The sad thing is, this entire message is basically just double talk and hyperbole.
The USA has very little poverty, and as many have stated, the "poor" in the USA have an existence that is only dreamed about all over the world...most "poor" have an apartment or house, a car (many families have 2 or more), plenty of food to eat, cable/satellite TV, internet, a computer, a cell phone, a video game system, air conditioning (50 years ago, almost no one had AC in their home), a microwave, and easy and inexpensive access to a washer/dryer.
What Bernie wants to give out "for free" are basically luxuries; college is unneeded for most professions, and if you want to educate or better yourself; libraries are free, and the internet has more information on it than any of us will ever have time to learn. Do a search on You Tube, thousands of college lectures are available. And while healthcare continues to be discussed...most who choose to be not covered do so for two simple reasons...they are healthy and broke. There is no fear of bankruptcy or "losing everything"...can't get blood from a stone.
I have suggested adding medical bills to college loans as things that cannot go away in bankruptcy. I have long said health costs keep rising due to the lack of a limit on punitive damages...I have no problem with victims recouping actual loss of income. But, as we all know, juries hand out cash because they can and "well, it's just that big evil insurance company paying it." But, insurance companies simply raise premiums, and hospitals, clinics, doctors pay more. Guess what they do? Hence, why Obamacare has done nothing to lower costs, it lacks any legal reform...and the legal industry LOVES the Dems, and hands over money by the bucketful. And, to be fair, they probably give half as much to the GOP...half of oodles is still oodles.
