They're doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing.
This is why they keep losing. They just can't help themselves. I read today that CNN is going to accomplish what many of us thought was impossible...to out pace Obama as the greatest gun salesman in history.
Giving students slanted questions to ask. Cheering about banning and confiscating weapons. Randomly yelling out violent threats to the beautiful Dana Loesch (who, as many pointed out today, was the only adult in the room for much of the evening). Asking why anyone needs a semiautomatic weapon, apparently, not realizing any gun that does not require reloading after a single shot; is semiautomatic.
And, as I have pointed out many times before, the insistence that guns be banned because they "look scary" is an embarrassment that makes them look like complete fools.
As Miller said, it was better and more effective than any ad the NRA could ever hope to put together.
I will end with this...in the past few days, we have never seen more proof of a simple statement:
If they say "I'm not talking about banning guns," or "I'm not talking about confiscating guns," that's exactly what they want to do. The one good thing about a tragedy like this? People get emotional and mistakenly tell the truth. How many people have you seen on social media say, "Who cares about the 2nd Amendment? Who cares about the Constitution?"
It never occurs to them, even for a second, mind you, that if it can be changed or ignored on the spur of the moment...it can be changed or ignored again.

Out of the cliches and muddle, the most interesting note to me was Counsell saying the team will carry 13 pitchers and 12 position players *most* of the time this upcoming season.
That's not a surprise at all, for a couple reasons:
1. They did last season.
2. This year, they have added Boone Logan, who is maybe not a traditional loogy, but is somewhere between a loogy and a middle reliever who can get hitters from both sides of the plate out. Hence, it makes perfect sense that they will not carry fewer arms after adding a guy expected to usually only pitch to a single batter or two.
3. This is why the Crew has stressed versatility. 4 bench spots means 1 backup catcher. That only leaves 3 more, to cover the other 7 positions on the diamond and PH/PR.
Of course, *most* of the time is not all the time. There will be times when they have a MON/THU off, or a THU/MON off, in which it is possible the 5th SP will be skipped and added to the bullpen (or, depending on who the 5th SP is, sent down to the minors). Other times, the bullpen will be well rested, due to days off and long starts.

An armed guard or 2-3, depending on the size of the school, would eliminate 90% of them. Remember, these guys are cowards. The mere chance they'll get shot just by walking in with a gun will make most of them cower in fear and spend more time on their fantasy Dungeons and Dragons team.

I just read this morning that the Dems should pass a bill with 3 or 4 gun laws that already exist, and then claim a gigantic victory.
I know it sounds stupid, but that makes as much sense as anything I've heard. "Common sense solutions" and "limiting guns" sounds an awful lot like doing nothing to me, but they seem far more interested in preening for the camera that accomplishing anything.

Santana being traded before opening day 0-10%
Walker being 2B 10%
Brewers getting Archer 15%
Brewers getting Cobb 100%
Brewers getting Cobb before Monday 80%
Brewers getting Lynn 20%
Brewers getting Arrieta on a 5 year deal 15%
Brewers getting Arrieta on a 1 year deal 20%--High Heat 19
By the looks of this, HH19 seems to think the Crew's deal that fell through with ARI for Drury was the main one they were working on, and have now decided to hang onto him, barring a much improved offer.
Walker not expected back. I still feel this number is higher. In fact, I assume the sticking point is length of contract. If Neil would agree to 2 years, this may be done in 5 minutes.
Surprised to see Archer so low. Burnes must have been a key sticking point.
He has been all but sure about Cobb for a week now. Is it possible he's looking for a place in Milwaukee, or scheduled to do so soon?
Note the chance they end up with both Cobb and another SP. That would shock the world, wouldn't it?

The Brewers talked to the A's, Rays, Royals, and Twins today.--Hight Heat 19
KC almost certainly about Merrifield and/or Duffy.
TB...Archer? Other young SP's?
OAK...they have been said to be interested in Santana, makes sense for young pitching...they also have one year left of Jed Lowrie, who is very versatile.
MIN? Hmm. I do not know. They have been actively looking for pitching since last season ended. Dozier? Seems odd the Twins would deal him when they're looking to contend.

Brewers made it clear to the Rays. Burnes will not be part of a package for Archer.

I missed this yesterday...Counsell says Braun will only play LF and 1B. Yelich will get reps at all 3 OF spots this spring.
Yelich is not known for having a strong arm, to say the least (the Fans Scouting Report gave him a 31...Khris Davis ranks an 8, for comparison.
Other than Davis, I can't find a Brewers' OF that scored that poor of an arm for the last several seasons, except for Eric Thames, who scored a 43.
That would certainly be 5 players for 3 OF spots and 1B, and all but leave Aguilar, who was a very inexpensive, effective and productive last year (albeit, one who may be a bit limited because of his splits) out of the mix.

Friend of Ramblings High Heat 19 reports today:
--The concept of trading Santana has just hit 0.
He said they have been talking to the DBacks the past couple days, so I assume acquiring Souza from TB has eliminated their want of Domingo. Now reporting Brandon Drury almost became a Brewers' player today. Drury is young and versatile, so he certainly fits the Stearns' model of desirability.
Broxton and Aguilar are being shopped. Listening to Phillips as well.
I doubt Aguilar has much value, and Broxton's is limited also, cdertainly compared to Santana. However, to a team that is in need of a 1B/DH with pop and/or an athletic CF/4th OF, it might be a perfect fit. Both inexpensive too, with years of team control.
Santana as a backup would be clumsy, as he would obviously not play CF, and make Yelich bounce back and forth, but Counsell did not have a problem with that, saying Yelich would play CF and a corner spot while Cain would be the everyday CF.
HH19 also reports the Crew will probably wait until later in the spring to deal from their surplus, as they protect themselves against injury and also possibly have other clubs suffer injuries to create a need.

Rays continue to unload vets. Archer, Kiermaier, Colome left.--Heyman
Very unlikely, of course, as it would demand Braun move full time to 1B, and Thames and Santana be dealt, but an OF of Yelich/Kiermaier/Cain might well be the best defensively in many of our lifetimes.
An Archer/Kiermaier package would take about 5-6 young players/prospects, as both are signed long term for less than market value. Broxton could fit right in, as Kiermaier is a lefty hitter who is far better versus RHP, meaning Phillips could easily be included.

Dude A, career-----------.325/.504, 829, 29
Dude A, L3Y---------------.314/.489, 803
Dude B, career-----------.353/.468, 821, 25
---end of gap
Hosmer signed for $144M guaranteed last night.
Dude A is Corey Dickerson, who was DFA'd last night.
Dude B is Domingo Santana, who is certainly available on the trade market, for a price.
So, is Hosmer overrated, or is Dickerson underrated? Or, is the answer yes to both?
And, if Santana was a FA, would he be looking at a contract like Hosmer? I mean, he's several years younger.

Guerra would have to be awful this spring to not make the team, as he is out of options and would be claimed by a half dozen clubs out of pure principle.
It also would not surprise me to see him included in a trade, if one is made, as his 2016 and years of team control remaining give him artificially high value as a trade candidate at the deadline, or the offseason.

Heyman predicts Arrieta to MIL; while they are also talking to Lynn, Cobb, and Lucroy.
I predicted Lucroy as kind of a sleeper a couple months ago. I still think they might well end up with either a C or 2B (of the FA's, Walker is pretty much it), but not both.

I just assumed there was no real increase, because the left insists there is. Obama spoke up today that "we need some changes" but of course, was not specific.
On Outnumbered, Kennedy leaned over and loudly whispered, "It's too bad he didn't do anything about it in 8 years as president."
Amen. Didn't even pretend to. Gave eloquent speeches, though. All show, no go.

Nick Franklin has an opt out on June 15th if not in the bigs.
I would assume he has a "handshake agreement" that if a team calls the Crew and says they want him in the majors, the Crew will either bring him up or trade him. He's past the point where he's a real prospect, at this point.
Franklin will make $700K if he plays in MIL. That seems like a lot, until you realize the minimum is $545K.

All you need to know.
Remember that old joke, 50 years ago, if a student had a rifle mounted on the back of his truck, the principal would ask him what kind of gun it was, and they'd talk for 15 minutes about hunting, the principal's guns, and the like.
Today? That student is suspended, the FBI is called (granted, they would not do anything), and local police would arrest the student for any number of mythical crimes.

1. Rare to see a knee issue like this in such a young player. The 82 game grind at such a young age, when he was still growing, is likely to blame.
2. I don't think he should probably be practicing at all. Do sets and walk throughs, then treatment and medically approved weight and pool work.
I recall Eric Dickerson saying he never took a hit in practice the last 5 years of his career. Adjustments have to be made.

Meghan McCain's hubby relinks to one of his essays on guns from 5 years ago...still the same things being said. Obama didn't even try to fix it, as the problem is one of mental illness.
The irony? The folks trying to fix it don't even understand the AR15 is identical to hunting rifles, except it has plastic grips which look scary and military like to some, but do not help kill. Banning them would effectively ban all rifles...and last time I checked, handguns are far, far more often used in homicides.

Might just depend on if Vogt is throwing better. He hinted very strongly late last offseason he was not healthy, so hopefully, he will be better. Note that they can still choose a cheeseburger, but since it's not listed on the menu, most folks won't bother asking. Brewers sign Wade Miley to a minor league contract.
I liked Santiago's signing by the White Sox, and Miley is even better. Very good pitcher to bring in on a minor league deal.
Miley struggled with his control last year, but has pitched into some bad luck (and likely, bad Orioles' OF defense, as they always build offense first), as his FIP has been lower than his ERA all except in 2017.
Excellent depth piece, in case the team struggles with injuries and some Wilkerson/Suter types are ineffective. He has better numbers versus LH bats, but not good enough you'd expect him to be effective as a loogy.
EDIT: Miley did get incentives put in for games started, games pitched, and innings, so he feels the bullpen is an option for him.

Why? Because they knew it would work. And, of course, the union can't take money out of the paycheck directly anymore, so less than half the members actually bother sending in a check.
Whenever they talk about "fairness" and the like, you can bet your life it's all about cash.
Why do you suppose unemployment is so low and business is booming? It's directly related to the taxpayers having $5B more in their pockets. To build cabins, houses, and sheds. To buy boats, cars, furniture, and jewelry. To expand and start businesses.

Let's take a look at High Heat 19's rumors (and follow him, you morons).
--Has been talk for Broxton for Cotton. Brewer's value talent over stats.
That is Jharel Cotton, a young SP for the A's, who was rumored a while back by Rosenthal. At this point, he'd probably enter the battle for the bottom of the rotation, or as a swingman.
I really like Broxton as a reserve OF, as he's a RH bat who hits LHP at a plus level, so he can give Yelich a day off, and is very capable of playing all 3 OF spots. He's a decent option as a PH, and a terrific choice as a PR. Perhaps the reason I'd like to see him stay the most? Have you ever seen a better defensive OF than Yelich/Cain/Broxton late in the game? Cain and Braun are likely to miss plenty of games, due to injury and rest (casuals have not yet noticed that Lorenzo has missed almost as many games as Braun, because they're too busy being casual). Of course, as of today, Santana and Phillips are still in the picture as well, not to mention Perez and Thames. Kyle Wren is not on the 40, but was invited to spring training and while he lacks power, seems to possess all the qualities of a bench OF.
Boston has been keeping tabs on Santana. Boston wants to be notified before any trade involving Santana to another team. Santana's inquiring suitors since Nov. have been Boston, Cleveland, Oakland, Detroit, Tampa, Texas and Washington. In no particular order.
I expected BOS and PHIL to be the top suitors, though the Phillies interest has been minimized by signing Carlos Santana as a FA. Ironically, the Tribe is probably looking to replace him, at least partially, with Domingo. We've heard about the A's, as we often do, were in the mix, as they are for any bargain cheap bargain. He's been mentioned as fodder for Archer (and even Odorizzi). TEX? DC? DET? Not so much. Probably not a surprise 6 of the 7 clubs are in the DH league.
Brewers and other teams feel Archer will be dealt before opening day. Rays playing keep away and want best possible deal. Brewer's will not sell farm for Archer. Staring contest as of now.
Supposedly, the Rays asked for a huge package of Santana, Phillips, Burnes, and Peralta for Archer (though, perhaps another player(s) may have come back with Archer); so there are probably only a few teams that could stand to lose that much talent, never mind have such a group to give. There would seem to be plenty of room for compromise there, but as of yet, we have not seen it. The Rays are right on the brink of borderline contention, so at some point, we may them become more willing sellers.
Don't buy the "Rebuild is Over". Buy "We purchase talent at a discount".
Small market teams are perennially looking in the discount bargain bin to fill roster spots, and no one did it as well as Doug Melvin did. Stearns has continued the habit, though he has lost many of them as he tried to sneak them to the minors (part of this is because the 40 man is far more full of prospects than it was for most of Doug's tenure, little room to wait for the perfect time to outright them). Of course, not all discount talent is on the waiver wire, sometimes you can find a player available because his team is looking to cut payroll (earlier this offseason, I saw David Robertson of the Yankees as a possibility, but at $13M and signed only through 2018; given Stearns declined to offer arby to Jared Hughes for about $2.5M; that makes little sense, it would appear).
There's a false sense that when a rebuild is over you overpay a multitude of players to win this year. Brinson was not viewed high in the Brewers FO. Cain was a bargain, as he turned down a higher offer, which has never been reported.
Stearns has shown no desire to pick up players only under team control for a season, except at the deadline last year, with Swarzak and Walker. Cain told writers he wanted to return to MIL as soon as he became a FA, but he did not think they would have interest. He said as soon as the Brewers called, he told his agent to "make it happen." Think how disappointed the team that apparently offered more (SF?) must have been when they found out they lost him to Milwaukee, an unglamorous city in flyover country.
Some Brewer's FO feel that Yelich could be the next Robin Yount going forward. They will never say it as it may take away from Yount's legacy. But they see a similarity in Yelich's and Yount's skills and even their personalities are scary similar.
Never heard that before. Yelich is that type of player though, sort of an "easy athlete," as it appears everything comes easy for him, while guys like me always had to be at the top of their game to be mediocre in beer league softball.
No one will ever say it, of course, but part of the appeal of Yelich and Archer are they are already signed to below market deals. Very few pre arby players would even consider signing such a contract with the Brewers (Braun and Lucroy are the only ones I recall in 2 decades).
Brewer's have a plan for Arrieta, and it's not what you think. Just know that Stearn's is extremely methodical. I will no longer divulge further into Arrieta until he is signed. He may or not be a Brewer. Speculating will give you a headache. So don't do it.
I have hoped for Cobb and I continue to do so. He's younger and will come cheaper, both in annual average salary and in length of contract. He won't be projected to pitch as many innings, but that's why he'll sign for less.

No truth to the Braun/Kemp rumors, per our friend High Heat 19.
My bet is it was mentioned in passing. If one team or the other was rebuilding, it could make lots of sense. In fact, if I was the Marlins, I'd see if LA would give me 2 or 3 prospects for taking and paying Kemp, who is vastly overpaid, but is a lefty masher and passable versus RHP.

ADDED: This was the full email HH109m sent earlier.
Brewers knew from half way thru that the Cubs and Dodgers were Darvish first choices. And if the Crew wasn't getting Darvish which they knew, they were going to make sure the Cubs paid dearly. Where as the Brewers look to big players this summer and have already talked to teams about a big midsummer trade.

Between this and keeping relievers fresh by smartly using options, teams can pretty much have a 26-27 man roster.
Teams would be wise to use the DL to give veteran players rest, especially when a team has a chunk of days off in a week or week plus, like a MON/THU/MON or a MON/THU/THU. Remember, it's days, not games. I have often predicted that in a few years, instead of giving a veteran like Braun a day off, they will give him a series...probably won't even travel with the team.
A few years ago, NBA teams giving players days off was unheard of. Now, it's so common place, they made rules to limit the occurrence.

Whispers that Brewers are either raising their offer to Darvish (in money or adding a year) or moving on.
Many in the game feel the Brewers have had the best offer on the table for a week and he has only used it to solicit other offers. The Twins made a formal offer today, believed to be less than MIL.
And, it goes without saying, still talking to other clubs, with most mentions of TB and CLE.
There has been a CLE area person insisting a trade is about to go down since last Friday. Supposedly, they have been correct in the past, so I think they are probably close to something...of course, if neither team gives, one team or the other will eventually move on.

Read on Quora last night that omelets are so much better in restaurants because often a "3 egg omelet" might be 4-5 yolks and 1-2 whites.
That makes so much sense, it's mind boggling. I've always noticed scrambled eggs always seem far more yellow, though I can't say they taste richer. I always figured maybe they added "powdered eggs" which had artificial yellows in it.
For those wondering, they save a few whites in case someone orders an egg white omelet, but usually many get tossed every day. They're so cheap, no one cares.

Fleury was left unprotected in the expansion draft and was taken by Vegas. He was the backup goalie who won several playoff games last year as the starter was injured, as the Penguins won the Cup.

We should absolutely have a salute to the military parade, maybe on Memorial Day or Veteran's Day annually.
If we weren't so anti military since the 60's, this would not be a problem.
BUMPED, as some folks this is just Trump trolling the left to speak out against the military.

Seeing an awful lot of folks acting as if the Crew is doing the Tribe a favor in taking Jason Kipnis (or, as of yet, being interested in doing so) with CLE paying a portion of his $14M salary and his $15M salary in 2019.
Reading the complaints, the complaints are all coming from folks unhappy with his 2017 production, when he was injured.
2015--.372/.451, 823 OPS
Ave 2B--.334/.422, 756
Kipnis' Marcel projection for 2018 is .334/.443, 777 OPS. If he can remain healthy, Kipnis is likely to be above average at 2B. In fact, players coming off of a "down" season, especially one caused by injury, are often a "buy low" target of many teams. Kipnis is in his season of 31, so if he were a few years older, one might think it's just his natural aging. Kipnis and Walker are just about equal on defense (Jason is about -3 runs, Neil is about -4 runs over the course of a season), so it's just a matter of who you can get cheaper (and in Walker's case, no one knows if he'd like to come back or go elsewhere).

From the interwebs, with a thought or two added in.
--Crew still looking for a C. Could they be chatting with Lucroy?
--Braintrust not optimistic about Darvish. Continue to go after him.
--Rays and Brewers still discussing Archer. Stuck.
--Talking with several teams about Santana. Want to sell high.
--Have talked about Thames. Underpaid, so I assume they'd need to be overwhelmed.
--Brewers have a trade on the table, and have had, for about a week. Both teams are unwilling to compromise. It would seem to me that between Archer and this, something could happen at almost any time. Of course, both could involve some of same players, including Santana.
--Hearing more about Arietta and Cobb than Darvish, which seems to verify MIL thinks he will choose another team. Very little about Lynn, however.
--Salazar keeps being mentioned by almost everyone.

Bucks pick up decent, cheap C for Vaughn and a 2nd round pick.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if Vaughn has a decent career, especially with a team like the Warriors or Rockets, but he was only signed through this season and neither Kidd or Prunty had any use for him, choosing to play G Leaguers in his place when injuries occurred.

Much of the drop was due to computer programs kicking in, over half from what I can see. You're already hearing excited investors talking about "bargain hunting" tomorrow or later this week.
Much of the "problem" is the same thing we have in the Rambling household, as the Rambling wife has a 403b leftover from an old job. We've taken money out of it once or twice over the years, and had to pay a small penalty and taxes on it. About a decade ago, we were afraid we would need to take more out, so we move it all into cash. Hence, for about 10 years, we've ignored the market's ups and downs, for the most part. We were looking for a time to "jump back in" but never felt comfortable doing so. Looking back, we wish we would have done a few days before Trump was elected, but who wouldn't?

If I did not know better, I'd swear being a haven for the homeless will result in more homeless.
I don't recall the city, but there idea worked perfectly...they bought bus tickets and gave $20 in spending money to anyone they arrested for vandalism, vagrancy, public drunkenness, and other popular minor crimes which troublemakers are often arrested for. It was either that or a fine, so most chose the ticket and cash. It eliminated about 80%, and was a huge success.
Detractors said they were just moving the problem elsewhere, and the mayor or whoever said, "Hey, we ask them where they want to go. If we didn't care, we'd just send them all an hour down the road."
The main problem, I recall, was the criminals, after being loaded on the bus, would open an emergency door and force the driver to stop within a few miles of leaving town. Cops would drive reoffenders out of town, but the cash was a one time thing only, though they still gave them a bottle of water, because it was hot there.

Back when the Pistons won or were in the finals almost every year, they talked to a Detroit policeman, and he said it best:
If they win, everyone's going to come out and celebrate, and they'll pretty much destroy the city. But if they lose, they'll come out and start fires, and get into fights, and pretty much destroy the city. The only constant is, tomorrow morning, the jails are going to be full and folks will be putting the city back together. It's all they know.
30 years later, much of Detroit has been destroyed, and the teams don't even have to be bothered to win.
Philly is in the same boat today.

So now we know:
--The Obama team spied on the Trump team.
--The spying wouldn’t have happened if not for information provided by Russians to the Hillary campaign.
--The conduit who provided this information had a personal animus for Trump.
--Nothing to see here folks, move along.--Dan Bongino
If W and McCain would have done this to Obama, they'd still be in a concrete box in a concrete dungeon in a concrete prison.
The other thing is, the old media, after insisting Trump was guilty of trying to affect the outcome of the election for over a year, is now saying, "So?"
Search warrants are not to used for political gain. Search warrants are not to be asked for and received by untrue information paid for by political parties. And most of all, Obama sent oodles of emails to Hillary's unclassified email account that he claimed to know nothing about, while using a pseudonym, which is what guilty people do when they know they're guilty and don't want everyone to know they're guilty.
This is a 15 minute Law and Order episode. The rest of the time they can show Benson wearing form fitting evening gowns flirting with whatever fella she's currently dating, because to be honest, I've lost track of the laws broken in the above paragraph before I got to the word "oodles."
By the way, note the silence of Obama and Clinton since the memo was written. Its like they're sitting home, opening yet another bottle of wine, and saying "Well, the world might end. That could happen. Sure it could."

One could imagine Bradley being of interest to the Bucks, especially with Brogdon out and Bledsoe at less than 100%.
A Bradley/Delly/Snell/Middleton/Giannis small lineup might be the best defensive group they can field, despite being undersized. Many have put forth the idea that the best 5 the Bucks have would be Giannis with 4 guys camped out on the 3 point line, and even moreso if the opponent does not have a 5 with inside presence.
