As the Brewers’ brass has suggested, Heyman says that the team is not inclined to utilize Jonathan Villar at third base. With Orlando Arcia seemingly set for his first full season at short, that may well mean that Villar is destined to shift over to second base. If that’s the case, it’s not clear just what role Scooter Gennett will have. The 26-year-old is entering his first season of arbitration eligibility after a posting a below-average .263/.317/.412 batting line in his 542 plate appearances in 2016.
Meanwhile, the Brewers may not be sold on the idea of tendering Chris Carter a contract. While the team has suggested he’s expected back, Carter’s 41 homers also make him a good bet to earn a rather significant arbitration raise.--MLBTR
Scooter is slightly below average as a 2B, but was still 22nd of 33 2B that had 325 PA's or more; and had a 729 OPS versus MLB 2B average of 772 (in 2015, however, it was 711, so that seems like a huge, unsustainable 9% jump from year to year). He had a better OPS than Brett Lawrie, Chase Utley, Joe Panik, Kolten Wong, Dee Gordon, and Josh Harrison; to name a few, so one would certainly think he will have value at his first year arby salary in the $3M range, as three teams finished with a 2B OPS of 620 or lower.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if Carter ends up being dealt after his fine campaign, as few things are as sought after as RH power. Add that to the fact that MIL has made public they would like to become more LH, and 1B is by far the easiest position to find lefty bats, it only makes sense to "sell high" on Carter. Nothing Stearns loves more than trading someone for young and controllable players and then replacing them with a free agent (coincidentally, last year he dealt Rogers and signed Carter)...just a quick glance at the 1B FA list gives us Adam Lind, Logan Morrison, James Loney, and Mitch Moreland, all 4 of which have been rumored to have Crew interest in the past (except Lind, who actually played a season in MIL); all plenty passable, and all LH hitters.
