Video store employees are few and far between.

So are video stores. I know we still have one, but I don't think we've visited one in a couple years. Between Netflix and Redbox, there's not much reason to do so. I think the store, which is Family Video, still gets many new releases up to flour weeks ahead of "the box," but, let's be honest, I spend many weekends watching SVU and Criminal Minds all day.

BAL seems to be one of the couple teams in MLB, along with ARI, which not only do not follow "normal" procedures, but they go out of their way to be different.

In this case, they liked him enough to give him $7M, but now are turned off by 44 AB's? That, my friends, is just painful on many levels.

If Korea wasn't akin to A ball, I think he'd be a great guy to take a chance on, though I'm not sure if he can play RF or not. He reminds me a lot of Aoki just looking at numbers. If BAL pays all but $1M a season, I would say his ceiling is far higher than Presley or Nieuwenhuis.

The old media that seriously discusses the idea of Montreal getting another MLB team reminds me of those that insist socialism will work...this time.

See, if you ignore the history of failure, the lack of any financing or an inkling of such for a new stadium, complete indifference of the fan base, and test pattern TV and radio ratings...it doesn't seem like a bad idea.

It makes me think of government that forces high speed rail upon its citizenry, because investors know full well there isn't a prayer of it ever making a dime....huge start up costs, high maintenance, limited demand. But, government doesn't worry about profit and loss...the taxpayers have an unlimited wallet, in their mind at least.

Neither do sportswriters. I'd put a second team in the Oakland Sewage Coliseum before putting one in Montreal. Because I learn from history. At the very least, they can build a major league ballpark first. Until that's 100% complete, it doesn't exist in my mind.

It's far easier to control the population when you control information.

Healthcare was step one. You've already heard Obama and Sanders talking about doing the same to the internet. Somehow, I doubt all the news would make it on there. NPR would resemble Barry Goldwater compared to the jibberish buffoonery found online in Demland.

And, as has been proven throughout history, that some ignore, the amount of people willing to work 40 hours a week when they pretty much get the same thing by not working is very close to zero.

That's why nearly all socialist regimes end up being strict military regimes...somewhat "overlooked" by those who choose to insist "this time it will work."

Trump is either having something like a nervous breakdown or he wants out of the race through the crazy door. Either way, a mess for the US.--John Schindler

Earlier today I said his behavior had been off. After delightfully lacking specifics, talking tough, and moving to the top, the last couple weeks have been predictably bad...now that alternatives are lacking, his supporters, which usually top out at about 25-35%, are not large enough to win. I would guess, based on his ramblings the other night, he has decided to move left in order to separate himself from Cruz/Kasich, and hopefully appeal to the many indys/moderates that have joined with Republicans. My goodness, he sounded like he had moved left of Clinton and Sanders.

Trump is well behind in WI, about even in CA and several other states...but momentum is not looking his way. It is now very doubtful he'll get the required delegates; or even close enough where he could sneak over because of politics (no pun intended).

As expected, Brett Phillips and Jacob Nottingham will begin the season in AA Biloxi. Phillips, to be blunt, may be gone by the all star break if he is productive.

(3/30/2016 02:10:00 PM) - Al

I'm picking and choosing my numbers here freely, but I'd say the most interesting set of numbers in the MU Law Poll are these:

Trump--30%
Trump unfavorable--70%

If you like him, you're voting for him. If you don't, you ain't. Cruz looks to have momentum and, at best, Trump has been bouncing around so much on issues and beliefs, it's enough to push many elsewhere.

I've read several pieces the past few days talking about this being quite possibly the most important election the Libertarian Party will ever have. The possibility of a 3-4 way race, with several of the candidates expected in the race having very high negative numbers (Trump/Clinton often have 60% or higher, Cruz at or about 50%), means Gary Johnson, or whoever the party puts on the ballot, actually has a fighting chance at getting 25-30% of the vote, if only they can get their message out.

With so many deep pocketed donors, some anti Trump, some anti Clinton, some pro Sanders (despite vast ideological differences, Johnson/Libs and Sanders do agree on a few topics, including the legalization, or vast decriminalization of drugs); one would think some cash will become available. In a recent survey, the still mostly little known Johnson got 11% of the vote when given as an option to Trump or Clinton.

People do not realize it, but the most often mentioned traits of a mythically successful 3rd party; fiscal conservative and socially liberal (much like myself) sums up the majority of Libertarians, although they are a very fragmented group, with many tiny factions (Christian Libs, anarchists, isolationists, to name a few, mixed in). That said, many of those smaller groups, for lack of a better term, do not play well with others, which makes them all but meaningless.

Lowering taxes,[11] allowing people to opt out of Social Security,[12] ending welfare,[13] ending the prohibition of illegal drugs,[14] supporting same-sex marriage rights,[15] and supporting gun ownership rights.[16]--Wikipedia's Libertarian current policy positions

The other day I said I would likely send Broxton down to AAA to play every day and pick up a RH bat to platoon in CF and back up the other spots. Lefty masher Drew Stubbs became available, and just might have minimal value at the deadline.

However, no one cares what I would do. Stearns, I assume, will keep Broxton, with the only OF question being Presley or Nieuwenhuis.

It's not selfish to take care of yourself, or even be comfortable or wealthy. Andrew Carnegie did not build most of the libraries in the USA by living check to check.

And despite the fact the government has been taking tax dollars for almost 250 years, note that most brick and mortar libraries were built by a single philanthropist. Just think how many nice things we'd have if we allowed the successful to keep their money instead of punishing them because government "knows better."

Mpls is not just far left, but it has been for over half a century.

When the Rambling wife and I lived in the Twin Cities, we avoided all of Mpls like the plague, except to hit the Metrodome on occasion. It was a hellhole a score ago, and it still is.

(3/28/2016 07:01:00 PM) - Al

Counsell said team "wanted to remain flexible" with final roster spot.

Reading between the lines, I assume that may mean they wanted a pitcher with options they can send up and down between AAA and MIL. That does not bode well for Pena either. May well mean they have an eye on someone in another organization or they might end up with Cravy just to have the freedom to be able to swap him out with Goforth and others.

3/28/2016 07:01:00 PM

(3/28/2016 06:25:00 PM) - Al

The final bullpen spot is down to Cravy, Pena, or someone from outside the organization. Adam says not to ignore that final possibility.

From where I sit, the fact they took Capuano instead of Morales might well indicate they have another loogy in mind for the final spot, or a reliever only capable of going an inning, for the most part.

3/28/2016 06:25:00 PM

(3/28/2016 05:39:00 PM) - Al

Capuano makes team, Morales released.

I'm very surprised. Franklin is a proven, if uninspiring left releiver, and of course, many moons younger than Chris. One has to wonder how much Capuano's "nice guy" appeal and leadership played into the decision.

I have heard Petraeus' name mentioned as well as Mattis'.

That said, Petraeus' has been talked about mostly as in "He could easily win had he not been caught."

There are likely a few others as well, as one would only have to get about 35-40% of the votes. And, let's be honest, the electoral college makes this even easier...that mythical candidate would really only have to get the most votes in 15-20 select states.

It's funny because it's true. Take a look at a satellite photo of North Korea after dark. That's how they make everyone equal, they make everyone dirt poor.

3/27/2016 03:07:00 PM

(3/27/2016 02:59:00 PM) - Al

With Sunday's notifications, the Brewers have four relievers for two remaining spots (Tyler Cravy and Ariel Pena, plus non-roster invitees Chris Capuano and Franklin Morales), three infielders for two spots (Yadiel Rivera, Colin Walsh and non-roster invitee Hernan Perez), and three outfielders for two spots (Keon Broxton, Kirk Nieuwenhuis and non-roster invitee Alex Presley).--MLB.com

I hope they keep Walsh. He has 1-2 skills, and they involve not getting out and hitting the ball hard, especially considering he plays 2B/3B and in theory, could easily contribute at 1B/2B/3B/LF/DH.

I would not mind at all if they kept Perez and sent Rivera down to split time between 2B/SS/3B and play six days a week. With SS the offensive black hole it is, I'm not sure there's 30 better ones than Perez in the majors. Yadi is still just 23, and is good enough in the field to have teams interested in him as an everyday player now.

I assume Cravy will go down because he has options. My strong preference would be Pena and Morales, due to present and future value. Small chance someone might want Cappy, far better chance they would want Morales.

I like Broxton enough that I would just as soon see him play at least 3-4 days a week somewhere. Nieuwenhuis is a very solid reserve, and versus RHP isn't too far from an average CF. Presley is what he is, but mostly he's a LF who hits like a CF. He's not a bad bench bat, as he hits LHP very well for a LH bat.

If I were Stearns, I would have Broxton play every day in CF in AAA, have Phillips in AA, and find a RH or SH that can play all 3 OF spots (basically, a healthy version of Liriano) on the waiver wire. However, since Keon turns 26 in May, and to many, profiles as a reserve, I would expect him to make the team.

Eric Young Jr. has been sent to the minor league camp.

Braun, Santana, Flores will probably be joined by two others. Liriano is on the DL, so that leaves Nieuwenhuis, Broxton, and Presley. Or, of course, a player soon to be DFA'd.

3/27/2016 01:39:00 PM

(3/27/2016 12:55:00 PM) - Al

The Brewers have added Blaine Boyer to their 25-man roster, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Journal-Sentinel (on Twitter). Boyer, 34, posted a 2.49 ERA in 65 games for the Twins last season, but that was offset by a sub-par 4.6 K/9.  Now that Boyer’s fate has been decided, Milwaukee must figure out what to do with Franklin Morales and Chris Capuano who have opt outs on Monday and Tuesday (respectively).--MLBTR

I never thought Boyer would be seriously considered, because of his very low K rate and age. Also, his presence on the 25 man makes it all but impossible for Ariel Pena, who is out of options, to go north. Pena does not have a real high ceiling either, but is far younger, can go multiple innings in relief, and can even step in and start, as he did last year. My thought is they may try to sneak Pena down at the end of March, though he can choose to be a free agent, as he has been outrighted before.

Of course, they might simply be looking to trade Boyer, either now or in July. Maybe they already have a deal in the works. Or, maybe they simply like Boyer/or do not think as much as Pena as I do. Boyer does have a very good track record versus both lefties and righties.

Brewers outfielder Ramon Flores will make the Brewers’ big league roster, as Todd Rosiak of the Journal-Sentinel tweets.  Flores was out-of-options, so the team did not have the option of sending him down to the minors.--MLBTR

I assumed Flores would make it, as he is very young and has the potential to be an everyday player in the majors. But, you never know.

Clinton started the destruction of the military, and Obama has gleefully continued the slaughter.

There can be little doubt it is being done just because he can, as spending on everything else is at a 240 year peak. And despite continued concern about fictitious end of the world scenarios, the only thing the president has proven to be good at is an ever expanding carbon footprint and wasting enormous amounts of money on selfish motives.

Two lefties with Brewers' ties told they will not make the Tribe. Thatcher is a loogy, while Gorzelanny is more of a Capuano type.

That said, Joe seems far more likely...as the Brewers already have Capuano. Stearns might have some memories of Thatcher from HOU as well.

EDIT: Thatcher is 34? Where does the time go?

(3/26/2016 11:38:00 AM) - Al

Will Smith has a torn LCL (layman's terms...a bad knee).

He will look at the options of surgery or rehab, but, regardless, will miss at least a few months, or quite possibly the entire season.

Devastating loss, though many would argue a rebuilding club has little use for plus relievers. I would say this makes it very likely the Crew is active in the next week, either picking up a late inning guy in trade or a loogy on the waiver wire.

EDIT: No, I do not mean trading for a KRod type. I mean trading for a reliever who, because of salary, lack of options, numbers, or who just might have an upcoming opt out clause and have a better opportunity to go north with MIL.

Never good news, of course, but far better to happen now than in a week or two.

EDIT 2: And I see this as being great news for Franklin Morales. Barring something we have not seen, I'd say there's a good chance he's already been handed a spot on the team on the "master whiteboard" in Stearns' office.

Incredible season, astounding from where they were in mid January. Every single rotation player due to return. We're living through the good old days, and we are very spoiled group.

Will Smith has a swollen knee, Counsell says "it's concerning."

Obviously, they will be very conservative with him, as it's probably just overuse or repetitive motion. Likely do an MRI and rest in the meantime. Could well open on the DL, and just like that, great news for Morales and Capuano (or maybe a LH reliever that is DFA'd because he's out of options that has some upside).

Surprised to see Zack Jones pitch in a major league game yesterday. He is supposedly healthy and will not open the season on the DL. Given he would have to be kept on the 25 man all season, and at the moment, profiles to be no better than a middle reliever, I doubt that's the type of ceiling the Crew is looking for from a Rule 5 pick (heck, Ariel Pena is out of options and could fit in as a middle reliever or as a SP as well).

Cotts released, and the purge begins.

You could put together a respectable team just with players released/DFA'd/optioned between now and Opening Day. You would have a weak middle of the order and a plethora of bottom of the rotation SP's, but you know what? Probably wouldn't be the worst MLB team out there...other teams are choosing players because they're younger, or have options, or because they had some popups fall in or got some base hits versus pitchers long since sent back to minor league camp.

You'd have a few platoons, several guys on the wrong side of 30, lots of pitchers that lack velocity, and a few vets coming off down seasons. But, odds are, several would revert to form, and several would be plenty passable. It's just like in AAA, a prospect laden team like the Brewers' Colorado club will probably trail in the standings to a team made up mostly of AAA veterans, mostly non prospect types. Why? Because the Brewers will work on developing talent, working on weaknesses, and the like. Those other teams will play the hot hitter and not worry if their 32 year old "ace" throws 105 pitches in April.

Notice that he was wrong about the 72 degrees. And will continue to be. He would like electricity to cost double, and coal to become scarce, but he wasn't smart enough to do any of that before the rubes revolted and gave him a GOP congress.

Note the similarity to Sanders though, in his overall tone. We cannot be comfortable, we cannot enjoy ourselves. We must all suffer.

And note, all that does not apply to them. Only the little people.

The Rambling wife and I were laughing at the letter we got from our mortgage company. They recently informed us they would be lowering the money taken out for property taxes each month (thank you Governor Walker!), and now, since we overpaid last year, sent us a nice refund check. So, we can spend it on wine, women and song; invest it, or, if we want, we can use it to pay off our mortgage quicker, just by following these easy steps:

Write "pay to the order of X" on the back
put your mortgage # on the front
sign the back
write a letter, on separate paper, explaining that you wish to make an extra payment
mail all of this to this address, which is not the same as the return addy, or the regular addy

I kept expecting the final step to be "pat your head while rubbing your tummy," but hence, I was incorrect. Or, as Rambling wife pointed out, we could just deposit the check and then next time she makes a payment online, pay that much extra, hence eliminating almost all the work.

Good to see none of these places have bothered to open a division of common sense.

Left-hander Cesar Jimenez hasn’t arrived at the Brewers’ Spring Training camp, and while the team hasn’t heard anything official yet, Jimenez might be retiring, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tweets.  Jimenez appeared in 16 games with the Crew last season after he was selected off waivers from Philadelphia in August, and he signed a minor league deal to return to Milwaukee in January.  Jimenez, 31, has a 4.05 ERA over 104 1/3 career innings and parts of six big league seasons with the Brewers, Phillies and Mariners.--MLBTR

I forgot all about him. He signed first to play in Italy, then signed with the Crew.

Cesar wanted to pitch another year or two, but is in so much pain has given up for now. Being at less than 100% is so common place for pitchers, many struggle to ever admit they are hurt.

Counsell had a pair of interesting thoughts today that I have alluded to here:

1. CF will not be a starter and a reserve situation, will continue to have several players man the spot.

No use letting 2-3 dozen PA's over rule common sense and a career's worth of production. Probably will just go with the hot hand or the player with the platoon advantage.

2. Not just looking at current roster players for final spots, will consider guys released by other clubs as well.

Looking to get younger and better. Jeremy Jeffress, though at one time drafted by the club, was acquired as a minor league free agent.

This is exactly how I feel. Instead of catering to the bullies, apologizing for American exceptionalism, and asking them what they would like so they can stop being envious; let them know it will be a painful death. No mercy, no hesitation.

I hearken back to the first Gulf War, all the talk of the old media was of the vaunted Iraqi Republican Guard, the best of the best. After weeks of bombing, weakening the supply line and devastating the equipment, when ground forces moved in, they found many of the Guard had simply gone home. Those that remained tripped over themselves to surrender, tired of being hungry and cold. That was the elite.

The Brewers were talking with the Astros and Braves about a three-team trade involving Jonathan Lucroy last month, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports.  Houston made an attempt at Lucroy earlier in the offseason, as previously reported by FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, and the club has also been linked to Braves center fielder Ender Inciarte.  This isn’t to say that Inciarte was also necessarily part of this three-team proposal, of course, as Atlanta’s role in the trade could’ve taken any number of forms.

Lucroy has been the subject of many trade rumors this winter, to the point that he and his family don’t have living arrangements in Milwaukee settled yet since he presumed he was going to be dealt.  “It’s all out of your control. But communication is a big thing. I’d like to be kept up to date what’s going on. It’s not like I’m going to spread it all around, I just want to know when it’s coming, when to expect it,” the longtime Brewers catcher said.--MLBTR

Lucroy doesn't seem to fathom the fact that all 30 teams do not have the exact same goals and be in the exact same place every season. And, as I recall from previous years, the players basically tell the team where they would like to live, in what kind of housing (house, condo, apartment) and they do all the legwork for them. I'm not sure what he expects, as he's in MIL until a deal is complete. There's no "kind of" or "sorta" traded.

(3/23/2016 01:33:00 PM) - Al

A couple thoughts about the election.

1. Those that continue to say Trump cannot win...denial ain't just a river. How long can you keep this up? He was a joke last summer, you insisted. Sanders is a socialist. The only reason he's in it is because of how hated Clinton is.

2. The threat of a 3rd party run by someone continues to be bandied about, and many conservatives have already said they will not support Trump, instead voting for some dude on the ballot that they know can't win.

The irony? Trump seems far more likely to win a 3 way race than a normal one. Let's look back at 1992: Bill Clinton won with 43% of the 54% voted (that's 23% of the public). 19% voted for Perot, and 1% for a 4th person. No one else is discussing that little nugget of fact yet, because they're reactionary and not looking at the big picture. Can Trump get 43% in a 3 way? Yep. And he doesn't need that, because we still have the electoral college, which is there to, wait for it, keep a candidate like Trump out. If Trump wins with a mirror of Clinton's votes, we know they will call for a complete revamping, because if we've learned nothing else, the left believes in what's best for the left...their beliefs ain't even close to skin deep.

3. The number of stories about delegate counts is just blather. If Trump get 47%, 48%, whatever, the only way for him to not win is for the GOP to force it onto someone else. And you know what? That alone might win Trump the presidency. Think how furious many would be. His supporters would go ballistic. Many unsure or on the fence would see that and think, "they're trying to keep him out...that's why I want him."

4. This could be the return to the days of PT politicians...of the days when a business owner, be it a farmer, electrician, printer, whatever, would lead for 2-8 years and then return home. As I have pointed out, we no longer need to have them meet in DC or Madison, all that can be done online. That is also conducive for a gentleman (or gentlewoman) politician.

5. Finally, and I'm repeating myself, but when Romney was the nominee (and McCain to a point too, though Palin added so much excitement and appeal, it was minimized) we all yearned for an exciting, funny, and not dull person. We yearned to expand the party, bring back those Reagan Dems. Now, many yearn for Mitt Romney. What the hell? Romney is a good man, but simply did not inspire enough folks to shut off The Price Is Right and go door to door, make phone calls, and vote. Yearning for Romney is like yearning for an old girlfriend who cheated on you...move on.

6. Finally part 2...if the goal is to expand the party, having people say "I'm not going to vote for anyone who is not a Christian," or "Well, he's not staunchly pro life," well, his opponents will not be either. Quit your pouting, and quit picking up your toys to go home. Sometimes, it's pizza and steak for lunch, other days, it might be stuffed peppers or chili with beans (even though, chili, by definition, does not have beans, damn it). Make the best of it.

Weather Underground--tells of 10-14 inches in their "warning," but forecast has 6-11.

Accuweather--6-13 inches, if you add up all the totals for today, tonight, THU.

Weather Channel (weather.com)--6-11, again, adding up today and tomorrow.

National Weather Service (weather.gov)--12 inches.

I always used to prefer Accuweather, because they tended to be the least extreme...you know, 87 sounds better than 91, -18 is preferred to -25. However, last year I discovered the "graph view" of WU, which tells you the high and low and predicted rain/snow right at the top, and then a daily graph of the temp/rain chances.

The temp is pretty unimportant, but if the Rambling wife wants to take a walk, WU will tell you the chance of rain increases greatly at 4PM. Also, if the Rambling son wants to bike to school, all he cares about is the weather from 7:30-8 and 3:30-4. Often, there will be a high chance of rain, say 70-80%, but the amount is guessed to be 0.04 inches. How bad can that be?

As for this batch...geez, who do you root for? 6 looks like a best case scenario, and the 20 mph winds will make it bad hours after the snow ends. This seems like a situation when schools will just cancel tomorrow tonight, as most have had few weather trouble this year. In our case, he's off Good Friday and all next week, plus the following Monday (I assume for the Opening Day/NCAA basketball final unofficial) holiday.

If off THU, that would be a 12 day break...not to get all "back in my day" on you, but I recall many years growing up our "spring break" was 4 days long...and yes, that includes the normal 2 day weekend. Not many trips to Florida back then.

EDIT: Weather babe just predicted 8.5 inches for Wausau. I like the sounds of that.

Nate Orf may only have one skill, but not getting out is the best skill to have. At some point, he'll probably stop getting on base at a .378 clip, but until he does, he's a prospect, undrafted or not.

He would be a nice utility player even if that number fades a bit, as he has played 6 non battery positions, and could, in theory, play all but SS and CF in the majors.

They did not say who that came from, but is what I've been saying for a few months now. The Gomez/Fiers/Parra trade added 5 high level prospects who will step right into major league roles, barring injury, by mid 2016. That's an unheard of return for FA's to be and a SP.

Oddly, Kirk has a higher career OPS (not by much mind you), is more than two years younger, and is far superior defensively, plus in CF and overall, while Alex is well below average everywhere except LF. In fact, the only thing I can see that Presley brings to the table over Nieuwenhuis (other than far easier last name to spell) is that his splits are about even, while KN is a far better hitter versus RHP and is all but an automatic out versus LHP.

Another oddity...one insisted Nieuwenhuis would never be claimed on waivers, even though he was traded for once and claimed on waivers twice in the last year.

Weather Underground forecasting 8-12 inches of snow for WED. Others only with a 2-4 inch prediction.

The Rambling wife and I were discussing this before she went to work. We can understand one being higher than others, but WU is basically saying we will receive a minimum of far more, twice as much, as are the others. That seems way off base, and makes one wonder if they just are hoping for a large total...for the same reason the TV folks love breaking in for "severe weather" from noon-10PM, which looks a lot like a regular thunderstorm, while tornado sirens and high winds at 2AM don't even warrant a scroll on the bottom of the screen...because they're home in bed.

Liriano's injury seemingly gives a clear path to Keon Broxton to make the 25 man roster.

The only other player who saw their odds increase substantially was Eric Young Jr, and I would argue his fate may be more closely related to the infield mix, mostly Colin Walsh.

Al,

As a Marquette alum, I always root for the Badgers unless they're playing my team. Married a WI girl and she celebrates with a scream and a jump up and down. I give a fist pump and say, "Maybe someday."

Yeah, it's not the same when you're a casual fan. Same way I root for the Bucks, Panthers, and Phoenix.

I think the Media made Trump by spinning his first speech as "racist". It’s like the boy who cried wolf.--Big City Cowboy

The cries of racism have pretty much been ignored since 2009, because anyone critical of raising taxes or not believing in socialized medicine was immediately treated as if they used the n word.

Trump's "racist" statements, as much as I can tell, were to say he'd deport criminals here illegally back to Mexico (something most of the country feels is common sense, and the old media thinks is somehow mean) and for saying Islam instead of "radical Islam."

A Dennis Miller line seems fitting here...while the old media pulled their hair out for months trying to figure out what to call Prince when he insisted on going by a symbol, they finally decided on "the artist formerly known as Prince." As DM said:

Wanna know a little secret? I just kept calling him Prince.

Calling something what or who it is doesn't offend anyone. One of many reasons why they just don't "get" Trump.

Just read a story about a person who has been going to the chiropractor for years and years, pain keeps returning, goes all the time, helps but not for long.

Heck, I can do that without going to the chiro.:)

The oddity is, there are many who swear by their chiro. I worked with a person who was in so much pain after a car accident, she said she understood why folks consider suicide, and her provider got her back near normal. Chiros now treat ear infections, strep throat, colic, and pretty much everything under the sun. Obviously, they have some success, as people would not keep going if they did not work, and insurance would not pay for it either.

Some think it's some sort of voodoo. Many feel these "adjustments" are basically a temporary change which kind of, for lack of a better term, "fools" the body into feeling better until it works its way back to normal. And, the placebo effect is mighty strong...that's why faith healing works, and also why "new age" providers are popping up all over in urban areas, despite no medical evidence they do anything other separate money from the suffering.

The truth? As with most everything, it is most likely in the middle. Chiros help people feel less pain, and without painkillers. That's a good thing.

As David Ortiz enters his final season, the Twins’ infamous decision to release the slugger in 2002 is revisited by Patrick Reusse of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.  Twins GM Terry Ryan took responsibility for the release, calling it “a very bad baseball decision. We thought we had better options. We were wrong in a big way.”  Ortiz is still dismayed about his treatment with the Twins organization, noting that the focus always seemed to be on his shortcomings rather than the positives he could bring in the form of his power bat.--MLBTR

The irony is, I said this then, and Brewers' fans that lived in MN insisted Ortiz wasn't any good. My favorite quote, which I still recall because it was so stupid, "All he does is hit doubles and home runs."

Yeah, yuck.

The other odd thing is that the Twins still build their team the same way (probably because it's still Terry Ryan and they are staunchly anti analytics)...they like contact, athletes, and don't care if their pitchers K anyone.

Watching a few minutes of Jordan McCabe of Kaukana, a top D1 recruit, still only a sophomore. Reminds me of Bronson Koenig...knows he's the best player on the court, totally at ease, in control, sort of just "above it all."

Loagn Schafer released by the Nats.

I assume he requested it, as he signed with DC before they signed Ben Revere, so any chance at sharing time with Mike Taylor was gone. Logan is so good in the field, he makes a solid reserve/platoon option even though he's never hit much in the majors.

3/19/2016 03:51:00 PM

(3/19/2016 01:08:00 PM) - Al

Al,

Wondering when you're going to take a guess at the roster the Brewers will take up north. I feel pretty good about 20-22 players right now.

Matt

No better time, I suppose.

SP--Jungmann, Garza, Nelson, Peralta, Anderson

Davies is the #6 in case of injury.

Bullpen--Jeffress, Smith, Blazek, Knebel, Thornburg, Nolin, Pena

Tyler, Sean, and Ariel are out of options (as is Jeremy, though that's in consequential as of now), so I have them getting first crack at it. Morales and Capuano are still in the mix, per Counsell, both are in on minor league deals, and Franklin has a late MAR opt out. Chris likely does too, or a handshake deal to let him go if someone wants him on the 25 or maybe even a 40 man.

Catchers--Lucroy, Maldonado

I've heard nothing to indicate otherwise, barring trade or injury. It will be interesting to see who is at AAA, as no other backstop has stepped forward at all.

Infield--Carter, Gennett, Villar, Hill, Walsh, Rivera

Starters seem certain, reserves are just a guess. Walsh looks as advertised, a good OBP guy, though with Scooter out, he has done little other than play 2B. A switch hitter with positional versatility seems a perfect fit, though at 26, that might be his ceiling too. Someone will platoon at 2B, most of the time at least.

Someone has to backup Villar at SS, so as of now, Rivera seems to hold that spot. Yadi has been a no hot/good field guy until the AFL, when a high BAbip led to stellar production. If the Crew still sees him as a backup, he might well hold that role. If they want him to play every day, splitting time mostly at 2B/3B (Arcia will play SS most of the time), he'll end up at Colorado Springs.

Other options include Wil Middlebrooks and Hernan Perez, both versatile and in on minor league deals.

Outfield--Braun, Santana, Flores, Liriano, Nieuwenhuis

All except the first two are out of options, so that's what I had in my head early and have kept. Broxton has played well and has looked very exciting. He is older (soon to be 26), so depending on how strongly they feel about the others, it might be a "now or never" scenario. Flores seems to be a nice fit, LH bat, able to play all 3 OF spots and back up 1B. Liriano has been driving the ball, but without numbers to back it up.

If you were going only for "fit," Peterson and Presley would be candidates too, but they lack the potential of the others.

One thing to keep in mind, the Brewers remain near the top of the waiver wire claim list, based on last year's record, until the end of April (after that, it is determined by 2016 record). They might well find a player worth claiming. If they decide that a player(s) without options are not worth the lack of roster versatility, they might remove them from the 40 in late March/early April, as dozens of players are in the process of being moved down then. That includes the Rule 5 picks of Walsh and Zack Jones (who appears DL bound to begin the season, along with Barrios).

Every March, the weather warms up, the birds return north, and Bob Huggins' teams underachieve, while playing dirty and stupidly.

Tonight they took their last timeout with 7:30 left in the game. I get it, they were behind and needed stoppages to try and overcome that, but...none? It's rare you see a team with none left before the 30 second mark, never mind 7:30. For good measure, throw in a technical foul with 3 minutes left, when West Virginia was down 9, all but taking them out of the contest.

Nice getting a coin flip win. If the Pitt player doesn't slam into his own teammate, might well have been a loss.

(3/18/2016 05:53:00 PM) - Al

George Marshall, Sam Dekker, Diamond Stone, and Jarrod Uthoff.

Add Marshall and Uthoff on last year's team, they probably win the title. Add all four to this year's team, we're not talking about "I hope we beat Pitt," the discussion would be on the final weekend.

Heck, it's not at all out of the realm of possibility we would be talking about a threepeat. No one ever questioned Bo's coaching, but whether he could recruit at a top level was often brought up. When one looks at the team on the court this season...and then considers the three who left early (even without Stone), I think that criticism looks rather tired.

Loves.

Sometimes the other team just plays better. In fact, that's what happens most of the time.

Also, rebounds are a direct correlation of team defense. If you hold the other team to 33% shooting, say 20 of 60, that's 40 defensive rebounds opportunities. If you're going to compare something, compare offensive rebounds, as that adds a possession you were not expected to have.

Sean Miller, coach of Arizona, has completely sweat through his dress shirt. Other than the "why do they wear a shirt and tie while coaching?" debate, some are curious as to why he chose not to wear an undershirt.

I never do either, for a simple reason. I'm always hot, and not surprisingly, adding an extra layer of clothing does little to alleviate that problem. And, as the halftime guys pointed out from an online comment, "An undershirt? That's like putting a cotton swab in the Hoover Dam."

Despite four NCAA games, I watched the 4th quarter of the Bucks' game versus Memphis, after switching it over to see the score. Kidd went with a lineup of Ennis, Vaughn, Inglis, Plumlee, and Henson for much of it, though I may have missed a sub or two. Memphis got upset toward the end, as noted thugs Lance Stephenson and Matt Barnes were both on the court and down 9-12 from about the 5 minute mark onward, and, not surprisingly, this led to poor behavior.

Marques and Gus kept reporting Barnes kept repeating the phrase, "After the game," which they took to be a threat of locker room violence. What it is is simple, a veteran blowhard still being too childish to admit he's far too old to fight, so implying he'll get around to it later...never mind the fact locker rooms are fortresses, with both cops and BC security keeping groupies, overzealous fans, and everyone not old media out.

I guarantee you if John Henson or any other player met Barnes by their bus after the game, he'd reply in the same way. That's what bullies do.

Well deserved tearing apart of the Panthers' debacle.

The funniest thing to me was one thing not mentioned, the AD did not allow the team to play in a pay to play postseason tournament in part of the $60K cost (mostly, it's just to diminish Jeter's real accomplishments). Today, she fired the coach, meaning she'll pay him about $500K not to coach next season. Instead they'll likely get some guy whose kids will not graduate, and 5th place will look like Everest.

3/17/2016 07:37:00 PM

(3/17/2016 06:10:00 PM) - Al

Counsell said he considered five spots accounted for in the bullpen: Will Smith, Jeremy Jeffress, Michael Blazek, Corey Knebel and Tyler Thornburg.--JS

Barrios is injured, and will miss the first part of the season, at least. Pena is out of options, as is Sean Nolin. Late signee Frankling Morales can opt out if not added to roster by 3/28. Capuano also "still in the mix." Counsell says he will keep 7 relievers.

My take? Pena and Nolin are heavy favorites, given their lack of flexibility.

Blazek has been horrible this spring, though he may be rehabbing or working on a pitch or a change in his motion.

The great thing about the Yale win is it will bring more attention to the inescapable anti heterosexual male policies that have been allowed to infiltrate our college campuses.

Without so much as an ounce of evidence, or the hint of a conviction, Yale suspended their basketball captain because a female student brought forth a complaint, and as is the case on most college campuses, guilt is assumed, because they know better.

The Rambling wife and I commented on how similar his injuries seem compared to Jewel's brother, who is a cast member of Alaska: The Last Frontier, who walked off a cliff while walking/hunting in the darkness last fall.

Rob Jeter out as Milwaukee's head coach after 11 years.

The AD there seems to be making decisions with tarot cards. The sad thing is, I can easily imagine them being in the lower levels of the Horizon for the better part of a decade as they recover from shortsighted decisions.

First game of the tourney, I'm already reminded of the one fact that is impossible to overlook this time of year...everyone hates Duke.

Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that the Brewers won’t name a closer before Opening Day. Manager Craig Counsell asserted that there’s “no such position as Opening Day closer” and said that left-hander Will Smith and right-hander Jeremy Jeffress will both get cracks at closing games early in the season. Counsell feels that it will behoove the Brewers to take advantage of having two quality late-inning relievers — one right-handed (Jeffress) and one left-handed (Smith) — to create the most advantageous matchups possible in attempting to lock down close victories. Counsell said the ninth inning could “eventually” belong to one pitcher, but he sees no reason to place any sort of restriction on either reliever right now.--MLBTR

I would assume they'll take turns, alternate, or try and use L/R matchups until one settles in.

That is a very unique looking building. Usually, when you have "fluff" added for appearance, it adds substantially to the cost. However, since the Bucks are paying the overage, more power to them.

2.5 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. Neighbor across the street had KTech sucking water out of her basement all morning, two trucks sitting out on the street. Two years ago, after the Badgers lost in the Final Four semifinal, the house next to that one had the same thing happen, they were still vacuuming at 2AM. It's switched over to snow now. Let's hope it continues.

Our sump pump has been running every 2-5 minutes since 5AM. That's about 1200 gallons by my guess...yes, that would make a mess, no doubt.

No matter how small the sample size, every year some guy manages to make the team because he did well against the opponent's minor league roster filler and players who are soon to be DFA'd.

That said, considering the backup infielder who can play SS spot was wide open coming into the spring (I might have made Hernan Perez the "favorite" even though he was on a minor league contract), Yadiel Rivera sure seems to have a handle on said spot, barring a trade/waiver wire pickup. Some might argue Yadi should be playing every day in AAA, but since his age and ceiling makes him a probable big league reserve anyway, that is what you call "correctly placed."

As I have said many times, winning in November is a far more important goal than having your favorite candidate get the nod.

If Trump was in 2nd or 3rd right now, losing to...heck, anyone, the GOP would be asking why he refuses to admit he had been defeated. Time to move on, they would say, time to join hands and keep Hillary out of the White House. Enough 3rd party talk. Heal the cracks in the party and let's move on...the people have spoken.

Yes. Yes it is that time. Accept the Reagan Democrats, moderates, independents, and all around open minded folks who have wandered into the fray to try and avoid the nutty socialist and the liar. Pull up a chair, and let's get to work.

Four years of the devil herself is the alternative.

His Trump vodka and steaks and eponymous schlock are a window into his narcissistic soul and his lack of concern with integrity; but I’ll say more about the size of his ego when he says he can cool the planet and lower the seas, and that he is the one we’ve all been waiting for — accompanied by Latin mottos and faux-Greek columns.

Read the whole thing. And wonder why it took so long for it to be said. Trump is far from a perfect candidate. So was Obama. I have often said Obama's complete lack of experience has rendered the experience question moot. Wait and see how uncomfy that will be if Trump is indeed the nominee.

Four years ago, the GOP yearned for a guy who did not cause the public to stifle yawns just by the mention of his name. One that maybe wasn't quite as associated with religion, to make sure those with little or no religious identity felt comfortable with the party. One that everyone did not think of as "same old, same old." And now, we have him...and they yearn for a return to...four years ago?

Seriously?

My thought? If he ain't Hillary, he's an improvement.

Amen.

It already exists, and it's called the GI Bill.

That's the stupidest thing a Dem candidate has said since Sanders said the first thing he would do is spend a trillion or so dollars on crumbling roads, bridges, and infrastructure...apparently forgetting Obama's $1T folly called "the stimulus" which did the exact same thing, with nary an iota of actual "stimulus."

How does it play in Peoria when they send protesters into a political rally and said protesters get pushed around?

Tough. Serves them right.

I wouldn't have to be a contrarian if the old media wasn't so out of touch.

Final thought? If Trump can't win...why has George Soros spent millions already on his anti Trump PAC? Shouldn't he be spending money ON Trump ads so he wins the GOP nomination so Hillary can destroy him?

A man and his family from the mountains travel into the city to pick up supplies. They live a simple life, and have no TV, and have no idea about modern conveniences. The man and his son go into a building to sit down and rest as the women in the family are off buying provisions. Soon, an elderly woman walks up to an elevator.

They are flabbergasted to see the wall open, the woman step into a tiny room, and the wall closes again. Then, a  few minutes later, they are shocked to see the doors open again, and a beautiful college aged woman step out of it.

The son looks at his dad and says, "Dad, what is that thing?" His dad replies, "Never mind now son...go find your mother."--Joel Osteen

Osteen does not claim to write his own material, so I assume that is someone else's joke...but it's funny.

Watching Outnumbered as I flip before watching the noon news. The gent, Brent Baier, on the panel just explained what a "brokered" or "contested" convention would look like. He said as long as Trump gets close to the magic number, he will easily get the nod. They asked what would happened if the GOP just ignored the numbers and named someone else as the nominee. Baier guessed the Trump people would just walk out, and you'd have a broken party, one way or another.

The one thing we've seen this election is the Dems are far more able to pinch their nose and accept a flawed candidate, many expressing their dislike of Hillary by voting for a nutty socialist, who is laughed at as math challenged every time he rolls out an actual idea or two (you could tax everyone at 100% and his programs are still unaffordable).

Trump gets a lot of those unhappy with their D choices, as proven by how poorly he does in closed primary states, and how many more voters have voted in the GOP primaries. Many insist that could not possibly carry over to the fall. Of course, many insisted it would not happen in the states, or those after IA and NH. I have seen and felt the anger. It's a result of eight years of a politically correct, do nothing administration, who refuse to admit terror, tax hikes, and welfare fraud exists; and that you're just too damn stupid to understand how much smarter they are than you.

Those wondering about how "presidential" Trump is are the same ones who voted for McCain and Romney, and wondered why so many others stayed home. Those that stayed home, love the fact they have someone who is not a cookie cutter. They hear the bullying, they hear the people calling them idiots...and they just smile and continue to vote for him.

No offense to the "he'll fall on his face, just give him plenty of leash" crowd...Trump has, in all likelihood, already won FL, as it allows early voting, and so few people work there, up to 75% have already voted.

Trump, who seems to be either off the charts lucky or simply several steps ahead of everyone else, is already in OH, seemingly knowing FL is in the bag. And, while he has won with about a third of the votes, the poll I just saw in FL had him close to 45%.

Rangers still have interest in adding Jonathan Lucroy, tweets FOX’s Ken Rosenthal, but they haven’t had recent discussions with the Brewers about the former All-Star catcher. The Astros and Athletics have also had some interest in Lucroy, Rosenthal notes. It’s rare but not unprecedented to see a player of Lucroy’s caliber dealt at this juncture of Spring Training; last year the Braves sent Craig Kimbrel to the Padres the night before Opening Day, for instance.--MLBTR

Teams would prefer to get a C now rather than in a week or two. If a trade occurs unrelated to an injury, we're likely to see it this week.
