(9/30/2013 09:27:00 PM) - Al

Obama is going to spend extra money to "close" monuments that are usually open 24/7.

That, my friends, is leadership in a comedy of errors.

I don't see Butler passing through unclaimed, his AAA numbers mirror Sean Halton's, and he seems far more athletic.

And probably will again next season. Luck is not repeatable.

Dale Sveum let go by the Cubs, Theo says nothing to do with wins and losses. Probably his inability to work with his younger players, a bad sign for a team building with youth.

Found out today that a 13.1 sticker on a car means its owner has ran a half marathon.

What's sad is, another embarrassing incident happens every single day in public schools. They don't act like they care, nor do they act like they put any effort into what they do.

(9/30/2013 10:00:00 AM) - Al

I, for one, am shocked.

It's almost as if the data does not support the overreaction, so they just ignore it and hope the rubes won't notice.

9/30/2013 10:00:00 AM

(9/30/2013 09:00:00 AM) - Al

Now that the season is over, I'll start compiling some lists as far as the future. First up, top twelve free agents likely to be signed by the Crew...and yes, that includes guys that have played for MIL. In no particular order...

Corey Hart (history, 1B, cheap one year deal)
Francisco Rodriguez (history, might be only team who offers a chance to close)
Mike Morse (power bat, 1B, might thrive in Miller Park, might be looked at only as reserve by others)
Alexi Casilla (2B/SS reserve, great speed)
Clint Barmes (2B/SS reserve, plus defender, hits LHP)
Mark Reynolds (1B/3B, hits LHP)
Michael Young (longshot, but if he wants to play, has played 1B/3B)
Chris Capuano (history, won't get a guaranteed rotation spot anywhere)
Joba Chamberlain (might thrive out of limelight, good raw numbers)
Joe Smith (while others chase bigger names, Crew might go after him as a solid 7th/8th inning guy)
Matt Thornton (have wanted for years, lefty who gets RH's out, very consistent)
Phil Hughes (see Joba, better stuff than results)

I'll throw in a few more, guys who I think will have to sign minor league deals this offseason...

Frank Francisco
Wilson Betemit
Jeff Baker (lefty killer, if Weeks dealt, may fit in as platoon partner at 2B, versatile)

Diamondbacks won 81 games, remade the team around "grit," then won 81 again. I'd like to think we just quantified the actual value of grit.--Zachary Levine

The same people who believe in grit don't believe in math. It's all about scoring more runs and allowing fewer. The rest is for the lawyers.

9/29/2013 06:41:00 PM

(9/29/2013 04:30:00 PM) - Al

The Crew finish with 74 victories on the year. For the past nine seasons (that's every season since 2004) the Crew has won 74 or more games.

How many teams can say that?

The Yankees, Cardinals, A's, Angels, Rangers, and Brewers. In other words, big markets (SL is a medium sized market, but due to history and regional fan base, tends to play up), along with Billy Beane and Doug Melvin.

Think about that a few minutes.

Another way of looking at it? BAL has won 74 games 3 out of 9 years. DC (who was MON back in '04) has won 74 4 of 9. PIT...twice. COL, despite having perhaps the greatest home field advantage in sports, 4. The Royals 2 of 9. SEA 4 of 9.

If it makes you feel better, you'll note many of the teams who performed most poorly in this exercise are coming off of solid campaigns...pould seem to be a roof that the "success cycle" exists.

Too bad Davis is out tomorrow, as the Mets start a lefty. I assume Gindl will play LF, as he has handled LHP pretty well, both in MIL and AAA.

9/28/2013 10:59:00 PM

(9/28/2013 08:38:00 PM) - Al

Got an email saying the opposing team's broadcasters having very nice things to say about the Crew, many have noticed their record and play, especially the rotation, and playing shorthanded.

Said Cubs' TV team of Kasper and Deshaies said something to the effect of, "The Cubs and Brewers have similar records, but a vastly different outlook for next year. The Cubs are looking to continue the youth trend and move closer to where they want to be. The Brewers? They look to be right back in it. They have a very good, very deep rotation, and with Braun back, think of the battle in the NL Central."

Good to hear. We're not talking about a good 10 or 20 game stretch. This is a good team that had a bad month, and their three best offensive players got about 500 AB's total, rather than a piece.

9/28/2013 08:38:00 PM

(9/28/2013 08:21:00 PM) - Al

Counsell did a nice job today of explaining how the braintrust uses defensive metrics and "looks ahead" instead of at the past. No one cares if someone hit 30 home runs last year, they only care about what a player will do in the next 1-3 seasons.

His description of the metrics being "not perfect, but they verify what scouts say" was brilliant. I've often said Gomez is the best CF I've ever seen (funny, I used to get arguments about that, but not for a couple years), and the numbers bear that out. Sometimes, the numbers don't seem to make sense (Adam Jones has won Gold Gloves, but is often negative). Schafer looks great and has great metrics, considering his limited time.

As he said, they are a work in progress....I think they often overstate both good and bad, in order to try and be more relevant. As good as Gomez is, I don't think he's saved 37 runs. I don't think Choo should be -18 or whatever he is either.

9/28/2013 08:21:00 PM

(9/28/2013 08:07:00 PM) - Al

Manager Ron Roenicke confirmed after game that Henderson, Kintzler, Wooten all unavailable due to recent workloads.--JS

Not any surprise at all. Ron would not tell us anyway, but I have to wonder if at least one of them may be injured, as Henderson especially, has had decreasing velocity of late.

9/28/2013 08:07:00 PM

(9/28/2013 07:12:00 PM) - Al

Nice to have your long reliever, in this case, like reliever #9/10, walk in and hit 96-97 on the gun.

All that collecting velocity has paid off.

9/28/2013 07:12:00 PM

(9/28/2013 07:10:00 PM) - Al

Strike three, working on strike four.

These guys remain awful, right to the end.

9/28/2013 07:10:00 PM

(9/28/2013 06:59:00 PM) - Al

Double switch makes team weaker defensively, but Figaro is almost certainly the last arm. Gomez might well be the next pitcher.

9/28/2013 06:59:00 PM

(9/28/2013 06:42:00 PM) - Al

If those three are truly unavailable, it might be Figaro the rest of the way regardless. Gonzalez not making it through his inning really hurts now.

9/28/2013 06:42:00 PM

(9/28/2013 06:22:00 PM) - Al

Wooten, Henderson, and Kintzler must have been given the day off after working two days in a row. As much as the team and true fans want to win, common sense has to be used.

9/28/2013 06:22:00 PM

(9/28/2013 05:42:00 PM) - Al

Still can't believe the Brewers got Blazek, a guy that throws 95+, for a month of Axford. I must be missing something here.

9/28/2013 05:42:00 PM

(9/28/2013 05:06:00 PM) - Al

I think I predicted Mike Guerrero's promotion a couple weeks ago. Not sure if John Shelby will lose his "uniform" status since he works in the cage during the games. Counsell got cut off before he could finish his thought.

I assume this will allow Darnell Coles to move up to AAA as well, probably keeping him happy for another season as well.

Mike will be partially getting a spot because of his ability to speak Spanish. Been awkward I'm sure to have to have another player translate at times.

9/28/2013 05:06:00 PM

(9/28/2013 03:25:00 PM) - Al

Gomez wants 40 SB's, he may well try for 3B.

9/28/2013 03:25:00 PM

(9/28/2013 03:24:00 PM) - Al

I guarantee you Nelson is listed higher on the offseason board than Hellweg. Strike throwers are low maintenance, Hellweg is not. As of today, I'd say Jimmy is #6 going into Maryvale.

9/28/2013 03:24:00 PM

(9/28/2013 03:04:00 PM) - Al

A complete and utter disregard for common sense. It is painful to observe, never mind be a psrt of.

9/28/2013 03:04:00 PM

(9/28/2013 03:01:00 PM) - Al

I can't imagine Billy Hamilton won't be on the roster if they have a separate one for the wildcard game...after all, you just need one SP. However, I don't know how that works.

9/28/2013 03:01:00 PM

(9/28/2013 02:20:00 PM) - Al

Hunter Pence and Corey Hart are almost statistical twins.

Pence signs for 5y/$90M. Corey must be rubbing his knees in disgust today.

Allow me to go on the record as hating this deal for SF. Pence is a fine player, but he's several years past his mythical prime, and they are paying him as if he's 26. I believe this is called paying for past production instead of expected production.

9/28/2013 02:20:00 PM

(9/28/2013 02:12:00 PM) - Al

Not a very tender display of affection, but good to see Cecil Fielder and Prince shaking hands in public. Prince is supposedly going through a divorce, so maybe that's helped him set the differences aside.

9/28/2013 02:12:00 PM

(9/28/2013 02:05:00 PM) - Al

The Brewers are 53-54 since June 1st. You can do a little better by cherry picking the numbers, but you also make them meaningless.

The last 2/3rd's of the season, they are a .500 team without any PA's from Hart, and limited input from Ramirez and Braun. Granted, they had some positives from KRod and Axford.

Be interesting to see if Counsell leaks any info of any consequence on today's broadcast. I'm especially wondering about Hart...there are some other free agent 1B who could possibly be signed to a one year contract (Mike Morse, Kevin Youkils, Casey Kotchman, Adam Lind, Mark Reynolds, maybe even Justin Morneau with his post concussion crap)....but none will be better than Corey...if he's healthy, of course.

Everyone rooting for a three way tie in the AL wildcard. I don't have any horses in the race myself, so I suppose that would be as interesting as any other scenario.

If I understood it correctly, TEX is the winner in the event of a three way tie, because they get a free ride into the wildcard game.

EDIT: Nope, I had it backwards...CLE and TB will have two chances to win one game, while TEX will only have one. Winner of CLE/TB Monday faces TEX Tuesday, two winners play Wednesday.

Good to see Allen Craig taking so long to recover from a sprained foot. Makes me feel better about myself missing a couple weeks of work a score ago.

I did the same to my foot 20 summers past and I've never been the same, still unable to use a ladder painlessly and it took a good couple weeks before I could walk on it. You're really not able to tape it up to protect it (well, you can, but it does very little), so after a couple years of taping and tying my spikes really tight (that helped more than taping), it just wasn't any fun playing softball having to worry about reinjury, so I gave it up.

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt
limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US
Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend
on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our
Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America's debt
weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that,
'the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of
bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren.
America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans
deserve better.--Obama, 2006

If they told me I had six months to live, I'd marry Mariano Rivera's retirement...it'd seem like five years.

Nothing bores me more than media created "history." When Obama was elected, I said it had never even occurred to me a black man would not be elected president at some point, so it meant nothing to me. It'll be the same for a woman someday. Some, who do not believe in the greatness that is the USA, weren't intelligent enough to see the inevitable.

Rivera was a fine closer, but so was Trevor Hoffman. The difference? Well, one played in more playoff games, but mostly, one played his career in the biggest media market in the world.

Gomez suspended for a game, no ATL players appear to have been.

I feel Freeman's and McCann's actions were worse, but this could be because of ATL still playing meaningful games.

How in the world can McCann still be in the game? These umps are as clueless as it gets. Every single crew is more worthless then the next.

EDIT: I do find it amusing the Braves are so upset after all but forfeiting Monday's game. They can't seem to decide if they are serious about giving 100% or not. To be truthful, many teams call it in this time of year...players don't play if they are not feeling good, or just because.

Talking to the Rambling brother online today, noticed that BAL has scored more runs this year and allowed fewer than last. That impossible to repeat +20 wins in one run games proved to be too much, as they are -14 this season. Luck really helps, and balancing out a small sample sure doesn't help.

Remember that next season, as the Pirates have five more wins than their run differential would lead you to guess. I've never found a pattern among teams that have won far more than they "should," though I have noticed they all seem to have lights out bullpen guys, 2-3 guys in the 8th/9th innings especially. I have yet to find a site that keeps track of bullpen ERA in the 7th/8th/9th, but I bet they would be excellent.

Sickels on Scooter. Does not mention his trouble hitting LHP, though he is still young enough to improve.

I love Scooter, and have long proclaimed all he does is hit. He's still young enough to have some room for growth/improvement too. Those who failed to see him as a prospect are casuals who failed to take age, age at level, and how poorly 2B hit into consideration. He's not going to put up a 900 OPS like he did last month, but even a 725-750 OPS is well above average if he can play a decent 2B.

I worry about "smaller" guys like Scooter and Segura staying healthy, and that will always be a concern. That said; Gamel, Green, and Hart's injuries make good health appear to be a crapshoot, and it often is.

Watching the final episode of SVU from last season. Detective Benson, who has been on since the beginning of the show, 1999, is now 49...and is far better looking than she was then.

Both my dog and I are jealous at her ability to age so gracefully. I don't think I've seen a mature woman looking that good since Sophia Loren in Grumpier Old Men.

The Rambling son started in a charter school a few weeks ago, and loves it thus far. The emails I received when I complained about his old public school, many with words like "dumpster fire" and "self appointed rulers of the world," speak for themselves. I was very unimpressed with his teacher last year, who misspelled tons of words on every take home letter and who didn't even get the class through all the multiplication and division tables (I learned those in 3rd grade, you know, the Rambling son has to pause for ten seconds to tell you what 9x8 is...and he was in the gifted, accelerated 5th grade class).

9/25/2013 02:16:00 PM

(9/25/2013 02:12:00 PM) - Al

The other day I compared Estrada to Gallardo, sort of fitting in with the often contrarian theme of Ramblings.

One thing I've heard lately is that the '14 Crew should be better solely because Braun will be back. I question it, because Davis, Gindl, and even Schafer have been somewhere between passable and very solid. So, let's take a look at LF production this year compared to others (which would have been mostly Braun).

2013--.336/.459, 795 OPS, 3rd in NL, 92 simple runs created
2012--.392/.578, 970, 1st (2nd was 870, crikeys), 136 src
2011--.392/.581, 973, 1st (3rd was 771, goodness), 137 src

So, if Ryan returns healthy next season, it should be a massive improvement, 44-45 runs equals 4.5 wins, using the simple rule of ten. Of course, there are some that wonder if he will be as good, but to be honest, as far as we know, he's tested positive one time, and he's been outstanding for ages...not to mention, no one actually knows if they actually increase production...for the most part, they have been proven only to help in recovery time, as does cortisone and any number of painkillers.

Just to not forget defense, Braun has played 3000 innings in LF the past three years, and has been worth +1.2 UZR, and +14 DRS. I use 1200 innings as a "full season," so he's actually been worth about six runs a season on defense, treating UZR and DRS equally (I prefer UZR, but, so be it). The other LF's this year have been -0.1 using UZR and +6 DRS, in 850 innings, all the positive is Schafer, meaning about +4.5 in a full season...we'll call it a push, as defensive metrics, are, at best, a better estimate than measurement.

Still, if Braun is able to be 100% and mentally strong, I have little doubt LF will improve by 3+ wins.  Don't forget, Ryan turns 30 in November, so he has likely peaked, but as a good athlete, his decline will likely be slow. Even though the LF replacements have been plenty decent, one forgets how valuable a healthy Ryan Braun is.

See, even I can be incorrect...it does happen.:)

Madison— Wisconsin jumped to #2 in the nation this month, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s coincident index.  Wisconsin’s growth rate over the last three months is the best in 25 years and the state’s ranking is the best in history.
"This is more great news, not only for the state, but for job-seekers and employers as well," Governor Walker said.  "A better economy means a better quality of life for all Wisconsinites, and that is why it is my top priority.  This latest history-making ranking is one more sign we are heading in the right direction."
The coincident index is a measure of economic conditions for all 50 states.  The coincident index is calculated by using four state variables.  These include employment, average hours worked in manufacturing, the unemployment rate, and wage and salary data.
This ranking is latest in series of positive economic news for state:
  • Private sector job growth from April to July shows the largest three-month gain onrecord going back to 1990 at 28,100.  Total job growth is the best as wellwith 31,900.
  • Wisconsin housing permits for the first seven months of 2013 are 20.5% above 2012.
  • New business formations year-to-date are up 4.2% from 2012 levels.
  • Average initial weekly unemployment insurance claims are at 13-year low.
Wisconsin’s unemployment rate is 6.7%, below the national average of 7.3%.

FYI, WI was 49th when Jim Doyle left office. That's quite a turnaround, but, purely coincidental, I'm sure.

Imagine what a common sense laden, fiscally conservative budget and leadership could accomplish if implemented in DC. I know, what a novel thought.

This seems to be exactly what McCain wants...play nice, wait for your turn, and then move ever so slightly to the right.

Reagan would turn over in his grave. How about we stand for the free market and small government. I don't want to be a Dem Lite.

I've had it with the constant talk of compromise. You can't compromise with the Constitution, with capitalism, and with the American Way. When you do, you have Obama...and that's why he's lost the way. His principles aren't mine (of course, to be fair, he doesn't really have any, he bounces around looking at polls and trying to be Marx while pretending he never heard of him), and my beliefs are still the same as they were twenty years ago; freedom, fiscal restraint, and tiny government good; regulation, tax and spend politics, and big government bad.

I don't bounce back and forth, because, I actually have seen what works, what doesn't, and quit fighting it. Government spending fails because of the immense waste that is involved, while letting people spend money on what they want...it's the purest form of supply and demand in all the land.

Pitcher X, 2011-13-----3.97 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9, 8.7 K/9, 5.81 IP/S

The only negative in Pitcher X is he's got about one less out per start, but to be honest, much of that may be from working some in relief and not being "stretched out"...hence, being limited to 4-5 innings at times.

Pitcher X is Marco Estrada. Funny how he's never mentioned in the same breath as Yo, even though he's been as effective when healthy.

Not only is it ridiculous, it shows just how ignorant one of the leaders of the Dems is. I could fall down on the budget and find a hundred things that can be eliminated or cut in half.

Remember when Pelosi was running the House, she basically kept the Air Force on standby to fly her home, costing the taxpayers millions. Multiply that by thousands, and one could easily make a huge dent. But, that isn't what they want. They want to make the rubes dependent on the government for every single thing in their lives, and continue making it bigger. It has nothing to do with the children, or the elderly, or those unable to take care of themselves. They were around when Ronald Reagan was president, and his entire budget was the same size as the "stimulus" (which, oh by the way, did not work, just like I told you it wouldn't). People weren't dying in the streets, and those who needed it were being taken care of.

Rewrite history as you wish, but it won't work. Most of us that lived through the economic prosperity of the 80's are still alive. We've seen low unemployment (don't forget, liberals now insist "full employment is around 5% unemployment...the same number they lambasted W about less than a decade ago) and job creation numbers that would make Obama pee his pants. It's possible again...but only with fiscal discipline and people being allowed to keep what they earn. When the administration's stated goal is to "spread the wealth," and 16% of the economy now solidly in government control, socialism is upon us.

Cowards, one and all. Vile, and disgusting excuses of human beings. They should be kissing the feet of the Benghazi kin. I'd like to think that some on the left have an ounce of patriotism, but the facts seem to show otherwise.

He loves debt because it's easier to spend tons of cash and punish the evil successful that way.

And yes, he's a hypocrite, and a liar. He will say anything and blame anyone as he tries to cement a legacy that ignores a record of ineptness and scandal after scandal.

He has no path, no leadership ability, and, appears to be completely ignorant on domestic and foreign policy. When you stand for nothing, heading in the proper direction...or even knowing what direction that is...is a mighty tough decision.

I forgot to mention earlier that Counsell said Khris Davis has made the braintrust reconsider their "alignment."

As I said last night, Doug did not say no when asked if Braun would be asked to switch positions. Normally, you would have expected an immediate "well, it's really hard changing positions" type answer.

None of us know what will happen in the offseason, but Aoki being dealt to a team in need of a leadoff hitter with Davis and/or Gindl, or some combo thereof taking over, makes so much sense, it's difficult to imagine another scenario taking place.

Considering Counsell was in the team meetings this past week, I take that with a bit more meaning than I would from Brian or Bill.

Per BA, Crew resigns Arcenio Leon to a minor league contract. He was claimed off waivers last year, taken off the 40, and spent a year in AA, where he struggled with control. Obviously, a hard thrower still trying to put it all together.

Probably inconsequential, but Axford, Henderson, and Kintzler all have the same backstory. You can't teach velocity.

This will amount to a huge increase on every electric bill in the USA.

It's a hidden tax, that accomplishes nothing. Our air is cleaner than it's been in decades. Why then, you ask? Because environmental wackos gave Obama millions in cash. It's a political thank you that will, once again, severely limit money to spend that may have boosted the five year slump that just happens to coincide with the tax and spend ways of the Obama administration.

Pathetic.

Lots of discussion on Billy Hamilton scoring from 2B on a infield hit, but the 3B simply knocked it too far away from the SS. Lots of above average runners would have scored on that.

The Cards look to have several guys who wouldn't be playing if they were out of contention. Several guys have barely been trotting to 1B, nowhere near full speed. Sometimes, you gotta wonder if those guys playing at 75% are any better than their backup who is pretty much full strength.

9/20/2013 08:19:00 PM

(9/20/2013 08:05:00 PM) - Al

Doug did not scoff or deny any talk of Braun possibly being asked to change positions (RF or 1B). That would seem to tell me that it is something that has been discussed. Obviously, RF is not much different, and Ryan has the arm strength for it, though his arm has never been consistent or accurate, by any means.

I have been watching hard for balls hit to the Brewers' RF that the runner would have taken an extra base on Davis' weak arm, and in the past month, there has not been a single hit that I have seen, though there has been a couple medium deep fly balls that the runner declined to challenge Aoki, that they may well have went on Davis, both were on 2B and would have been going for 3B.

9/20/2013 08:05:00 PM

(9/20/2013 07:46:00 PM) - Al

Hellweg's K/BB ratio was 17-5 going into tonight's game. Obviously, he's not going to have success walking that many guys...and I'm not sure why it is, as a ground ball pitcher, he should be throwing strikes, and letting the hitters bang them into the ground.

He looks to have horrible luck, though by my count, he has a .344 BAbip, which is high, but not nearly as high as you would think, as many dinky hits have made it through the infield.

9/20/2013 07:46:00 PM

(9/20/2013 07:18:00 PM) - Al

Not sure what Bianchi was looking at there. Scooter was ten feet closer to the bag than the runner, not sure what made him go to 1B. Maybe thought the runner had been running on the pitch or something.

With the highest pay-per-view boxing price - at an average of more than $70 - the fight will generate nearly $150 million in revenue in TV sales alone.

Nevada boxing regulators say the gate for the bout was just more than $20 million, also a record. A total of 16,146 seats were sold for the event at an average price of almost $1,240 per ticket.--AP

Al, love your stuff. How does Thornburg not do so well in the minors and do ok for the Crew. After LAST year I thought he was a fill-in at best, but is he for real?

I am an unabashed casual, I apologize, that is why I count on you to form my opinion.

Eric

I posted way back when that Thornburg's poor numbers were mostly a result of the offensive environment of the western cities of the PCL, as well as a far higher than normal HR rate.  He is pitching consistently, and while not unhittable, has certainly been very solid. He's also doing it while topping out at 92-94, so he's not anywhere near his max velocity. And, he's had the opposite HR luck in the bigs, only 1 in 59 IP...you caqn bet he's had a few fly balls caught on the warning track, or just hit to the deepest part of the park, as that's just not sustainable for a guy with his stuff (good, not great velocity, and a breaking ball that often ends up in the strike zone).

I think Tyler will end up as either a very good reliever or a bottom of the rotation starter...even through this streak of productive starts, he has never made it into the 7th (though he could have last night). He gets both lefties and righties out, and his lack of height has not been an issue yet, either with his stamina or a tendency to be "up" (many feel shorter pitchers lack a downhill plane, though, for whatever reason, it doesn't bother southpaws) with location.

Crew claims Josh Ravin from Reds. He does fit the mold, big RHP, that Doug has signed plenty of over the years.

He has had very little success, but must have a good arm, as he strikes out about a batter an inning...but has walked almost as many.

I think he may well have been claimed just to make a good impression; to help sign him to a minor league contract this offseason, as I can't imagine them using a 40 man spot on him all winter.

All it takes to change the Constitution is 75% of the states signing off on it. I have no qualms at all about doing so.

However, the mere fact they wish to legislate through the judicial branch...or, simply ignore the law and do whatever they want (also known as the Obama way, and if you disagree, you're a racist) tells me they have no desire to do things the proper way. Very funny, but very slapstick. Might be hard to keep up and it may be very hit and miss.

Justin Grimm lowers his ERA a tad by throwing to 1B for a meaningless out as the game ends on the squeeze. Of course, the correct play is to pick it up and fire it home, just in case the runner falls down or missed the plate.

To be honest, I'm not sure if I've ever saw that before.

Also, I'm not sure why no one seems to ever pitch out versus the Crew, as Ron does the squeeze, with one out and a singles hitter at the plate a good percentage of the time. It's a bit of a risk with the bases loaded, but, so is hoping for the best.

It's almost like the opposing manager is thinking, "He's not going to squeeze, because he knows I know he's going to squeeze, and he thinks I'll pitchout."

Meanwhile, he keeps calling it and no one pitches out. With defenses being more and more aggressive with shifts and playing in, this seems to go against that.

Last night, Sveum changed pitchers every other hitter, tonight, it's almost exactly like a normal game.

Very odd. Seems as if he was trying to prove some sort of point to Jackson, and all the rest was trying to cover it up.

Nothing bores me more than discussion of beards, good luck charms, or "gritty and scrappy" players.

The Red Sox are good because they are scoring far more runs than they allow. Ditto for every other good team. Granted, if you get along, you may create a better atmosphere in order to do that, but for the most part, silly discussion is just cliche and makes the media look like gullible buffoons.

Sveum was making some strange decisions this entire month, pulling guys very early. Maybe Theo told him to be aggressive in his hooks to make sure they get a look at young pitchers, but no vet wants to pitch and get taken out of a 2-0 game in the 4th. Very odd.

Always embarrassing when you have an incident in your dugout in front of the cameras too. Last one in MIL I recall was Prince/Parra, of which we all know Manny, at best, was a headcase.

Clint sends in this storyline of the last few seconds of the Badgers' football game.

The view of the knee is not close enough to see if it was down, but the rest seems legit.

Jason also sends in this rulebook quote, not that I did not believe him, but I don't know why you don't just have the player, you know, kneel down if he wishes to give himself up. Simulating a kneel down could mean a dozen things, and leaves a lot up in the air (including, possibly, a knee).

9/15/2013 10:38:00 PM

(9/15/2013 08:25:00 PM) - Al

Getting some pushback about the Badgers' "fumble/kneel down."

I see the NFL guy on Fox said the QB kneeled down. Friend of Ramblings Jason said the player only has to "simulate a kneel down," which is absurd, but may well be true.

The players don't get it...it's supposed to be a crapshoot. That's the whole idea. It's supposed to weaken the wildcard winner and give an advantage to the team with the best record.

If you want a nice long series, win the division. The fact it is a crapshoot is why teams play so hard to win the division.

I didn't think that was a bad pitch, but the tracker shows it almost right in the exact middle of the plate. Halton's probably a .350 hitter in that spot.

9/15/2013 04:33:00 PM

(9/15/2013 04:26:00 PM) - Al

Be great if Halton could find a winter ball team willing to play him at 3B, he'd be a nice asset there.

That's his ceiling we saw today, a RH bat with pop, but that's a talent 25 teams are looking for, especially since he can play 1B/LF/RF.

RRR recommending winter ball for Juan Francisco. Couple of specific changes proposed.--MLB.com

I have to question his desire or ability to change, he's a streaky hitter who chases too many pitches out of the zone. He also can't hit LHP at all. What he does have, however, is 30 HR power, and despite his inability to be average at 1B, has solid defensive numbers at 3B, one of the weakest positions in the sport. He'll find a job somewhere, and probably put up an 800ish OPS, as he just keeps doing.

Darnell Coles has joined the coaching staff for the rest of the month. Prediction: Future MLB manager.--Adam, MLB.com

Coles is a very nice guy and former big league role player. I've thought for a long time Mike Guerrero would be added to the big league staff, as he is a young guy who speaks Spanish, and is at AAA. Coles is about the same age and is at AA. I would guess the Crew will either have to find them a job on the staff or they will soon find them elsewhere.

Let's be blunt, most coaches are just friends of the manager, and few changes take place. They don't make much money, as the money they get from a playoff share and/or from MLB licensing is usually more than their salary.

Wait! Did you just arrive on this planet? Nobody made fun of the WH before 2009? Really?!--Ray Stewart

Obama's inability to handle any criticism has nothing to do with the color of his skin, though it is directly related to his incredibly thin skin. As I predicted four years ago, the constant crying wolf, and pretending all criticism was racism, has backfired painfully. No one believes it, and he's now just considered a whiner.

Obama has only seen a fraction of the criticism that W did. The difference is in the response. W ignored it, went on about his business, and stayed on task. Obama is all over the place (how many times has he said the main focus is now "back to the economy?" He has ignored the Constitution, made his own rules, and the scandals, every single one remains uninvestigated and unsolved, proves that.

9/15/2013 11:13:00 AM

(9/15/2013 11:10:00 AM) - Al

Let's play math on a Sunday morning.

The Brewers have a 3.96 ERA for the season, 11th in the NL.

Since June 1st, their ERA is 3.62, which would be 6th for the season...behind the five teams who will likely make the playoffs.

If they could would have been able to put up the 3.62 ERA all season, that's 49.98 fewer runs they would have allowed. I'm going to round to 50.

I'm going to take away those 50 runs from the 643 they've given up. 593. I'll ignore the fact they probably would have allowed fewer unearned runs as well.

The Crew has scored 577 runs this season.

577 vs. 593. In theory, a team that scored that many and allowed that many would have a winning percentage of .486...79 wins, over 162. Right now, they'd have 71. In reality, the Crew has 64.

I'm the first to admit, this is a bit of a pointless exercise. However, this is not a 60some win team coming back. Since June 1st, they are, in the real world, 44-50. They've scored 357 and given up 379, which, in fact, should lead to...44 wins (see, this stuff works out once in a while). That's a 76 win pace.

What does this all mean? Well, nothing, except it does seem to tell us the Crew is a better team the final three months than all of 2013, small sample size be damned. Also, considering they are losing two free agents (Hart, Gonzalez) this winter, almost all of that talent is returning.

I'm not the only one who thinks this way. I promise you Doug and Gord (and Mark) are thinking this is a .500ish team with a healthy Braun (never mind Ramirez and 1B not losing your top three options from day one. Hence, it's a lot easier to take a 81 win team and make it a 88 win team (a likely playoff team with two wildcards) than a whatever they actually end up with (about 70).

BUMPED, info on Al Gore's buffonery below. Suckers.

Remember how they insisted there was no ice a while back?

Lies. It's what they do. When you profit on scaring rubes, you will probably find a way to scare rubes.

EDIT: Gore off a million miles in his lie. He never thought anyone would check.

He said whatever he could to make money. It was not based on facts. It was based on saying complete crap that could not be proven or was very hard to prove. Then, every time the wind blows, or it rains, or snows, he called up the old media and said, "See?"

And they ate it up.

How you feeling now?

No one ever went broke overestimating the intelligence of the American public.

Remember the Dennis Miller quote, "You know, when I was growing up, it was hot. It was really hot. It didn't just become hot a few years ago."

The irony is, all these guys are just charlatans. The end of the world as we know it is always...just a few years away. I have a couple survivalist sites bookmarked (they are labeled "panic now"), and five years ago, the end was in the 2012-16 range. Now? 2016-2020. Ditto for Gore. The immense heat up (or cool down) is always going to be just a few years away. And the rubes keep falling for it.

They remind me of the tonic salesman that shows up on every sitcom or drama series set in the past. They stroll into town, selling pure alcohol, and within a couple days (about 15 minutes of air time), every housewife and teetotaler in town is drunk, and shocked (SHOCKED!)  to find out that stuff that looks like booze, tastes like booze, and comes in a glass bottle just like booze...is booze.

All that time and money they've wasted on this scam, they could have been spending on lowering spending, lowering taxes, and not pushing off the inevitable to my son's generation.

They should be ashamed of themselves, and tried for treason. Even if they have to hauled back from another freaking vacation, or lying about drinking more water to stay healthy. They are pathetic human beings, and complete failures.

Hard to believe the Crew is last, as Aoki, Lucroy, Weeks, and Francisco often work the count deep, though they have a lot of aggressive hitters to be sure.

I also am surprised the difference between first and last is only 22 pitches a game. That's barely worth mentioning, 2.5-3 pitches an inning.

Hellweg, battling himself all day, gets through 5 innings having allowed 4 runs. Not a banner outing, but a sign that he can eat innings even without his best stuff.

You can count on one hand how many pitchers have had success after compiling a 1-1 BB/K ratio in AAA, but I feel he'll have a nice run in the bigs, be it in the bullpen or towards the bottom of a rotation. I would expect him to be in AAA to begin the season, barring injury, but he'll be up before the end of '14 for good. As of today, he's in the 6th-8th SP range somewhere.

This is us if Obamacare is allowed to survive. Simply put, when there's no incentive to, the quality suffers.

There's also no proof that leaving kids hungry at lunch by feeding them veggies they won't eat isn't possibly the most ignorant idea on the planet.

I yearn for the days of Nancy Reagan, the Bush ladies, and pretty much, any first lady who wasn't as embarrassing as the current administration.

Oh, and by the way, stop spending my money on lavish vacations and flying around lying to people.

Stay home and shut the hell up.

On the sidebar of a site...I admit, this is in poor taste, but hilarious.

As I guessed, Atlanta is the 3rd MLS expansion city "already in."

Did she think of this when she was on vacation (the irony being, of course, we all know her and Bill barely speak, never mind go to Australia together), or when she was deathly ill?

Those two deserve each other.

With all the talk about Thornburg's awful numbers in AAA, I just thought I'd remind you that, as you read here in early June, Tyler did not pitch badly when he was not in the hitter friendly conditions of the western PCL.

You gotta look a little deeper than the raw stats of the minors at times. I'm not saying Colorado Springs, Reno, Tucson, Vegas, Albuquerque, Sacramento are a pitcher's nightmare, but I'm 44, and I'm pretty sure I could hit .300 at any of 'em.

High altitude + big gaps = Tyler having a 7 ERA.

Crew claims hard thrower I wrote about here. He's not a big guy like Doug usually goes after, but he is a big strikeout, high velocity, fastball/slider type that they do like to stockpile. Going to Helena for now (only team still playing), but since he's 28, I think there's a good chance they will want the braintrust to see him in MIL before the end of the month.

EDIT: Friend of Rambling Jim says de la Torre will have a pair of options left, if indeed he is still on the 40 next spring.

So the first lady is wasting millions of tax dollars to run around the country, hang out with celebrities, push false science and mommy us to death?--Redsteeze

Yes.

All they know is spend and tax. They have no respect for the taxpayer's money, and it shows.

Handicapped parking spots need a sign to be valid. If it just has a wheelchair painted on the ground, it's fair game.--OrganizeYourLife

Around here, I knew that was true...because for several months a year, you can't see it anyway.

FYI, another one is the "senior citizen parking"...those are not valid, they're just put up by the retailer. Of course, with my gray hair and stiff gait when I get out of my car, no one questions me.

Whatever strikes me as interesting, and serious Milwaukee Brewers thoughts. If you are a believer in respecting OBP, throwing strikes, and keeping the ball in the park, you may have found the place you've been searching for. I believe in low taxes, small government, and am not afraid to be labeled patriotic. I'm happy to pay taxes to help the helpless. I don't like paying taxes to help the clueless. Look at the Occupy movement...I'm forced to pay taxes to help those whose plight I delight in.--Dennis Miller

Never have lives less lived been more chronicled.--Dennis Miller

I’m going to plead with you, do not cross us. Because if you do, the survivors will write about what we do here for 10,000 years.--Mad Dog Mattis

I have never understood why it is "greed" to want to keep the money you have earned but not greed to want to take somebody else's money.--Thomas Sowell
