two-bite super-clean combinations like compressed watermelon with cave-aged AmaBlu cheese

In a bold departure from the complicated, often overly fussy plates that have come to signal New American cuisine--both quotes from the same City Pages Twin Cities article about restaurants

The irony, of course, is they praise such a ridiculously arrogant description in the first, and then refer to "overly fussy" in the second.

And hey, I'm from a small town and consider a meal "fancy" if the table has napkins on it and not paper towels; but what the hell is compressed watermelon? Cave aged? Seriously?

Badgers at noon versus Penn State on BTN.

Bo's fellas are a 19 point favorite, so let's hope they can dominate after being pushed by a tough Buffalo club the other night.

Bucks at 6 versus the Cavs, Lebron may not play, which, of course, would be a shame.

Hard to believe that today is treated just like a holiday or games in college football, the NBA, and the NHL.

The funny thing is, many offices and businesses treat it just like any other day, even though this afternoon's activity will be nonexistent for all but the hospitality industry.

Two days ago, I faxed a sheet of paper to a business. Yesterday, I called them to verify they received it.

Al: So, I faxed you this yesterday around 1, can you verify you got it?

Gent: No sir, I cannot.

Al: OK, when can you verify it?

Gent: When did you fax it again?

Al: About 1PM yesterday.

Gent: We'll get that tomorrow morning. Call anytime tomorrow.

Al: So...the stuff you got faxed to you guys don't look at until tomorrow.

Gent: That's right sir.

Al: That seems very slow and inefficient. You can't take a look for me now and just tell me if it's in your system?

Gent: No. Any item we received yesterday will be taken care of tomorrow.

Al: So, I should call back tomorrow. How late are you there, as tomorrow is the 31st?

Gent: We're here all day, until 4.

Al: So, if you tell me tomorrow you did not receive it yesterday, and I refax it, you won't be able to tell me if you got it until what...Friday, or maybe Monday?

Gent: If you sent in yesterday sir, I'm sure it will be in our queue tomorrow.

Al: Considering you had it a couple minutes after I sent it, and can't tell me if you have it more 24 hours later, and want me to call back tomorrow, so we can do all this again, I wish I shared your confidence.

{hangs up phone}

I'd write a letter and tell them how disappointed I am in their service, but by the time they got back to me, it'd be a different week, and I will have forgotten why I wrote.

He didn't even make it until 9 or 10 the first year, but in year two, we acted as if the New York City countdown was our time zone, and he was none the wiser, and was thrilled he made it.

The in thing is...upscale movie theaters.

Note the comfy seating and fact that some don't even have a ticket booth. Also, they are aimed solely at adults without kids...these are also the client base that can afford the $30 ticket cost (for two) and another $20-30 for food.

We used to love our "cinema cafe" in Woodbury, MN and in Shawano, about 45 minutes from our home in the Wausau area. Even if the movie was "just OK" we would enjoy a pizza or burgers, and often the bill was less than $10 a person, as both showed second run films. During matinees in Woodbury, they would not even charge you for admission until the waitstaff added it to your food bill.

Hey Al,

I read your blog daily and enjoy it a lot. Much like yourself I pride myself as being antisocial and a bit of a contrarian.

I agree with you that Paul Chryst would not of been hired without his past connections to the UW program.  Doesn't  that hold true for Bo Ryan as well? I mean Bo only coached two years of D1 ball at Milwaukee and was barley .500. He had a ton of success at Platteville but D3 coaches never make the jump to a major conference D1 school. He was also a Wisconsin assistant back before his Platteville days.

I don't really know what my point is, I guess I'm hoping the football program has found their version of Bo. Plus as a former resident of SW Wisconsin it warms my heart to see that the school in Madison has to go get Platteville (I'm guessing you know Paul Chryst was a Platteville H.S. Grad and his dad hired Bo to coach at Platteville) guys to win games for them.

Keep up the good work on the blog,

Bo was hired because of his massive success in D3 ball, and the fact he was interested. I'm not sure if his days as a Badgers' assistant were related or not to his hire. Usually D1 coaches come from lesser conferences and from top assistants in D1. Bo was a D1 coach at a lower level conference, who had previous success at the D3 level. It makes perfect sense to me. Dick Bennett also came from a lower level conference, and he had huge success at Point back when it was NAIA. When the day comes when Bo leaves, I'm sure he will want Greg Gard to get the job, and he might. A safer choice would be to bring in a top young coach from the Missouri Valley or the Atlantic 10, good basketball conferences without the notoriety that the Big Ten has. Of course, I can always hope Tony Bennett would contact Alvarez and declare himself interested.

Chryst might be a tremendous hire, I have no clue. When you compare him to other recent Big Ten hires; Harbaugh, Urban Meyer, Jerry Kill (consistent winner at the FCS level), James Franklin (rebuilt Vanderbilt into a winning program), Tim Beckman  (bowl games at Toledo); at best, Chryst is underwhelming.

I've been saying it all year, but it's even more obvious now...Arkansas is in far better shape with their football program than the Badgers are. They improved weekly all season, and are dominating their bowl,

The Hogs have a dominating defense and excellent running game; and went from a crappy team to 3 wins to now winning the very, very tough SEC. Meanwhile the Badgers are, well, a solid team in the weak Big Ten. They may well have plateaued, and just brought in their 3rd coach in 4 years...a guy who would have never been considered if he did not have "connections" to the program.

Rambling family made its New Year's plans tonight. We plan on playing a radio trivia contest the evening of the 31st (last year, we finished 11th out of about 45 teams, though we are at a huge disadvantage by listening online, the questions are delayed by a couple minutes) while enjoying homemade pizza; on the 1st, it's Golden Corral for lunch, and shrimp scampi for dinner.

A little disappointed GC is not open for breakfast on the holiday, as we like going for brunch and starting just as they start changing it over for lunch, about 10:30, but I understand, not many early risers on New Year's (and those that are up are off to the gym).

One year, I worked 12-cl at the craft store, while another manager worked 9:30-4, as we were open 10-6. I got there, did a quick walk of the store, we chatted, and I punched up sales on the computer...we had done $155. Finished the day about $5K, so the morning was about as slow as any day of the entire year. She went to go to lunch about 12:30, and I just told her to go home.

Despite being a noted workaholic (like many at that company, they had never learned to delegate, so they spent most of their time doing busy work, just to look's just how I always imagined the military to be) since she was off the next few days, she actually left. I sent everyone home except a couple cashiers at 4, and after filling in my hours the next day, the district manager called to tell me I must have made a mistake, I had said we only used 30 hours. I told him that was correct, and later that day, he had a conference call asking why some had used 80, and we had only used 30. The answer was simple...many stores had just scheduled a regular day, and I had scheduled very light, knowing it would be slow.

This is one of many times I did things differently than everyone else...later in my career, I was told I was not needed anymore for the exact same reason..."Al, how come you're the only one who does not blindly follow the scheduling computer guidelines?" "Because it wastes hours and leaves us shorthanded when we're busy." "HR insists it doesn't." "That's because HR has never run a store, and never works weekends." "Well, HR says to get rid of you."

Choose your battles, my friends.:) A few months later, I stopped in at the Madison store and was talking to the store manager. He informed me they had "finally told us to ignore the computer program because they found out it ignored sales." Turns out, it just measured tasks, and since you did not do tasks on weekends, it shorted stores so much on Sat/Sun you couldn't even staff the store.

I was a freaking genius, way ahead of my time. But, I was also unemployed. :)

Bucks win in OT at Charlotte.

1. 16th win of season, they won 15 last year.

2. Found out Charter does not offer NBATV in my area, on any plan. That's why I could not locate it, I guess. I "watched" the 4th quarter and OT on Gamechannel, which is basically like going to a high school game and never glancing at the court and just watching the scoreboard.

3. Good win, as you want to split on the road, and they only play the Cavs in CLE on this trip.

A few years ago I chose Newcastle United as "my team" in the English Premier League. I just watched them win last night after the football games were over in a game I DVR'd.

Interestingly, looks like the manager is leaving to go to another team, and NU will be getting compensated for him. A couple months ago, fans were calling for his head.

The EPL is much like college basketball, as the coach is also responsible for acquiring players, as they "run the show" so to speak. Pardew has always been known as a guy who got the most out of his players, but has never had an opportunity with one of the big budget teams.

Both guys on NBC pick Carolina to defeat Arizona next week. I thought I would be the only one, but it looks like a popular pick. Heck, the Panthers might be favored.

EDIT: AFC lines not up yet, as games not finalized, but Panthers are a 4.5 point pick, while the Cowboys are favored by 7. The DAL line seems low, and I think I'd take ARI and the points if I got more than a FG.

(12/28/2014 07:11:00 PM) - Al

Terry Bradshaw wonders who can beat Dallas as well as they are playing, but one has to wonder the same thing about Carolina. The Panthers have won their last four games, by an average score of 28-10.

The Cowboys have scored 38 or more in their last four, all victories.

The Ramblings motto:

Always take the points.

Note the fans always boo when teams bring in the kicking unit, but they also boo when teams fail to convert on 4th down. That's the epitome of casual fandom, and why strategic decisions should never be left to random crowd noise.

I'd love to see a team decide to go for 2 after TD's, unless the math dictated otherwise (up 8, down 4) all season and see how it worked out. Nothing is more dull in sports than an extra point.

UPDATE: At bottom of post.

Merry Christmas to you and your family!
It's hard to believe that this is the last week of the regular season already.  You had a good week with an 11 - 5 record bringing you into a tie for 11th with a total of 160 for the year.  You were the only expert out of 49 to pick Washington to win and one of two to pick Atlanta to win.  Pete Prisco (CBS) had the best week with 12 correct, seven others had 11.  For the season Jamey Eisenberg (CBS) continues to lead with 168, followed by Carter (ESPN) with 167, and then Jackson (ESPN) and Joyner (ESPN) both with 165.  The worst "expert" for the season is Wilson (CBS) with only 137.

No games until Sunday this week.

The bold was added by me, because I have so little to brag about.

Thank you to Jim for doing this little recap weekly all season. It does not seem like much, but I hate having to add them up and keep track. Interesting to see how I fared versus people that actually spend more than 90 seconds on their picks too. I wish they would keep track of how the "favorite" did each week, as I assume that they would have about the same as myself.

FYI: Jim emailed to say he does keep track of the "favored" team each week, and thus far, the team the line has favored has 161 correct. Hence, one more than me.

Lesson to be learned...don't overthink it. The favorite wins most of the time.

After the family enjoyed A Christmas Story for an infiniteth time on Xmas Eve, I watched several episodes of Alaska: The Last Frontier, which features Jewel's dad and extended family as they hunt, fish, farm, and survive in rugged rural Alaska.

I recall we were talking at the office earlier this year, and one of the veteran, more mature folks talked about how, in the 50's and 60's, many farm families still had outhouses, even though their homes had long been equipped with running water and the capability to have a toilet inside. Why? Because it was looked at as being arrogant or bragging to do so. Many did not install them until well after even lower class homes all had them, perhaps into the 70's and 80's.

So, one of the families just installed a water line into the home, and the guy, who I think would be either Jewel's brother or cousin, said, "My wife and I are in agreement that we're still going to have an outhouse."

Well, of course. Nothing beats a fifty yard walk outside at 4AM in January on the Alaskan coast.

As the little girl said in Xmas Vacation, "I like it here. You don't have to get dressed to go to the bathroom."

So, Chinese food really is more popular on Xmas Day.

I'm not sure if this is just young people being rebellious, or is it because people are just sick of ham, turkey, and traditional holiday fare? Or, is it related to the fact many pizza places, and even other types of restaurants, such as Mexican, are closed that day?

This is why we must have the internet.

300+ theaters end up with The Interview, though many, in WI at least, are small town, smaller venues. Not a single Milwaukee/Madison theater among them...too busy being politically correct to realize how ignorant and shortsighted. Gutless.

They are history's greatest retailer for a reason. Every time I question it, I remind myself they do 30 turns a year (for those unfamiliar with retail terms, this means they sell their entire inventory 30 times a year), while no company I ever worked for was able to do more than 4-6.

If you ever wonder how it's possible that most theater chains have declared bankruptcy at least once, despite having 90+ margins on concessions such as popcorn, pop, and candy...we're seeing why. They are incredibly stupid, and wimpy as well.

Most seem to think the movie will do very well per location, despite the fact the trailer was unfunny and dumb. Many say they're going to see it just to "make a point," and I might do this as well, if I was a frequent moviegoer and if it was playing near me.

Players say they were disappointed with effort. The Hornets are playing well and hitting tons of shots. Good to see the players care and all, but I think they were just beat by a better team playing well right now.

The only thing I worry about is they should be better at home, barely better than on the road thus far.

Bucks' players having a player's only meeting after the game...has lasted 50 minutes. Nate Wolters just walked by reporters waiting...I assume he might be flying home to MN tonight for Xmas Eve.

Odd such a meeting is taking place...the Bucks had a solid 2-2 road trip, and while they lost to Charlotte tonight in MIL, the Hornets are on a good run, having won five in a row. Be interesting to hear why it was called.

Crew claims Shane Peterson, LH hitting OF/1B. Shane was claimed by the Cubs a week ago from the A's.

Unlike you might guess, he appears to have good speed (84 SB's, 17 CS's), and has played over 100 games in each OF spot. And, the past two years at least, he has hit LHP as well as RHP.

Depending on what happens with Parra, Peterson may well have his sights set on the 4th OF spot.

Brewers claimed him last week too, but was awarded to the Cubs due to their record last season.

I wish he pretended to be a fraction as upset over the death of two cops as he was the deaths of criminals who happened to be black. The fact he is not is why we lack respect for him.

The irony is, to him, it's all about race. That's why he has the such a terrible record on anything race related.

You can take everything they have and not get $1. We're talking about career criminals and government leeches here. I doubt if a single one of them could pass a drug test, or a literacy test.

The city of Milwaukee would balk at being responsible for a buy one, get one free DQ coupon.

Because that's how they roll. They have done nothing to assist in finding a place to put the new arena, despite downtown Milwaukee being made up mostly of abandoned factories and warehouses.

That said, the new owners seem to be doing everything to get this done, and many "insiders" feel something will be announced soon. The money seems to already be there, as Governor Walker has said the NBA players' income taxes, said to be about $11M a year, would seemingly take care of the rest, and would be fair game to such a project.

Terrific BYU/Memphis bowl today, marred by a postgame brawl that included the fellas from Utah getting in some cheap shots that were very unholy.

In a day or two, the stories of travelpocolypse will begin...for those unaware of the term, it's when yuppies who have plenty of time off around the holidays decide to travel on the busiest days of the years, and then bitch and moan how badly they were treated because weather and mechanical delays caused them to miss a flight or get where they were going a few hours or a day late.

First world problems. Modern travel is luxurious, fast, and comfy; but no one bothers to notice.

It's a shame. Don't let 'em drag you down. And don't be afraid to mock them. Loud and long.

The other day, I did my yearly eye doc appointment. She asked about my antibiotic ointment, which I use to help combat the "gunk" or "crust" my eyes tend to have. I was honest, told her I only use it when it's bad, instead of every night before bed. She told me to use it as directed for a couple weeks, as they seemed very dry, probably drying out as they try to wash away the gunk. Sure enough, last night I noticed my eyes looked clear, and I had not rubbed them or had trouble all weekend. Score one for the doc.

This morning, my right eye is only about 25% open, I have a huge, painful stye on it. I put a warm compress on it for a few minutes and it did nothing, and remains very sore and irritating. In theory, you would think the ointment should have prevented it, or at least stopped it from becoming so large, as it's the same thing they gave me to treat a stye years ago. I guess not.

The difference between the left and myself? Their mock outrage is at the attire Upton wears during this ad.

Obama's approval rating with our military...15%.

I would think foot fungus would get higher than 15%. Granted, the armed forces tends to skew heavily Republican, due to several factors...they want a strong national defense, they are usually pro gun, and they want a president who is strong and has their back.

The difference between the reaction for W and for Obama at the link is very telling. You can't fool those guys, and Obama's lack of respect towards what they do, which he has never tried to hide, shines right through.

That's because they are only selfish imbeciles, they aren't really protesting anything.

In reality, looking at the facts, they are "protesting" that police officers have the right (and responsibility, for that matter) to protect themselves when some thug attacks them.

Besides, it's not like they have a job or girlfriends to occupy their time. They are dependent losers who suck money from others and the taxpayers. Tomorrow, they'll find something else to do. But, they will always blame others for their lack of success.

The lack of personal responsibility always leads to the lack of achievement.

Very interesting decision for the Lions and Packers next hard and try to win while risking injury, or go at it with reserves and enter the playoffs healthy.

Most fans would, of course, say a full effort should be given. If Rodgers were to go down, many would have a change of heart immediately.

We had an early Xmas at my wife's grandparents this afternoon, and then stopped to pick up a few things on the way home. We have a pair of friend's Xmas parties tonight. I'm extremely jealous that you are watching sports and relaxing.

First of all, note PF can't even sign his name for fear of retribution. Good luck with all that. And by the way, while we joke about it, it's easy to live in the Rambling manner...just don't go. You are not required to go to every minor get together your codependent inlaws throw together.

Back when the Rambling wife was the Rambling fiancee, I spent Xmas Eve at her house (after working until 5 or 6), went to midnight mass (at midnight, you gotta be freaking kidding me, the church was so packed, they opened the doors about halfway through to let the cold air in to get it down to about 80 degrees), and then went to her grandparent's "afterparty," which went from about 1:30-3. I then spent the entire Xmas Day there, drove home Xmas night, worked at 5AM the 26th, worked all day the 27th, and then drove home to my family's thing on the 28th (my boss grumbled that he had to work that day, since it was a Sunday). And then, Monday was the start of another work week. I'm tired just typing it up, never mind living it.

I decided then that we weren't going to do that every year, so we stopped. Some call it selfish, some call it antisocial. I call it common sense, and doing what I want. Sometimes, her grandparents will say, "We sure don't get to see you very often." Until a couple years ago, I would just say to myself, "Too bad you spend three months in Arizona then." If you're afraid of the cold weather even when you don't have to spend a minute outside, you're gonna have some tradeoffs.

(12/20/2014 04:06:00 PM) - Al

Had to turn the thermostat up to 68 since the Rambling in laws are over for the weekend.

You may not think 68 is warm, but it is when you're used to 65 (and 60 at night and on weekdays from 9-4), 68 is the equator. I'm sweating like midsummer.

The Rambling wife went to a holiday get together with some gal friends today, and then stopped to pick up a couple things. She complained how busy it was.

One, of course, she was part of the problem. Two, the Saturday before Xmas is almost always the busiest shopping day of the season.

It's extremely difficult to run a business with such horrendous customer service as to only have someone available from 9-1 and 2-5 on weekdays. It's horrifying to run a business so badly as to lose $60M every single day, whether you open the doors or not.

But to do both, you need a perfect storm of indifference, inefficiency, and a complete lack of skin in the game.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the federal government.

The Rays might not be long for Tampa. There really is not a major league city and stadium ready to go, but if Vegas, or any other city, wants to get a $500M ballpark approved and ready to break ground (along with a temporary home while it is built), I'd say they might well be gone in a few seasons.

Sanders suspended tonight for touch foul.

Goodness gracious. What a bunch of wimps. Moncrief was doing color last night, and said that should be a flagrant, as it's far more dangerous than other types. But it's not, and the NBA is overreacting. They need to decide on the rules and go from there.

What's especially maddening is Brandon Knight was shoved earlier in the game and no one even questioned it. Sanders is likely being punished for past transgressions, and it leaves the Bucks with only nine players tonight. That includes Nate wolters and Johnny O Bryant, who have barely stepped on the court this season.

Rowen is a very interesting reliever, has been lights out in minors, incredible BB/K ratio, mindbogglingly low HR's allowed, but according to Fangraphs, he's a two pitch guy...a ":fastball" that averages 79 mph and a slider at 73 mph. I would assume he might well be a sidearmer or submarine style guy.

He's a tempting guy in my eye because he's had success and has 2 or 3 options left. He did not face many LH hitters in the majors, but did get them out in AAA.

I've never been so embarrassed as I am watching Ray Lewis, who we all know killed a guy, tell us how a player is supposed to act after the game.

Jay Cutler has the exact same demeanor as Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers, very professional, very analytical. The Bears are not a dynamic team, and Cutler is probably closer to mediocre than he is top five. But to pretend he's the problem is just not paying attention. You used to hear the same silly stuff about Tony Romo too, he'd get blamed when DAL scored 45 points.

Here's a thought...what team would we cheer for if the Brewers had never ended up in MIL? I would assume the options would be the Cubs, White Sox, and Twins (would any team have broadcast games into WI?), but, with technology the way it is, maybe I would have become a Rockies fan after they were named as a new team.

Would the city have eventually received an expansion team? One would doubt it, as Miller Park would not exist without Selig's forward thinking, and there's no way the city of Milwaukee could have gotten out of its own way to get it done.

In one month alone, Nov 2014, jihadists killed 5,042 people across the globe. You can stop making the school shooting comparison now.--Counter Moonbat

Remember, Mike Moore said we should just ignore terrorism and not worry about it, since you can never fully stop it. He's truly the Neville Chamberlain of the modern day.

Again, the left wants you to look the other way so you don't realize the vastness of the problem. School shootings are not only incredibly rare, but it's impossible to not be against. The only disagreement is how to combat it. Common sense tells you no madmen are going to be slowed by passing a law, as thousand of gun laws are on the books now, and criminals just ignore them. Heck, if laws worked, we wouldn't have anyone with drug problems.

Bucks win on a 3 at the buzzer that rolled around the rim, in and out, and off the backboard.

They are far better than they were last year, and way luckier too.

ESPN just pointed out the game had six lead changes in the last 40 seconds. Fun ballgame. Kidd reminds me of Bo Ryan a bit...lets his assistants map out a play, does not call time out when behind, just yells out a play or a formation and lets his players run it.

Why? You'd lie too if your results were that bad. The key is, keep bringing up stuff that the rubes think is "an emergency"...climate change, police brutality, whatever the story of the day is. In reality, the "emergency" is the fact that Obama has almost added as much to the debt in six years as we did in the first 232...and despite being almost mathematically impossible, his economy has managed to remain in a malaise his entire time in office despite this dumping of funds into the economy.

I'm not sure what the next "emergency" will be, but I do know it will be "very important that we deal wioth it immediately."

Brewers keep being linked to Allen Craig, who was very good before getting injured.

The problem is, he's been subpar for two seasons, and has 3y/$26M guaranteed left. I like him a lot, and I'm positive injuries have bothered him. UW given exemption to state hiring law, only has to wait five business days.

If they would have done that last time, they would not have ended up with Andersen, as several better known coaches could not leave their programs in limbo for weeks.

Another week with some crazy results.  How can anyone pick Oakland over SF or Carolina over NO?  LaCanfora (CBS), Corbett (USA), and Davis (USA) had the best week with a 13 - 3 record.  You had a very respectable 11 - 5 week.  Only 14 of the 49 "experts" had a better week than you.  Eisenberg (CBS) continues to lead with 147 correct.  Your total of 137 puts you in a tie for 12th.

Good luck picking,

I considered the Raiders, because SF was coming off a win and were playing SEA the week after. That said, I figured, "well, SF is just a lot better than OAK." NO has been great at home for years, but terrible this season...maybe ought to consider that, huh?

Brewers have two minor league vets chosen in AAA portion of minor league draft, Sean Halton and Kentrail Davis.

I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but both could have easily been protected if the Crew had chosen to do so. This appears to be more of a Eric Farris move, simply allowing a veteran to move on to another organization in which he may have a better opportunity. Teams often take players in the minor league Rule 5 just to fill out a roster, for example, if a team has no OF's ready for AAA, a team might take a couple guys in the minor league Rule 5 just to have some warm bodies in camp. The number of players taken that have went on to have a substantial big league career are almost none...but, a few reserves and middle relievers have come out of it.

Halton is not a bad bench player, able to play 1B/LF/RF and provide a tad of RH pop. Davis was a former high draft pick who has OBP skills and can play all three OF spots. Both are probably just organizational soldiers, though both could find themselves on a major league team at some point, they are probably correctly placed at AAA.

This is mostly mock surprise to the Gary Andersen move.

1. Wisconsin is, at best, trying mightily to hold onto the "top of the hill" appeal it had a few years ago. It's very difficult with only 85 scholarships. One can sense it, very few freshman/sophomore contributors.

2. The Big Ten is a ghost of what it once was. The SEC is loaded, top to bottom. The Big Ten, while likely the 2nd best overall, is light years behind the SEC, and well behind other conferences athletically.

3. Andersen is a west coast guy, and is headed back home.

It sure seems strange to me that Roenicke (and Melvin, to a lesser extent) keep talking up waiver acquisition Luis Jimenez as a possible platoon partner with Lind and backup 3B to Ramirez, while Jason Rogers seems to have so much more going for him; such as the ability to play LF and RF, better AAA numbers (947 career OPS vs. 812, despite Luis' home park being more offensive friendly).

Maybe it's something very simple, like Jason is an atrocious fielder at 3B, while Jimenez is said to be very good with the glove. Rogers is also a bit "husky," so maybe he looks awkward in the field regardless of where he plays.

This is exactly what the future holds for many of the players signing bloated contracts for too much and too long thus far. Look, we all know teams are soon to get more TV money, but that doesn't mean you have to spend it on 30+ guys who aren't really that good.

A's to trade for excellent young SS. That seems a lot to give up for a single season for a solid, but not elite SP. I guess the Sox have an even better SS prospect, so they may be undervaluing this one just because of that.

Rosenthal reporting Crew is willing to move Parra, might be a good option for a team that loses out on Melky Cabrera.

I was thinking something similar last night. Too spendy for a 4th OF, and as much as Doug spoke highly of Davis' numbers, I don't think they want him sitting one game each series. If healthy, Gomez and Braun are playing 150 games. The math just doesn't work. There are far less expensive options, and many of them are almost as good. Heck, Logan Schafer is as good a defender, and I still think he'll hit if he gets AB's.

UAB, Ohio, Middle Tennessee State...three of the four teams who are bowl eligible but not going to a bowl, per my homework. I'm not sure why this fascinates me so, other than you know, no bowl would choose to take the pudgy kid from the small town. Not sure if Georgia Slouthern, who won enough games, but lost their appeal to go to a bowl, as they are in their first season of FBS play, is the mystery 4th team or not.

EDIT: Nope, 80 teams were bowl eligible without Georgia Southern, meaning 4 did not get chosen.

EDIT 2: Now reading that since Oklahoma State and Temple won yesterday, there are six teams that are bowl eligible that were not invited. Two of them are Temple and Texas State, but still one left.

EDIT 3: The 6th is Old Dominion. The Sun Belt and Conference USA get no respect at all.

Three evaluators told me that Craig will have a market if the Red Sox decide to deal him. The Marlins and Brewers have been interested. One evaluator told me there’s no way Craig is done as a premier hitter at age 30, and that foot injuries derailed his season. The evaluator said the Red Sox should be careful on this one and stick to their original evaluation of him — a clutch, impact, professional bat when he’s right.--Boston Globe

However, Craig is owed a lot of money...$26M over three years, I think. I agree he is almost certainly been bothered by injury, but not only is it a risk, it's a lot to pay for a bench guy. Barring a monumental trade, possibly including Braun, I do not see it.

The Big Ten appears to have one of the four bowl eligible teams that won't make it to a bowl, due to too many teams having six wins and all the bowls having some sort of conference "tie ins" (kickbacks, bribes, whatever the in word for funds exchanging hands is these days).

Ohio State did move up into the top four last night. I was shocked Vegas had the Badgers favored by 4, partially due to the Buckeyes' QB being injured. I expected the Buckeyes to win (not by THAT margin), as they were simply a far better team.

I just read yesterday that while the line often moves 2-3 points on news that the QB is hurt (even more for a Manning or Rodgers), the line rarely moves at all if a top player on the line or defense goes down. There are people who probably just wait for this to happen and bet such games, but I'm sure they do it discreetly, as they don't want said strategy becoming well known.

Let me summarize.

The woman lied.

The reporter did not care, just wanted a story.

The magazine din't care either.

Now, with minimal, basic fact checks, the story has completely fallen apart.

This is very likely why no charges were ever filed. At worst, something happened that cannot be proven. Regardless, all the parties involved, especially Rolling Stone and the reporter (who has done this before), should be ashamed of themselves.

Rolling Stone's lies and false reporting is almost identical to the rest of the old media's leaving out the truth about Ferguson and Trayvon Martin.

This is what happens when the media makes the news rather than reporting the facts. You end up with a biased viewpoint in which everyone always looks guilty, but no convictions ever occur. Notice the NFL follows this too...the best running back to ever play the game will miss an entire season because of a misdemeanor and public outrage that followed, totally unrelated to the actual crime.

There's a reason we have the greatest court system in the world. It takes the emotion away. That's why we used to have so many hangings and stonings in the rush to judgement in our nation's history.

The mythical ceiling for a really good closer remains at about $10M. Miller gets less because he signed for four years instead of three, and probably because he has not been a "closer" which some clubs likely still value, however silly it is.

And yes, Papelbon got more, because the Phillies are poorly run.

Doug Melvin recap from 105.7FM interview, his words paraphrased in italics:

Hart had a nice season after Prince left, but felt had to upgrade somewhere, afraid to miss out on FA market. Counsell stressed we needed a LH bat in middle of lineup. Many compliments from AL GM's who feel he's a pure hitter. Lucroy might play some 1B, Luis Jimenez also a sleeper, playing well in winter ball, Asian teams offering to purchase him.

Not difficult to find a guy who can hit LHP and play 1B. Hopefully, either Rogers or Jimenez step forward and fill the role cheaply.

Not sure what happened late in season, Ramirez and Braun each had 5 RBI's in September. Just tough to explain. Always want to get off to a good start, and OAK, ATL, and MIL did, and all faded late. Tough to put together six good months.

I've said it a dozen times, 162 is a long time to have good fortune and hide a weakness. All that really matters is how many you win total.

Segura is young, league has adjusted. SS's are tough to find. some teams have no one at SS if season opened today. Need him to keep defending well and get on base. Feel he may have been bothered by extension talks his agent turned down. No offer on the table, and team is not going to talk extensions during spring training anymore. Tough for guys mentally to concentrate on so many things. Probably not as good as his rookie year, better than last.

Said Jean hung around MIL a month after the season, came into talk well after season was over. I would agree on his future. Still say he has been playing "beat up" much of his career. Simply not running as well as he did early.

Defense making a comeback, used to have many SS's that were offensive minded, not anymore.

Game has changed, defense easier to measure with numbers now.

Won 82 games, very slight difference between 82 and 87-88.

Very true. A healthier Braun and getting more innings from Garza may have had them at 85. All good teams are healthy teams.

Pitching was 10th in league, hitting was 6th, yet we all talk about improving the offense. Offense was down all over last year. Braun struggled a bit, but offense was down everywhere.

Much of the hitting "trouble" was simply facing good pitching. Didn't struggle to score versus hacks.

Very happy up the middle, with Lucroy, Gennett, Segura, and Gomez. Another GM said the other day "you guys have real players" meaning solid everyday players. Lots of teams have part time players playing every day.

Doug said several times they like all eight of their position players. Any major trade would likely involve getting younger and cheaper, and a SP like Lohse or Gallardo, guys on one season contracts, might well have appeal to a team that is not comfy or loses out on Lester and others going to get 5+ years at $20M per.

Counsell feels team is in top 3 in MLB as far as developing their minor leaguers. Khris Davis has hit 47 2B's and 33 HR's in 630 MLB AB's, DBacks just paid a Cuban player $80M and hope he can do something like that.

Davis and Gennett were never "prospects" according to the minor league gurus, and are still overlooked. Meanwhile, those top 100 guys still can't hit, but they sure run fast and have good tools.

Have to embrace young players, let them play. On some teams, Scooter, Nelson, Fiers, and so on would still be in the minors, behind guys signed as FA's making $10-12M a year. Talent backs up a bit, but it's still there. Brewers always let young players play when they show they are ready. Many teams have a high ranked system, brag about it, and have a $180M payroll.

Very true. The Dodgers let their top OF rot at AAA, paid Crawford $20M to sit on the bench.

Not sure if Weeks finds a job as a starting 2B. Still will get on base, .350 OBP guy.

He's a near perfect fit as a 2B/1B/LF/RF/DH reserve who can get 400 AB's, if he allows himself to realize he is a weak defender at 2B, so being a weak defender elsewhere is far from tragic. He will probably age nicely too, because he walks.

Scooter will get chance versus LHP, has to, but manager and results will decide how much.

Results matter. They had to pay Rickie regardless, so he was a nice fit. As long as the utility infielder (H Gomez is getting a lot of play for a career AAA SS) can spell Scooter against a tough lefty (they ain't worried about Joe Generic Southpaw, it's Jon Lester and the top ten MLB LHSP's) they will be fine.

Ramirez needs to have a better season, probably will get 15-20 games off as he gets older. That seems to be a trend in the NBA. Gotta be careful to not burn him out. Tough to replace him, both a 3B and a middle of the order hitter. Did not expect Aramis to return, looked for him to get a 2-3 year deal as a FA. Thrilled to have him.

I've discussed this trend as well. Other sports giving days off early.

Happy to have kept Aramis, and also added Lind. Parra and Broxton were added last year knowing they would return in '15. Feel team is better than a year ago.

Doug often has an interesting viewpoint, and this sounds like a Counsellism.

Fans look at free agency, we don't get involved in that a whole lot.

And when they do, it's a guy like Lohse who was overlooked. Few top FA's want to come to MIL, and MIL can't afford to give one guy 5-7 years.

Six players on one year deals. Have never really rebuilt like other teams. Been trying to win every year, even big market teams have rebuilt for years. Lakers, Knicks, and Celtics are rebuilding. Cubs and Mets. Have not had a top ten pick in the past seven years. Not involved in Japanese or Cuban bidding wars. Concentrate on scouting and development, what we do best.

You can't do stuff like the big market teams, because they can just outspend you. Have to be different.

Need to improve OBP, but not with a new position player replacing on of the current guys. 2-3 mentions about how good Khris Davis is for a young player. Teams have asked about him.

Several mentions of Davis being a player to build around, a player MIL needs to develop. Hosts mentioned arm, Doug said there are plenty of players with good arms, and few that have 80 extra base hits in 630 AB's.

Host mentions Emilio Bonafacio is a popular target among fans. Plays lots of spots. Does not run like he used to, unlikely to come to MIL because we have a starter at every spot, FA's look for a team where they can start a lot, and get 450 AB's. Herrera basically does same thing. Likes SS's, Segura, Hector Gomez, and have a guy a couple years away that might be the MVP in Venezuela in Orlando Arcia.

Arcia is a true SS and whose minor league offense is similar to Scooter's, age and numbers. Herrera is probably best suited to be in AAA and then come up as injuries hit, but his minor league and major league stats mirror Emilio's.

Doug not sure he wants to go with one closer, guy blows a couple games, everyone looking for a new closer. Will talk to Ron. Likes Broxton, Smith, and Jeffress to all close games, maybe split closing chances. Likes Wang a lot for future, best control and change up in AFL.

Doug scoffed at the "having Wang in the first half led to the bullpen struggling in the second half" of those things that just sounds ignorant...because it is.

Roenicke will be the manager and not be on the hot seat if team starts slowly. Tough finding a guy who will listen and use analytics.

Many managers still refuse to even platoon and look at splits and, you know, 1970/80's stuff. Hosts mentioned Gardenhire, Doug discussed he was a good baseball man, but many guys go with hunches and their gut. Read between the lines.

Tough to be patient, could have kept Lawrie, Brantley, Cain, Escobar, Odorozzi; would not have won in 2008 or 2010, but who knows what would have happened? Doug said impatience is much in vogue, and have talked to Mark about it. Teams always want to do something instead of waiting back.

Not sure how the won/loss record would have ended up, but one thing for sure...Doug would not still be the GM. The Rays have tried it, more out of financial necessity, and they have had scattered success, but no attendance and no consistency. I forget who said it, maybe Jim Bowden, but the old saying, "Prospects and potential get you fired" remains true. With the cash flowing in from local and national TV, spending it on a mediocre FA instead of letting kids play is very much the preferred path.

No talk at all about adding pitching, which is where I see bargains developing and signings taking place. They can't ignore the fact they have Thornburg and Henderson on the mend, but for much of last year, they had Wang, Duke, and KRod all on the 25 man, and unless Frankie returns, that's three spots open. Kintzler will be back, and Broxton, Smith, and Jeffress will be too. That's four. Add in the fact relievers often sign 1-2 year contracts, and often for less than $3M per...that's an inexpensive place to solidify. Heck, Tyler and Jim both have options remaining too (as does Brandon and Will), and even if they are healthy, they might not be 100% and/or need time off. Use that to keep guys rested. That's another reason Elian is a nice guy to have, bouncing back and forth as they need a 13th pitcher.
