Al's Ramblings

(1/31/2018 10:36:00 PM) - Al

Brewers continue to be mentioned as suitors for Darvish, who is expected to pick a team in the next few days.

Also continue to be mentioned as going after Rays' SP Chris Archer, who had the 16th most trade value per Fangraphs a year ago, because of his performance and very team friendly contract. I've seen lots of ridiculous suggestions as to what the Crew should give for Archer, but the stupidest has been Santana and a low level prospect.

A more realistic package would probably look a lot like what the Crew gave for Yelich, 3-4 young players/prospects. TB might be in rebuilding mode enough so none of their return would have to include top level pitching, and Santana could end up being a part of it, but one would think at least one top 100 player would have to be included, of which the names that would fit would be Hiura, Woodruff, Burnes, and Phillips...Ray and Ortiz were recently on the MLB list, but were not in the recent BA update...both are probably top 150 and could be considered, depending on the Rays' opinion of them.

Yelich and Quintana were both lower on that list, and both got multiple top 100's...I would assume Archer would too, though Santana's 4 years of team control, youth, and breakout 2017 campaign could arguably make him about as valuable, or close to it, as a top 100.

Bare minimum to me; Santana, one top 100, Ray or Ortiz, and another prospect, likely in the 15-25 range on the Crew's list.

A pair of ways to pay less? The Brewers could take Denard Span back in the deal, who the Rays got in Evan Longoria swap, and is well overpaid for 2018.

Another? I'll throw out Jake Odorizzi again, who I (and a few others) feel is capable of moving up a notch, much like Nelson and Anderson did in '17.

Suns buyout Greg Monroe.

Yes, I'd love to see him return to MIL.

Bucks also looking at shooters, Malik Monk being one. Still trying to find a way to get Kaminsky back in the state too.

EDIT: Monroe is not eligible to return to MIL since he was traded from them, apparently.

This is a good summary of those who wonder why the Dems insist on coming off as aloof and arrogant.

While Obama's speeches tended to be hellishly depressing, as he was obviously not a very patriotic guy, or a believer in American exceptionalism; his soundbites were often positive and funny (though dishonest, premiums $2500 less; you can keep your doc and plan if you like them).

43% of Dems and 72% of independents?

That isn't just a good speech. That may be a miracle.

1/30/2018 11:30:00 PM

(1/30/2018 10:30:00 PM) - Al

Reminded of previous scuttlebutt tonight, on reports the Brewers' braintrust never had Brinson as their top prospect.

Back after the Lucroy turned down the Tribe trade, they only had about 24 hours to swing another deal. They only got a couple serious offers, one from the Mets, one from the Rangers. Reports at the time said the Crew insisted on Conforto or another top prospect, I believe the 2B/SS Dilson. The Mets insisted Dilson was not on the market, and Conforto was a tough ask, but not impossible.

On the TEX side, Stearns was said to have preferred a pair of lower level players. They struggled to get together. Finally, the Rangers added Brinson. The Crew held back, still not excited, though admittedly, it was probably the best they were going to do. They only had a couple hours until the deadline. Stearns continued to work the phones and email. They met in the war room. All admitted TEX had the best offer. They had no luck trying to get another player, or additional player(s) added. Supposedly, the voice in the room that helped push the trade through was former GM Doug Melvin, who supposedly said something along the lines of "They stepped up and added a top prospect. Not going to do better now or in the offseason. If you don't like (Brinson), other teams will take him."

Now, it's not that Stearns and others feel Brinson sucks, but they may well have had him as a B prospect rather than an A. The one thing I always said about Lewis is that I did not like was his long swing. He'll probably always strike out a lot, and I would guess he'll always struggle versus breaking balls in the dirt. Of course, so do many major leaguers, including Bryce Harper, and they seem to have overcome it.

He'll probably always be a low BA/decent OBP/good SLG guy. Looking at Cain and Yelich, maybe they prefer plus OBP with mediocre power. Even better, of course, is high OBP and high SLG.

A supermodel that can cook and likes to watch sports is always in high demand too...

Seeing several comparisons to Reagan.

Several viewers admit they were brought to tears, some more than once.

Complete change from the previous 8..."we" and "us" said often. "I and "me" not so much.

Commentators trying to say it was a good speech, but trying to focus on "divisive" nature. Twitter comments are asking what part was divisive...the patriotic, the praise for law enforcement and the military, or the good economic news with a focus on working people keeping more of the money they earn. Being met with silence.

Choosing a barely known, not ready for prime time Kennedy to give the response? In an era of sexual harassment and plain speak, even a worse choice than it would normally be.

Standing in front of an old car? Who approved that? Everyone's first thought is exactly like this.

(1/30/2018 10:00:00 PM) - Al

This speech represents the presidential performance that Trump observers have been waiting for – brilliant mix of numbers and stories, humility and aggressiveness, traditional conservatism and political populism. Only one word qualifies: Wow.--Frank Luntz

I just might have to DVR this thing. Luntz is a pollster and is a conservative himself, but has been very negative towards Trump.

1/30/2018 10:00:00 PM

(1/30/2018 09:31:00 PM) - Al

Apparently, the president motioned to the Dem side of the aisle at one point to stand up. Many are calling this a historical presidential moment, perhaps one that has never been done before.

My question is simple? Did they stand up? Or did they ignore his gestures? I assume it was about our veterans or our military, as it would have to be something that is non controversial.

1/30/2018 09:31:00 PM

(1/30/2018 09:15:00 PM) - Al

Twitter is deafening on the Dems remaining seated for good economic news and when the president introduced heroes (I assume law enforcement/military, but was not watching).

Many are wondering who exactly they thought would find that to be a good idea. The response from others was "their base." However, it does not make moderates, independents, and Trump Democrats want to join them.

Polltaker Frank Lunz said the SOTU will give Trump's approval a bump, as he did not mention a single controversial thing, and basically preached to the choir on only safe, bipartisan issues. He even asked who was advising the Dems, as they looked unhappy and upset at good economic news, lower taxes, cash bonuses, and even the national anthem.

(1/30/2018 08:48:00 PM) - Al

From the net...

--Most still consider the Cubs to be the favorite to sign Darvish.

--Many think Darvish would prefer the Dodgers, but they have given no indication of making a market value contract offer, as it would put them over the luxury tax.

--Darvish is said to be more interested in MIL since they signed Cain and acquired Yelich. Brewers have informed him they are not done, are looking to add a couple players in addition to Yu himself.

1/30/2018 08:48:00 PM

(1/30/2018 08:06:00 PM) - Al

Brewers continue having their ear to the ground, talking to Darvish; would love to land Archer. The thought of ending up with both, while unlikely, would not be a bad thing.

May have even discussed other top SP's today, possibly Stroman.

1/30/2018 08:06:00 PM

(1/30/2018 07:21:00 PM) - Al

For those curious, as of this second, the Crew have 16 players under contract for almost exactly $85M. This includes Gallardo, who is signed to a non guaranteed deal.

Even if they went near minimum on the 9 remaining, they'd end up at about $90M.

1/30/2018 07:21:00 PM

(1/30/2018 07:01:00 PM) - Al

I think the bases loaded would be a better idea, because the teams would be more likely to score a differing amount of runs. On 2B, the math says both teams will score 0 or 1, making a tie likely.

1/30/2018 07:01:00 PM

(1/30/2018 06:39:00 PM) - Al

Brewers continue to talk to pitchers, starters and relievers.

I was just thinking a day or two ago, it's been so long since we heard about a 2B, it's almost guaranteed that's what we'll hear about first.

2017 was the best year for conservatives in the 30 years that I’ve been here. The best year. On all fronts. And a lot of people are shocked. Because we didn’t know what we were getting with Donald Trump. He was doing fundraisers for Chuck Schumer three or four years ago. But this has turned out to be a very solid, conservative, right of center, pro-business administration. And we’re seeing the results of it.--Mitch McConnell

This is why the left keeps bringing up Russia and the end of the world as we know it. They hate prosperity.

The ones trying to do the framing are the ones who keep getting caught.

I have said this before, but the constant argument I keep hearing is "Trump was wrong when he said he was wiretapped." When someone points out it certainly appears someone on the left planted bugs or somehow listened in on the Trump campaign; the immediate reply of "That's not a wiretap though," not only seems rather weak, a more hypocritical response might be impossible to achieve if you attempted it for months.

It would not surprise me at all if, in my lifetime, MLB asks the Brewers to reconsider their nickname because of alcohol abuse and its direct correlation with such things as impaired driving and spousal abuse.

Thoughts on Matt Albers.

Reminds me a lot of Jared Hughes, sinker slider type, very consistent, has only had one bad season (2016) since 2012.

In fact, signed for almost identical money as Hughes, making Jared's nontender even more puzzling.

"Normal" splits guy, slightly better versus RH hitters.

Albers was rumored to have reached an agreement about 6 weeks ago. May have been a handshake deal with the Crew (possibly waiting to clear a 40 man spot via trade?) or another team that ended up falling through.

Speaking of a 40 man spot, there is not one open. Taking a look at those players out of options, I'd guess Drake or Bandy; or Susac, who has one, but may be the most likely to clear waivers. They do not need to clear a spot until he passes a physical, so time will tell how soon that is.

Several comments online that Counsell and Stearns know more than they are letting on, very vague answers, never mentioned anyone by name except Cain, Yelich, and Braun.

Cain will play CF.

Yelich can expect to play some CF. His primary position is not known yet, Counsell says he has 9 weeks to figure that out. I assume they want to talk to Braun, and, of course, ensure it is Braun sharing the OF with them. And yes, Braun may play some 1B, and is open to doing so.

Very little mention of Cain and Yelich being above average defenders. While we do not know the configuration yet, it is probably safe to say the new OF will be 10-15 runs better than last season.

(1/25/2018 09:09:00 PM) - Al

Speculation seems to be centered on Santana (and others) to TB for Archer; or Santana to CLE for Salazar.

Quieter talk about Odorizzi (mostly by me, but also a couple other bargain hunters), and some whispers of Duffy/Merrifield from the Royals.

Other than constant Giants' fans interest, not seeing a single NL team talked about.

1/25/2018 09:09:00 PM

(1/25/2018 08:56:00 PM) - Al

MLB Radio is reporting all Santana talk on the Brewers' end is chatting with the Rays...seeing if they can work out a Chris Archer trade.

If not, they will begin to talk about other SP's.

Not for long, but OF depth is not a problem.

(1/25/2018 08:28:00 PM) - Al

Hearing the loudest suitors for Santana thus far are the Tribe and Rays.

Could my prediction from 3 weeks ago actually come to pass? Archer is worth far more than Santana...but Odorizzi is worth less, only 2 years of team control versus 4.

Odorizzi and a prospect?

(1/25/2018 07:28:00 PM) - Al

Yesterday, Santana to CLE for Salazar and Kipnis was rumored to be on the list of possibilities IF they signed Cain and traded for Yelich.

Suddenly, it would appear to be a real possibility.

1/25/2018 07:28:00 PM

(1/25/2018 07:21:00 PM) - Al

A bit surprised about Phillips, but not especially.

1/25/2018 07:21:00 PM

(1/25/2018 06:30:00 PM) - Al

BREAKING: Cain signs with MIL, 5y/$80M.

---Be interesting to see if Cain or Yelich plays CF. If Cain does, that may indicate Braun headed back to RF, unless Yelich has a better arm than I think he does. Domingo will not be coming to On Deck Sunday, because he knows he's gone. That's my opinion, not official.

---As of this moment, I would say Broxton is the 4th OF, with an occasional start in CF against a tough LHP, and to spell Braun and Cain, who certainly are not 150 games a year players. Phillips might bounce up and down all season, come up for injuries, for interleague series, and so on.

---Phillips just tweeted out a thinking face. He is probably the only unhappy person, along with Broxton. As I said, Domingo probably knows he's on the way out, for a return about 2/3rd's of Yelich, due to defense and the uncertainty of arby.

--Cain passes physical, will be introduced Friday at presser.

--Yelich has a 31 score on the Fan Scouting Report at Fangraphs for arm strength and a 54 on accuracy. For comparison, Braun gets a 60/50, so I do not see Yelich playing RF (FYI, Cain gets a 55/59, so his arm is not Phillips like strength wise either) everyday.

1/25/2018 06:30:00 PM

(1/25/2018 05:41:00 PM) - Al

Brewers acquire Yelich for pretty close to what I expected.

Brinson
Diaz
Harrison (slightly lower rated than Woodruff/Burnes)
Yamamoto (similar to Pennington/Bickford)

--Rosenthal says Crew is still trying to land Cain, most feel to then deal Santana.

ADDED: Obviously, if they add Cain, that would mean at least one more move would follow.

--Stearns says they have been talking to Marlins about Yelich since offseason began.

--Stearns says goal remains the same, to improve the team and make the playoffs.

--Yelich saying all the right things, has no problem playing any OF spot. Will try and make On Deck event Sunday. Thrilled to be in MIL. Glad the trade talk is finally over.

--He was a Gold Glove LF and almost exactly average in CF (though he might improve playing there every day). Not sure if he has the arm for RF.

--Many commenting that while Brewers gave up 3 top prospects for Yelich, surprised no high level pitching was involved...MIL kept Woodruff, Burnes, and Lopez.

I believe the term is "follow the money."

They care a great deal about taking money from those who earned it, and getting as much of it back as possible.

1/25/2018 10:00:00 AM

(1/25/2018 08:28:00 AM) - Al

Seeing lots of momentum that Arcia would be part of a Yelich package, perhaps with Starlin Castro coming back.

Arcia plays the 2nd most valuable spot in the field and is younger than Yelich. That would be a huge price to pay, though the Crew does have several SS options* in the majors and minors (Villar/Sogard/Dubon/Diaz).

Is there anything to it? Often, once a player's name is tied to a deal, they will continue to be, just out of repetition.

*And yes, they have even more CF depth than they do SS depth.

1/25/2018 08:28:00 AM

(1/25/2018 08:00:00 AM) - Al

Hence, it's working perfectly then.

Government healthcare is not about healthcare, it's about convincing the rubes to go all in, taxes for control.

1/25/2018 08:00:00 AM

(1/25/2018 07:32:00 AM) - Al

People keep asking for names in a potential Yelich swap, instead of just a "3 top 100's and maybe one other prospect" recap.

Brinson
Hiura or Diaz
Woodruff or Burnes (more likely to be Burnes, as Woodruff is probably penciled into the 2018 rotation)
Bickford or Pennington

That would be my best guess. And yes, that's a ton of talent. Proven players in their prime tied up for 5 years on team friendly contracts have oodles of value.

This is just like Chris Archer versus a FA pitcher.

Do I prefer Archer (Yelich) to Arietta/Darvish (Cain)?

Yes.

Do I prefer a FA and keeping all the prospects, either for the future or for another trade?

Yes.

Extended thread about the desperate lengths they went to, trying to frame Flynn, Trump, and others.

1/24/2018 12:59:00 PM

(1/24/2018 12:48:00 PM) - Al

From the internet today.

---Crew has offer on the table for Yelich. Stearns and braintrust confident. It is a true offer believed to be final. Marlins have told other teams they have an offer to beat, believed to be Brewers.

---Previous prediction of 3 top 100 players remains in play. May be lesser players involved too.

---No one seems to know if it is just Yelich or not.

---Brewers have other scenarios waiting to go, whether yes or no. Cain might well be option in both cases.

---Many reports suggest overwhelming interest in Santana in last 24 hours. Teams asking about Phillips, Brinson, Harrison as well.

---Indians keep coming up, as they have SP to trade, as well as Kipnis.

---Darvish believed to be deciding soon. Many still say he will go to Cubs, but agents still negotiating with others.

The guy who did this survey has not spent much time noticing what 16-18 year old girls look like today.

We have a pair of floor lamps in the living room. They are just a black pole with a bulb at the top, with a white plastic thing under the bulb. Last night, the Rambling wife had the Rambling son reach something under the sofa, and he leaned the lamp over. When we set it back up, a crack in the brittle plastic broke from 20+ years of being inches from the bulb heat, leaving a 2 quarter size hole. Ordered new lamps from Wal Mart...$8 each.

Only 20 years of service from an $8 item...they just don't make stuff like they used to. :)

Could the Crew be interested in both Cain and Yelich?

That would defeat the narrative we've seen so far, but it would also leave Santana to be part of a trade.

One other thought...if they are considering trading a package of 3-4 good prospects or team controlled young players, could they be weighing Archer versus Yelich? Is that how this got started, MIA heard the Brewers offered several kids for Archer and asked if they wanted Yelich?

Bucks are caught in the middle...they have a good young team, with pieces such as Thon Maker, who will be much better some day than they are now.

They are near the bottom of the league in rebounding, defense in the paint, and 3 point percentage and shots made.

They do have the ability to simply outscore and outshoot their opponents.

They are also a team pushing the salary cap ceiling. Help will not be as easy as adding talent in the offseason.

I must admit, hearing they fired their coach and haven't bothered telling him yet...makes me recall the leaderless days of the Dean Taylor era, when he had clods like Davey Lopes and Dave Stewart telling him they needed to blow out young arms and needed a speedy 2B to lead off while future all stars Ron Belliard and Mark Loretta sat on the bench...they no run fast enough.

I know the team is entering an easier part of the schedule. I am comforted knowing ESPN says the Bucks' job will be the most coveted of the offseason, with Giannis, a talented nucleus, and a new arena opening.

But not being able to do even the simplest things properly is painful.

Lewis Brinson (18), Keston Hiura (47), Brandon Woodruff (61), Corbin Burnes (74), Monte Harrison (75), Brett Phillips (80)

(1/19/2018 09:45:00 PM) - Al

Well, to be fair, Bernie is a complete idiot.

1/19/2018 09:45:00 PM

(1/19/2018 09:41:00 PM) - Al

If the Dems are watching social media, people are furious about the military not getting paid, and completely apathetic about the rest of the government shutdown.

Best line?

The government might shut down Friday...just like it does every weekend.

I do wonder why the military was included...if it's a strategy, it seems shortsighted. If it's because they know the military votes 80% Republican; it seems very shortsighted.

1/19/2018 09:41:00 PM

(1/19/2018 08:56:00 PM) - Al

It's almost as if the old media is completely out of touch.

1/19/2018 08:56:00 PM

(1/19/2018 06:42:00 PM) - Al

Wait until that next contract has to be negotiated.

Get woke, go broke.

1/19/2018 06:42:00 PM

(1/19/2018 03:37:00 PM) - Al

Well, to be fair, they don't really believe in anything.

1/19/2018 03:37:00 PM

(1/19/2018 02:26:00 PM) - Al

Patriots opened as a 9 point favorite, now down to 7 or 7.5, depending on the sportsbook. Most feel it is because of the Brady hand injury...or possible injury.

1/19/2018 02:26:00 PM

(1/19/2018 02:16:00 PM) - Al

Crew invites Wren and Orf to spring training, which would seem to be a way of letting them know they are still thought of as 25 man roster possibilities.

1/19/2018 02:16:00 PM

(1/19/2018 01:59:00 PM) - Al

Crew linked to Cobb, Lynn, and Nunez.

1/19/2018 01:59:00 PM

(1/19/2018 01:08:00 PM) - Al

This is pretty much how I feel too, other than the military heroes not being paid.

1/19/2018 01:08:00 PM

(1/19/2018 01:01:00 PM) - Al

Heh.

They think we are incredibly stupid.

1/19/2018 01:01:00 PM

(1/19/2018 12:57:00 PM) - Al

I have a cold heart and do not impress easily, but I must admit, this is genius.

1/19/2018 12:57:00 PM

(1/19/2018 12:00:00 PM) - Al

Top 20 prospects. ("seasonal" age as of July 1, 2018)
1. Lewis Brinson, 24, CF
--Best by far. Mike Cameron is a good comp.
2. Keston Hiura, 22, 2B
--Al he does is hit. Potential to be an all star if he can stay at 2B, solid player at 1B or LF.
3. Corbin Burnes, 23, SP
--Can't ignore video game like numbers last year. Just toyed with A+/AA hitters.
4. Brandon Woodruff, 25, SP
--Solid debut last year, was almost as good as Burnes in '16.
5. Brett Phillips, 24, CF
--Many gave up on him after a poor '16. Still plenty young.
6. Corey Ray, 23, CF
--His floor is so high, tough to put him lower than this.
7. Luis Ortiz, 22, SP
--Very young, so even though he had a pedestrian year in AA, very solid.
8. Isan Diaz, 22, 2B/SS
--Has a good eye and pop for a middle infielder.
9. Mauricio Dubon, 23, 2B/SS
--Very athletic and getting better every year.
10. Freddy Peralta, 22, P
--Set to explode, excellent velocity, misses bats.
11. Adrian Houser, 24, SP
--Many have forgotten about him. I have not. Still a true prospect.
12. Monte Harrison, 22, CF
--Arrived on the scene after a struggle, fantastic athlete, will have ups and downs.
13. Jacob Nottingham, 23, C
--Overlooked, catchers always develop slowly. Plenty of time.
14. Taylor Williams, 26, RP
--Ceiling probably a reliever now, but he will be good if healthy.
15. Trent Grisham (formerly Trent Clark), 21, CF
--Fine athlete, walks a lot.
16. Lucas Erceg, 23, 3B
--I think he's a bit overrated, but lefty bat with huge power.
17. Troy Stokes, 22, OF
--Overlooked due to lack of stature (5-8), but has good speed and power. Outperformed Ray and Grisham in '16.
18. Aaron Wilkerson, 29, SP
--Tough to put a fella almost 30 on the list. Never gonna going to be a star, but he gets guys out.
19. Tristen Lutz, 19, OF
--Very young, but raw power off the charts.
20. KJ Harrison, 21, C/1B
--Doubt if he sticks as a C, might end up as a utility guy solely due to bat.

(1/19/2018 10:30:00 AM) - Al

I would say they do not lean any further right than CNN and the networks lean left.

1/19/2018 10:30:00 AM

(1/19/2018 09:00:00 AM) - Al

My top 20 prospects might just appear right around noon today.

Might.

1/19/2018 09:00:00 AM

(1/19/2018 06:30:00 AM) - Al

Unexpectedly.

1/19/2018 06:30:00 AM

(1/19/2018 04:30:00 AM) - Al

They could not be more transparent.

1/19/2018 04:30:00 AM

(1/19/2018 03:00:00 AM) - Al

It's almost as if the old media just covers what they want and ignores the rest.

Of course, the dude was here for decades and never did a thing as far as starting the path to citizenship, and supposedly used a fictional social security number all these years.

I may have a cold heart, but, that's a damn shame.

1/19/2018 03:00:00 AM

(1/19/2018 01:43:00 AM) - Al

Many wondering as I am...what is in this memo that could be more damaging than what we know?

Only guess I have? Some never Trump folks were involved in payment or making up info, as it has been shown to be, at best, factually inaccurate.

McCain bringing a copy in was strange at best, though meaningless, as others had been seen before. Could that be part of it?

1/19/2018 01:43:00 AM

(1/19/2018 01:00:00 AM) - Al

This is why the left fought it so.

They knew it would work, and knew it would be popular.

Thursday, January 18, 2018

(1/18/2018 09:03:00 PM) - Al

I'm beginning to think this isn't an exaggeration, because not a single Dem has said a word about this being stupid or a waste of time like Hillary keeps insisting whenever someone brings up her lies and classified emails.

{You see, she thought the C stood for Clinton.}

1/18/2018 09:03:00 PM

(1/18/2018 08:52:00 PM) - Al

The Dems will not allow a "military exemption" like there always is?

That's as pathetic as claiming a tax cut will hurt people.

1/18/2018 08:52:00 PM

(1/18/2018 08:49:00 PM) - Al

Excuse me...but how unAmerican is it to waste law enforcement's time?

What a bunch of terrible people.

1/18/2018 08:49:00 PM

(1/18/2018 08:31:00 PM) - Al

Surprised to see Hayes in the NBA. I just did not see him as that type of player. Good for him.

1/18/2018 08:31:00 PM

(1/18/2018 07:35:00 PM) - Al

Wang might be headed over to South Korea to play.

1/18/2018 07:35:00 PM

(1/18/2018 06:28:00 PM) - Al

It's dead, but many will ignore that fact and keep feeding the rotting corpse to the rubes, who don't know any better, as long as they refer to it by another term, like "dommon dore."

1/18/2018 06:28:00 PM

(1/18/2018 06:22:00 PM) - Al

I have no doubt.

What we know so far is extremely damning...Hillary and others paid for a fake dossier, which was then used to obtain a FISA warrant, which was then used to listen in on a candidate for president.

That's spy novel worthy deceit, and unacceptable. Thus far, the biggest issue seems to be the left arguing what a "wiretap" is for legal purposes, but in private at least, have no issue admitting they eavesdropped on Trump and his people for political purposes.

Why the continued focus on "Russia" you ask? Read the above couple paragraphs and you'll quickly understand why the diversionary tactics.

1/18/2018 06:22:00 PM

(1/18/2018 03:30:00 PM) - Al

What did they have to lose?

Turns out, nothing.

1/18/2018 03:30:00 PM

(1/18/2018 02:00:00 PM) - Al

He lived in a bizarro world.

1/18/2018 02:00:00 PM

(1/18/2018 01:22:00 PM) - Al

Been resting most of yesterday and today, for the 2nd time in 3 weeks, have the Rambling son's terrible cold. Posts are mostly previously scheduled links.

Tomorrow, my top 20 or 25 prospects will appear, as list is done, but I want to say a blurb about each.

Enjoy the warmth, we have 5 days of 32+ forecast. Many years, we have a week or two it never gets above zero.

1/18/2018 01:22:00 PM

(1/18/2018 12:30:00 PM) - Al

Yep.

This continues to remind me of Governor Walker, who was the worst person to ever exist until he wasn't.

1/18/2018 12:30:00 PM

(1/18/2018 11:30:00 AM) - Al

Good.

The Rambling wife married at 22, but you would have too if you would have met me.

1/18/2018 11:30:00 AM

(1/18/2018 10:00:00 AM) - Al

Consistency is not their strength.

1/18/2018 10:00:00 AM

(1/18/2018 09:00:00 AM) - Al

On CNN, no less.

All is proceeding as Scott Adams predicted.

1/18/2018 09:00:00 AM

(1/18/2018 08:00:00 AM) - Al

I, for one, am shocked.

$11B total...and it's nowhere near finished. Wait until it loses money every year...

1/18/2018 08:00:00 AM

(1/18/2018 06:30:00 AM) - Al

It's almost as if not being Neville Chamberlain wimpy is a positive.

1/18/2018 06:30:00 AM

(1/18/2018 03:00:00 AM) - Al

And I laughed and laughed and laughed.

1/18/2018 03:00:00 AM

(1/18/2018 12:30:00 AM) - Al

Now I know why the left hated it so.

(1/17/2018 07:28:00 PM) - Al

This is why Flake was in 3rd in his primary, behind his main opponent and undecided.

Usually, attention whores have a better grasp of not saying something so incessantly stupid.

1/17/2018 07:28:00 PM

(1/17/2018 06:22:00 PM) - Al

The thing is, if Aziz is guilty of anything, so is just about every single guy.

1/17/2018 06:22:00 PM

(1/17/2018 07:55:00 AM) - Al

Fairbanks is supposed to hit 32 today.

May want to hold off on packing your bags, as the forecast high a week from today is -20.

1/17/2018 07:55:00 AM

(1/17/2018 04:00:00 AM) - Al

Like most bullies, he's a crybaby if stood up to.

1/17/2018 04:00:00 AM

(1/17/2018 02:30:00 AM) - Al

If it looks like a coup and seems like a coup...it's probably a coup.

Imagine, if you will, the GOP openly talking about forcing Obama out of office because, wait for it...they did not like the fact his policies were successful.

1/17/2018 02:30:00 AM

(1/17/2018 12:30:00 AM) - Al

2-3 packs a day, and maybe he'd be a god.

Churches need to do more marketing of every kind, but I'd say this will be effective.

1/16/2018 08:16:00 PM

(1/16/2018 07:31:00 PM) - Al

Whenever you begin to focus on anything except winning, your performance suffers.

1/16/2018 07:31:00 PM

(1/16/2018 07:01:00 PM) - Al

Heh.

This seems to be the strategery.

They do seem to be infected

1/16/2018 07:01:00 PM

(1/16/2018 02:13:00 PM) - Al

The rubes aren't nearly as stupid as the elites think they are.

1/16/2018 02:13:00 PM

(1/16/2018 01:38:00 PM) - Al

Harrison asks out of Pittsburgh, though he does it politely.

1/16/2018 01:38:00 PM

(1/16/2018 09:30:00 AM) - Al

On the marquee sign outside of Family Video today:

My Little Pony Hitman's Bodyguard

You know, when he pulled the AK47 out from under his blanket and shot the stable boy 22 times in the face...I sure didn't see that coming. Love those plot twists!

Reminds me of the time Culver's sign said:

Tuna Salad Chocolate Marshmallow

Who the hell came up with that flavor?

1/16/2018 09:30:00 AM

(1/16/2018 06:00:00 AM) - Al

Apparently, I'm not the only one who has noted what a bunch of negative nellies the Dems are.

That said, with luck, they will keep this up FOREVER.

Nothing is more effective than "you rubes are terrible, come join us."

1/16/2018 06:00:00 AM

(1/16/2018 03:00:00 AM) - Al

Heh. I know the feeling.

1/16/2018 03:00:00 AM

(1/16/2018 01:00:00 AM) - Al

Imagine how vicious the attacks would be if she ever announced.

Monday, January 15, 2018

(1/15/2018 06:00:00 PM) - Al

This would seem to get in the way of that narrative they keep feeding us.

1/15/2018 06:00:00 PM

(1/15/2018 05:46:00 PM) - Al

Bucks sign Marshall Plumlee to a 2 way deal. Today was the deadline to do so.

He's a 7 footer with some inside skills. Can't tell much from his limited time last year.

1/15/2018 05:46:00 PM

(1/15/2018 04:42:00 PM) - Al

I must be the only one who thinks the Pirates are getting what their veteran players are worth.

Guys with 1-2 very expensive years left on their contracts simply very limited in their worth, as only a few teams can afford them, not all those teams want them; and often, they are teams with below average farm systems.

That's another reason I like Harrison, in addition to his versatility and athleticism, as he's signed for 3 seasons (even better, he's signed for 1 year with a pair of options, if he is left with a career ending injury, the risk is minimal). 486 games of Harrison is probably more valuable than 162 games of McCutchen.

1/15/2018 04:42:00 PM

(1/15/2018 04:27:00 PM) - Al

Brewers are "in" on just about any player they see as having value, such as a free agent that might end up being underpaid.

Imagine you know a guy who raises heifer calves until they are springers. If he sees a bull calf selling for $50 that he feels is worth $100, that makes sense.

1/15/2018 04:27:00 PM

(1/15/2018 04:15:00 PM) - Al

Stearns is way ahead of me, as always.

I doubt if PIT will mind dealing him to a division rival if they have decided to reset.

1/15/2018 04:15:00 PM

(1/15/2018 04:00:00 PM) - Al

It is. They need to do a better job bragging about it. They did not go from 8 years of stagnation to incredible growth coincidentally. It has been one economic spark after another.

And, the attention whores like Flake need to shut up. When you know you have no chance to win your primary, you lose the right to speak for the party.

1/15/2018 04:00:00 PM

(1/15/2018 03:36:00 PM) - Al

McCutchen to the Giants.

Stearns should call about Josh Harrison, as it appears the Bucs have admitted they are in need of a rebuild.

1/15/2018 03:36:00 PM

(1/15/2018 03:30:00 PM) - Al

Remember, they laughed at Sarah Palin when she said we should drill our way to lower oil prices.

Guess what we've done?

Those that refuse to admit supply and demand works are doomed to not understand economics.

1/15/2018 03:30:00 PM

(1/15/2018 01:30:00 PM) - Al

Larry Summers should have said 100 billion.

It's still a lie, but I ain't going to even pretend to give a damn over 10K mythical people.

1/15/2018 01:30:00 PM

(1/15/2018 12:00:00 PM) - Al

Takeaways from this article.

The notebook idea is really stupid.

The author of the piece is irritating as all hell.

When you're finishing an application you've known about for a long time on the day it is due, you have no chance of being anything but a blithering idiot.

In some sort of unheard of scheduling quirk, the Wild, TWolves, and Vikings were all playing at home today.

Reactions here.

The Rambling wife says not only do most folks wear Packers' jerseys on playoff Sundays to her church, but the pastor always says a prayer...not just for good health and the like, but to include a Packers' victory.

It's always a very loud "Amen."

1/14/2018 09:48:00 PM

(1/14/2018 09:30:00 PM) - Al

Choi is another very good minor league signing. Brewers have focused on getting some of the top players available since Stearns arrived.

Reports online say Choi turned down a 40 man spot from the Rays to sign with MIL, so I assume the Brewers' offer has an opt out, allowing him to become a FA at some point if not in the majors.

1/14/2018 09:30:00 PM

(1/14/2018 09:08:00 PM) - Al

The stock market has gained an incredible 7.8 Trillion dollars in market value since POTUS was elected! Looks like 4% economic growth in 4th quarter, lowest level of claims for unemployment benefits in 44 years, and black unemployment rate is the lowest (6.8%) on record! MAGA!--Lou Dobbs

The truth is, we may never recover.

Pencils in full color.

Watching all the steps, it's hard to believe they don't cost $5 each. I still like to use pencils, and considering how tough it is to find a decent at home sharpener (I bought a $20 one on clearance at my old arts and crafts store for less than $5, and it worked good for about 90 seconds), I was thrilled to find a dozen pre sharpened ones on WalMart.com for $2 a while back. Now, the difficulty is digging them out of the sofa.

To be fair, that was before they found out Trump was for it.

(1/13/2018 10:30:00 PM) - Al

Me neither.

W was called every name in the book for 8 years. McCain and Romney, two of the most honorable men to exist in the 21st century, were called Hitler and worse.

Pardon me if I do not have an ounce of sympathy for the left suddenly having a case of the vapors at the president calling a sh*thole a sh*thole.

1/13/2018 10:30:00 PM

(1/13/2018 05:43:00 PM) - Al

Geritt Cole traded to the Astros.

And this time, I mean it.

4 for 1. Musgrove and Moran biggest names.

1/13/2018 05:43:00 PM

(1/13/2018 04:58:00 PM) - Al

Need to be tougher...talk to them I mean...

It's easy to change your mind when you don't really believe in anything.

Of course, note all the suggestions after 8 years of pretending foreign policy did not exist from the Obama braintrust (it was a video, I tell ya; how 'bout we send ya a pallet of cash).

To be truthful, relations with the fat boy (said as a fellow fat boy) are probably as good as they have been in a decade. North Korea wants to participate in the Olympics, and they have been informed to be good boys in order to do so. They voluntary renewed contact with South Korea on their "hotline" in case of accidental launch or, I suppose, in case they just want to shoot the breeze on why the north shuts off the electricity at night.

1/13/2018 04:58:00 PM

A wise man has been saying this for over a year now.

It helped him immensely before the election too. It drove the unsure and halfhearted to the voting booth. Luckily, the late night operatives are too ignorant to realize what they're doing.

I have compared this to Governor Walker's treatment many, many times, and it continues to ring true. Walker has, step by step, made WI the envy of many purple states. The growth from a state full of old fashioned business (agriculture, lumber, paper, cheese) is unheard of.

While he keeps adding to the state's rainy day fund, the previous administration stole from the transportation fund just to meet the budget.

Addison Reed to sign with Twins, 2y/$17M.

As a fan of low risk, short term deals, tough not to like this for the Twins, though they obviously overpaid , paying $8.5M for 70 innings.

Heh.

Quite a quandary.

I have to admit, this is a lot like crying wolf to me. Being offended by "everything" is eventually going to lead to the public ignoring it...if it hasn't already.

A better question might be why they criticize successful churches.

The answer to both are the same, really. Envy. They are jealous of those starting out because they know they have high hopes and big dreams. They are jealous of the successful ones because they have accomplished so much.

I worked for a district manager who told us to "give away the store" to avoid a complaint to corporate. His reasoning was, they would not back us up anyway, so just avoid the trouble.

Some struggled with this, and his answer was always the same, "What part of give away the store don't you understand?"

So, I guess I would have done this refund as well, with those rules in place.

Sam's Club closing 63 stores, some never opened this morning. 4 in WI, all in the Madison/Milwaukee area.

Always feel bad when folks go to work and find the doors locked. I was promoted out of a Toys R Us a year before it closed, and the party store I ran closed about 6 months after I saw the writing on the wall and went to a solvent retailer. I heard all about the tears and rough times.

I've always heard the margin at those warehouse clubs are very tiny, as their profits almost match their annual fees paid in to the dollar.

We only have a card because the Rambling in laws get X amount of cards with their business membership and gave the Rambling wife one years ago. We rarely shop there, except to buy big bags of chicken breasts.

(1/10/2018 10:48:00 PM) - Al

The Bucks are expecting to have Jabari Parker back before the All-Star break, according to Matt Velazquez of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Coach Jason Kidd was optimistic tonight in his assessment of Parker, who hasn’t played this season because of a torn left ACL.

“He’s doing great,” Kidd said. “Again, he’s doing everything; he’s practicing, he’s participating with the [G League Wisconsin] Herd. So, he’s getting a lot of basketball under his belt. Again, I think we’re about a month away from having him back.”

Parker is still recovering after suffering the injury last February. At the time, he was projected to be sidelined for about a year, and it looks like that prognosis will be accurate. Parker has shown flashes of brilliance in his three-year career, but has been limited by injuries. He averaged 20.1 points and 6.2 rebounds in 25 games last season.--Hoops Rumors

I had no idea Parker was due back so soon. He's an awful defender, but they can certainly use his scoring punch. That might be one reason Kidd has been pushing Giannis and Khris so hard, knowing he can lower their minutes soon.

I believe the Bucks can take O'Quinn without sending out salary.

Crew signs JJ Hoover to a minor league contract.

Hoover is a hard thrower who has struggled with the long ball and big innings in the past. He's plenty capable of going multiple innings as well, and about equally effective versus both lefties ands righties.

Stearns continues to build his bullpen on a budget, which as I have pointed out on several occasions, is the exact blueprint the Astros used until they felt they were solid contenders.

1/10/2018 12:39:00 PM

(1/10/2018 01:00:00 AM) - Al

Funny, I don't recall this being part of the end of the world as we know it the Dems were insisting would happen with the tax cut.

Badgers lose another road battle, this time at Nebraska.

Even a split of the last 2 games, the prior being versus another lower echelon team, Rutgers, would have been a nice start to what certainly appears to be a rebuilding campaign.

I've seen a lot of teams like them over the years; always young, seemingly always just a couple turnovers or missed shots away.

I think the goofy President Trump hides in the same place as the evil Governor Walker.

In reality, both are despised by the left for three reasons:

Opening lines

Steelers 6.5 Jags
Pats 13.5 Titans

There's gotta be a way to make a Jabari Parker package match up.

The Bucks will be $5.1M below the luxury tax once DeAndre Liggins is waived on Sunday. Milwaukee will have a $757,427 cap hit on the Liggins waiver and 14 guaranteed contracts. Milwaukee still has a $5M and $3.4M trade exception available.--Bobby Marks

Liggins was a vital piece of the rotation the first month or so, but has lost time since. I'm sure they're looking to fill that spot (as well as Vaughn's spot) and strengthen the depth/rotation.

I finished the 2017 NFL season at 167-89, 65.2% correct, good for a 36th place tie at NFL Pickwatch, of 114 tracked. Jeff Ratcliffe of Pro Football Focus led the way with 180 right.

I was 46-45 (51%) after week 7, and then finished the season 121-44 (73%). Those last 10 weeks went a lot more to plan.

11-6 in my eliminator contests. No one in my group of 30 went undefeated for the campaign, and I came in tied for 16th of 30.

This week, I got:

Chiefs
Falcons
Jags
Saints

Even the Packers were down 9%. They fell for it and it will probably take years to get all those viewers back.

I've seen lots of people predicting the playoffs and Super Bowl will be a bit of a bounce back, as many more casual fans tune in, and it's more of a happening rather than a game. However, there's two ways of looking at it...I know many Packers' fans that would delay a trip to the ER or not go to a important event like a wedding or a funeral if it conflicted with a game. There are very few general NFL fans of that dedication level. So, it's quite possible they'll be down more.

Time will tell.

Turns out, the best way to lower black unemployment is...wait for it...lower unemployment.

Being color blind tends to be the best way to go in many, many things. Not treating folks of different gender, religion, ethnic background differently "just because" is a trend that will gain momentum over time.

The women who took part in that pro abortion march are so silent, it almost makes one wonder if they could be any more transparent.

My cold heart does not allow me to pass up a single opportunity not to mention this.

The irony? Krugman watched 8 Obama years lacking in growth (slowest EVER mind you), and then insisted it'd get worse under a businessman.

Talk about being out of touch.

It should be free, and all the taxpayers should pay for it!

Even thew Times' readers note the hypocrisy, and allow me to say how stupid it would be that most of the people even in New York City would pay for it yet never spend a minute there.

There's only two things to be certain of:

1. Trump is as stupid as Reagan.

2. Judging by early results, just as lucky too.

There's only 2 things the left is sure of:

1. We need bigger government to save the rubes from themselves.

2. Why do the rubes not realize this?

Barbato seems like a Barnes clone, and is only 24. A 94 mph fastball and a 87 mph slider is a fine place to begin.

True.

Also true.

Note yet another comparison to Reagan. The more this occurs, the worse it is for the left. Not only was Reagan beloved then, it has grown exponentially over time; history has been extremely kind to him, especially his national defense and economic policies.

Reagan was always made fun of as being a lazy lightweight with stupid, simple ideas. And, wait for it, they worked.

Quick...who does that remind you of?

Rasmussen has him between 44 and 46, also the highest in quite some time.

So far, this would seem to be an early example that the tax cuts, strong economy, and all around tough talk seem to be going over pretty well so far.

Irony alert...could the Brewers sign Cain and then use OF surplus to trade for Odorizzi...after reacquiring Jeffress (again) last season?

1/04/2018 02:31:00 PM

(1/04/2018 01:10:00 PM) - Al

Brewers paired up with Cobb, Lynn, and Cain today.

Tomorrow, maybe we'll see them look at 5 letter possibilities.

:):)

EDIT: TEX and MIL both going after Cain "very hard" per reports.

The thing is, the pursuit of Cain has led to a boatload of rumors as to why, because without another deal, MIL has little use for him.

A quick list I've seen today?

--Brinson is to be dealt for a SP (Archer?) or Realmuto.

--Santana is about to be dealt.

--Broxton and Santana are to be traded, likely for pitching.

The most often discussed idea?

--Crew signs with Crew. Brewers now have several OF's, and several teams have expressed interest in them. They can basically have a mini bidding war, and decide which OF to trade and for which return.
