The Rambling son was confirmed today, so I'm just sitting down to watch the DVR'd game.
The Rambling sister made it up for the ceremony, and among other things, we chatted about how the "bandwagon" fans are already either ignoring the Brewers or talking kind of negatively. The irony there is, even those of us who were somewhat optimistic had them winning 70-75 instead of losing 100. Both 62 and 70 win teams are going to go through some bad stretches...heck, all but the 110+ win teams, like the Mariners that one year, have bad weeks and months.
I mentioned that one reason is simple...the Packers and Badgers' basketball and football teams have had such long runs of success. many folks are so spoiled, they have no interest in following even a .500 team. I remember one person on my Facebook feed going on and on last year about the Packers' final game, as many fans' memory was so short, they only remembered that final Cardinals' drive, and how disappointing it was to lose like that...seemingly completely oblivious to the fact they only tied the game on a hail mary that was severely misplayed by ARI. Casual fans tend to only recall bits and pieces, and often nothing before the 4th quarter...heck, many fans don't tune in until the 2nd half or later
One person asked him, hey, didn't you used to be a Cowboys' fan? He said he always rooted for the Packers, but "always had to have a team that was going to be in the playoffs." Heh. That's like bragging about being faithful to your supermodel wife who also has her own show on the Food Network.
As I have said for a decade now, wait until that first year the Badgers basketball team goes fails to make the NCAA tourney...heck, I've read for two years now, after a couple conference losses or a bad couple non conference, that the other teams had "figured out" Bo Ryan and the swing offense...never even realizing that last year, they had such talented personnel, they stopped running the swing and reverted back to a more "generic" offense, and just let their talent win games.
You see the same thing now...almost everyone in the offseason was suggesting the Crew would not contend for several campaigns, as if it was a given. Now that they are off to a bad start (or, perhaps a better term would be "as expected, less than stellar first month"), I see some folks saying 2021 or 2022 would be their next opportunity.
Now, do not get me wrong, a full rebuild often takes 5-7 years. However, rarely does a "tear it all down" rebuild go like this; 58 wins, 64, 68, 74, 79, 84, and tada, 90 wins and the playoffs. Often, they bounce around as injuries, breakouts, and the like happen. There's also the disagreement over when it began...to me, trading Yo was the first step, meaning in my head, I already see this as year two, and the fantastic return of high level players in the Gomez/Fiers/Parra deals probably, realistically, have us at year 2.5 or maybe even 3.
Regardless, 2021 is 5 full seasons away. Take a quick gander at the 2011 final standings and see if it looks similar to right now. That's a long time, to say the least.
