(6/30/2013 11:55:00 PM) - Al

Sign and trade possibilities emerging for the Bucks with Redick, though he has no intentions of returning to MIL.

(6/30/2013 10:50:00 PM) - Al

Dwight Howard meeting with the Rockets at 9:01 Pacific time too.

If someone wanted to make me an offer for millions of dollars, I'd inform them to call me at noon tomorrow.

6/30/2013 10:50:00 PM

(6/30/2013 10:08:00 PM) - Al

Bucks have made Budinger's signing a priority.

Pelicans will have a face to face with Tyreke Evans tonight after free agency commences at 12:01 AM ET, ESPN has learned.--ESPN

Heh. That'd be great if someone ever signed without talking to several teams.

6/30/2013 09:32:00 PM

(6/30/2013 07:53:00 PM) - Al

Bucks plan to make offer to Jennings before other teams can, hope he signs quickly.

Hoops Hype offers a site for each team's rumors. The last couple days reads like this on the Bucks' page.

Bucks are considering every shooting guard that is a free agent.

(6/30/2013 07:34:00 PM) - Al

In a nutshell, that's what happens when your relief corps has to pitch more than they should.

Gonzalez, Kintzler, and KRod  should probably have a couple days off, but they will probably all say they can go Tuesday.

6/30/2013 07:34:00 PM

(6/30/2013 05:55:00 PM) - Al

Even with Tyler's strong outing, 3-4 more innings needed in extras, they still might need more pitching for DC.

6/30/2013 05:55:00 PM

(6/30/2013 05:21:00 PM) - Al

I would move Gonzalez on the first decent offer. The odds of him getting through the season healthy are very minimal.

(6/30/2013 05:16:00 PM) - Al

2nd tie today at 1B they give to the defense.

If they can't get the close ones right, what good are they?

(6/30/2013 04:44:00 PM) - Al

  • GM Doug Melvin admits to receiving calls about his bullpen, but he isn't quite sure what to expect in return, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Teams have to determine what is important to them and how they value relief pitchers," Melvin said. "Sometimes they don't want to give up a lot to acquire them. They think teams will give up guys just to get rid of their contracts. We're not really looking to do that."
  • Axford, the Brewers' highest-paid reliever at $5MM in his first year of arbitration eligibility as a Super Two, is aware his name is being floated in trade rumors. "I'm sure there will be talk about it as we get closer to the trade deadline," Axford told Haudricourt. "Teams probably will test the waters and see what the Brewers' response is. I'll be fine with it. You have to block that out and focus on your job here."
  • Manager Ron Roenicke has re-inserted Rodriguez into the closer's role, reports Haudricourt's colleague Michael Hunt. Did the idea of showcasing Rodriguez for a Trade Deadline deal have any role in this decision? "None, not to me," said Roenicke. "Not until I meet with (GM) Doug (Melvin) and Doug tells me something different."
  • Teams also are reported to have shown interest in Brewers' starting pitchers Yovani Gallardo and Kyle Lohse, but Melvin told Haudricourt trading either one "is not something we have to do. We're not necessarily looking to sell. But if somebody steps up (with a big offer), I'd have to listen."--MLBTR
Relievers only throw about 10-12 innings a month. They usually don't garner much because their value is minimal, unless they are replacing someone who has really struggled.

(6/30/2013 04:29:00 PM) - Al

Every batter has either walked or drilled the ball off Thornburg in the 5th/6th, until the last one taps out between the catcher and the mound.

Because they were line drives right at fielders though, hardly anyone noticed.

6/30/2013 04:29:00 PM

(6/30/2013 03:51:00 PM) - Al

The Rambling church back home sent me their monthly newsletter. In it, they talk about having a "corn boil."

I remember I had a painful corn boil once, took a month of antibiotics to clear that up.

Thanks, I'll be here all week.

6/30/2013 03:51:00 PM

(6/30/2013 03:09:00 PM) - Al

Depending on Tyler's amount of work today, we could see another move after today, likely Thornburg himself, if he only is able to go a couple frames and the bullpen has to get 15 or more outs.

Burgos and Sanchez are both on the 40 and have been effective. Yes, that's a short list.

Pena has too at AA, but has not pitched for ten days as he "rests" to avoid him going over his innings limit.

6/30/2013 03:09:00 PM

(6/30/2013 03:04:00 PM) - Al

Jurrjens is probably a step up from Peralta, and may be of interest to the Crew.

Of course, I mean presently, as Wily has a bright future.

EDIT: He does have at least an option left for this year, as BAL needed 40 man space, not 25 man.

(6/30/2013 02:41:00 PM) - Al

Summerfest let people in for free for 15 minutes last night because so many people were trying to buy tickets. Supposedly, many were there to see Imagine Dragons on one of the side stages, which are free with admission.

And no, I've never heard of them either.

EDIT: The Rambling wife says she has heard their single, Radioactive, on pop stations at work.

6/30/2013 02:41:00 PM

(6/30/2013 02:19:00 PM) - Al

Sounds like we're looking at more than an hour to go in this delay. Paging Tyler Thornburg.--Adam, MLB.com

Maybe this will allow them to put Lohse in between Hellweg and Hand to split them up. That said, in 2013, in a stadium recently built, it is inexcusable.

6/30/2013 02:19:00 PM

(6/30/2013 02:14:00 PM) - Al

Carl Landry, whom the Bucks have tried to acquire in past, told me he is"definitely interested'' in signing with Bucks.--Racine Journal Times

I left him off the list yesterday because, to be honest, a Milwaukee native signing in Milwaukee just seems too easy, especially since I already had Harris. he nice thing about Landry is, he is a plus defender versus the 3/4/5 and rebounds, and will score without having to run offense through him.

6/30/2013 02:14:00 PM

(6/30/2013 02:09:00 PM) - Al

Great guy to pick up on a minor league deal just in case they deal some relievers.

Every time someone mentions a third party, it's always the same...fiscally conservative, moderate/libertarian  on social issues.

I'd happily support such an endeavor, as it basically mirrors my own model of small, responsible government. I'd prefer the GOP simply move in that direction and let the far right on social issues (vehemently anti abortion, anti gay, and anti adults having personal consent) run off to thump the bible and proclaim we're all going to hell because Maude has a shot of bourbon at night and Millie plays the slots.

Not only don't I care, but it takes away from the important issues of the day like the economy, free market, and the economy.

6/30/2013 02:04:00 PM

(6/30/2013 01:30:00 PM) - Al

Rosenthal reports Lucroy has full no trade protection, and the Brewers have no interest in moving him anyway.

The strange thing is, they just said a few days ago Braun was swinging the bat and experiencing pain...that was literally just a couple games ago.

6/30/2013 01:21:00 PM

(6/30/2013 01:14:00 PM) - Al

Lohse appeared to let the umpiring crew have it, made him pitch in the pouring rain for several minutes and then suddenly decided that was enough.

And yes, it is a shame they have a near brand new ballpark that can only be used when it isn't precipitating.

I'm sure I would find about 570 things to veto...and if memory serves, the governor is also allowed to cross off numbers and replace them, which I would be forced to do on darn near every line...seriously, every department can't save 1-2%?

A billion dollars saved is a good start, and probably all we can expect given the far left wing that resides in the People Republic of Madison.

Rockets, though, acknowledge chances of finding deal involving Brooks or Delfino by day's end are slim and thus MUST waive both if no trade.--ESPN

Carlos Delfino never wanted to leave, though Hammond allowed him to without an offer being made. Aaron Brooks is a point guard. Both could potentially useful to the Bucks, depending on what they plan to do with Jennings. The thing is, the Rockets are making moves to clear as much cap space as possible to make a max offer for Dwight Howard, so they cannot accept a player back, draft picks or cash.

(6/29/2013 08:14:00 PM) - Al

I assume he's pitching over his head, but it sure is a pleasure to watch Hand pitch. 53 of 64 pitches for strikes tonight, and I think he had another inning or two in him.

I was just going to say that if the O's DFA Ishikawa, the Crew can use the 25 man spot opened by Gindl's demotion on him. That said, the article says the Yankees would jump at the chance to pick him up.

EDIT: The starter's pistol has been fired.

{Hopefully, no one was offended or injured by my usage of a gun reference.}

If only Benghazi, IRS and NSA got as much attention as Aaron Hernandez, George Zimmerman, and Paula Dean.--Kris Held, MD

Amen. 9.5 months ago, four Americans were killed, and we still have no idea who ordered special forces to "stand down" nor do we know where the president was after being told the embassy was under attack.

My guess is, both would prove him to be unconcerned and uncaring about anything except Vegas fundraisers and golf. They have every right to be afraid of their own incompetence.

Many businesses still supporting Paula Deen.

I am too.

She apparently said some things she regrets decades ago. She apologized and said she is not perfect. None of us are.

I'm still not sure why it's a story. Alec Baldwin has done a dozen more offensive things since Monday.

The irony is, if charges were brought, Martin should be the one being prosecuted.

Of course, because he has the misfortune of being a Latino that resembles a damn Caucasian, so the old media hopped aboard like the drunken jackals they are, and our president, once again, rushed to judgement with a fraction of the facts.

The show to try and minimize the ignorance of it all is an embarrassment, but what do you expect. Heck, they can call this an extended stimulus package, as it works as well as all the other Robin Hood schemes.

Bucks under team control for next season

Jennings
Ish Smith
Wolters

Mbah a Moute
Antetokoumpo

Udoh
Avon
Gooden
Ersan

Henson
Sanders

I thought the Bucks only had 7-8 players on the roster for next year, but I forgot Udoh and MaM, and in my mind, wasn't really counting Gooden. Of course, many were reporting that the Udoh/Ridnour swap rumored on draft night was completed, but would wait to be official until after 7/1, when the salary cap goes up and other factors come into play. Udoh is a nice role player, but as you can see, they have a ton of 4's. Ridnour is a 1, but has played a lot of 2 over the past few years, and moreso, would help protect the Bucks if they would decide not to match an extravagant offer for Brandon, or if they would do some sort of sign and trade with him (or I suppose a "match and trade" is also possible).

Top ten names (or so) in free agency that make sense and/or we might hear:

JR Smith--makes perfect sense, as he has played both wing spots and as Sixth Man of the Year, is a proven scorer. Has stated he wants to stay in New York, but Knicks will be limited financially by luxury tax, and they just drafted Tim Hardaway Jr, a similar, cheaper player. Shoots 3's and gets to the FT line, good rebounder for size as well. Made $2.8M last year, will be a popular target.

Chris Copeland--6-9 sharpshooter who can play either forward spot, finally caught on in NBA after over half a decade in Europe. Less than one assist and turnover per game, he is used to getting the ball and shooting it. Made $500K last year, will look to make at least the "mid level exception," about $4M per. Knicks can match any offer, but will struggle to with luxury tax ramifications.

Devin Harris--Harris is my NBA Sal Torres, a guy who I manage to find a spot for annually as either a free agent or trade target. From Wauwatosa and a former Badger, has said he would like to finish his career in MIL, and as a combo guard, might be a fit as a role player. On the downside, but still plenty left.

Kyle Korver--Another guy I've yearned for several years. One of best shooters in league, coming off best year since '07, under Larry Drew in ATL, and texted Drew to congratulate him when he got the Bucks' job. Nearly identical to Mike Dunleavy, who was a nice fit the past two seasons. Made $5M last year.

Mike Dunleavy--Spent time in Milwaukee growing up, chose to return as a FA, and said last year he enjoyed it. A nice fit at the 3 paired with MaM. Made $3.75M last year.

JJ Redick--I had written him off, as he has supposedly told friends he was not returning to MIL. However, everywhere you look, people are predicting he ends up in MIL because they have so much cash to spend, and will give him the most money/longest deal. The Bucks are $24M or so under the cap by my back of an envelope calculations.

Dorell Wright--Poor man's JR Smith, does everything except get to the line.

Luke Babbitt--Many wanted the Bucks to draft him. Not a bad defender/rebounder, offense is almost solely standing 20+ feet from the basket and hoisting jumpers. Poor man's Copeland.

Cole Aldrich--Hammond loves having big men in reserve. Aldrich is a solid defender, rebounder, and shot blocker

JJ Hickson--Undersized center, but hard nosed, controls paint.

Chase Budinger--One of those complementary types that seem to make others better, solid, unspectacular small forward.

And the irony is, Deen is a lefty too.

The difference is, she isn't an outspoken socialist style lefty, who hates capitalism and the free market...unless it means making millions as a no talent hack who, by the way, hates gays, women, Jews, and almost everyone.

I would go to Supercuts, but I'm afraid the incredibly self absorbed fools on their commercials may be there that day, and I'd be forced to kill them.

(6/28/2013 07:05:00 PM) - Al

I think we saw how PIT is four wins over their expected total...I haven't seen that kind of luck in decades. Funny spin, find holes, missed strike calls...it's difficult to believe that can even happen.

If this is the kind of good fortune they've experienced, they better hope it doesn't even out in the second half.

6/28/2013 07:05:00 PM

(6/28/2013 05:43:00 PM) - Al

Pirates have four more wins than they "should" and the Cards have four less. Now, will this "even out" over 162, or have they "stolen" eight games in the first half?

Probably a combo of both. If runs scored and prevented are a good indicator of true talent, they are probably not as good as SL, and likely to win fewer games in the second half. Of course, remember, the Orioles did this last year too, and somehow, lucked out the entire campaign.

6/28/2013 05:43:00 PM

(6/28/2013 05:35:00 PM) - Al

Hart will have surgery on his "other" knee, will miss season.

I suppose there may be a chance of him resigning a 1-2 year deal, as he will not be able to get full value coming off the injury, so he may sign for $3-5M per.

EDIT: And no way he is offered arby, as they would have to offer him so much he would almost be forced to accept it.

6/28/2013 05:35:00 PM

(6/28/2013 05:31:00 PM) - Al

Is it me, or does it rain every game the Crew plays in Pittsburgh?

Just too bad they lack the common sense to put a roof on it. The technology is available. It's like driving a car without power steering.

6/28/2013 05:31:00 PM

(6/28/2013 03:35:00 PM) - Al

It should be. The Rambling son was only taught to sign his name, and it made perfect sense.

Then last year, for whatever reason, he had to write damn near everything in cursive, which made him only hate writing. They simply have no consistency or idea why they teach what they teach.

6/28/2013 03:35:00 PM

(6/28/2013 03:25:00 PM) - Al

Alec Baldwin is an incredibly huge scumbag. Even Andy Cooper, a raging lib, wonders why.

6/28/2013 03:25:00 PM

(6/28/2013 03:22:00 PM) - Al

Burgos off DL, sent back to Nashville.

I'd say he's just a couple solid outings away from being back in the rotation, especially if Peralta continues to be inconsistent...not to mention Yo is on the market, and Kyle may be, if the return is sufficient.

6/28/2013 03:22:00 PM

(6/28/2013 01:08:00 PM) - Al

Rockies looking at pitchers, including Yo.

1. Yo has pitched terribly in Coors.

2. The Rockies adding pitching is like me adding a salad to each meal. I don't think it's coincidence that COL had the most success when they resembled a slow pitch softball team.

What's that old Doug line? You don't win in a hitter's park with pitching.

I'd look to add speed and defense (especially the OF's), but all eight of my position players would have to be average or above at the plate.

6/28/2013 01:08:00 PM

(6/28/2013 12:42:00 PM) - Al

Guess what?

It's working.

I know many folks want to believe higher taxes and giving platinum benefits to your political friends somehow sparks growth. If it did, Obama's economy wouldn't be in a five year malaise.

6/28/2013 12:42:00 PM

(6/28/2013 12:21:00 PM) - Al

I think the Nets are going to be old and broke, and very disappointed.

Garnett, Pierce, and Terry all played for the Celtics last season, and BOS barely won more contests than the Bucks. Right now, Brooklyn is deep, but they'll need to be, given their age. I'm not even sure if they're a 50 win team, never mind a title contender.

6/28/2013 12:21:00 PM

(6/28/2013 12:09:00 PM) - Al

Odd the Dodgers are so active in the trade market, they only have four more wins than the Crew.

Just a thought, if a player really wanted to stay with his current team, and could block trades to 10-15 teams, he could easily just leave the teams that aren't really contending at the moment and list the big market clubs that are...not 100%, but it's a start.

6/28/2013 12:09:00 PM

(6/28/2013 11:56:00 AM) - Al

Yo's no trade list is out. He likes the National League, it would appear.

Just saw a rumor Nate Wolters is headed to the Bucks from WASH. Doubt it, but that would be great.

EDIT: True. Traded Ledo for Wolters, gave up future 2nd rounder.

EDIT 2: Breathe. Washington took Wolters. Then traded him to Sixers. Sixers moved Wolters to Bucks for Ledo and then moved Ledo to Atlanta.--Andy Katz

I could have sworn Wolters was a Wisconsin kid, but he's from St. Cloud, MN. Played college ball at South Dakota State, combo guard.

6/27/2013 10:42:00 PM

(6/27/2013 09:46:00 PM) - Al

The Bucks are going to get a quality player in the 2nd round if they take the best player available. At least ten projected first rounders have slipped due to all the foreign players chosen.

6/27/2013 09:46:00 PM

(6/27/2013 09:22:00 PM) - Al

I don't think we've ever seen a more embarrassing performance on ESPN (since Nate Silver, of course) than Bill Simmons' "analysis" on the draft.

He's not funny, and has no idea what he's talking about. He's one of these guys who finds everything ironic and humorous...he was just fascinated that a Patriot League player was drafted...of course, that means nothing to anyone with a brain.

6/27/2013 09:22:00 PM

(6/27/2013 09:03:00 PM) - Al

Burgos appears healthy, 5 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 K at Nashville tonight. Might be part of the rotation soon if 100%.

(6/27/2013 08:53:00 PM) - Al

John Hammond says they took the best player on the board, and that he'll be in MIL next season.

I guess he is not being traded, but I think he has something to come. Trading up in the 2nd round? Trading a future 2nd rounder for one this year?

6/27/2013 08:53:00 PM

(6/27/2013 08:31:00 PM) - Al

Looks like I was wrong.

John Hammond says Bucks tracked Antentokounmpo and thought they had a chance to get him at 15. "Sky is the limit" is the GM's assessment.--Jim Pachske

I'm still thinking something will go down, though maybe it does not involve trading Ant...this guy.

EDIT: The Mavericks ending up with Shane Larkin and their constant pursuit of Jennings makes me say "hmm."

6/27/2013 08:31:00 PM

(6/27/2013 08:14:00 PM) - Al

Bucks may have chosen 6-9 forward from Greece for someone else. If not, it may signify a total rebuild.

ADDED: Searching for him on Twitter, both TOR and DAL were said to really like him, trying to trade for him, leaving him to play in Europe for a couple years. Remember, DAL is said to like Brandon Jennings, and TOR now had former Bucks' GM Jeff Weltman as their #2 basketball guy. Time will tell, but this reeks of a trade piece to me.

Per friend of Ramblings Jim, Sean Halton about to join Crew.

Sean is a big RH batter, 1B for the most part, but has also played the corner OF slots the past couple years.

I would assume he will either replace Scooter Gennett, who needs to play more than he has of late with Rickie hitting better, or Yuni B.

Halton will need to be put on the 40 man, though they can easily make that move.

We just discussed Halton the other day here

1000 OPS in June, scalding the ball. Would be an improvement at 2B for many teams, would be a nice 1B/2B/DH role player for anyone, though his salary is high for a reserve.

(6/25/2013 04:28:00 PM) - Al

In order to land Smith, though, the Celtics need to pull off a deal for Pierce that will net them a trade exception. Because teams over the salary cap can’t take on salary without sending back matching salaries, Boston’s options are limited to teams under the cap. That’s why two teams that have been connected to a Pierce deal have been Cleveland and Milwaukee.

But sources told Sporting News that there is some trepidation when it comes to trading for Pierce, because he has let it be known that if he must leave Boston, he wants to play for a contender. He could do that—most likely joining Rivers in Los Angeles—if the Celtics buy him out. But not if he is traded. The Cavaliers, for example, don’t want to trade for Pierce if he does not want to be there.
A source indicated that any potential Pierce-to-Cleveland deal is, “a longshot.”
There is some skepticism about Milwaukee’s interest in Pierce, too. The Bucks were close to landing Smith via trade in February, and Smith is willing to go to Milwaukee in free agency. While the Celtics would be able to offer Smith a deal starting at $15 million—the value of the trade exception they’d get for trading Pierce—the Bucks could offer a full max deal, starting at $17.5 million.
If the Bucks are in a better position to land Smith in free agency, they would not have much incentive to instead take on the 35-year-old Pierce, and help Boston get Smith instead.--TSN

The Brewers will "gladly listen" on third baseman Aramis Ramirez, as well as any position player other than Jean Segura, Carlos Gomez, and Ryan Braun.  I wonder if that means names such as Jonathan Lucroy and Norichika Aoki will be in play next month.

Execs who spoke to Stark seem divided on whether the Brewers want to trade Yovani Gallardo, with one saying, "To be honest, I think they would love to move him."--Stark, via MLBTR

I think Doug knows how much the Angels overpaid for Greinke, and is hoping history repeats. It may, especially if Yo continues pitching well.  I don't think he "would love to" move Yo, but knows his trade value of 2-3 good young players is better for the current team.

As for Aoki and Lucroy, both are under team control for years, and Jon signed a team friendly contract. That said, that makes them more valuable to others as well, and you know what...I love Marty Maldonado, and I really like Logan Schafer as well. They may not be as good, but they're plenty capable stopgaps, and inexpensive.

One thing you have to keep in mind is the Crew has 8-10 young SP's that look to be solid prospects (with all due respect to TINSTAAPP), and while some will get hurt, some will fail and end up as relievers, and some will just hit a wall...they will all need to pitch. Mark A will never want to do a full rebuild, but it's difficult not to see the writing on the wall...this team has won 77 or more games six straight seasons, and "success cycles," are very tough to maintain for a small market club more than 4-5 years at a time

First public mention of Yo being available, though Doug makes sure he informs everyone to not bid cheap.

It's not a slam dunk that I'm going to trade Yovani or Kyle Lohse, but you never know. A lot to consider.--Doug

And that was Doug telling other teams he will listen, on both Yo and Kyle.

As of this second, they are open for business.

All we can hope for, is if a deal is made, we get a Greinke like haul, an upper echelon prospect (like Segura) and a couple solid others (like Hellweg and Pena). Yo, given that he has up to 2.5 years remaining on his contract and is pitching as well as he ever has of late, might just be able to land a similar package. Lohse is unlikely, though if packaged with a reliever, could bring back the non elite (non Segura) part of that deal.

Pirates 3rd in NL in SP ERA, but look how few IP they have...more than an inning a game less than other top teams.

Grilli and Melancon both on pace for 80 games and about 80 IP...unlikely they can remain effective and healthy doing that. They probably need to pick up a SP and a couple RP's to maintain 90+ wins. They might be able to fall off a bit and still win enough to win a wildcard, but it's tough not to expect them to have a natural fade given the numbers.

For the record: there's a reason why regimes hesitated to disrespect us between 2001-2009. It was because of that unilateral cowboy Bush.--Moe Lane

Yep. Hong Kong just giggled at the USA and let Snowden fly out...could not care less about retribution. They know full well Obama is all talk.

As I've said often, we used to be a superpower, and may be again someday. Not for the next 3.5 years, however.

Gomez thought he was closer to the wall, expected to hit it before landing. If he's out for any length of time, that could well prompt Doug to sell.

1B out, LF out, CF out, 3B playing on one leg...teams do not go on 22-5 runs with half a team out.

The Orioles can forget about acquiring Yovani Gallardo as they are on his ten-team no-trade list and the Brewers would prefer to make a clean deal with no restrictions.  Meanwhile, the Brewers' pitchers are getting hot at the right time - Gallardo, Francisco Rodriguez, and John Axford have all looked strong as of late and could draw interest from contending clubs.--Rosenthal

Those three names are already popping up repeatedly. Ramirez is banged up and owed a lot in '13. Weeks is hitting, but many teams will hesitate because of his low overall BA and money owed next season. Hart has not played, and may not until the deadline.

Actually Al, a couple weekends ago, I went with my girlfriend on a four day weekend to San Diego, with a 24 hour stay in Vegas. We had this planned since March. A few weeks before, we got an invite to my first cousin's wedding. Can't be two places at once, so we sent a card with our regrets.

Had a great time on our trip, got home, my mom was just furious, because I was the only first cousin not there.

[We had not told her because I knew she assumed we'd be there.]

Anyway, this morning, we had a family brunch, and all but a couple of our close relatives were there. Most everyone thought we had been at the wedding, but had to miss the reception. Talk about no one missing you. They opened our card along with all the rest, so it was just like we had been there.

Chance

Lesson learned. We had 150 people at our wedding (mostly the bride's side, as it was in her hometown, two plus hours away from mine, and I'm sure more than a few people said, "Al wouldn't come to our wedding if it was his own back yard," but several of our closest friends had to miss it due to other weddings or work.

I feel the same way about this as I do about unnecessary lawn work...you spend a very limited time on this planet, and you spend a lot of that doing things for work you probably dislike doing. Do what you want in your free time.

SABR historian Rod Nelson reports that Caleb Gindl, who debuted with the Brewers on June 15, is only the third major-leaguer officially listed at 5 feet 7 inches and 200-plus pounds. Gindl joins Angel Salome who played for the Brewers in 2008 and Bill Byers who played for the Cardinals in 1904.

2 of the 3 playing in MIL the past few years is not coincidence. Doug does not care if you're chubby and short if you can hit. Classic case of looking at what a player can do and not worrying about warts. That's why Thornburg is still starting too.

Salome might well be the starting catcher today if he had not suffered from mental troubles.

Raising the minimum wage kills jobs.

As I often say, it flies in the face of freedom as well. If my neighbor says he needs someone to help him prep newspapers for delivery from 3AM-7AM, and offers to pay me $5 an hour to do so, that arrangement should not need the approval of the federal government.

Worrying about such trivial matters also keeps the government from doing what's important, which is defending our nation and defending the Constitution from the favor of the month club.

6.0 scoreless IP, 68 pitches for Hellweg. Sounds have turned season-high 4 DP's behind him. Nashville leads 1-0, heading to the 7th.

They've adjusted Hellweg, he's throwing 95+ but not striking out many and walking almost as many. I assume they've made him a sinkerball pitcher who is now "pitching to contact."

Most players are pretty beat up this time of year. My goodness, if you count the exhibition season, they've been playing eight months straight...about 115 games.

Yet another reason not to overreact when a guy scores 17 instead of 30.

Really like Caleb Gindl.

Not sure if he'll fit in on the 25 man in MIL with Schafer also in the mix, but he'll have a nice career, likely in a reserve/platoon role. Can play all three OF spots, will probably pick up a 1B glove soon, and has pop from the left side. That's a near perfect fit for many teams.

Tremendous outing by Hand, 52 pitches isn't as big a deal as stopping several times and then warming up again.

Kinetic energy isn't a theory, it exists.

Hard not to root for a guy like Donovan, as he'd had to prove himself at every level, likely improving a little each year, and still is pretty much "just another guy," still not on the staff if not for many injuries. You give him Peralta's stuff, he might never allow a run.

As I've said many times, just don't go. No one will miss you, and you can do whatever you want. You only have so many weekends, and if you spend them all doing stuff you don't want to do, you're going to be a frustrated camper.

Of course, some people like social gatherings that involve people you barely know; baked chicken breast with a side of canned veggies; and sitting around discussing weather, those that have passed away, and the like.

Anyone who's surprised an Obama supporter like Paula Deen uses racist language has obviously never been to New England.--David Freddoso

I've never been to NE, but I haven't heard certain racial language in 15-20 years. That said, as Ms. Deen said, she is a woman of a certain age, and such language used to be commonplace. If he were alive today, Sam Clemens would have to explain, often, that the world was a different place a century and a half ago.

The Food Network simply decided not to renew her contract, I assume to avoid controversy. If they stop airing the 200+ hours of her programming they have in the vault, I'll think more of it.

And yes, it is funny to see no one reporting Deen's presidential support...if she had campaigned for Romney or Santorum, it'd be in the lead sentence.

Because the old media is unbiased. And has no agenda.

I don't mean to be oversimplistic here, but it sure seems to me Ron is using Henderson in the 8th or 9th based on which inning has the better hitters due up, or, if you choose, he uses KRod when the weaker hitters are up.

Is this because they have more faith in Jim, or to artificially deflate KRod's numbers and increase his value...dunno.

I admit, with the Cubs looking like a strong franchise, and with the Cards, Reds, and Pirates all strong right now, the NL Central looks like a tough race short term at least.

Problem with expansion of entitlements isn't cost, it's the lives it destroys by making dependent on government.--Governor Walker

Well, it's also the cost, but I know what he's saying. That's the why the war on poverty has been a failure, and the left's only idea is to double down. They don't understand human nature, as that's why they are the party of unintended consequences.

Look at the concept...we have people that are poor, so we're going to make them not poor by giving them a check every month. Anyone can see that suddenly, the incentive to work is all but gone, as let's not forget, being "lower class" in the USA is upper class anywhere else in the world.

We are the only country in the world whose poor are fat (raises hand, guilty), and being "poor" means you have a house or apartment, a car, cable/satellite TV, AC, washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave, video game system, two TV's, and cell phone(s).

This is why people cross deserts and oceans to get here. The only thing we need to "change" is the contempt the left has for how we achieved it.

Mark Appel signs, Boras manages to get him about $1.5M less than slot.

Heh. There's overrated, and then there's Scott Boras. I do have to credit his marketing, as he manages to get a percentage of every contract he bungles.

MLB is getting to be closer and closer to the NBA, as with max contracts, having an agent just means you're paying a cut to someone for getting what you were going to get anyway. With the draft being slotted, the first few seasons being team controlled, and the arby years being rather easy to project, unless you want to do a lot of off field card shows and "buy this car" type of stuff, it seems like a very good idea to pay an attorney hourly and keep your 5%.

I don't see it as a problem, I see it as an once in a lifetime opportunity. So did Lincoln. Sure, we've all heard about the evils of government meddling and the death of the free market, but now, we're seeing it...despite trillions being put into the system, it's not working, because no one has any incentive to make it work (skin in the game).

It's almost as if being a community organizer doesn't properly prepare one to lead. Note, however, it does prepare one to bitch...even though all the ideas are his own, as are the policies.

Only the clueless and unprepared complain about the things they control.

In the early 1970's, the US Post Office said overnight delivery was not cost effective, nor was it feasible. Today, despite complete apathy from the public, the postal service union is running commercials insisting the USA will fall flat on its face if Saturday delivery is ended. My local post office is closed from 10:45-11:30 each day. I have yet to find a place of business other than this that refuses to do business in the middle of the day.

Oh, by the way, they manage to lose $30M every single day. Even on the days they're closed.

Personally, I vote for more of the same.

Adam points out Estrada and Narveson will be back in about a week...Marco will go into the rotation, and Chris will work with the coaches and be the 12th man on the staff, as he is out of options and as a LHP that can hit 92 mph on the gun (hopefully, no was was offended by the term), would be claimed if DFA'd.

If no one is injured in the meantime, someone pitching pretty well will have to go down. Hand has options and will be one sent down, but the other guy will be tough. Figaro, Henderson, Kintzler, and Axford all have options, but are all pitching at a mediocre level, though Brandon is the least effective since Axford "found it" in early May.

Dr. Helen discusses why we stopped admiring men and why we now make fun of them.

Note the mention of "I am for equal rights for women, but not special privileges." I can't tell you how many guys I've known that got divorced and the kids went to their ex who had alcohol or drug problems, a criminal history, and so on. One guy was supposed to pick up his child (ren) at 6PM Friday, and he got done with work at 4:30, so he went to his former mother in law's house, where his wife and the kids lived. He asked the "mil" if she'd mind if he'd get them early, and she said, "Of course not." He took the kids, took them out to eat and then to a movie. Got home at 9:30, police car outside his place. He didn't think anything of it, he and the kids got out and went in the house. A few minutes later, cops knocked on the door, guns out, and arrested him for kidnapping...called the social worker to take the children, as no one answered his ex's phone. Spent the entire weekend in jail. Monday in court, judge took away visiting rights until they "get it all straightened out." DA pulled the charges, apologized to him. Didn't see his kids for six months. When court date came around, he told his side of the story. They asked mil if that's what happened, she said that was accurate. Judge looked through paperwork, acted confused, and finally said, "So, why are we here?" Ex wife's lawyer said he broke their custody agreement, 6PM Friday to 6PM Sunday, every other week. Judge said, "Did you not hear her mother said it was fine he took them an hour early? Please tell me there's more to this than your client holding a grudge and filing a false report knowing it would take months to crawl through the court system." He threw the case out, and then asked to see his wife's lawyer in chambers...you could hear the yelling in the courtroom. Came back, judge gave him custody, same conditions as before. Said he was sorry he couldn't do anything about the past.

That's the way men are treated in our justice system. To say it's slanted is to understate it.

I welcome him to the party. I certainly don't agree with the GOP on everything, but 80-90% is plenty good enough, and I sense the Republicans will be moving closer to the Libertarian viewpoint in the near future, out of fiscal necessity if nothing else.

Note his explanation...it was the party of freedom 160 years ago, and it still is. As much as the left tries to fib, remember incorrectly, or divert the subject, history cannot be rewritten.

The left's model city...bankrupt, with an hour response time...to emergency calls.

Trouble in paradise. I, for one, am shocked Detroit hasn't transformed itself into the utopian metro area that Cuba is known for.

Note what happened when they did not control costs, they just kept raising taxes...and anyone with an ounce of common sense moved to the suburbs, or even better, to a state that doesn't punish success.

The humor is, some fail to see that this is the exact path we're on. You don't manage to put up 70% of the debt in five years as we've accumulated in 232 (and saved the world more than once) without being totally out of control.

Al,

Sean Halton continues to hit at AAA, and while he is unlikely to be a star, he looks like he might be a decent 1B/OF reserve, and a bench bat with HR power late in the game. Thoughts?

Cliff

I would agree with your assessment of his ceiling, he might find a niche as a platoon/reserve, especially with Hunter Morris quite possibly penciled in as the 1B as early as next season, and as of yet, Morris has not hit LHP much. Halton has been playing mostly LF/RF this season, and while a natural 1B, has played some at 3B in the past too. He's probably correctly placed at AAA right now, and is hindered in his quest for promotion by not being on the 40 man.

His ticket to the majors is to continue hitting 2B's and HR's, as RH power is always coveted. If a team called Doug and said they wanted him to be their 1B, I'm sure Melvin would make a decision on him, as Halton is not an upper echelon prospect, and deserves a chance if a team is willing to give it to him. He's 26, so he's probably as good as he's ever going to be. While a 850 OPS is decent, he plays almost half his games in the offense friendly PCL hitter's parks out west, so a corner IF/OF should probably be putting up a 900+ OPS.

In closing, good AAA depth. but is going to have to earn every promotion. He needs to hit his way onto the 40 man or impress someone enough to take him in the Rule 5, because his versatility may well allow him to stick.

The Bucks will hold a free-agent camp Tuesday through Thursday for players who are not draft-eligible.

A total of 23 players have been invited, including 12 with previous NBA experience. Among those attending are former Utah Jazz guard Sundiata Gaines, former Philadelphia 76ers forward Craig Brackins and former New Jersey and Brooklyn Nets small forward Damion James. Former Marquette guard Dwight Buycks and former Ohio State guard David Lighty also will participate.--JS

This is one of the best ideas I've heard, because there's no reason the 13th-15th men on a roster can't be younger fellas with some ceiling, who will sign for less money and usually on non guaranteed deals. Often, the only difference between a NBDL player and a late first round/early second round pick is opportunity, or words on a scouting report like "tweener" or "hustle."

(6/18/2013 11:30:00 AM) - Al

The obvious goes right over the heads of the casuals.

While most are wondering if Weeks' better hitting of late is related to being hit by a pitch (some days, I'm embarrassed to be lumped together with such immature halfwits), better health, or just an inevitable return to career norms, I chose to take a more common sense approach.

Since May 22nd, Rickie has put up far better numbers:

before 5/22--.282./267, 549 OPS
since 5/22---..379/.623, 1002 OPS

Since 5/22, Rickie has started versus 6 RHP's and 7 LHP's. He's always had far better numbers versus LHP, and has continued to do so this season. Simply put, starting 5/22, he's had a far higher percentage of PA's versus opposite hand pitchers. This has probably had a twofold effect:

1. More PA's versus his stronger side, which means better overall numbers, which has given the illusion of more success.

2. More confidence at all times, which has led to a better performance versus his weaker side as well.

Basically, this is what is often referred to as "setting up a player for success." It's most often used with young players, they play about half the time, at what seems like random intervals, but in reality, they are not playing when the opponent is starting a pitcher that they are unlikely to have success against.

Weeks is probably seeing the ball better due to facing more southpaws, and having more success. Success leads to success. So does confidence.

As I have said numerous times, I am pro choice, though unless it involves rape or incest, or the mother's life is at risk, I'm anti abortion. However, because I can separate common sense from politics for a split second, I realize that since a child 0-6 months along is extremely unlikely to survive outside the womb of the woman carrying the child (and yes, it is a child, your use of medical terminology only makes you appear more guilty), I do believe she has the right to terminate her pregnancy in a free society.

How these goons can sleep at night knowing they are killing kids perfectly capable of a normal life...you realize, the exact same thing Gosnell was convicted of murder for...I guess it is safe to say that to them, it's just politics, whether it's the life of a child, or ensuring a business owner is unable to function due to extremely high taxes and onerous regulations that exist solely to be onerous.

I'm having trouble figuring out how anyone on the left is not a hypocrite, but this is nothing new...Obama has stood on both sides of several issues and is every bit as defiant on his second position as he was his first and justifies it by...pretending it never happened, thanks old media, bury your head a bit deeper, I hear China is beautiful in June.

That said, today, I'm even happier they're not on my side. Choosing to defend those that happily kill the unborn that could easily survive right now is one minute step from genocide. Sleep well.

Loser of the day: Marty Beil is losing what little membership he has left in AFSMCE. Since Act 10, AFSCME membership has gone from 22,000 to just 3,000. Wow.--Right WI

No one would admit it, but the fuss was not about the platinum benefits, though that's what the unions proudly lied to their members and insisted it was about. It was all about the right to take dues directly out of their paychecks, and basically forcing those who believe in the free market to be a union member against their will. Without that, they are all but dead.

The left despises freedom, because they insist they can do it better, by demonizing the successful. They don't believe in history.

The right believes in letting competition take care of itself and except for keeping things fair, getting out of the way. The left believes everyone should be equal and work for the common good of all, as long as they can decide what the common good is.

Sadly, it thinks the best way to do this is to make everyone a have not.

Travis is one of those guys who you know was a solid contributor because the casuals didn't like him. Good defense, good OBP, good gap power. He was a near perfect bench bat. No doubt they'd have more wins if he'd have stuck around, but with Hart, Gamel, and Green, who could have imagined they'd be using their 4th, 5th, and 6th best options...maybe even deeper, because Morris is not on the 40 man.
