Al's Ramblings

If I'm elected president, this conversation would inevitably take place:

Staff: And then on Tuesday afternoon, you have that ceremony where you pardon a couple turkeys.

Me: That's what you think.

Staff: But, it's tradition.

Me: Tradition is just a word for doing the same stupid crap. Grow the hell up. I ain't doing it.

Then, I would excuse myself for a presidential nap.

Last week--Moore is guilty as sin. Quit victim shaming!

This week--She's just a whore. Hell, she probably voted for Trump. And she's ugly, stupid, and fat. We love you Al! Don't quit!

Consistency is not their strength.

Adam says no one wants to give Arietta market value.

I'd rather have Archer too. That said, Arietta plus the 4 young players Archer would cost in trade sound pretty appealing as well.

Years ago, Mark A said you almost always have to overpay for free agents, and that's OK, because you don't lose any prospects or young players. Basically, it's better to lose money than young talent. I tend to agree.

I like brussels and onions, but the idea this will be anyone's "favorite" shows out of touch they are.

(11/20/2017 01:00:00 PM) - Al

Ironic, huh?

It's almost as if punishing folks without due process is a bad idea. That's why whenever I hear some insist the Constitution is outdated because "they know better," I wonder if they have really thought about it.

It's easy to say when it's just some rube, and not yourself.

Imagine Santana to the Giants, in place of Stanton. Not quite as good, but far younger and cheaper. Panik and Beede would make sense given needs too.

Stanton, L3Y---.354/.580
Santana, L3Y--.358/.477

Look, I like Santana. I just think testing his market makes a lot of sense.

I like Cobb, Chatwood, and Sabathia far more considering the money they've been projected to get and the length of predicted contracts. That said, Arietta and Darvish likely to have best results next year and year after.

Put another way, I'd much rather have Cobb and a couple Swarzak types than Arietta. Of course, we have no idea if Swarzak types want to play in MIL. This is how I feel when I hear someone bought a $70K Escalade too...I'd much prefer a $30K vehicle and money in the bank.

That said, I'm sure I'd enjoy the Escalade...

11/20/2017 12:22:00 PM

(11/20/2017 12:18:00 PM) - Al

Same feeling I've been getting.

Momentum strongly on his side. Allred won't release yearbook. No reasonable explanation for DA initials. In minds of anyone who is not a staunch Dem, he's gone from being a pervert to a guy who likes younger women...hardly a rare trait.

(11/20/2017 08:00:00 AM) - Al

This is exactly what I've been saying.

They are saying his tweets are terrible because they're so effective. He talks directly to his people without the old media framing it the way they want.

They barely reported him negotiating their release, and Mr. Ball, who can barely speak a sentence and is a widely known buffoon, managed to make himself look even stupider.

Trump is an absolute master at pointing out the obvious and then allowing intelligence challenged folks to react poorly.

11/20/2017 08:00:00 AM

(11/20/2017 06:30:00 AM) - Al

Too bad to see these liberal finger pointers found guilty in the court of public opinion, 35 years after the alleged "crime."

Turnabout is fair play.

That's a shame.

(11/20/2017 03:30:00 AM) - Al

Years ago, I remember reading a story about an employee on a large cattle ranch in Utah who was convicted of stealing a dozen cattle, but authorities and the ranch believed he had stolen over 200 over the years, taking about 10-12 head every month or two over the 3 years he had worked there.

I guess when you have thousands, no one bothers keeping track.

12-2 for the week. Tied for 4th out of 114 at NFL Pick Watch.

89-57 for the season, tied for 61st of 114.

6-4 for the eliminator season. Tied for 17th of 30 in my group, 2 remain perfect.

Got the eliminator right, 10-3 after SUN.

Someone pointed out today that in 5 years, women are going to be wondering why men never talk to them.

Because to many gals, a man complimenting a woman's appearance should be considered a felony, and certainly a cause for immediate termination.

If everything is offensive, nothing is offensive.

Bernie shows the guts to make a statement about Bill's lies and mistreatment of women.

This guy would give a roundabout, nonsensical response to whether he prefers Raisinettes or Goobers at the movies. And, at the end of the day, you'd have no idea if he prefers dried grapes or a chocolate covered legume.

The only thing he's sure of? He wants a lot more of your money, and we don't need 23 deodorants.

Question as to why MLB teams wait until the final day to add players to the 40 man.

1. In case they suffer an injury.

2. Insurance and other fringe benefits cost.

I guess the main reason is...why not wait? It's not like they're going to forget.

About time.

I remember a good speaker and a terrible leader talking about bringing a gun to a knife fight. Fight like a girl, and sleep well at night, knowing you did all you could.

11/19/2017 04:07:00 PM

(11/19/2017 03:58:00 PM) - Al

Many fans seem to think the Crew will add 4-5 prospects to the 35 already on the 40 man to make it 39 or 40 total.

That's partially true, but I assume Stearns will nontender other players as well, to make room for free agent additions, as well as the plethora of players who will be nontendered and released by the 29 other teams. Players have to be added to the 40 by tomorrow night, but players can be released at any time.

I would guess several from the "on the cusp" section will be let go, in one form or another (if they clear waivers, they can be outrighted, which is why teams tend to wait as long as possible so 40's are close to full)...depending on how the braintrust perceives their value, a couple from the "near locks" may be released as well (Jeffress being the most likely, as he may sign a minor league contract to remain in MIL). Remember, many of the latter group are out of options, so if they are not expected to make the club...or to be able to get something of value in a trade from another team, they could be let go sooner rather than later.

Almost word for word what they blasted the people of AL for saying.

11/19/2017 12:09:00 PM

(11/19/2017 11:04:00 AM) - Al

I'm seeing people saying Perez, Villar, Aguilar, Jungmann, Guerra, and Jeffress could all be nontendered, along with more obvious guesses like Vogt, Drake, and Bandy.

Any player could be, but with the possible exception of Jeffress (who might be willing to sign a minor league deal with MIL), the others would seem to have value in trade. Guerra, Aguilar, and Jungmann are still minimum salary guys also...I would think they would have a bidding war of sorts, if nontendered, as each would have plenty of suitors, probably getting 40 man spots due to the amount of teams with interest. Jungmann was probably one of the top 5 AAA SP's in the game last season, never mind he tossed a lot of his innings at altitude. I hope the Crew signs a couple similar solid AAA vets to minor league contracts this offseason.

(11/19/2017 09:58:00 AM) - Al

Well, to be fair, most of us knew it would happen. It took almost two decades, but they even managed to throw Bill Clinton under the bus to protect Franken.

Why? It's all about politics, even when it's really about assaulting women.

(11/19/2017 05:00:00 AM) - Al

I pointed this out too.

Remember, Moore should step down...he is accused.

Franken should keep his seat and face an investigation...though he admits his guilt (probably because he allowed a picture to be taken, because yes, he's that stupid).

You got that? But that makes no sense, you say. Why should the one who was accused 40 years later step down (and it certainly appears the main evidence was forged, unless Moore signed his assitant's initials himself, good freaking God); while the admitted pervert be investigated?

Look at their parties.

By the way, I missed the news many thousands of protesters were in downtown Mpls today, vandalizing property, throwing garbage on the ground, and wearing genitalia hats?

I'll wait while you check...

McCoy has more patriotism in his little toe than the entire NFL has.

To be fair, however, the NFL has McCoy thoroughly defeated when it comes to abusing women.

(11/18/2017 07:53:00 PM) - Al

If the NFL had a ounce of a clue, they'd fire Goodell and let Jones run the whole league.

The irony is, Goodell has been wrong on every decision he's made, but they are giving him a huge raise and telling him to keep it up.

Meanwhile, they're paying the networks back $500M due to lower ratings, which were completely avoidable just by following the existing rules, put in place by a businessman that knew how to not chase away viewers.

They deserve their downfall, and judging by their lack of a stop loss plan, it will be long and painful.

As we talked about earlier, Yankees trade a fringe 40 man prospect for a pair of lower minor leaguers.

I expect all 4 to be added by the Crew before the MON deadline.

Others have predicted Devin Williams will be as well...I would not, but that does not mean they won't.

Many team have far more, and I expect to see an active Rule 5 draft. The Yankees and Blue Jays could lose multiple players, or decide to make a trade or two to bring back younger players that do not need to be protected, or a 2 for 1 swap.

Seeing an awful lot of confidence from the GOP about the AL race. The fake yearbook signature, the defiant nature of Moore and his wife, and an overall us versus them attitude (made even worse by the fact the "old guard" Republicans that said Moore should step down have not said boo about Franken)...also, many have simply stated the obvious...Allred and her ilk should have waited longer, as they have been put on the defensive, as Allred refuses to say the yearbook is not forged, and even worse, it sure looks fake, to say the least.

If Clinton would have resigned just after the halfway point of his 2nd term, Al Gore could have served 10 years.

Too selfish to do so. The rules do not apply to the Clintons.

Note how quiet they've been about Franken. They know they're irrelevant.

11/18/2017 12:45:00 PM

(11/18/2017 11:30:00 AM) - Al

I know what happened.

First, they chose an inexperienced senator with no experience. Then, they chose a real estate, self promoting reality show celeb.

Sooner or later, one would think she would get the hint. People do not like her. And once you see what a pouty, whiny, terrible person she is, you understand why.

I was chatting with a gal at the office at a meeting about a month before the election. She said this, and I'm sure she wasn't alone:

"I almost always vote Democrat. I would love to see a woman president. I'm not fond of Trump. But, I am having a really hard time supporting her. She reminds me of women I have known my entire life, that will talk nice to your face and then badly behind your back.

I just don't like her. At all."

No idea how she voted, but that's what happened.

They just don't like her.

It's different when they do it.

The Dems are far better at circling the wagon than the GOP is. They pinched their nose and supported Hillary right to the end. They quickly have done the same for Franken.

However, if they think they are going to attract moderates and independents by defending Franken, I wish them luck. My Facebook feed is full of apolitical folks (and conservatives) complaining about the sudden hypocrisy. Several complaints about those on the left shaming Ms. Tweeden for her Playboy and other modeling pics as well...that is often called "slut shaming," though that's when conservatives do it, as well.

(11/17/2017 02:24:00 PM) - Al

Hearing lots of teams have difficult decisions to make on how to add players to protect for the Rule 5 draft. This may lead to more nontenders than we are used to, which will be especially meaningful to add to the depth at weak positions in the FA pool...mainly SP.

As for the Crew, even a player I thought was nearly a sure bet, Jeffress, may be squeezed out as they leave up to about 5 spots open for FA additions.

No offense to the author, but I sure don't see Liggins' spot in jeopardy, or Terry's.

Vaughn barely plays and had his option for next season declined. Replacing him with another young player would soften the blow a bit, and would balance out the roster more as well.

I'm not sure what the rules are as far as players going to the G League now, but 2nd round pick Sterling Brown should be getting regular minutes with Oshkosh, unless he's needed as a practice player in MIL. DJ Wilson is probably needed as depth with Teletovic injured, but he should too. A month has passed since the season began, and neither has seen 20 minutes of court time, even in garbage time.

11/17/2017 11:15:00 AM

(11/17/2017 10:00:00 AM) - Al

Why are we settling these?

Let the guilty pay their own settlements. This is taxpayer money. This is why they have been so hesitant to criticize Menendez...he's just the latest.

If you ever wanted proof they just look at the taxpayers as an open wallet, here it is.

This is why the mock outrage about Moore was there. They're a bastion of bad behavior, and they are suddenly outed. One would think the names would leak soon. This may turn out to be the story of the decade.

As with Franken, many are chose to look the other way simply because he has a D before his name. Even worse, proud feminists like Hillary and Chelsea did too. That's how we all knew they were full of crap long before the last election.

Badgers played great versus #15 Xavier, tied up with a couple minutes left, and as the X coach said, didn't get a break the rest of the way.

That's a good young team. Hopefully, they grow as the season goes on. Davison is as good a freshman as I can recall, and Happ and Trice are really, really good. I'm not sure if they'll keep the tournament streak going or not, but they'll be fun to watch.

I'm certainly not offended by Muslims or anyone else's prayers...why would an atheist care? The only people more irritating than them is the overly religious folks who insist everyone else is going to hell because they may interpret something differently.

It's king of like one cares that they do not eat meat, dairy, or eggs; they do care that they tell others what they should do. Shut the hell up, and you look terrible.

(The Brewers) haven’t ruled out taking a look at one of the big-time pitchers, but it doesn’t seem like a likelihood – at least not yet.

They have extra outfielders, and they are taking calls. Nobody is seen as untouchable, but Lewis Brinson is probably close.

The Brewers could consider trying to lock up some productive young players this spring, including Travis Shaw, Domingo Santana, Orlando Arcia and a couple others.--Heyman

Stearns leaks very little.

(11/16/2017 05:17:00 PM) - Al

I'm not calling him to step down either. Of course, I have said Moore should proceed as well, if he wishes. The only rule about running for Senate is to be 30+ and an American. The citizens of Alabama can decide. Of curse, if he's going to run and lose, I would prefer he step down...but that's not my call, it's his. He won the primary.

Of course, I am not hearing those who insisted Moore step down after a 40 year old accusation, with no proof other than a very phony looking, makes no sense signature...say Franken should do the same after a 10 year old accusation with proof.

Consistency is not their strength.

11/16/2017 05:17:00 PM

(11/16/2017 04:28:00 PM) - Al

Many are defending Franken, even with proof and the admission of pitiful behavior.

If one did not know better, one might think it's directly related to his party affiliation.

Consistency is not their strength.

If they were uniform, they should be calling for him to resign immediately. Heck, as others have pointed out, MN is very likely to be a safe Dem seat, they elected Paul Wellstone, who was probably further left than Bernie "it should be free!" Sanders.

By the way, note how quiet Hilary and Chelsea have been. They know. And they blasted Bill's accusers as liars, sluts, and worse; while going after them without an ounce of mercy for decades.

ADDED: I do admit, I do give Franken credit for not diverting unwanted attention by ending his statement with "I will now live my life as a gay man."

Frat boy Jon Favreau is said to be very disgusted with Franken's behavior.

As pointed out at the link, who could have seen this coming? Ted Kennedy looks like an angel compared to these fellas...and he killed a woman, and then covered it up.

By the way, he served for decades, with nary a peep about his felonious conduct.

11/16/2017 01:16:00 PM

(11/16/2017 01:07:00 PM) - Al

Your hypocrisy is showing.

Remember, many said they would vote to unseat Moore if he won, over a mere accusation 4 decades old, which is now being shown to be highly questionable, as the main piece of evidence looks as fake as my concern for the feelings of snowflakes.

Now that a sitting senator has admitted to wrongdoing, with photographic proof, let's see if that scenario is even brought up. As many have said, quickly calling for an ethics investigation is code for "let's pretend we care while we let this run its course."

(11/15/2017 11:28:00 PM) - Al

It's a forgery, and an embarrassingly bad one. You can tell with the naked eye, never mind analysis.

As I said as soon as the yearbook was presented, this might be the thing that destroys the accuser.

I can't tell you how many times I and other folks have had to go back to someone's house to sign a document, one of dozens on a contract or set of forms. It's humiliating as anything, it makes you feel like an idiot. I've had coworkers have to go back twice or three times. But you cannot fake a signature, or even initials, it's a crime and the punishment is loss of license.

11/15/2017 11:28:00 PM

(11/15/2017 08:51:00 PM) - Al

That's a damn shame.

11/15/2017 08:51:00 PM

(11/15/2017 08:10:00 PM) - Al

As soon as I saw that signature, I thought it might turn things a bit. The 7's are signed two different ways, no one signs a yearbook in DEC, and there appears to be two different colors of ink. It raises more questions than it creates problems.

If this is a forgery of a stamped signature, it will put plenty of doubt in the mind of voters. Some polls showed him ahead even after the allegations.

11/15/2017 08:10:00 PM

(11/15/2017 07:27:00 PM) - Al

This seems a lot lot a "look at me, look at me" moment for Johnson. All GOP votes are critical; and the ones getting the ink seem to be the ones who seem to have no idea what they want from day to day, McCain, Collins, and so on.

That does not go unnoticed. If Johnson has a pet issue or cause, there's no better way to get leadership to listen to him. Squeaky wheel, grease, and all that.

I was just thinking today, for a decade or so, I was in retail management, and we'd have a district meeting, and there would be about a dozen of us in a room with our boss, and rarely did we all agree on fact, many were so far off base, it was painful to listen to them. I promise you the 52 senators feel the same way, as not only do they all have different priorities, some do not have to worry about reelection, and some do.

This has been in the old media for a couple years, though the scale of it has never been reported.

If I heard about it in central WI, everyone in entertainment knew it. The Sgt. Schultz defense is not nearly as likely as the "they didn't care" defense.

One gets the feeling this would have been a bit more of an issue if CK would have been a conservative...

(11/15/2017 10:12:00 AM) - Al

I must admit, seeing the old media slowly turn on the Clintons now that they realize they're never going to have an ounce of power again simply reinforces how much they've been in the bag for them.

Those "conspiracy theories" seem to be close to the truth.

He won't get 7 years, or $210M.

Remember, Santana has pretty much identical numbers over the past 3 years. JD had a great half season in Arizona, which is a tremendous offensive environment.

MLBTR has him at 6y/$150M. Fangraphs had him at 6y/$156M, and FG's readers put him at 5y/$106M.

I'll go with 5y/$120M.

Just a couple thoughts...if you think the Crew might trade Santana (I know, I'm the only one), keep an eye on the teams that are rumored to be interested in Stanton.

If you feel the Crew will trade Broxton (I get it, they have tons of CF depth), keep an eye on the teams that are said to be interested in Lo Cain.

12-2 for the week. Tied for 4th out of 114 at NFL Pick Watch.

89-57 for the season, tied for 61st of 114.

6-4 for the eliminator season. Tied for 17th of 30 in my group, 2 remain perfect.

Most of the fan focus on FA 2B for the Crew has been on Walker, which is understood since he already played for the team last year.

However, as I have noted before, Nunez is a better fit in many ways, including his versatility (2B/SS/3B/OF, and he could certainly handle 1B as well) which is something Stearns seems to adore. Also of note, Nunez would pair with Sogard better than Walker, though Nunez does have reverse splits, as he hits RHP better than LHP. He also has far more speed than Walker, and Stearns seems to love athleticism...however, he does not walk as much as Neil. Nunez is also a couple years younger.

Those who insist Roy Moore should drop out and go away, yet worship Bill Clinton despite his many flaws and accusations against are some of the most shortsighted and most hypocritical folks on the planet.

As I said earlier, I have no idea if Moore is an angel or a devil, but the fact this is dropping a few weeks before an election is not a coincidence.

Quick thoughts on Roy Moore.

1. Is it coincidence this accusation from 40 years ago is coming out a few weeks before the Senate election? No.

2. James Woods said it best...due process is dead.

3. Especially unhappy to see McCain and Romney blindly call for him to not run. McCain was accused of bad behavior by the old media who would have done anything to keep him out of office. He seems to have forgotten that completely. Romney was accused of killing a woman by denying her health care for cancer. Was that true? Of course not, and we defended him.

4. What's especially galling? Neither has said a word about the sitting Dem senator Menendez, who is on trial right now, but is still serving and voting.

Of course, as a resident of central WI, I have no idea if Moore is the greatest man on the planet or a scumbag. However, this seems a lot like the Gophers' football scandal late last season, in which they suspended numerous players on the word of an accuser, and if memory serves, only a single charge or two came of it, and I think a single player pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, nothing even remotely like the very serious charges put forth.

By the way, the fact President Trump endorsed Moore's opponent in the primary tells me he probably had heard rumors of this. Crazy like a fox.

As I have said a few times now, people who consider running for office have to now think about everything in their past...and everything that may not have happened in their past, but an ex spouse or significant other might say happened. And, you know what? That keeps really good people from running.

572 minor league free agents.

I'm sure the Brewers have been going over this list for a week or two and have a list of about 50-100 names they want to pursue (and no, they do not want more than a dozen or so), and probably have another list sorted by position that they will eventually use to fill holes in the system (as in "We need a 3B and a couple pitchers for Biloxi.") before or even during spring training. This is how they acquired Eric Sogard and many others over the years.

I'll give you my list of my top 50 or so at some point, but as I often say, any player that's ever had any major league success is a good minor league contract signing.

Democrats are celebrating today because they won elections where Hillary won a year ago.--Frank Luntz

Well, when you're in a losing streak, beating the worst team in the league when they miss an extra point is cause for celebration. :)

There are some troublesome indicators if you delve deep into the exit polls. I saw one gent comment that he lives in a very conservative area of VA, where Trump got 75% of the vote, Gillespie got 73%. At first glance, that appears to be fine, but the problem is, the turnout was about half.

I heard an analyst comment that Gillespie voters had a 88% positive viewpoint of Trump and a 79% positive opinion on Gillespie himself. So, weak candidate? Maybe, but those same exit polls had Gillespie voters saying the GOP Congress people were less effective than their Dem counterparts. When you vote GOP, like Trump, and supposedly like the message, to say the House and Senate Republicans are less effective seems to be a critical point. Like the message, unhappy with the messengers? Maybe.

As I have warned about, midterms historically favor the minority party, because they're more desperate. When you have what you want, it's easy to ease off the gas, turn on the cruise, and relax.

The McRib is back! Everything else is meaningless now.

When I was a much younger fella, and I had metabolism, I could get a McRib (no pickles), a fish fillet (extra tarter), large fries (ranch dipping sauce), and a chocolate shake. That was about a $8 meal back then, probably $11 now, but it was yummy and it was time for a nap afterwards.

Of course, I rarely eat carbs (well, more than 10g a day), so I won't be partaking until I take a 2-3 day stretch "off" around Thanksgiving.

I'm down about 60 pounds this year, though I was down that a while back and have bounced between my low and about 10-15 pounds heavier since AUG. The Rambling wife had to lose weight so her surgeon would do a knee replacement on her youthful self, so she lost 30 or so cutting calories and then went low carb to boost things along, and is down almost 20 more...5 more than she needed.

Dan McLaughlin at National Review one year ago tomorrow:
As long as Democrats are seeking comfort in analysts who tell them there’s zero chance of a Trump victory, screaming about “voter suppression,” and refusing to come to grips with the fact that they lost national elections fair and square in 2000 and 2004, there’s a serious chance that any Trump victory tonight would be met with rage, conspiracy-mongering and widespread refusal to accept the outcome. Trump has been irresponsible on this issue, as he often is, but other, more responsible Republicans like Marco Rubio and Pat Toomey have cautioned Republicans that the election isn’t rigged and they should accept the outcome. It would be nice if more Democrats followed their lead.
Hoo-wee did he ever get that right.--Hot Mic

I don't see many trades involving prospects either. I could be wrong, but I think Stearns is looking for a 5-7 year stretch, similar to what Doug had in that 2007-12 stretch. People forget, they contended all 6 years, and with good health and some breaks, could have easily made the playoffs 4 or 5 times in those years. Doug had no trouble trading away kids for proven talent, but I think Stearns is going to look to continue building through the pipeline.

BUMP: With protection info.

Bucks about to acquire Eric Bledsoe from Suns.

Monroe and protected 1st and 2nd round picks in 2018 are the early reports. So, if the Bucks struggle this year and do not make the playoffs, they will not be left without those picks, in theory at least. If that occurs, we'll probably see a "retool" involving the braintrust and roster.

Suns will eventually get a 1st rounder, here's a list of the protections. This makes the Bucks dealing another 1st round pick very problematic as well.

This gent predicts the Brewers end up with Brandon Phillips and Andrew Cashner, who are fits in some ways but not in others.

Phillips is a noted lefty masher, and would likely be effective in a soft platoon with Sogard, as he would probably be better getting a day off each series versus tough RHP. He's a low OBP guy however, and has been his entire career. He's always been a plus defender, but UZR and DRS have him as below average the past 2 years. However, he is pretty much just a 2B, though he has played SS/3B in his career. To me, this seems like a deadline addition and not an offseason one.

Cashner is a nice rotation piece, though much of his career success came in the noted pitcher's park of Petco, though he was very good last year in Arlington, a very offensive environment. Only 31, so he could easily get a 3 year contract. K's way down, but his velocity is still a solid 93, though down from 94 before 2016. Stearns is big on low walks, low HR's and high K's, so this does not appear to be a guy he would target...though if he's looking to add innings and production, rather than future value, he may not be looking for the same type of thing.

11/07/2017 11:58:00 AM

(11/07/2017 11:30:00 AM) - Al

EDIT/BUMP: Added first names to the 40 man additions, and positions; as many do not know those players, as people asking if Peralta is Wily Peralta...Wily will be a FA and likely a much sought after one as a bounceback candidate. He may even get a 40 man spot and a major league contract.

Also, I realized overnight that both Bandy and Vogt are out of options, so it seems very unlikely they carry both over the winter, as barring injury, they will not both be on the team. If they can't keep them both in 2018, why carry them in the offseason?

40 man roster
Locks (22)

Near Locks (8)

All but Hughes and Lopez are out of options, which means they are doubly at risk, they not only have to justify a spot on the 40, but justify a 25 man spot all season. Guerra and Jungmann are probably targets of several teams looking for a guy to add to the rotation next season. Hughes will be around, unless the Crew feels he will be too expensive in arby. Of the others, I would think Villar is he most likely to be dealt, as he would be claimed by a half dozen teams hoping for a bounce back.

On the cusp (5)

I'm sure they like Vogt, but certainly do not want to offer him arby and pay him $4Mish to hopefully start 50 games and be below average on D. I doubt it.

Drake is just vanilla enough to possibly sneak through waivers and hope to sign to a minor league contract. No options either, so if he is kept, he has to make the team and cannot go down for fresh arms. Doubt it.

Webb and Wang are both tricky. I doubt either will clear waivers, and both have options, so they would make for versatile up and down pieces. I have 1 or both staying on the 40.

Susac is a tough call as well. He's been highly thought of for several years, but showed nothing and was not healthy either. However, he does have an option. Is he better than a veteran catcher they could sign to a minor league deal? I would say probably...but not by enough to matter. Doubt it.

Locks to be added (2)
Mauricio Dubon, 2B/SS
Freddy Peralta, P

Likely to be added (2)
Jacob Nottingham, C
Marcos Diplan, P

Possible additions (2)
Nate Orf, 2B/3B/OF
Kyle Wren, OF

Both are nice minor league veterans and would be nice backups, but that's probably their ceiling, and both are "old" to be considered true prospects. I doubt either is added, and Orf is versatile enough to be taken in the Rule 5. There are probably a dozen others one could list as "possible," as they have had solid results in the minors and are eligible for the Rule 5, but I am not going to go over them.

So, assuming all the locks near locks, and likelys are on the 40, that's 34. They will leave at least 3-4 spots open for free agents (Walker/Swarzak/pitching) or claims from other teams. So I do not feel they will protect more than 35-37. That only leaves a pair of spots open for those on "the cusp." So,

One thing to keep in mind, when many folks predict this, they have the team filling up the 40, and then they say something like, "If they sign a free agent or make a 1 for 2 trade, they'll just drop Player X."

The reason that is not a sound strategy is simple...players in the minors have to be taken in the Rule 5 and then be kept in the majors all season. That's a sizable commitment. However, if you add a player like Nate Orf, and then take him off the 40 when you sign a FA, all a team has to do is put him on the 40 and pay a tiny waiver claim (I think it's $20K). Hence, when in doubt, the common thing to do is to not add a player until you have to, and hope for the best.

Nearly overwhelming praise for the Bledsoe/Monroe swap, but I immediately see issues...though nothing that can't be fixed.

1. Leaves the Bucks very thin at C. I assume this will push them to a faster, smaller lineup much of the time.

2. Leaves them with C's that are very thin...neither Henson or Maker have any bulk for rebounding and defense. Not many teams have strong, inside C's anymore, but those that do are going to keep going inside all game.

3. Bledsoe is a nice player, but is only 6-1, so he pretty much has to play the opposing point guard (or in rare cases, the smaller of the 2 guards) on defense. I've seen many references to his long arms, but he is not one to get many steals.

4. I see this as less playing time for Delly, who is just about the only Bucks' player who looks to enjoy defense. Add this to having 5's that will be pushed around, and probably simply playing small, they might just be forced to try and win games by outscoring the other team. I'm not saying that never works, but it's certainly not the standard method.

5. Team chemistry will be challenged, especially if they struggle in the next couple weeks to adjust. If they simply concentrate on winning, great. If not, could be tough as players start pointing fingers.

6. Bledsoe is signed through next season, while Monroe is a FA after the current campaign. In the NBA, flexibility is coveted. They lost some of that, and also draft picks.

Funny there's so much talk about the VA governor's race...VA is a blue state and to be blunt, should be an easy win. Hillary won by 5, Obama won by 4 and 6.

The fact that the race is even close and worth talking about (the Dem leads by 3 and is expected by most to win, he's the Lt. Gov under a popular governor) would seem to indicate that huge anti Trump vote the old media loves to chat about either doesn't exist or is not expected to vote.

I took both the Rambling wife's and my car in for an oil change, tire rotation, and to be checked out before winter, hers SAT and mine today.

Each bill was $30 and some change. For those of us who drive older vehicles because of our simple lifestyle and not wanting to cut our fun money to make a car payment every month, you realize, that's like winning the lottery. I remember last time I went to this particular shop, a couple years ago I think, I paid $600+ for new tires (they were $40 off a piece that month, I waited for the sale, who needs tread in the summer, the guy told me a couple of the old ones had metal you could see in the worst spots), new wheel bearings, and the list of "recommended service" damn near put the printer into exhaustion.

I know I'm supposed to be blindly upset about this (and everything in the world, according to one party, hence, I digress) but, I'm really not. I'm sure my wife and thousands of others were babysitting at 12. I was left home alone at 9 or 10 (albeit, in near prehistoric times).

Now, I'm sure folks will say it's different, as a week is far longer than a couple hours. While that is true...did they have plenty of food in the house? Did they have an emergency number to call if needed? If so, I can't say I'd be worried about the youngsters at all.

Heck, I know a lot of college age and young adults that can't take care of themselves for 5 minutes, per social media. I saw a 31 year old woman post she was proud of herself for making what looked like a crock pot with a roast and vegetables "without calling her mom."

Chatwood and Cobb were by far my favorite FA SP's, and it looks like Cobb is off the market.

11-2 last week, tied for 32nd out of 114.

I thought that was good, but 6 of 114 on NFL Pick Watch went 13-0.

Overall, I'm 68-51 for the season, tied for 78th out of 114.

Got my eliminator right, 5-3 overall on them, still tied for 18th of 30, 3 folks still have 0 losses.

Texans (e)--L

9-4, tied for 9th out of 114.

77-55 overall, tied for 78th of 114.

Another eliminator wrong, 5-4 on the year. Tied for 18th in my group of 30.

Notice how badly the Hillary voter always comes off in these pieces.

Contrast that with the Trump voter, who just smiles and shrugs it off. Every single time.

They spent 8 years complaining about how racist everyone was for being critical of Obama...and being unhappy.

Now, they have spent the past year complaining how racist everyone is because they didn't vote for Hillary (who is the same white woman they did not vote for in 2008)...and being unhappy.

Two consistent themes:

1. They cry racism a lot, even though I do not know any racists, and have not heard the n word spoken by a non black person in 25+ years. I've worked with dozens of blacks, Latinos, Asian Americans, and every combo of race over the years. Can't say I've ever had a problem with any of them.

2. They're always unhappy.

The former staffers also accused the former DNC interim chair of buying into "false Russian-fueled propaganda, spread by both the Russians and our opponent," claiming that Clinton's health was deteriorating during the campaign.

In her memoir, Brazile says that it was "shameful" that Clinton's campaign sought to conceal details about her health.--The Hill

They seem to forget she passed out in Manhattan and got thrown in a van like a bag of potting soil by unsurprised Secret Service agents, who were so used to her ill health that they just shrugged and took her to Chelsea's apartment instead of a hospital.

They learned their dishonesty from the best, but they are no more believable. The playbook of lie, lie, and then laugh about the truth and lie some more is well known and when it doesn't come from Hillary herself, comes off as an amateurish attempt. The lack of a lack of shame...

Some wonder why Nate Silver gets every election wrong when the Dem loses...well, it's easy...he's a hack.

Denying Hillary signed paperwork that did in fact, do what was alleged 18 months ago and the Dems wrote off as silly lies, and now that copies of it are no longer buried next to Jimmy Hoffa (NBC is said to have had a copy sent to them by someone in the Sanders campaign right after Bernie said it, which was never reported and never seen again), one has to be a complete fool to say it's BS.

Wait a you mean to say they lied about the premiums being lower and the benefits being grandiose?

I, for one, am shocked.

What's funny to me is, the projected increases on the Ryan plan were far less than what we've seen with Obamacare...but every time someone pointed that out, they were called a racist and a liar.

Why are they saying the GOP tax plan is "tax cuts for the rich" when it helps middle income people more? Because the truth hurts.

ADDED: By the way, the Rambling wife is scheduled for her 3rd surgery this year later this month and is nowhere near this deductible or max out of pocket. Not only is it $20K a year for crappy insurance, but it's $20K a year for crappy insurance hardly anyone will use.

That, my friends, is the Obama legacy.

11/04/2017 03:50:00 PM

(11/04/2017 03:12:00 PM) - Al

A wise man has said this often...pretending Trump is somehow "different" has possibly solidified the liberal the expense of pushing away the moderates, independents, and "Reagan Dems" that won the presidency for the GOP, and are the reason they control the House, the Senate, and 70% of the governor's offices.

Acting like bullies has that effect. Every time they rip on Melania, Barron, or like yesterday, Sarah Huckabee Sanders (for being womanly and not a waif, which is not only my preference, but much of the heterosexual male population); another few stuck in the middle either feel better about their vote or think seriously about switching.

Brazile thought about replacing Hillary with Biden, because she cheated and her campaign was such a disaster. Funy, Hillary wrote a huge book and never mentioned this, or paying $9M for the dossier.

The irony here is, we were all Fox News conspiracy theory nuts when we said she was ill and had not followed the rules.

Heh. The facts often turn out to be far stranger than fiction. And if the subject is Hillary, it often turns out the truth is not even close to her version of it.

MLBTR has their predictions up, and has the Brewers signing Arietta, while keeping Walker and Swarzak.

I would be happily surprised if they managed to hang onto both Neil and Anthony, and even moreso if they ended up with Jake, especially at their predicted 4y/$100M. Walker at 2y/$20M seems very low to me, at first glance.

I think they end up with Addison Reed myself, though while they have rumored to be interested in him 3-4 times over the years, some were under the Melvin regime. And yes, I still like Tyler Chatwood, as he is the youngest and hardest thrower of all the FA's.

I will also add this...if middle relievers like Cishek and Neshek end up going for $6-7M per season, I think the Crew will add one of them as well, or possibly the next tier down, like Rodney or Joe Smith.

Catchers also tend to be underpriced in my opinion. No one thinks the Brewers are even considering adding a C other than me, but I think Stearns is a believer in finding bargains, and both Lucroy and Castillo, even Avila, look inexpensive to me.

Interesting take on girls playing football with the boys.

My feeling is simple...I can't say I have a problem with it, but I recall an awful lot of my high school guy friends being awful beat up after the football season. Some delayed the start of basketball as they let their bodies heal. One had state schools like Platteville all over him, but not only was he not sure he wanted to go to college (he ended up getting a construction job right out of high school), he wondered aloud if he, as a 160 pound running back/defensive back, would simply get the living crap beat out of him.

Now imagine a 110-130 pound female. Ouch.

The MLBTR chat guys keep insisting the Brewers should sign a top FA SP, like Darvish, Tanaka, or Arietta, since they have such little money on the future payroll. Arietta has far too many red flags for me, and pitchers from Japan are overworked during their younger years to make me hesitate to give them the huge money they will end up with.

I still think Tyler Chatwood will be criminally undervalued because of his Coors Field innings. He remains my top choice, by far.

Player A--.336/.487, 823 OPS
Player B--.358/.477, 835 OPS

Player A is Justin Upton, who is signed for $116M over the next 5 seasons, his age 30-34 campaigns.

Player B is Domingo Santana, who is under team control for the next 4 years, his age 25-28 years. If I had to do a payroll estimate, I'd say those 4 years will cost about $35M ($1M, $6M, $11M, $17M).

I have been on the very contrarian position that Santana would be utilized to acquire starting pitching. Looking at these numbers, I am having doubts...but if my hunch turns out to be correct, they will get themselves a lot of talent in return, to be certain.
