Today. She made a fortune in real estate, mostly in Manhattan. Of course, we have had a real estate bust the past few years, but whenever she was asked if it was a good time to invest, her answer mirrored that of every realtor all the time...yes, yes it is.

(1/21/2013 09:00:00 PM) - Al

Two school notes:

1. Just saw an ad for Grand Canyon University on TV. They're a military friendly online school who is quickly becoming one of the largest, as well as expanding their real world presence. I've been getting e-mails from them for five years, as they must buy lists from military blogs and the like. It's kind of cool, I knew them back when they were just starting out. They begin play in the WAC next season, the first D1 "for profit" university.

2. They just canceled school locally. I'll go in and pick up my stuff, get lunch, and work at home in the afternoon. The Rambling son is excited, even though he enjoys school. Nothing beats a snow (or cold) day.

Al,

Pop freezes on the trucks by noon in this weather if "bay heaters" are not used.

That's cold.

Scott

Yes it is.

Merrill, which is about 20 miles north of me, closed for tomorrow. The trouble I see is, it's almost going to be as cold Wednesday morning as tomorrow.

1/21/2013 08:47:00 PM

(1/21/2013 06:00:00 PM) - Al

Just started the Rambling car for the first time since I got home Friday afternoon. Didn't sound real peppy, but it made it.

You hear a lot about people needing to care of their pets that are outside in the cold, but livestock always seemed to do fine. You have to make sure they're getting enough to eat, and it's much preferable if they have a place to get inside, at least out of the wind. We'd all think it would suck if we had to stay out in this cold (and it would), but if we covered ourselves up and had plenty of calories to burn, we'd be fine.

1/21/2013 06:00:00 PM

(1/21/2013 05:03:00 PM) - Al

Lots of schools north of Wausau (mostly 2+ hours north) are canceling or delaying school three hours tomorrow.

I have no problem with it, especially the delays, as those count as a day of school for the state education czars, who don't care about anything except having a job and having papers to push to justify.

The local TV anchor just said it best, "Only on TV do we send a reporter outside to tell people not to go outside."

EDIT: Rhinelander just added themselves to the list of closures, they're about an hour north. -15 here tomorrow, -15 to -20 north of us, so the difference is pretty minimal. I was just having an office day, so I could do that at home if necessary.

Supposedly, Virginia may be offered a Big Ten spot as early as this week, with North Carolina or Georgia Tech being #16, and the final team. Would they prefer Charlotte to Atlanta? Atlanta is a huge TV market, but Tech is the second fiddle to Georgia.

ADDED: Many seem to think the Big Ten will end up with 20 teams, with 4 5 team "pods"...in football, you'd play the other four every season, and alternate between the others, one each year. In basketball, you'd do a home and home with your four pod buddies, and alternate 1 or 2 of the others.

Very interesting. Duke is even rumored to be looking to join it's rival NC. Geez, you think people hate Duke now...

The Big 12 hopes to pounce on those who do not get a Big Ten or SEC offer. More on that here, rumored to be close to adding Miami, Florida State, and Clemson. Just like that, the ACC is near death with the close to extinct a year ago Big 12 is close to being a notch below the Big Ten and SEC.

The Rambling wife read last night that ER's and furnace repairmen will be very busy with the very cold temps. I understood the furnace part, but not the ER's. The article stated they get about twenty visits a day with cold related ailments when it is below zero...frostbite, hypothermia, people trying to do too much, and prolonged exposure.

I find it difficult to believe that people still don't respect cold, especially since hardly anyone gets "stuck" in the conditions, as you can call for help with your cell phone. Hopefully, our furnace will hang on, it's about two decades old. The Rambling wife reminded me we had to replace the furnace in Cities home when the home inspection found there to be something wrong...although it was functioning, the guys were required to disconnect it so it could not be used.

Nothing sucks more than paying for a furnace you never use.

Another nicely written, common sense article making fun of those who use terms like "assault rifle" and "need to ban automatic weapons," which have been effectively regulated since 1934. Muscular security guard (built a lot like me) gets drilled in the Falcons/49ers' game...his back to the field, took it right below the knees, WR going full speed gets knocked out of bounds. Lucky he wasn't wearing spikes, he wouldn't have any knees left.

We keep thinking we're going to buy a Soda Stream, but we have yet to take the plunge. Last time I bought pop at Wal Mart, I price matched Coke products, so I got Barq's diet root beer, which I doubt I have had in twenty years.

A. Kind of an aftertaste, and not a pleasant one. Tastes nothing like Mug or A&W, my usual two choices...I just figured it out, there's no vanilla flavor at all.

B. I think it's funny the tagline is "It's good." I can only imagine how much they paid a marketing company to come up with that.

This morning, I grabbed the chain latch to hook onto the Rambling dog's collar...my fingers actually hurt where the metal was, even if they only touched the cold metal for a couple seconds. It's probably not dangerously cold just to be out a few minutes, but it is not the time to be going on a long walk either.

Maybe linked to the cold, my dreams were all over the place...I have had a dream several times where I and several others are dancing in the back of a small truck, like a Ryder...not sure if it's being telecast or what. Then, after lying awake a while this morning with the Rambling dog as he lie next to me, having jumped up on our bed, I had a dream in which the Rambling son, dog, and myself were on some sort of Survivorman/Man vs. Wild winter expedition, and we came upon a creek, and I slipped and fell in. I was gasping, but the water was not cold, it was more like lukewarm...because I wasn't in water, but under the blankets.

The Rambling wife and son called off Sunday school on account of cold this AM, and she opened the door as I was yelling for air, she said I sounded as if I was in pain.

The subconscious mind is an odd place.

Bucks had to spend the night in Portland, fog too thick to fly home. Nothing teams hate more than to spend their day off traveling...that's the main reason Griffey left the Mariners.

Funny how similar the Bucks and Badgers games were last night...both had large leads, and both comebacks fell just short...POR just ran out of time, if it was a 55 minute game, they almost certainly would have won.

Two years ago, our unemployment rate was 7.8% and we faced a $3.6 billion budget deficit.

Today, our unemployment rate is down to 6.7% and we have a budget surplus of $342 million. The surplus came from tough, but prudent, decisions that helped us balance state and local government budgets for years to come.--Governor Walker

Despite a hellishly poor and getting worse national economy. It's getting better, even though the deficit spending and higher taxes continue from DC.

I wonder if everyone has someone on Facebook that you look at their updates and are extremely thankful you're not them?

No, I don't mean the person that tells you how much pain they're in 2-3 times a week, I mean the person that updates their status trying to be positive, but they are just always doing things you despise. Tonight, there's a person out eating sushi and drinking coffee...I just feel sorry for them. Folks that inform you they are on a long hike, or a 50 mile bike ride...by choice.

And yes, I realize this is something someone might think by reading this...there's nothing wrong with sushi and coffee, it's just that I'd rather not partake.

2nd half went as nicely as the 1st half went poorly, but the Badgers just couldn't get back to even. Dekker showed how good he can be after a poor first half. Zach Bohannon contributed a bit due to foul trouble, I felt he'd be playing a tad more as a role player thus far. Nice effort for Marshall also.

Always funny when a team has a bad shooting half, you see everyone blaming everything except poor shooting.

Look tired, not moving their feet...but no one talks about the elephant in the room, not being able to put the ball in the basket, which, proven by how much scorers get paid in the pros, makes everything else a bit less important. Iowa did seem to do a good job pushing the Badgers out, but if they hit a few ore open 3's, it's a tight game. Turn the ball over less and hit open jumpers, UW probably down 4-6.

Because they missed a ton, down 16.

Ryan Raburn
Juan Rivera
Jeff Baker
Mark Derosa

Those might be the three free agents that are left that may consider a minor league contract. All are 1B/OF, while Raburn and Baker can also play 2B/3B, while Derosa can also play 3B. All are RH hitters and all hit LHP very well. Raburn was discussing a guaranteed deal with SF earlier this week, so he would be unlikely.

Most other possibilities are LH bats, and with Gamel, Caleb Gindl, and Hunter Morris all in the system, that seems a bit repetitive to me.

I had the Rambling son change furnace filters tonight, we try and do it on the first of the month, along with the Rambling dog's heartworm and flea/tick meds, but we always struggle to remember when it's cold, as there's little risk of bugs and the like during the cold time of year. I stopped and got the Rambling son and wife a shrimp dinner at our local corner grocery today. It's very overpriced, so I picked up myself something more economical.

I asked the deli fella "Can I get a couple extra rolls?" as both love their carbs and bread. He wrote something on the little bag he put them in, I assumed it was a code of some sort for the register. Only tonight I noticed he had written "N/C" on the bag, which I figure stands for no charge.

It may only be 20 cents of rolls, but that's the best marketing they could have thought up.

Today, I started a load of laundry when I got home from the office (you ladies are thinking you really missed out, aren't you?), and I threw in a Purex "pod"...except I never let go, I just held onto it. It slowly disintegrated in my hand as the water rushed in, and suddenly, I was holding what felt like soapy plastic...but then it was just kind of soap. It's like the plastic that holds the soap is made out of soap itself.

By the way, the fact that many seem to think the pod is an incredible waste or con makes me more confident using them. They are so easy and can't spill, they are well worth the price. I know I always use far more detergent than the Rambling wife, because I never bother to measure.

Best explanation I've seen of the various weapons, 99% of all weapons are perfectly legal and not "assault rifles" which don't even exist.

I read last night that Obama's executive orders ended up being very tame because, despite a legal team of thousands, they could not differentiate between what people use for hunting and sport and what are poften used in crimes...there is no difference, despite many anti-Constitution people insisting school shootings were "automatic," which have not been sold in the USA since, wait for it, 1934.

Never even think about questioning Bo Ryan and his players. The great thing about the college game is the coach is both the GM and the coach, so he can bring in his own type of player. He's built that program into a dynasty, and even in almost anyone would say is a "down year" talent wise (especially with Gasser injured), they can still take the court against anyone on a given night, and if they hit their 3's, and have the other guys miss some, they can beat anyone.

Those tough nonconference games, though many hate them, including myself, paid off tonight. Suddenly, Traevon Jackson is a passable point guard who can hit a midrange jumper just like Jordan Taylor did.

Every night is going to be a struggle in the Big Ten, I think 4 of the next 5 are versus ranked teams. Can't take that W away, however.
