Yahoo reports Will Smith to SF.
Jeffress told JS he knew he and Smith may be broken up, would be "tough to handle."
EDIT: I will continue to update other post, scroll to the bottom.
EDIT 2: Link to SF MLB top 30. I would expect 2 prospects, one in top 6-7, other in top 15. Joan Gregario looks like a Stearns type of guy.
THE RETURN: Phil Bickford was SF's top ranked prospect, 1st round pick last year. Also a catcher, Andrew Susak, who Keith Law says is a solid major league catcher. They say this makes it more likely Lucroy is gone.
Susak is a nice, young player, with solid numbers at both AAA and SF. Bickford, however, is the gem, a young top RHP, the 65th best prospect in the game.
In both 2014 and 2015, the Giants spent their top choice on a pitcher who had turned down the Blue Jays as a first-rounder out of high school. Following in the footsteps of Tyler Beede, Bickford signed for $2,333,800 as the 18th overall pick last June. Selected 10th overall in 2013, he began his college career at Cal State Fullerton before starring in the Cape Cod League and transferring to the JC of Southern Nevada so he'd be eligible for the 2015 Draft.
Bickford can hit 98 mph with a four-seam fastball and miss barrels with a low-90s two-seamer that features plenty of sink. His slider can be a plus pitch when his mechanics are in sync but also can get slurvy when he doesn't maintain his release point. San Francisco was pleased with the strides he made with his changeup during instructional league and would like to see him use it more often.
The Giants envision Bickford as a starter, though some scouts think he's destined for the bullpen. He's a good athlete who usually fills the strike zone, but he sometimes lapses into overthrowing and has trouble maintaining his arm slot. His stuff is electric in short stints, so he's a potential closer if he can't make it in the rotation.--MLB prospect write up
Remarkable return for a reliever who has struggled of late and missed much of the season with a knee injury. Astounding. Similar to top 2 players CLE traded for Miller (of course, they got 2 more lower level guys).
SF said a week ago Bickford was an untouchable, but were willing to move their 2 and 3 guys. I guess that's why you wait.
40 man will be unaffected, Smith off, Susac added. Bickford does not need to be added until after 2018, or when he makes majors.
Official, moving post below rumors.
