Davies can pitch, without a doubt. There will continue to be questions about his durability, stamina, and ability to ever go 200 innings because of his build, but, no doubt when he is on, he can retire big league hitters.

Lopez will start the final game of the season. Look for Cravy to be the given a chance to "steal" a win if the situation presents itself, as while wins are not a very meaningful stat, it hurts a young guy's feelings to be 0-whatever, moreso when one considers Tyler pitched nicely several times.

(9/30/2015 10:33:00 PM) - Al

No SS in the game could have made that play after it hit the lip of the grass. Giving an error on that play is just complete ignorance. They need to pay attention and go by the rulebook version, rather than the "back in my day" stupidity. Right now, we give errors on nearly impossible plays, making it a laughable stat.

I think it's great that while we're supposed to be politically correct and all, Hardees/Carl Jr's runs stuff like this.

Third baseman Matt Dominguez split the season between Fresno and Colorado Springs and posted a .990 fielding percentage in 106 games at the hot corner. Following the season, Dominguez, 26, was claimed on waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays.--MiLB.com on minor league Gold Glove winners

The strange thing about this is, Matt had plenty of time in the majors, and was -7 UZR/150 in his three seasons in the majors, though his DRS was +1. Did he improve, or are good fielding 3B difficult to find in the minors? The fact is, many MLB 3B end up being moved down the defensive spectrum to the hot corner, so many of the 3B of tomorrow are currently playing SS or 2B in the minors.

The Rambling brother and I were emailing our thoughts on playing softball back home. I found it strange he said how nobody liked a certain player, and I could only remember him as not being a favorite of mine, but not someone I disliked. He responded that this guy used to be very tough on "fringe" players, as he politely put it, but I was talented enough, I had escaped his wrath.

Funny, I had almost forgotten I was, at one time, at least an above average player, especially when one considers my physical limitations, as I was always slow afoot, and never had anything but doubles power, though, fittingly, I was all about OBP, way back before it was cool.

One guy said once to me "your glove is where base hits go to die." Tough to be known for infield defense in slow pitch softball. It's like being the prettiest girl at ugly camp, but it's all I got.

Like most Onion articles, this is not really funny. That said, it rings a bell for many of us who hear many people dread going to weddings, but still do so, often wasting many weekends a year...and many in the summer, at nuptials that won't last more than a couple years, because they feel obligated to do so.

Being anti social pays off in many ways, but the main one...my weekends are free, because on the rare occasions I do get an invite, I know how to check the no box on the RSVP.

The three worst teams in MLB in April.

Brewers: 5-17
Rangers: 7-14
Indians: 7-14

The Tribe is still alive in the wildcard race (mathematically, not realistically), and the Rangers are leading the AL West and have almost clinched a playoff spot.

Remember how many folks said the season was over after April? They jumped the gun. The Crew is on a 69 win pace for the season, and is on a 74 win pace since May, which is probably more representative of the talent level of MIL, though after dealing six veterans at the deadline, many would argue that as well.

Youngsters, while talented, are often several seasons from reaching their potential/peak.

Barrios gets away with fastballs right down the middle because he's hitting 95-96 with them. Reminds me of a young John Axford, except for that difference in height and John was more albino in skin tone.

He's so diminutive too, I bet hitters have trouble picking up his release point, it's probably 6-12 inches lower than the average RHP. That might be something hitters pick up after seeing him a couple times.

Wagner and Pena will start the first two games of the season ending Cubs' series, I would assume either Cravy or Lopez would get the ball the last day of the season, though if it is not Jorge, it might just be a bullpen game and hence, could be anyone.

Stearns trying to get to know Counsell, and looks to decide on a front office staff.

I don't think Stearns ever worked with him, but the SL organization director who was basically fired for guessing Luhnow's passwords, would be a guy to consider unless MLB has given him some sort of blackball. The Cards have had a lot of success, and while some things cannot be transferred (their small market population but large market revenue, due to tradition and the fact their market size is far larger than MLB considers), some things can.

(9/29/2015 09:40:00 PM) - Al

Segura is a below average hitter and an average fielder (I still say his defensive metrics are a bit skewed because he plays 81 games in Miller Park each year, where an elderly fella who makes far too many error calls is the official scorer, but, hence, I digress), but even that is far better than many teams have, such as the Padres, who currently have a 2B playing SS, and it shows. Jean will have his share of suitors, because he is a solid SS, albeit, probably not in the top 15 (or maybe even 20) in the game.

EDIT: Suspended 4 games. Surprised they did not make it the rest of the season.

EDIT 2: Due to an existing suspension, Paps is out for the rest of the season. Heh. As a contrarian, my first thought is how inexpensive he'd be in trade.

Papelbon has already apologized and admitted he acted badly, which I wonder if he did after being told to do so or be suspended.

Seeing stuff like that makes you appreciate Doug's tenure with the team, which has been almost entirely quiet, with only the minor spat between Prince and Manny Parra ever being seen or publicized.

ADDED: Heyman thinks the Nats might release Papelbon, and that no team will take him. I think he's overreacting, as I promise you a few teams (ARI jumps to mind) will see it as a positive. That said, few teams can afford an $11M, 70 inning closer. Add to it he has said he only wants to close, and there will be few suitors...but all it takes is one. A team not expected to contend (much like PHIL this year) can use him to close and then trade him in July, though DC will likely have to pay half or more of his salary to get him to go away.

One of the Rambling brother in laws (actually, I think the correct term is Rambling sister in laws husband, but, let's be honest, I don't care) shot a moose on a hunting trip in 2014, and one time the Rambling in laws gave us beef, they threw in some moose steaks, warning us they were not very tender.

After turning on the slow cooker last night, I have discovered it takes about 14 hours to make it easy to eat. With sugar free BBQ sauce, black pepper, and garlic powder, I pronounce it...decent.

Meanwhile, the Rambling wife bought the best pork roast I've ever had. Much like watermelon, while I simply cannot pick a good one, she blindly grabs the one on top and it is perfectly marbled, and almost melts in your mouth.

Growing up, the only soccer I could usually find on TV was on PBS, a heavily edited game involving German teams, I think.

An embarrassment of riches.

Funny MLB is having every game play at 2PM Central time the last day of the season, and still only has national coverage on TBS, limiting most folks to only seeing a single game, as even this season, 3-4 might be meaningful. You would think they would have MLB, FS1, ESPN all set up, if for nothing else, for practice and to promote the game, some sort of "every game counts" type of thing. They are still very amateurish in their marketing in this social media, in your face era.

Orlando Arcia wins a minor league Gold Glove, which I did not know existed until this very moment.

As smooth as Yadiel Rivera looks in the field, if Arcia is better than that, he might be crazy good. Of course, Orlando can actually hit, and is a couple years younger as well.

Al,

A while back, but really all season, you kept pointing out that all Jason Rogers does is hit. After yesterday, fans are wondering if he is an option at 1B next year if Lind is dealt. All it took was a game winning grand slam for folks to come over to your side.

Matt

All it took. .378/.456 along with a .300 BA to entice those who still use that number.

Add that to .372/.466 in about 2300 minor league PA's, it's almost like you see a trend emerging.

Funny how we see things differently.

Rosenthal gave up 3 HR's in an inning plus, after allowing only one all year, if memory serves.

Jeffress gave up 2 today, his first since May, after allowing only 3 all season. My first thoughts on each?

--Rosenthal must be hurt. He's just falling apart.

--Jeffress just missed his location on a couple pitches. He may be fatigued, but when you throw fastballs down the middle, they usually get hit hard.

Rosenthal's velocity looked fine. He ran into a hot hitter in Davis Friday, and today, kept falling behind and the results showed.

They're in the very best of hands.

The Nats would give them Paps if they paid his salary, I'm sure. One of the problems with allowing a manager to decide on the roster makeup is they never play the "what if" game.

They have a very well paid and effective set up man in Joe Smith, the rest is just mixing and matching the rest of the way. Quit your whining.

The fact Harper was removed from the game and Papelbon allowed to stay in seems...I'm looking for the right word here...like Williams is living about a century behind the times.

I have often said I have little trouble with players getting a bit heated, as it shows they care and and I'd a lot rather have to settle someone down than try to get them to play hard.

That said, when one player physically attacks the star of the franchise, and a guy who is very possibly the best young player in the game since the 1950's...it seems rather apparent who is in the wrong and the correction that needs to take place.

Pena has been good and lucky so far, but I always tire of listening to the "he needs a 3rd pitch" talk. Ben Sheets had a great career, and was dominant at times, and rarely/never used a 3rd pitch. John Axford has had a nice career as a reliever, and while he "does" technically have two different breaking balls, he hardly ever uses both at the same time...if the slider is working, he uses that, if the curve is, he uses that.

Two good pitches are better than two good and one mediocre. He is not likely to go 7-8 innings very often with only two pitches, but he wouldn't with three either.

Heh. That's extremely true.

They called it the 2nd half of the Jim Gaffigan Show, but instead, it was the "sneak preview" of Teachers, which is about a group of young teachers who can't control their own life, never mind their kids. It's a tricky way to get people to DVR a new show, but it's hilarious.

Wagner, now Barrios, have to wonder if Houser will get in tonight. Barrios with every pitch 95+, but most of his K's come from his change up.

I have to wonder if the Pirates had him just throwing his fastball and working on location, as it's hard to imagine only striking out 5 batters per 9 IP throwing that hard.

A year ago, the Brewers ranked 19th in position player depth, and 25th in pitching. Two years ago, it was 23rd and 28th, respectively. Now, they rank 11th overall, and third in minor league starting pitcher talent. Most of their rebuild was conducted via the trades of Gomez, Fiers and Gerardo Parra at this year’s deadline, which yielded them the aforementioned Santana, Phillips, Hader and Houser from the Astros, and pitcher Zach Davies (#77) from the Orioles. Toss in a very strong 2015 draft class, which isn’t yet reflected in the above rankings, and the future is beginning to look a little brighter in Milwaukee.--Fangraphs

Read the whole thing here. These rankings are really stupid, as they miss many players because they are not highly ranked (Gennett, Davis, Jungmann, Blazek are all excellent examples), but it does show how many guys they have in the upper echelon. 3rd in pitching depth is truly astounding. Doug may have truly saved his best work for last, as he added a ton of live arms at AA and AAA at the deadline.

The morons on FS1 did not know how to answer when asked who they felt was in the best shape; Cards, Cubs, or Pirates. seemingly oblivious to the fact SL has a lead, and unless caught, the other two teams have a 50/50 chance to be done after a single game.

Given BP gives them a 94% chance of reaching the division series round, while the other two are less than 60%, the only correct answer, according to math, is SL.

They really aren't "adding layers"...but they are giving all the layers a title, and paying them more. Doug had an assistant, Gord, and several other assistants; Counsell was one, Dan O'Brien was one, and so on.

Then he had a bunch of gjuys in cubicles that ran numbers, compiled data, and other guys in charge of the draft (Seid, and then Montgomery), in charge of the minors (Reid Nichols), in charge of pro scouting (Minasian), etc.

Now, teams have a president, a VP, and a GM...and all the underlings, probably more.

While some have gotten very excited because the pope is visiting the USA, I have read an awful lot of tweets from non Catholics...and a lot of former Catholics, that, paraphrasing, basically say one of two things:

1. He's just a guy.

2. I think the way people are treating the pope is kind of creepy.

This kind of fits in #2.

Like I said, I think this will spark a bit of a very mini renaissance...for example, expect attendance to be up this weekend, moreso in Catholic churches, but in all Christian services, as we've basically seen nonstop marketing for religion this week, disguised as "news." You could not buy this type of advertising. However, given that it will include no follow up, it will fall off quickly.

Know what will linger though? Those who said and thought #1 and #2.

As much as they try to make it sound terrible, with charter flights, it's not even a big deal.

The fact is, the home field advantage in the wildcard game doesn't even exist, though there's only been six games, a tiny sample. And, let's be honest, baseball is not a physically demanding sport. The entire team can be tired and drowsy, if your SP has shutout stuff, your team is probably going to win.

Tommy Pham was a good hitter early in spring training because many pitchers don't start throwing breaking balls until mid March. That, and the small sample involved, is why March baseball is meaningless.

If you're going to overturn that and not overturn Scooter's the other night, you might as well just admit you have umpires fixing the outcome of games.

Whether they are on purpose or not is immaterial, because it could be happening, because they were both safe, but they chose not to overturn one of them, for reasons unknown.

Simply put, from one night to the next...heck, one inning to the next, you have no idea what they are going to do. It seems to be "if it is very obvious, it is changed, but if it is just obvious, it is not.

Whenever the criteria does not involve, you know, actually getting the call right, you're just correcting a fraction of the incorrect calls, in which case, you aren't really accomplishing anything.

Al,

Wow, what a brutal week for all us prognosticators.  Out of 139 experts only 16 had more than half of the games picked correctly.  You tied for 68th for the week with a 6 - 10 record.  For the year you are 15 - 17 and in 109th.  Adam Meyer from FOX Sports leads at 22 - 10.
Toughest games to pick this week look to be San Diego at Minnesota and Buffalo at Miami.
Hope we all have better luck this week.
Jim

As the survivor pools proved, last week was one of the toughest I can recall, as no favorite was big enough.

Years ago, at a place of my employment, there was a woman who was very attractive, but she was in her mid to late 30's, and like many that have had a couple kids (or like myself, that have not) she was a bit "heavy," though I might use the more friendly term "soft." She often wore very tight tops, short skirts, and such...which were not forgiving to those extra pounds.

Often, this would work its way into the conversation, with new people. Many, mostly young women, were critical of her choice of dress. So, the phrase I came up with was "she dresses kind of young for her age."

Leann Rimes is still gorgeous, still quite lean, but at 33, I would say "she might wish to dress a bit older."

Remember, Showalter refused to take over as manager for a few weeks because he wanted them to add some mediocre relievers so he'd have a better chance to not suck so much. As long as you have a manager more concerned with wins and losses than the direction of the organization, you have a bad situation.

JJ Hardy is making huge money and is below replacement level offensively, but is known to be a favorite of Buck. They are a lost ship without a rudder, and most of that falls on a lack of a plan.

Hey, an NFL favorite won!

Jason Rogers now hitting .299, looks better every game, very comfortable at the plate. Looked far better in LF than expected too. He might end up being a utility player, but as a stopgap at 1B, you could do a lot worse.

The strange thing is, so many folks say Perez would be fine as a placeholder at 3B, when, in reality, he did not hit enough to play SS in DET. I just saw someone say today they should let Rivera play 3B the rest of the year...the kid barely managed a 600 OPS in AA/AAA. Corner infield is an offensive position. Putting guys there that. at the moment, profile best as reserve 2B's/SS's...not much of a plan. Herrera is likely the best in house option as of today, and he may not be on the offseason 40.

If Doug was still in charge, I have little doubt he'd put finding average or close to average production at 3B as a top priority. Not sure what we'll see from Stearns. I went over the AAA 3B in the NL the other night, prepping for a post later, and there's not a whole lot there, prospects or minor league vets.

EDIT: And yes, I realize, if Lind, Lucroy, Davis, or any pitchers are dealt, a 3B might well be part of the return, or a decent 3B might be nontendered. I'm just saying since Aramis left, the 3B production has been at least bottom ten, maybe bottom five. While the offense is far from awful (8th in the NL of 15, a single run below NL "average"), if 3B was average, they'd be 5th/6th.

(9/24/2015 09:13:00 PM) - Al

Barrios throws 96-97, very mediocre breaking ball, but a nice change at 86-87. He'll have to be protected on the 40, or he'll be both Rule 5 eligible and a minor league free agent.

Guys that throw that hard would be taken almost right away, and as a FA, would likely garner a bidding war, because velocity likes that rarely is available.

The Pirates were probably convinced to deal him because of those roster restrictions.

(9/24/2015 08:37:00 PM) - Al

Counsell letting Scooter face more LHP of late, though mostly when the game isn't within a run or two.

Development versus performance. You know it's a battle for him.

9/24/2015 08:37:00 PM

(9/24/2015 08:34:00 PM) - Al

This might be a good game to get Barrios (or maybe Houser) in, if the score remains the same.

TV guys talking about Goforth's sub 6 foot stature, and saying that's why he projects as a reliever. Wannabee scouts always get upset when I say the same thing, and of course, there are exceptions, as there are a few 5-10 and 5-11 RHSP's. That said, there ain't many, and the vast majority ends up as relievers. Over the years, folks have insisted Thornburg is a SP, Jeffress is a SP, and so on.

Nothing personal, it's just math. Arguing against math is, at best, a losing battle. And it makes you look dumb. It's like insisting you shouldn't hit on 16 when the dealer has a face card up...every simulation and advice book insists hitting is the proper play, but the last two times I played blackjack at a casino, people said it was a bad move "because you bust so often."

Lucroy given medical clearance to play, will probably platoon at 1B with Lind the rest of the way. Will not catch anymore this season. Rogers in LF tonight, which is probably Craig's way of saying he's probably done at 1B for this season.

Holland is not a very intelligent man, but it does remind you how much pain pitchers deal with all the time, and many just accept it and keep throwing.

It also explains what happened before TJ surgery, guys just accepted it, pitched crappy, and eventually did not pitch anymore.

Adam joins MLBTR for its weekly podcast. You can listen to the whole thing here, but here's a quick recap.

--Counsell has said "embrace the change," most seem to be optimistic and feeling good about the future.

--Curious as to who Stearns surrounds himself with.

--Doug will remain in an advisory role, kind of up to Stearns as to what role that will be.

--Santana has shown great power and has been a passable CF. Wonder if he'll remain there for now, at least until Brett Phillips is ready, as everyone sees him as the CF of the future.

--No 3B in the high minors, the next 3B will probably either be a SS that is moved there or acquired with one of the extra SS's.

--Garza will almost certainly be back, out of financial necessity if nothing else.

If you ever wondered why the Catholic church is shedding members at a phenomenal pace in the USA, look no further.

No one wants to take time out of their weekend to listen to constant negativity. It's just like that guy at the office that is always bringing everyone down...sooner or later, people either distance themselves from him or they join him.

The pope's visit will spark a short term attendance boom and probably a bit of a renaissance, however short lived. However, for those who grew up in the church and have left; or those of us who have always watched from a distance, listening to such gloomy, pessimistic, detrimental talk tends to make one, well, gloomy, pessimistic, and so on.

By the way, I often talk about how church services haven't changed in fifty years, and that's why they are losing people. In this case, it's far more than fifty...it's centuries old. And while some will shake their fist with glee, it is unlikely to attract warm bodies to fill the pews. Also, the idea of accepting an invitation to visit a nation, speak to them...and then inform them they suck...it shows me just how out of touch they are. And I guarantee you, I ain't the only one.

EDIT: And yes, his lack of appreciation for the free market makes me wonder what rock he's been living under. It's mind numbingly ignorant.

(9/23/2015 11:24:00 PM) - Al

Davies has to be mighty fine, but when he is on, he is superb. His size is going to make it tough for him to be a consistent SP, able to go deep into games and put up 175+ innings. However, the kid can pitch. He made the Cubs power packed lineup look pathetic, like a lineup of reserve middle infielders and catchers.

He's such an outlier, it's impossible to predict what exactly he'll become, but his floor is as an effective major league pitcher, since he already is that now at 22. I can see him starting or relieving...it's very easy to imagine him as a guy who comes in and is completely different than the previous RHP, and dominates through the order once.

Time will tell.

Played 3 innings, and we've seen 5 or 6 hits taken away because of massive defensive shifts, including 3-4 up the middle.

Those folks who still "don't get it," which is composed almost solely of former players, just understand math.

Beane and James together for an interview.

If I were a GM, and I would bet many teams have guys doing exactly this, with interns and low level guys, I would have them going through the last 30-40 years and trying to figure out what the "older" players...guys who were 25+ when they made their major league debut and were unheralded prospects...what did they have in common when they were in A ball at young ages? Because while everyone drafts high school and college players, the way teams treat minor league FA's, nontenders, and DFA's varies greatly by organization.

I have long said that there is a single key for pitchers, and that's simply how many strikeouts they have...guys who K 11-12 per 9 IP almost always move up, and those who K 6 or less per 9 IP almost always top out in AA or AAA, even if they have stellar ERA's and other numbers. With hitters, I look at BB/AB, an "old" Moneyball trick, because while BA and BAbip fluctuate, plate discipline is pretty consistent. Also, I look for doubles and triples, because young players' extra base hits often turn into homers as they put on more muscle and develop more pop.

Of course, lots of people do what I do, none of those are secrets. However, if you start putting every player who has "broken out" late on a spreadsheet, other trends will likely emerge; an increasing BB rate, for example, would be easy to miss.

Holt looks like a veteran AAA version of Mike Reed, good speed, good OBP, plays all 3 OF spots.

I know he's 26, but hard to believe the Indians don't think they can use a guy who got on base at a better clip than 90% of everyone at AAA. He'd be a good guy to look at as a minor league FA, assuming he clears waivers, though I believe he's Tribe property until after '16 unless claimed.

EDIT: And yes, I hope Reed amounts to more than a solid reserve like it appears Holt would be. But he may not.

Sometimes, it's tough to keep it all straight...of course, that's what happens when it's all just made up crap.

Tigers seem to be going out of their way to handle this as poorly as they can. Publicly shaming a player returning from Tommy John surgery is, at best, pointless, and all they have accomplished is to destroy his value if they wish to trade him.

Al Avila fails his first test. They have no idea if Rondon's arm is hurting or not, or how his recovery is going. They are just upset and are being embarrassingly shortsighted. If Rondon ends up getting healthy and is back to normal, he may end up making DET a place for all pitchers to avoid, telling anyone that will listen how they ignored his arm pain, forced him to pitch, and so on.

Upside? I can't think of any.

As Chris Rock so eloquently put it, I guarantee you on your judgement day, ain't no one gonna say, "You ate pork? Nope, sorry! If you're lucky enough to have a pork chop on your plate, enjoy."

A quick thought about the public's share of the Bucks' new arena and the fact there were cuts to the UW system, both in the amount of about $250M. I find it difficult to believe that no one ever took the time to explain that one is a one time cost, and the other is an annual cost. It's almost as if many do not want folks to know the truth.

Secondly, the annual operating budget of the UW system is $6B. Cutting $250M is a cut of 4.17%, hardly a painful amount, and a cut an entity of that size should get used to every single year as we look to reduce our bloated government spending and let those who earned the money keep it, rather than redistribute it in some sort of "Robin Hood" ponzi scheme.

This may be the most racist and offensive article I've seen online in a decade. They manage to put down veteran baseball execs, young GM's, Ivy Leaguers, non Ivy Leaguers, teams only paying market value for draft picks, teams cutting major league payroll  when not competitive and instead investing in scouting, development, and analytics; and treats many opinions as facts. Just a despicable piece on so many levels, by far the worst of which, is the assumption that blacks are going to be left behind.

As long as the focus in on the color of a person's skin instead of qualifications, you can pretty much count on very stupid things to be said. This is no exception. I especially wonder about the fact only 1 of 30 (3.3%) of GM's are black, in a country where 13% of its residents are black; somehow does not make mathematical sense.

Per Survivor Grid.com, 83.1% lost this past week...or 89% if the Colts did not win last night (can you tell I'm scheduling this?) as they were favored to do.

(9/21/2015 11:01:00 PM) - Al

Sources reporting up to six Shuckers are on their way up, will join team tomorrow. With three 40 man spots open, would need to clear at least three spots, either by DFAing, outrighting, or moving players to the 60 day DL...Garza, Nelson obvious choices, Lucroy, Herrera also possible.

If it is six, Arcia, Wagner, Lopez, Reed, and Barrios, all guys that have to be added to the 40 to avoid the Rule 5 draft, would be all but sure things, if healthy. The 6th? My guess would be Magnifico or Houser.

EDIT: Reed has confirmed his promotion on social media, per Adam. Yadiel Rivera and Jorge Lopez have told teammates they are headed up to MIL. Also, Arcia has told family he is NOT, again, per Twitter. I just mentioned Rivera a few days ago and forgot him tonight. He plays all three infield spots and was already on the 40, so he may be profiting from Elian being out. Mike likely being rewarded due to Ryan's injury.

EDIT 2: Barrios, Wagner, and Houser are also on their way, per sources. Lopez, Wagner and Houser will not be available tomorrow night, having pitched recently. At least one of the SP's likely brought up to replace Nelson.

Again, this is a 5-10 second overrule. That one angle is obvious.

You gotta be kidding me. That is another case of umpires lying that they could not tell to protect their inept buddies. Should be fired on the spot, but instead, they have jobs for life, unless they get tired of making six figures to work a couple months a year.

Absolutely, the worst anyone could ever imagine. Pathetic, and a complete embarrassment. That was every bit as clear as the earlier call at 2B. It's union wink, wink, protecting the very worst of the worst.

As the TV guys just said, Jorge Lopez pitching tonight (only 61 pitches) gives him plenty of time if they want him to start Sunday, next time Nelson's pot comes up...or Tyler Wagner could go also, as he pitched over the weekend.

Worst place in the US? Northern MN is cold, but it's also God's country, beautiful, picturesque.

And, hot in the summer? It's 20 degrees cooler, at all times, than anywhere south of the IL border. That's just ignorant.

The past few weeks have been Logan Schafer's coming out party. Stellar defense and some nice PA's will make him a target of several teams longing for a CF if he's removed from the 40 man. He's not Gomez in his prime good, but he's the 2nd best I've ever seen, and his metrics indicate that as well.

That was a five second review that took them two minutes. Completely inept on the original call and the length of replay. Untrained monkeys could do better.

The Crew still has an eight man bullpen, if you count Cravy as a SP for now. I assume one or two more arms will be joining the Crew when Biloxi's season of infinite length finally ends, one being Tyler Wagner, who started a game earlier this season before being sent back to AA as the Brewers maximized their 25 man roster due to other injuries. I thought Barrios might get a look, as he has to be added to the 40 and has not pitched much, as he spent seasons miscast as an infielder.

They are down to five OF's without Braun; Davis/Schafer/Santana/Peterson/Rogers, and, no one will argue Jason is far from fleet of foot, and not an OF by trade. Sardinas has played out there a tiny amount, as has Scooter. Of course, Herrera can play anywhere, but his status is "out" until we hear differently.

An OF that will have to be added to the 40 man this offseason, Mike Reed, would be a nice fit as a bench piece the last couple weeks, able to play all 3 spots and a nice OBP guy, often described as a speedier version of Brady Clark. He might well platoon with Brett Phillips and be the 4th OF in a couple seasons, unless he overachieves and works his way into more than that.

EDIT: The Crew's recently claimed OF Daniel Fields, who is on the 40 now and can also play all three spots. Not sure if there is any consequence to adding Reed early other than a couple weeks of service time or not.

Cravy/Arietta might be one of the most lopsided betting lines in MLB history. A huge favorite in baseball is like a -300 line...we might see even higher than that.

{That's betting $300 to win $100, or $400 if you actually have to exchange money before the game, like at a legal sportsbook.}

EDIT: Anywhere from -300 to as high as -360.

Walker dropped out early from 2006 GOP Wis gov primary - a move that endeared him to the faithful and helped pave way for later rise.--Ryan Foley

Reagan lost to Gerald Ford in 1976, a fact history rarely mentions and seems almost impossible, given Ford's reputation as a bit inept, but a nice guy; and Reagan's place in history as a great leader and conservative icon. If a GOP nominee wins, Walker might well be tapped in a role of some sort, and if they do not, 2020 is wide open.

One of the first decision Stearns will have to make is to put together a 40 man roster, of which the Crew likely has 45 legitimate candidates. One, Ariel Pena, would have been laughable 3-4 months ago, as he had a 5ish ERA in AAA at the time. Since then, he's been very effective as a SP in AAA, plenty passable for the majors, and once again, proven that you have to pretty much ignore Colorado Springs ERA's and use K/9, velocity, and other measures to best gauge what the organization has there.

Last season, Pena was dropped from the 40 man and signed to a minor league deal, but that scenario seems unlikely to repeat itself...as he would almost certainly be claimed if they attempted to outright him, and if not, he'd be a very sought after, worthy of a big bonus min or league FA.

Walker to drop out of prez race, presser called at 5. Especially surprising since he was campaigning in Iowa all weekend, and still polled strong in IA, though not elsewhere. We will see what he gives for a reason, and if he throws his support to anyone (probably not yet, but stranger things have happened), but as with Perry, they have proven records, but simply never caught on.

It's always a combo of money, campaigning sucks, and the realization your message is not going to win it for you. My guess is, he saw Fiornia make a huge jump in the polls basically saying almost exactly what he's been trying to say.

ADDED: Reason echoes my thoughts about Perry and Walker, noting both have excellent results at the state level. One has to wonder if that means anything, or if it is more about one liners and the like. As I said, Obama has basically made your past inexperience unimportant, but you'd think past experience would still be favorable.

PRESSER RECAP
--Stearns is engaged to a young lady named Whitney, per MA. She's a Houstonian, but she's moving now.

--lots of talk about his age, but interview talked about his experience, worked for MLB and many teams.

--Stearns looks younger than even 30. Could easily be a college student.

--Really enjoyed interview process, very comprehensive.

--Organization wants to win, wants to win and sustain their winning, just like him.

--Both MA and David said they will answer any and all questions.

--Asked about reset or rebuild length. No limits on when team can win.

--Was involved in Gomez/Fiers trade, likes that many of Astros' top prospects will join him in Milwaukee.

--MA says they had 44 names on the list, some with no baseball history, knocked down to a handful, then interviewed them in person, for several hours. Gave us plenty of time to get to know them. Thinks David and Craig will work great together. Moved a little quicker because several teams are looking.

--Interviewed with COO Schlesinger, board member Eric Siegel, and an exec from Korn Ferry, then an hour with MA.

--Has the vision, intelligence, and strategic mindset to build an alignment needed for consistent postseason play.--Mark A's criteria

--Stearns feels his best assets are having worked for many different people...similar to what Counsell said, by the way. Wide variety of skillsets.

--Acquire, develop, and keep controllable young talent, quality major league talent. That's what winners do, regardless of market size. Keep talent flowing through pipeline. A couple teams have shown they can do that.--Stearns

--Counsell is an impressive guy, met with Craig last night, think the relationship will be great. Doug has been a GM for 13 years here and 20 total. Will use his knowledge, lean on him. Already helped him get acclimated, meet people. No word yet on Doug's new title.

--Want to be industry leaders, be the best at scouting, using analytical info, and develop best practices on how to do that successfully.

--MA says baseball execs are under contract through the end of the year, up to David as to who he wants to keep or bring in.

--Team does have young talent, both in majors and in high levels of minors. Makes it more attractive.

--Very challenging losing 100+ games several seasons in a row. They decided that was the best strategy. This is a different city, organization, situation. Will be a different strategy.

--Stearns a Poli Sci major (just like me).

--146 people in baseball ops, will formulate a plan after he talks to as many of those people as he can. One step at a time.

--MA says biggest decision he has made since Doug told him about the possibility of trading for Zach Greinke.

--Mentions what a good job Ray Montgomery did with this past draft, or that they think he did.

--Billy Beane has been most innovative GM for quite some time, always open to new ideas and change.--MA

--Stearns already saying he looks to win consistently. Basically, the same line MA and Doug have used for the last decade. He learns fast.

--No mention of length of Stearns' contract. If for 4-5 years, as most are, I might expect to see Counsell extended to match time frame.

--Stearns and Ryan Braun have a resemblance, no doubt. DS is like a taller, thinner version of Braun.

It's been a while since I've asked, but if you use an ad blocker, I certainly understand why. I do too, on my main browser, at least. However, I do not receive any money from Blogger (now Google, really) unless the ads show up. They do not interfere with the text, and they never advertise any "adult" sites.

So, dear readers, if it's not too much to ask, "allow ads" on this web page...usually, you just have to click on your ad blocker and say you wish to do so on this site (or, if you're like me, ask your 13 year old son). It does not make a huge difference, but by my calculations, I get credit for about 1 of 3 hits. This is especially true if you visit often.

Appreciate it, thanks.

Stearns might as well be a Supreme Court justice...I find next to nothing online about his beliefs, strategies, feelings, and so on...though this makes perfect sense since he has always worked for someone else, and his decisions were recommendations.

Time will tell, but I could easily see him being a Dean Taylor type, depends on others for scouting and analytical info, though I'm sure he would set the parameters.

(9/20/2015 05:25:00 PM) - Al

Rosenthal reports Stearns is Brewers' choice. No word on if an official offer has been made, if he has accepted, or so on.

He has worked for CLE and HOU, who are both known for being very stat heavy organizations. CLE has had to deal with sparse attendance and declining revenues, and even this season, HOU hasn't drawn squat, well behind the MIL, for example. To expect a guy like Cherington to come from the Red Sox to a small market Brewers' club...kind of like a lifelong bachelor marrying a widow with six kids...tough adjustment.

He certainly would not have been my choice, though we have no idea if Dipoto or DePodesta were interviewed or interested, as both have worked mostly on the coasts...Dipoto is said to be the favorite in SEA, and many think Depo will take over for Alderson in Queens. And, of course, I did not have the luxury of interviewing any candidates.

I would expect him to keep many of the Brewers' front office personnel, and quite possibly promote several (Ray Montgomery and Zack Minasian have both been mentioned as possible internal candidates), as well as probably bring in his own friends and former peers. I would say he is also likely to hire a "veteran" (yes, I mean old) former GM or high ranking management to be "special assistants," to use as sounding boards, along with Doug, whose actual amount of involvement is as of yet unknown.

9/20/2015 05:25:00 PM

(9/20/2015 04:40:00 PM) - Al

When I saw the Brewers' lineup, I said, "probably score a dozen."

Story on Stearns, who sounds like a young, smart guy, with a lot of focus on analytics, just like MA said he wanted.

9/20/2015 04:31:00 PM

(9/20/2015 04:21:00 PM) - Al

Heh. This is about the 7th "leading" or "strong" candidate for the Brewers' position...all said to have had excellent interviews and the like.

I don't think they know, as MA is not talking, and the interviewees are all saying things went well.

They all look good to me, though I would rank the Pirates' guy the lowest, as he has never even been an  assistant GM. Of course, he may be the best guy, and just be a year or two "early."

9/20/2015 04:21:00 PM

(9/20/2015 04:14:00 PM) - Al

Pretty much had my fill of Biloxi updates. Even on that prospect laden team, less than half the team is anything but guys with a future, far from actual prospects.

I don't mind reporting the score, but the constant mentions and you know, acting as if it actually matters?

Not so much.

9/20/2015 04:14:00 PM

(9/20/2015 02:09:00 PM) - Al

100% yes.

Need to cut all of them, and do a full review of military spending, as while I would not cut it, I would move more to anti terror (for my lefty readers, anti workplace violence) measures, such as special forces, intelligence, and so on.

As Chris Christie said a few years ago, first thing is to raise the retirement age, maybe a year for those retiring in 2018, two for 2019-2020, and so on. As Christie pointed out, lightning did not strike when he said it, nor did the heavens open. Raise the Medicare deductibles and add a copay for office visits, as retirees commonly go to the doc for many things that can easily be treated OTC. Eliminate punitive damages in medical malpractice, which will eliminate 75% of lawsuits overnight, as most are simply get rich quick schemes and/or "let's see if they'll pay us to go away" extortion attempts. Cut office staff 10% every year for five years, and I doubt anyone would notice. Freeze government salaries, and begin to eliminate benefits...if they quit, that's a shame. Privatize the post office and pay Fed Ex or UPS $10M a day to take it over...I just saved $21B every year, and even more when you figure in future pensions and benefit increases.

Two thoughts here:

---You know when they say "as diverse as a Bernie Sanders rally?" Blacks seem to be avoiding this socialist clown far more than whites, who seem to have thrown away any pretense of pride and want nothing more than to sit home, confiscate money from the successful, and "live the good life" socialism inevitably leads to...you know, the Cubans and Soviets were famous for living in the lap of luxury, steak and lobster every meal.

---I agree he's unelectable, but the fact is, this unelectable sideshow is still a more popular choice with many than Hillary Clinton. Think about that a few minutes.

All hustled, all went all out after the ball. Good to see, many players do not do that in games that really matter.

(9/19/2015 09:20:00 PM) - Al

Gotta feel for Elian, playing every day and getting a chance to show scouts what he can do for the future. As Mat Gamel showed, some guys never come back from those somewhat "routine" injuries we see all the time.

They were probably going to bring up 2-3 Biloxi players, and there's 3 40 man spots open. Matt Clark, Yadiel Rivera, Daniel Fields and Juan Centeno are the only position players on the 40 man not up, though it would appear Herrera is done for the season, and could go on the 60 day DL if they need to create another spot.

(9/19/2015 09:11:00 PM) - Al

The Reds are living right this inning, a pair of pop ups that fall in no man's land. Herrera and Peterson might both have suffered severe injuries, though Shane is now up and walking. Elian might well have just lost his 40 man spot for the offseason.

Heck, lucky they did not lose Segura too.

Must just eat Counsell up inside not "managing to win," every game, but, since Knebel and Thornburg both pitched last night, Cravy gets the call in the 8th. If they were fighting for a playoff spot, it'd probably be Cory in.

Craig looked as if he was unhappy he did not double switch when he brought Jeffress in, but he would have had to weaken his defense to do so, something you hate to do with the lead.

9/19/2015 09:03:00 PM

(9/19/2015 07:22:00 PM) - Al

Reid Nichols explaining how they "forced" Jungmann to throw his curveball to help it get better.

That's the main reason wins and losses are meaningless in the minors...if you want to win games, just move everyone down a level and you'll win 60% of them, and it won't help get anyone ready for the bigs. If you'll ever take a look, the same teams win almost every year in the minors, and they don't have anymore prospects, they just sign more filler and play organizational soldiers down a level.

Personally, I don't care if the minor league clubs win a game...heck, they can't get a worse AAA place to play (though Doug did say they preferred Colorado Springs to Albuquerque and maybe one other possible destination, so maybe it ranks 28th in their mind), just keep sending up a handful of youngsters annually.

Don't forget, they were in the bottom 5, sent Nelson, Gennett and Davis up, remained in the bottom 5 (well hell, they lost 3 solid players the rankings ignored!), and this year have graduated Jungmann, Goforth, Cravy, Knebel, Pena, Thornburg, Rogers, Sardinas, and Santana...so they no longer count, but with the traded for kids, they'll probably be in the 8-12 range.

If you're thinking, "Geez, what a frickin' crock," you are 100% accurate. Minor league gurus are the climate scientists of sports...their data is all made up and manufactured, and they are a complete joke. In reality, the system now rated about 10th will be lucky to graduate 12 players like they did the past two seasons when they were rated 26-30th.

But don't worry...they are geniuses, beyond reproach. And yes, these are the same clowns Moneyball made fun of for saying "his girlfriend is ugly" and "his butt is too big."

Love Amazon and their ideas. I already have a tablet I never use (it's the Rambling wife's old one), which I refer to as my "alarm clock," mostly just to annoy the Rambling son.

Note the packaging for the "six pack," looks like beer with a built in handle. I can see many people buying that and giving them to their kids, parents, grandparents, and so on...technoapathetic, or too young to risk a high priced model. Let's face it, to many, $250 is like me buying a $4.99 value meal.

The irony here is, the people calling Carly a "liar" are the same ones that insist what they are doing, tearing apart a small child and then selling the pieces as if it's an old car you are "parting out," is fine, yet Carly's a bad gal.

Remember, I'm pro choice, up until the child can likely survive outside the womb, which in my estimation is about six months, though the twenty week legislation is plenty close enough for me to support. As technology continues to evolve, that magic number will change.

Montreal is still under the illusion they weren't an embarrassing baseball city with a embarrassingly bad and outdated ballpark.

They are by no means any type of contender for a team until they build a major league ready stadium. Olympic is old and was not built for baseball.

We live in a world in which the Avengers and Jurassic World sequels are now top ten all time domestic box office, and the old media continues to insist they're all crap, and all the "good" movies are period pieces only shown in Toronto.

And then, they blame their demise on how damn stupid the public is.

Yesterday afternoon, I went to Wal Mart for groceries, as we had made our menu plans for the weekend last night. At one point, I passed another fella and as I changed aisles, a woman looked in my direction (I'm used to this, of course) and said, "Hi Bob!"

I figured she must be talking to the guy I just went by, but I glanced at her and she was smiling at me. Then, she looked a bit unsure and said, "Bob?" I told her my dad was Bob, but I was not. She said I looked just like her friend whose name was Bob, so my reply was "Well, he must be a good looking guy,"

And she laughed and laughed...which now, come to think of it, was kind of hurtful.

Young A's exec Dan Kantrovitz is seen by many as a favorite for the Brewers GM job. He's a "very strong" candidate, is the way one person put it. Kantrovitz, like Brewers owner Mark Attanasio, went to Brown, as Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com pointed out, and it doesn't hurt he also went to Harvard, where Attanasio's wife Debbie went. Attanasio is also close to A's owner Lew Wolff, a Los Angeles neighbor. Kantrovitz is an analytics expert, which fits what Attanasio seeks. Some other prospective names, even ones with a numbers bent, have been deemed "not analytical enough."--Heyman

That's a pretty weak correlation, even for Heyman, whose only real talent is his ability to speak while Scott Boras' lips move. That said, Kantrovitz is one of the names that keep popping up, over and over, along with Hazen and Dipoto.

If Nelson cannot start TUES, I assume it would either be Lohse or a pitcher coming up from Biloxi...Jorge Lopez or Tyler Wagner.

Orlando Arcia and Yhonathan Barrios are the two others I think would be considered to be added from AA...Barrios performed admirably after coming over from PIT for Ramirez, and will have to be added to the 40 man, or he will be a minor league free agent (never mind also eligible for the Rule 5 draft); as he spent his first few minor league campaigns miscast as an infielder.

Schafer and Gomez might have caught that ball, but I never expected Santana to do so, even if he is 6-5.

I have little doubt he's a below average CF overall, but given the situation in '16 looks to be a "reset" of sorts, I have no problem letting him play there most of the time.

I might be the only one, but I'd have no trouble trading Lind this offseason and just letting Rogers play 1B in '16, maybe pairing him with a veteran 1B who hits LH in some type of "soft platoon," a guy like Matt Clark, or even Shane Peterson, a utility piece who hopefully can either play 3B or OF too.

If you ever looked around AAA, there are about a dozen 1B who have either never made the majors or have less than 50 PA's, but have had great success in AAA, near .400/.500 type numbers. Look around for a younger, more versatile version and sign them to a minor league deal and see what they got.

Perez, Peterson and Herrera have done a fine job of proving my point, that any successful AAA player can easily transform into a major league bench guy if only given the opportunity. Often, the difference is only being a higher draft pick, or a minor physical skill, such as being a step slow or in the case of a 1B, 2-3 inches taller.

2015 Brewers attendance per game--31296
2015 Pirates attendance per game----30705

A while back, I set the over under on Brewers' attendance for the season at 2.52M (basically saying I thought it would end up at 2.52M). I think they should put pillows and stuffed animals around 2B...maybe some pretty flowers too.

2B's and SS's have multiple ways to protect themselves when trying to turn the double play, but they often forego said protection and try and simply throw the ball as quickly as they can and then jump or move out of the way.

They've tried to remove catchers blocking the plate, and we have been left with two years of no one liking it or knowing what the actual rules were...left in the hands of lazy, low skilled arbiters who have been proven to miss more than half of all close calls, damn the laws of mathematics.

The irony is, it was designed to be a crapshoot. And it is. It's supposed to reward the division winner and it does. It also creates drama, as one game playoffs are naturally exciting, as to be blunt, a 2 of 3 wildcard playoff would have little interest to many fans, including myself.

I do think it would be interesting if the team with the best record had to decide if they wanted to play the wildcard playoff winner or the division winner with the worst record, but they would have to decide this before the wildcard playoff game is played. For the sake of the wildcard winner and the division winner having to travel, the evening of the regular season finale would make sense.

Surprised it took all those hits for the Crew to figure out Pham is helpless versus breaking balls. Dead red is usually pretty easy to spot and mentioned on scouting reports. It was also "about 15%" five decades ago, before the "war on poverty" began. It's almost as if some people will always manage to be in a poor financial situation. Thank goodness they have the left to insist no one is hopeless, and that "just a little more" will solve all problems, and utopia is just one more tax increase away.

What's changed you ask? We now spend a kijillion dollars "fighting" a condition that man has lived in since the beginning of time. Some insist they can "defeat poverty" by giving money to those stricken. So, after fifty years and an estimated $15-20 trillion, yes, with a T, what does the left insist we need to do?

Spend more! Double down.

The answer always remains the same...in order to solve a problem, the government needs more money and more power. The question is inconsequential. Of course, there's no way of confiscating money from the poor...they don't have any. Hence, onto the successful. Then, when they run out, it's onto the mediocre, like me. And yes, they always run out.

More on the school treating a gifted young engineer like a terrorist...schools are run by and for the mediocre.

As Glenn points out, the US education system is broken, public schools are a bunch of union protected flunkies and college is funded almost solely by taxpayers. The Rambling son twiddled his thumbs for years as they told us he "seems bored" and "doesn't pay attention," blaming it on fictional medical problems, when in reality, his teachers were dumpster fires who gave up on multiplication tables because it was "too stressful" for the kids.

They spent the entire final two months of classes going on field trips, watching movies, and taking sick days, often just working Tues-Thur, when a sub would come in and not even pretend to have a plan to work from.  Movie, reading time, lunch, recess, special class (phy ed, art, music), and then "physical activity" to finish the day, which looked a lot like another recess.

Spent a couple hours this afternoon looking for cheaper auto and home insurance, per the Rambling wife, who says we're "getting robbed." Talk about a racket. Our current company just keeps treating us like the government, raises the premium every year because I guess, they figure they can. My current agent tried to explain to me that while the value of our home is constant the "rebuild" price goes up every year, due to inflation, construction costs, and, I assume, to make more money. Right now, our home is listed as a value of $125K, and a "rebuild" of $194K, which, he admitted, is a bit high.

Ya think?

So far, every company comes in at $400 less for six months for auto and about $150-400 less for a year of homeowners. Needless to say, you gotta check every couple years, or they just raise your bill, giggle, and laugh all the way to the bank. They have every right to do this, of course, and unless you check every once in a while, you are probably paying way, way too much.

Consider it a public service.

After this season, Ryan Braun has 5y/$100M guaranteed money remaining on his contract, along with a $15M option for 2021. So, let's pretend for a moment he never would have signed that extension...what would he get on the FA market?

Would he get more? I have to imagine so, as oodles of TV money has come into the game since then. He would be the best corner OF on the market. One could argue Jason Heyward, due to his youth and superior defense, but .348/.435, a 783 OPS simply does not compare.

Alex Gordon, about the same age as Ryan, is a plus defensive player, .355/.440, 795 OPS is similar to Heyward, and recently, MLBTR estimated his FA haul would be about 5y/$95M, remarkably close to what Braun is signed for.

Braun, since 2012, including his "poor" 2014, when he struggled with a bad thumb, has a .362/.519 line, an 881 OPS.

Last year, Nelson Cruz got 4y/$57M, and he had a .323/.500 line the previous four years. Cruz is pretty much a DH at this stage, and had just completed his season of 33, an 823 OPS.

Hanley Ramirez got 4y/$88M, and was signed to play LF, though that experiment has failed badly, and he will move to 1B. He had a .354/.461 line the previous four years, an 815 OPS.

I think Ryan would sign a deal worth about $25-27M per. Given he could play LF/RF and almost certainly 1B, and is an elusive RH power bat, he would have a fit on any team that could afford him, so he'd have plenty of suitors. Because he'll be 32, some clubs might "only" go 3 or 4 years, but the truth remains...barring an injury in the final weeks of the 2015 campaign, the extension he signed eons ago still contains a huge discount.
