I'm going to guess the Bucks take Frank Ntilikina with their 1st round pick. He's a young 6-5 French point guard with massive upside and a 6-10 wingspan. I am assuming the new GM Hort follows the "high risk, high reward" of his mentor, Hammond.

But I was told the Brewers did not have enough room for draft picks, never mind undrafted FA's!

It's the economy stupid.

And the optimism. Do not fail to disregard that. After 8 years of it patiently being explained to the rubes that 6% was "full employment" and that "spreading the wealth" and "revenue enhancement" were positives, small business owners and those that work for a living love hearing about lower taxes and fewer regulations.

I've checked about 15 mock drafts today:

--Nigel Hayes is only taken in 1 of them, at #58. Doubtful he will be picked. Another Nigel is likely to be taken late in the 2nd.

--Koenig not taken in any, not mentioned as possible.

--No consensus on Bucks 1st round pick, most go with a tall, very young big man. Zach Collins of Gonzaga would be a near perfect fit, but he is set to go somewhere between 11th and 14th, the Bucks pick #17.

--More consensus on Bucks 2nd round pick than 1st. Edward Sumner of Xavier a popular choice. He's a 6-5 PG who defends, rebounds, and drives well, not yet an outside shooter.

--If I were the GM, I would consider moving up in the 2nd round to take Caleb Swanigan of Purdue. He is not a long or skilled player, but he is a workmanlike type who can rebound, defend, and score without having sets/plays set up for him. I've seen him anywhere from the late 1st to the mid 2nd.

Koenig is not even close to the best shooter in the draft. I question if he's top ten.

I have not seen a mock draft that has his being drafted. That said, players make tons of money in Europe. A few undrafted players make NBA rosters each year. I could certainly imagine him as a backup point guard.

It's not just Pelosi.

Obama spent 8 years complaining about all that was "wrong" with the USA and going around the world apologizing for what makes it great. Sanders thinks the socialism solves all ills, despite historical evidence to the contrary; and Schumer, who has made himself the new voice of the party, simply says everything Trump proposes is bad; even if it means saying things like "Comey should be fired, I can't believe he fired Comey" within days of each other.

Negativity, unpatriotic behavior, the answer to everything is "tax and spend;" being totally out of touch with middle America on social issues, including open borders, legal abortion until seconds before birth, far too much emphasis on LGTB issues, and a constant "we know better than you because you're so stupid" attitude is at the top of the list, but the list is long.

(6/21/2017 09:28:00 PM) - Al

A couple emails asking if I think Peralta is really injured.

As Doug used to say, the player has to sign a injury statement and so does a trainer or doctor, so I assume he is. However, this time of year, almost every player could honestly sign such a one's 100%.

Neither are most construction and road workers, or roofers; who often only work 6-8 months a year, often 60-70 hours every week the weather cooperates. They fight through it, and wait for a rainy day to rest up and hope they feel better. Of course, if they put on shingles a bit slower, odds are no one even notices. If Braun jogs to 1B and gets thrown out by a step, people see that.

Giving Wily time off and the ability to go pitch a while in meaningless minor league games might well be just what he needs. The "time" aspect of this is a bit strange...if he was injured, why the delay in announcing it? Did they try to DFA him and he said "Hey, I'm hurt. I need to be talk to my union rep." Who knows? Guys do this all the time. You may recall Brandon Kintzler suddenly discovered an injury after being sent down a few years ago. They called him back up, DL'd him, and then outrighted him when he declared himself healthy. Kintzler is still effective in MIN, but I don't think the Crew felt he was trustworthy (and, if memory serves, they needed a 40 man spot).

Here's a simple idea...quit your bitching, and either cut money elsewhere, or go to Marquette county and ask them how they do it.

Teacher's unions have been claiming for years the only fix is spending more money, so they've done it, and guess what? No improvement. Why?

Throwing money at a problem does not work. It never has, and it never will. The only ones that think that way are simply looking to punish the successful.

6/21/2017 05:21:00 PM

(6/21/2017 04:51:00 PM) - Al

Suter will not be activated until at least tomorrow. This would seem to indicate a move is in the works like a trade (Peralta?) or trying to outright someone (Franklin?) and seeing if he is claimed.

In all my years of doing Ramblings, I never recall a Brewers' player showing up at the park without a roster spot. You often hear after the fact a player has been up for a day or two, waiting at the Pfister for a call that it is OK to come to the park.

Villar and Braun both begin rehab tomorrow with the Timber Rattlers. Those kids should be eating good for a few days.:) Both could be back in the majors as early as next TUE. Brinson and Franklin would seemingly be on the cusp, though they cut cut back to 12 pitchers as well.

Brent Suter is at Miler Park, no move announced yet.

Jesus Aguilar taking grounders at 3B as well, per Adam.

Many are assuming Peralta, but I might guess Davies is being removed from the rotation and either Suter or Espino will start SUN, or both will pitch out of the bullpen for now and another pitcher (Jungmann?) will be brought up to start.

Hey, I am a contrarian.

Cloyd is 30 and does not have much of a ceiling, but he has been spectacular in recent times in AAA, and his BB/K ratios and HR/9 are the highlight of his resume. Until the Crew fills that 40th spot on their 40 man, any veteran reliever is possible.

Cloyd's "fastball" was 86 in 2013, and 90 this season, so he has made some adjustments over the years.

6/21/2017 02:07:00 PM

(6/21/2017 01:36:00 PM) - Al

The Brewers won't have their AAA team in Colorado Springs after the 2018 season. The AAA club will move to San Antonio, with the rookie league Helena team (coincidentally, also a Brewers' affiliate) moving to the altitude of CS.

The Crew may not keep those affiliations, as the Astros want SA to be their AAA team, but, though there will always be a "worst" AAA team, it will not be as extreme as Colorado Springs. MIL would love to have a closer home at a modern facility with neutral conditions. But, they do not have the tradition or history to do much more than ask politely and beg. AAA teams also much prefer winning, and until this year, the Crew has used their AAA team for development, and not worried about wins and losses.

Time will tell if they are able to get a better match or if they just get stuck with who is left. The effect on the big league team is minimal. Doug was said to actually prefer CS to a couple western options (Albuquerque and Fresno were said to be the teams) due to proximity to a major airport and ability to get to Milwaukee in a few hours.

(6/21/2017 12:57:00 PM) - Al

Greg Monroe "opts in" to his player option for next year, meaning the Bucks will be close to the salary cap whether or not Spencer Hawes opts in or out, and/or if Tony Snell is brought back.

I would say this makes the Bucks more likely to move expensive players not in the "core," which would include John Henson, Mirza Teletovic, and Matthew Dellavedova. I really enjoy Telly and Delly, but tough decisions are bound to have to take place when you have Middleton and Giannis making $36M by themselves.

Forgot the GA special election was today, haven't been on Twitter for awhile.

Handel's party's turned decidedly festive: mayor of nearby Roswell hops on stage, beer in hand, to predict a win and read out early results.--Politico

Handel is the Republican and the only candidate that can vote in the race, as the Dem does not live in the district. And yes, I'm being serious. Handel is up with 53% with about half the vote in, but I don't know if it's rural GA or metro areas that have not been counted.

Noted investor Charles Payne said MSNBC was disgusted and complained it had been a rainy day and that "Dems don't vote in the rain."

Dem outspent Handel by 7x, though PAC money balanced that out somewhat.

(6/20/2017 02:30:00 PM) - Al

I have briefly talked about this before, but I have never went in depth on it. We do not know if the Brewers will remain in contention, or even over the .500 mark. If they do, I certainly do not expect any franchise altering trades. However, a minor addition or two, a bench bat (sorry, an addition to the position player group), a bullpen piece (maybe even two) could probably be expected.

The Brewers, like all teams, can only protect 40 players in the offseason. Right now, their 40 man roster has 39 players on it. They will have to add 5-9 prospects to it (Woodruff already has been, so perhaps on the low end). Usually, teams lose several free agents each offseason, but the Brewers have very few of the traditional type of FA's (6+ years experience, expiring contract), so they will have to find room in other ways; either through trades, nontenders, or not offering players a major league contract.

So, basically, a trade involving Brett Phillips or any true prospect, is very unlikely. However, there are others either on the 40 or that will have to be added to the 40 to be protected from the Rule 5 draft that could be dealt, or risk losing them for nothing, either in minor league free agency or the Rule 5.

Two quick lists, one I will call "bottom feeders" offense intended, they are on the 40 man, but not the 25 man, and are not considered top prospects. However, any or all may have nice major league careers, but probably will never be stars.

The 2nd is a list of guys who will have to be added to the 40 in the offseason or risk being lost in the Rule 5. I will asterisk the "prospects" that are ranked in the top 30 by, as those are far more likely to be protected. And no, I am not 100% positive on this list, as rules are sometimes tough for the layman to follow.

Bottom feeders on the 40 man
Cravy (AAA DL)
Houser (AAA DL, will miss season due to injury)

Rule 5 eligible
F Peralta*
D Williams* (will miss season due to injury)
G Cooper
J Betancourt

Stearns says there was interest in Feliz, but salary made it not happen, hence, h was released.

DS has shown little interest thus far in eating salary to, in effect, "buy" a prospect or two. Not sure if that's a rule he lives by or if he just has not found the right deal.

Feliz has had good velocity, but his fastball location was way off, and he never was able to get anything going with his breaking ball. He'll probably have a dozen teams interested in him, because you can't teach 96 mph. He might even end up with a 40 man spot from the get go.

Just saw one of these know it alls patiently explain to us numbskulls that the Brewers won't be signing all their draft picks this year because...they don't have enough roster spots in the minors.

Now, in reality, no team ever signs every pick, I think last season the Crew signed 37 of 40, a very high amount. This season, they drafted a lot of high ceiling high schoolers, who are unlikely to sign, as they hope to go to college and emerge much higher draft picks. They likely drafted a couple of them just in case a high pick is found to be injured on his pre draft physical and signs for well ls than expected.

The irony here is, they have signed 6 undrafted free agents, which, if they do not have enough roster spots for the drafted players, they certainly do not have enough for any of those, making his entire hypothesis a load of crap.

Every team will make room for players they want. Roster spots are not a concern for any club, as teams use the minor league DL as a taxi squad, as players do not have to be injured, there's no one checking on that stuff. It's all just fellas proving how little they know by bragging about how much they know.

The 34-year-old Hardy isn’t exactly an irreplaceable cog at this stage of his career, evidenced by his .211/.248/.308 batting line in 239 plate appearances.--MLBTR

Been a sharp decline for JJ, who is a good example of why teams have to be careful when expecting players past their mythical prime of 27 to continue producing at a respectable level.

He's still above average in the field, worth about 20 runs (per UZR) and 11 runs (per DRS) since 2015, but being worth 6 runs in the field a season does not make up for getting out 75% of the time. One has to wonder if he'll just call it a career after this year, as his contract is up and it's difficult to believe any team will see him as an everyday player at 35. He hasn't even put up a 750 OPS since 2011...and only a 700 OPS once since 2014.

I love it when people tell it like it is.

History will nickname Obama's presidency "The Fiction Years," or spomething even less kind. From healthcare to foreign policy, it was just one lie after another, with info and scoops promised to the old media that happily spread the fibs as fact, and never mentioned pallets of cash or the fact that your plan will be gone and your doc may not be affiliated with your new plan.

Because they know better.

Under Bernie, you'd be miserable (you would be anyway, because we all know the economy would fall apart...they make everyone "equal" by making everyone poor...well, you can't make everyone successful) AND you'd either stink or be googling "how do I make deo at home" within a year of his killing the American dream and then blaming "bad luck" for the results.

Not as good as Nelson's, but Mike Blazek goes 7.2 frames and gives up 2 runs at Colorado Springs...though some may argue that's a better performance given the altitude. 3.42 ERA for the season, but his previous start at Colorado Springs was rough...if you remove that one, he has a 1.80 ERA for the campaign.

I'm sure plenty of teams wish they would have claimed him when he was removed from the 40 earlier this season. Amazingly, Jungmann is also pitching well in his first 4 outings at AAA (1.27 ERA, 24-10K/BB), as is Wang, who has been used solely in relief this season (1.70 ERA, 23-11 K/BB, and a .150 BAA versus LH hitters).

(6/18/2017 04:15:00 PM) - Al

The funny thing is, even though Nelson went a good inning longer than Brewers' SP's usually do, he still did not hit the magic number of 120 that many teams allow their SP's to hit a dozen times a season, and don't even think twice about.

I know a few years ago, someone kept track of all the pitchers that went 120+ pitches for a season and their next starts was about a run higher ERA than average...and two starts afterward was also well higher; about 2/3rd's or 3/4th's of a run. Hopefully, Jimmy will not be bothered.

I would not have been surprised at all if the Crew had tomorrow or THU off, giving him an extra day of rest between starts, but given they do not, I did not think they would bring him out for the 9th. The 8th was not a surprise at all, as he did not even have 100 at that point. It's also interesting to note Knebel has been rested on day 3 twice in a row now after pitching back to back. I assume this is a result of the accumulation of his work up to this point, and maybe with a side of his high pitch innings (on average). As Billy Beane said, strikeouts are a "pound of flesh"...they always take 3 pitches, and often 5-7, or even more.

(6/18/2017 01:49:00 PM) - Al

Overton is interesting for a number of reasons.

--Despite horrible overall numbers, lefties put up a .188/.200 line against him this season. That's a mighty small sample, but...

--He's a former 2nd round pick, and is is only 25.

--He was stunningly good as a SP his first 3 minor league seasons, ERA's of 1.95, 3.64, and 3.29, the latter in AAA.

--Always struck out 3 times as many as he walked. Also, only allowed 0.5 homers per 9 frames.

I won't argue he struggled in the majors, but pitching mostly middle relief after starting your entire career, and debuting in the bigs 3 years after being drafted is not really being set up for success either.

He is not a hard thrower, and looks like mostly a fastball/change up pitcher, so long term, his future is probably out of the bullpen, maybe with some spot starter usage.

If nothing else, he might be a good guy to claim and then send right back through waivers to let him work himself back into prospect status in AAA.

(6/18/2017 01:17:00 PM) - Al

If you do not understand what a small sample is, this is a nice example.

One would expect a near .500 record on any given day over the year. If you add these 2 together, it's almost exactly .500. But the smaller the sample, the more likely it is to be "off."

If you do not understand this, you are likely to wear Reynold's Wrap products on your noggin and embarrass yourself often on matters of common sense. For instance, you are likely to come to the conclusion that many people who voted for a black man twice and then voted for a white man did so because they are "racist."

I've been warning you about this for the past 15 years. When you start to excuse bad behavior, the bad behavior will continue...and get worse.

I see lots of folks are "excusing" the vandalism and lawlessness in the Twin Cities area too. None of those criminals would give a damn if a cop got shot. In fact, many would react with great joy. I do not expect law enforcement, or anyone else for that matter, to wait around while a guy either grabs his gun (police officer's version) or reaches his hand out of sight (witness version). Many would say the cop should have stood there and waited to get shot because "that's unlikely to happen."

Many are out of touch buffoons. I know I'm right, because she who is always wrong disagrees.

I can't believe how many of my FB friends went to the Brewers' game yesterday, and every one because of the Faith Day festivities, including the Mercy Me concert. I was a little surprised to see empty seats in the 4th level corners, though a crowd of 34K is respectable.

Minor league teams have been known to have several Faith Nights a season, especially in the south, as they often get a capacity crowd, or very close to it. I would assume this is the start of a tradition at Miller Park.

For those who think the Brewers will remain in contention, a list of the top trade possibilities...perhaps even a better "list" is the "others" separated by team at the bottom.

There are 2-3 dozen relievers of various quality. By far the most tempting name to me would be Josh Harrison of the Pirates...a solid option at 2B/3B/LF/RF...and I'm sure he could play SS and CF if needed, though he would likely be the best option for hardly anyone.

Also, funny to see Jeffress and Lucroy both mentioned, even if not on the real list.

The presser acted like Torres had really struggled of reality, he had held the opponents scoreless in 4 of the last 5...and the one was the 11-1 loss in which I doubt Torres did much more than fling strikes in, hoping for a short outing.

Even though Chase went 7, the bullpen still had to get 12 outs. They have not had the good fortune of quick games, to say the least. They are tied for 2nd in extra inning games, with 10 already. A couple teams have only had 1 or 2.

The Bucks have officially named Jon Horst their general manager. Horst’s promotion from director of basketball operations is surprising, given that the reported finalists for the position were Bucks assistant GM Justin Zanik, Nuggets assistant GM Arturas Karnisovas, and former Hawks GM Wes Wilcox. A “contentious ownership disagreement” reportedly led to Horst’s ascension.--Hoops Rumors

Apparently, the braintrust was split on who to add on to the braintrust. Horst is a compromise pick, but one has to wonder if Jason Kidd is either making or approving many of the moves, and the GM is more of a paperwork/spokesman position.

That boy's gonna be a cheap date someday.

By the way, a prediction...LC just introduced a new $6 large pizza, which they call the EMB, the "extra most bestest," which has extra cheese and extra pepperoni than their standard $5 large. Thornburg to miss season with surgery.

Tyler and Will Smith have been injured, while Jeffress has had off field issues and struggled on the diamond. Lesson? Sell high on relievers, as all but the very best are hit and miss.

In a roundabout way, this is why I am so pro position player in the June draft. Far less injury risk, far more consistent. Let the other clubs take the risks and then make trades once they get through the minefield that is developing arms.

Jon Heyman reports the Rangers seriously considered dumping Jeremy Jeffress before they DFA'd Sam Dyson.

Jeffress pitched nicely for a week or two, going 7.2 frames and only allowing one run, until blowing up last night, giving up 2 homers and 4 runs in a single inning. His velocity is down 1.1 mph from last season (likely about 2.5 mph, as the guns seem faster this year) and his fly balls are up, K's and grounders down.

He could well be a buy low candidate as time goes on. Given his arrest last season and subsequent treatment, the Rangers are probably questioning his motivation, if nothing else.

After insisting for a season plus Matt Garza had trade value, it turns out he is pitching better and might be worth nearly as much as the top arms on this list...especially when one considers he has a team option for $5M next season.

No Counsell presser after the game on FSW? Nothing on Twitter either? Did he not have one because it's after deadline? Does "deadline" still exist since they don't really have any newspapers yet?

I doubt he would have talked about the bullpen workload and availability anyway, but it's why I watched. I would not be surprised at all if Knebel, Torres, and Barnes are given the day off. All are on pace for 80+ games, and that has to come down at some point. The team has one day off before the all star break on June 10th. Scheduling days off may be needed to not only keep them healthy, but to simply see who else they have. CC has said often, "We'll worry about tomorrow tomorrow." I don't think he ever expected to win so many and be in so many games.

Stearns says taking HS players with strong college commitments in rounds 11-19 was their strategy, thinks there will be money left over to "sign some."

7th-8th round money is about $200-250K. The first $100K doesn't count. They might be able to afford 5 or 6 of them if they can save $1M elsewhere.

6/14/2017 06:37:00 PM

(6/14/2017 05:34:00 PM) - Al

When Giffords was shot, it was treated as an attack on liberals.

Today, an attack on the GOP by a Sanders' supporter is being treated as "yet another mass shooting." Nothing to do with hateful talk, of course.

It's a bit more subtle than usual, but obviously, still an attempt to not report the news, but frame it.

ADDED: Tragedy handbook...blame the right or if the shooter is not a conservative, insist we must not bring politics into this.

If the shooter had been a dedicated Rush Limbaugh fan, there would be talk today of banning "hateful talk radio," which would, of course, translate to conservative radio. But, since he was a socialist who hated Republicans, it's a shrug of the shoulders and "let's ban guns."

Garza back, Feliz DFA'd. Disappointing because everything I said about Peralta yesterday is also true of Feliz. He could easily rebound and have a better second half than Barnes or Knebel...that's how relievers work.

That said, he was only signed for 2017, so the loss is minimal, only $500K for a replacement, and what you would acquire in trade. Still might get something, as the velocity is there. Sam Dyson had several suitors, they said.

Brewers have chosen 9 HS players to start the 3rd day of the draft. Not sure if that's a planned pattern or just best player available. All are also at athletic positions (P/CF/SS) as well.

EDIT: Very likely a strategy, as 9 straight HS's would only happen less than 1/4 of 1% of the time if done randomly.

ADDED: They took a sophomore eligible college player with their 10th pick.  They must have a plan to be able to afford them. Their "pool" is $10.45M, and then can give any player drafted in round 11-40 $100K without it counting against the pool (so if they sign a pick for $125K, only $25K counts toward their "pool" total.

It's a mystery why an angry socialist would get the idea to commit violence against conservatives

A few facts.

--If not for good guys with guns, we may have lost up to 50 GOP politicians this morning.

--The only reason the capitol police were there is one of the "players" has a title, the majority whip. If not, the shooter would have had several more minutes to shoot and kill.

--The shooter is from IL, the state with the strictest gun control in the nation. He was a scumbag and I'm glad he's dead. Thank goodness he did not take any innocents with him.

--Newt Gingrich just said he regularly talks to college students who say they feel threatened if they speak up and voice their support for Trump and the Republican party. It's OK to joke about assassinating Trump, but any talk like that was unacceptable for Obama. Why? Shut up.

--Many are suggesting we buy tickets for the baseball game, even if we live elsewhere and cannot go. The proceeds go to charity.

--You can say what you want, but I don't think a fake investigation into a conspiracy theory to try and explain away why a despised candidate has done anything but led to this. They should put away their tin foil hats and get to work.

--Thank goodness this loser was such a terrible shot. He was shooting for 3-5 minutes, per eyewitnesses. If he was a trained military sniper, every person on the field would be dead. It would look like a patch of Normandy.

President Trump giving Defense Secretary Mattis authority to set number of troops in Afghanistan. Pentagon announcement expected shortly.--Gillian Turner

If Obama had done this instead of firing Mattis and giving them a fraction of the troops that were needed, Afghanistan would have never been lost after W won it. (6/13/2017 06:31:00 PM) - Al

Woodruff DL'd, Espino brought up.

We'll have to see if Espino or Suter goes down tomorrow. If Espino pitches in the second game, it may well be him. Since Suter pitched so well before tiring, he may be kept if both can't pitch for a day or two.

Garza due back soon also. Braun expected to go on rehab in a few days, and you know that will probably only last a day or two.

As Adam and I tweet back and forth about Peralta, thoughts:

1. He was sent down last year and used his final option.

2. At the time, I'm sure it was assumed they would just nontender him.

3. However, he righted the ship after being called up, and was offered arby.

4. One would think he has little to no chance of being offered arby again, so his time with the Crew would end after this current campaign.

5. Is it worth trying to salvage something and hoping he returns to form? Given that Sam Dyson was claimed by multiple teams, MLB clubs have a tendency to think they can "fix" any pitcher, especially the ones that throw 96-98 with movement.

It may well come down to if MIL thinks they are actual contenders, or if they feel they have little chance of matching the Cubs over 162 (or a wildcard, of which they are 6 games out at the moment). SD is carrying 3 Rule 5 picks and appears oblivious of the fact 2 of the 3 are embarrassing themselves, including the young P they nabbed from the Brewers, Miguel Diaz, who has worked his ERA DOWN to 7ish. They have punted 2017 and are using it for the future.

(6/13/2017 12:27:00 PM) - Al

Went to Brewers' site and the Crew was on the clock. I rock.

They take KJ Harrison, catcher from Oregon State. I have said I would always take a catcher in the first 5 rounds, just due to position scarcity. He has also played 1B/3B and is known as a slugger, so there will be questions about his ability to stay at catcher.

6/13/2017 12:27:00 PM

(6/13/2017 12:10:00 PM) - Al

After today's twin bill, I think Suter might be in his way up and will probably replace a position player. Unless he was injured, there is no reason for him to start SUN and then be pulled after 30 pitches.

Or, Woodruff could stick around, especially if he pitches well. A 4.12 ERA does not seem very impressive, but pitching half his games at altitude, becomes far more so.

Brewers pick Caden Lemons, a HS RHP  at #46.

I am not a fan of taking HS pitchers in the first 5 rounds due to injury risk, but that doesn't mean some of them don't make it.

That is it for tonight.

6/12/2017 09:52:00 PM

(6/12/2017 09:18:00 PM) - Al

Brewers pick Tristen Lutz, HS OF at #34.

Big arm, big RH power hitter, 6-3, 210, so he's 18 and as big as Lewis Brinson. He's going to be a large man, probably settle in at 6-4, 225-230. Committed to Texas, but I'm sure the Crew knows he's signable.

I know I saw a mock in which Lutz was taken in the 15-20 range. One more pick tonight at #46.

6/12/2017 09:18:00 PM

(6/12/2017 09:16:00 PM) - Al

The clock just asked that they please step off.

(6/12/2017 08:34:00 PM) - Al

I'm not nearly a big enough nerd to watch the draft pick by pick, but I just looked at the picks and the top rated I suspected, the Crew will almost certainly get a player rated by many in the top 15 at #34...well, if they choose to take one, as sometimes players go "early" if they will sign for less or whatever.

6/12/2017 08:34:00 PM

(6/12/2017 07:10:00 PM) - Al

Brewers take Kestin Hiura in the 1st round.

Love the pick, as he was considered the best hitter in the draft, and definitely the best college hitter. He has an arm issue that may require surgery, but time will tell. May end up at 1B/2B/LF because of this.

As a guy who prefers position players to pitchers and would always err toward taking the best hitter available (in a hat tip to the Weeks/Braun/Fielder days, not to mention the Cubs current run of Bryant/Schwarber/Happ), this is a pick I would have made.

Rewriting of history is not just limited to politics, I guess.

Just saw a message board say last year, most mock drafts had the Crew going with Delvan Perez. I thought that was strange, because I recalled most having them ending up with Corey Ray, who they did choose. So, I went back to check...the 10 I looked at, 7 had Ray, the other 3 were mixed.

If memory serves, Perez was a guy mentioned as a possible "below slot" pick, as he was thought to be a late 1st round choice, and would sign for late 1st round money.

6/12/2017 02:54:00 PM

(6/12/2017 02:00:00 PM) - Al

Sickels completely changes his "final" mock draft, now has the Crew taking another HS OF.

Jeren Kendall, who I longed for to be their 1st pick a month or so ago, drops clear to #23. The Brewers' pick at #34 might well have been forecast in the top half of the 1st round a while back, as about a half dozen prospects have nosedived in the past week.

Tear down this wall!

Of course, if Obama would have been there, the phrase would have been adjusted to say, "If you want to tear the down, you can tear down the wall. And let me make perfectly clear, I apologize for all of our past sins, which are many, because we used to be a terrible, horrible place. Saving the world while asking for nothing in return but a place to bury our fallen. Again, I'm sorry. Maybe a pallet of cash would make you hate us less?"

And you think I'm kidding.

6/12/2017 01:32:00 PM

(6/12/2017 12:10:00 PM) - Al

When we had our roof done, they backed up an old dump truck they used for trash. It leaked hydraulic fluid all over our driveway, as while they put a board under it, they could not get it down fast enough, or maybe it rolled down the board, I don't know. I mentioned it to the guy finishing up, cutting and installing our gutters, and he tried to put Dawn on it and brush it in a bit, said it would likely fade. It did, but was still very visible.

Stubbornness is both a positive and a negative. I googled how to get rid of fresh oil stains on concrete and found dozens of home remedies, and a couple products that cost $30-50, which even if they worked, I would only use once (barring our vehicles leaking over time).

Some suggestions would have cost as much as the specialty cleaner. However, I am proud to say, after yesterday's rain, I cannot even tell where the stains were. The method, which involves no scrubbing at all, takes less than a minute, and costs about $1 per treatment:

Sprinkle a box of baking soda over the stain.

Pour a bottle of hydrogen peroxide over the baking soda.

Let sit a day or two. The soda kind of holds the peroxide in place.

Wait for the rain to rinse it away. I guess if you were impatient, you could use a hose or a bucket.

You could even use your "old" baking soda from your fridge or freezer, which would lower your cost to 50 cents, you frugal fella that doesn't realize everyone laughs at you because you're so damb cheap.

Note: I am not a chemist. I am also not responsible for you doing this wrong and bleaching your wife's stupid stone that says "Welcome, a stranger is just a friend we haven't met" or something equally as insane.

Let's be blunt here, it's time for the left to take off the tin foil hats, admit Mueller's time and the money wasted is not needed, and get on with the task of governing the greatest country the planet has ever known.

How many more days do they need like last THU? I saw one friend, a loyal Dem his entire life, say the Dems was "probably no more relevant than a 3rd party" on Facebook in all but the far west and northeast. He said he had been called by the state party for a contribution and he said he had no reason to do so, citing their failure to even field a candidate for state supreme court. The caller told him they "were not going to throw money at a race they had no chance to win." In WI, he said this was a completely unacceptable answer.

I assume the Crew will announce who is coming up for the doubleheader tomorrow at some point today. They could do any number of things after the off day today, such as have two "regular" SP's start, but that would minimize the 26th man benefit.

Espino would be on his normal day to start, but Brent Suter only went 30 pitches in his start yesterday...while he may be able to go an inning or two tomorrow, it seems odd he'd start...though they might bring him up to use in relief, or just plan to have him go once through the order and then switch to Peralta or someone else.

There are so many things that are wrong with this article, it would be difficult to go over them all.

1. As someone who grew up in a house without AC, it's difficult to believe I survived. Not only that, but we were so damn stupid, we didn't even wake up early, stay up later, nap midday, or sleep on the porch.

2. The author saying many or most folks would just move out of the southern USA without AC must have made older southerners laugh at loud. According to this, Lewis and Clark must have never traveled during the day, or death would have followed within seconds.

Stupidity like this always makes me think of the fact for decades, "hard liquor" products did not advertise* on television (and, tobacco still can't). Why you ask? Because it was well known that the minute they began, we would pretty much all become raging alcoholics, carrying brown paper bags with us wherever we went, and slyly drinking out of them whenever we thought no one was looking**.

Amazingly, that did not happen, much to the chagrin of anti alcohol groups.

*The industry actually agreed to a "self ban" of radio/TV ads for political reasons, just a couple years after Prohibition ended.

**Coincidentally, this is how I most often eat pie.

Have to see how many moves are made tomorrow (or before the first game TUE). The bullpen, at least the back half of it, is in rough shape (in retail, we would have used the term, "has room for improvement," because we were positive to a fault), and while Torres has suffered some bad luck in addition to allowing HR's, Feliz was not able to continue his streak of solid outings (which granted, was at one). Peralta and Scahill have been inconsistent, alternating between pretty good and not.

The problem with relievers is simple...they're very inconsistent. A week ago, Hughes would have been in the above paragraph, and suddenly, he's been excellent his last few appearances, and is now in the set up group with Drake, trying to get the ball to Barnes and Knebel. We do not know if Hader is being considered for a long term spot or not, so he's tough to wotk into this. As we have discussed more than once, most of the 'pen lacks options, so they cannot be sent down, without making a final decision on them.

--Despite pitching to solid stats, Scahill is likely the "bubble" guy out there, due to his low ceiling. He's got guys out, but the fact he's walked far more than he has K'd indicate he's done it with luck.

--Torres and Feliz will be used in low leverage spots for now, hoping they regain their previous consistent ability to retire major league hitters. I assume Peralta will too, though Wily has value due to his velocity, "stuff," and ability to start games and go 5-6 frames at times.

Of course, if this team was in a different place in the success cycle, we might well see different actions. As Counsell said, they're pretty limited.

About 75-80% of the mock MLB drafts say the Crew will take toolsy HS OF Jo Adell with the 9th pick in the 1st round tomorrow.

However, those few sites that guess someone else have Adell falling down A LOT...some to 15th, many to the late 1st (26th+), and a few even have him not listed in the 1st round.

Sure would be something if they did not take him 9th and he fell to their competitive balance pick at 34th.

Brinson gets the start versus the LHP. Surprised to see Thames playing 1B instead of Aguilar, especially how beat up Eric appeared last night after he misjudged that fly ball. I would have guessed CC would give him today off in order to give him 48 hours of rest.

Shaw and Garza will likely both be back soon, and depending on how they feel about keeping Hader up. As I mentioned with Justin last evening, if Brinson or Phillips would get off to a good start, it would be tough to send them back down.

Brinson up, Villar to DL.

Second time this season a player has been brought up to replace an injured position player that plays an entirely different spot. The versatility of the roster (Perez/Franklin/Sogard/Thames) allows this to happen.

Stearns has made being able to play multiple positions a priority, and we've seen the benefits. If they needed an infielder to replace Villar, we would have seen Yadi Rivera, who while a heckuva defensive player, swings and misses at the water when he falls out of a boat. This is something we'll see more and more, as pitchers now take up 12-13 spots on most rosters, while a few seasons ago, took up 10-11.

Some fight how the game has changed, others adjust.

With the versatility of Franklin (and others), you could see an infielder or an outfielder replace Villar if he has to be DL'd. You would certainly think he'll miss a few days, and with the 10 day DL and only 4 position players on the bench, I would guess they'll be aggressive (of course, if he is only expected to miss a day or two, they could always return Hader to AAA and go from there).

Yadi Rivera, Lewis Brinson, Ryan Cordell, and Mike Reed would be the 40 man position player options (assuming they did not want to add Andrew Susac, a catcher). Cordell has played 1B/3B, but is almost solely an OF (he has played all 3 spots, and a lot at each). Brinson is an OF (almost solely a CF), as is Reed (all 3, mostly in RF); while Rivera has played 2B/SS/3B and some OF in winterball and I believe spring training.

It's funny, as Franklin has played mostly OF in MIL, but was a 2B/SS until recently.

Brewers also swap Shaw for Phillips again, as this time Travis is placed on family medical emergency list, something I cannot say I have heard of in the past. Not sure, but this is probably related to his wife having a baby. Hopefully, both will soon recover and he will be back.

EDIT: I have never used that term on Ramblings before, per my archive search, so I would guess it was in the CBA just passed. Braun was once placed on the "bereavement list" when there was a medical emergency in his family, so maybe they just decided to call it what it was.

Just realized all 4 players Doug acquired in the Gomez/Fiers trade have now made the majors. Stearns has focused on mostly lower level players, which should pay off, but will rarely lead to all of them making the bigs, as more will be injured, fail to develop, have problems with drugs/alcohol/mental issues, and so on.

From the comments on Instapundit:

My family has insisted this is just a sour grapes, sore loser, finger pointing charade by the liberal media. I said of course it's not. Today I was proven wrong. Comey is so full of himself, he admitted leaking FBI docs to a friend, and was proud of it. Many in the media simply lied and made up stories. I have never been so embarrassed by my party and their leaders. Schumer, Pelosi, Sanders, every really old one of them, should step down from leadership and simply say it is time for the younger generation to step up. Most of all, they should figure out what they want to accomplish. Just being anti-Trump is a losing proposition. They look like idiots when they're anti-Comey until he was fired, and then are suddenly pro-Comey, and tonight, are anti-Comey again. It's a total embarrassment.
