(3/31/2015 08:39:00 PM) - Al

Bucks plan to announce new colors and possibly uniforms tomorrow.

No offense to forest/dark green, but I think the main color should be one a tad more popular; black, blue, purple. I'll also note that whenever uniforms are unique, like the early Charlotte Hornets ones that were one of the first to use teal, were roundly hated...and were then a top seller for years, despite them never being a popular or winning team.

(3/31/2015 08:26:00 PM) - Al

Brewers release David Herndon, who was likely signed to be in the AAA bullpen. I assume that means they have plenty of healthy arms ticketed for Colorado Springs, including Ariel Pena, Dave Gofourth, Rob Wooten, and others.

(3/31/2015 08:11:00 PM) - Al

Just noticed the Bucks and the Badgers both play at basically the same time Saturday evening. I realize it isn't nearly as "important," but it could turn out to be very important as the Bucks hope to make the playoffs.

Last year, I watched the first 6-7 innings of the Brewers, then DVR'd the rest of it and watched the Badgers, and then watched the rest, which turned out to be an extra inning affair, after the Badgers concluded, which, if memory serves, was 10PM or so, just like this year will be.

The irony is, the guy doesn't even have a job, and he still thinks he's better than everyone else.

Someone asked on Facebook today if people still get together for Easter.

Nope.

As I explained, most families are too spread out to drive that far for a single meal. Heck, I'm 2.5 hours away my from in laws, and I'm not going, even though my mom in law is a fine cook. Not worth 5 hours on the road though. The Rambling son is over there for spring break, and the Rambling wife is heading over right after work Friday. If they lived across town, I'd go, but not 150 miles.

Growing up, we almost always went somewhere, or some aunts and uncles would come to our house. Of course, we all lived within 5 miles of each other.

Brewers GM Doug Melvin does not anticipate adding any players from outside of the organization for the Opening Day roster, tweets Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Rather, all roster decisions will pertain to players already in the system.

They pretty much know who is and who is not going to make other teams, as they chat with them all the time, especially if they have a guy they are looking at. Besides, they already have a pair of guys, Gomez and Jimenez, without options, and obviously, Parra isn't going down. Clark, or whoever gets the 25th spot, will likely be the only guy that can easily go up and down.

The Brewers and Aramis Ramirez will meet to discuss how he’ll be used this season, reports Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Leg injuries plagued Ramirez last year, so the thought is that frequent rest could improve his durability. The current plan is to sit him once a week with other off days built in as needed. Of course, no plan will be immutable. Ramirez and the Brewers will respond to how he feels and matchups.

Aramis should probably sit most day games after night games, as he is unlikely to be successful playing 18 innings in 20 hours or so. No one has discussed it, but Clark used to play 3B, and would be a nice option, especially if Jimenez struggles or they're facing a tough RHP.

(3/30/2015 09:30:00 AM) - Al

On behalf of the State of Wisconsin, I want to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Trooper Trevor Casper. And on a personal level, Tonette and I offer our prayers, today and in the days to come, to Trooper Casper's parents Kevin and Deborah, his sisters Lauren and Olivia, his grandmother and grandfather, his dear friend Brittany, and to all of his other family and friends. Thank you for sharing Trevor with us all.

We also offer our prayers to his extended family in the Wisconsin State Patrol, and to law enforcement officials all across this state and around the country. There are representatives from nearly every state here today. We mourn with you - and we thank God every day for men and women like Trevor who are willing to serve.

Flags across this state fly at half-staff - both as a sign of respect to the family, friends and co-workers of Trooper Casper, and also as a symbol of our collective sorrow here in Wisconsin in losing one of our finest.
Trevor Casper was born ready to do this job. We heard that time and time again this week - from his parents, from the police chief here in town, from his classmates at the academy.

As Kiel Police Chief Dave Funkhauser told my office earlier this week, Trevor understood the importance of "protect and serve" at an early age. He said that Trooper Casper had all of the attributes he would want of his own officers. He said you could talk to anyone in Kiel and they would tell you that Trevor was true, and real, and good.

Zac Bohlman went through the academy with Trevor and told us of how excited Trooper Casper was to be at the academy. He said that they had just had a conversation about how they both loved the Fond du Lac area and their work.

Chris Reyna also went to the academy with Trevor. Chris spent more than two decades in the United States Military and so he was the oldest in the class. Trevor was the youngest, yet they bonded.
Chris told us that he asked Trevor on the second day of the academy if he was ready for this and Trevor said, "I was born ready."

Chris said that he respected how focused and committed Trevor was to protect and serve. As Chris said, Trevor was wise beyond his years.

Kyle Dudek roomed with Trevor at the academy and got to know him as a positive force in the crowd. If anyone was struggling, he said Trevor was there to cheer them up. The two hit it off as they were both excited to serve in the state patrol and they both shared a love for hunting, fishing and wrestling.

Kyle said he spoke with Trevor about their training and how they would act when facing dangerous situations. Kyle said that Trevor was unwavering in his commitment to uphold his oath and eliminate the threat to protect others, even though it would mean putting his own life in danger.

That is exactly what Trooper Trevor Casper was doing on Tuesday, March 24, 2015. He was doing what he was trained to do. He was eliminating the threat. He was showing what it means to protect and serve. He was doing what he was born to do.--Governor Walker

This was Walker's statement about Casper.

Our president will not be making a statement, because Casper is not black. Sad but true.

The Elite Eight game between Kentucky and Notre Dame on TBS drew 14.7 million total viewers, the most-viewed college basketball game ever on cable television and the most-watched program in the history of TBS.--SI.com

This is why live sports gets such huge rights fees, and why we are nowhere near the bubble, despite cries of such from socialists.

How Brian Anderson went from a day off to flying to Cleveland to call the Kentucky/Notre Dame the next day.

We're almost certain not to have BA much longer, as he is certainly one of the top 4-5 top play by play guys in the business, and some of the guys above him (Vin Scully, Marv Albert, Joe Buck) are either very old or very mediocre; only in the business due to nepotism. Not only is he excellent, but he's also very "normal" and non irritating (the opposite being Matt Vasgersian, who many hate and many love).

It wouldn't surprise me at all if he becomes the lead announcer on a network soon...when Al Michaels retires, I'd think he'd be a favorite to take over on SNF.

President? Might be a stretch for her not to go to prison.

(3/29/2015 07:34:00 PM) - Al

Chris Perez was told he would not be making the team, and they asked if he would go to AAA. He requested his release to try and find a major league job.

I assume that means the Crew either did not feel Perez was worth removing someone from the 40 and risk losing them...or, he simply was not better than younger players already on the 40 or in the organization. Unless they look onto the waiver wire or into minor league camp (Ariel Pena?), that would leave Blazek, Thornburg, and Wooten fighting for the last two bullpen spots.

EDIT: JS is reporting Doug says they wanted to keep more relievers who have options left, giving them flexibility for roster moves. Preferred that to Perez.

If he is unable to find a major league job in the next couple days, they will talk about going to Colorado Springs to get some work to begin the season.

According to Vegaswatch, a well respected and funded betting group bet on WI at numerous sports books in Vegas today, causing the line to fall from 5.5-6 points to its current 5.

In the sports betting world, that would be known as "smart money"...of course, there are a limited number of legal sports books to use to spread out the money equally.

(3/29/2015 02:48:00 PM) - Al

The more you hear about Governor Walker's family, the more you realize that the reason they seem like good, regular people is that they are just good, regular people.

The funny part is, while losers like the Clintons bring on their own problems with interns, cattle futures, and erasing damning evidence before being tried for treason; the Walkers have survived...and thrived the left's worst efforts...death threats against his wife and kids, and come out of it battle tested and stronger than ever.

The irony is, the left practices bad behavior, and then lies about nonexistent bad behavior on the right. I'm not sure how Dems can quietly sit by and allow this to occur. I'm glad my side did not choose to look the other way when tough votes about slavery, voting rights for blacks, and late term abortions had to be made.

Thankfully, Abe Lincoln did not vote "present" when he was leading the country through the Civil War. And we wonder why Obama can't make a decision now...he never had to before, because he was too busy playing politics.

And even better, Walker has proven he can actually cut taxes, cur spending, and despite predictions otherwise...the sky has not fallen. Fiscal responsibility is not a passing fad; it's just good economics and common sense policy.

3/29/2015 02:48:00 PM

(3/29/2015 02:14:00 PM) - Al

Kintzler sent down to AAA. He had a rough spring, and more importantly, struggled most of last year, though his ERA was passable. He still had two options, so it is pretty painless, and barring a pickup, will allow two of Wooten, Thornburg, Perez, or Blazek to go north.

That said, I would expect Kintzler to go down, possibly get back to basics a bit, and spend most of 2015 in the bigs. While mildly surprising at first, given the fact he has options and others are pitching well, it might be a good opportunity for him to "work out issues" in a low pressure atmosphere, where he can go out and pitch a frame or two without concern of the result.

That, after all, is what the minors are for.

3/29/2015 02:14:00 PM

(3/29/2015 01:29:00 PM) - Al

Vegas will be a huge success when they are finally given pro sports, and the only question will be what took so long. The irony is, they really are not a gambling area anymore, as 98% of Americans have a casino within a couple hours of their home...they are an entertainment capital, and will draw large amounts of visiting fans, in addition to the pro sport starved home fans.

It's kind of sad how shortsighted these leagues have been to realize this. None have wanted to be the first, even though the reward will be far greater.

This is why I'm a contrarian. The public is often nothing but blind followers of bad decisions.

(3/29/2015 11:47:00 AM) - Al

Or, no one will even notice.

If you ever notice, every time the left comes up with an idea, it involves taking something away, or causing pain.

If ever anything summed up their beliefs nicely, that does.

We have to have Obamacare, because we have 30M people, mostly young healthy adults, that do not have health care. So now, we have 35-40M uninsured, almost everyone pays more for lesser coverage, and have more restrictions than they did.

And oh, by the way, it is completely unfunded, and is very likely unconstitutional. We're in the best of hands.

The amazing thing is, the left would move us very close to North Korea's ways...if only us damn evil capitalists and Constitution lovers would get the hell out of the way.

Well, I ain't movin'. And to be blunt, I'll fight them every inch of the way. They would fix the economy by making everyone a have not. It's the only thing they understand.

GM Doug Melvin has recently discussed an extension to his contract with the Brewers, although it’s unlikely he and the team will agree to one before the season starts, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writes. Melvin’s contract expires after the 2015 season. Counting his previous job with the Rangers, Melvin has now been a GM for about two decades, and it sounds like he remains at least somewhat enthusiastic about continuing. “I still think I’m good at what I do and I still enjoy it,” he says. “I like the draft-and-development part of the job and that’s something we’ll always have to do in our market.”--MLBTR

Al,

You have mentioned on several occasions the 25 man roster is all but set, but have never said who is on it.

Art

Barring injury, or late waiver claims/trades, of course.

Lohse, Peralta, Garza, Fiers, Nelson

KRod, Broxton, Jeffress, Smith, Cotts, Perez, Kintzler

Lucroy, Maldonado

Lind, Gennett, Segura, Ramirez, H Gomez, Jimenez, Clark

Davis, C Gomez, Braun, Parra

All are probably locks at this point except Clark, Perez, and Nelson...Clark is that 25th man who is just going to be used as a bench bat (though he could be used for defense in place of Lind or Lucroy), Perez has to have a 40 man spot found for him (he could be replaced by Thornburg or even Blazek, but the team sounds like they want to stretch them out as SP's), and Nelson has only been mediocre, though he still appears he will be given a chance to fail before they go with someone else.

What I've learned from the old media:

1. It is completely inappropriate for a man to look at a woman, no matter how risque or suggestive her outfit is.

2. It is totally appropriate for a woman to ogle a man...in fact, it is expected. As Mindy Kaling says in the Nationwide ad, "There are worse things than an attractive woman touching your body."

If you change that to simple phrase to "an attractive man" it would to be followed by a dozen PSA's basically saying men are bad, women are good, and if you disagree, you are anti woman.

This reminds me of when Obama insists that a child who survives a late term abortion not be revived, because he's so in bed with the abortion industry, he has managed to remove common sense from the equation.

The argument boiled down: Religious freedom isn't an absolute right. But forcing someone to make flower arrangements for your gay wedding is.--David Harsanyi

As I said yesterday, businesses have the right to refuse business. If they do so, the public has every right to not patronize said business. Losing sight of freedom because a gay couple has to go to a second bakery...grow up. Quit losing sight of the big picture by getting caught up in the minutia of whatever silly sky is falling issue the old media thinks is all important today but will be forgotten tomorrow.

Brian Wardle, basketball coach of UWGB, has been hired by Bradley.

Good move for him, as the Missouri Valley is far higher ranked conference than the Horizon. Also good to see the "allegations" that he, you know, yelled at some players and had them run a lot (apparently, my 7th grade basketball coach was a darn meanie too) has been rightfully forgotten.

Diamond Stone commits to Mayland.

Immeasurable loss for the Badgers, as they could have lost the player of the year and barely noticed. Stone is likely a one and done, but would have easily been the best big man Bo Ryan has ever had on campus.

Badgers and Arizona are the first Elite Eight rematch since 1974. That's a long, long time.

Louisville and NC State are both ACC teams, and are the first Sweet 16 matchup between conference foes since 1986. Seems to me no conference teams should be in the same "pod" until next round, barring a conference having nine or more teams, of course. Not sure if the committee messed up, or if trying to have teams play closer to home led to this.

Badgers play at 5:09 tomorrow, by the way. Zona opened as a 2 point favorite.

Dave Pinto runs the Crew's numbers on the offense. His estimated improvement is almost solely due to Adam Lind's projections being better than the '14 actuals, which were mostly Reynolds, Overbay, and Clark...and for whatever reason, Reynolds struggled mightily versus LHP compared to his career.

Very kind words being spoken about Mike Blazek, who pitched well in AAA last year in the 2nd half and has looked good this spring.

I always giggle when message boards, who are wrong several times more than they are right, kept removing him from the 40 man every time a spot was needed last season. The mere fact he was being tried as a SP is an excellent sign, and it almost always means the team likes the player, as SP's have far more value than bullpen fodder. As often happens, his improvement was lost because he had a 5ish ERA and it went down very slowly...hence, his good second half was masked by this.

The fact is, he throws in the mid 90's, so he can always be moved back to the bullpen. So many forget that results in the minors are secondary, it's where young players go to get better, work on their 2nd and 3rd pitches, and so on.

Minneapolis gets the latest expansion team in MLS, as long as they can get a stadium in place. The city and county are very much in favor of it, and soccer specific stadiums usually "only" cost about $100-125M, so it should get done, even as the state ponders why it built two football stadiums that will each sit empty 355 days a year.

In fairness, the Obamas have been trying to fix nothing but fictional problems. It's because they do not believe in American exceptionalism, and because they are not the most patriotic folks around.

Sadly, when you gather a group of these negative nellies, all they will do is complain about capitalism, bitch about free markets, and attempt to solve these "issues" by doing stupid things like adding socialist values to the greatest nation to ever exist on the planet.

Remember, they started Obamacare (which would cover everyone for less, we were told, do not forget) to "cure" the problem of 30M people not being insured. Now, after throwing trillions (it's unfunded, remember) at this problem, more people are uninsured than before, because he's so much smarter than we are. We now spend oodles more on school lunches with have doubled/tripled the waste, leaves kids hungry, and is 2-3 decades behind food science, as it considers all proteins bad and all carbs good.

Why do they create fictional problems? Because they no idea how to solve real ones...his debt in six years equals the first 232 years (and two world wars, and 9/11, and putting a man on the moon), and their idea of foreign policy is blaming Israel for defending themselves and saying ISIS is a JV team that's not Islamic (it's the first I, for Christ sakes).

If that was your record, you'd insist the sky was falling because of climate change too.

Maybe a more telling sign of how good Kaminsky has been is that 16 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal is labeled an "off night."

Played 38 minutes too. Sure would have been nice to have Jackson on the floor when Koenig sat with 3 fouls. He's a 3 year starter, and without him, their depth is minimal.

Kaminsky with a bit of an off night.

Didn't hit a good percentage of 3's.

Missed a few FT's.

Won by 7.

We are one spoiled group. The thing I hate about a team like Oregon is if there was one player who shoots all the time is "on," there really isn't anything you can do, as he takes low percentage shots all the time.

Not thrilled with the schedule/travel situation, flying back from Omaha late tonight, then have to play Thursday in LA. North Carolina has more flight time and time zone differential, but they have an extra day to rest as well.

3/22/2015 05:52:00 PM

(3/22/2015 04:17:00 PM) - Al

I like the idea of a bigger roster, because it would help small market teams...since those extra three guys would all pretty much be cheap role players...a lefty reliever, a power bench bat, a speedy reserve who would be used almost solely as a PR, maybe another middle reliever.

I doubt many teams would add a 6th SP...few teams have 5 good ones, never mind 6. I would guess most teams would limit their SP's a bit more, they'd probably average about 5-5.1 frames (they average about 5.2 now). Also, the reason no one plays 162 games is common sense...Cal Ripken Jr's September stats speak for themselves. A well rested, healthy average player is better than a tired, beat up all star. Ripken was simply too selfish to admit it wasn't all about him. The sad thing is, he's remembered for a meaningless streak instead of being an incredibly good offensive SS.

It's taken the San Antonio Spurs resting healthy players to make people realize that veterans especially, respond to less wear and tear. The rub? Many teams don't have enough talent and depth to rest their top players 15-20 games. That's one thing the A's tend to do well, they find platoon/reserves that have warts, but are good at something. They often lack star power, but they have 12-13 position players that are above average, and often undervalued.

It used to be a bunch of slow, unathletic guys with good OBP, and over the years, they have found whatever the market does not pay for...relievers who do not throw hard, ground ball pitchers, putting CF's in all three OF slots, C's that can hit and handle pitchers, but not throw at a plus level, and so on.

Beane has done this for one reason...he simply does not have the budget to do what everyone else does, so he is forced to do things differently. Doug is too, and is probably the best in the game at finding guys on waivers, or on minor league deals that end up contributing. Doug also has had success simply by being honest and up front...remember, Jeffress had offers to go on the 40 man for teams, but chose to come back to MIL, where he had a comfort zone...and because Doug promised him and his agent he'd be up as soon as he got himself back up in shape and his velocity back. Doug let Sean Halton and Kentrail Davis go elsewhere this winter in the minor league Rule 5, because he did not see them getting major league time in MIL...though they may have, if injuries would have hit.

I wish the Brewers' draft picks that quit after a couple years and go play college football would be as ethical.

I have no problem with them keeping the money if they are injured playing the game, and none if they just suck and get released. But if they quit because they can't hit the curveball (before their seven season contract is up), they should pay back the percentage they never earned.

Wichita State is only a one point underdog in their 7/2 matchup with Kansas. Northern Iowa a two point favorite over Louisville, that's a 5/4. Apparently, I'm not the only one who thinks the Missouri Valley is a vastly underrated conference.

There are barely any upsets at this point, as Michigan State, a 7 seed, is playing as well as anyone in the country. I picked both the Spartans and the Buckeyes to make it to next weekend, and Ohio State played very well, but just fell short.

I think Tony Bennett's team has overachieved the entire year, as I have not been impressed with them whenever I have seen them play, often struggling to win on the road versus sub .500 teams, though the ACC is a tough, deep conference.

If not for live sports, we would not bother with cable. Netflix and over the air is all we would bother to have. There's about a zillion others out there just like us. There is no substitute for live sports.

Like it or not, she behaved badly. There's a million single men out there, and she chose to get involved with one she knew was married (put your own "but it was Hillary" joke here). What a silly thing to get excited about.

First of all, allow me to say this...is there any big negatives about this? No, not really. That said, these teams play 162 games in a season. These guys who somehow think this is a big deal are the same ones who think a guy hitting .250 or .350 in the first couple weeks of March mean something.

Of course, as usual, what is being forgotten?

--Some teams might have to play a doubleheader on the final day. Heck, some might have to play another game Monday.

--Um, rain delays?

--Irony? All but a few teams will be playing for nothing this final day, even those in the playoffs? This will likely only impact 2-4 teams.

--The real irony? It's a football Sunday. Most fans will never even notice it.

Five minute scouting report on Diamond Stone?

--Incredibly athletic for being 7 feet tall, runs well, shoots from outside with good form. Blocks shots without leaving his feet. Maybe a tad slow getting back on defense, but, of course, his team is up 30. One of the best passers for a big man I've ever seen in HS. Better than Brian Butch was at that age. As with all great players, looks kind of bored.

Don't think he'll dominate as a freshman in college, but he looks good enough to play 25-30 minutes from day one.

Never for a second allow it to be said that this is not the greatest country in the history of the planet. In many nations, even today, he would have been killed or institutionalized soon after birth. The USA has always taken good care of the disabled, educating and taking care of their basic needs. This gent sounds like a guy many of us would have loved to have watched a game with.

Pastornicky rushed to the majors at a position he could not play (SS). Released a couple years later, even though he still might have a future at 2B or 3B, or as a utility guy (one could argue he could play SS if he played behind an extreme fly ball staff/pitcher).

The strange thing is, teams insist they'll be patient, but after about half a season, they tend to let that slip their mind. Gomez is one of the best CF's in the game, and while the Mets dealt him for Santana, the Twins simply felt he had peaked...at 24.

The odd thing is, the Twins seem to be doing the same thing with Aaron Hicks, a great fielding young CF, whose maanged to put up a decent OPS (about equal to Jacque Jones had), but he has a low BA and plays for a team that doesn't seem to take walks into account.

Roenicke extended thru '16, Melvin likely to follow.

I have guessed once or twice that Doug's next contract may be his last, or he may even choose to retire after this season/contract, as he is 60+ and admitted it is a young man's position, because of the hours involved as well as the ups and downs.

Usually, the manager is hired by the GM, and it is odd that the manager has more years on his deal than the GM, as with length of contract comes security...you can certainly still be fired, but you have to be paid.

If nothing else, Mark A is not the type that wants to be answering questions any time the team has a 4 game losing streak.

Al,

Might the Brewers send Nelson down to begin the season, as a 5th starter is not needed until the 20th?

GB

First of all, a 5th SP will be needed on the 19th...and that's if the off days hold, always a challenge in ballparks without a roof. So, in theory, your suggestion could occur, as players have to stay down for ten days barring injury. I have not heard any discussion of this, but if Nelson can pitch every 5th day in AAA (or even in warmer weather in high A or AA) and stay on track, it might make perfect sense to do so.

MLS have chosen Mpls for its last expansion team in this go round, and have chosen the ownership group which involves the United/TWolves/Twins owners...but not the Vikings, meaning they need yet another stadium to be built, which will be the 4th in the past 5 years and the 5th in the last dozen.

The funny thing is, the Timberwolves still play in one of the oldest arenas in the NBA while the Gophers' Williams Arena is so old, you can't even call it antiquated...just old.

Just a hint, build it so it is expandable to 30K or so...many soccer specific stadiums built of late are just too damn small.

EDIT: It would be the 5th in 5 years, because St. Pail is building a new little ballpark for the Saints.

Watched the 30 for 30 on Christian Laettner last night, and as one who always roots against Duke, just because they always win, I was very puzzled and a bit taken aback. I mean, guys that write books called "Duke Sucks" and wear Tshirts that say "I still hate Laettner"...my goodness, grow the hell up.

He was an outstanding college player, and like many top athletes, was not a really nice person. I still root against Duke, but have to admit they run a clean program and are a model program. Is there a reason to strongly dislike him? I sure can't think of one.

The one thing I was most puzzled by was the way the show could not understand why all the Duke players and Laettner himself seemed to adore the fact they were despised, and they were always the biggest game on the opponent's schedule.

In one of my softball leagues years ago, we were the best team for several years running. We were also a very confident group, as we knew we were good, and expected to win.  Most of my teams were either average or a bit below average. Some were pretty weak, made worse by the fact we did not play to win, if 14 people showed up, they extra 4 would play the 2nd half, often in place of our better starters. Often, we would play teams at the top of the league, and after three innings, it'd be 4-3, and I'd feel like we had a chance, and then they would have a 12 run inning. It was so much fun to be the team that was so good and so disliked.

Simply put, no one hates the mediocre. When someone goes out of their way to loathe you, you know you're really, really good and respected. It's really, really great.

I have been adding vanilla extract to my Sodastream diet root beer and diet Dr. Pete (three guesses what flavor that is similar too) and I really enjoy it. The Rambling son is watching shows from the weekend on the DVR relaxing after school, and he went out to get a snack, so I had him bring me some diet Fountain Mist (Mountain Dew) and, without thinking, told him to add a couple drops of vanilla extract.

Turns out, Dew with vanilla is delicious. I fully expect this to be a new flavor soon, promoted heavily in ads with sweaty teens, outdoor activity, and a catchy slogan.

As Seinfeld once said, I must be putting too much ice in mine.

BTN is replaying the Badgers/Spartans title game at 6PM this evening. I think I will DVR it and then watch the last eight minutes or so of regulation and then overtime.

The way I remember it, the Badgers pretty much hit every shot they took and Michigan State missed every shot...sure, those are signs of great play, but it also was a lor of good fortune.

Funny thing is, as I suspected, they were already a #1 regardless, per the committee chair after the 68 teams were announced.

Bo Ryan told football team put game on scoreboard during their first spring practice, got a little weepy. He was very emotional after the game too. Does this mean anything?

Some might say he's decided to retire after the season and he knows he's going through evrrything for the last time. Would I?

Well, it will happen one of these years. I have no idea if he has talked to Alvarez about a succession plan or not, as I'm sure Bo would prefer his longtime top assistant Greg Gard get the job, while a proven winning program in the Big Ten would have their choice of any head coach in a mid major or any top assistant in the sport.

If Bo says he's leaving in 2-3 years, and Gard will take over when he does...stuff like that has been done before (Dean Smith, I think; Larry Brown already has his replacement in place and announced when he took over at SMU). We will soon find out.

EDIT: Dean Smith retired just before the start of a season, and his top assitant was signed to a 5 year deal. Dick Bennett likely chose to retire when he did to allow Brad Soderbergh the chance to coach.

Badgers play about 8:30PM Friday night.

3/15/2015 09:34:00 PM

(3/15/2015 05:14:00 PM) - Al

Kansas very happy to be #2 to Kentucky's #1. They looked like someone kicked them in the groin.

Wichita State a notch or two lower than they should be, tourney loss really hurt. Indiana in easily, not even close to not making the field. I like the Shockers to upset KU.

Valpo a very tough first round matchup for Maryland in the opener.

Badgers almost have to be on the top line, as they seemingly would have been in Omaha as the closest to home top #2 seed.

Northern Iowa should be a notch higher too...5? No way. I have them over Louisville.

Virginia falls off the #1 line.

Michigan State versus Virgina? Great game on the opening weekend.

Dayton plays at home in the "first four" game, huge advantage. The A10 is always underrated.

Badgers looking at North Florida? Texas Southern?

St. John's is a 9 seed, and have slumped of late, and suspended their starting C. They might be one of the weakest at large teams in the field.

North Dakota State, full of WI natives, will give Gonzaga all they can handle.

Looks like TX Southern for the Badgers.

Pac 12 teams always seem to underachieve in the tourney. UCLA looks like the most inexplicable choice in the past 3-4 years...and they made it easily, not even close to the bubble.

In Omaha, get to play Friday. Take tomorrow off and get back to work.

Coastal Carolina is in South Carolina, and a former coworker of mine has her daughter attending that school. So much for rooting for them. They gave someone a very tough first game last season, were ahead until very late.

Oregon or Oklahoma State in round two...not an easy matchup, to say the least. ORE would be a rematch of last year.

North Carolina or Arkansas both good teams for the 3rd round, Arizona/Baylor most likely if they play a 4th game.

3/15/2015 05:14:00 PM

(3/15/2015 05:03:00 PM) - Al

Better lucky than good. Michigan State shot the lights out all game, and then missed open shots late. Koenig had a fine game, but his turnover late in regulation could have easily decided the game...again, they just missed the open jumper as time expired.

State will be a 4-6 seed, so you can see how easy it is for the Badgers to lose any game after round one...they could lose that too, but it's very unlikely, as not only will they face a team that is lower ranked, but one that will probably not have the size or athletic ability to stay with them for 40 minutes. Their opponent will probably only have a shooter's chance.

Henderson not throwing as hard as he has in past. Hopefully he just needs to "build up the strength" in his shoulder, but considering he has options, and he missed so much time last year, one would think he is an underdog to making the team when they go north...especially when one considers non roster invite Chris Perez is expected to make the team.

KRod
Broxton
Smith
Jeffress
Kintzler
Perez
Cotts

Barring injury, that's probably the seven that will open the campaign, and why the fact Thornburg and Henderson having options is so important. The braintrust has stated they plan to "stretch Tyler out," whether that means as 5 frames as a SP or in 2-3 inning stints as a reliever remains to be seen.

Who else is in the mix? Well, Rob Wooten is steady, but far from spectacular, a 3.50-4 ERA type guy. Ariel Pena has pitched well this spring, and has always had the talent, just never put it all together, but is not on the 40. David Goforth is on the 40 and has looked good in a tiny sample, but has pitched late in games, probably has not faced a major leaguer yet, and is not considered ready. Jungmann is going to start somewhere, so he's not in consideration.

So, if everyone stays healthy, I'd say it's mostly just a question if Perez has his velocity and stuff...if so, he's on; if not, probably Wooten.

The only reliever out of options is Jeffress (and of course, KRod, Broxton, and Cotts have too much major league time to go down without agreeing to do so, regardless of options).

If one were to make a similar list with SP's, I'd say it's Jungmann, Thornburg, Blazek, and Pena backing up the starting five, though a veteran stopgap would probably be brought in even if they had to dip down past Taylor.

Every single bracket "expert" has the Badgers as a #1 seed, and the argument is still on if today's title game matters...many of us think the game will end too late for the committee to care, as they can't just change a 1 and 2 and be done...no team from the same conference can meet until the Final Four, so "flipping" a 1 and 2 would mean changing every "pod" from top to bottom.

Heh. You never even hear race mentioned except by those on the left. I personally haven't heard the n word said by a white person in over a decade...but about a thousand times by black comedians. It's a shame, but it's a sign of not being educated.

You really have to be far left to not love the Palins. I can see many of my clients, friends, and people in my hometown as nearly identical.

I know three young women that were pregnant in high school that have went on to be successful, and Bristol is one of them. That's a miraculous comeback in life, to say the least.

Roenicke says they do not know how they will use 5th OF spot; if they'll go with a guy who can run and bunt or more of a power guy. I threw that out a week or two ago, as I suggested Jason Rogers and Matt Clark might be considered.

Whoever it is, they might well end up bouncing back and forth between AAA and the bigs if they need a 13th pitcher or 3rd C or something. It wouldn't surprise me if they might claim someone on waivers who has been DFA'd at the end of March, especially if they find a player who can play all three OF spots (and in a perfect world, 1B too, and be a RH or switch hitter) and has options left.

I can't say who I would rather see the Badgers' face, as Maryland has shown they can beat them, and Michigan State, regardless of talent, will play very physical and if nothing else, give them a very tough game which could leave them beat up.

(3/14/2015 01:47:00 PM) - Al

When we were at the Dells with the Rambling in laws a couple weekends ago, one of my brothers in law, who lives in MN, asked why and how the Badgers were so good. I said the thing was, in many games, they'd be up a few points, maybe 3, maybe 5, maybe 7, and you think it'll go down to the wire...and all of a sudden, they hit a 3, they steal the ball, other team hurries a shot, suddenly, you look, and they're up 14. The Rambling dad in law agreed, saying they always seemed to go on a run and rarely even had a close game.

Other very good teams simply have trouble matching up with them for 40 minutes. 20, sure. 25 maybe, 30 sometimes. But eventually, the cream rises.

Seeing Dekker play and act like he's having so much fun gives me hope he might return next season.

He'd almost certainly be taken in the first round, which is a guaranteed contract and millions of dollars, but it's strange he could be a lottery pick and never been the best player on his college team.

I feel the same way about Wil Ferrell playing in exhibition games as I do about rich guys in hot air balloons trying to set some sort of "record" no one knows or cares about.

Attention whores will seek attention. And the old media will gladly cover them, because it's easy.

Yes, it's for charity, though Ferrell could donate 5% of his earnings and mention the cause while promoting movies and raise more cash and awareness. There may be some minor benefit to MLB here, as many non and casual fans have heard about Ferrell's exploits and marketing is always a good thing.

Nice piece on Purdue using a few days of Navy Seals training to build teamwork and toughness.

One of the MLB clubs, I think the Mets, did this last year and was ridiculed, sadly, mostly by the analytics community. What's so ironic is, the ones who have adapted new ways of thinking and using numbers, are often very slow to even consider any idea that may seem "out of the box." Of course, many are just anti military and would find a way to be critical of anything with the Navy's or "special forces" name involved.

Watching girls state until the Badgers begin. Barneveld has a D1 prospect, Hannah Whitish. You can always pretty much tell the D1's, as they appear bored because they're simply so much better. Also, on defense, they kind of float around, as they have been told not to commit any fouls. because they have to be on the court.

Talk about a dearth of girls' recruiting sites. There is nothing out there compared to the guys side.

Did you ever think you'd live to see the day the Pope was more of a hawk than a U.S. president?--Dillon

Heh. The pope, however misguided and simple in his world view, will at least admit foreign policy exists. Our president only cares about legacy points, so that means ignoring wrongs, past promises, and the USA's leadership position. He doesn't understand why Israel insists on defending itself against attacks within thier borders, that's about out of touch as any ruler has been in the past couple millenniums.

Six years ago, Sarah Palin said Russia would invade Ukraine on Obama's watch. When it happened, Obama shrugged his shoulders, said no one saw that coming, and pretended a signed agreement signed just a few years ago by Bill Clinton promising to defend Ukraine did not exist. Putin laughs himself to sleep every night at our inability to give a damn about...anything.

And let us never forget, not only is ISIS not Islam (it's the first I), they're just a JV team.

Thor: The rest will just have to wait.

The Rambling wife refuses to buy anything but Jif creamy, but when she bought a cheap store brand at Aldi for a recipe of some kind, I could sure tell the difference...though I can't say it was worse, but it sure spread a lot harder. I'd like to buy some cashew or almond butter, but I would have to justify it by skipping a couple meals, they are so expensive.

Badgers with a far tougher game than many expected, but still win by 11, which believe it or not, the NCAA uses to "grade" wins, a win by 10 or more is considered a "good win," while a 10+ point loss is a "bad loss."

Much has been made of how many time outs there are late in the college game, but one thing to keep in mind...the last ten minutes take about 25-30 minutes to play. There are so many breaks, teams don't have to substitute at all, for the most part. The bench really only matters for the first 30. After that, unless foul trouble comes into play, it's your top 5 versus their top 5.

The Cards are smart enough to realize last year was a fluke.

Neshek has been very good versus RH's his entire career, and very mediocre versus LH's. Last year, he was very good against both...though in the second half, pretty much back to his norm. His 0.70 ERA in the first half was directly related to his .172 BAbip, an unsustainable outcome if ever there was one.

Big congrats goes out to Brandon Gilbeck who picked up his first D1 offer from Western Illinois University.--Scott Smith

Brandon is the son of a high school classmate of mine, is 6-11, and is dominating at his HS level, River Valley is a game away from the state tourney. Meanwhile, Stevens Point has several very good players and none have a hint of anything but mid major offers, although the Badgers are still scouting Sam Hauser, who is 6-6 and hits 56%...of his 3's. Seriously.

Shows you just how good those Big Ten recruits are.

The Rambling wife and I were just discussing whether or not The Chew taped today, and that led to why they play high school sports in the morning hours, when no one wants to be playing or watching. It's really too bad for the kids and fans. That led me back to my thoughts last year, as to someday, they will add an extra day onto the boys and girls tourneys, which would mean 2-3 finals would be played on Sunday.

I still feel that way. Some feel the WIAA is hesitant to do so because no one wants to play on Sunday, but that fails the common sense test.

1. It's just a couple days a year, and only effects a handful of teams.

2. Schools already have events on Sunday, in our area, it is common for plays, band and choir concerts, and hockey games (ice time is precious) to occur on Sunday.

3. They already play the finals on Sunday...in Kentucky (and likely many others, but KY was easily found using Google).

I do wish the WIAA would do something about the disparity in talent between public and private schools. Obviously, the private schools do far more recruiting and usually have far better teams than a similarly sized public school. I do not know if they use some sort of "multiplier" now or not, but they need to use a larger one if they do, or begin to use one if they do not.

Penn State upsets Iowa.

Peaking at the right time is a great thing if you can do it, but it's not something you can plan, for the most part.
