Al's Ramblings

Now 4-2, 3.45 ERA in last 8 starts, has gone 5 or more innings in 7 of the 8.--Ramblings

Now down to a 2.45 ERA in his last 8, a 2-1 K/BB ratio, averaging 6.2 innings a start. As I have pointed out previously, he would have been the best SP on the market if his contract ended after this month, but instead he has a year to go, at $12M.

That's not out of line for a SP, but Garza will probably have to prove himself healthy in 2017, or the Crew will have to take some salary back or pay part of it to get done this offseason.

(8/31/2016 10:15:00 PM) - Al

Garza, last 7 starts: 3.85 ERA, has only went less than 5 innings once.

He's owed a lot of money for next year, but if he was at the end of his contract, he'd probably have several clubs trying to acquire him for SEP.--Ramblings 8/26

Now 4-2, 3.45 ERA in last 8 starts, has gone 5 or more innings in 7 of the 8.

I keep reading casuals insist the Crew should release him. As I said last week, if he was a FA at the end of the season, he'd have a dozen teams fighting over him at the AUG deadline to make a few starts for them down the stretch. The Crew would probably get a couple very fair prospects for him.

However, he is not a FA, he's owed a lot of money next season. Hence, he has limited value. However, should he get off to a good start next year, he might have real trade value next summer. All it takes to find out is a 40 man spot.

JS reports Guerra and Barnes will join team FRI, as will "one other player."

Other callups will wait until after minor league season concludes. They hope Susac is healthy enough to be brought up, he will attempt to play in the Sky Sox last series of the season.

Since there is an open spot on the 40, that last player could be anyone...and maybe the team has not even decided, who knows? Since Elmore and Perez can play anywhere, they are not really "short" on any given position, so it's truly a mystery.

Since Guerra will be added to the rotation, and Barnes will be limited to an inning at most, it could be a pitcher or a position player. My guess is about as boring as it gets...they do not have any LH pop on the bench, so I'll go with Andy Wilkins.

EDIT: And if Wilkins is not added, he is probably a good candidate to be taken off the 40, due to his low ceiling, as he is what he is at this point.

Dictionary definition of a minor trade...Brewers give veteran that they had no use for a chance with a team that looks to use him in their playoff run, most likely as a PR.

Jeffress not suspended, but will enter in patient rehab.

Also puts out barely readable statement, misspells "well being" twice.

The fact he pays his agent and gets nothing in return is deplorable.

EDIT: It has come to my attention maybe he is just following the Ramblings example of "hyphens are stupid" and is just not going to use them as a protest. If so, more power to him.

AZ Fall League participants: Tayler Scott, Tyler Spurlin, Josh Uhen, Jacob Nottingham, Isan Diaz, Brett Phillips.--MLB.com

Three top position prospects, and 3 little known pitching prospects. I'm sure they ran into quite a few innings limitations. Scott was signed from an indy league, so huge jump in competition for him; Uhen was a pick from UW Milwaukee, back when they decided to take guys with good velocity with "fresh arms." Spurlin was signed as an undrafted FA out of Rice, so he has already blown away all expectations.

Kerry thinks the old media focuses too much on terrorism.

This is the same old media that ignored Obama's "workplace violence" quote for...well, they're still ignoring it. The only way they could ignore terror more is if they ignored a candidate's plethora of lies about abandoning an embassy and classified emails...never mind.

On my Facebook feed, one of my HS classmates posted a picture of her daughter (who is either 16, 17, or 18) and her friends in sport bras and tiny shorts.

My God, if I posted a pic of Hooters wait staff in that attire, I'd have to deal with false reports to Blogger (Google) of nudity, that I was demeaning to women, and most of all, that I was a sexist, horrible pig.

And that's just from the guys who don't really care, but have infant daughters or are terrified of their wives.

Christian Yelich just slugged his 16th homer of the season. He had 16 homers combined in 1,185 plate appearances from 2014-2015.--DJ Short

A good predictor of future HR power is a lot of doubles, as power often comes after most other skills, often 24-25. That's why I always giggle when casuals complain a 19 year old is just a slap hitter because they only have 8 HR's...often, the league leader only has 15 at those low levels.

LSU is a 10+ point favorite, and is ranked 5th in the nation, compared to the Badgers being unranked (which means, 26th or lower). Still, most Badgers' fans seem confident of either a victory or close defeat.

Someone should do an in depth study of how fandom makes people incredibly ignorant or "above" the facts. Even though they are aware of them, they act as if they do not pay attention, they are moot.

I barely follow college football, though I do enjoy many games, as I usually treat them as many do a tennis match, I begin by simply hoping for a close, contested game, and then usually root for the underdog late (or the uniforms I like better, or in the case of tennis, the prettier gal). The goofiest thing is, consistently in football, if a team loses 31-27 and even if the opponent returned an interception for a TD, folks blame the defense (well, they gave up 24 points, the offense "only" 7).

(8/30/2016 04:59:00 PM) - Al

Al,

When you get a chance, could you explain as simply and easily as you can what exactly the 25 man roster is, the 40 man roster is, and who has to be added to each. I respect your ability to take an issue, like abortion, and say you feel a good compromise is to limit abortion after the fetus is viable. We could use a lot more compromise. All I know is you have to be on the 40 if you are on the 25, and some minor leaguers are on the 40, but most are not. I also know if you are removed from the 40, you often have to go through waivers, though not always. Thank you, love the Brewers stuff and the other items. Wish you wrote on the Packers, I dread every Monday because all I see is "Rodgers sucks" and "fire McCarthy" posts. And that's if they win.

Chuck

There is no simple or easy way of doing this, but Chuck is right, you are on the 40 if you are on the 25, but if you're on the 40, you are not necessarily on the 25, which makes sense, as 40 is more than 25. I'll try to make this post before 9/1 rolls around, though teams with THU off are unlikely to add players until FRI.

Do not forget...the only reason anyone is in prison is for violent acts or for selling drugs. I do not want either on the streets, because they are both thugs and scum of the planet.

No one is in prison for smoking a joint or for being a drug user. They're in prison for trying to sell poison to people, mostly addicts and many very young, in the prime of their life.

I have no sympathy for any of them, and cannot understand the president's agenda that includes allowing them to mingle with the general public as if they wrote a bad check for Chinese food or pawned their ex's DVR for beer money.

Do not forget, I'm a relaxed libertarian on almost all social issues...I am all for freedom. If you want to use drugs, pay for a prostitute, or most anything that involves two consenting adults, I have no problem with it...the government does not need to intrude on morality, especially when one of the people in the government is Hillary "Oops, I did it again" Clinton.

I have never done a drug in my life, and I won't start tomorrow if they are suddenly legalized. However, profiting by breaking the law and taking advantage of others...no patience for it. Don't like the law? Get rid of it. If I were made king I'd probably commute a few sentences myself, but it sure would be done carefully and in tiny amounts.

(8/30/2016 04:33:00 PM) - Al

Lots of speculation that the Crew claimed Puig and the teams will discuss a trade involving Braun (who has cleared waivers) and Puig plus prospects.

I suppose it makes some sense, but as I have said many times, Ryan and the team are close, I do not see him going anywhere, barring an overpay. MIL has said on several occasions they will only make a "baseball value trade" involving Ryan, meaning no discount for his large salary, age, or past PED result.

And, to be blunt, MIL has a very low payroll with Braun, so they do not need to move him for financial reasons. They are going to draw 2.35-2.4M, barely down from last year. The radio and TV money will be the same, and if anything, revenue sharing should be up. They are limited as to what they can spend on international free agents.

8/30/2016 04:33:00 PM

(8/30/2016 04:20:00 PM) - Al

Some team hoping the Dodgers just are tired of him and will let him go for nothing.

I tend to hearken back to when the Crew had a young Gary Sheffield and they literally did every stupid, shortsighted thing they could to stifle his development; rushing him, changing positions with no warning or time to learn it, bouncing him up and down for off field reasons, and then ignoring similar issues at AAA, and finally giving up on a very young player with plus numbers and getting little back in return for a future Hall of Famer.

The Twins do this all the time, criticize them in the old media, and then sell low, and are always surprised they flourish elsewhere. They nontendered Dave Ortiz back when he could still run because "all he did was hit for power," implying the lack of "little things" in his repertoire.

Remarkably, the Red Sox overlooked those faults for a decade and a half.

8/30/2016 04:20:00 PM

(8/30/2016 04:07:00 PM) - Al

I wonder who the least attractive pro tennis player is. My next thought is they're still extremely good looking compared to the general public. The woman currently getting manhandled by Venus looks like she stepped off the runway this morning, took a train to Flushing, and is masquerading as a tennis player just because she can.

The vast majority are blonde, part of the former Soviet bloc, and have longer legs than the Rambling wife is tall. It's kind of sad really, if you're the 100th best baseball player, you're probably Ryan Braun or Jon Lucroy. If you're the 100th best tennis player, of either gender, your expenses are as high or higher than your income and you struggle to keep playing. And despite being gorgeous, no one has ever heard of you.

The late David Foster Wallace once wrote a piece on the challenger tour, which is like AAA for tennis, and one expert told him the difference was those players would hit the ball within a couple feet of the lines, where as the top players could usually put it within six inches.

He said watching them play, it was difficult to believe he was not watching the top two players in the world, and later found out neither was ranked in the top 120.

8/30/2016 04:07:00 PM

(8/30/2016 03:40:00 PM) - Al

Tebow rated above average in speed and power, below average in arm, field, and overall hit tool.

On the 80 point scale, he looks to be a 40 or 45, meaning he would be outside the Crew's top 30...though he would be on many clubs' list. Of course, he's 29, and not going to develop physically anymore, and he's being compared to mostly 18-25 year olds.

Since his best skill is power, he could get a look. Teams might have to decide if the sideshow atmosphere at minor league spring training and at whatever affiliate he ends up at is worth it for such a longshot who is pushing 30.

Remember the line from The Rookie, when the scout told him he was going to get laughed at for turning in a scouting report for a 37 year old, but the alternative was to get fired for not turning in a form on a guy throwing 97.

It takes one scout and one team. They sign kids from Latin America who barely know how to hold a bat because they run really fast, but they are just over half Tebow's age and the team in question can hide in anonymity.

(8/30/2016 03:40:00 PM) - Al

Middlebrooks removed from 40, outrighted to Colorado Springs. There's one 40 man spot opened up, probably 2-3 more to follow.

Hader and Brinson are two players who have to be added to the 40 this offseason, but do not currently possess a spot.

I'm sure they told Will they will gladly give him to any team wanting to put him on the 40, but since he already cleared waivers, not very likely.

Back from rehab on 9/1--Guerra, Barnes, Middlebrooks

Any other additions to the major league roster before the minor league season ends 9/5? I would assume an extra arm, but probably just one, so my guess would be Magnifico. I would guess one more position player as well.

Home plate umpire batting about .500 tonight, and now they miss a rather obvious foul ball off Scooter's foot.

I'm telling you, seriously, how much worse could 4 guys off the street be?

Of course, no matter how bad they are, they'll still be back, drawing huge salaries. Why bother?

(8/29/2016 08:58:00 PM) - Al

Funny, no complaints from the casuals that the "contact play" was on when Gennett hit his ground ball to 1B that Carpenter was unable to glove and Santana scored.

No way the runner scores if he waits. It is simply good baseball to be aggressive and make the defensive team make the play. Often they do, but sometimes, they do not.

Casuals dwell on the negative. They dwell on what players cannot do, never understanding a team made up solely of average personnel will win about 81 times. I think everyone would love to have a team made up of Mike Trouts, 5 tool guys that have little in the way of weaknesses. Not many of those around.

I remind folks of this every year, but the US Open begins today, and is on ESPN or ESPN2 most every day from 11AM until 10/11PM, or sometimes even later. It is the best tennis on the planet, and when there is a good match, especially late at night, it reminds you of how good sports can be.

I don't know many of the players anymore, but it's still very enjoyable. The money involved is life changing...just making the 2nd round is worth $77K, which is enough to keep many players in the sport another year. The effort, even in 1st round matches, is off the charts.

Brinson has been on fire since being acquired, but he has only walked twice and has a .449 BAbip, which is both unsustainable and ridiculous.

Let me state the obvious...he ain't that good. Luckily, he doesn't have to be.

(8/29/2016 11:00:00 AM) - Al

The thing that gives me hope for a guy like Keon Broxton is, while no one has even noticed he is 1 for his last 20, he has still managed to walk 5 times in that span.

Most of us realized the hullabaloo about his "new stance" with his hands an inch or three lower was, at best, unimportant (some guys make adjustments every PA, and his numbers at AAA were consistent from day one...his major league time has been mostly BAbip related noise, made far more apparent by limited playing time).

In any normal industry, certainly any one in which the free market is given even lip service, these factors would signal producers about the need to change:

"Shit. We made too many widgets, and people aren't buying them even at the lower prices we're forced to charge because we made too many widgets? Well, it's time to make fewer widgets, or diversify, or innovate, or all of the above."

"If there wasn't this federal government intervention in the first place that distorts production decisions," says Bakst, "price signals would inform farmers whether to produce more or less of a commodity, which would help to address overproduction."

Who got taxpayers, consumers, and farmers into this mess? Congress, the USDA, many farmers, and the big farm lobbies are all to blame.

More importantly, who can get us out of this mess? Expecting those same farm lobbies, Congress, and USDA bureaucrats to break the wheel is a fool's errand.--Reason

Supply and demand is just as important for cheese as it is every other product, as you can read the whole thing at the link.

Welfare by any other name, is extremely shortsighted and always makes the problem worse. Last time I checked, they've spent $18B on "the war on poverty" (almost identical to our national deficit, go figure) and the poverty rate is identical to where it was before it began.

There's a lesson to be learned there, if only President McGolf cared about anything other than kicking the can down the road and making statements that we'll be using to giggle at his ineptness in 20 years.

Barnes and Middlebrooks are also on rehab, and if they stay healthy, will also likely be activated on 9/1. Other additions will probably wait until the minor league season ends on Labor Day.

It's ironic, I just saw casuals say they should put Blazek on the 60 day DL, you know, so they could use his 40 man spot on magic beans. Some folks just love living on the always wrong brigade.

The irony? These are the same "experts" that are insisting we have climate change, even though they can't agree if it's getting warmer or colder.

I was just reading the other day that folks were arguing that modern "climate change" began in the 1830's...despite the fact it is an accepted fact that the last mini ice age did not end until the 1850-1870 range. Unsurprisingly, they took the last decades of a cooling cycle, combined it with the inevitable warmth that followed, and in effect, created an extra century of "change" to make themselves seem more important.

The truth is, climate is always changing...that's why we have had several ice ages, some lasting centuries. Someday, we'll have another one, and all the aerosol cans in the world ain't going to help a bit.

Orioles outfielder Adam Jones left tonight’s action with what the team is calling a hamstring strain. That could be a big problem for the O’s, who not only need Jones’s bat in the lineup but don’t have any ready replacements on their depth chart. But skipper Buck Showalter says that he doesn’t believe Jones will require a DL stint, as Dan Connolly of BaltimoreBaseball.com tweets.--MLBTR

Nieuwenhuis would be a near perfect fit for the O's, as he could play CF a few games while Jones is out and then settle in as a bench/reserve player, and maybe play the 9th inning as a defensive replacement for Trumbo.

Allow me to put this into words most folks will understand...AJ Ellis is not very good, and Carlos Ruiz, while just mediocre, is a far better player. These are the types of trades contenders make.

Is Ellis a nice guy? Probably. Does anyone care? No.

Folks in Texas right now are not complaining Jeffress is a drunk and has made poor choices; they're upset he's going to miss some time. There are a few players I'd rather lose without than win with, but that's a mighty short list...in fact, Dennis Rodman is the only one I can think of offhand. Many higher than thou folks point fingers at Chapman and KRod, but forget they've never been convicted of anything. BUMPED: More info added at bottom.

Jeffress charged with DWI in Dallas.

Of course, Jeremy has a history of poor decision making, though some wrote that off because he claimed he used due to his epilepsy. Of course, I'm sure dozens of baseball players share his penchant for alcohol and nonsense; and were just more fortunate not to get caught.

ADDED:  Peed on himself twice, marijuana found in glove compartment.

That is not just having an extra glass of wine. That's "I'm not officer drunk" behavior. That's "maybe he should check into a facility" territory. It also makes one wonder if the reason he is now "clean" is that he has not been tested in years.

The first thing I think of when I see this move is how valuable Drew Stubbs could be to a contender. Stubbs does 2-3 things very well...hit LHP, and runs really fast, which makes him an excellent base stealer/runner as well as a plus defender. On a playoff team, he could be invaluable as a PR when the game is tied or down a run, as he is successful stealing a base 83% of the time...that's about as good as it gets, as Billy Hamilton is 82%. Anything over 80% usually means it takes a good pitcher/combo to have a chance at them.

All that said, as long as the stadium in Vegas is safe and does not have holes on the field, it'd be far better than Colorado Springs, where breaking balls, for the most part, do not break; which makes it difficult for pitchers to pitch AND for hitters to hit them when they leave altitude.

Casuals gonna be casual. If you take a gander, those judging Arcia on a small sample are the same ones who insisted Keon Broxton was awful. In truth, every player in MLB has had bad stretches lasting far longer than 100 PA's.

Now in Arcia's case, as a 22 year old defensive whiz who put up passable, but not great numbers in AA and AAA; I would have been shocked had he come up and did well offensively.

Guerra to AAA for rehab, Barnes to AA. As I said last night, Middlebrooks to Appleton, and then likely elsewhere. I assume they will then be activated after 9/1.

(8/23/2016 08:21:00 PM) - Al

Middlebrooks headed to Appleton for a couple games of rehab starting tomorrow, per Adam.

My guess is he will then go somewhere else, Boloxi or more likely Colorado Springs, until rosters expand on 9/1.

The Crew could add several players from the DL on or after 9/1...Middlebrooks, Guerra, and Barnes, if they continue to progress. Blazek is not expected to pitch again this season. Mike could easily be placed on the 60 day DL if they wanted to painlessly open another roster 40 man spot.

If all 3 are healthy and ready, they might be the only players added until after the minor league campaign ends on Labor Day.

I have not guessed or predicted yet, and it will be interesting to see if Jungmann returns, as for the most part, he has been dominant in AA for the past month. The other 2 interesting choices will be guys who have to be added to the 40 this offseason, the newly acquired Lewis Brinson and hard throwing lefty Josh Hader.

I would assume they would bring up Andrew Susac, if he has recovered from the injury who is on the 40 and who came over from SF in the Will Smith swap, but not only is Jake Elmore a former catcher, Hernan Perez can also put on the gear if an emergency arises, so a 3rd catcher is more of a luxury than a need.

Aaron Gleeman (who thinks he blocked me on Twitter, but never mind that for now) made fun of a hotel for putting instructions on how to use the microwave in their room guide.

Some microwaves are downright difficult to use, or at least, out of the ordinary. At my old office, no one could ever figure it out the first time they used it (if memory serves, you hit "cook time" then "minutes" then "seconds" and then "cook time" again. It was a double whammy, as no one ever knew they had to hit "cook time" again, so they'd try and find the "start" button which did not exist. Also, if you wanted 30 seconds, you had to hit 0-3-0, so many were freaked out by that. We had new people every meeting to "check us out" and I always made sure I was there to help the attractive new females that were stumped.

The guys? Yeah, the hell with them. I never aspired to concern myself if their food/drink was heated to the manufacturer's recommended guidelines or not.

(8/22/2016 11:34:00 PM) - Al

Brewers left-hander Chris Capuano isn’t likely to return to the team in 2016, GM David Stearns tells Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The 38-year-old has been sidelined by an elbow injury since late May, and a platelet-rich plasma treatment hasn’t sped along his recovery as much as had been hoped. Stearns notes that Capuano “is still very motivated to make it back and continue his career,” so it sounds as if there’s a good chance he’ll aim to return in 2017 if he can’t do so at the tail end of the present season.

Another Brewers southpaw, Sean Nolin, recently underwent Tommy John surgery after trying to stave off the procedure, Haudricourt further reports. He, too, tried a PRP treatment but did not improve enough to avoid a UCL replacement. Milwaukee outfielder Rymer Liriano, meanwhile, has faced slow going after being struck by a pitch in the face this spring. Though he has now begun baseball activities, Liriano won’t be able to make it to the majors this year. Instead, says Stearns, he may be able to participate in fall instructional league action.--MLBTR

I assume Capuano and Nolin will not be signed to major league deals, though Capuano could be brought back on a minor league contract. The Crew is responsible for Nolin's rehab, and paid him about $500K this season, so I would think they would keep in touch and go from there.

As for Liriano, it will probably depend on if they have 40 man space and to be blunt, if they like him to keep him on the 40 all offseason. They paid him to sit all season too, half a mil and a year of service time.

This is exactly what you do if you have health problems. It's difficult to believe her team is this stupid to not realize that.

For instance, what would they do if someone accused her of cheating on Bill? She'd ignore it, because, of course, there's no evidence of said behavior.

The mere fact she feels the need to insist she's healthy, despite needing help up stairs, leaning on tables, and wearing winter attire in summer; tells me she knows she's not fooling anyone.

Two Cal League minor league teams will cease to exist after the season, and two Carolina League teams will be added next year.

While I can't say I particularly care, it may well affect the Brewers' high A affiliate. Right now they are partnered with Brevard County in the Florida State League, but BC is moving to Kissimmee, and usually when a team moves into better facilities, they have their choice of teams.

While the Crew would prefer a more neutral AAA environment that Colorado Springs, they have the opposite problem in Brevard, every pitcher looks like a star and every hitter a flop. While most persevere, often, bad habits can develop.

Keon Broxton is bad at baseball.

Keon Broxton should spell his first name with a backwards K

Keon has no clue what's going on at the plate right now.

Quotes from message boards about the Crew's CF...every single statement was before Keon had 71 PA's...remember earlier this year, when Stearns said they try not to overreact to tiny samples of a couple hundred AB's? Many would be wise to adopt that policy.

Of course, when your history includes such memorable remarks as "Braun has a hitch in his swing," and "Hart will never hit, he holds his elbow too high," it's par for the course.

And you know the irony? They still make blanket, incredibly stupid statements every single day. And then wonder why no one gives them an ounce of respect.

Stearns says he will continue to listen to teams as they ask for Braun (as he would any player; and LaRussa shows he out of it he is by defending the Shelby Miller trade, which was universally panned far before Miller was ineffective.

Again, Stewart and LaRussa simply do not seem to understand anything about player values, or prospect values at all. Both appear to be well over their heads and uninterested in anything except a quick fix. Of course, if it were that easy, every team would do it.

58% of K-12 schools will be on break Friday, which is down from the 77% off at the same point in time last weekend. By Friday, Aug. 26, only 36% of K-12.

It seems strange to me, as school starts the first week of SEP here now, but when I was a school boy, we'd start around AUG 20/21/22. Some of those days were really, really hot...although many climate scareologists insist it was always 75 degrees with a cool breeze until the late 80's...

I've long argued they should start the WED after Labor Day and finish the WED/THU after Memorial Day. Some years, that would leave them a hair short of the state required 180 days, with vacations as they are now at least, and my response to that is...so? Given the numerous field trips, in service days, track and field days, movie days, and the like, they cut easily lose a few days of chaff and the harvest would be unaffected.

Ain't no kid learning much of anything after the first of May. It's about time we realize it.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said he hopes Flores stays in the organization but admitted that the 24-year-old, who played all three outfield positions and first base and slashed .205/.294/.261 in 249 at-bats with the Brewers this year, scuffled at the big league level.

"Ramon had a good chance to play," Counsell said. "In May and June, he was playing quite a bit. He never quite got going. I think there's a talented hitter in there, but he just never got going this year, for whatever reason."--MLB.com

Flores had a .254 BAbip, meaning it would have been very difficult for him to have success, just like it was Jon Broxton last season allowing a .370ish BAbip. It's a luck stat, so I would expect his numbers to improve.

If Flores does pass through waivers unclaimed, he will be a minor league free agent at the end of the season, as he has been in baseball for 7 or more seasons. As I said yesterday, this is directly related to 40 man roster considerations. Also, Flores' lack of options made it impossible to flip flop him if they need a pitcher, or to send him down to get PA's.

As I have pointed out a couple times, this is not a normal farm system. They are loaded, and this is probably the first of several players I'll hate losing. Stearns has been adding talent that does not need to be added to the 40 because he is aware of the crowded nature. No use adding a player he may lose this offseason.

Especially concerned that lefties hit both HR's, and he walked several. For those of us who saw his ceiling as either a middle reliever or loogy, that now appears doubtful. Smart guys like that take advantage of the far larger strike zone in AAA, and since he struck out so few at that level, he's always going to give up bloopers and cheap hits.

ECON101 lesson for today...why big screen TV's are getting cheaper; why health care is getting more expensive.

Short answer? It is in the company's best interest to sell as many TV's as possible, so it is in their best interest to be as efficient as possible.

It is not in a health care provider's best interest to sell cheap health care, because insurers pay huge amounts for basic medical care.

Obamacare did the unthinkable...the public now has worse coverage that they are paying far more for, as well as paying higher deductibles, because insurers are forced to treat every individual as if they are unhealthy. Since health care providers are reimbursed at lower rates; they have been forced to, wait for it, raise their rates for those covered by private insurance, which has raised the price for companies and individuals.

Never forget, Obamacare passed without a single GOP vote in the House or the Senate. That's why it was particularly funny to hear Obama blame Republicans for its high cost and coverage gaps...it's almost as if they never really thought it out.

*cough*

Crew activates Santana, DFA's Flores.

I like Flores for what he is,  probably have a nice career as a reserve/platoon OFand since he has not been outrighted before, the Crew can send him down...if he is not claimed by another team, who would have to find both a 25 and 40 man spot for him...though it'll only a couple days until 9/1, when rosters expand, if it takes the whole 10 days.

Since it is happening this late in the campaign, I have to believe Stearns did not feel he had a 40 man spot for Flores this offseason, or he would have found a way to delay a move like this for 12 days.

Barring a setback, Chase Anderson will pitch out of the bullpen this weekend and then start next TUE/WED.

No announcement yet on whose place Suter will take, but all fingers point to a reliever with options. Suter's stay expected to be very brief, possibly only tonight, as they look to maximize the roster. If Brent goes 6 innings, they might bring up a position player, if he goes 2+, probably another arm.

Oswaldo Arcia DFA'd again, despite solid production.

Eight AL teams have a lower OPS from their DH than Arcia's 2016 numbers.

2016------------772 OPS
career-----------734
career vs. RHP--786

Despite all the emphasis on math and analytics, a number of teams still insist at looking at what a player cannot do instead of how he can help them win. I get it, he's a below average defender, and he does not LHP much. So? Play him in LF when there's a RHP on the mound, or even better, a RH sinkerballer. And you don't even need to worry about defense as a DH. TEX and HOU are both contending and have a sub 700 OPS from their DH's.

Is it too little too late?

Most of us know this is just optics, but most of us know who we're going to vote for, and have known for months. To an undecided voter, that 20% or so of the electorate that most of us wouldn't trust to pet sit for a weekend, it might nudge some to the right.

I must admit, the headline "Trump and Pence visit flood ravaged Louisiana while Hillary rests and Obama golfs," made me chuckle this morning. The real irony here is how several folks are saying, well, it'd be a pain for police and such if Obama showed up, but maybe he should just get in a plane with some pencil pushers and fly over...the exact thing W did and was torn apart for.

It doesn't matter what you do, it only matters if the old media has your back. W ignored them and was a leader for 8 years; Obama does not make a move without okaying it with them, and his complete lack of leadership is just as glaring.

It wasn't a "ransom," it was "leverage." It wasn't a tax increase, it was a revenue enhancement.

Counsell said they chose Suter over Hader simply because he's earned it.

I would say they also figure it's more likely Suter will not have a 1-3 inning disaster, though he's far less likely to have a 6 inning, no run start as well. And, it could be an innings issue with Josh, as he has almost matched his IP from last season, and might pick up several starts in SEP.

8/18/2016 05:31:00 PM

(8/18/2016 05:23:00 PM) - Al

Many are pointing out Suter will be the first LHSP for the Crew since Tom Gorzelanny in August/2013.

Not sure what the fascination is with that, as they don't even have a lefty in the bullpen right now (and have a very good bullpen corps, by the way), but in the world of full disclosure, there you go.

8/18/2016 05:23:00 PM

(8/18/2016 05:18:00 PM) - Al

The Brewers go with the soft tossing lefty, Brent Suter. No word yet on whose place he will take on the 25 man or the 40 man, as the Crew will have to open a spot on each.

Brent will have to be protected on the 40 man this offseason or else he will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft. As I have pointed out numerous times, very few pitchers have success while not striking out many hitters (5.8/9 IP). Blaine Boyer has this season, and he's done so by leading the majors in the lowest exit velocity. Suter will probable have to have similar results to have success.

He may be a good fit for Safeco though, and that may be why he was the choice. They also may want to get a look at him against major league hitters to decide if he's worth protecting, though now, he would be a lot easier for another team to pilfer, as they would only need a 40 man roster spot if he is taken off this winter. That said, considering his AAA numbers and the fact he'll have 3 options, he may well have guaranteed himself remaining on the 40 man until at least next spring.

I went to little neighborhood grocery yesterday to pick up a few items...if you buy stuff on sale, it's not bad, but there regular price on most stuff is 50% more than Wal Mart, so we limit our purchases there to convenience.

They have about a 16 foot selection of bread, and I usually buy the dark rye pumpernickel. But, they were all out, so after thinking of driving elsewhere, I sighed and just decided to buy another type, as I was already there. After I pondered buying wheat or "brown bread," I settled on a loaf of cinnamon, without raisins. I've never made a sandwich out of it, the Rambling parents would often buy a loaf with or without raisins and just have it as a snack, or maybe even as dessert.

I just opened it, and it adds some nice sweetness to a normally bland sandwich. Still prefer the rye, but cinnamon is an undervalued choice, without a doubt.

Adam reports it will be a call up starting FRI game in SEA, with Peralta going SAT. Heavy favorite would be Hader, though Jungmann possible, as he is scheduled to start tonight in AA, so we'll seemingly know then, if not before.

Brent Suter has pitched well at AAA, but was rocked his last time out.

Schroeder just said on the Cubs' broadcast that MIL "will probably have to make a move after today's game," as they will need a SP for SAT if Chase Anderson is not able to go. The TV guys often know far more than they let on, so I would say an arm is probably already on the way to meet the team in SEA.

If they go with a starter, Josh Hader will almost surely get the call, which will also require a 40 man spot to be opened up. I would not be at all hesitant just to let Marinez start, go 2-4 frames, and bring up a reliever...Ben Rowen would be my guess. Rowen has thrown 3 scoreless outings for the Sky Sox, though only one at altitude, with a 3-1 ground out to fly out ratio.

Not sure if Anderson will be DL'd or not, Bill mentioned he might to the bullpen if he has to miss a start. If Cravy or Magnifico go again today, they will probably be the guy being sent down, having worked 3 days in a row.

Alex Presley back in the bigs with DET. He's a nice 4th OF, as he can play all 3 spots (weak in CF), hits LHP at a nice clip for a lefty, and gets on base at a decent clip.

As I often mention, the difference between a bench player and a veteran AAA guy is often very minimal, pretty much just opportunity.

As I have discussed, I have had a bad back from time to time for years. Therefore, I recognize someone struggling physically...though I've never have had to utilize something at nearly all times like Hillary did.

Also, notice how Biden acts like a school child as he jogs in, talking to the lady who now lives there...knowing the situation, almost certainly a planned move to have the camera follow him and allow Clinton to hobble behind him.

I'm sure her campaign thinks this will make her look old (she already does, so) and weak, but they're missing out on a chance to be honest and to quite possibly gain sympathy. She certainly has some sort of physical ailment, be it her back, leg, or balance related. A simple "she has a kink in her back" would set aside the constant mentions of her struggles, just as the McCain camp did by reminding folks he was tortured for 5 years as a POW, and still had issues from years prior.

By ignoring it, they are making it the 800 pound gorilla in the room...impossible not to notice and talk about.

One thing I had not thought about was the possibility of Guerra returning to pitch SAT. Not sure if he's ready, but he would be eligible to come off the DL if he is.

Cravy is kept up, Wilkins sent down.

Torres did not pitch last night, even though Thornburg and Knebel did, so given Counsell's usage patterns, that seemed a bit strange. No idea if Carlos is banged up or not, but it would not be surprising if he's not 100%.

EDIT: This would seemingly be a prelude to calling up Hader or another SP for FRI or SAT...they could replace the 13th pitcher and after the game, go back down and be replaced with another player.

This is assuming Anderson can make his next start, of course.

I did not mention it in the analytics night review, but one thing I would do if I were a GM is compile a list of players who "made it" later in their career, perhaps after 27, and/or guys who made it despite being "roster filler" early in their pro experience.

After compiling such a list, I would go back and see what they all had in common in the low minors...or more likely, which traits did many or most of them have in common.

To be truthful, I assume this has already been done numerous times, but the results, if any consistency was found, have never been shared.

You don't realize how good these guys are pitching until Scahill misses his location with a couple pitches and just like that, it's 4-0.

Rob has already used his option for this season, so he might well be on the hot seat, despite being plenty solid before tonight.

EDIT: The fact Scahill is out for a 2nd inning makes the above even more likely.

CORRECTION: Knebel is on to pitch, Scahill only goes a single frame. That said, KNEBEL looks a lot like SCAHILL if you just glance at it.

The Crew may have to make a quicker decision than they'd like on Braun or Anderson, as it will be tough playing with 22 guys for a couple days.

{I get 22 by removing Ryan and Chase, and that Jhan will be unable to go until at least FRI, and SAT would be better.}

That's assuming, of course, both are minor, or relatively minor injuries. I'm going on 4 months with my sore knee, and while it's better, it still hurts, and still really stiffens up, mostly in the car. Of course, I'm not a top athlete with a top training staff either.

That review went in the Crew's favor, took 4 minutes, and I'm still embarrassed by it. I thought he was safe at full speed, and on the replay, it was rather obvious.

Frame by frame, the runner's hand was on the plate for several frames before Maldy's tag hit him. Some calls are so bad, I truly wonder if the old fogies in the review center don't understand how to run the equipment.

BA and Rock are correct, that 90 second limit they've been suggesting is plenty of time. The thing is, they still get them wrong with an unlimited amount, so why not keep the game flowing?

8/16/2016 08:51:00 PM

(8/16/2016 07:25:00 PM) - Al

If Anderson has to be DL'd, Cravy might be sent down...and then brought right back. I believe the "10 day rule" applies even for the 26th man, that he cannot be brought back unless someone ends up on the DL.

So, if the Crew wanted to send down a position player, for example, and then bring back Cravy, they would have to wait 10 days after he is optioned back after the 2nd game. A DL move renders that moot.

I think...

  1. The "26th man" does not have to be a pitcher.
  2. In the case of a doubleheader that is scheduled at least 48 hours in advance, the 26-man Active List limit is in effect for both games of the doubleheader, but the "26th man" cannot be switched between games.
  3. A player can be added to a club's Active List as the "26th man" even if he has not spent the minimum required 10 days on optional or outright assignment prior to being added.
  4. The player who was recalled as the "26th man" can remain on the Active List and a different player can be dropped the next day, as long as the "26th man" was not called up prior to spending at least ten days on optional assignment. NOTE: A player called up as the "26th man" prior to spending at least ten days on Optional Assignment could remain on the 25-man roster if the player replaces a player who is placed on the Disabled List (or other MLB inactive list) the day after the doubleheader.
  5. If a player is recalled as the "26th man" and is optioned back to the minors the next day, the "10-day rule" clock (prohibiting a player from being recalled until he has spent at least ten days on Optional Assignment, unless he is replacing a player who is placed on the DL or other MLB inactive list) does not start over again. However many days toward ten that the player spent on Optional Assignment prior to being recalled as the "26th man" counts.

I'm not sure a mob lawyer could tell you what exactly that means. Hopefully, Chase is just sore tomorrow and he'll be fine to make his next start.

Chapman is certainly beatable (no pun intended), but he's going to have success most games based solely on throwing the ball so darn hard.

Didn't hear a lot of concern for his off field activities when he was greeted by a loud ovation. Of course, he's never been convicted of anything, so the ire would be better spent on those who have.

The Brewers had a get together at Miller Park last night for season ticket holders in which they talked about their analytical department and what they are looking for.

They mentioned several of the same concepts I have discussed here on occasion, such as the importance of OBP and how 10 runs scored or prevented equals 1 run.

One interesting note was that they quit putting BA on the scoreboard because it's so meaningless...they replaced it with OPS. I was only about a decade ahead of them on that. :)

Later, I will put up some of the tweets about it, if they still exist.

Magnifico in, see what the radar gun says. 97 on the first offering.

85 mph breaking ball that doesn't do much. Good thing he throws 95+.

Overthrowing everything thus far. Needs to trust his stuff.

He's a guy who would never get through waivers, as every team looks to pick up guys who throw that hard, so he will get every opportunity. This is his first year on the 40, so he has a couple options left.

One of the Rambling neighbors just walked his tiny dog by, as he does several times a day. He must be wearing a new pair of shorts, or a pair he rarely wears, as his knees and a couple inches below are as white as snow, while below that are very tan. Looks like he's wearing some sort of bandage.

You may wonder why I post this, but I found it funny. The mere fact I'm able to chuckle after 8 years of Obama makes me a winner.

Magnifico was given #51, which is Trevor Hoffman's former number.

That would seem to tell us that even if Hoffman makes the Hall of Fame, the Crew does not plan on retiring his number.

Mighty small sample, but not only did Tyler Cravy look to have added something to his motion to possibly add some deception, he was throwing 93-94. I'll have to look up his velocity in the past, but I recall lots of 90-91 from TC.

A couple weeks ago, I would have said the chances of Manny Pina or Tyler Cravy being on the offseason 40 man were slim and none. However, I would not say that about either as of this second.

EDIT: For once, my memory does not fail me. He averaged 90.8 last year, 90.9 this year. Of course, many pitchers add a mph or two when working out of the bullpen.

Brewers acquire Michael McHenry from ATL, will go to AAA.

I assume this is just a move for organizational depth, as I couldn't even tell you who the Sky Sox have behind the plate other than Susac. I would ask if Susac is healthy, and that's maybe who McHenry is replaceing, as Susac has 2 hits and a walk in nine games in AAA.

EDIT: Susac was indeed put on the DL. When production is way down...

You probably heard that a bunch of Black Lives Matter thugs rioted in Milwaukee last night, looting businesses, vandalizing vehicles, attacking cops, targeting white people, and setting random fires throughout the city.

As we've learned, some members of the Black Lives Matter community think it a wise decision to destroy their own communities in order to protest "police brutality." Because nothing says "Black lives matter" more than burning a black neighbor to the ground.

In any case, this "protest" erupted because a black suspect had been shot and killed by cops earlier in the day. The mob of fools took to the streets without waiting for a single solitary fact to be released. They knew, quite literally, nothing. They heard that a guy was black and he was shot. That's all.
Well, now we know a little more. We know that the dead suspect is Syville Smith. You can see his picture here, peacefully pointing a gun at the camera. He was, as you can tell from the picture, a thug with a lengthy arrest record. He was shot because he fled from the police during a traffic stop, then when pursued, he turned and pointed a loaded firearm at an officer. The officer fired. Syville was killed. The officer, by the way, is black.

So, a black cop killed a black gangbanger who tried to shoot him. And that was enough to prompt a night of chaos across another major American city, yet again necessitating the mobilization of the National Guard.
This is just insane. There is no logic to any of this.

    Racism? The cop was black.

Police brutality? The guy pointed a loaded gun at the cops.

Systematic oppression? It wasn't the system that caused Syville Smith to raise a firearm against the police.
No, you can't look for sanity or coherence here. These are just a bunch of imbeciles looking for an excuse to burn things. Nothing more. If they start up again tonight, I hope the police arrest every last one of them.

Enough. We have laws in this country. You can't act like an animal without consequences. Syville Smith learned that lesson yesterday.--Matt Walsh

Magnifico pitched an inning in Colorado Springs today, almost exactly what you would expect if he were coming up to pitch in the bullpen TUE for the doubleheader. Ben Rowen pitched 2 frames, and made 35 pitches, which seems a little high. Goforth pitched SAT night, but has not been down 10 days, so he won't be back. Cravy would be another option, 23 K's and 7 BB's in 17.1 IP since July 10.

Josh Hader started today, so he would be on almost perfect rest for SAT, when the Crew would need a SP, unless either Anderson or Garza go on short rest or they make it a bullpen game.

Help me Rhonda. Untrained monkeys would be far cheaper, more entertaining, and every bit as sucky.

    (8/13/2016 09:04:00 PM) - Al

Be interesting to see who the Crew brings up as the 26th man for their doubleheader on TUE. They have the day off MON, so they could just have 2 SP's start on regular rest...but that would mean they would have to have someone start on FRI on short rest, or bring someone up when they do not have a 26th man.

My first guess would be Taylor Jungmann, but he pitched last night in Biloxi, and he would have been pulled earlier had they intended to call him up, as he went 7 frames and 91 pitches. Josh Hader would be my next guess, though he would have to be added to the 40 man (he will in the offseason anyway).

EDIT: They just have Garza and Anderson scheduled on the team site, so I would guess they'll bring up a reliever and then make a move for FRI. Probably one already on the 40, Magnifico or Rowen.

Guerra, Barnes, Middlebrooks, and Santana all making progress, on their way back.

We'll about 3 weeks away from casuals incorrectly pointing out "the Brewers usually only bring up a couple players" on 9/1. Truth is, they often bring up 2-3 when rosters expand and another group when the minor league campaign ends. It's just that most folks are too busy watching Packers' practices to notice.

All 50/50 balls are errors at Miller Park. Jesus Christ could not have fielded that bad hop grounder to Villar tonight, and the E was up before he tossed it to the pitcher.

The funny thing is, only me and Ned Yost have ever had the guts to mention it. Everyone else apparently feels since he's been out of touch for so long, it's not fair to start being critical in year 400.

    (8/12/2016 10:24:00 PM) - Al

I believe having a strike zone that's about 50% too big and then being so out of touch that he throws out a manager walking back to the dugout is known as an umpire's "double play of ignorance."

It is simply off the charts how bad they are. Every single night. Then, once in a while, you get a guy that's only, you know, really crappy, and you realize...he might be the best.

Garrison Keillor used to talk about Lake Wobegon, where all the kids are above average.

MLB...where all the umpires are below average.

Doesn't have much of a ring to it.

I have to wonder what happens when these Questek scores of 71 show up, how many guys look at it and shake their heads at the ineptness before someone goes, "Oh well. They all suck, but I still get paid."

My season long defense of Ramon Flores pays off with a HR.

Most forget he's just 24. Sadly, he is out of options, so must be kept. He walks enough to still have value even with a low BA, and is able to play all 3 OF spots effectively, making him a nice reserve.

All that said, it will be difficult for Stearns to keep him on the 40 man...might be a case of finding the best time to send him down when most rosters are too full for him to be easily claimed.

Sounds like Alex Presley will soon be joining the Tigers as they need reinforcements after a couple injuries.

We often have people insist so and so isn't very good, but one has to remember, there are far more than 750 major leaguers (30 teams x 25 players); there are about 960 major leaguers (30 teams x 32 active and injured). Plus, there are guys like Keon Broxton, up and down 4 times this year; who could easily be called big leaguers whether they are up or down. Hence, there's about 1000.

The Cards and Mets are now public in their quest to at least inquire about Gomez. As I said a couple days ago, every contender should be on him, as his falloff certainly is likely to be injury related, and as a reserve, set up to succeed, you'd think he could contribute.

You know how many GM's overvalue a few good PA's in the postseason...look how Daniel Murphy was paid for a handful of good games despite a lengthy regular season track record. Gomez could have a nice playoffs and still sign a 3 year deal, instead of signing a 1 season, prove he can still produce contract.

It appears the Astros overreacted to a couple misplayed fly balls the game before he was DFA'd. They made the move without thinking of how they would replace him...they first said their defensive whiz who can't hit would take over, then called up a top prospect who has been playing mostly RF, so it would appear they let their emotions get in the way of what they were trying to accomplish.
