Homemade pizza for New Year's Eve night...check.

Steak, shrimp, baked potatoes, and Red Lobster biscuits for New Year's Day, check.

Then, on the 2nd, we start eating better.

And this time, we mean it.

Happy New Year Rambling faithful.

Or, for you negative nellies, thank goodness 2016 is over, because some musicians and actors passed away, from decades of drug use, old age, and so on. Don't worry, I'm sure that will not happen anymore in 2017.

Note to Ohio State or Clemson...you are not going to outrun or outathlete Bama.

The Buckeyes, at least in theory, might be able to run the ball as they did in the past. Watching Washington try and run laterally on a kickoff (4-5 Bama guys were waiting) is just painful.

If memory serves, a life policy on a 60ish woman (a few years ago, before Force Awakens) would cost about 33-40% of the payout, so Disney probably paid $15-20M for it...though it if was a term policy, only covering her up until her filming was complete, they might have got away as cheaply as $2-5M.

I still say much of his "popularity" is pure fiction...Trump's ratings are higher in some polls, and to be blunt, Obama's are a result of almost 100% "approval" from blacks, who have set low expectations, which have been met almost precisely.

It is astounding more Dems have not pointed out his negativity, just a few positive words and phrases from Trump seem eerily noticeable after 96 months of disparaging the citizenry as "bitter clingers" and insisting he knows more and that, despite history, his failed ideas will work the next time.

12/30/2016 06:17:00 PM

(12/30/2016 06:05:00 PM) - Al

I've disgustedly talked about the lack of phosphates, hot enough water, and the like before too. Why? Because if the government takes control of what your detergent has in it, and whether you wash your dishes at 140 instead of 170, soon, they'll be able to control your healthcare (oops, too late) and a dozen other things.

Can you imagine the old media making fun of Trump if he suggested we tax the living hell out of American companies because they are causing unseen, unnoticed changes to the world's weather? But if you start slowly, and keep repeating the same thing long enough (and ignore the many cases of data that was simply made up or falsified), eventually, folks who are perfectly willing to ignore "the most qualified candidate in history" is under FBI investigation...for several things, and has the tech knowledge of your average elderly grandma (go figure)...you can pretty much sell the rubes anything...or so they thought.

Mike Rowe is 100% correct again. A huge majority of problems would be solved if we had fewer poetry and philosophy majors telling our high school students what direction they should go with their educations.

As I have pointed out often, those students who looked at the military as a realistic option after high school were treated as if they volunteered for jury duty...ignorant and shortsighted.

We are hampered, in effect, by our incredible wealth and our prosperity. You have folks on the left insisting our economy is in shambles because not everyone has an above average income; even though it's mathematically impossible, and even poor people in the USA are 99% comfortable and safe (not to mention fat, he said about no one in particular).

Al,

I saw a segment on MLB Now on the MLB Network about the need for the Brewers to trade Ryan Braun now, at any cost in order to free up money for the 2018 free agent class. I found the segment online for your readers to watch.

Now, I am all for trading Braun if it help's the team's long-term success. That said, I disagree with the main commentator when he states that if the Brewers can find a team to take on most of his contract, they shouldn't worry about the prospects coming back. That's just silly talk. Braun is the Brewers' biggest trading chip and they need to maximize that. And as you have said before, his contract isn't that bad compared to new contracts being signed.

Just thought you might be interested in this segment.

Keep up the good work.

Bert

Thank you for the link Bert.

We would all love to build a team with a big name free agent or three. It's easy to fill a hole and give little or nothing in return. However, while you might be able to fill a bullpen spot or a platoon bat to protect a young hitter, small market teams in the upper Midwest are not going to land Bryce Harper, unless said FA grew up there. The Brewers are always going to build with young players.

Also, Braun is well underpaid compared to Cespedes and others. The fact these "insiders" fail to comprehend that makes me think many have the jobs they have due to nepotism and having connections than vast knowledge.

Fact check: True.

The left despises successful folks. I was attacked when I suggested how sad it was that Gabby Giffords was a hero to many Dems because she got shot. They didn't like it, but they knew it was true.

That's one reason their bench is so thin...they reward loyalty, not accomplishment. Ted Kennedy killed a woman and fled the scene, no one blinked an eye. Being an incompetent drunk was not damaging, pointing out Hillary's weaknesses is...that's why no one did until it was over.

They're still hesitant to do so.

My Twitter buddy Hannah is quoted in this Teen Vogue piece.

The funniest thing is how they don't feel blacks should be Republicans. You know, the party that ran as anti slavery, and was also ant sharecropping. Don't forget, it was the GOP who pushed through the voting/civil rights of blacks in the 60's, fought tooth and nail by Dems. Al Gore's dad was a KKK member. So was Robert Byrd. It's like if they don't mention it, we're too dumb to look it up.

Rewriting history is exhausting, and the internet is too damn full of the actual truth. Ask Obama how his legacy is looking.

I've read Charlie for years, though I have not for 6 months or so. He's been through a rough stretch.

Part of being a conservative is taking care of those who are struggling, while the left thinks the government is the answer to everything. If you are comfortable and find yourself fortunate as the year comes to a close, Charlie could use a helping hand.

How dare some dude treats a woman who dresses slutty like a slut?

There's a lesson to be learned there. Ladies, if you act or dress a certain way to attract men, don't be surprised when they look elsewhere when you put on a few pounds. And guys, ditto.

Back when I was in retail, I drove to Des Moines with my frame shop manager. I wore my usual long shorts and loose polo shirt, and she told me I looked like Charlie Brown. I replied I knew the Rambling wife was a keeper because she did not try and change how I presented myself. Life's too short not to be comfortable.

You know, maybe another channel should not openly lean well to the left and maybe "balance" it out a bit. Somewhere in hell, Lenin and Marx shake their heads and wonder why Pravda wasn't as socialist friendly as MSNBC.

The irony, of course, is CNN and the non cable networks gave Trump all kinds of free coverage early thinking he would tear the GOP apart and, if somehow nominated, be easily defeated by Hillary, because she was so damn likable.

I'm not saying they're out of touch, but this New Yorker cartoon is satire everywhere except Manhattan.

Hilarious piece on those still pouting and blaming those stupid flyover rubes for the election results.

I laughed so loudly to myself at the San Francisco gal, I googled her...Yahoo "travel editor," Columbia grad (the stuck up Ivy League school, not the cocaine laden South American land, where Meghan McCain once said she attended 8 semesters and met one other human being that would admit to her they were a Republican). Never worked a day in her life, and her only knowledge of the land between the coasts is to sneer with superiority at the vast expense of land that makes her SF-NY flights so damn time consuming.

35 year old woman, who despite being pronounced pregnant by a certified medical doctor, claims to have never once considered the 50/50 possibility she may have a male child...until a god damn capitalist was elected.

Someone that mindless and moronic deserves every ounce of scorn she gets.

Pay close attention to PolitiFact, WaPo Fact Checker, etc. now. How they deal with Kerry speech will tell you a lot about their mission.--Seth Mandel

For those who did not see it, the best description I can make is it was a lie of infinite length. It was a kick in the groin to the only democracy in the Middle East, and our best ally.
I have become used to our foreign policy being an embarrassment the past 8 years. This was far, far lower than even I can recall. The only way it could have been more anti Semitic was for Kerry to say, "And not only that, but Israel has never picked up a single dinner tab."

Israel has never done anything except defend their people and their borders. Sadly, that's why the current administration despises them so. Their strength and perseverance makes that past 8 years look even more cowardly and gutless than it's been.

We will miss the brilliance of Tom Sowell, without a doubt.

The funniest thing is, he was labeled as a racist by many in 2009, as was everyone who did not kneel at the Obama altar. Sowell explained for 8 years why Obama's economic plan would not work, and now we still see many on the left blaming "bad luck" and "the Republicans blocking him."

It is what it is. Supply and demand does not stop existing because you don't understand how it works

No one wants to say it, but the real problem here is simple...men have a difficult time proving that they did not do something...because it's impossible.

Bought milk today for the first time in ages, as I don't drink anything with calories and neither the Rambling wife or son ever drink any (both myself and son could live on chocolate milk, especially the stuff with carrageenan in it that you buy, that makes it all slippery and yummy). It was $2.36 a gallon at Target, which seems like $1.50 less than I used to pay.

Maybe the government buying up all that cheese has kept that artificially high but not had an impact on liquid milk.

Odd way to begin the season for the Badgers, they play Rutgers tonight to open the conference campaign, then have a bye this weekend, meaning they do not play again until next TUE.

I wonder if the players get a couple days off so most of them can get home for Xmas or if they tried to sneak home last week after their game on the 23rd, which seems very rushed and doubtful.

There's an icy puddle about 5 feet wide and a foot deep directly in front of our driveway. Years ago, we had a storm drain there, but since it was slowly crumbling away, they removed it and another 1-2 on our culdesac.

When the guy came to tell us our driveway would be blocked while they did this, I asked where the water would go that used to drain. He looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "It will just go down to the next one."

No. No it doesn't. That's why there was a drain there. Government at its finest.

Packers/Lions game moved to SUN night next week, winner wins NFC North.

Packers cannot win a wildcard berth regardless of their performance next SUN night, however, they will know whether or not they have clinched a wildcard by the time the game is played...if the Giants beat the Redskins, GB will be in the playoffs win or lose. If the Redskins win, they will be a half game ahead of the Packers, so GB has to win the division or not make the postseason.

Some outlets still list the Bucs as having a chance to make the playoffs, but TB has tweeted out themselves they have been eliminated from the playoff race, per the NFL.

A wise man said something similar, but I just can't place it.

A socialist on my Facebook (he would say he's a proud liberal, but the difference is minimal) recently wrote a lengthy curse filled post when he read that Trump carried more of the evangelical vote than even W. Of course, after calling them idiots and other more offensive names, he wondered how such a group could stand to vote for a gent who is not known to be religious. The only reply read simply, "Religious folks are used to being attacked and mocked for their beliefs. We barely notice anymore. However, when such basic freedoms are taken away, such as having to bake a cake for a wedding you do not feel should be sanctioned by the state (note the immediate hypocrisy when the left has vehemently defended those who do not wish to bake, plan, or open a meeting hall for a Trump inaugural fiesta); Christians saw the writing on the wall and voted to preserve freedom."

Hillary was looked at as Obama has been, one who sees the entire demographic as "bitter, they cling to guns or religion." Both would do anything in their power to simply ignore the constitution or "clarify it." Chelsea told an anti gun group exactly that, that they needed to "give her mom the chance to flip the court."

Many folks missed the boat completely, they thought anyone except Trump could win, when in reality, it is very likely Trump is the only one who would have denied HC the presidency. They failed to see how vital four years of court appointments were. Evangelicals did not. Trump was not their preferred candidate, but he was better than the alternative.

The irony is, Trump is most moderate Republican elected in my lifetime, and it isn't even close. He's the most gay friendly of all time, which makes the hysterical reaction of the left even funnier and foolhardy (and, if he has an ounce of success, very shortsighted).

The fact is, they are extremely unhappy Hillary Clinton was not elected, who broke every rule doing a terrible job as Sec of State and was an unhappy, unsmiling, and unhealthy candidate. Not electing HC might be what saves the Dem party, as she would have been awful and after folks grow up and use some common sense, might finally get rid of that old, white, elite faction of the party that has happily inserted so much far left elitism into things.

We had family Xmas yesterday in Richland Center and used one of our free hotel nights to stay in the Dells. Worked out perfectly with the snowy, slushy roads. We may just be middle class, but we are hotel nights rich.

I could have updated Ramblings with my phone, but it's a lot of bother, and I don't know how to do links anyway. So, I will pass on my one thought from last evening now...Giannis better enjoy Xmas Day off...it might be the last year they don't play that day. His two weaknesses, poor outside shot and inability to draw fouls; are still there, but have both improved to where they are probably better described as "not strong points."

You could argue he's the best player in the league right now, but it's pretty much just accepted he's top 5. That's quite a statement to be all but above question.

Target open until 10PM tonight. Wal Mart closing at 6 as they have for a decade, though it will likely be tough getting the store "closed" much before 7.

The Rambling wife just went out to pick up pasta sauce at our neighborhood grocery and they are closing at 6.

(12/22/2016 04:30:00 PM) - Al

Hi Al,

A couple big upsets highlighted week 15.  Kansas City losing to Tennessee on paper shouldn’t have happened but Tennessee is playing better football than most people realize.  Washington getting beat bad by Carolina was also unexpected as only 8 experts had taken the Panthers to win.

For the week you went 11 – 5 which put you in 79th place out of a total of 135 experts.  The top pickers with 14 – 2 records were Ryan Van Bibber (SB Nation), Tyler Brooke (Fansided), and Mike Renner (ProFootballFocus).

For the season so far you have picked 138 games correct which puts you into 69th place.  The leaders with 149 correct are Chris Burke (SI.com) and Elliot Harrison (NFL Network).

The biggest favorites to win this week are New England, Green Bay, Seattle, Dallas, and Pittsburgh.  Almost every week 2 or 3 of these favorites end up losing.  I’d lean toward Pittsburgh and unfortunately Green Bay to have a clunker and get beat.

The too tough to call games are Cincinnati at Houston, Tampa Bat at New Orleans, and Miami at Buffalo and you could probably include NYG at Philadelphia, Atlanta at Carolina, and maybe Washington at Chicago.

To you and your family and to all of your readers, have a Merry Christmas!

Jim R.

Merry Xmas to you too, Jim. I got the Giants tonight, though I pondered it a while.

Home Alone and Xmas Vacation are my favorites, with a traditional viewing of A Christmas Story annually.

I saw White Xmas for the first time last year, and found it dry as dust. Just reeking of a "who the hell cares" quality...fake importance. I don't care if it snows, I don't care if they put on a show, none of it.

12/22/2016 04:29:00 PM

(12/22/2016 03:30:00 PM) - Al

Just a coincidence I'm sure.

12/22/2016 03:30:00 PM

(12/22/2016 02:05:00 PM) - Al

Back when I ran retail stores, the busiest day was always the SAT before Xmas or the 2nd SAT before Xmas, depending on weather and when Xmas fell (if Xmas was on a SUN-TUE, many people celebrated with one side of the family on the SAT before, so that meant it was 2 SAT's before).

This year, as has been predicted for quite a while, it looks like tomorrow is the day. All the consumer confidence numbers have skyrocketed since the election, so I think many folks are out buying more than they expected. I saw one poll on the local news last week that said 65% were more optimistic on the economy than last year.

That would mean many of the folks who voted the other way have either changed their mind or simply admitted the positivity of others will lead to better days.

12/22/2016 02:05:00 PM

(12/22/2016 01:30:00 PM) - Al

Oh to be as miserable as the immensely wealthy and unhappy first lady.

As I often say, the bitchy ones always have a full belly and a warm, comfy home. They are just proof that the negative nellies are always gonna be negative.

12/22/2016 01:30:00 PM

(12/22/2016 11:30:00 AM) - Al

Don't pretend this does not go on all the time. As a fat guy with graying hair, I always had to be twice as good as the young handsome fella to be considered for the same job in retail. I had to work my way up from a part time gig to management, while people a decade younger would walk in with a degree and think they were going to be a district manager in 6 months.

It's almost the opposite in sales. I have often said clients take me more seriously because they think the fat old guy must know his stuff if he's able to make a living in such a competitive field.

Kind words for Domingo.

A good sign of a casual is a fan who wonders why Santana has been a disappointment. He's young and he's been unhealthy. Nothing hold back production more than those two things. Some folks wonder why Orlando Arcia is not an all star yet too. The fact he's 21 plays a large part.

I don't know if he'll be a star or just a decent everyday player. He's a nice piece, to be sure.

(12/21/2016 06:17:00 PM) - Al

Fact check: True

The left's continued insistence that Trump voters are simply too dumb to understand how damn intelligent the other side is...makes me smile at the pure shortsightedness of their plan.

Begging for their vote after calling them names is a hail mary plan at best. Sadly, memory spans are so minimal, it may not matter.

Why didn't anyone do anything about the Electoral College people not voting as they were supposed to?

I doubt they ever will until enough of them makes a difference in the actual outcome, as let's be honest, the feds are far from forward thinkers, unless it involves figuring out ways to take more cash from the successful and giving it to the unsuccessful.

Subsidies suck. Even when they help the local and state economy.

1.2B pounds of cheese. And shockingly, when the government keeps buying it, the price goes up, and production goes up. It's a vicious circle. And one that defies common sense.

Meghan McCain has been saying this nonstop as well. I have trouble believing Obama would be that stupid after W received 8 years of kudos and respect just for keeping quiet.

They seem to think Obama will simply not be able to not be in the limelight...and attempt to repair his legacy, which at this second, is all but a disaster. Obamacare costs more and has higher deductibles than what we started with, he doubled the debt and had nonexistent growth, and worst of all, did nothing on foreign policy except apologize and posture.

If memory serves, they're the same ones who wondered why Carson, Christie, and Palin were so stupid as to endorse Trump because he had no chance to win. After all, Hillary was so darn stellar and trustworthy...well, you know the rest.

Cook shortage? Cooks "only" making $13-14 an hour?

Granted, you're not going to buy a mansion making that, but, guess what? Most folks don't own mansions. The author is pretending making $30K a year is starvation wages, while in reality, many people do their job very well for a decade and make $9.75 an hour, which is less than $20K.

Don't like it? Get into another profession. Supply and demand doesn't quit making sense in the back of a restaurant.

After disembarking from Amtrak's Cascades line at Portland's Union Station, I was a bit put off by the dozen or two young men camped on the sidewalks just outside the station. These were not your ubiquitous 30 to 50-year-old panhandlers you encounter in cities from San Francisco to New York. They were younger, and they were not even panhandling. My son, Jake, who had been a student at Portland State for two years, said it was a Portland phenomenon, where young men, and sometimes women, simply live and sleep on the city's sidewalks. They have essentially dropped out of society. We encountered dozens of these vagrant pockets throughout Portland.

Being from a rural area where young men don't live on the sidewalks of the local towns, it made me uncomfortable. But Portland is one of America's more progressive cities, so I assume this new social phenomenon is just a generational experiment, perhaps a new model of youthful freedom that will soon be emulated in other cities across America. I saw several mobile soup kitchens and social workers catering to them.--Backwoods.com

Sam shares this link. I saw a HBO special years ago which followed young homeless around and they mentioned how "friendly" Portland was to them...not chasing them out of parks at night, for example, which means after dark, Portland parks are a haven for drug dealers, hookers, and those looking to buy their wares. So, the result is and was...ne'er do wells everywhere, as well as the problems that acccompany them; syringes, litter, human waste, and so on.

Don't believe me? Google up Portland homeless.

4 or 5 man officiating crews?

Oof. I'd rather go with 2 man crews, as it would limit how many games are called by the lowest rated officials. Plus, when you get that many whistles on the court, guys get antsy ("I have only blown my whistle twice") and you start seeing touch fouls that severely slow down the game, and limit the flow.

Imagine the outcry had Laura Bush said, as Michelle Obama did, about the new president, "Now we're feeling what not having hope feels like."--Larry Elder

Fact check: True.

The difference? Laura Bush is a classy woman. And Michelle Obama, a lawyer, redid the nation's school lunch system and, unsurprisingly, sucked at it.

Trump says she "could not have been nicer" and he feels there's plenty of hope. Very polite way of calling her two faced. I've met a lot of two faced people in my life, and I can't say I care to be around any of them.

Yet, Democrats, you so far seem to have learned nothing and forgotten nothing. What happens when a university pretends they are law enforcement.

Players can't prove a negative. They cannot prove they are not guilty. As much as I despise a bunch of spoiled, coddled athletes effectively getting free room, board, and education for doing nothing, the U of MN brought it on themselves.

This is simple really. Colleges need to get out of the sexual assault investigation business. It's basically just another way to discriminate against men.

I have heard almost no "buzz" about this standalone Star Wars film, Rogue One, as I did The Force Awakens last year.I don't expect it to be close.

That said, if it does $20M tonight and $100M for the weekend (my prediction), $120M is a fine opening, especially with many college students nestled away in safe spaces because they are wussified still in class and/or taking finals, with the heavy movie going holiday season nearly upon us. The cold in some parts of the country won't help either.

EDIT: Estimates are of $30M tonight, probably a bit optimistic.

Rambling wife says she'll stop on the way home from home tomorrow and get a few groceries for the weekend (we are forecast to get 7-12 inches of snow FRI/SAT). She's making homemade soup and homemade bread SAT, for example.

Years ago, when the Rambling son was a little fella, I said something to the effect of "Well, we're going to fight this weather by going out on the deck and spraying aerosol cans for a while." A few minutes later, he appeared again, all bundled up in a winter coat, hat, gloves, and boots, ready to go outside.

He understands sarcasm much, much better nowadays.

(12/15/2016 04:30:00 PM) - Al

Hi Al,

You’re movin’ on up!  Week 14 had you picking 12 of the 16 games correct which put you into 4th place.  The top picker was Dan Graziano (ESPN) at 14 – 2.  The big bugaboo’s for most of us was the Houston win over Indianapolis and the New York Giants beating Dallas.  Only 10% picked Houston to win and just 17% picked the NYG.

For the season you sit in 59th place with 127 correct picks.  The leader is Elliot Harrison (NFL Network) with 137 right.

For week 15 none of the games meet my criteria for “tough to pick”.  The only close ones appear tp be Detroit at NYG and New Orleans at Arizona.  However, there are an abundance of overwhelming favorites this week.  They are Seattle, Green Bay, Houston, Buffalo, Baltimore, KC, Atlanta, and Washington.  Be careful of the teams that start to rest their star or slightly injured players to protect them for the playoffs.

The Thursday night game between LA and Seattle may be a better game than it looks.  Seattle is having some trouble scoring and LA has fired their coach which can sometimes give a team a little boost and they play harder.  But I think that after a tough week LA gives up.  Seattle 24, LA 10.

Good picking,

Jim R.

I was thinking the same thing with the Rams/Hawks, and if it was at LA, I'd seriously consider taking them. But, even though SEA is struggling, they rarely lose at home, and after being shellacked in GB, they won't look past anyone. That said, SEA is a 14.5-16 point pick, the largest line I've seen in the NFL in a couple years. I'm taking the Seahawks.

The left has been "faking news," or simply not reporting it, for decades. Remember the way they simply tore apart Monica Lewinsky as a home wrecking tramp? Now, not only is she a hero, but so is Bill.

Yet, W is vilified, but no one really has a reason to do so.

90% of all government jobs are "job creation" attempts.

That's why we're $22T in debt.

Facebook friend offering $7-8 frozen pizzas for their kid's fundraiser.

Reminded me of this. I also recall seeing a "don't have to dress up or leave the house dinner"...you donated $100 a couple, and you could tell everyone you had a charitable function, and instead you could stay home, watch TV and order in Chinese or pizza.

The funny thing is:

1. Not only is it a pain to get hit up to buy overpriced crap so they can buy new uniforms, they raise just as much because 100% of the funds go to the cause.

2. I do that every day. I just don't feel the need to lie about having a charitable dinner to go to.

FYI, Eric Thames told Tim Allen of 105.7 in Milwaukee to pronounce his name as it appears, Thames, as in rhymes with flames, with the "th" sound.

Bumped, update below.

I was not expecting Stearns' fiancee to be homely, but not so stereotypically young, blonde, and thin either.

Nice touch buying gifts. We did that for a decade plus, but got away from it the past couple years (though come to think of it, our local pizza place gave away a pizza if you brought in a toy, so I guess this is the first year we missed it, as the Rambling wife was gone 3 weekends in a row). When the Rambling son was 3-5, we would take him with us and tell him how important it was that he pick out a couple gifts for a little boy that they would like, and he took it as seriously as any task we've ever given him.

EDIT: The wife informs me she bought toys because she's attending a play in which admission is a Toys for Tots donation WED evening. I married well.

WTMJ interview recap with Stearns

Stearns says they see Bandy as an above average defensive catcher, with good power and above average contact rates.

First time I've heard David even mention contact.

Stearns says it may well be the first deal he's made in MIL that he dealt more players than he's gotten back.

Both the host and Stearns are pronouncing Thames as "tames." I've seen a few folks insist you say the "th" as normal, so as of this second, I'll go with the GM's pronunciation.

Stearns says he expects Villar to play mostly 2B. Gennett will have to battle for playing time at 2B, and has no problem playing elsewhere. Will be in the mix.

Expects Braun to be back in LF.

Mentions Knebel, Torres, Marinez as steadying forces in bullpen after trades were made, and will likely have some outside help by the time the season opens.

The pro abortion folks hate this bill because there's too much common sense in it. They are also terrified to take it to the Supreme Court because it might overturn the current law of the land.

Hence, rock meet hard place.

This is why the election was so important, and why the anti Trump folks were so incredibly selfish and misread the public so. They just didn't think he'd win, so they threw the entire party under the bus. Those are the exact people we don't need in Lincoln's party.

A wise man suggested a similar bill last summer, and had a half dozen emailers insist it was unconstitutional. It is today...but it may not be in a year or so.

Maldy and Drew Gagnon go to the Angels for a slightly younger catcher.

Bandy would seem to have a slightly higher ceiling, but isn't as respected as a defender, though he did have decent caught stealing numbers last year in AAA and the bigs (37 and 40%).

He also has an option remaining. We'll probably see Stearns make a statement soon. I assume saving a bit of cash and acquiring a younger player with more potential was the key to this minor swap.

Will miss Maldy. Loved the arm and occasional pop. No doubt Bandy's power (9 doubles and 8 homers in just over 200 AB's) had appeal.

David Stearns says Bandy has plus raw power that hasn't necessarily shown up in his stats. Playing time split with Susac/Pina remains TBD.--Adam, MLB.com

Yep, tough to find a catcher with plus anything offensively.

I just spent an hour looking for paperwork for a client. Found a couple other things I needed, but could not come across what I was looking for. Looked in my file cabinet for the 5th or 6th time...they were right in front. Both had cover sheets paper clipped to the front that I was not expecting, so I assumed they were not it.

Take your time. It's probably where you expect it to be. I checked my glove compartment 3 times...it ain't that big.

Righty Ryan Webb has joined the Brewers on a minor-league deal, the team announced. He’ll come to MLB camp next spring in hopes of earning a spot in the Milwaukee pen. The 30-year-old allowed 10 earned runs on 27 hits in his 18 appearances last year with the Rays, but otherwise maintained the same sort of peripherals that have allowed him to compile nearly 400 innings of 3.43 ERA ball as a big leaguer.--MLBTR

Sinker/slider, ground ball type. Good enough he probably has some type of opt out either at the end of March or after May/June.

Update near bottom.

Stock tip emailed to me to "sell short" (sell shares you don't own, betting on a price drop) on DPZ (Domino's) due to an unprecedented milk contract increase of 1-5% earlier today.

Of course, I'm sure DPZ has much of their cheese cost locked in well into the future, because it's good business to do so. That said, why the sudden jump? Related to the cold and snow in the USA? Often, commodities rise as a group, and oil did rise slightly today, as OPEC agreed to cut production a tad, but only about 0.5%.

BUMPED/EDIT: Noon local news says the government lowered their numbers on the slower than expected growth of the US dairy herd next year, per Bloomfield Ag News.

Quick thoughts on Rex Tillerson:

1. The left hates all capitalists, even moreso, a successful capitalist.

2. I have no idea on if he is the greatest man since Reagan, or if he's Pete Sellers in Being There. That said, considering his predecessors are John Kerry and Hillary Clinton, the bar is set so low, Barney Fife would be an improvement.

If you missed these numbers on MNF last night:

The Patriots have won 86 games in a row that they led at halftime.

The Patriots have won 91 games in a row that they led at the end of 3 quarters.

Add that to the Badgers' basketball consecutive top 4 finishes in the Big Ten and trips to the NCAA tourney; we are living in an age where even though I know they exist, I still don't fully believe in these streaks. They simply defy logic.

The truth is truly far stranger than fiction.

I agree with them. And they're right. Very few people go to church on both Xmas Eve and XMas Day. Even more important, XMas is the #1 family holiday in the USA.

Forcing people, especially your A1 volunteers to "work" that day after working all day the 24th, and often delaying travel to do so? Not good PR. It pushes people away.

I must admit, I can see why this guy runs a growing, successful church. Talks about giving people a Sunday "off," and about keeping his people refreshed and ready to go. Talks about "slow Sundays" and seems to understand how to manage people, and the big picture.

Brewers sign Ivan Dejesus to minor league contract. Good versatile fielder (has played 2B/SS/3B/LF, has hit in AAA but not in bigs, which usually means he struggles with off speed stuff.

Very likely just signed for AAA depth, but it's hard not to compare him to Yadiel Rivera, who has never hit close to Ivan's level in AAA or the majors. Yadi has to be very close to the 40th man on the 40 man, so nice addition.

Don't forget, about 90% of grade school teachers are female. About 60% of college students are female. And if you are accused of sexual assault in college, you are forced to "show your innocence," which is not just unconstitutional, but it is impossible to prove a negative.

First of all, I've seen nothing to indicate Russia did anything to hack voting machines (as often pointed out, voting machines are very low tech, and are not online), but did supposedly hack some of the info that ended up on Wikileaks (some caused by Hillary refusing to use proper security protocol).

But, let's not forget, not only did Obama insist ISIS was a JV team, he laughed at Romney saying they were someone to take seriously.

It's tough to look back at 8 years of his foreign policy and see anything but incompetent, miscalculations, and the USA losing any and all the respect it once demanded.

 Hi Al,

Looks like we’ve reached a point in the season where the games are becoming a little bit more predictable.  All of the biggest favorites won in week 13.  To me the most disappointing game result was the KC-Atlanta game where KC intercepted Atlanta’s 2 point conversion try and ran it all the way back to the end zone for 2 points of their own.  As a result the Chiefs won 29 – 28.  Most people picked the KC-Atlanta and Detroit-New Orleans games wrong.

The top experts for the week had records of 13 – 2.  They were Gordon McGuiness (ProFootballFocus), Josh Hill (Fansided), and Jon Machota (Dallas Morning News).  You had 11 correct which put you in 42nd place amongst the 132 experts.

For the season Elliot Harrison (NFL Network) and Mike Middlehurst-Schwartz (USA Today) are the leaders with 126 correct.  Your record of 115 correct picks puts you into 92nd place.

I guess if I was looking for an upset pick I’d choose one big favorite to lose this week and it would be either Minnesota, Atlanta, Detroit, or Indianapolis.  Hopefully it’s Detroit, the Packers need all the help they can get.  The tough games to pick look to be Denver at Tennessee, San Diego at Carolina, Arizona at Miami, and Seattle at Green Bay.

Good luck in week 14.

Jim R.
