Al's Ramblings

(6/30/2017 11:57:00 PM) - Al

Bucks have been mentioned on the rumor mill as being interested in Kyle Korver and Anthony Tolliver.

Looks like they want veteran 3 and D types to round out the roster.

Two notes from AAA land.

1. Jungmann only pitched 3 innings and 37 pitches in his start tonight, so he is at least in the discussion to be brought up to start MON versus BAL.

2. Cravy pitched tonight, so he either had no decision to make or quickly decided to stay with MIL. Of course, when 29 other teams decline to pick you up for a 40 man spot, it's probably time to realize you're just another guy.

No one likes to admit it, but with a strikeout pitcher like Knebel on the mound, that was a good send by the Marlins' 3B coach. Took two perfect throws and a perfect tag, and it was still 50/50.

I have not done the legwork on this, but it seems like all of Knebel's save situations are of the 1 run lead variety. It seems like he never has a 6-4 or 8-5 cushion to work with. Maybe this will all balance out in the second half.

6/30/2017 11:38:00 PM

(6/30/2017 11:33:00 PM) - Al

Unofficial reports indicate Tony Snell has agreed to terms with the Bucks, in the 4y/$44M range. This will probably not be signed for a while since teams can go over the cap to sign their own FA's.

Wow, liberals are really hating life now that the new rules are applying to them too. Good. Their pain sustains me.--Kurt Schlicter

I've been living on 900-1200 calories a day, 10 carbs or less, and liberal tears. Most days it sucks, but seeing lefties miserable makes it mildly worthwhile.

You have a good weekend my friends, and for many of us, a long weekend. Enjoy the 4th of July, the birthday of the greatest nation to ever exist.

We spoke to Mark A. about Brewers reaching July in first. Said there's no pressure from ownership on Stearns to divert from big-picture plan.--Adam, MLB.com

We've talked about this here a couple times. It won't cost a top prospect to pick up a reliever or bench bat. They are not going to swing a Sabathia type trade, but they shouldn't.

Crew continues to fiddle with that final roster  spot...Lopez down, Scahill back on the 25 and the 40, while Cravy has been outrighted off the 40.

I am about 90% sure Cravy was taken off the 40 before, so he can become a FA if he wishes. As grumpy as he was, wrongfully so, but still, at the end of March when he was optioned, I feel he may well do so.

I liked him as a cheap middle relief guy, but as we have pointed out before, the Brewers simply have too many quality players on the 40 man with others in the system as well. Simply put, it's something deep farm systems have to deal with.

By the way, loves the way they have been using that final spot and basically playing with a 26 man roster. I wish they'd use that final spot for a position player, but that's a minor quibble.

I just wanted to mention that Governor Walker's approval rating was the highest it has been in almost 3 years in the past Marquette poll...48%.

The fact he's at 48 and has won 3 elections with relative ease must be rather depressing to those who see Trump at 41 as a victory.

These are troubled, violent times, especially if you are of conservative beliefs. As the scouts say, 'be prepared."

And don't be ashamed to do so.

6/30/2017 11:00:00 AM

(6/30/2017 10:00:00 AM) - Al

Two things here...one, has anyone ever pondered the fact that tea partiers, a group of mostly Republican, but also a few fiscal conservative independents and Dems, that were vilified as evil by the old media when they were, in fact, just everyday Americans who cleaned up after others and left their own gathering places cleaner than when they arrived MAYBE were also Trump voters...you know mostly Republican, but also a few fiscal conservative independents and Dems, that were vilified as evil by the old media when they were, in fact, just everyday Americans?

Two, Ann's post speaks of the tweets...it questions many of the assumptions. I read them and I have yet to see a single derogatory mention of Mika's appearance. It says she was bleeding after a facelift...so? That's a hygiene issue after a medical procedure, not a comment on her looks. As others have said, Trump is a mighty young looking 70something married to a gorgeous former model, he likely knows exactly what facelift scars and aftermath look like.

--She was bleeding after a facelift.

--She's a mighty ugly broad.

Two statements, one on her looks, one factual, at least, Trump's side of the facts. Again, as pointed out, others are making an assumption, and those who choose to dislike Trump overreact to the assumption, not what he said.

As long as I'm discussing this, I need to cut and paste a few of Ann's comments. They are hilarious, because here we are, months into the Trump presidency, and they still can't figure out he plays them like a fiddle.

--Tsk tsk. When are you going to learn? Do we really have to use the cliche from Shakespeare again? You must think Trump is the luckiest idiot in the world? But there is a method to his madness (see?), he did this for a reason.

If you would stop being so intellectually lazy, you might wonder what is he really on about. But with that realization would also come fear.

Ah to be comfortably stupid.

--Trump:

1) Correctly understands the media is his enemy.
2) Recognizes Joe and Mika as examples of press belligerence toward him.
3) Sees an opportunity to make the media the story.
4) Feels he has nothing to lose fighting back against an unpopular media.
5) Is not afraid to challenge the Washington establishment.
6) Knows a big chunk of the media will direct their attention to Mika and her facelift/victim-hood.
7) Rightly concludes that most of America will shrug off his tweets

--It's the Democrats/media that's classless and viscous.

Trump didn't make the rules, he's just playing by them.

What makes it so strange is that we're not used to seeing Republicans fight back.

-- The media has no idea how cleverly he strings them along. They always fall for Trump's diversions and always resort to the only real weapon they have: public shaming. By refusing to be shamed, Trump wins every time. They have nothing to use against him.

-- Let your enemies know that if you kick this dog, it will bite back. People learn to stop kicking that dog.

They are still underestimating him. He's so stupid, he was a huge underdog, he had no chance. Yet even after the fact, we see his campaign strategy was brilliant. His appeal was to the same citizenry Obama and Hillary both do/did not even pretend not to despise.

They, and even some of the commenters, call them hillbillies and rednecks, and make fun of their trade school educations, patriotism, and the fact they're so stupid they do not even live on a coast. That went to a public school, and worked part time if they decided to go to school beyond 12th grade.

As Jeff Foxworthy described them a decade or more ago, these are the same folks that drive trucks, work for the fire and police departments, that join the military, that fill churches on Sundays, and the ones you call at 3AM when your furnace breaks down, your pipes are leaking, or you need to get to the hospital but your driveway has a foot of snow on it.

They hunt, fish, and camp. They drink beer instead of wine. Sushi = bait. They grill burgers and steaks and not only can't say or spell foie gras, they have no interest in eating it.

It's not President Trump's fault his vision of the USA matches theirs better than the left's. It's not just his either; it's the House, the Senate, and those 1000 seats since Obama moved in, making fun of those "bitter clingers" and "deplorables" and vowing to put miners out of work, because their product is far cheaper than the much cooler solar and wind, and those don't get your hands dirty...though they don't work when it's cloudy or calm, but, those hicks are too stupid to realize that!

Hopefully, they will continue to tease and mock with an air of superiority. 2018 should be a Dem turning point, and historically, it has been. The more time they take telling each other how dumb we are, the less they have to figure out what the hell has happened.

So in closing...keep concentrating on the tweets, the ghosts in Russia, Bigfoot, how dumb we are, and how we can someday, with great effort, be as polite, civil, and awesome as you are.

They can rewrite history all they want. When you put it all together, Obama's Iraq and Afghanistan missteps make Carter's ineptness look like he used skim milk instead of 1%.

As I have said often, the really sad thing is, we won the war, at a great cost of life and money; and Obama just gave it back because of his shortsighted, selfish lack of leadership...he knew better you know. Those military experts, I mean, seriously...many of them went to public colleges. A few even drive pick up trucks.

(6/30/2017 08:00:00 AM) - Al

We'll never know if it's true or not, but given the results of Trump's tough talk has had in lowering the illegals wandering across the border, it is very possible.

I worked for a couple managers who strongly believed their aggressive, almost mean outlook scared many into working/trying harder. It never worked on me, but I was high enough up the totem pole to know I was immune to such silliness...I could walk out and have a similar job in days when I was in the Twin Cities. I would say, however, if you are a terrorist regime, you are probably not used to any response exact fear.

Terrorists are by definition cowards, so the respect and mindnumbing angst the previous administration gave them...shipping pallets of cash and making deals in which the USA gained nothing, was especially bothersome. Treat them like the creepy thugs they are, and the response will probably be exactly what Mattis claimed...extreme hesitance. Nothing bothers them more than the panic and dread of possible painful death.

(6/30/2017 07:53:00 AM) - Al

Lost in the muck last night...Counsell saying they called up Lopez because "he was fresh and able to pitch." Said others were not available, while Lopez could go a couple innings today (yesterday), which is exactly what ended up happening. Mike Blazek had just pitched 7 innings earlier in the day WED.

Also, CC said they may just go start to start with what they have, rather than adding a SP and adding him to the rotation. Jungmann and Blazek are hoping that does not occur.

6/30/2017 07:53:00 AM

(6/30/2017 07:00:00 AM) - Al

Another day, another crushing video of CNN not even pretending to be a news organization.

I haven't treated as one in a couple decades. Turns out, I was just ahead of the curve.

And this is especially interesting right now, when everyone purports to be shocked that Donald Trump tweeted that Mika Brzezinski was "bleeding badly from a face-lift": Carr says that Kellyanne Conway "looks like she got hit with a shovel."--Ann Althouse

Trump's will be called offensive. Carr's will be thought of as descriptive. Because, as we all know, conservative women can be ripped apart by the old media, and no one gives a damn.

Because shut up.

(6/30/2017 06:30:00 AM) - Al

Well to be fair, older women tend to be grumpy and negative about everything.

Small victories.

(6/29/2017 09:11:00 PM) - Al

Lopez allows a ground ball hit and then two line drive singles to load the bases, before allowing a shot to Villar, who begins a 4-6-3 DP, followed by a fly out. Escapes with only a run across. Missing on his change up by several feet.

Tough not to think he's rather weak on the mental side of the game, or else has major repeating his delivery issues as Jungmann did last season.

EDIT: A walk and a line drive double, and a 400 foot foul ball leads to no harm. Jorge does not look sharp, but manages 2 IP, 1 R. Given the situation, it was plenty passable.

Surprised Braun is still in there, 8th inning of a 11-2 game.

I was expecting him out in the 6th.

I might assume they want to give Thames and Broxton the whole game off for rest, but that leaves Sogard and Vogt...Vogt has played OF in his past, as has Eric.

Compare that the famous Obama quote:

If somebody wants to build a coal-fired power plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them. Under my plan … electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.

Punishing the rubes with higher costs for energy...very regressive by the way...was not a side effect...it was the plan itself. Why did we have such extended tiny growth, previously unseen since WW2? All part of the plan.

"Spread the wealth" was just a nice way of saying "redistribute the cash." Marx would be proud, but no capitalist would.

Jason Terry says he wants to return, and the Bucks say they'd love to have him.

Hopefully, that will be quick and easy, though they may have to wait due to cap issues (teams can go over resigning their own players). Mike Dunleavy also was given his freedom today, love to see him back. Those vets that have probably lost half a step but are still plenty competent playing 10-15 minutes a game are nice pieces for teams that plan on contending.

The great thing about Terry is, he doesn't care if he plays 20 minutes or not at all. For guys who have had success and made a fortune, that's a rare quality.

6/29/2017 07:30:00 PM

(6/29/2017 06:48:00 PM) - Al

I can't find the link, but I think it was Glenn that mentioned how it is an overblown issue about Trump tweeting...his supporters love it, while the old media is shocked...shocked I tell ya, that a president they treat with unabashed hatred dares to give it right back to them.

You'll note how often myself and many others have been saying this was needed for a decade. Punch back twice as hard has been Instapundit's mantra, while I prefer the "fight like a girl" motto because everyone knows exactly what I mean...pull hair, fingers in the eyes...whatever it takes. Women are not natural, trained pugilists, so they look to inflict pain however they can, fast and furious.

Republicans have been trained to be "better than that"...they are too civil for a civil war, as the saying goes, that liberals know they can fight dirty, throw lies against the wall, and good, honorable men like W will read a book, go to bed, and rise to fight the quiet fight with honor the next day.

I distinctly noted the fact Sarah Huckabee Sanders called Russia "a hoax" a couple days ago and nobody even bothered arguing with her.

Given this was just made up by Hillary's people the day after the election, it's had quite a lifeline. Meanwhile, Obama's folks spying on Americans and trying to subdue an investigation into Rice and Bill's tarmac meeting has been pushed aside...but not forgotten. I forget who said it, but someone mentioned you know this thing has legs because Rice has already pulled out the race card...if it was nothing, she would not have bothered.

6/29/2017 05:41:00 PM

(6/29/2017 05:10:00 PM) - Al

As Adam surmised, Jorge Lopez summoned from AA Biloxi, as he will pitch out of the bullpen while the Crew decides who will get Anderson's next start.

3 options, Espino, Hader, and Suter; are already with the big league club. Jungmann is the only 40 man roster arm stretched out to start, while Blazek has also pitched nicely at altitude, but would have to be added to the 40 (though a spot is available).

Cravy just returned from the DL and has only one inning in since missing a couple weeks. The only other two options on the 40 are Adrian Houser, who will miss the entire season after TJ surgery, and Taylor Williams, who is starting at AA Biloxi, but only going an inning or two per outing, as he is also rehabbing from arm surgeries. Wei Chung Wang is still pitching brilliantly out of the bullpen at AAA, though some of it appears to be good fortune...the other day, he gave up 6 hits in an inning plus the other day and somehow only allowed a single run.

(6/29/2017 11:00:00 AM) - Al

You can really say this about the gas tax too. The Dems seem to forget most miles are driven by working folks to and from their employment. No tax is more regressive, and they keep insisting on raising it, because they continue to spend too much money on fancy new roads and bridges.

The answer is simple. You want to spend more on roads? Great. Find out where you can cut the budget elsewhere, and then get back to me. Until then, you're just a fool who wants to take more money from the rubes who earned it.

6/29/2017 11:00:00 AM

(6/29/2017 09:30:00 AM) - Al

Sssshhhh. Keep this under your hat. We don't want anyone to know what a failure Obamacare is.

We're spending all this time worrying about 9M of our 350M citizens, most of which would save money with free market coverage. It is so sad how no one has the guts to simply stop wasting money on 2.5% of the public and explain the math.

Only in DC would raising spending by less be referred to as a "cut." Since the old media are stooges that make stuff up, the president points it out.

They wanna see cuts, they should elect me king. I'd cut everything 10% across the board my first couple years, and then I'd really get serious. The liberal tears that would follow would be my greatest triumph.

6/29/2017 03:00:00 AM

(6/29/2017 01:41:00 AM) - Al

Adam feels Jorge Lopez will get the call to ensure the bullpen does not get overworked. Lopez is at AA in part because of his troubles with his breaking ball at altitude.

Unlike Hader, who is working out of the bullpen to conserve innings, Lopez's move to relief is expected to stick, as he has struggled with length and his secondary offerings.

Blazek has continued to pitch nicely in AAA, a 3 ERA in Colorado Springs is probably a 3 ERA in the majors, but he will have to be put on the 40 man, and remember, he can't be sent down either.

I was surprised he made it through waivers once, and I bet there are a couple teams that thought about it kicking themselves ever since.

Depending on how long Espino goes tonight and the team's long term plan for him, the Crew might DL Anderson and send Espino down after the game, and replenish with an arm and a position player.

6/28/2017 07:24:00 PM

(6/28/2017 06:47:00 PM) - Al

He is probably right, though Serena's power makes me think she might be the exception and be able to compete and be competitive (though that might still be #150-200), rarely winning a singles match. However, no other woman would be able to do much more than lose 6-0, 6-1 most days.

Years ago, Chris Evert was asked about this, and she just laughed. She said her brother, who was a teaching pro and not even ranked on the men's side, used to beat her all the time when she was ranked #1 and #2 in the world.

Notice the government didn't do anything...they'll only help those that don't bother working.

Think how many people could be helped if they quit trying to "spread the wealth" and allowed those that earn it to keep more of their money. Why do you think they eliminated the tax credit for charitable contributions?

They want the only assistance to come from DC. Buying votes, one sad dependent, lost cause at a time.

I assume this is one of those "make a trade and watch the free agents follow" type of deals, but the Clippers just rebuilt themselves in one swoop, and HOU got a short window with a 32 year old who has missed about 25% of the games his team has played the past 6 years.

I'm a big fan of Beverley, and considering he's younger, cheaper, and healthier, consider Paul a slight upgrade. Add in Williams, Dekker, and a 1st round pick, wow.

(6/28/2017 09:00:00 AM) - Al

Serious question for Rambling readers, as we are quite curious.

Our TV and cable box are plugged into an outlet in our living room upstairs. Several times, when one of us has walked out of the upstairs bathroom, when we reach over and shut off the light (and often, the exhaust fan too), the TV "pauses" for a half second or second. The audio cuts out, and the screen goes gray also...and then it returns. I have never noticed a "pause" like this when replaying something taped on the DVR. so I assume it's a TV thing.

Since it has happened a few times, we have began to try and "make it happen" but have never had success. We can flip off the bathroom light until we develop a callous, and it never affects the TV. The light switch does have a GFCI (that annoying thing that safeguards against you dying from dropping a hair dryer into a sink with water) on it, but we've tested that and no connection. The Rambling son took a look and it does not seem like the bathroom and the living room share a circuit breaker, not that you would expect them to, nor has either ever "popped" to our knowledge in 15 years here.

Thoughts? Ideas? Is something going to explode?

And please save the Bigfoot, ghostly hauntings, tinfoil hat government conspiracy stuff. Shut off CNN and go get help.

I stopped at the neighborhood "I only need a couple things" grocery store today because I knew I was low on bagged lettuce (why yes, yes I am hellishly cool). I knew the Rambling son, who does not yet share the low metabolism curse, had been sans ice cream for a while, and sure enough, it was on sale for 2 for $4. Me being a rube sheep in flyover country, I bought 2, even though I assume one would have rung up as $2. The selection was pretty picked over, so I just grabbed a couple of the "dark chocolate" flavor as his tastes are as simple as my own.

He opened one tonight, so I tried a bite, as did the Rambling wife. Oh my. Rich ice cream with rich dark cocoa taste, just like a bag of Dove chocolates or those spendy brands that are 72% cocoa, almost more bitter than sweet.

It was so yummy, one could easily sit down with a spoon and the carton and wonder what the hell happened a half hour later when you notice 75% of it is gone.

GOP finally doing a better job pointing out Obamacare losing insureds left and right now that it is legal not to have it.

As I pointed out earlier, Scott Adams has pointed out the old media keeps proclaiming these plans are "failures" because the CBO says they will insure fewer.

1. The CBO is clueless, Obamacare only covers half what the CBO predicted. They are politically motivated bureaucrats, and they lean left.

2. If you judge a plan on how many are covered, obviously no GOP plan will be "as good" because it does not mandate citizens buy it. Freedom is good, despite what the left would have you believe.

It wasn't even about health coverage. All about changing the culture, making the government responsible for not only providing insurance, but paying for it.

By the way, the CBO's recap of the bill was phenomenal for most of us, as it will lower the average premium while reducing the deficit $320M.  As Scott Adams pointed out, the old media insists on judging a bill by how many are covered, and to be honest, it's a false narrative...if you do not make it mandatory to have coverage, that darn freedom will lead many people to simple decide to hope for the best, or that the math does not work if you are healthy, young, have few assets, or a several of those things.

Brinson homers back in Colorado Springs. He was right on the ball in his last dozen PA's, and hit many line drives and deep fly balls, but nothing was falling in.

He'll be back, probably as early as later this season or in 2018 to be sure. I would expect Stearns to gauge the market for Broxton and Santana in the offseason, as they will be near peak value as "proven" players and with several years of team control remaining, with OF replacements are a plenty in the system. I don't think I've ever seen a team with 4 OF's at AAA that will undoubtedly have major league careers, though Wren is likely a reserve type in the bigs due to his lack of power.

Bill Bennett wonders on Outnumbered if the GOP should just allow Obamacare to continue, as it will fail and before it does, go through a painful death spiral of increasing premiums, people losing coverage, and doctors refusing care.

Kennedy points out how Obamacare has fallen apart in just 3-4 years, and imagine what would happen in 30. No one wants the responsibility for it. Even Obama is backing away from it now that he's out of office, saying "they should work to improve it" after it being hailed as a savior. We all know the left won't put out a fire at a puppy shelter without looking at the polling numbers first, and while Obamacare has actually gained popularity as it becomes apparent it's on its death bed, it remains hugely unpopular.

Heh. Newsweek thinks Washington is "on edge" due to a SCOTUS seat opening up.

1. I think they misspelled "liberals."

2. Poor old media, thinking this is what concerns folks. Most folks are wondering about the weather over the 4th of July. Elections have consequences. The court will likely move a bit to the right, and since Hank Reid insisted on changing the rules, there's nothing the Dems can do about it. One has to wonder at this point if they aren't just keeping this alive to delay investigations into actual crimes like Lynch, Comey, and all the unmasking of Americans for political purposes.

Let's be honest, the only folks still thinking Trump and Russia have anything but casual connections have to adjust their tin foil hats when they go out to check their Bigfoot trap.

{Empty again! How does that creature that obviously exists yet never dies or no one ever catches on film keep avoiding that deep hole I dug on the trail in the woods! Heck, I've fallen in it several times! And why do people keep asking if I problem have drinking?}

Meanwhile, the GOP is mighty close on health care, and tax cuts should be soon to follow. This may be the greatest contrast I've ever seen between the two parties, including the fact one pretty much always loves their country and the other one insists it needs a massive repair, and it involves massive redistribution of income.

The question is unimportant, the answer is always the same.

One of the Rambling neighbors just walked to her boyfriend's car. He carried an umbrella for her, and held it over her as she got in, and then shut the door.

Good thing the Rambling wife is at a bridal shower (maybe it's a baby shower, I don't really pay attention), because I've told her many times that's frowned upon in today's world as disrespectful to women.

6/25/2017 03:43:00 PM

(6/25/2017 03:36:00 PM) - Al

We are assuming Brinson and Bandy will be sent down, assuming Braun, Villar, and Vogt are ready to go. With Franklin playing today, it would seem to indicate he will not be DL'd, so one would think the third name to be taken off the 25 man would be in the group of Suter, Espino, and Franklin, of which Nick would have to clear waivers first and then be outrighted, whule Paolo and Brent can simply be optioned.

Wilhelmson had a frighteningly bad outing in AAA today, so he looks like he will need some more reps at that level.

6/25/2017 03:36:00 PM

(6/25/2017 01:00:00 PM) - Al

6/25/2017 01:00:00 PM

(6/25/2017 12:37:00 PM) - Al

Crew claims Stephen Vogt, a catcher DFA'd by the A's.

I did not see this coming, but Bandy has struggled since a few homers early in the season. Vogt is also far more versatile than Bandy, as he is a LH bat, has played 70+ games at 1B, and even a few in LF/RF. His career numbers are .312/.409, but as you would expect, it is less than that this year.

We'll see if this indeed the move they make, but with Villar and Braun supposedly ready to return after the off day tomorrow, looks like they'll be flipping 12% of the 25 man. There is a 40 man spot open, and Andrew Susac has been injured and ineffective in AAA (though those two facts are likely not unrelated), so this may not be the worst time to try and slip him through waivers, depending on their long time outlook of him. Vogt is well known to be a "character guy" as well.

I would imagine this might be a good time to go back to a 12 man staff, as not only is there the scheduled day off MON, the SP's have not had a short start for a while.  Espino and Suter both have options as well, and have used their 2017 one also, so they could do some shuttle work to stay fresh.

6/25/2017 11:00:00 AM

(6/25/2017 09:40:00 AM) - Al

Al,

We have talked before via email, and you have even printed a couple of my thoughts. Feel free to do so if you wish.

As you know, my wife and I are basically one issue voters, we are strongly pro-life and always vote that way. Almost without fail, this leads us to voting a straight Republican ticket. We voted for President Trump not because we were fans of his language or persona, but because we knew Hillary would never appoint anything but a judge that was pro choice.

We are appalled by the hatred we have seen since the election. My wife has been saying since inauguration day that the president and all high ranking Republicans are in danger. When the shooting happened at the baseball practice, we reacted with "oh, it's finally happened." Pelosi and Warren could not even act civilized for 24 hours before jumping to conclusions, and the blame game began. As you have said, I feel better knowing my beliefs are nothing like theirs, as they are simply terrible people.

My main thought is a short one. We have no doubt if President Trump would be killed or die of natural causes, or become ill and step down, there would literally massive celebrations in our urban areas, possibly like we've never seen before, at least since 1999.

Our question? Why? VP Pence is far more conservative than President Trump, on social issues even moreso. He would immediately name a replacement for himself, and the administration would move to the right. Even more troubling to Dems, Pence is probably more popular now, never mind the incredible sympathy a death would generate.

Do you see it like this?

Matthew

As an amateur futurist, I would agree with your prediction on all counts. As to your question of why, it returns back to the silliness. It was this way for W too, do not forget. It paused for a bit after 9/11, but it returned. They refuse to admit their ideas and platform have been roundly turned down by all except the northeast and west coast. Their answer has been to move further left, and call those in the middle who have left them stupid rubes who are not smart enough to understand...when, they are plenty smart enough to know they are voting for smaller government, lower taxes, and less regulation.

Seriously, who wants open borders? Obama basically shared Trump's beliefs back when he had to have people vote for him, and just moved further left as he held office. Hillary was not intelligent enough to realize this. Most of us harbor no ill will towards transgender people, but also realize they are a minority of a minority, a rounding error numbers wise.  Most Americans favor abortion in limited form, but are very against it after the child is viable.

Their platform? MORE. More for themselves, of course. Where does that come from? Other people. Most folks realize they, in fact are, indeed, "the other people." In the past couple weeks, we've seen lots of calls that many on the left see this, and see the need for change. Let's hope they remain in the minority.

Inside the draft room for the Bucks. Thoughts of note:

1. Mallory Edens makes an appearance.

2. They keep mentioning "who does ATL want?" so I am not sure if they were the team on the phone or if it was the Nets, who were said to have a deal with the Bucks if MIL's guy was off the board.

3. According to rumor, at least, Brooklyn wanted to move up to choose DJ Wilson.

4. The Bucks sound like they were focused on Wilson after Bam Adebayo was taken 14th.

(6/24/2017 05:30:00 PM) - Al

I was all but alone in my Celtics/Nets opinion 4 years ago, and am on the Butler trade too.

The Bulls got 2 very good young players (I really like Dunn) for Butler, who is an old 28, as he's played a ton of minutes the past few seasons. They got to move up and take the 7th pick, in a draft with 10 very good players, while the TWolves ended up with a 7 foot prospect. Butler's a very solid all around player, but he's far from a guy who is good enough to take a team to the title. Actually, he reminds me a lot of Giannis. The difference? Giannis is still improving, Butler has peaked.

That is the way a balk is supposed to be called. The play continues on, and if they throw the ball away or any positive outcome for the Crew, the play stands.

I'm not saying that balk was obvious, but even I saw it.

Franklin is all but certainly unavailable today. They may well have told him to be the guy to make the point.

Very weak ejection regardless. Everyone in the stadium now realizes how unsure of himself the crew chief is.

The Rambling son gifted me with a cold, so I did not post much yesterday. For whatever reason, he's become very anti medicine, which is strange since he takes a scrip and an OTC all year for minor ailments, which have greatly increased his quality of life.

Meanwhile, having spent many years in retail, where you gotta be in the hospital to call in unless there's other key carriers working (of course, there never is when you feel bad), I look at the recommended dosage and often double it. Why feel crappy when there are cheap symptom minimizers readily available? That said, cold medicines make you feel less miserable, but often make you tired too. I added a caffeine tablet late FRI afternoon and felt better this evening than I have all week.

Lots of tweets floating around saying a SCOTUS retirement is upcoming, as there has been ever since the one justice decided to have a summer party for his staff at an odd time compared to other years, suggesting he might well be done.

Those folks who did not want Trump and never had the forethought to imagine the next president appointing several justices...I told ya so.

They were mighty quiet after the first one was named...Gorsuch seemed to be an ideal, fair choice, insisting they were "above it all" and somehow had never heard of making the best of a situation by choosing the lesser of two evils. With this 2nd one almost certainly upcoming, liberals are trying to figure out how to rewrite the rules and idealists are pretending their decision was anything but petty and selfish.

They ain't having much luck. It's like setting your car on fire because you think it might have a short in the engine and could catch fire on its own...of course, it might not too. Seeing a bad situation and doing all you can to have a negative outcome is not conducive to much. It reminds me of leaving Europe for the new world and then hopping back on a ship when the first winter turns out to be uncomfy and not buffet laden and balmy...and being surprised things still suck.

It's easy to change your mind when your beliefs change with the breeze. Looking back, I doubt George Washington was perfect either, but he beat the alternative.

(6/23/2017 10:55:00 PM) - Al

Heyman also writes that the Brewers, a surprising division leader, could look to add some bullpen help prior to the trade deadline this summer. Milwaukee’s top tier of prospects, however, looks to be nearly untouchable in trade talks, he continues, listing the likes of Josh Hader, Lewis Brinson, Luis Ortiz, Corey Ray and Isan Diaz. Heyman also notes that Travis Shaw was a target of the Brewers’ front office from day one last offseason, though it took until the Winter Meetings in early December to finalize a deal with the Red Sox.--MLBTR

As I have pointed out, it will not take any of the top 20 or so prospects to pick up a bench bat or a bullpen arm or two. The system has a ton of depth, so the difference between #22 and #42 is minimal.

As for Shaw, every team should be looking around for players not being utilized up to their potential. Stearns did this with Broxton, Villar, and any number of others. The great thing is, the cost is often very minimal (not so much with Thornburg, however).

6/23/2017 10:55:00 PM

(6/23/2017 10:45:00 PM) - Al

Sogard left the game when he was unable to swing the bat after being hit in the elbow.

Brinson hit by pitch in the same pinkie he dislocated earlier in the season.

Franklin was double switched for in part because he tweaked his hammy.

All are day to day, just like we all are.

Villar and Braun did play in Appleton last night, and I'm sure the Sky Sox being in New Orleans would make for a quick flight, if needed. No one would mind an early flight at all, I'm sure.

2 real nice plays by ATL in the last couple innings, especially that 5-4-3 DP...could have easily went down the line for a double. Really nice outing by Torres too.

Nelson very fair, not surprising at all considering his long outing SUN. Almost always pay the price at some point.

Mets are open for business.

Reed and Blevins would be a welcome addition to almost any bullpen, and have short term commitments (Blevins has a team option for '18). Plenty of other names at the link if you need offense as well.

Brewers were rumored to have been asking about Seth Lugo a while back, but he is now in the rotation and performing admirably.

I just got an email a day or two ago asking if Feliz had signed. I said he had not, and usually, when a few days pass, players are either negotiating for a 40 man roster spot or other things he wants (no money involved here, but an "out" clause on his minor league deal, for example). The emailer, who was a fan of another team, said, "Who would give him a 40 man spot?"

The answer? The Royals, who also gave him a 25 man spot.

Bucks acquire 76ers 2nd round pick at #46, SG Sterling Brown; sold #48 pick to Clippers.

Brown is 6-5, has a 6-10 wingspan, and shot 45% from 3 in his career.

{No Bronson, you're not the best shooter in the draft. It's embarrassing to say you are.}

(6/22/2017 08:21:00 PM) - Al

Bucks will take DJ Wilson. We will see if it is for them or part of a trade.

Been told Bam Adebayo, TJ Leaf and Justin Jackson are on Bucks' draft radar. Question is whether any of them get to Bucks at No. 17. Texas C Jarret Allen also on short list.--Woelfel

My choice went to the Knicks at 8 or 9. Some had him that early, some had him in the low 20's. Euro players always tough to gauge.

(6/22/2017 06:01:00 PM) - Al

I'm going to guess the Bucks take Frank Ntilikina with their 1st round pick. He's a young 6-5 French point guard with massive upside and a 6-10 wingspan. I am assuming the new GM Hort follows the "high risk, high reward" of his mentor, Hammond.

It's the economy stupid.

And the optimism. Do not fail to disregard that. After 8 years of it patiently being explained to the rubes that 6% was "full employment" and that "spreading the wealth" and "revenue enhancement" were positives, small business owners and those that work for a living love hearing about lower taxes and fewer regulations.

6/22/2017 04:58:00 PM

(6/22/2017 04:24:00 PM) - Al

I've checked about 15 mock drafts today:

--Nigel Hayes is only taken in 1 of them, at #58. Doubtful he will be picked. Another Nigel is likely to be taken late in the 2nd.

--Koenig not taken in any, not mentioned as possible.

--No consensus on Bucks 1st round pick, most go with a tall, very young big man. Zach Collins of Gonzaga would be a near perfect fit, but he is set to go somewhere between 11th and 14th, the Bucks pick #17.

--More consensus on Bucks 2nd round pick than 1st. Edward Sumner of Xavier a popular choice. He's a 6-5 PG who defends, rebounds, and drives well, not yet an outside shooter.

--If I were the GM, I would consider moving up in the 2nd round to take Caleb Swanigan of Purdue. He is not a long or skilled player, but he is a workmanlike type who can rebound, defend, and score without having sets/plays set up for him. I've seen him anywhere from the late 1st to the mid 2nd.

Koenig is not even close to the best shooter in the draft. I question if he's top ten.

I have not seen a mock draft that has his being drafted. That said, players make tons of money in Europe. A few undrafted players make NBA rosters each year. I could certainly imagine him as a backup point guard.

(6/22/2017 08:00:00 AM) - Al

It's not just Pelosi.

Obama spent 8 years complaining about all that was "wrong" with the USA and going around the world apologizing for what makes it great. Sanders thinks the socialism solves all ills, despite historical evidence to the contrary; and Schumer, who has made himself the new voice of the party, simply says everything Trump proposes is bad; even if it means saying things like "Comey should be fired, I can't believe he fired Comey" within days of each other.

Negativity, unpatriotic behavior, the answer to everything is "tax and spend;" being totally out of touch with middle America on social issues, including open borders, legal abortion until seconds before birth, far too much emphasis on LGTB issues, and a constant "we know better than you because you're so stupid" attitude is at the top of the list, but the list is long.

Counsell said Suter was called up to make a "pitching move" but Wily told them about this injury today, so that's what was done.

My guess of what happened might be pretty accurate.

(6/21/2017 10:30:00 PM) - Al

Why they lose.

You really think independents and swing voters see that behavior and say, "Ooooo, that's the group I want to join."

6/21/2017 10:30:00 PM

(6/21/2017 09:28:00 PM) - Al

A couple emails asking if I think Peralta is really injured.

As Doug used to say, the player has to sign a injury statement and so does a trainer or doctor, so I assume he is. However, this time of year, almost every player could honestly sign such a statement...no one's 100%.

Neither are most construction and road workers, or roofers; who often only work 6-8 months a year, often 60-70 hours every week the weather cooperates. They fight through it, and wait for a rainy day to rest up and hope they feel better. Of course, if they put on shingles a bit slower, odds are no one even notices. If Braun jogs to 1B and gets thrown out by a step, people see that.

Giving Wily time off and the ability to go pitch a while in meaningless minor league games might well be just what he needs. The "time" aspect of this is a bit strange...if he was injured, why the delay in announcing it? Did they try to DFA him and he said "Hey, I'm hurt. I need to be talk to my union rep." Who knows? Guys do this all the time. You may recall Brandon Kintzler suddenly discovered an injury after being sent down a few years ago. They called him back up, DL'd him, and then outrighted him when he declared himself healthy. Kintzler is still effective in MIN, but I don't think the Crew felt he was trustworthy (and, if memory serves, they needed a 40 man spot).

Suter activated, Peralta to the DL with a calf strain, the "in" injury for 2017.

6/21/2017 06:58:00 PM

(6/21/2017 05:21:00 PM) - Al

Here's a simple idea...quit your bitching, and either cut money elsewhere, or go to Marquette county and ask them how they do it.

Teacher's unions have been claiming for years the only fix is spending more money, so they've done it, and guess what? No improvement. Why?

Throwing money at a problem does not work. It never has, and it never will. The only ones that think that way are simply looking to punish the successful.

6/21/2017 05:21:00 PM

(6/21/2017 04:51:00 PM) - Al

Suter will not be activated until at least tomorrow. This would seem to indicate a move is in the works like a trade (Peralta?) or trying to outright someone (Franklin?) and seeing if he is claimed.

In all my years of doing Ramblings, I never recall a Brewers' player showing up at the park without a roster spot. You often hear after the fact a player has been up for a day or two, waiting at the Pfister for a call that it is OK to come to the park.

Villar and Braun both begin rehab tomorrow with the Timber Rattlers. Those kids should be eating good for a few days.:) Both could be back in the majors as early as next TUE. Brinson and Franklin would seemingly be on the cusp, though they cut cut back to 12 pitchers as well.

Hat tips to Adam of MLB.com.

6/21/2017 04:51:00 PM

(6/21/2017 04:39:00 PM) - Al

UPDATE: CC says Suter will be activated soon, possibly before tonight.

Brent Suter is at Miler Park, no move announced yet.

Jesus Aguilar taking grounders at 3B as well, per Adam.

Many are assuming Peralta, but I might guess Davies is being removed from the rotation and either Suter or Espino will start SUN, or both will pitch out of the bullpen for now and another pitcher (Jungmann?) will be brought up to start.

Hey, I am a contrarian.

Could be another reliever needs to be DL'd too. Many have not pitched for a while.

I have seen numerous mentions of Dems admitting they have no message and have to adjust before the midterms.

6/21/2017 02:46:00 PM

(6/21/2017 02:07:00 PM) - Al

Cloyd is 30 and does not have much of a ceiling, but he has been spectacular in recent times in AAA, and his BB/K ratios and HR/9 are the highlight of his resume. Until the Crew fills that 40th spot on their 40 man, any veteran reliever is possible.

Cloyd's "fastball" was 86 in 2013, and 90 this season, so he has made some adjustments over the years.

6/21/2017 02:07:00 PM

(6/21/2017 01:36:00 PM) - Al

The Brewers won't have their AAA team in Colorado Springs after the 2018 season. The AAA club will move to San Antonio, with the rookie league Helena team (coincidentally, also a Brewers' affiliate) moving to the altitude of CS.

The Crew may not keep those affiliations, as the Astros want SA to be their AAA team, but, though there will always be a "worst" AAA team, it will not be as extreme as Colorado Springs. MIL would love to have a closer home at a modern facility with neutral conditions. But, they do not have the tradition or history to do much more than ask politely and beg. AAA teams also much prefer winning, and until this year, the Crew has used their AAA team for development, and not worried about wins and losses.

Time will tell if they are able to get a better match or if they just get stuck with who is left. The effect on the big league team is minimal. Doug was said to actually prefer CS to a couple western options (Albuquerque and Fresno were said to be the teams) due to proximity to a major airport and ability to get to Milwaukee in a few hours.

6/21/2017 01:36:00 PM

(6/21/2017 12:57:00 PM) - Al

Greg Monroe "opts in" to his player option for next year, meaning the Bucks will be close to the salary cap whether or not Spencer Hawes opts in or out, and/or if Tony Snell is brought back.

I would say this makes the Bucks more likely to move expensive players not in the "core," which would include John Henson, Mirza Teletovic, and Matthew Dellavedova. I really enjoy Telly and Delly, but tough decisions are bound to have to take place when you have Middleton and Giannis making $36M by themselves.

Forgot the GA special election was today, haven't been on Twitter for awhile.

Handel's party's turned decidedly festive: mayor of nearby Roswell hops on stage, beer in hand, to predict a win and read out early results.--Politico

Handel is the Republican and the only candidate that can vote in the race, as the Dem does not live in the district. And yes, I'm being serious. Handel is up with 53% with about half the vote in, but I don't know if it's rural GA or metro areas that have not been counted.

Noted investor Charles Payne said MSNBC was disgusted and complained it had been a rainy day and that "Dems don't vote in the rain."

Again, I'm being serious.

Dem outspent Handel by 7x, though PAC money balanced that out somewhat.

EDIT: Handel has been declared the winner.

However, they won't sign many drafted players because they have no roster spots.

(6/20/2017 02:30:00 PM) - Al

I have briefly talked about this before, but I have never went in depth on it. We do not know if the Brewers will remain in contention, or even over the .500 mark. If they do, I certainly do not expect any franchise altering trades. However, a minor addition or two, a bench bat (sorry, an addition to the position player group), a bullpen piece (maybe even two) could probably be expected.

The Brewers, like all teams, can only protect 40 players in the offseason. Right now, their 40 man roster has 39 players on it. They will have to add 5-9 prospects to it (Woodruff already has been, so perhaps on the low end). Usually, teams lose several free agents each offseason, but the Brewers have very few of the traditional type of FA's (6+ years experience, expiring contract), so they will have to find room in other ways; either through trades, nontenders, or not offering players a major league contract.

So, basically, a trade involving Brett Phillips or any true prospect, is very unlikely. However, there are others either on the 40 or that will have to be added to the 40 to be protected from the Rule 5 draft that could be dealt, or risk losing them for nothing, either in minor league free agency or the Rule 5.

Two quick lists, one I will call "bottom feeders"...no offense intended, they are on the 40 man, but not the 25 man, and are not considered top prospects. However, any or all may have nice major league careers, but probably will never be stars.

The 2nd is a list of guys who will have to be added to the 40 in the offseason or risk being lost in the Rule 5. I will asterisk the "prospects" that are ranked in the top 30 by MLB.com, as those are far more likely to be protected. And no, I am not 100% positive on this list, as rules are sometimes tough for the layman to follow.

Bottom feeders on the 40 man
Cravy (AAA DL)
Houser (AAA DL, will miss season due to injury)
Jungmann

Rule 5 eligible

Lengthy piece on the Brewers' rebuild.

Many of the things we have discussed here are talked about...picking up talent by any means possible; minor league free agency, waiver claims, not giving up on young players after initial struggles, and so on.

No mention of other consistent Stearns' ideals...versatility, athleticism, taking walks, extra base power...give them time, they'll eventually pick up on it.

As I suspected, Overton does not last long, Zach Lee DFA'd.

Lee has not had success for a while, and never in the majors, but was a top prospect as recently as 2014. Sinking fastball and a very good slider. He might be a claim and stash possibility, especially for a team not contending.

Stearns says there was interest in Feliz, but salary made it not happen, hence, h was released.

DS has shown little interest thus far in eating salary to, in effect, "buy" a prospect or two. Not sure if that's a rule he lives by or if he just has not found the right deal.

Feliz has had good velocity, but his fastball location was way off, and he never was able to get anything going with his breaking ball. He'll probably have a dozen teams interested in him, because you can't teach 96 mph. He might even end up with a 40 man spot from the get go.

6/19/2017 05:41:00 PM

(6/19/2017 05:29:00 PM) - Al

Just saw one of these know it alls patiently explain to us numbskulls that the Brewers won't be signing all their draft picks this year because...they don't have enough roster spots in the minors.

Now, in reality, no team ever signs every pick, I think last season the Crew signed 37 of 40, a very high amount. This season, they drafted a lot of high ceiling high schoolers, who are unlikely to sign, as they hope to go to college and emerge much higher draft picks. They likely drafted a couple of them just in case a high pick is found to be injured on his pre draft physical and signs for well ls than expected.

The irony here is, they have signed 6 undrafted free agents, which, if they do not have enough roster spots for the drafted players, they certainly do not have enough for any of those, making his entire hypothesis a load of crap.

Every team will make room for players they want. Roster spots are not a concern for any club, as teams use the minor league DL as a taxi squad, as players do not have to be injured, there's no one checking on that stuff. It's all just fellas proving how little they know by bragging about how much they know.

The 34-year-old Hardy isn’t exactly an irreplaceable cog at this stage of his career, evidenced by his .211/.248/.308 batting line in 239 plate appearances.--MLBTR

Been a sharp decline for JJ, who is a good example of why teams have to be careful when expecting players past their mythical prime of 27 to continue producing at a respectable level.

He's still above average in the field, worth about 20 runs (per UZR) and 11 runs (per DRS) since 2015, but being worth 6 runs in the field a season does not make up for getting out 75% of the time. One has to wonder if he'll just call it a career after this year, as his contract is up and it's difficult to believe any team will see him as an everyday player at 35. He hasn't even put up a 750 OPS since 2011...and only a 700 OPS once since 2014.

I love it when people tell it like it is.

History will nickname Obama's presidency "The Fiction Years," or spomething even less kind. From healthcare to foreign policy, it was just one lie after another, with info and scoops promised to the old media that happily spread the fibs as fact, and never mentioned pallets of cash or the fact that your plan will be gone and your doc may not be affiliated with your new plan.

Because they know better.

Same reason Bernie says we only need one deodorant. He thinks one size fits all...of course, if you're allergic to one now, you just throw it away and ask your pharmacist to help you choose another one.

Under Bernie, you'd be miserable (you would be anyway, because we all know the economy would fall apart...they make everyone "equal" by making everyone poor...well, you can't make everyone successful) AND you'd either stink or be googling "how do I make deo at home" within a year of his killing the American dream and then blaming "bad luck" for the results.

Because they know better.

6/18/2017 05:30:00 PM

(6/18/2017 04:44:00 PM) - Al

Not as good as Nelson's, but Mike Blazek goes 7.2 frames and gives up 2 runs at Colorado Springs...though some may argue that's a better performance given the altitude. 3.42 ERA for the season, but his previous start at Colorado Springs was rough...if you remove that one, he has a 1.80 ERA for the campaign.

I'm sure plenty of teams wish they would have claimed him when he was removed from the 40 earlier this season. Amazingly, Jungmann is also pitching well in his first 4 outings at AAA (1.27 ERA, 24-10K/BB), as is Wang, who has been used solely in relief this season (1.70 ERA, 23-11 K/BB, and a .150 BAA versus LH hitters).

6/18/2017 04:44:00 PM

(6/18/2017 04:15:00 PM) - Al

The funny thing is, even though Nelson went a good inning longer than Brewers' SP's usually do, he still did not hit the magic number of 120 that many teams allow their SP's to hit a dozen times a season, and don't even think twice about.

I know a few years ago, someone kept track of all the pitchers that went 120+ pitches for a season and their next starts was about a run higher ERA than average...and two starts afterward was also well higher; about 2/3rd's or 3/4th's of a run. Hopefully, Jimmy will not be bothered.

I would not have been surprised at all if the Crew had tomorrow or THU off, giving him an extra day of rest between starts, but given they do not, I did not think they would bring him out for the 9th. The 8th was not a surprise at all, as he did not even have 100 at that point. It's also interesting to note Knebel has been rested on day 3 twice in a row now after pitching back to back. I assume this is a result of the accumulation of his work up to this point, and maybe with a side of his high pitch innings (on average). As Billy Beane said, strikeouts are a "pound of flesh"...they always take 3 pitches, and often 5-7, or even more.

6/18/2017 04:15:00 PM

(6/18/2017 01:49:00 PM) - Al

Overton is interesting for a number of reasons.

--Despite horrible overall numbers, lefties put up a .188/.200 line against him this season. That's a mighty small sample, but...

--He's a former 2nd round pick, and is is only 25.

--He was stunningly good as a SP his first 3 minor league seasons, ERA's of 1.95, 3.64, and 3.29, the latter in AAA.

--Always struck out 3 times as many as he walked. Also, only allowed 0.5 homers per 9 frames.

I won't argue he struggled in the majors, but pitching mostly middle relief after starting your entire career, and debuting in the bigs 3 years after being drafted is not really being set up for success either.

He is not a hard thrower, and looks like mostly a fastball/change up pitcher, so long term, his future is probably out of the bullpen, maybe with some spot starter usage.

If nothing else, he might be a good guy to claim and then send right back through waivers to let him work himself back into prospect status in AAA.

6/18/2017 01:49:00 PM

(6/18/2017 01:17:00 PM) - Al

If you do not understand what a small sample is, this is a nice example.

One would expect a near .500 record on any given day over the year. If you add these 2 together, it's almost exactly .500. But the smaller the sample, the more likely it is to be "off."

If you do not understand this, you are likely to wear Reynold's Wrap products on your noggin and embarrass yourself often on matters of common sense. For instance, you are likely to come to the conclusion that many people who voted for a black man twice and then voted for a white man did so because they are "racist."

(6/18/2017 12:54:00 PM) - Al

I've been warning you about this for the past 15 years. When you start to excuse bad behavior, the bad behavior will continue...and get worse.

I see lots of folks are "excusing" the vandalism and lawlessness in the Twin Cities area too. None of those criminals would give a damn if a cop got shot. In fact, many would react with great joy. I do not expect law enforcement, or anyone else for that matter, to wait around while a guy either grabs his gun (police officer's version) or reaches his hand out of sight (witness version). Many would say the cop should have stood there and waited to get shot because "that's unlikely to happen."

Many are out of touch buffoons. I know I'm right, because she who is always wrong disagrees.

Minor league teams have been known to have several Faith Nights a season, especially in the south, as they often get a capacity crowd, or very close to it. I would assume this is the start of a tradition at Miller Park.
