Not sure how many pitches Barnes, Knebel, and Torres had last night, but Scahill might have had the 9th inning tonight regardless of the score.

(5/31/2017 07:30:00 PM) - Al

A couple quick thoughts about MLB scouting.

First of all, they use 20-80, with 50 being "major league average." That's as stupid a scale as one can imagine. Some teams use a 2-8 instead. Yeah, that's how I'd adjust it.

There are a few players in the draft with incredible speed, I've seen 3 mentioned in the same sentence as Billy Hamilton. Their speed numbers? 60. 65, and 70. Would anyone have Hamilton at below an 80? I certainly would not.

There are several possible draftees that are "two way players," which despite what you're probably thinking, does not mean they like guys and gals (not that there's anything wrong with that), but that they pitch and play a position. That is not unique, but the strange thing is, despite many of these guys have 95-97 mph velocity when pitching, but their "arm" tool, when ranked as a position player, is only in the 50-60 range. Several OF's who do not pitch have an "arm" score of 65 or 70. I suppose they have to consider accuracy too, but wouldn't it be embarrassing to give a Bryce Harper or Jay Bruce a 50 because they are sometimes off target? The whole idea of scouting is to let your front office know what kind of potential a guy has.

Better question...how many know who Corey Knebel is?

SL releases Jon Broxton, whose terrible 2017 is likely 98% due to his .457 BAbip.

I would expect him to be signed within a week. His velocity is all but identical to last season. His dominating days are long gone, but he's plenty capable of contributing.

Trump arms those fighting ISIS...too controversial a stance for Obama...so he just left weapons behind when he ordered troops out of Iraq.

Yet with government spending, the question of how much is only ever answered with more. How much taxpayer funding do you need for welfare? More. How much is needed for paying school teachers? More. How much is needed for social services? More. How much taxpayer money do you need, period? More.

However much the government is taking today, it always wants more. And furthermore, the political Left is dedicated to guilt shaming you, via Weaponized Empathy, if you should disagree with them. How many Muslim refugees should be accepted by various Western countries around the world? More. Never is it a specific number, fixed and immutable, after which we might account our duty to human rights and dignity properly satisfied. Always it is more.

Read the whole thing, but let me cut to the ending for those impatient ones...it ain't enough. It's never going to be enough. If you give them "more" the result will be a simple demand..."more." Remember Act 10? The benefits were good, but what was needed? "More." Why? "More" is better.

(5/31/2017 11:45:00 AM) - Al

Just a quick note about the sudden cries that the Crew needs a LH reliever (or two) in the bullpen.

You casuals are embarrassing yourself.

The Brewers have the 6th best bullpen ERA in the NL, despite pitching the 2nd most relief innings. I will be the first to admit, if one were to build a "perfect" bullpen, you'd probably have a mix of all different types of arms, mostly hard throwers, some ground ball guys, and some RH, some LH.

This is much like the "they strike out way too much" argument. K's are a negative to scoring runs statistically...but they are such a minor negative as to be almost inconsequential. Know what's a far bigger negative? Making outs of any kind at a high ratio, which is exactly what OBP measures (or the inverse of OBP, but hence, I digress).

The Crew's pen has been forced to get just more than 11 outs a game on average. They certainly do not have room for a loogy, so while a lefty reliever that also gets RH hitters out would be dandy, it's like complaining about how Kate Upton looks in the dark...it doesn't matter and no one cares.

Last night, LH/RH matchups were pointless, as the far larger issue was the bullpen being asked to go 6+ innings. Those games usually just come down to a flip of the coin. Had they had a lefty out there, they may well have pitched the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, or so on.

In rural Ohio, people still have Trump signs up. I've never seen this kind of carry-over.--Davetv28

I just got back from IN, MI, IO, WI; same.--Salena Zito

I haven't really thought of it until now, but there are far more Trump signs up in the rural areas around here than there were Clinton signs in NOV.

On a related note, there are more homemade Walker signs up than total Trump signs.

Of course, I have it on good authority than Walker has no chance in the recall. Same ones that have been peddling one fib after another since Hillary lost after they insisted Trump had no chance for more than a calendar year prior.

And we're the stupid ones.

(5/31/2017 11:18:00 AM) - Al

The best part is, it makes them angry.

Why do they hate it? Because like their quest to kill coal, they want it because it's bad for the economy.

Openly rooting against jobs, comfort, and a strong economy? Their brand is misery, and selling misery in the form of a check the first of every month wins votes.

(5/31/2017 11:00:00 AM) - Al

Amen.

In fact, in the interest of brevity, I'd just skip to the "Grow the hell up" part.

We've seen their ilk before. Those Occupy hoodlums were so arrogant they set up "special places" where women could feel safe from sexual assault...kind of like, you know, almost anywhere not in an Occupy craphole.

Back when I was in high school, I had a teacher that scoffed at "wasting" so much money on a Star Wars style missile defense system. He said the idea of such a thing was preposterous. He wished they would spend that money on education. Note the mere thought of letting the taxpayer keep the money they earned was so ridiculous as to not even be considered.

Of course, many feel we're wasting money on defense because we already have enough nuclear weapons to blow up the world multiple times.

Why are they so against progress? Because they want the money spent selfishly, on themselves, rather than to protect our military and our nation.

Because they know better, and deserve it.

We remain stuck in the John Lennon response to terrorism. They blow us up, we sing Imagine.--Douglas K Murray

Even sadder? Many Dems are reading this and saying, "You betcha!"

Healthy as a horse, I tell ya.

Remember the "Weekend at Bernie's" comparisons last summer? She looks just like him in those "sunglasses."

Of course, they lied about it...what don't they lie about? In fact, telling the truth might have been a perfect way to soften her image, to make her grandmotherly, though her hellishly loud and mean rhetoric would have had to have gone away.

Instead of anti Trump stupidity, pictures of her and her grandkids, puppies...maybe even get some stock footage of her in a skirt, smiling (they probably would have had to have gone back a couple decades) and chatting with some white men and women about jobs.

The irony is, that's what Bill suggested, but he was vetoed by some Ivy League numbers cruncher. Because they know better, and all those white folks are rednecks and deplorables.

They have a message, it's just that no one likes it. Protest everything, social justice, and transgender bathrooms. That's it. That's not going to win them back WI, MI, and PA. --Bernie McGwirk, radio producer

I must admit, six months from the election, and a complete lack of a slogan, platform, and ideas...it's mind boggling.

The message seems to be NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! How does that appeal to their lost voters?--Melissa Francis

I would pay good money to see Liz Warren at the Iowa State Fair, eating meat on a stick, and see her trying to connect with voters as she talks down to them with her radical agenda.--Meghan McCain

Watching yesterday's Outnumbered, and they keep echoing my thoughts.

One thing I had not heard before, with many illegals leaving on their own, and ICE rounding up more at record rates, CO and UT both have insanely low unemployment rates, they are having trouble finding people to work, actually recruiting from neighboring states, companies are having to pay more so income is going up, housing values are going up...in a nutshell, all the good things folks have been saying would happen with tighter borders is already happening.

65% of incoming college freshmen identify themselves as middle of the road, conservative, or far right politically, smallest liberal numbers ever.

Tabitha Soren said it 3 decades ago...colleges are not nearly as conservative as people think. Sadly, they just keep quiet because they're afraid to make it publicly known for fear of retribution. Both Francis and Kennedy told stories of young women they know having to rewrite papers or keep political beliefs to themselves on campus. Much like people "coming out" as gay has helped their acceptance, college students should not hesitate to ID as conservatives and/or Republicans. They will find they are not the only ones.

Why are the liberal numbers so low? My guess would be the left's behavior since the election. Who wants to admit being a member of a violent, whiny, do nothing group.

As you enjoy your Memorial Day, and as I pointed out in my scheduled post early this AM, as well you should, be especially thankful for those who have given their lives, and those they left behind, so we can have the freedoms we enjoy today, and every day.

There will always be some who are unpatriotic, selfish goons. Those that share my beliefs did not spit on returning military personnel 50 years ago. Luckily for them, the fallen protected their rights as well...they're just far too simple to realize it.

5/29/2017 12:00:00 PM

(5/29/2017 09:57:00 AM) - Al

Yep.

Trust me, this will not end well for the left. Their foray into open, violent behavior coincides with law enforcement being afraid to look "mean" and subdue them before taking their criminal butts off to jail. The mere fact they insist on wearing masks tells you all you need to know...cowards gonna be cowards.

Soon, they will return to the days of old, when safety in numbers allowed them to throw rocks and bottles at police with little consequence because of safety in numbers...because they're so brave and righteous.

I always find it interesting when folks are shocked that a good economy leads to a good economy.

In North Dakota, at the height of the oil boom, people that stocked shelves or ran the register in grocery stores were making $20 an hour, because it was so difficult to find people. Supply and demand works, even when people do not want it to. Nothing is better for an area than good paying jobs, regardless of the industry they are in. Some are too selfish to understand that, but it is always the case.

Many would say that Memorial Day is not about cookouts and family gatherings, but I would say that is exactly what it is about. Our servicemen and women gave their lives to protect the rights and freedoms that give you the ability to enjoy this day with family. – Richard Ricky Raley, Paralyzed Veterans of America member

I have said almost this exact same thing, albeit, not nearly as eloquently, in the past couple years.

Do not let people guilt you into not saying Happy Memorial Day. Do not fail to enjoy the day off because it's a "somber" day. The hell with them.

Enjoy all the freedoms and gifts you enjoy because of the greatness of the USA. Let the negative nellies be negative...it's what they do, and why they are miserable.

If you'll remember, the two "big events"at Mizzou were:

1. A "KKK robe" hanging by a window.

2. An unproven allegation by a rabble rouser that someone had yelled a racial slur from the back of a pickup truck as he walked off campus.

The "robe" turned out to be a lab coat hung up in a lab, and the other incident, in which no witness even collaborated anyone riding in the back of a truck, never mind we have free speech in the USA, regardless of the vulgarity, never mind it took place off campus.

The easiest thing to do is to tell the snowflakes to worry about their grades and shut the hell up. Why colleges insist on trying to placate these crybabies is beyond all reason...of course, so are most college campuses. The extraordinary result of this is, normal students and parents decided they wanted nothing to do with a bunch of whiners have abandoned what has long been a beloved state university. A wise man predicted this long ago, and yet, the old media...wait for it...seemed to misread how the public would react...unexpectedly.

(5/28/2017 09:47:00 PM) - Al

Blazek and Woodruff both pitch well in AAA doubleheader.

Woodruff is not on the 40 and does not need to be until the offseason, so I doubt he will be promoted, until SEP at least. Blazek was taken off the 40 and cleared waivers, and is pitching nicely. Espino, Cravy, and Suter are on the 40 and also have been effective, despite pitching at altitude.

This may mean two things. One, the leash is probably uncharacteristically short for the big league bullpen...especially for those without options, as they are unlikely to be kept over the offseason anyway. Two, this depth may well allow the Crew to be sellers at the deadline even if they do stay in contention. I sure would not expect Knebel, Davies, or Barnes to go anywhere, but Torres, Garza, and maybe one other SP (I would guess Guerra or Anderson) could be on the block. Peralta could have value as either a SP or RP. It would also allow them to "throw in" a guy pitching nicely, like a Scahill for example, without much stress. Rob is not a guy that will bring back a prospect, but to a team with a crappy bullpen, it could be enough to close a trade.

Drake has been solid, except for a pair of outings in which he was awful, though yes, they were BAbip related, though his walk rate is very high too.

Al,

I have noticed that despite Braun reaching 10/5 status, fans are still posting trade ideas, even to teams like the Yankees, Nationals, and so on, teams we all know he'd never agree to a trade to. If someone presses them on this, they usually respond with "Wouldn't he want to go to a contender?" Considering that most seem to think its the Dodgers or Brewers, what's the point?

Mark

Casuals gonna be casual. I'd say Braun might consider an AL team like the Angels if his injuries continue, but that day ain't today.

I would agree any talk of a trade to any team not named the Dodgers is a pie in the sky.

Dems very unhappy about fake news that Trump told people "classified info" that had been in NY Times several times in past 6 weeks.

Dems have no concern about leaks from White House from career paper pushers.

One would almost think they have an alternative narrative to push.

The fact they are ignoring proven spying on citizenry by the previous administration, while continuing to cry wolf over everyday minutia (did you hear Kushner asked a question and was told it wasn't necessary?) that goes away after a couple days because they are fictional; pretty much tells you why the public sees the old media as uncredible.

The only crime is what the old media does every day...they create a story and then a few days later, move onto to the next made up thing.

The problem is, this is what they've been doing for months. Why do we think they're crying wolf?

Because they are.

5/28/2017 11:00:00 AM

It's different when they do it.

I agree.

But I'm glad they don't seem to get it.

Bono said W did more for Africa than Clinton ever thought of doing. The left pretended he never said it and the old media pretended he didn't.

Still friends, apparently.

I'm so old, I remember when W was not just Hitler, but people would compare him to Adolf and then apologize to Hitler for doing so. Looking back, one gets the feeling it may have just been a bit politically motivated.

(5/28/2017 12:30:00 AM) - Al

A cynical person might even say they are trying to decide who lives and who dies...perhaps they could call them death squads?

Irony.

It seemed like the whole team played pretty terrible today, including myself.--Greinke

He throws teammates under the bus with every team he plays for. He just makes sure he's critical of himself to avoid the scrutiny.

They don't even pretend to get it right.

Rather than pointing out the fake news, it's easier to point out what they do well. As soon as they hit one on the head, I'll let ya know.

Patriotic Americans love their country.

The former president and the old media? Got my doubts.

It's not American exceptionalism, it's American mediocreism.

Won a world war despite fighting on two sides of the continent? Yeah, but what'd they do the week before?!

5/27/2017 07:30:00 PM

(5/27/2017 07:07:00 PM) - Al

If I wasn't married.

Trish speaks the truth, and the answer is simple...cut waste, cut fraud, cut pet projects, add the line item veto, cut illegal immigration, change the current social programs to make them less costly (and yes, that includes Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid; the ones no one even considers because it's political suicide). Cut costs of prisons, national parks and forests, the post office, and a variety of others by paying private companies to run them, because if the government could run a successful business; socialism and communism would not always fail.

Cut, cut, cut. And then get serious about it.

It's just math. Trying to deny it is like trying to deny the sun or the wind.

Thames looks as unhealthy as Braun.

His falloff is dramatic since the first month. He's nowhere near 100%. Playing LF is probably the worst thing for him also.

(5/27/2017 05:30:00 PM) - Al

It's a pretty ugly story when you take a gander at the mess Obama left us.

The irony is, he didn't care about domestic policy either. It was all beneath him. All he did was raise money for candidates that would go on to lose.

1000 times over.

(5/27/2017 05:22:00 PM) - Al

Interesting to see how long Anderson is allowed to remain in the game with 110+ pitches going after 7. The Brewers have had an organizational philosophy of limiting pitchers to 110 or less for at least the past decade, maybe longer. He'll start the 8th, it would appear.

Counsell may be hoping for either an infield single or first pitch outs.

Rambling wife just walked down the steps for the first time in 8 days and crutched her way out to the awaiting van to take her to church.

I feel like my kindergartner just got on the bus for their first day.

On the bright side, 90 minutes free of having to fill her ice water.

I mean "getting to."

(5/27/2017 04:11:00 PM) - Al

Sogard's blooper falls in front of the LF, Arcia's deep line drive caught on the warning track.

It all balances out, for the most part, but Sogard is living right.

5/27/2017 04:11:00 PM

(5/27/2017 03:59:00 PM) - Al

The Rambling wife talked to her family a couple days ago. Still waiting for some fields to dry out for planting; after hay gets cut, forecasts change so the rain arrives to prevent it from being made in a timely fashion.

So in case you're wondering, agriculture still has the same challenges it did 5-20 years ago.

One of my clients told me something a few years ago that made a lot of sense. He said he never worried about hay getting wet, because that meant he was getting stuff done and he was getting rain. Obviously, you prefer it not to, as it loses quality and takes longer, but, it always does. He said some years he only had "good hay" and he had to feed his young stock the good stuff or buy lower quality stuff from others...it was so stressful, he just quit worrying about it.

Picked up pizza for lunch, stopped by the farmer's market looking for something for the Rambling wife. Only about 6 vendors, usually about 20 when I get there about 11. Many took the holiday weekend off, it would appear. Good for them.

(5/27/2017 03:00:00 PM) - Al

Life without parole is too much for a brainless little punk who took part in double digit murders? If anything, that's far too lenient. Why that waste of a human life is still inhaling oxygen that could better utilized by rodents, maggots, and unicellular fungi is a mystery to everyone on the planet except a bleeding heart cretin in DC.

Unless they're going to replace the sentence with one of one trillion years, I truly do not know what the hell they are thinking. What exactly do you have to do to merit a harsh sentence, as the left is throwing parades in honor of terrorists because they don't seem to think it's a serious offense unless the criminal is a Caucasian Republican.

Goodness gracious.

Cubs seem to have a lot of turmoil this season and most of it just seems to be an inability to communicate honestly  with the players and the press.

What's that old saying? You can't help but prosper when the streets are paved with gold.

All we heard last season was how good the offense was, but in reality, it was their ERA was a half run lower than anyone else's.

President Trump stops in Italy on his way back to the states to talk to the troops.

If you'll recall, Obama took selfies and giggled like a schoolgirl during Mandela's funeral.

You know, I'm beginning to think some of this "Obama is God, Trump is a dope" talk might just be a product of the old media which has been shown to lean just a bit to the left.

Another day, another embarrassing decision by a school.

Any parent that allows their kid in that idiot's classroom should be taken out back and asked what the hell they're thinking. Never teaching again is a given. People are in concrete boxes (and not even being served ice water with white linens!) for more intelligent acts.

Remember, we wonder why schools have not solved the bullying issue yet. It is quite likely directly related to the fact schools are by far the biggest bullies in existence.

Good freaking God.

If they fired every umpire in MLB and started over with chimpanzees off the street from remedial chimp class, they simply could not be an iota worse.

EDIT: As I have mentioned often since MLB decided the umpires were so historically inept they had to do something to make them less crappy, the umpires watching on replay act as if they have a vested interest in protecting the umpires on the field. Every time you see the replay booth take several minutes and still blow an obvious call, it is ALWAYS in favor of the call made on the field. Embarrassing and pathetic.

The Middle East was won in 2008, and was ignored because of politics. Surprisingly, despite numerous treaties and pallets of cash, the problem is now worse than ever.

With more people employed in WI than ever before, our biggest challenge isn't creating jobs, it's finding people to fill them.--Governor Walker

This is why the left hates him.

Dems fight tooth and nail against tax and spending cuts because they know they will work.

I'm so old, I remember when Obama said "full employment" was 5%. Per his math, Walker's rate means we have 164% of full employment in Wisconsin.

Because Walker is so damn evil.

Heard last night on the late local news:

More people will be traveling for Memorial Day this year than since 2005. Many people are looking for a way to make this holiday a little more relaxing.

(cut to person gassing up car) We are making our weekend more stress free by beating traffic. We're leaving at 5AM tomorrow morning.

Nothing says "fun, relaxing weekend" like getting up at 4.

I don't know why everyone is so tired and grumpy...I mean, we beat traffic!

5/26/2017 02:07:00 PM

(5/26/2017 01:57:00 PM) - Al

To paraphrase those that believe the Brewers should go on a "perennial rebuild*."

--We need to be patient. Build slowly and do it right.

--We won't contend until 2020 or 2021, and that's fine.

--In May mind you...Why don't we bring up these OF prospects to play while Braun is out? WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR!!!!

It's easy to change your mind when you don't really believe in anything.

The irony is, if they did bring up a youngster, if they went 0-4, they'd package them in a trade for "the next wave."

And you think I'm kidding.

*They always want to rebuild. As many of the prospects flame out (which always happens), they want to tear it down and start over. Rinse and repeat for infinity.

Merkel bragging today about how NATO leaders are so concerned about climate change, hinting that Trump is not...climate change has not killed 22 innocents in the last century.

They have found it is far easier to fight a fictional problem than a real one.

Braun goes on DL with another calf strain.

Guerra comes off the DL having recovered from a calf strain.

The Rambling wife was initially diagnosed with a calf strain, and she may have had one, but had knee surgery last week.

It's the "in" injury this year.

5/26/2017 01:16:00 PM

(5/26/2017 12:50:00 PM) - Al

Braun will head back to the DL with the same calf issue from which he just returned, the outfielder tells Haudricourt. “I knew, obviously, when I came back I wasn’t at 100% but I was hoping it was good enough,” said Braun. “I was optimistic I’d be able to work through it.”

Haudricourt writes that given the recurrence of the original injury, Braun is likely facing a DL stint that’ll be lengthier than the 10-day minimum. However, there has not yet been any indication of an exact timeline on his recovery. As Haudricourt point out, the Brewers can simply swap out Braun for right-hander Junior Guerra, who is expected to be activated from a calf injury of his own. Of course, that could be a short-term move, as flipping Guerra and Braun would leave manager Craig Counsell a bit short-handed in terms of position players.--MLBTR

I took a glance at which players have options last night and the consensus is that Sogard and Hughes each have one left. One or both of them could be optioned down if they want to play the "let's swap pitchers and position players" game as needed.

5/26/2017 12:50:00 PM

(5/26/2017 12:35:00 PM) - Al

Old media continues to have no idea why the public despises them, and why the Republicans keep winning.

What's funny is, every time they have an election to replace someone, the narrative is identical:

1. The left is a huge underdog, but may win because Trump is so unpopular. Dems are extremely motivated.

2. It's looking real good. Early voting is way up in urban areas, long a Dem stronghold.

3. Well, the Dem lost, but they never had a chance to win. In fact, the numbers were extremely positive.

Onto the next one. A little birdie tells me it may be an upset, because Trump is very unpopular there.

It's been well over 6 months from the election. The old and the left (but I repeat myself) are not one inch closer to figuring out why they lost an election they assumed they had won...not to mention the 1000 seats they've lost since 2008.

5/26/2017 08:00:00 AM

(5/26/2017 06:30:00 AM) - Al

I feel the same way about this as I do with states having a "rainy day" fund...in theory, it sounds like a well thought out plan.

However, it's the taxpayer's money, or in this case, the public's oil....it almost creates a bit of an increase in the price of gasoline and crude oil because the government is holding all that in reserve, as they are artificially lowering the supply available at any given time.

For those whose opinion changes often, as the breeze changes direction, or as the sun rises, it's a tough call. However, I am on record as believing in smaller, perhaps even tiny government. Therefore, while I can see the merit of having X amount held back, mainly for the military and defense purposes, I certainly am not a fan of having X be very much. As said, we have enough oil in North Dakota and Alaska to make those reserves in the southern US seem trivial.

How do I feel about politicians "body slamming" folks? As someone not swayed by silly things, rather one that follows a core of beliefs mostly involving freedom, a strong defense, and fiscal conservatism, I can't say I much care.

But enough about Al Franken...

Trump won MT by 20, Ginaforte is up 8 with 60% in, with mostly rural districts remaining, and to be blunt, they'd vote for the ghost of Ted Kennedy if had a R next to his name.

Not sure Gianforte was hurt by the bad publicity or not, many loved the fact he did what he did. Montana ain't San Francisco or Portland.

(5/25/2017 10:46:00 PM) - Al

Braun back to the DL. We'll have to see if they admit he returned early, or if he simply pulled the same muscle again.

One negative about the shorter DL is that instead of taking 15 days, it gives the option of returning after 10...ready or not.

Have to see if they just do a Guerra/Braun swap for a day and go from there, or if another move is forthcoming. If they only had 39 players on the 40, they might well bring up a catcher for a day or two (Susac is on the AAA DL, FYI), but creating a 40 man spot often leads to a lost player with the 40 so full of talent, so they may try and avoid that, if Pina's injury is minor.

If only someone would have warned them of this, over 5 years ago, and almost daily since. On a public site.

It's working as planned. The only thing that did not happen as expected is Trump won and the left is unable to spin it as the GOP's fault. Daily, the Dems sit there and wonder how they can keep defending a train wreck as it becomes apparent it will die on its own lack of merits. Every day, they are looking for a way out.

16 new emails in my business account. 14 of them are companies telling me their holiday hours.

While there may be a couple that said they are closing at noon or 1PM Friday because of the holiday weekend, most are simply informing me they will be closed Monday...Memorial Day.

Thanks for the heads up.

I truly feel sorry for those still defending Obamacare, and even moreso when MK Ham publicly embarrasses them.

It's dead. Insurers lose money by the millions, and are leaving the market. Many argue it's working exactly as planned, as step one to single payer (healthcare as efficient as the DMV).

The strange thing is, why the insistence to insist it's wonderful, as it implodes before their eyes.

Amen.

Even on Facebook, folks are reluctant to do the "same old thing" of changing their profile pics for a day or two to "show support."

One almost gets the feeling this is a 9/11 on a far smaller scale. In the days following 9/11, when we realized that we had been attacked out of pure envy, for no reason at all, except to kill as many innocents as possible; those calling for "a measured response" were almost nil.

You don't destroy evil with hugs. No one calls an exterminator and asks them to get rid of the unwanted pests by reasoning with them.

Because one side insists terror is awful and the other insists the death of innocents in a violent manner is just part of the peaceful awesome life we all desire. With plenty of immigrants, completely unvetted. Because that's just awful.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened had I become an FBI agent.

1. I would have never passed the physical requirements. I was lighter then, but at some point, my sprained foot would have turned the wrong way again and I'd have had to been "retested" later. It's been 24 years, and I still can't spend more than 2 minutes on a ladder without extreme pain.

2. That said, imagine they would have waived the requirements for me...this kind of thing would have been a daily Al moment. Heck, they probably would start a pool to predict when I was fooled by a line from Bullwinkle's Boris and Natasha.

What a novel idea. The medical lobbies refuse to even consider this. Why?

Right now, a cute short gal married to me has knee surgery; she has no idea how much it will cost until her insurance pays some, and she pays the rest.

Unlisted prices lead to higher costs. Not caring how much something costs leads to higher prices. If we could go to EZSurgery because their price list online was far cheaper than Midwest Surgery Center and Bicycle Repair, we would.

Why do you think lasix treatment has gone down over the last decade, and every other type of health care has skyrocketed?

The Dems proudly keep throwing out the same idea...ignore it, pretend it never happened, and all will be fine.

Well, their vote totals would go up, because right now, they are pacifist weenies on the subject, and folks that work for a living know it.

Howie Carr hit the nail on the head here...read the whole thing.

Money quotes:

Comrade Chris Matthews speaking over a live video feed from the blood-spattered Ariana Grande concert, the live screams of the terrified young girls in the background, as he says with disinterest:

“We’ll get the latest on that in a minute” — more screams — “but first, the shocking news in Washington tonight, the Washington Post reports that — ”

More fake news! But they can’t help themselves, the alt-left media have to stick to the script...

“It must also be noted in the recent months in Europe there have been a number of false flag plots where, uh, right-wing extremists have tried to frame Islamists for terrorism … .”

Stephanopoulos: “This is also likely to inflame anti-Islamic sentiment across Britain, across Europe.”
Martha Raddatz, whose wedding Barack Obama attended, agreed: “It will likely create backlash.”

When they're killing innocents at the pace they are, the terrorists do not need a bit of "help" from extremists. You can pretend it's not Islam terror, you can even not say the words for 8 years while sending them pallets of cash and sucking up to them. At the end of the day, they're still terrorists, and they still need to be taken care of.

By the way, where are all those people now that insisted Obama did not kick the can down the road his entire presidency?

I told you so.

BA talking about the best catcher he ever saw in the minors never making the majors.

Years ago, Ned Yost IV spent a season playing for the Woodchucks, a summer wood bat league in Wausau. I saw him play in 2 games. He was huge, often 6+ inches taller than the batter, and built like a NFL player. He looked like if the team bus broke down, he could lift it to the side of the road and await repair. Never saw a ball he did not block. Every throw to 2B between innings landed on the bag. He would jump up and fake a throw to 1B, and the runner was dive back in full panic.  Once, a runner was sent home with 2 outs, and was out by 10 feet. Yost stood there with the ball in his glove. The runner came to a complete stop and waited politely for the tag. I do not think he felt a collision would yield a positive result.

He was not just good, he was superb.

Never got past A+ ball.

Got up to pee this morning. See squirrel in bird feeder. Open bathroom window, squirrel jumps to deck, bird feeder tumbles to ground.

Late morning now, go in bathroom to pee. Glance down on ground, chipmunk sitting in bird feeder, happily chomping away. Two birds, one on hook that usually holds feeder, one on deck rail, sitting, appear puzzled and unhappy.

There's a movie to be made here, but I'm afraid the title alone would put me right into therapy.

Sardinas almost clears waivers.

O's will likely try and slip him through shortly. Building AAA depth. The Dodgers and Blue Jays each did a lot of this last year. It makes sense, but it has yet to yield results for anyone. Acquiring guys that are not good enough to be on anyone else's 40 man just gives you a lot of guys that are correctly placed in AAA.

Sardinas is still plenty young enough to be a nice pickup, however.

Hold hands and sing folk songs. That is still all they got.

Their hatred of the military leads them to having a world view that is completely out of step with reality. They keep wanting to "compromise" and discuss it with the terrorists.

First, the budget isn’t being cut. Indeed, Trump is proposing that federal spending increase from $4.06 trillion this year to $5.71 trillion in 2027.--Dan Mitchell

I have seen many "sky is falling," "end of the world as we know it" posts already on social media. The author of said posts are either lying, or being misleading. Feel free to mention this. In some cases, they will be angered, but if they are allowed to get away with untruths, it will lead to continued untruths...see "if you want to keep your doctor" followed by "if you want to keep your plan." When we insisted that was not the case, we were called racists. We were right. Stand firm in your beliefs.

In this "gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme" cultural shift, where "someone else" pays and "everything should be free," "cutting the budget" almost always means "not getting as large an increase as we would like."

This is why the debt doubled in 8 years of Obama, despite his best efforts to suck every dollar from those who earned it through "revenue enhancements."

I'm still waiting to find a side by side comparison of Obama's and Trump's speeches after a terror attack. Obama all but blamed the victims, asked for understanding and peace, and used several words that many (including small town boys like me) would have to look up, if only we cared enough about what he said.

Trump called them evil losers.

The difference is striking. The elites will look at them and think Trump is a darn dope. Middle America will say "It's about damn time," and feel better about their vote.

The four certainties of USA politics
1. Trump has no chance of winning. Pence, Carson, and Palin are fools for endorsing him.

2. Hillary is not only healthy, but will be the most qualified president ever. And, she is beloved by all.

3. Trump did not really win. It was all Russian hacking. I mean collusion. I mean influence. Proof? No, none at all. What's your point?

4. The GOP is falling apart. The Dems have never been so motivated.

Looks like he has overcome any supposed issues, and given he was drafted a year ago and is at A+, appears to be doing fine.

Somewhere in the northeast USA, the elite left rolled their eyes and said "This is why Trump won."

The funny thing is, the Rambling son had a 6-8 foot round inflatable pool until he was 7 or 8, and we enjoyed it together for hours all summer. At some point, I even learned how to "shock" the pool and keep it from being green and algae filled. We'd hit a beach ball back and forth, and it would fly out every 30 seconds or so, but before it would hit the ground, the Rambling son would be out running after it.

A tank would be far more sturdy, but they often get holes in them...they are just like an aquarium, they have to be perfectly level or they spring a leak right away, as water is very heavy and puts all the pressure on the lowest point.

5/23/2017 01:46:00 PM

(5/23/2017 11:30:00 AM) - Al

You mean it isn't free?

I hope they do it, it fails (well, that isn't even a question), and they have to come begging to the feds for cash. The federal government informs them to live within their means and figure it out themselves. In the meantime, many Californians "vote with their feet," leading to booming economies in Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and maybe even Colorado. And a bankrupt, failed, well gosh darn, how did that happen Golden state.

We've seen what happened in Detroit, what is currently happening in Chicago, and so on. It's not a debate, it's only a matter of when.

(5/23/2017 11:00:00 AM) - Al

I am thrilled to see someone finally admit these entitlements, which make up about half the federal budget, are a problem and have to eventually be taken care of.

However, note the hatred and attacks the mere idea of taking less money from those who earned it generates. It's all they got.

Yep.

They only have negativity. They haven't had a new idea in at least 20 years. Obama only won because of his speaking ability and the fact no one could point out how stupid his slogans were without being called a racist.

Why are they so anti everything? No alternative means you either stay silent or complain.

5/23/2017 09:30:00 AM

(5/23/2017 08:00:00 AM) - Al

Well, they have no sense of humor.

Ignorant folks aren't gifted in some ways and lacking in others. They are often deficient in every single area.

5/23/2017 08:00:00 AM

(5/23/2017 06:30:00 AM) - Al

Amen.

Nothing is more cowardly than these random acts of terror, designed to maim, kill, or injure whoever happens to be in the vicinity. You are never going to reason with or appease terrorist cowards.

Mike Moore said years ago fighting such attacks are just a waste of time, because there will always be losers with a ideology that feel they will be martyrs for eternity. He was partially correct, there will always be terror attacks.

Cowards tend to sour quickly when they see cohorts and buddies getting thrown in prison and shot through the head. Some will be shot, some will be captured. The harder you go after them, and the more freedom you give law enforcement and the military, the more will slink away, as they are timid, meek, and fearful by nature. When the going gets tough, they act a lot like the Occupy losers and other "protesters" in the USA...when you're out camping, doing drugs, and assaulting coeds, it's easy to "believe in your cause." When the weather turns mildly uncomfortable, the fun lessens considerably...even moreso when painful death is a high probability. The only difference is, one tries to create havoc, one tries to execute trusting souls.

One dead terrorist saves scores of innocents. It also frees the good guys to move onto to the next one, and is a huge deterrent to the wannabees. Not to mention, being aggressive is always far better than sitting back and justifying the dead by insisting "well, more people die in bathtub falls than from terrorism."

There's a reason that leading from behind BS looks an awful lot like not giving a damn.

(5/22/2017 07:59:00 PM) - Al

Brewers will make a decision with Blazek soon. He has a 2.53 ERA in a tough pitcher's park and is striking out just short of a batter an inning, while only allowing 1 HR in 21 frames.

His walks are high, but many pitchers start nibbling when at altitude. If Blazek was still on the 40, it'd be tough luck for him, as teams don't "owe" players on the 40 anything. But, he's not, and he's 28...Stearns won't let him sit down at AAA as a nonroster player if he has multiple teams interested in him to pitch in the majors. His peripherals are not as good as Espino's, not even close, but his end results considering his home park are outstanding.

5/22/2017 07:59:00 PM

(5/22/2017 04:00:00 PM) - Al

Not only is it unusual for a journalist to admit they were wrong (he's not old media), the fact Trump opened up China to US beef (in a few months mind you) is great for those who raise cattle.

We buy most of ours from the Rambling in laws, but don't get over to their place often enough. We also buy frozen ground beef patties from Aldi and Wal Mart for the grill, because they are really good and do not fall apart.

I googled up beef futures and found this chart, which shows beef is up 0.5-3% since they opened this morning.

Just for asking. Or, looking at it another way, why didn't anyone ask before?

5/22/2017 04:00:00 PM

(5/22/2017 03:00:00 PM) - Al

I forget who said it, but one of the guys on Outnumbered last week summed it up perfectly:

If President Trump cures cancer this week, they'd say, yeah, what did he do last week?

Pull a Governor Walker, hold your head up, and keep fighting. Negative people are gonna be negative. The hell with them. Don't worry about them making stuff up...they're making stuff up because they know they're losing. Being called Hitler is a compliment...that's all they got.

Never forget, Republicans opposed Obamacare because they knew it wouldn't work. Dems oppose Trump's tax cuts because they know they will work. Same reason Dems loudly opposed Act 10. If they wanted to be fiscally responsible and let people keep the money they earn, they would not be on the left.

By the way, new churches would be far more successful if they stopped trying to go after the "unchurched" but those that are not completely happy with their current church.

Why? Think about it. You started a movie theater. Who do you try and get to patronize your theater?

1. Those that never go to movies.

2. Those that go to movies regularly.

If you go after #1, I wish you lots of luck. The Rambling parents never went to a movie the last 40 years of their life. They had no interest. They were perfectly happy not going to the movie theater.

Most people that do not go to church are perfectly happy not going to church. The fact people think they are unhappy, or the fact some people think they should go to church are probably much or all of the reason they don't go to church.

The folks to go after are the ones who go to movies, but are not completely happy with the experience. I know I say this often, but you know who does this? Successful, growing churches. The others? Doing the same stuff that made them unsuccessful and stagnant. Doubling down.

Next time, I'm telling you, it'll work.

Trump in Saudi Arabia, Pence at a US college. One went to foreign turf and spoke to intolerant, dogmatic extremists; other went to Western Asia.--Hale Razor

Granted, the Saudi welcome parade did not have burning USA flags or cursing at the president like the CA Dems convention.

I am far from a political expert, but I have been right often in the past 8 years...of course, I just predicted Obama's course of action would be devastating to the Dems and the economy.

That said, watching from afar, nowhere near the northeast USA, being a Midwestern boy, not part of the beltway elite, this past weekend has the potential to be one of the best for Republicans in ages.

1. Trump is still not President Hillary.

2. Pence spoke to a bunch of spoiled millennials at Notre Dame and about 100 of the 2000 graduates got up and left, because they are such incredible wimps they cannot even stand to hear an opinion that differs from their own about anything. This display was called "heroic" and "the resistance" by many in the old media. How will it play in Peoria?

Buncha rich snowflakes walked out on the vice president? The hell with them. Good luck with that first job wussy boys and girls.

3. The left will proudly look at this and insist the sky is falling. Most moderates and independents will look at this and insist it's a good start, and that next time, they should get serious about cutting them.

{For those keeping score, since Election Day, when a hated candidate ran a horrible campaign and lost to a very beatable candidate, this is the 11,475th time we have experienced the end of the world as we know it.

The irony is that we all feel fine.}

4. What the old media claimed the tea party was, the Dems have become.

That's the most accurate summary of the hypocrisy of the left that I have ever read.

Chanting profanities against the president? Burning American flags? Public threats of violence toward politicians?

Surely they see the irony in begging those in flyover country...who they openly despise as hicks and rednecks...to chip in and pay for their crap.

Too bad they did not have a liberal who would spend money on anything except the military in office for 8 long years to pass this waste.

The apology tour is over.

Our president actually said the word "terrorism." Can you imagine? I think this is a classic case of twisting the numbers to prove a point you want to prove.

K's are a negative, but a very tiny one. And, they're being dishonest as far as results.

APR--9.7K per game, 5.4 runs a game.
MAY--8.6K per game, 5.4 runs a game.

At first glance, any improvement is microscopic. And, let's not forget, Thames, Shaw, and Braun have missed time in May. That could well be the reason for fewer K's, as their PA's have mostly been taken by guys who aren't as good, but K less.  Some pitchers do not miss bats as much either, but that would involve far more research than I care to invest.

(5/20/2017 09:05:00 PM) - Al

As is the case with Arizona, Milwaukee has easily outperformed expectations thus far. The Brewers entered Saturday having posted the same record as Arizona (25-18, with a plus-34 run differential), and their success is a “potential nightmare” for general manager David Stearns, one executive told Rosenthal. It’s doubtful Stearns believes the franchise’s rebuild is complete, yet owner Mark Attanasio might push to add, not subtract, if Milwaukee hangs around the playoff race in the coming months, per Rosenthal. To their credit, the first-place Brewers currently rank among the majors’ top 10 teams in runs scored (second), wRC+ (eighth) and pitching fWAR (eighth).--MLBTR

I don't think Rosenthal or the other executive understands "nightmare," to say the least. If Stearns feels the team's success is a fluke, he can just continue to build as he has been. If the roster and winning percentage were the same as it is now and the date was AUG 20th, the most obvious additions would be a 2-3 bullpen pieces (a loogy for sure), a bench bat with some pop, and maybe a spot starter/long man. That would cost them nothing of merit, certainly no top 30 pieces in the organization. Or, they could easily just deal guys like Jungmann, Rivera, and Aguilar, players who are out of options anyway. If they would pick up a RH hitting 1B/LF/RF for example, Aguilar would be a duplicate.

As Stearns said a month ago, trimming the 40 man is already damaging, as every time a move is made, it seems, that player is claimed. Next season, they will have 6-7 more youngsters that have to be added. Sure, they'll have a few FA's contracts expire, but those scenarios have already been gone over.

You never hear a crack dealer saying "What am I gonna do with all this crack?" --Chris Rock

Much of the media acts like nothing has ever been planned for. I promise you, there's a list or spreadsheet or some document with a 2018 40 man roster and a 2019 40 man roster. When they traded Jeffress and Lucroy, they happily accepted a couple players who had to be protected on the 40 before the 2017. When they traded for Shaw, they knew they had to have additional kids who did not have to be protected. It doesn't take much to figure out the Crew has far more OF's in the system than they will ever use in MIL. Some of them will wash out and some will be traded. There's no such thing as too much talent.

I'm not 100% sure how MLB salary works, but I do know players are credited with "days of service," not games. I assume Espino will receive 2 days (FRI/SAT) but Cravy will receive 3 days (SAT-MON) for just a single game (SUN).

He may well stay up longer, but Cravy could not have wished for a better situation service time and pay wise.

If you google up Cubs' game or Cubs' weather (for some reason, it will not link), many complaints from Cubs' fans about why the game was postponed today. It rained 0.13 inches in Chicago today, and was far warmer than yesterday, low 60's all day. They are saying the game was postponed because the Cubs' bullpen is in such bad shape and they were afraid to have delays.

At best, it would appear some gamesmanship was involved, as the makeup date is right before the all star break, so they can play some roster games at that time to have extra pitching on hand.

With the off day MON, the Crew could choose to do any of several things, though the weather looks near perfect for tomorrow. Adam reported the Cubs did not want to play a split doubleheader tomorrow because they could not have broadcast the late game (ESPN exclusivity), so they chose to reschedule it on a THU afternoon in JUL...thousands of fans who paid $40-200 for tickets on a SAT in May will either be unable to attend or have a very tough time doing so.

The Cubs might as well just announce the game was rescheduled because they don't give a monkey's crap about their fans and simply do not want to refund any TV money.

(5/20/2017 07:16:00 PM) - Al

BUMPED, update near bottom.

Espino down, Cravy up.

It's a puzzler why this did not happen yesterday after the game. I am surprised they didn't have Paolo and Tyler fly in together on THU with this in mind. Paolo was not going to pitch today or tomorrow regardless. What if they would have played 22 innings today with 3 rain delays?

By the way, Cravy thinks it is unfair Espino only got 1 start...

ADDED: Adam reports Cravy may have been available for today's game, as the team usually waits until the player "physically arrives" in the city before announcing it.

That makes more sense. I'm certainly not more alert on roster construction that the braintrust.

I was hoping Adams would end up in MIL last offseason before they signed Thames. He hits RHP almost as well as any 1B in the game. He did so well with SL until they started nitpicking on him. He's the perfect case of a guy who does the big things well and the little things not so much. By going to ATL, he'll almost certainly be available next offseason as well.

Brewers rained out today, game will be made up July 6th, a THU, at 1:15.

Brewers finish a 3 game series with BAL at Miller Park WED night 7/5, play in Chicago THU, and then fly to NY to play a 3 game series before the all star break.

5/20/2017 12:30:00 PM

(5/20/2017 10:00:00 AM) - Al

I found it odd no Brewers were mentioned, and then it occurred to me...they won't be sellers if they continue to win at this pace.

Of course, we do not know if they will. Also, Billy Beane made some trades even when his teams were in the winning part of the success cycle...he would say he could not afford to let a veteran player leave for nothing, and the youngsters he received helped him fill the gaps when he lost the vets.

When you looked closely though, he always dealt from depth, and often traded relief pitchers and bench bats...players other teams tended to overvalue at the time far more than today.

Billy Beane had a lot more success before he had 29 other Billy Beane types as his peers.

I can understand wanting to give your kids something to do in the summer, but giving them 14 hours of activities a day? Pathetic. Kids should have plenty of time to be kids; whether than means reading, biking, mowing lawns for spending money, whatever.

About five years ago, we asked the Rambling son what he did one June day. The Rambling wife and I were both working full time, and other than occasional swimming trips or bike rides with the neighbor kid his age, and a week at his grandparents, he was on his own. He said he had decided he was going to teach himself how to code. We kind of scoffed at him, asking what he would do when he got stuck. He said he already had been a couple times, but just googled it until he figured it out. Sure enough, while he is not a master, he knows how to code better than almost anyone who is not in IT or has taken actual coding classes.

(5/19/2017 09:02:00 PM) - Al

Braun eligible to come off DL SUN, but I would assume the Crew will take advantage of the off day MON before activating him TUE. Giving him an extra couple days and avoiding him playing LF on a wet track seems wise.

No word tonight about replacing Espino, though I assume he'd be unavailable until at least TUE, so keeping him around seems like an odd choice. Bringing up someone for the rest of the Cubs series, then replacing that player with Braun, and then activating Guerra before his scheduled start on THU would be the best way to maximize the active roster.

One would think Espino and Franklin would be the bottom men on the totem pole, though as I have pointed out, Franklin long term is better than Sogard long term in my opinion. I believe I read Eric still has an option remaining, so when/if he cools off, he can go down this season...he was not on the 40 and was on a minor league deal this year, so he has not used one yet in 2017.

If they stay in contention, losing Franklin is just one of those things. However, if they go back to where we expected, it's a shame to lose him.

(5/19/2017 08:38:00 PM) - Al

The offense keeps getting the attention, and at 2nd in runs scored in the NL, it should. However, 5th in runs allowed is impressive too.

Considering 5 teams make the playoffs, 2nd and 5th is almost certainly good enough to be in contention and usually make it. While I doubt they will stay at those levels; their ability to withstand injures to Braun, Shaw, and Thames, plus a longer stretch by Guerra, is pretty impressive.

Jhan Marinez claimed by Pirates. Won't find out if he has right to be a FA or not.

I hate to lose him, he's good good stuff. They effectively chose the future of Espino over him, as Peralta could have just started today.

If it was 10-2, we'd probably see Peralta on the mound when the game resumes. Assuming Scahill will not return, we might well see an inning at a time guys; though one could wonder if Barnes and Knebel are available...both have been worked heavily of late...I think Jacob has pitched 5 of 6 days and Corey 4 of 5 (though I could be wrong, I did not look it up).

I'd like someone to explain to me why they allowed play to continue for an inning or two with standing puddles on the infield and pouring rain.

Embarrassing.

If Schwarber catches that ball, you know they're still playing too.

Weather Underground has the rain ending between 4:30 and 5 with very little rain accumulation to come. Probably be good to go by 5:30 or so, maybe even earlier...with the prerequisite "unless a storm develops out of nowhere."
