I was going to say the Brewers have the #1 waiver priority in the NL, because after 5/1 they use this year's record, but ATL is worse and SD is tied, so MIL is 3rd.

(4/30/2016 08:19:00 PM) - Al

Brewers star left fielder Ryan Braun can veto a trade to all teams except the Dodgers, Angels, Marlins, Rays and Nationals, but the idea of rebuilding Milwaukee dealing him “is becoming more realistic,” FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports (video link). Braun, 32, will have four years and $76MM left on his contract after this season, and Rosenthal believes he’d make plenty of sense as a complement to Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun in the Angels’ outfield. However, the Angels’ dearth of quality prospects and a potential reluctance on owner Arte Moreno’s part to acquire Braun, given his contract and past suspension for PEDs, are factors that could stand in the way of a trade, Rosenthal adds.--MLBTR

I don't think Braun will go anywhere, at least until possibly the last year of his deal. He signed a contract with a no trade clause for a reason, and it's tough to get value for a player with a tight no trade.

Anti-Trump protesters waving Mexican flags and burning American ones don't exactly gather people to their cause.--Eric H

This is the type of thing that does not play in the heartland at all, and loses votes for the Dems.

Why do you think the vandalism and bad language in Madison led to Walker being more popular? For people who work long hours, coming home and turning on the TV and seeing the unemployed (or in the teachers' case, people with better benefits and getting them from the taxpayer) behave badly does not make them warm and fuzzy to their "cause."

Trump is the only one who calls out bad behavior for what it is. Remember when Sanders' voters disrupted his events? The old media blamed Trump. The public blamed Sanders, and Trump's poll numbers went several points higher.

Mattingly said there's no way he was going to let pitcher go 130 pitches this early in the season.

I said to myself I would not let him go higher than 115-120. I think he made 116. Too many, but no way you can get 5 outs with 0 pitches.

Adam reports Counsell says next Tuesday's SP will be brought up from the minors, so I guess it will not be Capuano, who would have been my top guess.

Guerra, Cravy, Houser, and Lopez are all on the 40 and would be options. Who knows, if Davies pitches poorly, they might bring up two.

4/29/2016 05:59:00 PM

(4/29/2016 02:27:00 PM) - Al

As I wondered, Jungmann sent to AAA.

SP will be needed on Tuesday, might be another move in the meantime.

Goforth brought back, so either another pitcher will be brought up to start next week or Capuano could get the nod.

4/29/2016 02:27:00 PM

(4/29/2016 01:55:00 PM) - Al

Jungmann is very likely on the brink of being demoted, and with good reason...he has been awful this year, and his results since last September...and as usually is the case, they can be directly traced to his K's, BB's, and HR's, and the ratios of each, so it is not a "bad luck" issue.

One thing that I noticed, he did pitch better yesterday after a visit from Johnson, and he threw far more curveballs. He allowed baserunners, but with Capuano's help, did not allow any runs. That's his best pitch, and the fact is, it played a huge part in his success and recent downfall.

When a pitcher is struggling, you can almost always look back to a couple bad pitches in key situations. Even yesterday, if Hill is able to catch a foul pop up he missed by a couple inches, Jungmann gives up 3 runs in 3.2 innings...not a good outing, but you are "in the game" when he leaves.

He can certainly be "fixed," though he pitched far better in MIL than he did at altitude in Colorado Springs, which, not coincidentally, is very tough on guys that depend on their breaking ball as their "out" pitch. Should he go to the minors to work things out? He must be very close now, and it's hard to debate he should not...he has a 1-1 K/BB ratio and 5.7 K/9 ratio...very difficult to have success with numbers like that.

Finally, not least important, Junior Guerra is pitching the best of anyone at AAA, and even away from home, he has a 4 ERA. Stearns has chosen not to stock AAA with any journeymen type veterans, which probably makes sense considering their place in the success cycle. Right now, if he were to go down, Tyler Cravy would likely come up and only be able to go 3-4 innings.

Driver was African-American, PG county, native-born. Voted for Obama twice.

But this time, he was voting Trump, because only Trump would fix "all these problems."--David Frum

This is why Trump does so poorly in caucus states, and also why so many Dems are terrified. He has crossover appeal, and much of that appeal is to the lower and middle class, and those who often vote Dem or simply usually skip voting.

Most of the "pundits" are highly educated. Most are sophisticated, upper class individuals. They look down on truck stops, NASCAR, pro wrestling, state fairs, and other "redneck" gatherings. For whatever reason (I assume much of it is that same "lack of presidential grace" many view as a negative), despite being wealthy, white, and well educated, those are Trump's people.

The irony is, for a 3rd party to be successful, a perfect candidate would be a well known moderate...a lot like Donald Trump.

Gary Johnson and the Libertarians "could" have success if they can find a big money supporter, like a Soros or the Kochs. I first talked about this about a month ago, and we've heard nothing from them...that's a really bad sign.

Gennett goes on the DL, Hernan Perez up to replace him.

Garza moved to 60 day DL to create a 40 man spot. Hernan will have to clear waivers if he is sent down again.

Perez had a 848 OPS in AAA, and a 1030 OPS versus LHP, though in a tiny sample this year.

No idea how Counsell intends to utilize 2B, but I would look for a situation like CF, where he alternates, plays hot hands and matchups, until someone "steps forward" to claim the spot. By then, hopefully, Scooter will be back. I like Perez for what he is, a solid utility guy who hits far better than most think, for a guy who plays plus defense at 3 spots. I'm sure the club hopes Rivera continues to hit as he has since the AFL last fall, though much of that seems BAbip driven.

If the Crew does play, Scooter will not, he's back in MIL being evaluated.

It'd be almost a lottery if he were to go on the DL, as the Crew has several players (Hill, Walsh, Villar, Rivera) plenty capable of playing 2B, and the only infielders on the 40 man are Arcia, Cecchini, and Andy Wilkins; and one could argue for or against any of those, as well as several OF's and pitchers.

Two hilarious things about this:

1. The "other" group is too stupid to even get a free permit.

2. If the "other" group would have a successful lunch, say a one minute spiel about their beliefs and then feed a bunch of students...would anyone protest? I certainly wouldn't, and I cannot imagine anyone else doing so either...because those folks have every right to do that.

The difference, of course, is that some folks only want what they believe to be discussed. I am not afraid of any other beliefs. Even the most despicable vile language is as protected by the Constitution as the most eloquent public speaking.

Despite Donald Trump’s encouragement to Sanders in the last couple days to run as a third-party candidate, the Vermont senator ultimately will throw his support behind Clinton in exchange for some conciliatory words on her part. The Democrats have party discipline and aren’t going to risk a schism on the left like the one in 2000 when Ralph Nader cost Al Gore the election. It’s a lesson anti-Trump Republicans should heed – unless, of course, they aren’t interested in winning.--Rasmussen Reports

Bingo. It's twofold:

1. #NeverTrump is the brain child of Clinton supporters.

2. Many on the right quickly joined, mostly for publicity, and some because they were too ignorant to realize they were being used.

To me, this is simple. Trump is a flawed candidate, but so is any human. Jesus Christ ain't on the ballot, and if he were, he'd tell us all to go to hell, he's got better things to do.

I love my country far too much to subject it to 4 years of Hillary after 8 years of goodness, history would refer it as "the selfish dozen," when decisions were made based solely on fictional glory filled tales of one's know, just imagine someone standing in front of styrofoam columns as the rubes bowed and chanted his name.

As if that could ever happen.

4/27/2016 02:03:00 PM

(4/27/2016 01:30:00 PM) - Al

The thing about last night is this...the old media, and even many of the pundits, act as if elections are a coin toss, or perhaps better suited for this site, a baseball game of evenly matched clubs. They act as if the outcome is dependent on a pop up lost in the sun or a double play ball ruined by the ball hitting the lip of the grass.

Election results are almost always known before the polling places open...this year, they have hit all but one correctly, and that one was not "wrong" as it was poorly thought out, as it severly underestimated the amount of young people that vote. Therefore, the poll was correct, but they talked to far too many people my age, and even moreso, the 65+ folks. This is probably directly related to the overuse of landlines in election polling, a simple issue the poll takers can't seem to solve.

Trump is in no better shape after last night than he was before...we all knew he was going to win, and win easily, in the mostly moderate NE USA. We have known for weeks Cruz could not go into the convention with a majority of the delegates. It is also nearly impossible, and certainly extremely improbable, that Trump gets the majority. However, he will also have the most delegates going in. His strategy now is simple...get everyone to admit he's probably the nominee. The more it is said, the more it becomes accepted.

For weeks, months even, Meghan McCain said she supported "anyone but Trump." Of course, Trump had criticized her father, and despite her dad stating that "he would support the Republican nominee," she held out. So, time passes. It becomes more likely Trump is the nominee. She, along with many others who would prefer Trump not be the nominee, are forced to admit a vote for a 3rd party, as of now at least, is a vote for the presumptive Dem nominee, Hillary Clinton.

{I do not say presumptive because may lose to Sanders, as I can do math. I say presumptive because she is under FBI investigation and is in such poor health the old media cannot even keep it under wraps.}

The last time I heard Ms. McCain, when she was on Outnumbered last week, she said she was unsure, saying her family would need an apology from Trump for her to consider a Trump vote. Considering how silly that statement Trump made was, there's no doubt an apology will be made, very possible with Senator McCain at his side on the podium in front of the gullible old media. Trump will say, "Yeah, you know how I am, I get going, I say dumb things." And those that love him will go, "Yeah, that Donald," and like him more.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...those who underestimate the appeal of Trump just continue to get it wrong. I was there too, very early, but I quickly saw the writing on the wall, the excitement of his supporters (many of which are either people that usually do not vote, independents, and moderate "common sense" Dems), and the fact that those who dislike him also seem to be terrified of him. He speaks to the anger, apathy, and disgust many feel, those that work hard; and have seen nothing from eight years of Obama other than higher taxes, more free rides for others, and an administration not even pretending they do not like the police, the military, and the American way.

What was it a little while ago? Trump can't get over 30% 35% 40% so therefore he cannot win. Trump is only winning because there are so many six five four people running. They attacked Carson, a brilliant man who is a godsend to the party...and were 100% wrong. Bush, because his last name was Bush. Christie, because his voters often had Trump as a 2nd choice (I never said they were intelligent complaints). And finally, the one you still hear, Trump cannot beat Hillary. They're right to a point, Trump never does as well as other candidates in head to head polls. Considering Trump has been likened to Hitler (or worse), that's not surprising. A generic Republican, one the public knows next to nothing about, does better. However, last I checked, there ain't no one named Generic Republican on the ballot, and Trump just keeps winning...and, oh by the way, with well over that supposed ceiling of 35-40%.

I've talked about Trump winning several times, as well as a 3rd party (I've mentioned the Libertarians often) actually, in theory at least, having a greater than zero chance of victory for the first time in my lifetime. And both are true.

They will still be writing books about the 2016 election fifty years from now. Don't let yourself get too close to not see the whole picture.

Heard a lot the last couple days about teams playing 4 OF's, mostly with the Rockies and Coors Field.

One would have to wonder about the sanity of that being the best defensive alignment for 95% of players...however, for Chris Davis, and maybe a Bryce Harper and a few other fly ball prone sluggers, it might make sense.

The thing that keeps running through my mind is how stupid I guarantee you all old time football coaches thought 5, 6, and 7 man defensive backfields were. Now...they actually play 5+ DB's more than they play 4.

The odd thing to me is, teams have never tested this out in the minors, as they have so little data available, and certainly have no advance scouting.

I was just thinking a couple days ago, back when I played slow pitch softball, this would have been either the late 80's or early 90's, the other team had a guy hit HR's to LF/LCF twice. This was on a field with fields back to back, no fences. They were not deep fly balls, rather absolute rocket line drives, they hit the wet grass and just kept rolling. His 3rd time up, our manager, who had been playing 2B, called time. He started pointing at various OF's and moving them around. Then, he went out to short LCF, just over my left shoulder, but probably 20 yards behind me. Anyway, we ended up with 5 OF's (for those unaware, we played with 10 men in the field, some teams played a "rover," but most just played 4 OF's deep), 4 on LF side of 2B (well, I guess the CF was probably pretty much straight away CF). Our RF played in RCF, and played so deep, I don't think we could have talked had we yelled as loud as we could.

The irony? I have no idea where he hit the ball, or if we got him out. I do recall asking the manager if he wanted me to move, and his reply was "Just make sure he doesn't take your head off."

I'm a little surprised we have not heard Mark A buying in as a minority owner with the Bucks, as he even he said he would strongly consider it a few years ago. While there would be little crossover between the two teams, as they both require almost all full time sales and marketing folks, one would think they might be a chance they could combine the game day experience.

The truth is, there are only benefits from Act 10 and no negatives at all.

Those "hurt" by it now just have superb benefits rather than perfect ones. Districts are able to fire bad teachers far easier. A lot of selfish educators that were just in it for the money have moved on to other endeavors.

And let's not forget, it was really all about one thing...collecting union dues through payroll, and taking them from everyone. Now that they have lost that, somewhere between 50-60% don't even bother paying those dues anymore, despite supposedly reaping such gains...that they do not seem to care about.

The Pirates have released outfielder Antoan Richardson from Triple-A, per a club announcement. Richardson, a speedy 32-year-old, was scuffling in limited duty. He’s been up in the majors before as a late-season option, recording six steals despite taking only 21 plate appearances. In 785 career plate appearances at the Triple-A level, Richardson owns a .261/.377/.347 slash and has 56 steals while being caught only three times.--MLBTR

Hard to believe in this day of respecting OBP, a switch hitter who has got on almost 40% of the time in AAA and is successful 95% of the time stealing bases can't find a job. He may have a very weak arm, as he shows few assists and hardly any time in RF in a dozen minor league seasons. He has walked in 13.7% of his PA's, an astounding amount considering his lack of power.

The basic income is also a part of The Fair Tax, which is a sales tax on everything. Basically, it gives a person enough money to live a basic, no frills lifestyle; and if they wish, can choose to not work, just study, have fun, "retire" early, and so on. It's utopian in nature, because it kind of ignores the fact many folks would choose to sleep all day, watch movies, gamble their money away in a casino, drink or do drugs; and so on. If they did this, of course, personally, I do not care at all, as I am completely ambivalent about how consenting adults spend their time, unless it costs me money, of course.

Am I in favor of it? Well, I would need to see if it was feasible, but the thing I like is simple...instead of a multitude of government programs that reward the lazy, irresponsible, and ignorant, and have been proven to simply not work at all (our poverty rate is the same as before they existed)...this gives everyone the same amount, and does provide a certain "freedom"...if you want to live a simple life, live in a studio apartment, and so on, you can simply lean back and relax. I would guess many more people would choose to work part time, for example. Many more would start a business of their own, as there's that safety net in place.

The thought I have much does all our silly and ineffective programs cost now? Would it cost more to give every person $1200 a month? I assume so, but I do wonder how much, especially since you don't need to employ people that pretend to work all day with the new program. Eliminate all those pencil pushers that do nothing except try to have a job at the end of the pay period, you could add that money in too.

Chart of how often teams have employed a defensive shift.

The strange one is the Cubs, Theo was years ahead of his time, and Madden used to use them with the Rays. It's almost as if they simply feel they are so good, they're just going to play "straight up" and beat you.

For the most part though, the more friendly the team is to sabermetrics, the more they're going to shift.

4/25/2016 04:09:00 PM

(4/25/2016 03:46:00 PM) - Al

I could easily agree DL rules should be changed. That said, the reasons why need to be a lot better than the ones given here, which basically says "they should be changed because the NY teams have old guys hurt a lot."

It's hardly a big deal to have a player who is injured 7-10 days sit out for a long season, that's probably better for the player anyway. It's also hardly a big deal to play with one less bench player...3 instead of 4, 4 instead of tears are going to be shed.

To me, the simplest solution is simple...the DL rules would not need to be changed at all if the rosters were just expanded to 27. It would cost each team about $1M, maybe a bit more including insurance, benefits, and such. I would also expand the 40 man to 42, though I might only do that from Apr-Oct, as it would allow "fringe" players a chance to move from a loaded organization to a lesser one if a spot opened up.

Most teams would choose to keep an extra pitcher (I assume loogys would be a popular choice) and one position player. This would be an equalizer of sorts to small and mid market teams, as the 26th and 27th men would be pretty equal. It would also be a way to make it easier for teams to carry a Rule 5 pick (or two), another way of cheaply acquiring talent, and yes, it would make it a bit easier for small market clubs to "steal" bonus babies and higher priced international FA's.

Obama's two talking points:

1. The world is going to hell in a handbasket.

2. I saved the world.

I guess if he keeps alternating between the two, some rubes will believe him. As is, this remains the weakest economy and slowest recovery the USA has seen in the past century. Very early trade deadline observation...if Chris Carter continues at this pace, or anything close to it, he is not just a 2 month rental, he's actual under team control until after 2018 season, and as a RH power hitter that can play 1B and LF, would be an upgrade for many contenders.

Aaron Hill has been solid at 3B, and may interest someone as a 2B/3B utility man, but it sure would be a much easier sell if he would work his way up to a .325/.400 nonsucky level. Giving him a day off a couple times a week, coinciding with the opposing team's toughest SP, might be a good way to get him some confidence and artificially raise his production a bit.

On with Justin, I said how much Wily's numbers from last year and this looked like Jake Arietta's from his time with BAL. I will post them below so you can have a look for yourself.

Peralta 2014 and before--3.83 ERA, 6.7 K/9, 3.2 BB/9, 0.9 HR/9, 95 average fastball velocity
Peralta 2015-2016---------5.24 ERA, 5.4 K/9, 3.5 BB/9, 1.3 HR/9, 94
Arietta, career w/BAL----5.46 ERA, 7.0 K/9, 4.0 BB/9, 1.2 HR/9, 93

As I said on the show, there's no way one can expect Wily to suddenly "find it" like Arietta did...but we can hope. It does show that it can happen, especially with Wily's velocity.

Thought my time with Justin went well. I'll link it when I get one.

I will put the numbers up soon as to my comparison of Jake Arietta in BAL to Peralta's 2015-16...they are eerily similar, and while I don't think anyone expects Wily to turn into Jake, it is very possible for a player to "find something" and suddenly be very good. We can only hope, but Wily has the best pure stuff of anyone on the team, and is still throwing 94 regularly...that's a mighty good start.

I'll also be putting up the stuff I prepared that did not have time to use...4 pages and 2.5 hours of prep time, used about 25% of it.

It bothered me the rest of my "career" (losing the term loosely) and still does to this day, because that tendon is still "tight"...I avoid ladders and uneven ground, because you learn to avoid pain. My left calf muscle is often very sore too, as I take shorter steps with that leg, which puts stress on that area.

The Brewers have the worst run differential in MLB, and their expected record is 5-11, or a 50 win pace.

Hopefully, this is just noise from a tiny sample. Much of it is likely due to the results Freeman has put up while trying to get work, and those have been in games already decided.

Freeman quickly becoming an enigma, a lefty who consistently throws 94 who can't get anyone out.

He's been so bad, he might just clear waivers if the Crew tried to send him down, though I assume he would have the right to be a FA. Stearns will have to decide if his potential value if he "finds it" is worth having six relievers and a guy to give you an inning or two in a blowout loss; rather than seven relievers.

When we used to park in a multifloor parking structure at he bottom of the off ramp when we went to Twins' games, we'd walk back to our car about 10PM. I don't think I ever made that 1-2 block walk without seeing some guy peeing outside or in the parking thing itself.

I often discuss being an amateur futurist, or maybe the correct term is hobbyist. I have often said that in 500 years, I have no doubt suicide will not only be legal and far more accepted, it will be a business. Folks will go to the place, sign a bunch of paperwork, and will painlessly no longer be defined as alive, similar to what we do with animals who are suffering.

Back in another era, we were talking one day while we were on break at the toy store, about 5-6 of us, some people said they did not like using the restroom, specifically the urinal, if a gay person was standing next to them. Looking back, this was the mid-late 90's, so today, this would be considered hellishly unPC and that person would have to be warned, or maybe terminated for such a comment.

I said that in the future, I did not think restrooms would be separated by gender, we'd just have "the restroom" and everyone would go there. That comment was received as if I was talking about flying cars or the like. I just thought it was silly to have a different room for each gender to do their business. If urinals still existed, they would also be behind a stall door, and I also imagined stalls being taller, maybe 7.5-8 feet, as no one would like the idea of someone looking over.

I think we're a step closer, as if anyone is allowed to use any restroom they like, it seems silly to have a huge partition taking up space...certainly, retailers can utilize that space far better.

Rumors have Reed, Presley, or Young will be up tomorrow...Twitter seems to think it's Presley, who will have to have a 40 man spot created for him, probably by putting one of the 15 day DL players onto the 60 day DL.

Presley is a lefty bat, but has always hit LHP, while EY Jr. is a switch hitter, and Reed bats RH.

EDIT: Presley did not play in the doubleheader today in Colorado Springs, so he might already be sitting at the hotel in MIL, and would have been activated today, had Counsell not felt "like he needed that extra pitcher," probably made even moreso by the fact both Blazek and Thornburg were unavailable.

Cravy sent down after the game, Counsell says the callup will be announced tomorrow.

Reed did not play in game two of the doubleheader, so I would still assume him. However, given there's no day off until Monday, and the overall state of the bullpen, I would certainly not be shocked to see a reliever like Goforth.

Just took a glance at Broxton's splits, to see if he might be a good platoon mate for Brett Phillips when he eventually makes it up. Keon actually hit RHP far better than LHP the past couple years, so he probably was not "set up for success" playing mostly against southpaws in his short time with MIL.

He's very good in the field, so he can be below average at the plate and still have a career.

No one has mentioned what a good start Garin Cecchini is off to, though it is masked by his inability to hit LHP. His OPS is in the 850 range versus RHP, and while his future in MIL is uncertain (Arcia is bound to be the SS at some point, meaning Villar will likely be pushed to 3B, at least short term), he's on the 40, so they feel he's at least a mild prospect.

Rivera at 2B versus the LHP, but no Mike Reed. Probably a very good idea, as Scooter is a small physique guy and is unlikely to hold up physically playing 150+ games.

Reed's arrival is either delayed or postponed, one would assume. They might feel the need to keep an extra arm in the bullpen, they may feel as if another bad game from Davies would allow them to send him down instead (after FRI, a 5th SP would not be needed until SAT, the 30th).

All opposing SP's are RH until the day off next Monday as well, after today's game, as well.

One thing's for sure: Tonight was a great night for Gov. Gary Johnson.--Matt Welch

Every year in my memory, we could honestly look at the 3rd party candidate and say they had 0% chance to win.

You simply cannot say that this year. Johnson is a former sitting governor who is a libertarian, but whose positions strongly mirror that of a mythical 3rd party we always hear about, a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. If the nominees end up being Trump and Clinton, and big money donors believe he can win and donate early...I don't know what I would say his odds are, but it's far greater than 0%. It's funny because there are normally only about 20 states in play, in a competitive 3 person race, there could be 35-40 states up for grabs.

I don't know if you've ever noticed, but some people do not make good decisions, live upset, always in crisis mode, filled with drama. Don't let their crisis steal your peace. Like a business, you need to have hours of operation. Are you saying don't answer the phone? Yes I am, that's why God made voice mail.--Joel Osteen

This is why people who get married thinking they are going to change the person always fail. Always.

Have you ever noticed that some people are alarmist? Everything is a major problem, a major crisis. If you don't put up a boundary, you'll get pulled right in, stirred up, stressed out. If you don't make sure they respect you, you'll be dealing with the same people and the same problems twenty years from now. You are too important to allow others to hold you back. Do your part, be a giver, go the extra mile. If you're taking in all this extra drama, you won't have enough energy for your dreams, your destiny. I'm not saying be selfish, but you cannot fix everyone. Some people don't want to change. They don't want to be happy, but don't let them keep you from being happy, and enjoy your life.--Osteen

Funny, this reminds me of a major political party, but I just can't put my finger on it.:)

We need to raise taxes because otherwise children and the elderly will all starve to death, die of the cold or the heat, and if I'm not mistaken, make your pop flat and your cheese curds fattening.

Counsell did say they intend to go with 13 arms at least until the MIN series in MIN is complete, which is Tuesday. The Twins also throw a LH SP WED, so that would probably all add up to Mike Reed joining the team, at least short term, before the WED night game.

(4/17/2016 03:26:00 PM) - Al

I was soaking my feet when the bloop/grounders through the hole fest took place, but it will be interesting to see why Counsell says he removed Davies after less than 70 pitches, and while his numbers look ugly, he allowed few hard hit balls, and was a victim of bad BAbip and less that perfect defense.

The matter was made worse when the Crew almost hit around the next inning, forcing a PH for Cravy, after only 2 outs, who I would guess they had expected to eat up at least 1 2/3rd's, and maybe quite a few more.

That just seems like focusing on the result and not the performance. And, despite having Cravy as the 13th pitcher, you're still forced to get 5 frames from the rest of your bullpen.

(4/16/2016 10:36:00 PM) - Al

Davies called up to start SUN, Broxton sent down. The team site is calling this a "spot start," even though there are no days off upcoming to allow a 4 man rotation.

EDIT: The Crew would need another SP FRI. Counsell points out they really do not worry about a 4 person bench when they play the Twins in MIN, and that does make sense.

He also says he does not expect to go with 4 OF's long...does that mean Davies just pitches tomorrow and then goes down? They have several other options to start FRI on the 40...Junior Guerra and Jorge Lopez are in AAA. They could bring up an OF after the game and then send Cravy down before the FRI one, or, might just be holding onto Cravy in case Davies has a short start.

I admit, it's kind of fun to see them trying to play these roster games...while they are very minor in nature and give them only a small percentage better chance of winning each game, the mere fact they are thinking and working with Craig to give him the pieces he wants to play with, would seem to bode well for the future.

Before getting too excited about the Crew's 5-5 start, do not look past their 36 runs scored versus 54 runs allowed, a -18 run differential.

The Twins are 0-9 and have a -22. As the TV guys pointed out, they are where they are because they have won the close games while losing blowouts...that tends to even out pretty quickly.

Also a little bit surprised about everyone's surprise over their ability to walk...while some are probably unsustainable, like Gennett; almost every single offseason pickup; Carter, Villar, Walsh, Hill, Broxton, Flores, and Nieuwenhuis, have mediocre to above average OBP, and many have accomplished that despite low BA...meaning they walk a lot.

Lots of mentions on Twitter today that Mike Reed played CF for the first time this season in Colorado Springs. His OF partners were Peterson and Presley, both of which are also capable of playing CF but better suited as corner guys. Of course, so was Gorman Thomas and many others who end up in CF because they're the best option and just end up staying there.

Reed is probably a forgotten man among prospects, kind of a tweener, 4th OF type, but if he continues to develop, he'll be an everyday player. Still just 23, and with a career .376/.381 line, and with 263 walks versus 1568 AB's, he more than passes the 1:10 ratio Billy Beane made famous a decade ago (actually is less than 1:6, very impressive).

Next question...if he is a "true" prospect, should he be brought up to play a couple times a week in CF? Right now, I would say he is far better suited to play 5-6 days a week in Colorado Springs, probably splitting time between all 3 OF spots, as he would probably be the first call up in case of injury to any of the OF's.

As long as the lead remains 3+, might well see Cravy get into the game, as he is almost certain to go down after tomorrow's game. Might want to let him get as many outs as he can.

Just a way of cheating the system a bit to keep the relief corps fresh.

McCutchen is playing about 40-50 feet in from where you would normally see the CF playing versus a power hitter like Braun. I'm not sure if I've ever seen anyone play that shallow on a regular basis.

I missed this trade yesterday, and I would say at first glance, two immediate thoughts come to mind:

1. The Titans really can't lose in this deal, as they are spreading the risk around and will certainly get several quality players out of it.

2. While it's a cliche of massive proportion, this could end up being a deal that works for both clubs...the Titans are likely a couple years away, while the Rams were mediocre and have a solid D and a plus running back. A top QB might put them right into the playoffs, and that would make an immediate impact as they try and make a dent in the huge, apathetic LA market.

Excellent article on taking a day or three off while on a business trip.

Back when I often had to travel to Milwaukee or the Twin Cities for meetings, I would often work half a day the day prior and leave at 1 or 2, so I could get there by 5ish, so I could go to a Brewers' game or a movie, eat a good dinner, and relax by 10 or 11. Meanwhile, others would either arrive late in the evening, or, leave home at 4AM so they would get there by the 8AM start time, exhausted and looking like they'd been up all night.

I know many people see a 12 hour drive and want to maximize their time when they get there, so they want to get there in 12 hours. I get it, but, golly, enjoy the journey.

I've been out of the dating scene for 20+ years, but, are there really people asking potential dates their sign? I have heard that this used to be common, back in the "old days" of the 60's and 70's, but, I cannot believe it still happens.

Shocked to see Logan Schafer has not found a team yet.

Funny, I got far less disagreement when I said Logan would at least be a platoon CF in the majors than I did when I said Gomez would sign another huge contract (I recall the phrase "out of your mind" being used often on Carlos).

The thing about Schafer is, he's so darn gifted defensively, he doesn't have to hit much to have value. That said, he hasn't hit much (605 OPS) and he's 29, so he is what he is at this stage, a gifted defender who can play all 3 OF spots (+7 UZR/150) at a plus level. On a team with a mostly RH OF, it just seems like he'd be a good fit.

Hard to believe how little Matt Adams is playing, a solid 1B with a career 820 OPS versus RHP. SL, however, has little reason to look to deal him, as he only makes $1M and Holliday is injury prone.

That said, if the Cards have a need later in the season, teams such as the Brewers who are looking to buy low should ask, and then ask again.

TV says Isan Diaz is off to a good start in Appleton. I don't pay any attention to stats of any kind before 30-40 games have taken place, as it's a tiny sample and meaningless. However, if the Brewers need a player, past performance plays a part, but they will not disregard this year's numbers. Davies and Junior Guerra have both pitched nicely at AAA, as has pretty much the entire bullpen.

Mike Reed and Alex Presley are off to good starts in the OF also.

Might be another chance for Sam Freeman to get some work and hopefully show he's still got it.

I think getting Wily some extra work and saving the bullpen is far more important than perhaps keeping a run or two off the board...the odds the Crew scores 6-7 and not 8-9 is very close to zero, as they have been dominated thus far.

You do not want to embarrass Wily, but as is, this is a near by the book punting situation.

As often is the case, Peralta is not pitching his best, but also getting very unlucky. I bet his BAbip is .400+ this season.

Brewers face LH SP in the next 3 games. I assume that means Broxton will play at least a couple of them, and Scooter will probably get at least one game off as well.

I don't think this has happened more than once in the past five seasons. It's been rare that they face back to back southpaws.

Davies has pitched nicely in both his AAA outings, so will almost certainly be the SP called up to pitch Sunday.

Going down? Well, Cravy has a couple options, so he would be the favorite, barring injury or someone just not pitching up to par.

Adam LaRoche comes off as a good man, but one that is very out of touch, probably due to the fact his dad was a pro athlete and he is too.

Note that Brewers' reliever Blaine Boyer is his good friend, and they went undercover last fall to try and catch an Asian sex ring specializing in minors.

EDIT: Meant to mention it's easy to see how they settled on Capuano and Boyer as the "last men" in the bullpen, as both are well known to be very nice, good influence on the youngsters types.

I won't mention specifics here, because the Rambling wife was told about this by a member of the family, but Governor Walker took time out of his busy schedule a while back to attend a memorial for a veteran he had met and who had supported him. He arranged for a fly over at the burial. He met with the family in a private ceremony before the public was allowed in. He stood in line to pay his respects, even though he had no real reason to do so. He shook hands with others who introduced themselves and welcomed him to their community.

So proud we have a real leader as our governor. He's said what he means and meant what he said. He's lowered taxes just like he said, taken care of the deficit just like he said, and created a rainy day fund. All with common sense; less spending, allowing those who made the money to keep more of their money, and not allowing special interests to bitch and moan their way to better benefits than those who pay the bills.

Al Gore should be in prison for being a lying extortionist. John Edwards said there were two Americas, and he's a scumbag in both of them.

It should be noted if either of these pigs were not liberals, they would be ripped apart on a daily basis by the old media. As is, Edwards cheated on his ill wife openly for months on the campaign trail in 2008, going out to dinner, movies, and theater on a nightly basis with his mistress, and every single one of the dozens of media that followed the candidates completely ignored this little fact, for fear of damaging the the Dem brand, and possibly the Dem president or VP nominee.

Finally, after many tips, supposedly numbering in the thousands from the public who saw the behavior, which was in no way hidden, the National Enquirer broke the story, and the old media shrugged their shoulders, apparently having been holed up in their hotel rooms like monks, reading the bible; having had never seen Edwards with the tall blonde with whom he was never apart for months...because they are journalists, and report the news in an unbiased fashion.

Good to see nice crowds this weekend, I believe they are at about 177K after 6 games. The WED matinee was about 20K, by far the smallest.

I don't think anyone is expecting 3M through the turnstiles, and even if they have the same attendance as the past few seasons, they will take in less revenue, as they will, in all likelihood, be more aggressive in discounting tickets than in the past. With so many people seemingly "making it a tradition" to see games in JUN/JUL/AUG, I expect to see crowds in the 35K range rather than sellouts or near sellouts...however, I felt (and still feel) the potential for heavy drop offs were in APR/MAY/SEP.

Last year, they started so badly, it hurt advance sales right away. I know I have heard that they usually sell 1-2K tickets after almost every game (for those that do not know, yes, they have several ticket windows open after each game at MP) and probably many more online. After a win, they sell more, both then and the next day. That alone creates demand, as it tightens supply...if the popular summer weekend dates fill up, you'll see the weekday games getting 38-40K too.

I never heard a number as far as how many season tiks they sold this year, but I know early on they said the decrease was not as high as they thought. Last year, they drew 2.543M, and at this second, it'd be tough to predict an increase. However, I can't say I see a huge decrease either. I'd likely set the over/under at 2.45M right now.

I often tell my clients a story about the Rambling dad. He was a farmer, and like many self employed folks, and those involved in the dairy industry (never mind both), he would often nap during the early afternoon, right after lunch. Many of my clients say they often take a nap then as well, and admittedly, I usually wait until 2/3PM, though I stay up a lot later than he did. I also mention how he often snoozed while reading a magazine or newspaper, and never seemed to lose his place, a skill that deserves some credit.

I mention this because the past few months, I have suddenly started falling asleep on the sofa, while watching TV. I doubt I had done this more than a dozen times in my life prior, and have likely done so 15 times in the new year. Often, I just catch my head falling, and I stop myself and wake myself up. Every once in a while though, I've fallen asleep and not woke up for 10-20 minutes.

Enter today. I was watching the Brewers, top of the 7th inning. Thornburg was pitching. He was doing fine, got an out, maybe two. Suddenly, he walked a batter. Then, he made a bad throw...wait a gosh darn minute, when did Blazek come in?

Somehow, I had missed the last out or two in the top of the 7th, the entire bottom of the 7th, and the beginning of the 8th, when Blazek had entered. My mind had just "pieced it all together" without even knowing. Has Blazek not made a poor throw, I likely would have not even noticed and fallen back to sleep. Because something "out of the ordinary" happened, I noticed. Maybe, he was skipping paragraphs or jumping stories too, and just never noticed.

Of course, the Rambling wife missed all this, as she almost always takes a Sunday afternoon nap. Maybe I should begin to do the same.

4/10/2016 05:23:00 PM
