Brewers replace Seid

I can't say I know a thing about him, but the fact he interviewed for a GM position a few months ago is a good sign, though he is probably unlikely to stay in this position for a long time.

A couple thoughts after renting Draft Day and Neighbors from Redbox last night, using a buy one, get one free bonus code, of which they email me 4-5 of these a week.

1. Disappointed in Draft Day. Unrealistic, overlong, cliche ridden. Completely unnecessary subplot. By far the star of the movie was Jennifer Garner's short dress.

2. The worst part about Neighbors? I'm not sure who was more unlikable...the idiot yuppie couple or the frat kids. I was hoping they would both lose in the end. Had funny bits, like a 90 minute SNL skit...punch lines with lots of swings and misses.

3. Tough to not notice that the cost to rent the two films was $1.27, including tax. It wasn't that long ago, in the early 90's, when I lived in Eau Claire, it cost about $3 for a new release, and maybe $1.50 for another. One night a week, they would do some sort of special, like 79 or 99 cents for anything not on the new release wall.

4.By far the toughest part of the entire experience was returning the movies...the Rambling son always does this, so I did not know you had to hit "return" on the screen before pushing the DVD into the slot.

Be interesting to see if the team that signs Weeks does so to be a 2B or as a 1B/2B/OF/DH. I cannot imagine there being a lot of 2B jobs open, even of the platoon variety. He might be a very good "out of the box" bench bat, especially for a team that has a few LH hitters as everyday players.

The FSW girls just continue to be used by corporate America.

Nothing I enjoy more than mock outrage from those that hate free market capitalism.

EDIT: An emailer chimes in that it is thinking like that that allows men to force women to wear burkas and other such attire in goofball terrorist countries.

I never looked at it that way, but it makes sense.

(10/31/2014 04:17:00 PM) - Al

This list lost me when I saw Zach Duke higher than Pat Neshek.

Love to see the Crew pick up Lind/Pena platoon to play 1B, with the other being a power masher off the bench each day. If most pitchers were LH, Wily Mo would be in the Hall of Fame.

EDIT: Unless the Crew keeps Parra to play RF and moves Braun to 1B (and I seriously doubt it, though I was the first to mention it), they won't go after Pena, as he has never played 1B in the bigs.

EDIT: I'd love to see Gorzelanny return, as he can start or relieve, and though he probably can't go multiple days in a row, he can give you 2-3 innings.

The Crew exercises their half of Aramis' option, will wait for his decision.

With the buyout condsidered, they really agreed to a one year, $10M deal, which makes mathematical sense.

I think it would be best for both sides if he ends up elsewhere, as he could DH 1-2 days a week. He could have a very good season, but that seems unlikely playing 150 games at 3B.

We worry about the Rambling dog as the weather gets colder, as we assume it makes his joints and the like hurt more.

Last night, as I let him out at 3:24 (has slept through the night once in the last 18 months, thanks for asking), he saw the inch or so of snow on the deck, and held his paw in the air as if to wonder if he had developed the ability to float. He looked up at me disgustedly, as if to say, "You let this happen."

Because of this, it did my heart good to see him rolling in the snow where the lawn used to be, just like he often enjoys doing in the green grass during summertime. He was a shivering, scruffy pile of snow and wet when he wandered up a few minutes later, and required a toweling off before settling down into phase two of slumber, which includes whistling, drooling, and wheezing (him, not me).

I did not see this, but I do agree. With two outs, that runner should almost always be sent home, because the relay man often makes an awful, not even close throw.

After watching my DVR'd Criminal Minds, I remembered the game was on, so I switched it over to check the score. They were still talking about the previous triple, but Perez was batting.

The quietest success story in sports.

Meanwhile, this is what happens when you have a city that does not step up to get a place to play built. Milwaukee should take note, as Bud Selig and Tommy Thompson are not walking through that door to save your sorry selves.

Beckham should look to Sacramento, Minneapolis, or San Antonio. All are ready to go and arguably better places anyway.

I'm sure many folks are scoffing at Rodgers' being injured as he probably has a mild hamstring strain. They do not understand how hard it is to do stuff while in pain...the body subconsciously does what it can to avoid the pain...Ryan Braun's example of touching a hot stove is a good matter how hard you try, you can't keep your hand there.

In Rodgers' case, he's been playing on one leg...mighty tough to move in the pocket and make accurate passes that way. He's been throwing the ball, for the most part, without taking a stride.

Since he has not been keeping it warm, even by sitting on a hot water bottle, I would guess he probably came into the game with it "tweaked."

No one wants to hear it, but the best thing here is probably to lose the ball on downs and get him out of the game, rest over the bye week, get treatment, and return at 95% in a couple weeks. If he pushes it and pulls it more or tears it, it could be 4-6 weeks.

Spent most of Friday and Saturday driving across our fine state, Eau Claire to Green Bay to Platteville and home to the Eau Claire area. My wife's mom does not drive, and she always spends a month or so with her sister, we'll take her home after Thanksgiving.

Not only was it a beautiful ride, reminding us of God's glory and goodness, as we saw both nature and bountiful harvests. The thing I wanted to tell you about was we saw far more Walker signs, I would say 4-1. Many homemade ones in rural areas too, and not a single handwritten Burke one. It's difficult to believe this race is so tight. The car was full of one issue voters, as we are pro life and proudly so. We tend to side with the GOP on other issues as well, but we were happy to see so much support for our governor who wants to protect the most helpless, the unborn.

I've done this before, and been chided by some for playing with the numbers, but it's 100% true.

Walker won the recall by 400K votes, or a 60-40 margin...if you remove Dane and Milwaukee counties from the total. How incredible is that? Reagan got 59% of the votes in 1984, one of the most lopsided blowouts we'll ever witness.

My point? Scott's trek took him through nearly the entire state, but avoided the liberal bastions. I tell people all the time, I talk to people every week, and I'm lucky if I meet a single Obama supporter all year...but I sure meet a ton of folks who despise him. Those that may have voted for him keep quiet about it.

Needless to say, I rarely see clients in Dane or Milwaukee. That's why the support seems overwhelming, but because of the population of those two counties, it's pretty close to a toss up.

Look, we know exactly what a Burke win will bring...we lived through eight years of Doyle. Property taxes went up annually, special interests got anything they wanted, and funneled cash back to the Dems. Walker has created more jobs in four years than Doyle did in eight. That said, the urban areas of southern WI still believe you can tax your way to prosperity, and feel by punishing the successful, you can create a utopia. They did manage to create a three billion dollar deficit, which has been replaced by a half billion dollar surplus. Reagan showed us that fiscal responsibility works, it's just basic economic principles.

It's working perfectly. That's why the ads focus on cliches and lies, full of outdated numbers. Facts simply are too painful to bring up. So, they don't. Many of us see this as a "crawl on broken glass" election...but most do not. Never forget, McCain got more votes in 2008 than Obama got in 2012. Our side just didn't show up. The disgust has turned to apathy. That is why this is a 50/50 proposition right now.

Just shy of 58K fans in SEA for their home finale of the MLS season. I still say the MLS is the quietest success story in sports, and I still find it very ironic that their biggest problem is most of the soccer specific stadiums built in the past few years are simply too small, at around 18-20K.

Since my cookies saved my survivor picks each week, I had to search for "survivor" on Blogger and do the list again to see who I could use. Who would have imagined that sentence being typed twenty years ago?

I gotta take the Cowboys, even though I hate to, as they are playing a division foe/rivalry team, and coming off a huge upset win.

Survivor says only 13% are still alive.*

*The Bengals tied when I picked them, so depending on the rules, I could be out too. Some leagues say your team must win, some say your team cannot lose. Since this is just for fun, I've kept picking.

Last evening, my laptop simply died. I was typing, and all of a sudden, it went to a blue screen, a page of 'puter speak, and then darkness. I tried CPR (turned it off, then back on), same black screen.

The Rambling wife was at Target, so when she got home, she tried to run it in safe mode, and nothing.

I only hope when it is the Rambling dog's time, he can go as painlessly. Heck, me too.

Of course, before the obituary was even written, both the Rambling wife and son (online, as he's hours away) were angling to get the soon to be acquired, though as of yet unpurchased laptop, as though I do use mine for work, even the most basic, simple model is all I need, or desire. So, because she's older and makes more money, the Rambling wife passed off hers to me and shopped online for an hour on her tablet, finally deciding on one from Best Buy, hoping it goes on sale Sunday.

The Rambling son had Thursday and Friday off from school, so I met his grandma half way yesterday (I had an appointment in the area, so almost all the miles were deductible. Win, Al!) and today the Rambling wife headed over too.  The Rambling dog and I are enjoying a bachelor weekend. I set my alarm last night, and my tablet said "your alarm is set for 12 hours from now." Other than getting up to pee and, of course, to let the Rambling dog out twice (I'm telling you, he's just like having a newborn that never grows up), and telling the wife goodbye, we both awoke exactly 12 hours later when the alarm sounded (well, I woke up then, the Rambling dog woke up when the bed moved when I got up).

I quartered some onions and potatoes, and put a beef roast that looked too small for all three of us anyway on top of them in the slow cooker. We get much of our beef from the Rambling in laws, and they have their beef butchered just for them, so the packs are often a bit small for us. I opened the roast this AM, and found that not only is it kind of small, about 1/2 of the pack is made up of two huge bones that run through it. My guess is, there is about eight ounces of beef attached.

We DVR The Chew everyday and watch an episode or two many nights when the Rambling wife is home. They always talk about how terrible boneless skinless chicken breasts are (of course, other than an occasional purchase of boneless skinless thighs when they're on sale, that's the only chicken we ever buy) because the bone adds so much flavor and keeps it juicy.

I'm hoping my tiny portion is extra yummy. I'm sure glad I didn't choose that one to make roast beef sandwiches one night.

Mike Hunt and Bob Wolfley have both "left" the JS in the past couple days.

I assume the newspaper industry has finally come to the realization that they will never be in again, and that there are many far better writers on the internet working for free than they are paying salary and benefits to.

Present company not included, of course. I do, however, put out far more material in a week than they do in a month.

The last year or two isn't pretty, for darn near any of us. He just spent the last twenty minutes outside sniffing the leaves that have blown in from all over. With the move to analyticals from "the old ways," we'll probably see GM's receive more pay, and see managers stay level.

Good GM's build franchises. Good managers win when they have good teams, and lose when they don't.

A bit surprised to see Maddon leave TB...he had a great thing going there...if he won, he was God, if he didn't, well, it was TB. He likely knows full well Freidman deserved most all the credit.

Governor Walker said it a few years ago...we all know they have to get 50.5% of the vote, because the cheating makes up about 0.5%.

Did Al Franken win because more than 300 people voted illegally? Quite possible...remember, they "found" those votes in a file cabinet days after the election, during the time they were counting the absentee ballots.

Erin A. said that a fan told her that they paid 5,000 for a ticket. Joe Buck said earlier that Selig has a committee looking into shorter game. Is there still a 5,000 ticket for a two- hour game? How about one and a half?

Some would spend $5K on a piece of pie, or a fancy meal. Guys on Wall Street get a $200K bonus and lose $50K in Atlantic City playing poker and don't even blink an eye.

{There are actually threads on 2+2 detailing such "fish" (bad players) and where they can be found.}

As I have pointed out many times, almost all of the extra time games take can be blamed on added commercial time and more pitching changes, because that's just good strategy. You can also blame a little bit on more throws to 1B and pitchers stepping off, and just standing there, waiting for the batter to back out. 30-40 years ago, they just threw over once in a while and shrugged when Henderson stole 130 bases.

Watch those classic games on MLB this winter. All the players are pudgy, and for the most part, everyone just jogs.

I'd offer Ramirez his option, which he will turn down, and then use his cash to go after a 1B upgrade, as I think Cuddyer or LaRoche (or potential nontenders/trade targets like Ike Davis or Pedro Alvarez) are safer options health wise with either similar or better projections.

One of the few to mention how spendy Parra will be for a reserve. I would also agree they will likely pursue a reliever, though it may well end up being KRod returning. Estrada will be a mighty tough decision as well, though I have to believe he has trade value at $5M.

Heh. That pretty much means the entire liberal platform is whack.

Which it is.

I got an email a couple days ago from a nice gent who asked, simply, why Walker is not further ahead in the polls, as the state is succeeding like gangbusters in the last four years...taxes are down (after rising every single year under Doyle), unemployment is down, spending is down, our deficit has been eliminated, our rainy day fund is growing, and we have a surplus.

I will tell you just what I told him...WI is a "swing state," but it leans left. Many folks are independents that lean left. Walker is doing just what he said he would, and has proven fiscal conservatism works, in case some have forgotten Reagan and his record. Know what? Some folks love high taxes, especially those who do not pay any. Some love irresponsible spending, especially those who get a check every month paid for by the labor of others. Also, there is probably some fatigue by voters on the right, as it seems like we just elected Walker twice (because we did). Add all that up, you have close to a 50/50 split. Sadly.

2015 Marcels are out.

For those unfamiliar, the Marcels tend to be career numbers with park and age adjustments. They usually move young players up a bit, and knock down older ones. It does not forecast breakout campaigns or "corrections" at all. Despite being almost 100% math, it has proven to be almost as accurate as the other commonly utilized forecasts.

I took a quick glace at the Crew and possible 1B targets, and the guy who jumped out at me was Mike Cuddyer, far higher than even Adam LaRoche.

Neshek might well turn his fluke season into a three year deal.

Motte and Masterson will be very nice reclamation projects, especially Justin, whose troubles can likely be traced back to injury and BAbip troubles.

I might be the only one, but I'd love to have AJ as my backup catcher if someone is willing to deal for Maldonado and value him as a slightly below average starter, which he is in my book (with the potential to be better).

I'm surprised HBO has beaten ESPN to the punch on this. ESPN is reimbursed at over $5 a month from cable/satellite, but making themselves available to stream for $8-10 a month would make millions cut the cord.

The silent, unasked question on this is can the nation's internet infrastructure handle this? At night, many times Netflix alone takes up 60-70% of the broadband being used, never mind the millions online surfing the web. Add in ESPN and HBO, many areas would have constant slow downs and outages.

I would imagine it is tougher to stream live than it is regular programming, as no sports, not even UFC or boxing have utilized it yet.

And one more thing the Royals will do...while some of us say (I would say correctly) that mortgaging the future for a wildcard spot is just mathematically can just see teams in the future making moves in July and August to add a win or two to get to 85-87 wins. The old media likes to insist "randomness" does not exist.

162 games is plenty to prove who is better. Let's not pretend 5 or 7 does. That is actually what makes it far more fun. If the world Series was only a single game, it'd get far higher ratings.

10/15/2014 08:56:00 PM

(10/15/2014 08:36:00 PM) - Al

I get criticized all the time. I'm 'the dumbest manager in baseball. I'm OK with that. I know who I am.--Ned Yost

Ned has proven one thing...he can sure develop young talent. He's done that for a pair of teams now, and not worried about if his teams won 75 instead of 77 games while the kids got their feet wet.

To be honest, he probably shows how silly all the strategic talk is. The irony is, all the old media types were saying how much smarter Showalter was, and it simply does not a four game series, it's a roll of the dice...who is hot, who is healthy, and so on. A ground ball through the hole, a blooper that falls in, a nice play on defense...that's three games. Before you know it, the series is over.

If anything, it sure seems like the teams that have won in the postseason have effective bullpens, but there is not much more inconsistent in the sport than a reliever's year to year, even month to month effectiveness. If anything, I'd say it's a sign that reliever depth is vital...or, even better, relievers getting hot the right time, or having 3-4 top guys at the back end...add all that up, it's good to have a plethora of great arms, as whether it's because SP's get tired, or there is extra scouting that makes them less effective, it's hard to find winning clubs that don't have that.

Will this lead to overpaying of relievers? Possibly. It may well also lead to something I've suggested for years...looking at hard throwing young SP's as middle relievers. Even the intelligent Rays' organization seemed to ignore what Wade Davis could do, and concentrated on what he could not.

The one thing I wonder as I see the constant complaining of how often they are bunting in the playoffs on Twitter...I have to wonder if the fans are a few years behind, as with offense down so much this season, bunting probably makes a lot more sense than it has in the past.

I also get the feeling that for the next year or two the old media will be overemphasizing defense, as the Royals and Orioles rank 1/2 in UZR. Of course, 3/4/5 is the Red Sox, Reds, and Braves; so let's not pretend defense is suddenly all that matters. The Dodgers, Tigers, Pirates, and Nationals all made the playoffs with bottom ten can outhit and out pitch your poor defense.

Why do I think this will work?

Because I'm a contrarian. And I know that, for the most part, what people feel is stupid is actually several steps ahead of the game. I've worked in a pair of businesses, retail and sales, in which I have had employers that did not enforce "time on the job" (the retailer in which I began my career had many store directors working 30 hour weeks much of the year).

Most people are stuck in the days of old, and are unable to separate menial, unimportant tasks

$15 an hour minimum wage goofballs

from the people who design video games and banking software; folks who are creative and ahead of the curve. And, to be blunt, most people value working hard instead of working smart; especially the older generations. They would proudly cut firewood all day with a dull saw than take a half hour to sharpen it and get done in a fraction of the time. Why? Because they did an honest day's work for a day's pay, and the early bird got the worm, and a dozen other cliches.

You don't see the CEO of Wal Mart mopping the floors or stocking shelves...but you often see the guy who runs the pretzel stand at the mall making the dough and running the register. He may work "harder," but you can bet your last dollar that he's never going to have a hundred stores either. Years ago, the Rambling father in law expanded his milking herd about four fold. He worked a lot more hours back when he had less cattle...but most of those hours were spent doing what any high school or college kid can do.

And for Michelle to continue pushing a high carb, low protein diet against the better judgement of every single food plan in the past thirty years.

Oh to be overweight and as heavy as Chandler Parsons.

Calling out a player in the media is never the correct response. It's hard to believe it still happens, especially when one considers the players make 5-10 times more.

I have to giggle about this...Dave Stewart, who has been unsuccessful at everything he has done in baseball except pitch (when he was a drug addict) picking a former utility player to manage a team that's not even close to contending, and whose entire roster is made up of scrappy, gritty players.

The odd thing about ARI is they've never seemed to acknowledge the fact they play in a hitter's paradise. The Rockies have done many studies and made changes (humidor, avoided pitchers with a big breaking ball), but have not had a bit of success since they stopped building like a slow pitch softball team.

I think it was Doug who said you don't win with pitching in an offensive environment.

I pondered picking a pair of upsets this week, but ended up going with the favorite in each.

One was the Cowboys.

The other...the Bucs.

I came very close to the pick of the year, as well as the worst pick of the year.

No, I do not know what happens if my "survivor" pick ends up in a tie game.

EDIT: #1 answer on Yahoo Answers:

Some pools you are out with a tie "win to advance".
Some pools you stay in with a tie "one loss you are out"

Since this is a fictional survivor pool, with no official rules, I guess I will continue to pick them, but put an asterisk next to it each week.

If I were to make such a pool in real life, I think I'd count it as a "no game" and make the person pick a pair of games the following week.

Adam files a report with quotes from Doug. Between the lines, Iorg was probably let go due to his inability to work with Segura and Scooter...or the fact they did not like him. Counsell will assist in bringing in candidates, and it sounds like they will join the trend of two hitting coaches (no word if Shelby will be considered), as Guerrero is expected to be 1B coach and infield coach, as was Iorg.

Again, looking at what was said, Doug acts as if they want a younger, excitable guy(s) to replace Narron. Seemed to admit most players don't really listen to hitting coaches at this level...why would they?

I believe this opens up Narron to be Josh Hamilton's "don't drink that" partner again.

Seriously, decisions like this are often made for PR reasons, or to bring in a minor league guy...or even a buddy of the manager's. I would assume Mike Guerrero or John Shelby might move up and the new fellas will replace them. Good luck to them.

Over 14.5 years ago, we brought the happy, curious little Rambling dog home (it was estimated he was 4). About 12 years ago, the Rambling son joined the household. That's a long time, and we've been very fortunate. Heck, I'm sure lots of people have met someone, married someone, and got divorced in that time frame.

That's quite a long time. Two or three times in the past couple months, the Rambling wife and I have spoken, albeit briefly and unofficially, about "end of life" issues (I probably should mention this involves the Rambling dog, not the Rambling son. FYI.) . His pain medication is causing problems with his liver, which is what pain medication does, of course. As we try others, he just does not act like himself. I'm not certain he's "happy" anymore, except, of course, when he's eating. He is very hesitant to do most anything athletic...he refuses to even try to jump up on a chair or sofa, meaning he is probably either in pain or thinks that will cause pain. The irony is, his "bed' is an old easy chair in our bedroom...I put him up on it when I go to bed, and if I hear him jump down, I know he either wants to go out or he wants a drink. Regardless, I get up and either let him out or put him back up on his bed.

In the morning, the Rambling wife lets him out when she gets up (often having to wake him up, which never happened until about six months ago) and then puts him in bed with me. He kicks around the comforter grumpily, walks around in a circle as he has done for 176 months now, and plops himself down, usually accompanied by a loud sigh and exhausted exhale. Many days, when the Rambling wife gets home, she'll go in to change and comment "Gee, I wonder where Ronnie laid down," as the imprint has remained deeply imbedded all day. Even on days I get up shortly thereafter (this morning I had online training and testing to complete, so I got up about 8:15), he does not notice (or in some cases, care). I got done this AM about 11...he strolled out looking exhausted about 11:30. And while he still loves us with all his heart, you can see the mental capacities slipping as well. He's not "all there," and again, we wonder what he's thinking. As I watch him sniff around when he's outside (I've mentioned this before, but his nose is still platinum. He can find a treat thrown to him in the dark in seconds.), I do wonder how winter will bother him, after all, if you have achy joints when it's warm, the cold is bound to make it worse, as it does for many of my clients.

When he joined our household, it was impossible to even imagine a day when we'd be talking about such things. Back when we bought a condo in the Twin Cities, one of the Rambling wife's sisters was going to college there. One of her friends came over with her to our house and said, "Wow. Buying a house. It's like you're...all grown up." I kind of shook my head, as I was 30+ and had considered myself "all grown up" for a decade or more. But, to this young woman, who was probably 21-22, it was a huge step.

This is actually quite similar. When you are growing up, or even when you bring a young dog home, you think of people making decisions like this, as older and wiser. In reality, they are, like us...just older.

Have a good weekend friends.

I promise you that not only has McCain forgotten more about this than anyone in the administration understands, but that Obama giggles and says, "Kurds, that's a funny word," every time it comes up in between fundraisers, 18, and answering softball questions on 60 Minutes.

My Twitter feed informs me some colleges have "fall break" this weekend...many have Monday off (well, it is Columbus Day!) and some took either today or Tuesday off as well.

Many students are using this as an opportunity to study (ha ha, knew I couldn't say it with a straight face) go home, as if you decided on a school more than a couple hours away, it's tough to get home and return on a normal two day weekend.

I must admit though, I can think of no one who "needs a break" more than the average college student taking a dozen credits and living the lifestyle that many of us would need to go to "life fantasy camp" to partake in.

It just occurred to me I have not watched Netflix in ages.

{I looked it up, and in between the Rambling son's nonstop watching of animation and Mythbusters, the last thing I watched was Three Men and a Baby on 8/15.}

I added cable channels for the weekend a couple times in August, which only came with the package which basically gave us every channel, so I DVR'd a ton of movies, and still have not caught up.

Truly, first world pains.

Hopefully, this will bring with it NBA teams each having a minor league team in the NBDL, and a way to send a player down to get playing time and to develop without it counting against your NBA roster limit (or expanding the roster to 18-20).

Oh, and by the way, the NBA is so flush with cash right now, it's almost unbearable. Seeing the free market on display like that, it's literally a liberal's worst nightmare.

LA looks like it will have a NFL team as soon as next year, and two teams (Raiders and Rams) might end up fighting over the city. If your city wants a team, now would be a good time to be pitching a temporary and permanent home to those two clubs.

I'm a little late with this update because I tried using Common Core math and it took me forever.

40 + 13 = 53
5 + 5 = 10, 5 + 5 = 10, 5 + 5 = 10, 5 + 5 = 10
10 + 10 = 20, 10 + 10 = 20
20 + 20 = 40
5 + 5 = 10, 1 + 1 = 2, 2 + 1 = 3
10 + 3 = 13
40 + 13 = 53, finally.  Having to do it this way for 45 persons took me most of the day.  Maybe I still made mistakes.

I had you for down for a 13 -2 week giving you 53 correct for the year.  You are in a tie for first with Prisco from CBS.  Of the 45 I keep track of two have 52, 3 have 51, and 6 have 50.

Heh, what's funny is, this is true.
I do not know what my 2nd loss was last week, the only one I saw was Chicago, who was way ahead early.

EDIT: The Lions, also way ahead early, lost to the Bills. Of course, many of my wins were also comebacks, so it all balances out.
