BUMPED to the top, scroll down for new posts until late afternoon.
BREAKING--Cubs acquire Jose Quintana from White Sox for Eloy Jiménez, Dylan Cease, Matt Rose and Bryant Flete.
Jimenez and Cease were the Cubs #1/2 prospects by both Minor League Ball and MLB.com. Jimenez is the #8 prospect overall, Cease #63, but both are very young, likely 3+ years from the bigs. Neither Rose or Flete were ranked by either.
Because of their proximity to the majors, many would have considered Brinson and Hader a better package, overall, their rankings are 13th and 31st at the beginning of the year. Luis Ortiz, who came over in the Lucroy trade and is in AA, was ranked 51st, while Isan Diaz, who came over in the Segura/Anderson swap, was ranked 54th.
Of course, they are no longer ranked exactly like that, as that was before the 2017 season began. And, we have no idea if MIL offered any of the above. However, given the rankings, that seems like a good idea of what it would have taken, or at least a reason projection.
The Cubs vaunted system is suddenly quite weak. They have graduated or dealt most of their talent, they now only have 7 "average major league" or above prospects pre draft (the Brewers, for example, have 16). I, along with many others, expected this wave of talent to lead them to a success cycle of 5+ years. They still could accomplish that, of course, but judging by their moves, they look to feel their window is far shorter as well. That said, I don't think they care.
Yankees/Brewers/Astros were all "involved in the process" of the Quintana trade, per Fox. What that means is a massive mystery. I can certainly imagine the Brewers offering 2 lesser top 100 prospects plus 2 better lower level ones than ended up going to the Sox.
Of course, every team has solid "secondary" prospects...that's why they're often referred to as lottery tickets.
More to follow..keep refreshing.
