The truth? The folk song singers lose interest in "causes" very quickly. Occupy lasted as long as it was a drug using, pee on the ground, easy sex camp out. As soon as it got a bit chilly, they went home to their parents and hooked up the PS3 and Netflix again.
Simply put, there is one way to quell pure evil, kill it. As long as there is profit in kidnapping, the sex trade, slavery, and so on; the only way to stop it is to make the consequences of getting caught so painful no one wants to do it. Trust me, the fellas stealing young women aren't the least bit bothered by social media.
The minute the world decided not to go after them, it basically sanctioned the behavior. While that's a shame, it's the way it is.
"We should do something about that." Sadly, "something" in this case means do nothing and hope for the best.
I'm not sure how they can live with themselves. I guess, sometimes, being oblivious to the pain and suffering of others is just the modern way of being selfish.

Hard not to feel bad for Larry Drew, who certainly did not have much of a chance to shine last season, and his team actually played far better in the second half, as beat up and injured as it was.
That said, Kidd reminds me a lot of Scott Skiles, who looks better every day, as his teams always defended and seemed to overachieve a few games. Kidd was a brilliant playmaker who had an incredible career despite having a well below average jump shot. He seems like a very good choice to be a guy who can hide weaknesses and get the most out of players.
Plus, nice to see the new owners taking charge and not even blinking at $5M they still owe Drew.

Jason Kidd named head coach of the Bucks, Nets get a 2nd rounder in 2015 and one later.
The trend seems to be very young coaches in the NBA, they now have 3-4 that just retired a year or two ago. Of course, Kidd is the only one who has had any success...yet.
Amazing how so many reports Saturday night were incorrect, as many had him being named team president and uninterested in coaching. That said, it seems very likely he will have far more say about the roster than most coaches.

That only means a team would have to give up more in terms of prospects and the total package to get Price, which Melvin said would not be easy to do.
"We're not going to deal the young impact player to help our big club now," said Melvin. "It's going to be tough to do that. I think we do have a lot of players in our system that will play in the big leagues."
In terms of regular positions in the field, Melvin doesn't plan to do much shopping, mainly because he doesn't consider it an area of concern.
"You have to ask, where are you going to play a guy?" said Melvin. "We have a pretty good lineup. I'm not going to trade for a catcher or a second baseman or shortstop or left fielder or center fielder or right fielder."--JS

Stunning piece from New York Post on Bucks' interest in Jason Kidd as coach and some sort of exec role.

This could have legs, especially if Kidd is thinking long term. He may look at the Bucks as I would...an opportunity to start over with little expectations. Smith and KRod may both be given the day off tomorrow. What a couple of studs. He doesn't get the late inning pressure spots, but Duke has been equally outstanding, and his numbers versus RH's are just as good. Never forget how many casuals said when he was signed if Zach pitched an inning in the majors, the season was a lost cause. Many very mediocre SP's adjust nicely to the bullpen.
Waiting to see if any moves are announced, but while phone calls may be made and a player or two hops on a flight, they might not know whose roster spot they'll be taking until tomorrow after tests are performed and the like.

What's so sad is not only are the umpires wrong so often when they review, they have no idea how to run a game. They lollygag around, the challenge comes too late, and they aren't giving any effort at all (this is why the calls are wrong so often also), and they just ignore the rules put in place to keep the game flowing.

Logan Schafer is an excellent defender, is not hitting at all in AAA. Gindl is, but would be well below average in CF, and to be blunt, would look awful playing the spot Gomez plays every day.

Switch hitting catcher Shawn Zarraga, longstanding organizational soldier who has always gotten on base nicely, is one step away, now at AAA.
The former 44th round pick is now a probable call up in September to be the 3rd C, and considering how badly most backstops are at hitting, has produced his way into prospect status. Note he's thrown out over 40% of opposing base stealers this year.
.480/.494 and 32 walks compared to 12 K's are both pretty much video game numbers, and are likely impossible to keep up. That said, catchers don't have to hit much to be a backup.

I would agree it is unlikely the Brewers will go for, or have the prospects to get after the two big guns on the SP market, Price or Smaradija. Who do you think they might go after? They'd have to be better than Nelson, which in itself may be tough other than the top two, and without a long term commitment.
My guess a week or two ago was a guy like AJ Burnett, though the Phillies are somewhat back in the race, AJ might be an August deal. My other thought is a guy like Capuano, who has started and pitched in relief, and could be used as a spot starter. Now that Chris is out there for the taking, another might be Felipe Paulino (if healthy), or Paul Maholm (though LA is a contender and money is meaningless to them).
That said, Doug keeps mentioning relievers, and do not forget, Wooten, Thorburg, and Henderson all have options (and two are currently DL'd anyway) and can be AAA depth. TEX has Soria and Frasor, SD has Street and Benoit, TB has a couple, the White Sox have former closers Lindstrom and Guerra. Many can be replaced with cheaper guys from the minors and most fans will never notice if they bring up a kid who puts up a 4 ERA instead of the above, who might have a 2.50....that's six runs over half a season...to the Brewers, that 1-2 wins might be vital, to the teams due to win 70 games...not so much.

Very little talk of the Bucks saying Parker is a 4, who can play some 3.
With Giannis, who is probably a 3 who can play some 4 also on the roster, that's why Ersan and Henson are on the trade block.
I'd just like to say I think Henson is very overrated among Bucks' fans...he basically has one positive, that little 8 foot jump hook. He's too thin to rebound, and too thin to play defense, though he does block a few shots.

Not to mention they currently have Fiers and Nelson at AAA, two of the best arms at that level, though many ignore Mike because he's too old.

I think it was Axford who said once it really wasn't a blown save if you leave the game tied, because that's a huge difference than behind behind or losing. I always laugh that no matter how long the actual weekend is, people extend it by a day or two. For example, if it's a three day weekend, people take an extra day and make it a four day weekend. Four days becomes five.
We usually have a meeting on Thursday mornings. It's not mandatory, but most of us local folks go every week. At the end, they announced there would be no meeting next week, due to the 4th of July being Friday. Turns out, not only am I the only one working Thursday, I am the only one working Wednesday. Everyone else is working Monday and Tuesday only.
I couldn't help but think of my old company, in which they proudly told us we were all our own boss and could make our own schedule...and then complained when we took off...Good Friday. Even worse, one year, New Year's Day was on a Thursday, and they were shocked no one wanted to work on Friday the 2nd.

Ramblings' neighbor couple were watching their grandkids last night, while digging up some weeds or lawn at the end of their driveway. At least a half dozen times, I saw one of them race after one of the kids in the street, or in the garage, or somewhere.
I'm not sure if this is a lesson not to watch the grandkids, not to work outside, or what.
To be on the safe side, I'm swearing off both of them.

I often write about the Rambling dog, and whenever I do, I often hear from people who lost a dog, or tell me how much they like reading about him. Often, people tell me they saw what the post was about, and they were afraid something had finally happened to him.
Ronnie is 18, and we've had him 14 years. He's had good days and bad days over the years, and several times, we've thought he was on a gentle slope downhill that he would never overcome. For the past year plus, he gets up 1-3 times every night, wakes me, and goes outside. I think at this point it's just habit, but I don't have the strength to retrain him. He takes a pain pill every night, which is why we think he began getting up, panting loudly. The panting stopped the first night he took the pain reliever, but he still gets up.
Of late, his back legs seem to be giving him trouble...he kind of "hops" down the deck steps instead of walking, and he struggles on the hardwood floor...his back legs just won't support him, and he can't get a grip. I carry him into the bedroom, which is carpeted, and he regains his foothold, and he's fine, for the most part. I think the medicine keeps him from feeling much pain, but he sure looks awkward. Often, he looks up at us and looks embarrassed, as he waits for us to help him. Of course, we look at each other and wonder what's best...he doesn't act like he's hurting, much at least, but we don't really know either.
I often recall what our vet said last year, that "you will know" when the time comes. One day, I'm afraid, we're just going to wake up and the final step will be obvious; and we're going to have no doubt.

There's a couple ways to look at this, as $1.5M is not much compared to player payroll, which is in the $60M range, more in many cases. The coaching staff as a whole probably makes about $5M, not even 10% of the total of the players.

Emailer says his SUV's tires cost $275 a piece. No tire place he's gone to has more than one tire to choose from, it's such strange size. He found some online for $219, but it cost $50 for delivery...each.
Our first Vue was like that, over $200 each, and no tire place even stocked it, had to drive out to Saturn to buy it and then just charged us for the installation and what Saturn charged them. The Rambling wife had visited me at the store, went to Wal Mart, and came out to a flat. I told her to go buy a Fix A Flat and drive across the street to Tires Plus, because Wal Mart said they did not stock that size. TP said it was far too big to patch, and then found out that size was the holy grail to replace.

Tune up and tires on car, about $650. I like the fact that spark plugs and wires cost $60, while a part he can't honestly tell me what it actually does runs $250.
Remember the days when you could buy tires for $30 each? Heh. You know, we don't need that silly pipeline from Canada to boost North American oil production.
If you are a mechanical whiz, shoot me an email or tweet, I'll give you the list of the stuff that "could" be replaced and you can tell me if you'd fix it and when. My O2 sensor and some other valve (EKG? EPG?) have been bad for 70K miles, so I'm not bothering with them unless someone can convince me it's worthwhile. Many say Bucks promised to take Michigan big man Mitch McGary with ther first pick in the 2nd round if available, as he shut down workouts after the Bucks. He has said he would prefer a 2nd round selection, because then he could negotiate his own deal, rather than the 1st round "slot," which is guaranteed, but also for 3-4 seasons.
McGary may be hoping to sign a 1-2 season contract and hit free agency at 22, much like Wesley Matthews Jr. did, hitting the jackpot with a $35M deal after a surprising rookie campaign.
Bucks also like Giannis' brother with one of their three 2nd rounders...he might be stashed in Europe or the NBDL for a season or two.

Crew removes Irving Falu from 40 man to try and slip him through waivers to open up a spot, fails when Padres claim him.
Good luck to Irving, he is probably correctly placed at AAA, but he could probably be a plenty passable utility player if just given the chance. Now, explain to me why he was claimed and Pete Kozma was not...versatility I guess, but Kozma could easily be a starting SS for several years.
Brewers will likely be making a few moves, clearing a couple spots as they look to add a player or two via waivers or trade. I pegged Falu as player #40 a while back, and they do have a few players injured (Hellweg and Burgos), who could be outrighted or moved to the 60 day DL, which would cost only money, as they would then get the major league minimum and earn the player major league service time, as opposed to the standard AAA salary for 40 man members.

The one thing I did appreciate about the Nats TV guys on MLB Network yesterday was they openly discussed "punting"...though they did not call it that. When they let the pitcher bat in the 7th, they admitted the Nats would have a slightly better chance of winning if they pinch hit. That said, they figured Williams felt the innings that fresh arm they brought up before the game were more important than a better chance of scoring runs.
Granted, down 7, even a home run probably only increased their chance of winning from less than 1% to 5%. The math simply said to get the game over with. If they had scored a few and made it 9-6 or 9-7, then they're looking at a realistic chance of getting back to even. Down that many, nope.

Figaro pitched two innings yesterday afternoon in Utah as well. Yeoman's work. I'm not sure if Kintzler could have gone back out anyway, as guys with arm issues often struggle to pitch, rest, and then pitch again.
They could send him back down and bring up Nelson or Pena, who would both be available tomorrow night (or Blazek, who is also on the 40, but who has pitched rather badly), but that seems unlikely.

I always find it funny how teams preach defense...as long as that good defensive player can hit.
Kozma will have several teams interested in his just for his D and ability to play 2B/SS. He rates 10 runs above average at SS, and likely would be even higher at 2B, as the throw is far shorter. You could even see him fitting in on the Crew, as Herrera, who I love as a utility guy, would be hard pressed to play SS every day even for a week or two if Segura went down, and Elian is better suited as a 4th/5th OF anyway, on a team with the normal amount of bench guys.

The divorce rate is nowhere near 50%, as that's just dumb math. There are about half as many divorces each year as marriages, but if you think that is 50%, you must work in government.
It's somewhere in that 20-33% range, and if you've been divorced already, it's higher.

Caleb Gindl with a 850 OPS versus RHP, Schafer at 788 in his small sample at AAA. Neither have hit LHP, but Gindl has faced a ton of them.

As the TV guys discuss the 13 man staff, don't forget, Estrada could be replaced by Nelson in the rotation at any time...Marco would have to go to the bullpen, as he cannot go down (I don't think). He could easily replace Fiers and Wang out there.

Brewers, Padres, and Brewers all have four more wins than they "should" have, based on runs scored and allowed. In MIL's case, using Wang in blowouts and losing by more runs than otherwise contributes a bit.
Note that the A's, who have the best record in the game...have seven fewer wins than you'd expect, through less than half the season. The Orioles were incredible lucky in '12, winning 10-12 more than they "should have." The A's are on pace to win 95 games and be 15 below expected. Imagine that.

Herrera 3-11 with a RBI, R, SB, and SF in his starts. They won all three games he started.
I don't think most casuals appreciate his versatility. He's not a defensive whiz anywhere, but he makes the routine plays in both the infield or outfield. Since he can play anywhere, you can just build your bench based on other factors, and he can fill in anywhere in that last spot.

If Hamilton can put up a 800 OPS, he's probably a top 25 player, as his speed makes him incredible valuable for picking up bases and runs, and on defense. He's a guy who can score from 2B on an infield single, if the ball rolls away from the fielder, or if the throw is in the dirt.

I pride myself on being a contrarian, and as often is the case, everyone seems to be missing the most important thing...on that first attempt to hit Braun, the ball went behind him, and it was pure luck that the catcher caught it. That would have tied the game, and makes me wonder if ARI is even trying to win the game...they seem far more caught up in the sideshow aspect of it.
That borders on game fixing to me. MLB does not take that lying down, ask Pete Rose.

Grady Sizemore's days as a Red Sox might be short.--Cafardo
EDIT: Sizemore DFA'd by Red Sox. Making $750K this year.
I was just thinking the other day that Sizemore would be a nice pickup for the Crew.
Only a .288/.324 line this year, but 25% of his PA's have been versus LHP. Also a very low .266 BAbip, which shows bad luck more than a loss of skill. And even though he has struggled, he's still walked 10% of the time, something MIL could use. Has played all three OF spots too.

Brad Mills has an opt-out provision in his minor league deal that was triggered on Sunday, but can only be exercised if he has an offer from a team that would put him on its 25-man roster.
Mills, 29, has impressed at Triple-A, with a 1.56 ERA and 9.2 K/9 against 2.2 BB/9 through 75 innings (including 12 starts).--JS, via MLBTR
Most years, Mills would have been up a month ago. The SP's have been healthy, and while a few relievers have been dinged up, they have replaced each other for the most part.

I would rather have Hill or Prado...Prado can play multiple positions and I would rather have Hill over Gennett and Weeks at 2B.--message board poster

Hill has a 699 OPS this season, and is signed through 2016...$11M now, $12M later.
Those numbers include their home games, which are played in Arizona, the 2nd best offensive park in the NL.
Scooter and Rickie have a 773 OPS, good for 3rd best 2B production in the NL.

Logan Schafer and Irving Falu optioned to Triple-A. Gorzelanny coming off DL and Elian Herrera coming back up.
I was partially right, and Herrera is a far more versatile OF, as Falu has not played LF or CF much. Nice of them to give Irving a start before shipping him down, though he is known as a far better defensive 2B/SS.
If Elian can do the job backing up SS and CF, it may also "create" a spot for Gindl, who would be a nice power bat off the bench. I think Logan will go down and have a .400 OBP, as long as Nashville doesn't run into a bunch of lefties.

Gorzelanny will be activated tomorrow.
The most obvious choice to go down would be Fiers, but another would be Logan Schafer, who rarely plays, and if nothing else, could use some PA's. The negative would, of course, be that Falu would be the only reserve for Segura and all three OF's. Jim Henderson, on the 15-day disabled list with right-shoulder inflammation since May 2, traveled with the Brewers on their current eight-game, nine-day road trip in order to continue his rehabilitation program.
Earlier in the week he made 35 throws from 90 feet and said he was hoping to begin throwing from the mound again by June 18.
"A lot better than the first time we tried to come back," said Henderson, who had to be returned from a minor-league rehab stint last month. "I'm still optimistic about the second stint here."
The Canadian native has his eyes on being back by July 1, when the Brewers play a two-game interleague series in Toronto, but a return early in the second half is probably more likely.
"I don't think it's a realistic goal, but I'd really like to make that Toronto trip and be active for that," he said. "But I think best-case I'd be doing rehab stints during that time. So we're looking at probably middle of July then if that's what they're telling me. The important thing is, as long as I'm throwing the ball well and I can help out in the second half, that would be great.
"If I can get back to where I was, that would be perfect."--JS

Sickels reviews the NL Central drafts, says the Brewers could be great or awful.
That's why he gets the big bucks.:)

Rival GM says Ben Zobrist will draw trade interest from more teams than David Price due to difference in $$$. Versatility appealing, esp in NL…
Brewers' player told me Zobrist could fit MIL, too, playing all over.--Rosenthal
I have trouble seeing the Crew trading for a guy making $7M that wouldn't have a spot to play everyday...but maybe he would play 1B if everyone was healthy, resting, and productive.
EDIT: As I've said before, Emilio Bonafacio makes more sense, as he's cheaper and has more experience at 3B, in case Ramirez gets hurt again.
We're starting to hear rumors about relief pitchers on the block as well...Houston Street, a name that has jumped out at me, is one of them.

Catholic church attendance far lower than in the 50's...despite the fact the population has doubled.
I discuss this once a month or so, and whenever I do, I get flooded with email telling me I'm incorrect, and that math is biased. Church attendance is down all over, and as I have pointed out, if you were living fifty years ago, hopped in a time machine, and landed today, while the world is far different, the church service is all but identical. They are too long, too slow paced, too wordy, too negative, and too many songs and, my goodness, far too many verses in those songs. And, as the Rambling brother will remind me if I leave it out, the average age of people attending is old. Not old like myself, but old as in, I would often be referred to a Junior, or that young whippersnapper.
The funny thing is, the only people I have ever heard argue church services are too short are, wait for it, ministers. They insist many of their members complain that sermons, and church itself, are not long enough.
Selective hearing has never been more obvious.

Lucroy getting national press.
Note Rosenthal calls Braun the LF. The old media is just awful.

Global warming "facts."
Repeat after me...climate changes. It always has, and it always will. We've had several ice ages, and a mini ice age that may not have ended until the mid 1800's (google it).
If you want me to worry about it being half a degree
I may have the attention span of a moth, but I know junk science when I see it.
