Cold weather to hit the entire US by late next week.

The longest Weather Underground goes is next FRI, and it has 24 for the high that day, which is probably about normal for the time of year. If that's the beginning of the cold stretch, it must be starting SAT. Even normal temps will seem terrible, as we are so used to the milder temps.

New CBA deal done, no changes of note that fans will notice.

I'm seen several Rule 5 lists, and my favorite remains Allen Cordoba, a very young SS in the Cards' system, ranked #19 at the link. He certainly looks athletic enough to be utilized as a PR/PH in what is pretty much a "wasted season"...and could probably be groomed to play anywhere on the field in a reserve role.

If they open up a 26th roster spot, I would expect many more teams to draft and carry a Rule 5 guy. I assume we will soon find out.

As I said a week ago, there's simply too much money in the game for all involved to not come to an agreement.

I also recall any criticism at all of the president elect 8 years ago was met with cries of racism and anti Muslim hate speech, even though he is/was not Muslim.

Funny how that worked. It's almost as if the left is a tad hypocritical about "rules" and the like.

If the feds were in charge of charter schools, they wouldn't work, cost a fortune, and no one would go to them. The lack of government involvement and the success of charter schools is not a coincidence, it's cause and effect.

I avoided reading this for 3 days because I knew it would make me miss the Rambling dog, who has been gone for 2 years now.

Good to see the little pup made it back home. We always laughed that if Ronnie ever got loose, he'd see a bunny and we'd never see him again. Apparently, that is what happened to this one.

(11/30/2016 12:09:00 PM) - Al

The party of the elderly.

The thing is, we've been pointing out the weakness of the bench for the past 8 years, and were laughed at. Then the Dems put out a pair of primary contenders that were not just old and out of touch, but so weak much of the country decided ages ago they weren't going to vote for either one of them...a fact lost on the left, because the old media insisted that the northeast and and far west was not a cocoon, but a true representation of the American voter.

A wise man pointed this out, though he multiplied it by all blacks everywhere.

It's amazing what one can find the time to do if one is not writing a heartwarming obit for a violent socialist dictator.

Liberals will scoff at, you know, capitalism and stuff, but as Trish correctly points out, this is what leads to small businesses in the area having confidence to expand. What's that old saying, small businesses add 75% of new jobs?

Talking to one of my clients today.

Them: So, what happens if someone can't afford the premium on their health insurance?

Me: Well, most just take a chance and they hope they don't get sick.

Them: But, then they have to pay a fine, right?

Me: Yep.

Them: Well, if they can't afford to buy insurance, how do they pay the fine?

I smiled and shrugged my shoulders.

Cespedes L2Y---.340/.537, 877 OPS, 30, 4y/$110M

Now if you will pardon me, I'm going to sit back and wait for folks to insist Braun makes way too much money, and the Brewers will have to eat money in any deal to trade him.

Joe lets Hilary have it.

Every word he said is 100% accurate. She lied, exaggerated, threw her hands in the air...and is now doing the exact same thing.

I had no respect for her before, and despite that, I still lost even more. This is why people hate her and why she lost.

The pieces the old media already had written crowning Hillary as president.

Looking back, maybe praising a violent dictator was not the most pragmatic item to check off one's to do list. It's easy to change your mind when you don't really believe in anything.

Of course, Obama did all but the same thing, but is above all criticism from the old media.

Analysis: TRUE

Anyone with half a brain knows this is just Stein agreeing to further soil her reputation (chuckle, giggle, guffaw) and raise money for the Green Party while acting as a strategic foil for Hillary, who spends her days pouting and hoping the bulk of her phlegm is not as bloody as it was yesterday.

They truly deserve each other.

(11/29/2016 02:30:00 PM) - Al

Old media hypocrisy?

I, for one, am shocked.

Joe is 100% accurate though. They feigned outrage, got it wrong, and now insist it is a fine option, even though the numbers are ridiculous. No one would have any problem with a recount if the margin was 200, or even 1500. FL was 500ish or so in 2000. 30K? 10K? Please.

There's a better chance of Bill being faithful to Hillary...

“Then he looked at me and said, ‘How was I supposed to know that cowboy George Bush would announce he wanted us ‘dead or alive’ and then invade Afghanistan to hunt us down?’” Mitchell writes. “KSM explained that if the United States had treated 9/11 like a law enforcement matter, he would have had time to launch a second wave of attacks.” He was not able to do so because al-Qaeda was stunned “by the ferocity and swiftness of George W. Bush’s response.”

But KSM said something else that was prophetic. In the end, he told Mitchell, “We will win because Americans don’t realize . . . we do not need to defeat you militarily; we only need to fight long enough for you to defeat yourself by quitting.”--Washington Post

You mean by being aggressive and killing terrorists, the USA is actually safer? The hell you say.

Read the whole thing, and be very thankful 9/11 happened on W's watch.

96% of the corn has been harvested in the US, according to National Ag Services. Reports are that some corn has been left standing in the field to be taken care of later due to a lack of storage space.

Several teams are after Mark Trumbo. Adam of MLB.com opines that is Trumbo signs before FRI, a losing team may have interest in Chris Carter. CC will be far cheaper and comes with only a one year commitment.

Now that he is DFA'd and effectively been replaced in MIL, any cost to the acquiring team is likely to be very minimal, as little as "future considerations" or cash.

11/29/2016 12:37:00 PM

(11/29/2016 12:30:00 PM) - Al

Allow me to agree wholeheartedly with this.

They were unhappy before the election. They were unhappy because Trump said he would challenge the results if he wanted to.

They are now unhappy that anyone has the nerve to point out their hypocrisy about challenging said results. They are unhappy far fewer blacks voted for a white woman than a black man. They are unhappy the rust belt felt Hillary was a liar and that all those scandals must have some merit. They are unhappy everyone else is a stupid idiot and that they are far more intelligent than those flyover rubes.

At the end of the day...they're just unhappy. One of the many young conservatives I follow on Twitter just sad the other day, paraphrasing here, "I've dated liberals, but they just bring me down. I like going to movies, concerts, sporting events, and going for walks. They want to complain about Trump. It's just depressing."

Libs on Facebook have gone into many rants since the election, and when I look back at their timeline, it's not uncommon. They go on rants about bad drivers, appliance warranties, their boss, their underlings, the bus not being on time, the weather...it'd be easier to compile a list on what they're NOT unhappy about.

Obama's presidency will go down in history as somewhere between a disaster and a dumpster fire, but at some point, we should just say it...that man can sell guns.

Yes, it's ironic he dislikes guns and tried to limit them. In fact, that pretty much says it all.

He also supposedly wanted cheap health care for all, which pretty much worked out in the same manner. If he hoped to accomplish a George Constanza presidency, he hit the nail on the head.

Eric Thames' contract with Brewers guarantees $16M: $4M in '17, $5M in '18, $6M in '19. Club option for '20 is $7.5M with a $1M buyout.--Adam, MLB.com

Money is far lower than I expected. I thought Thames would get 2-3 years, $7-8M per.

FYI, per Baseball Reference, Thames' last names is pronounced "Timms."

I was saying "Thames" in my head, as in, rhymes with shames. I hope he will forgive me.

11/29/2016 11:02:00 AM

(11/29/2016 10:14:00 AM) - Al

As I surmised last night upon hearing the Crew would not tender Carter, Stearns already had his replacement all but in house. MIL signs Eric Thames, who has been playing in South Korea the past few seasons, to a 3 yr/$16M contract. The deal has provisions allowing Thames to become a FA after the 3 years is up, even though he will not have 6 years of service time. It also limits how Thames can be sent to the minors, although given how little he signed for, he's not that overpaid even if he ends up being a reserve.

Over his three seasons with the NC Dinos, Thames compiled a ridiculous .348/.450/.720 batting line and swatted 124 home runs and 64 stolen bases. While those Ruthian numbers aren’t exactly unheard of in Korea, they do represent top-level production in a competitive league. It’s worth noting, too, that Thames fared rather well in terms of plate discipline, racking up 235 walks to go with his 293 strikeouts.--MLBTR

Those are video game like numbers, and there's no way Thames will be able to come close to hitting those stats in a league in which he will be facing top pitchers on a daily basis. However, Thames had a decent sample in the minors and majors before he went to the Orient to cash in and get everyday playing time.

Thames already has a track record in North American ball. He struck out 175 times in 684 major league plate appearances, all coming in 2011 and 2012, but was hardly unable to compete. Thames carried a .250/.296/.431 batting line and hit 21 home runs in his 181-game MLB run. He has also spent quite a bit of time at Triple-A, racking up a .312/.389/.506 slash and 23 dingers over 870 trips to the plate at the highest level of the minors.--MLBTR

A line of .300/.430, while not outstanding, is not worthless either.  It seems likely Thames was simply looking for an opportunity to play in the bigs and was willing to do so for far less than he could have got going year to year, assuming he has any measure of success. And, while his salary is certainly manageable, one must not forget, he is set for life, as are a few generations with any type of money management.

Thames is a LH hitter, but has hit LHP decently too during his MLB time. I have no idea what kind of defender he is, but while he has played 1B in Korea, he was a corner OF in the states. I assume he is expected to man 1B most days for MIL, but admittedly, no one has any idea how he will hit. I think it's safe to say the Brewers are expecting him to end up somewhere between his MLB production and his video game like output in the KBL. Even if he only matches his 2011-12 numbers, he's a fine risk, as his upside is probably higher than any FA 1B this offseason.

The mere fact they ran a pipeline from one coast in Alaska through the tundra, cold weather, earthquakes, and ice/snow; to another coast, pretty much tells you any concerns about an oil pipeline is, at best, fictional.

I was a little fella when it was built, and I recall protests and those that insisted it would lead to an environmental catastrophe...I know this will shock you, but 35 years later, this appears to have been an exaggeration or falsehood spread by liberals opposed to capitalism, prosperity, and the American dream.

Imagine that.

Back when I worked retail, I always used to work the holidays, open to close if it was a short day, so the rest of the management team could have the entire day off. The Rambling wife was never a fan of it, but I really did not care if I was off, for example, July 4th or the 6th, and it built great loyalty among my staff.

I still remember when one of my assistants left for a Milwaukee, higher volume store, in hopes of being promoted, she called on Labor Day and when I picked up, before she even said hi, her first words were, "I knew you'd be working."

She then went on to say she had been told to expect to work holidays because her new boss told her, "I had to work them back when I was an assistant, and I ain't working them anymore." She said that I had always worked them, and was told, "Al never struck me as very bright."

So, I guess Mattis is not smart enough to be in charge of anything. Just a word of warning.

(11/28/2016 09:22:00 PM) - Al

Brewers have decided to nontender Chris Carter.

A bit strange, as their payroll remains very low, and they have no 1B prospect or reserve ready to step in...though as I have pointed out several times, there are many LH FA 1B that have been linked to MIL in the past, though most before Stearns took over. They may have already spoken with any number of available FA's or trade partners and have a player or two in mind. Of course, they could still bring Carter back at any agreed upon rate, as he will be a FA now.

...just a quick glance at the 1B FA list gives us Adam Lind, Logan Morrison, James Loney, and Mitch Moreland, all 4 of which have been rumored to have Crew interest in the past (except Lind, who actually played a season in MIL); all plenty passable, and all LH hitters.--Ramblings 10/7/16

{pause to admire such beautiful prose...good job me}

And the open market is full of power options this winter, with players like Mike Napoli, Brandon Moss, Carlos Beltran, Matt Holliday, Pedro Alvarez, and Steve Pearce all expected to be available for one or two-year commitments.--MLBTR

Alvarez was discussed a lot last winter, and is the son in law of the bench coach. I'll throw Kelly Johnson into the mix too, as he's an OBP guy and though he hits LH, has no split differential.

Of course, the fact no other team wanted to trade for Carter and pay him the estimated $8M in arby likely says a lot about his value at that price. Arby still uses counting stats, which is in direct conflict with the metrics most clubs use.

ADDED: I will say this, Stearns seems to not be the least bit interested or bothered by emotion...doesn't care if he saw them play or if they had a good season for him. He's a by the book poker player, it's all about the math.

Damn facts.

It was funny today during that half hour the old media falsely reported a mass shooting at Ohio State, the anti gun sentiments were all over the web. No such disdain for knives however, and even more bothersome, none for mental illness either.

Sampson had a pair of outstanding outings versus the Brewers, and while he had some control issues, throws hard and had a 3.49 ERA before he had a rough final outing of the year after not pitching for a week and a half.

He throws 93 and has 4 pitches that he actually uses, and he'll be 26 next season. I'd take him over either Geltz or Parker, on age and ceiling alone (though I do like both as middle relief depth).

If someone can get this fella to throw strikes a tad better, he's an average major league SP. That's worth a claim in itself.

Brewers claim Geltz, DFA Walker.

Walker (and Geltz, for that matter) made it past all the AL teams, so hopefully, he will slip through waivers unclaimed and be able to be outrighted to Colorado Springs.  Of course, a team in the AL could claim him now that they have a roster spot open or have had time to consider it, but they rarely do.

Geltz was a very serviceable major league reliever in 2015, and has been solid in AAA for half a decade. He's 29, and only 5-10, so he is what he is, he's being looked at for his floor, not his ceiling. As pointed out at the link, Matt Arnold knows him well from the Rays, and he's a high K/9, high K/BB ratio guy, though his HR/9 is a bit high compared to the usual Stearns' pickups.

Fastball/slider/change up, consistent at 92 and 80-82 with his velocity. Both RH's and LH's get on base at a .293 clip against him, but he holds lefties to a .333 SLG, while RH's have a .458 SLG, meaning he is a "reverse splits" guy.

BUMPED: Sunday day results

BUMPED with Jim update:

Hi Al,

I just got back from deer hunting.  After 9 days of no running water and using an outhouse I’m ready for a shower.  We had some good success and toasted each kill with “Trump is making deer hunting great again”.  The Hillary lovers in our group were not amused.

Week 11 had Chris Burke (SI.com) and Lorenzo Reyes (USA Today) share top honors with records of 13 - 1.  You ended up at 9 – 5 and in 103rd place.   For the season the new leader is Elliot Harrison (NFL Network) with 105 correct.  Your total of 92 lands you into 93rd.

This week it looks like Buffalo, Miami, and New England are the overwhelming favorites which means one or two should lose.  The toss up games appear to be Tennessee at Chicago and San Diego at Houston.

Heading off to scrub a dub dub.

Jim R.

I was correct, as I thought Jim was a deer hunter. Congrats on another successful and safe hunt.

The Rambling wife just texted and told me to clear space in the freezer (which I now have to pretend I did not see, it's tough being married), as she's bringing home more steaks, chops, roasts from our son's deer, as well as some moose the inlaws needed to clear out of their freezer. They did not get around to making any ground venison, so that will have to wait until next time.

Just a quick note, I looked up what the difference was between "steak" and chops" the last time she brought venison home, and while my parents used the same terms, the difference is minimal, at best. If you ask ten people, you may get ten answers.

A butcher will say that a chop is cut perpendicular to the spine of the animal and usually includes at least part of a rib, and a steak can come from any part of the animal.--Quora

Steak is cut from the shoulder, and is usually more tender than chops, which can come from anywhere.--Yahoo

Imagine to be so politically correct that you feel the need to say something positive about a violent dictator with 582 "confirmed" executions of political dissidents.

I don't know if this is the strategy or not, but if it is, it's like "surprising" the other team on a 4th and 22 by taking a knee....not only is it stupid, but it fails to accomplish anything.

Of course, I can "uncall" them easily enough. But I've never had to. ATL is up by 3 scores, and I can't imagine the Rams or Bears scoring enough points to catch up.

EDIT: Or the Browns.

I've said this before, but if Ethan Happ sticks around for all 4 years, he might be right near the top of Badgers' scoring and rebounding charts.

Whenever a solid young player is trying to decide between playing 10-15 minutes a game (at most) as a freshman or redshirting, they should show them Happ's career and walk away...smart young players will make the right decision.

Badgers up 20 at the half. Prairie View A&M has hit several difficult shots as well. Since it was 10-10, UW has outscored them 37-17.

I find it funny they have PVAMU on their uniforms...I would think Prairie View would be a far better representation of the school, maybe with A&M in a small font if they find that necessary.

I can't believe 10% of the public could ID them by the PVAMU acronym.

Several TV analysts and commentators wondering if the college football playoff will include Ohio State or the winner of the Penn State/Badgers "title game?"

Let me get this straight...Ohio State has one loss and was #2, and defeated the #3 Michigan squad...and they're going to slide below the winner of a game between #6 and #7, who both have two losses?

If that happens, we're better off scrapping the whole thing and going back to having a bunch of writers who used to cover the sport decide who was the best.

The Lions/Badgers winner needs to hope Clemson or Washington either loses, or "barely wins" while the Big Ten title game ends in a 38-6 blowout. Any scenario that has the Buckeyes not making the final four is ridiculous and mindnumbing.

Of course, given how badly the NCAA is at this...

Dodgers so far in debt, MLB has chatted with them.

The article says "hundreds of millions" several times, but if the "limit" is indeed 12 times revenue, there's no way the Dodgers take in less than $150M a year, and it could be twice that. Even at the lower number, multiplying it by a dozen would be $1.8B.

So refreshing to see.

The idea Obama and Trudeau glossed over the facts just because Castro was a socialist, which they yearn to admit they are but are forced to keep silent under the guise of being "progressive," shows how out of touch they are. Castro ruled by death, just like Hitler and the various USSR dictators did.

Defending that shows being completely out of touch.

I'm not sure how many red flags are possible on a case like this, but I think this one has them all.

Kidnapped by women? Apparently "let go" unharmed after weeks? Despite being "restrained" she manages to travel miles and flags down a passing motorist? Her phone and earbuds both left behind in easy to find places?

If there was ever a recipe for a preplanned disappearance, this is it. However, it could easily be an amateur stranger abduction gone bad, however rare those are. As many have pointed out, the Dems are throwing money at the Green Party's recount, which is as pointless as the Green Party itself.

Meanwhile, the great state of Louisiana is having a run off to determine the 100th Senate seat, and donations are barely trickling in, the "liberal" candidate (as one can imagine in the deep South, the Dem is still more moderate/conservative than some GOP senators) has raised less than $1.5M.

Keep sending your cash into the wrong place. Anyone who thinks the Green Party won't be banking all the cash they can (they've already raised the "goal" several times, and aren't even hiding the fact they are one thin level about crooks) is living in a fable.

Outnumbered gals wondering why in the world Dems are sending Stein money, and wonder if Hillary's campaign is supporting them behind the scenes.

BUMPED and UPDATED, 11/25

EDIT:  Just to make myself clear, this original post ran a month ago, and I updated it to show players no longer on the 40.

Update at bottom of post, along with players added to the 40 since 11/1

I see some teams are already starting to clear the 40 man roster by outrighting players to the minors. Might as well look at the Brewers situation and put them in 4 groups...will remain on 40, probably will stay, will be removed, and "I don't knows."

Will certainly stay on 40 man (19)

Anderson
Barnes
Davies
Garza
Guerra
Jungmann
Knebel
Nelson
Peralta
Thornburg
Torres
Arcia
Carter
Gennett
Perez
Villar
Braun
Broxton
Santana

Very likely to stay on 40 man (6)
Blazek
Cravy
Lopez
Magnifico
Suter
Susac

On the fence, or perhaps, "I just don't know." (13)
Barrios
Goforth
Marinez
Houser
Nolin
Scahill
Maldonado
Pina
Rivera
Liriano
Nieuwenhuis
Reed
Wilkins

Likely to be removed, or will be a free agent (6)
Boyer
Capuano
Rowen
Pinto
Cecchini
Elmore

Added to 40 man roster since 11/1
Hader
Phillips
Brinson
Cordell
Williams
Parker (waiver claim)
Walker (waiver claim

A few more thoughts on players in the last two groups, and perhaps a thought or two on a few others:

I would assume most of those who are not kept on the 40, or who will elect free agency, will be invited back on minor league contracts. Looking at the final six, it is likely 4-6 of them will spend time in the majors next season; Boyer, Rowen, and Elmore especially.

All of the players "on the fence" are, as one would expect, tough decisions, both for me and the Crew. Barrios, Houser, Nolin, and Liriano are all injured at present; and all but Houser missed the entire 2016 campaign...Houser is all but certain to miss all of 2017. They know far more about their injuries, recover time, and odds of returning than I do. I will say this...none of them would clear waivers, except possibly Houser, as it would only take a 40 man spot for a team to steal them away. Adrian might, only because he'll be out all of next season, and while certainly a solid prospect, profiles best as a reliever or a bottom of the rotation SP.

Goforth has been mediocre to below average in his stints in the majors, but the fact is, he throws 93-95 mph, along with a 88-89 mph slider,  makes it very unlikely he'd pass through waivers unclaimed. On the negative side, he'll be 28 soon, meaning his days as anything but a middle reliever are probably gone.

Scahill and Marinez were both claimed off waivers after being DFA'd. Both performed admirably. Both are probably "what you see is what you get" types. Jhan is 28, and averaged 94.7 with his fastball, and maybe for the first time in his career, was able to control a plus breaking ball, often freezing hitters with it. Scahill will be 30, is a little more of a generic middle relief guy, but was effective, showed the ability to go multiple innings, and pitched every bit as well as Marinez.

Reed was mentioned as part of the team's OF depth a week or so ago by Stearns, so he was close to going on the "likely" list. But, the club's strength is OF's, and while he has always got on base, walked a lot, and is capable of playing all the OF spots, his ceiling has lowered the past two seasons.

Maldy and Pina? I don't know. Both are probably solid reserves and weak starters. I do not know how the braintrust looks at them. I would say Maldy is probably a bit more productive, but will also be pricey as he gets into arby.

Rivera? Equally as puzzled. I discussed it here. Yadi is a good field/no hit type, but he does "look" like he could hit successfully...he just rarely does. He is still relatively young at 24, and as good a fielder as he is, given his ability to play SS, he'd never get through waivers.

Nieuwenhuis is a quality 4th OF or the strong half of a platoon, especially in CF. He has been DFA'd before, but has never cleared waivers. He won't now either. Assuming his sports hernia is minor, he's certainly a quality MLB option. However, does his age and ceiling make him 40 man worthy?

Finally, Wilkins was up a while and hit a couple HR's. He was on the 40 all season, and like Nieuwenhuis, has been DFA'd but never cleared. He has pop. He's close to being on the "no" list, but I'm not positive how the Crew feels about him.

UPDATE: I would expect to see 2-4 more removed before the roster is "settled" before the Rule 5 and free agency. My guesses? A catcher, a reliever, and Houser/Rivera would be the ones on the cusp, in my opinion.

The Braves have now signed Colon, Dickey, and Rodriguez.

I don't even see them as a 70 win team yet. I know they have a special circumstance since they're moving into a new ballpark, and they were pretty much a .500 club in the 2nd half. Add all that up, and they could be a outside possibility to contend I suppose, but it sure isn't a common path to take to the playoffs.

Unofficial reports on Facebook, Twitter, and the local news would indicate tonight is far busier than last year's retail scene.

That said, traffic does not mean more in sales. I think the credit card folks come out with a report late tomorrow afternoon with their estimate of spending. You always have the naysayers...if it's up 4% (which is, in dollars, about 18 kazillion), you will have those that say, "Well, credit card spending is up because people don't have any money."

And then those negative nellies complain their ice cream is cold, their coffee is hot, and their family never visits, something about them being cranky old farts; but hence, I digress.

Seeing lots of positive discussion about retail sales this season, as crowds are said to be quite large today at the "big 3" of Target, Wal Mart, and Best Buy...though it doesn't matter if folks do not spend while they are there.

Two more days to shop will help, as the longer the season is, the more likely shoppers are to buy stuff for themselves, as well as "add on" to their gift lists.

I would expect many folks of both political persuasions to spend more on average too...Republicans are thrilled the days of Obama have ended and are expecting to have more money in their pocket, while Dems will probably spend more because they are pretty much certain the end of the world is near.

{Remember that ad that insisted Trump was going to blow everyone up, you know from that..."independent" technician? The irony being, of course, Hillary is and has been a temper tantrum since her days as first lady, the Secret Service tales are legendary. This is why they lose. Length of Aretha Franklin's national anthem...4 minutes.

I believe that takes attention whoredom to an entirely new level.

I'm just glad Hillary wasn't there. She would have been forced to take a knee out of sheer exhaustion...

It's always sad losing a loved one on a holiday, which is what makes Aretha Franklin murdering the national anthem so tragic.--Wil Presti

I call Aretha Franklin the Abe Lincoln of singing the National Anthem cuz she started four score and seven years ago.--Tom Fornelli

I cooked my whole turkey, ate and did the dishes during Aretha Franklin's National Anthem performance.--BlaiseInKC

Bro I got married and had a child and Aretha Franklin still isn't done.--Greg Jobeless

Franklin managed to bring the entire country together with her "too damn long" performance. Congrats to her.

This actually goes for every day, but even moreso today.

If your meal is $25-30, even in small town Wisconsin, anything under $5 is pathetic. And for delivery folks, the days of $1-2 (or even worse, rounding up the change) probably ended, or should have, when I quit doing it part time back in 1995.

You can try justifying being a cheapskate all you want, but at the end of the day, you just end up lying to yourself and being stingy.

I copied and pasted a post from Thanksgiving 2007, with a couple extra thoughts....

Dr. Schullman's Thanksgiving story. By far the most requested link in Ramblings' history, someone e-mails for this several times a year.

Bobby Warns' tribute page...we should all be very thankful that we have a military full of men and women who are willing to take on evil and kill or be killed. Regardless of how many times I link to it (it's on the sidebar too, mind you), someone always writes to say they watched it for the first time and how well it is done. If you wish, there is a donation area on there for a trust fund for Bobby's daughter, who was born after he gave his life to protect ours. I promise you, no other gift this holiday season will go to a better cause.

Ben Stein wrote this nearly 5 years ago, and it's just as true today, as we celebrate Thanksgiving, a true American holiday.

Allow me the first of many thank yous for the United States' military, many of which will spend the holiday far from home and with a sense their commander in chief has no respect for them at all (denying that will only lead me to the facts, which are not on your side, so please, shut up). Set an extra plate at the table and when someone asks, tell them that's for those who did not make it home this year...or maybe, never will.

I've never seen anyone cook a turkey in pieces before this year, and now I've seen it done 3-4 times.  You know, it is just like a big chicken.

Funny, if you're going to do that, you might as well fry it, which I'm sure would be very yummy.

Happy Thanksgiving to all, but a special mention to those who are working today without a fraction of the fanfare of those in retail; our police and firefighters, EMT's, those that take care of the elderly and those that work in  hospitals, restaurant/hotel folks, convenience stores, movie theaters, and so on.

And a special mention to those in the military, who volunteered to sign on the dotted line to serve and defend, many of whom are halfway around the world for the holiday.

Black Wednesday...the busiest bar night of the year.

I do recall back when I worked at the pizza place in Eau Claire I often got stuck working WED night, and not only was it busy late, but the phone would ring like mad after we closed at 1, just like a weekend. Had no idea it was "that busy" however.

So, if you're out late tonight, be super careful...I assume the busiest bar night of the year also means one of the busier nights for drunk driving.

Sanders would love this to happen...socialism has existed for centuries with the idea of making everyone live in poverty and be dependent on the government.

It ain't a coincidence it's never worked, as it's destined to fail. When you get the same thing whether you sleep all day or are up at the crack of dawn; well, except for those hellishly annoying morning people; soon, everyone will sleep until noon.

Crew claims Blake Parker, DFA Goforth.

I talked about Parker last year, incredible K and HR/9  numbers, but he has walked more than you'd like to see. I like Goforth's stuff, and while I like Parker's as well, he'll turn 32 next season (and yes, I minimized the Guerra pickup too). He was available in AUG and earlier this month too, but was claimed both time by other AL teams. This is the first time he's made it to the NL. It seems likely the Crew claimed him every time.

Hopefully, David will get through waivers, as many teams have a full 40. That said, given he has two plus pitches and AAA success before 2016, I would doubt it.

11/23/2016 03:49:00 PM

(11/23/2016 03:30:00 PM) - Al

Heh.

As I have said numerous times, I have many friends who are radical liberals, many that are moderate Dems, and some that lean left as independents.

Their politics are not the same as mine, but that doesn't mean they're bad people. I struggle that anyone would be that difficult to be around.

Of course, as we've seen since the election, lots of folks don't take losing with the same "we'll get them next time" outlook as myself.

I think much of this comes from sales, in which I never let anyone know what side I'm on unless they share it first. I recall sitting in the home of a county Democrat chair, who had Clinton/Gore and their wives in their home, with many pictures of this, as their farm had held a rally for them in either 1988 or 1992. They went on and on saying how nice Bill and Al and Tipper had been...Hillary was very quiet.

I thought to myself, yep, that's one way to put it.

The irony was, I saw them in the summer of 2008, and they had serious doubts about Obama. Said he seemed like a good speaker, but "that was it." The guy said, "If all it takes is a good speech to be president, who knows who we'll end up with." To this day, I still regret not saying, "Maybe Donald Trump."

Can't we turn this off?

1. I have made fun of the left's hatred of the pro American anthem God Bless the USA on several occasions. I guess now we need to realize they hate all patriotic, feel good songs.

2. In their little world, the left LOVES to "just turn off" the part of the country that they don't like...you know, pretty much all of it except their little cocoon that sucks a huge majority of the tax money into their urban areas.

3. Am I the only one that delights in their misery? I guess not, judging by my email.

The hell with them.

The best Thanksgiving tips I've heard over the years, free of charge. Ramblings premium subscribers, even though you're not real, will get a bonus one emailed to you later today.

And they're also the two simplest.

1. Always have plenty of chicken/turkey broth on hand. If you have the space, have a pot of it on the stove hot and ready to add to your dishes as needed.--Bobby Flay

Flay may be a serial womanizer (allegedly, of course), but he can cook. You might need to add some flavor to the gravy, thin it out; or add some moisture to something you overcooked or got done too early. Broth fixes everything.

2. You know that roll of foil in your cupboard? But a new one when you're out shopping for Thanksgiving. Because you have no idea if that roll at home is almost full or almost gone.

I can't remember who said it, but they're right. It costs $5, but it's priceless if you run out.

(11/23/2016 01:00:00 PM) - Al

Last year, I prepped for the first snowfall of the year by stopping at the Ace Hardware a mile or so from my house and bought a pair of big bags of ice melt (which most of incorrectly call salt, because we're exceedingly simple).

I noticed yesterday that I still had a half to 2/3rd's of a bag left, which is like eating the last of the chocolate cake and then finding you put an extra one in the vegetable crisper (which we call the "rotter" in our house because the contents are, invariably, inedible). So, last night, I took a few handfuls and covered my sidewalk and driveway, as the road crews would call it, "pretreating." We got 2.7 inches according to a TV station, which for some reason, everyone is reporting as official, even on the National Weather Service alert that came to my phone.

So, while all my neighbors have a thin layer of snow/slush on their driveway (all the sidewalks are clear, we have enough people that walk their dogs they have been taken care of), mine is all but clear. I threw a few more handfuls on this AM, readying it for the 1-3 inches we might get today.

I can only imagine the frustration of people when they drive by and think, "Why the hell is Al's driveway warmer than ours?"

(11/23/2016 12:51:00 PM) - Al

Ryan Braun shows up for the annual food drive again.

I trust David Stearns to lead the rebuild, and think his first year was very well spent, leading a team that was not nearly as bad as many thought they would be, while building a farm system that is ranked as the best in the game by many. If he does trade Braun, which I would have no problem with, he will get fair value for him.

However, as the face of the franchise, he will be all but irreplaceable for at least a year or two. And, when he is eventually replaced, be it soon, or in several years, we will be reminded that often the best players are rarely the ones who want to be vocal, talk to the press, and show up for such PR gimmicks. Heck, back when I ran a store, I would send my assistant to things and would justify it by saying "it's good training" when in reality, I just did not want to shake hands and pretend I cared. Plenty of good players feel the same way, and never mind they make eight figures a season.

(11/23/2016 12:15:00 PM) - Al

It ain't as easy as paying some gal to give you a "massage," is it?

Lost in the faux furor over the temps warming a tiny bit are two simple, inconvenient (see what I did there?) truths:

1. The planet has cooled since 1973. That makes all the "oh no, the polar caps are melting" and "polar bears will soon be extinct" hilariously funny.

2. In reality, as far as long term human survival goes, colder weather is far worse than warmer weather. Longer growing seasons are good; long, cold winters are bad.

We're in the very best of hands.

This Department of Justice is the same one that outlawed online poker, and went after the 3rd party companies that moved money from the public to the sites that were based overseas and then "upon further review," decided that it was not actually illegal, as The Wire Act of 1961 was outdated technology wise, not to mention "gambling" and "poker" are not synonymous because poker is a game of skill. They spooked the poker sites so badly, they are still afraid to set up shop in the USA, and advertise.

It's easy to change your mind when you don't really believe in anything. That's why it's annoying when leaders lack leadership.

I'm having a hard time believing this, as the money is simply flowing in the sport right now, players are making a fortune, and owners are very comfortable as well, especially with the TV money flowing in at record levels.

Of course, you could have a "lockout" last a 2-3 months and it would have no effect on the game, as no one is playing now, and won't until FEB. The only impact would be on players that are rehabbing.

I'm just surprised both sides are not saying, basically, hey, let's get this thing settled, things are going great. And maybe they will.

Badgers win, play in title game tomorrow night at 9 Central. Good thing it's a holiday Thursday, unless, of course, you still have to work.

With luck, NC will lose to Oklahoma State, as the Tar Heels are #4 in the country. That said, the worst they can do is go 2-1 out there, which is what you want to see from your top 20 team.

11/22/2016 09:12:00 PM

(11/22/2016 05:29:00 PM) - Al

I stopped at our little neighborhood grocery on the way to pick up the Rambling son at school, needed a couple things for THU, and I probably won't leave the house before the weekend, because it's supposed to snow 3-6 inches, I'm not all that social, and if I don't leave any tracks, the neighbors might snowblow me out while I stay toasty warm and drink hot cocoa, thinking I'm gone.

Not only did I have to park a long walk away (I do not think I've ever parked further away than the prime two dozen spots right by the door), but they were out of carts, and a pair of managers were running in and out of the store bringing in a couple at a time. They also had all 6 registers going...I don't think I've ever seen more than 4.

I thought everyone was trying to beat the day before Tgiving rush, but the cashier said it was probably because of "senior day," which is every TUE, and allows those over 55 or 60 to save 5% on their entire purchase. Since I am so gray, I almost always get this discount when I happen to stop in on a TUE, and sure enough, I pocketed 77 cents today (woo hoo).

Hey, not my fault they don't ask. I'll try not to spend it all in one place.

The funny thing about this is, many counties in our area have been loudly complaining that they cannot keep their roads and bridges in pristine condition because the Governor has held the line on taxes.

The irony? They can spend whatever they want on roads. They just have to pay for it themselves.

So, what they're saying is:

1. We want better roads.

2. But we don't want to pay for it.

3. However, we think it would be an excellent idea if the money we need came from people elsewhere in the state, or even in the country; from people who will not gain anything from this repair/improvement.

4. So, at the end of the day, we want it, as long as it's free and not painful to us.

So, what happens when a large city needs extra cash to pay for security, crime, and so on?

Well, let them pay for it themselves! They're not getting any of my money!

Everyone's a fiscal conservative except when they're begging for money.

What we see here is a bunch of judges upset because they want to make law and not be on the bench...because "they know better."

Anyone who thinks rioting and blocking the roads so hard working folks can't get home to spend times with their families is going to swing public support over to your side...well, that's why you have plenty of time on your hands to riot.

The more and longer it goes on, the more reluctant Trump voters are going to feel more comfortable with their choice. Even moreso, the ones who did not vote feel far more aligned with the crowd not causing havoc and damaging property.

Remember what I said a few days ago. The master plan goes like this:

1. Patriotism is bad.

2. If patriotism is bad, the country must be bad.

3. If the country is bad, we must need to change. I have this little socialism idea I've been wanting to try...it led to extreme poverty in Cuba...let's give it a go!

They are nothing if not predictable. And this is really going to make for some awkward 4th of July parties in blue states.

The problem is, everyone who is not a suggestion prone imbecile on a college campus realizes this is ridiculous and really, really stupid.

NFL kickers are 44/45 on Field Goals from 32-33 yards this year, but have missed an astounding 48 extra points from that same distance.--Mark Domanik

That sounds like it's quite an outlier, but in reality:

44/45 FG's------97.8%
701/749 XP's--93.5%

One also has to remember that most teams pretty much always go for the extra point, while some would choose to go for it on 4th down if the weather was rainy and/or windy.

Much like the US's standing in the world, which can best be described as "laughable" after 8 years of kicking the can down the road; the president elect has his work cut out for him, as difficult as it is to believe, on protecting police officers.

No responsibility taken, still blames public and legislative makeup. Best case scenario for the GOP.

New CBA expected to keep schedule at 162 games, add a few days to the schedule, and maybe add a 26th man.

Unlikely to have 40 players available in SEP, lower amounts being considered.

I doubt if the left will appreciate Baron going to a private school, as I'm sure the fact the Obamas did too will be quickly forgotten. Given that Trump is a strong supporter of school choice, it makes perfect sense.

I recall some saying they did not think Trump would move to DC, which he would not need to do in today's (secure, unless you're Hillary) electronic world. Walker has not lived in the governor's residence, I do not believe, unless he sleeps there sometimes.

My Congressman, Sean Duffy, eschews the high priced DC apartment scene by sleeping in his office on an inflatable mattress, showering in the health club provided for politicos.

I moved my car outside to make room for the Rambling wife's in the garage.

{If you're married, you'll understand.}

1. Gotta have the Rambling son (who I've started referring to as Rambo) clean out the other side of the garage before he leaves TUE/WED, before the snow flies.

2. I shoulda put on shoes. My feet are still cold, and that was 30 minutes ago.

Every proposed message board trade involving Ryan Braun has him going to a team on his no trade list. You know, I'm not an intelligent man. I'm just not brain dead.

If he wanted to go to Boston, New York, or Texas, he would put them on his allowed list. Yes, he could waive his clause, but why would he?

The Rambling wife just texted to tell me she was on her way to the Orchestra Hall in Mpls.

There's a phrase I never expected to see. Her niece plays in a youth/junior group of musicians, I'm not sure if it's a symphony or orchestra (or, what the difference is, I'm a small town boy who prides himself on being art illiterate).

Amen.

But, what are you going to do, Al? You're looking at it.

If I wanted to be busy all the time, I'd work 70-80 hours a week like I did in college and right after.

This is made even easier by the fact I don't care for people.

Back when the Rambling wife was the Rambling girlfriend, she had to do a semester long unpaid internship about 2.5 hours from home. I was in retail then, and despite having keys to the store, and made about $7 an hour. For 4 months, we had to pay two rents. We built up some credit card debt, and for a couple years, played what we called the "transfer game." We would move it to a 0% for 6 months promo, and when it was up, we'd do it again. Even at 0%, it took a long time to get caught up, as you have to pay your current bills AND from the past...lesson learned.

We rarely carry a balance now, though we take advantage of our store cards "0% for 6/12/18 months" offers all the time. The Rambling wife got the mail before she left yesterday, as she was expecting her new contacts. She took the box and grabbed a spare pair to take with her, and left the rest of the mail with me. I just skimmed through it...14 things, 9 0% credit card offers from 6 companies.

We still keep a pile of them by the bill pile, and "rotate them" every couple months, as they expire quickly.

You never know.

Seeing a lot of the #BoycottHamilton hashtag on Twitter. While a few are posting it sarcastically, most mean it, including lots of liberals who are unhappy with the bullying aspect of it. Stevie Van Zandt, who is in Springsteen's E Street Band, proudly says he did not vote for Pence, says he was very unhappy with the bullying, and then attacked those who questioned the use of the term, asking, "What else do you call it?"

I don't think there is any other option. As he said, it's like inviting a guest into your home, and then being critical of them, it's just bad manners.

Good to see.

Per radio ads and City Pages, I think there are about a half dozen male strip shows or "dance revues" tonight in the Wausau area. Basically, almost any bowling alley or gentleman's club, and a couple bars with a stage that normally has a live band has some sort of "hunter's widow" stage show tonight, and some have an early and a late show.

I'm certainly not offended by this, but I do have a simple question...when will they stop treating us like meat and appreciating us for our minds and not our bodies?

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to the shower. I need to cleanse myself from the soiled behavior of women.

The Rambling son calls with news of an 8 point buck right before the end of the day. His grandpa got one before breakfast. Our little provider. Says it's about the same size as his first one, so it should be good eating, his first just melts in your mouth (granted, they make ground venison out of all but the best cuts).

That makes two this year, and he still has a pair of tags remaining.

Why would we skip a day of Thanksgiving when we have so much to be thankful for?

Besides, the amount of joy in the phrase, "Hey Gramps, can you pass the stuffing and the liberal tears this way?" is simply immeasurable.

Anyone with a sense of humor would laugh, and very loudly. And if they don't, well, that's a shame.

The only people they need safety from is themselves.

I expect him to clear too because of the contract he signed, but it's a rare opportunity to get a pretty good young 1B who has stalled out, but never really given an opportunity long term either.

I would pick him up and then immediately outright him, as the 40 man spot is perhaps worth more than the money he is owed. He had an 800 OPS versus RHP in AAA last year, and walks a lot. I'm sure the Astros have fiddled nonstop with him, and he may well be suffering from "too many hands in the cookie jar" instruction overload.

Stick him at AAA, play him at 1B every day, and just let him be for half a season. It's a $6.5M gamble, but the upside is there. Heck, as I pointed out, that's the price of a good, not great middle reliever. It'd be different if you could sign an everyday player for that.

Go big or go home.

(11/19/2016 12:54:00 PM) - Al

SL will pay Zach Duke and Brett Cecil about $12.5M next season to throw 60-70 total innings.

Yes, I realize I'm playing with numbers, as Duke will miss all of 2017, but, that's the risk you take when you sign players to a long term contract.

The Times was right 30 years ago.

It's freedom and economics.

This is probably something Trump will "compromise" on, but he shouldn't. Ignoring basic tenements of ECON101 will only be followed by regret and undesired consequences.

(11/19/2016 11:55:00 AM) - Al

The left's complete lack of understanding how poorly their bad behavior will be looked at by "regular Americans" just shows how out of touch they are.

I could write on this for hours, but it is not worth my time. There is no more self important faction in all the land than Broadway. Hamilton is a huge hit, but their numbers are pathetic, they basically cater to wealthy tourists and the Northeastern elites. They sell out most every show...but that's only about 10K tickets a week, at about a $200 "average" price. So, this year, they'll draw about 500K people.

The theater district known as Broadway has about 30 venues, and I'll say they average about 5K each a week, which is probably being friendly. That's 7.8M in attendance for an entire year.

More people watched MacGyver last night on CBS than will see a broadway show in 2016.  About the same amount of people watched The Young and the Restless on POP TV (used to be the TV Guide channel you know) Thursday night as will see Hamilton in 2016...and it was ranked 148th...on cable...for the day.

The only thing the left misjudges more than how immature choices will be judged is their reaction to it. Twitter is full of folks saying they thought it was great they "embarrassed" the VP elect. In reality, it is unknown how much of the monologue Pence heard, because the Secret Service was mortified and hustled him out of the venue, as while a few attendees knew Pence was in the crowd (reports say he was greeted by a mixture of boos and applause when he arrived), most did not, and to bring attention to his position in an enclosed space with limited exits as most of the crowd is getting up and scurrying about was, at best, shortsighted; and probably created a "security situation," as the feds would probably call it.

Of course, math tells you that several players (how's that terminology?) on the stage voted for Trump/Pence, as even though the acting community and Manhattan are overwhelmingly left of center, so are many Trump voters...that's why he won. Only 10% of Manhattan residents voted for Trump, but if the stage had 30, that means 3 were quietly hiding their disgust and trying to fit in, choosing to remain silent due to bullying, peer pressure, and the desire to have a job in entertainment, both today and in the future.

My feeling? Thank goodness they don't get it. This blindness led them to overconfidence, nominating a flawed candidate, and the inability to realize this, which has led to "blaming the public" since.

Nothing solidifies the vote of a hesitantr voter more than having the disrespectful call you names and question your motives...indirectly of course. Most are quietly watching, smiling, and enjoying the misery of those breaking windows and being an attention whore.

With the chilly weather, the protests are all but dead, as if that group wanted to be uncomfortable they'd, you know, get jobs. A few will continue in warmer climates until they get arrested, or their drug dealer quits showing up, or Fuller House season two starts on Netflix.
