Don't forget, all the cool kids insisted Matt Kemp was done. Why?

Because he "only" had an 800ish OPS the past couple years, I guess. The real irony is, Kemp is still just 33. He might play for another half decade if he wants to and can stay healthy.

The irony is, the "me too" movement would have never taken place if the guilty had been Republicans.

The victims would not have hesitated to blame GOPers. However, they did not want anyone to blame them for Dems losing their jobs.

Braun returns, Nottingham down.

I assume they kept Jacob an extra game just to insure themselves against Pina reinjuring himself and to allow some PH/PR freedom.

Another reason I think Stearns will add a reliever...they're cheap. Neither prospect was in the A's top 30, though, of course, that does not mean they'll never have success.

Freddy Peralta wasn't in the Mariners' top 30 when the Crew got him for Adam Lind either. Quantity is a fine thing to have too. As much as we disregard roster filler and organizational soldiers, by sheer numbers alone, sometimes, they make it.

After losing out on Machado, the D-Backs and Brewers are believed to be among the suitors for Asdrubal Cabrera, reports MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. Cabrera, an impending free agent, is expected to be moved before the July 31 deadline with the Mets out of the postseason race.

Both the D-Backs and Brewers have an opening at shortstop -- the Brewers could also use second base help -- though Cabrera has played second base almost exclusively since last year. He's played plenty of shortstop in his career, so sliding back over shouldn't be too difficult, though his defense at the position is questionable at this point of his career.

Cabrera is hitting .281/.334/.490 with 17 home runs this season. Arizona's shortstops have hit .230/.287/.430 this year while Milwaukee's middle infielders own a combined .227/.280/.332 batting line in over 800 plate appearances. Easy to see how Cabrera fits either team.--CBS

I can't imagine Cabrera playing SS...unless, of course, he's paired with Brad Miller up the middle. That said, I'd probably prefer him over Dozier, being the OBP shark I am.

EDIT: Surprised to see Cabrera played about 500 innings at SS last season, I thought he had been playing 2B for at least 2-3 years. His numbers were weak there on D, but in a tiny sample, it could have been a couple bad hops. Overall, he's -5 runs by UZR, or -23 by DRS in the last 2500 or so innings, about 300 games.

This is how many evangelical voters feel. They have seen guys like Mike Huckabee get no votes.

Simply put, they'd rather win and get stuff passed than lose and not.

Me too. I'm puzzled why that's a surprise to anyone. I love my country far too much to see it suffer in the hands of Obama and Hillary.

As I have pointed out a couple times, while the old media is pretending these tariffs are brand new, President Trump is pointing out that while the USA "fighting back" is new, the other nations have been using them for years.

I'm not sure if he's going to make this a "look at me, I'm working for you" issue or not...but I would not be surprised. Thus far, he has been spot on in choosing which topics to have the old media attack him on...and then realize the public sides squarely with the White House.

There are a lot of companies this will work very nicely with.

Changing the subject, it's also a reason why family farms are not nearly as efficient as huge operations (disparagingly called CAFOs) by those envious of their ability to make money. Happy employees that look forward to work usually do a far better job than those who are told to do something even though they may well not want to.

Showing up that 5th day, for many paperpushers, is just a waste of time. A few less trips to the bathrooms and fewer long lunches...and the motivation of a 3rd day off, easily makes up for that 5th day of work...which is often just a half day anyway. The Rambling wife's office is often completely empty on FRI afternoons...she was once the last one to leave at 2:30.

Last updated with the games of FRI, 7/20.

With luck, I will try to keep this updated daily.

Years ago, Pete Vuckovich was the Brewers' TV color guy, or one of 2-3 that season, I can't recall. For all of his drunken exploits and overall goofy stories involving him that are brought up; he was a pitching coach, pitching coordinator, scout, or assistant to the GM for a variety of MLB teams for the better part of the past 30 years, so he's not some dumb oaf. He was far from a brilliant analyst, as his knowledge was almost entirely talking pitching and pitch selection.

However, one night, almost in passing, the Brewers scored their 4th run of the game, and went up like 4-1 or 4-2. He called that "the run of victory," or something like that. He went onto say, for all but a team or two, the 4th run was key. In fact, he said, almost every club will have a losing record if they score 3, but a winning mark if they score 4. The play by play guy, who I think was Jim Patchke, all but ignored it.

Vuke, probably pushed on by the guys in the truck, as this was like Twain literature compared to his usual drivel, added the same was true for pitching, if you give up 4 or less, you'll probably win, and 5 or more, you'll probably lose. I have always remembered this and have always found it to be 100% accurate...but have never heard another baseball person say it, even 30 years later.

The other thing I'll add is note how much better of a manager Counsell is when his pitchers pitch nicely and/or his hitters score a bunch. It's not a complicated game.

I have never figured out how to "read" Doug Melvin, and now, David Stearns, who I'm sure sat down and chatted with Stearns about keeping his cards close to the vest when he came to MIL. However, while he, as usual, managed to say almost nothing in several minutes with the TV team, he seemed to go out of his way to say, as far as run prevention foes, just about every team would like to add an arm this time of year.

While most of the talk has been about Dozier (and a SS/2B type would certainly make sense), I would be shocked if they did not pick up a pitcher, though I seem to be in the minority who feels it will be a reliever or swingman rather than a SP.

First of all, they're not that short.

Second of all, do they realize they're not as short as volleyball players wear all the time?

Fangraphs just did their "most trade value" series they do annually.

Many of the Brewers' supposed trade targets, young SP's with team control, fell off the list from last year, Archer, Fullmer, Stroman, Ray to name a few.
Now, some of them fell off because they have been ineffective. Still, I see this as buying merch on sale. Guys with a career ERA of 3.25 do not have years of 3.11, 3.17, and 3.41. They have years like 2.45, 4.44, 3.51. It all balances out.

Cubs acquire Chavez.

If you will recall, it was reported the Brewers and Chavez had agreed to terms, but Jesse later signed with TEX. May have been a 40 man issue.

The irony is, on message boards, many said Chavez was HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE, and AWFUL, as I believe he had a bad 2017. Amazingly, he's been effective this season, and as pointed out, is a "swingman" type, capable of functioning as both a SP and RP. I believe the Cubs have several makeups games, so they probably have a few doubleheaders, or just feel the need to protect their bullpen.

7/19/2018 10:10:00 PM

(7/19/2018 09:40:00 PM) - Al

One thing to remember, if the Crew would trade for Dozier, it does not mean he'll play every day. He would go into "the mix" with Miller, Perez, and so on. It is funny how few seem to remember Walker was basically platooned after being acquired last year, but, on the strong half of the platoon.

Right now, Saladino is going to play SS most days, as he is hitting well and by far the best defensive SS currently with the club. But I can certainly see Miller picking up plenty of starts at 2B if he's hitting RHP (he has never really hit LHP). If they both start hitting, then maybe we'd see more Miller at SS, until the inevitable defensive replacement occurs (no offense to Brad, he makes the routine plays, but he's not a SS anymore, but you go with what you got).

As I often say, having plenty of good players having good seasons is not a problem to me. If you have Yelich or Cain, they play most every day. Otherwise, you go with the hot hand or the matchups. Counsell probably gets 50 pages of printouts every day with every imaginable split and the like. But the truth is, if someone goes 3-4 one day, if a same handed pitcher starts the next day, they'll likely get the first chance.

In case you are wondering why this has not been covered in the old media, it's because it is proof, once again, a decade later, Sarah Palin was 100% correct in her prediction of death panels.

Once they start, soon, no disabled, different, or "special" kids will ever be born. Then, they'll move onto shorter, chubbier kids. Finally, they'll start eliminating the dumb ones, at 3 or 4.

Why? Because, like these kids, they cost too damn much.

I actually noticed this a few days ago.

I assumed they would pair it with a newer film at the drive ins since it is summer...despite the fact most folks are obviously there for the newer film, they split the gross 50/50.

Regardless, they will never pull BP until it hits $700M...by hook or by crook.

On the subject, while many folks were insisting the end of the movie business was upon us (as they have been doing since I was a child), 8 of the top 12 highest grossing films in the USA have been released in the past 3.5 years. I realize tickets are more expensive, but, let's not pretend the movie industry is anytrhing but strong.

I'm not sure of many things, but I am sure of this...in 50 years, and well beyond that, people will be gathering together in large rooms to watch movies.

1. Politifact leans way left. Remember, they insisted his "you can keep your doctor" was the true, before changing their mind to "lie of the year" when everyone pointed out what hacks they were.

2. "Pants on fire?" A complete fool would be a far better summary.

I may not always be correct, but there's 2 things I was dead accurate on from day one....Davy Hogg and this gal are both as stupid as they get. Every time they speak, the right gains voters. That's why I often repeat what they say.

One thing to be learned from the Hand/Cimber trade...always draft the best possible player available, don't worry at all if you already have a young player in that spot.

Think how great it would be if the Crew had Hiura and Hiura 2...you could deal one and still have a young 2B ready to take over as soon as sometime next season.

Orioles proudly enter 20th century, admit they need to rebuild.

Being on pace to win 47 games was more than likely Dr. Holmes' first clue.

Reload or accumulate young talent are the current buzz words, but when you proudly just moved into something that began 18 years ago, you gotta go slow. On APR1, 2019, if you look at their roster and see more than a couple players with more than 3 years of team control, we will know they failed.

This isn't nearly as bad as many government regulations.

To be honest, they just insist skim milk is "vitamin enriched" or "fortified," not sure which term is correct.

I just heard yesterday they are thinking of making almond milk and other types of "drinks" use another term other than milk. I know Sean Duffy has been pushing for that for ages.

(7/19/2018 10:21:00 AM) - Al

Damn Tribe is stealing Brad Hand from my Brewers. They got Adam Cimber, a useful reliever as well.

I might not be as unhappy once I see how much talent is going the other way. It should be more than the Dodgers gave for Machado, as Hand and Climber both have plenty of team control.

Top C prospect and top 10 prospect overall, Fransisco Meija (yep, the one in the blocked Lucroy deal) one player heading back to SD. That means a Brewers swap would have had to had Hiura in it.

Wow, hearing just Meija. You'd think SD would have wanted a couple low level prospects in case of injury. Of course, CLE had a player tons of teams wanted.

ADDED: The fact that Meija may end up in LF/RF (or, anywhere not catching), makes me think the early money is on CLE winning this trade.

(7/19/2018 09:30:00 AM) - Al

Unexpectedly!

One minor negative we've seen in the past 18 months is that gas prices have risen. Reasons for this are many fold, if I could explain it in a couple sentences, I would not bother, as I'd pass my time buying and selling futures for a few minutes a day as college coeds giggled around me, as I soaked my rough feet in various skin softeners, so they never itched again.

However, a couple weeks ago, AAA said more Americans were taking a vacation this summer than ever before (no I do not know if this is defined by traveling X amount of miles or more, or what...nor do I care). Regardless, it was hailed as a sign of the booming economy, because, wait for it, people rarely take vacations if they are broke. Disposable income = travel and tourism.

{That's why the Obama era was not known for being good for tourism. However, one cannot argue it was excellent for paying far more premiums for far less healthcare.}

So, to be blunt, a booming economy means 2 things...more folks traveling and more goods being shipped. Both those things mean the demand for gas goes up, which (I'll double check with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just to be sure, since she's an economics genius!) means the supply has to go up as well. It costs money to drill, refine, and transport gasoline. Hence (raise your hand if you didn't follow), the price rises as well.

It's funny because it's true.

Everyone is a genius and knows how to do everything.

Shorter version: The experts that fawned over foreign policy that for 8 years sent cash to terrorists, called ISIS a JV team, drew a line in Syria and then meekly stuck its head in the sand and ignored the genocide of half a million people (with 6M displaced, google up Mercy Corps if you wish), and kicked the can down the proverbial road for 8 years now wonders if President Trump meeting with and negotiating with world leaders with nuclear weapons is a good idea.

It really is quite simple. Everyone is smart except Donald J. Trump. That’s why they all are billionaires and all got elected President. Only Trump does not know what he is doing. Only Trump does not know how to negotiate with Vladimir Putin. Anderson Cooper knows how to stand up to Putin. The whole crowd at MSNBC does. All the journalists do.

They could not stand up to Matt Lauer at NBC. They could not stand up to Charlie Rose at CBS. They could not stand up to Mark Halperin at NBC. Nor up to Leon Wieseltier at the New Republic, nor Jann Wenner at Rolling Stone, nor Michael Oreskes at NPR, at the New York Times, or at the Associated Press. But — oh, wow! — can they ever stand up to Putin! Only Trump is incapable of negotiating with the Russian tyrant.--Spectator.org

What we need, damn it, is the old media and Hollywood left to step in and save us. Because, after all, what would a businessman and real estate tycoon know about negotiating?

If only there was a community organizer who has never run anything in his life to step in and save the day!

Peralta pitched a few innings in Appleton tonight, will likely start MON for MIL.

Albers got 3 outs, on rehab.

7/18/2018 09:52:00 PM

(7/18/2018 08:15:00 PM) - Al

Going into last season, it was possible to believe that the Brewers’ outfield of the future would be Keon Broxton, Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana with veteran Ryan Braun mixed in.

But Milwaukee decided instead to upgrade in that area, signing Lorenzo Cain and trading an outfield prospect (Lewis Brinson) among others for Christian Yelich. That decision received validation with Cain and Yelich both making the NL All-Star team. So did Jesus Aguilar, whose emergence as the everyday first baseman motivated Milwaukee to move Eric Thames to the outfield (he is on the DL currently).

That suddenly leaves that outfield of the future without set positions and possibly to be used in some fashion in trades to bolster the Brewers before the July 31 non-waiver deadline.

“I think we have depth in that area,” Brewers GM David Stearns said by phone. “When you have depth in a particular area, the rest of the industry takes note and there are conversations about the areas of depth. It doesn’t mean you move the depth. The depth has helped us this year.”--NY Post

Yeah, it's quite a dilemma having too much talent that some players have to be traded. It's just like my wife being too pretty and my son too damn intelligent. Keeps me up nights.

I wish the Crew had this "problem" at every spot.

BAL/LAD trade to go through.

Something no one ever thinks about #782:

If the Brewers keep Scooter in 2017 (as I would have), it's very unlikely the last guy to make the team in 2017 makes the club.

Folks, Jesus was the last dude two years in a row. The only reason he made it in 2018 was they kept one less reliever than they wanted to and said they would.

7/18/2018 12:47:00 PM

(7/18/2018 12:00:00 PM) - Al

Hader will undergo "sensitivity training."

I would guess if we see any further punishment, either by the team or MLB, it will be announced soon, before games resume would be my guess.

7/18/2018 12:00:00 PM

(7/18/2018 11:54:00 AM) - Al

Brewers felt their offer to the Orioles was just as fair.  My source said 4 players were going over and Burnes was heard to be one of them as well as Phillips. Unaware of the other 2.

Next 2 weeks will determine a lot for the Brewers, and they don't want rentals if they don't do well in those next 2 weeks. They have the Dodgers twice in the next 2 weeks and understand they have to win in order to make it worthwhile for rentals.

So as I understood it, the Brewers want more team control if their record is more suspect going forward which will be determined in the next 2 weeks. Hence another reason Baltimore got this trade done as they were aware that teams may start to pull back as some contenders records may head south between now and the trade deadline.--High Heat 19

Even assuming it was Phillips, Burnes, and 2 lottery tickets, I can't say I'm unhappy. Again, that seems very close to what it would take to get Brad Hand or another controllable player.

As for the focus on rentals, that makes perfect sense. If they were 10 games up on a playoff spot, trading a couple prospects for players to help your 2018 chances makes sense. Doing so a few games out of a playoff spot does not.

Thank you for your info HH19.

Another righty, Jeff Ames, has been announced as the newest member of the Brewers organization. The 27-year-old was a sandwich-round selection in the 2011 draft but has yet to make it to the majors. He had worked to a 5.70 ERA with 12.9 K/9 against 3.8 BB/9 over 23 2/3 Double-A innings this year in the Nationals organization.--MLBTR

I saw this yesterday. Great K numbers, great results until he hit AA/AAA and then it all went to heck. Longtime Rays' fsarmhand, I'm sure Matt Arnold pushed for him. Must throw hard or have a huge breaking ball, but has never controlled it in the high minors.

You can't teach velocity.

Brewers making last ditch effort. Burnes now included.--High Heat 19

I'm not sure if they pulled back a player or two or what, but Burnes would be a very painful price to pay for 60 games of Machado...a guy that could easily be injured or not effective in a small sample like 2.5 months as well.

Um, this is like saying swimsuit models are gaining popularity among young men.

Of course they want to add 15 more highly paid spots for veteran hitters. This would also be a huge boom for relief pitchers, especially loogys, as most teams would carry fewer position players and more arms, as far less PHing will take place, while double switching will almost disappear.

Yusniel Diaz rumored to be the Orioles' prize pick up from the Dodgers.

(7/16/2018 10:00:00 PM) - Al

So, if I got this straight, the president was "too easy" on the Russians today.

{These are, of course, the same Russians that Mitt Romney was mocked mercilessly for calling a threat...the left said that was 80's foreign policy.}

Remember those punching bags with sand in the bottom of them, that bounce all around, that just keeps changing positions? Me too.

Meanwhile, when Obama whispered he would "have more flexibility after the election" he was showing a lot of backbone and incredible toughness.

Why do I question the sincerity of the old media? Because I'm not an idiot.

It's easy to change your mind when you don't really believe in anything.

I do not know who said it, but I have to agree...President Trump is doing a terrible job of being an arrogant warmonger. So far, he's been whatever the exact opposite of that is. The fact is, we have people rooting against the success of the USA, because, simply put, it helps the "other side." That's not showing much patriotism or love of country is it? Why? I'll leave that up to you, but it seems rather apparent to me...you can't lose what you never had.

Don't forget...how upset the left was when he peacefully met with and came to agreement with the goofball in NK...and then were overjoyed when an unnamed source insisted NK was cheating...which, as of yet, remains unproven (that said, no one knows they are NOT cheating either). No missile tests for 9 months, however, would seem to be stunning progress, compared to near weekly tests back in the old days (you know, before 2017).

(7/16/2018 08:48:00 PM) - Al

Well, if we keep hearing who it ain't, eventually, we'll figure out who it is.

No, we're all gonna pout and vote for Tammy 'I've never met a tax increase I didn't vote for and ask me about the Tomah VA scandal and I'll proudly tell you I didn't even pretend to do anything because, you know, it was the military" Baldwin.

I haven't studied in depth if I agree with Nicholson or Vukmir more, but if I ever filled out one of those "who do you agree with" surveys, it would probably be 94%-92%. I'll happily support the winner. The only thing that irritates me is...almost every Republican that has endorsed Vukmir has done so due to her "experience" in state government. Given what President Trump has achieved as an outsider who laughed at "politics as usual," I tend to prefer Nicholson's straight forward military and business background. I also admire his simple "it doesn't work" critique on the left's tax and spend "economic policy."

7/16/2018 06:16:00 PM

(7/16/2018 04:30:00 PM) - Al

Nope. Suddenly, everyone wants a tense Cold War relationship. Why?

Because President Trump doesn't.  Same reason they all voted against that "right to try" bill they'd previously supported. Don't pretend they give a damn about anyone, including the terminally ill.

The irony? A few spoke against it, but no one was as upset as I was when Obama gave Iran $2B in cash. That's what they call "negotiating." That's why I tend to not care what exactly they would do.

Shut up and win an election then.

7/16/2018 04:30:00 PM

(7/16/2018 04:13:00 PM) - Al

Orioles close to a Machado trade, some say it is with the Phillies, others say is wide open.

One can certainly imagine a "handshake agreement" with an announcement being made TUE evening/WED AM, much like the KRod deal years ago. If so, I would expect the Brewers to look even harder at a Dozier/Cabrera acquisition.

(7/16/2018 09:53:00 AM) - Al

Thank goodness other people take the time to write this stuff up.

I will simply add 2 things:

1. All season long, I have pointed out the Crew has been ahead of their "expected won loss record," often by 3 wins. Those things tend to even out.

2. Al season long, I have pointed out the Crew's main attribute is depth. Thames missed time, Aguilar stepped in. Nelson out, other SP's stepped in. Knebel missed time, the rest of the bullpen stepped up.

So let's take a step back...as we wake up this AM, they have exactly as many wins as one would expect, based on their runs scored and runs allowed. Their record in one run games and extra innings, which both tend to be closer to .500 than overall marks if you have a large enough sample size, have trended to the norm.

I still believe in their depth. However, some teams go through an entire season without 10 players on the DL...never mind all at once. The irony is, you can add in Arcia and Santana here too...this is why I always says and lost to injuries and ineffectiveness. Pina, Braun, Thames, and Villar did not carry the team, but their loss effectively took said depth away.

In April, Aguilar was depth, so when Thames was lost, Jesus stepped in. Now, Thames was lost, and we've seen a variety of replacements. Aguilar "struggled" a bit in the Pirates series, and the replacement was Hernan Perez, who is a weak hitting corner OF, never mind 1B (though technically Shaw played 1B, you know what I mean). Braun is a same case scenario. Villar was not even playing regularly, but again, a cog in the matchup machine is gone.

It reminds me of those survival blogs.

Two is a good start. One is the same as none.

Some folks consider that greed, but it makes perfect sense. Whatever you are building a stockpile of...well, 2 is pretty much your minimum. Why? Because when you have 1, you are only a single part breaking or wearing out from having a non useable item...and then you have 0. Now, if you're talking about the world as we know it today, that's no big deal. I have a half dozen auto parts stores within 5 miles of my house. I have several places that will happily fix stuff for me. I have a neighbor who does much of it for a fraction of the price as a garage. However, despite the negative nellies, we're booming, the world is quite likely as wealthy as it has ever been.

They haven't even mentioned collusion in months. I believe this is called "moving the dial."

I forget who said it, but the quote "There's still 25M people in Russia that will never see the inside of a US courtroom, if Mueller wants to pad his stats" kind of sums it up perfectly. They continue to prove exactly what the president has said...DC is full of insiders that protect one another and despise the fact someone else has come in and done the job 100 times better.

The answer to both is the same. You can't destroy something you want to stay on the good side of. There will never be a bigger coward, nor anyone who believed in American exceptionalism less. As I predicted, we'll be cleaning up that mess for decades.

Well, we can hope.

They just keep doing it, and when they get caught, they do it again and again.

If they were always truthful, it would destroy the fake news claims.

The problem? They're not always truthful, and they don't even pretend to hide it.

7/14/2018 08:30:00 PM

(7/14/2018 07:15:00 PM) - Al

There is speculation that the Brewers will be looking to purge their system in the upcoming weeks. They are not looking at any particular player but what gives them the most value going forward. This allows them to keep Hiura, Peralta and Burnes.

Players that fit this bill would be "good" players who fit the Brewers system and with the emphasis on contract control. Realmuto and Fulmer fit this idea but maybe too steep as the Brewers are not keen on giving up the big 3 I mentioned earlier.

The Brewers are more open to trading Ortiz, Phillips, Grisham, Ponce, Gatewood, Stokes Jr., and Supak. They are more reluctant to part with Hiura, Burnes and Peralta as well as Ray, Lutz, especially Dubon, and Zack Brown. They are willing to part with Domingo but would like to have Arcia compete with Dubon next year. Assuming Arcia is not sent for Machado which has been discussed.--High Heat 19

Stearns has kept the same plan since day one, and I do not see that changing. If he trades young players, he'll get team control players in return. The only way I see any of the players HH19 has listed moving is for either a very good rental, or for a solid player with team control remaining.

Stealing the election? That's the opposite of what Mueller said. He made it VERY clear it had no effect on election. Russia meddles every year, so does China, Iran, etc. Why didn't you care then? Obama meddled in many elections, like Israel. And this is a fraudulent investigation.--Stonewall Jackson

1. Obama can do whatever he wants. You racist.

2. The irony is, Obama was all for the meddling and did not care at all...until his side lost. Once again, those stern, strong beliefs of the left are on display.

3. The longer they believe and act as if their consistent history of punishing success and despising the military and law enforcement did not cause them to lose, the better.

(7/14/2018 03:00:00 PM) - Al

They never looked at the server because they knew they'd find stuff damaging to Hillary. They can't talk about that fact while the "investigation" is ongoing. The investigation will be ongoing as long as there is a Russian (fictional or not) charged with a crime.

It's a maze without an endpoint. The problem is, most Americans, including most Dems, know nothing will ever come of it. They think that by bringing it up, it damages President Trump. But it doesn't. He's been saying it's a witch hunt and fake news for 18 months. He is right. The longer it goes on, he will remain right. Every time he says "fake news" it allows people to say, "Yep, just like that Mueller thing."

I'm not a contrarian to be cool. I'm a contrarian because stupid people do stupid things and then can't understand why they're being called stupid.

Of course, I'm not exactly what one would call a people person. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to shake my fist at the sky and tell some kids to get the hell off my lawn.

(7/13/2018 09:33:00 PM) - Al

Brewers will not up their offer (for Machado). However, they feel they have a very good offer on the table. They are prepared to walk away and will not get into a bidding war. Merrifield is a strong possibility moving forward.

Brewers will change parts but will not increase the overall value of a trade for Machado.--High Heat 19

I am not a big fan of Merrifield, as he is very average versus RHP, which, of course, 75-80% of the pitchers are. However, given his production and cost, he certainly is a decent piece to the puzzle.

I would go after Escobar and/or Dozier. And, as I have stated before, I'd go after relief help, and namely Eovaldi of the Rays, who is more of a swingman.

7/13/2018 09:33:00 PM

(7/13/2018 08:31:00 PM) - Al

With Woodruff going 3 tonight, I assume the Crew would like to exchange him for another pitcher, but the only ones left on the 40 are Marcos Diplan, a youngster in AA, and Wilkerson, who can't return unless someone is DL'd, or if he's the 26th man.

They might be able to finagle that a bit, as Suter is also due back tomorrow.

7/13/2018 08:31:00 PM

(7/13/2018 08:15:00 PM) - Al

I must admit, the fact Obama not only did this, but was caught, makes the fictional concern Dems have with Trump and Putin making deals in secret even more hilarious.

Let's be honest, this is the same fella that said a business did something wrong that did not exist at the time. I'm not saying he's making stuff up...he does that himself by making stuff up.

And no, I'm not sure how he expects to find collusion in the 2016 election by digging through tax returns and passport data from 8-15 years ago. Almost like there's an ulterior motive...

7/13/2018 06:47:00 PM

(7/13/2018 06:01:00 PM) - Al

Thew more things change, the more things stay the same.

The new Orioles are just like the old Orioles.

A couple years ago, I recall an unnamed executive saying they had a deal agreed to with the O's after weeks of back and forth...BAL would ask for a player, then later say they were uninterested in said player. Everyone assumed it was ownership. Finally, the right mix was achieved. The exec said his team faxed/scanned in the proper paperwork, and BAL said they would too. After a couple hours, there was no confirmation. They called the Orioles, and no one answered any of the phones, the GM, assistant, landlines, and so on. Finally, BAL called and said they needed another player, a barely thought of prospect whose name had been in and out of the trade for the entire process. The team thought so little of him, they were actually willing to just add that player into the already agreed upon trade. But, as you can imagine, the principle of the thing bothered them. They agreed to let bygones be bygones and add the player to the trade.

At some point in this process, about 6 hours after the original trade had been agreed to, BAL dealt the player elsewhere. They never called or emailed the original team. This team, per their word at least, has not taken a call from the Orioles since.

Houser down, Woodruff up is today's move on the Sky Sox transit.

Brandon has not pitched since July 2nd. The Crew often gives minor leaguers a week or so off, so it is unknown if the "break" was related to a Machado trade, or pure coincidence.

7/13/2018 02:02:00 PM

(7/13/2018 01:16:00 PM) - Al

However, Rosenthal suggests that while the Dodgers and Yankees have the strongest offers on the table, the Brewers are beginning to fade from the mix, while the Diamondbacks are, at this point, “on [the] periphery” of the market.--Rosenthal

One gets the feeling the Crew has maxed out their offer, and is looking at alternatives.

Too bad Josh Harrison is having a down season. I've been suggesting him for 2-3 years now. Pretty much only playing 2B these days also. I recall I mentioned Sal Torres for so long, when he ended up in MIL, it was almost like he'd already played there.

Players that are "smaller in stature" do not tend to have long careers, for whatever reason. One might hypothesize they might simply wear down quicker, many having overachieved.

The Pirates will almost certainly allow him to be a FA after this year, and he will probably have a nice career as a full time utility guy, without the stress of playing every day. Be a nice platoon guy too, always been a lefty masher, until 2018.

(7/12/2018 05:37:00 PM) - Al

Seeing casuals ask if Peralta is going to be out of options, because he only gets 3, and that Stearns and Counsell sure aren't very good at this.

The first comment? They said a player going down to AAA "did not count" if they only stay in the minors "for a while." As long as they come back later, like in SEP, he'll still have all 3 options left.

That's not right, but I did find the idea that the phrase "for a while" would be in the official option rules.

For those of you curious, players actually get 3 "option years." They can up and down as many times as the team wishes in those 3 years. Freddy was added to the 40 man roster in the offseason, so he would not be stolen in the Rule 5 draft (he certainly would have been). When he was sent down in spring training, he used his first option. When he remained in the minors for 20 days, that option became official (if he would have spent 19 days or less in the minors, he would not have used one for 2018). So, he has used his 2018 option, and has 2 remaining. He can go up and down 0 or 22 times this year the rest of the way.

7/12/2018 05:37:00 PM

(7/12/2018 05:20:00 PM) - Al

I believe Stearns is from New York, however. Home often has a huge appeal. In fact, one might consider that to be his dream job.

Good thing they solved that problem with leeches.

Of course, that's how they solved every problem back then. You see, they were uneducated rubes. Today, we're much smarter, because we realize that global warming makes it colder.

Except us fiscal conservatives. We're total morons.

If one didn't know better, one would think weather goes in cycles, and is sometimes hot and sometimes cold. Of course, no one makes any money on the lack of hysteria this creates. The irony is, every single prediction they have made has been wrong...but yet, the fraud continues.

Unexpectedly.

And to think, without a bit of revenue enhancement Obama used to "spark" (chuckle, guffaw) the economy. Actually, that's not true. Revenues have never been higher, even though rates are lower. That's what a successful economy does.

A rising tide lifts all boats. Funny, there is no old saying about punishing the successful helping everyone...

That's because they can always call their friend the USA to do their dirty work for them. I'd install a special line just so I could stop whatever I was doing so I could happily say "Go to hell," in a bright, cheery voice.

As others have pointed out, the fact not a single president called them on this (or in Obama's case, pointed it out, drew a red line, and then went on ESPN to pick his brackets).

Another reason names like Santana, Arcia, Broxton, and Phillips are sneaking into these trade rumors?

As I have talked about all season, 40 man roster issues. It is packed full, with only one possible name I see that will not "hurt" to see lost for nothing, which would be Alec Asher.

That's why I would not be at all surprised to see Villar dealt if they acquire an infielder, or so on.

Add Lopez to my previous list of Barnes and Peralta.

Could see a bunch of roster moves before tomorrow's tilt. Terrible night for Freddy to go 3+. Young pitchers often struggle with consistency.

Sounds like Suter is ready to be the 26th man SAT as well. Curious is he will be sent down or another player for the final game.

EDIT: Counsell agrees there will be moves to the pitching staff. If they go with 3, I'll guess Miley, Houser, and Woodruff. Asher and Wilkerson have both pitched very well of late also.

What's so sad is, it's non binding. They have over 300 bills the House has passed this year alone to look at, but they're too busy doing this.

Even worse, as the president has shown, it's not the USA who has terrible tariffs, it's our trading partners, who supposedly have to add them...but no one really knows why. President Trump has offered to get rid of all of them, but no one wants to even discuss that, as those nations have no desire to lose that free cash pouring into their nations.

Of course, with the booming economy (best since Reagan...unexpectedly), they are inconsequential, at least until things cool off. The idea of negotiating better just seems to terrify most everyone...except Trump, who has done this his entire career, and with great success.

The Mets just sound like they're tired of him being hurt.

They're in the wrong business then. Sign him, rehab him, and see what he's got. I assume they have questions about how hard he's working to get healthy, but the Mets have a terrible reputation (Matt Harvey) of giving up far too soon on talent. Molina will probably have a dozen plus teams offering him a deal, he'll probably end up with a signing bonus.

Just saw someone suggest the Twins add Fernando Rodney to a Dozier/Escobar swap with the Crew, for a Brett Phillips or Corey Ray level prospect. That actually made sense to me, though Ray's value is going through the roof with him finally hitting the ball for the first time as a pro.

Next comment, "Nope. Don't like the way he (Rodney) wears his cap."

Some folks have mighty high standards. Heck, I don't even care if he wears a cap. Or has hair.

7/11/2018 03:00:00 PM

(7/11/2018 02:46:00 PM) - Al

Dozier picking the right time to get hot.

The Twins might trade both he and Escobar, though the odds of them both going to the same team is low...but not zero, especially since Escobar can play almost anywhere.

A soft platoon of Dozier and Miller would likely mesh nicely, though Dozier has struggled this season versus LHP, over his career, he has just under a 900 OPS against southpaws.

While Escobar is ultra versatile, Dozier is pretty much only a 2B at this point...though I suppose you could have said Miller can't play SS a month ago too.

Environmental regulations were never about the environment, it was all about punishing success and enhancing revenue, to use a Obamaesque term.

Successful companies will limit pollution on their own, because it's good PR. Companies that are overtaxed and have to choose between clean air and survival...well, that really isn't much of a choice, is it?

Jeffress has been very lucky to accomplish this too. That said, you have to be. Very impressive, however.

Funny, during the Machado rumors yesterday, I said to myself, "Self, I'd let the others fight over Manny and go after Escobar."

Morosi, today.

I like Dozier, but only for all but free. He's making a fortune for his production.

Zach Duke and a couple other relievers would be nice adds too.

And I love Lance Lynn. He'd be a fine swingman. Not saying he'd like that, but then again, I ain't in the make Lance Lynn happy department.

EDIT: Don't be scared away by Lynn's high ERA, remember, he missed almost all of spring training. 4.02 ERA since May 1st.

Miley will start THU. Since Peralta pitches WED, he could go down for 10 days and not miss a start.

Also be interesting to see who they go with and the 26th man to pitch SAT. I assumed Wilkerson would return, and he might, but they have plenty of options, Houser, Asher, Woodruff, and Diplan all on the 40 and pitching at various shades of effectively.

Counsell's presser delayed (or tech problems), were they asking him his opinion about a proposed trade, or updating him? Or, just a coincidence?

He may have just been enjoying a sandwich and a bowl of fruit, I suppose.

Funny, suddenly far fewer casuals want to deal Burnes. This afternoon, Twitter was full of "Who is this Burnes fellow? He has a 5+ ERA. Trade him, who cares."

O's want Burnes from Crew as part of Machado package.

3 months ago, imagine them asking for Freddy Peralta.

Crew wants to give them Ortiz and Phillips, in my opinion, a very fair ask for 2.5 months of Machado. Both have warts, Ortiz is heavy set and has been injury prone; but both could be solid big leaguers.

Turns out, it was not farmers and ranchers committing suicide, but farm workers. I would assume they mean mostly low income, mostly traveling folks who, suffice it to say, have a very, very tough life.

I saw an article last winter that said the author had been all over the USA, working in the ag field, and every time suicide among farmers came up, he would ask the people if they knew of anyone, and over 100 times, the answer was always 100% no. He said he did not know if that study was flawed or not, but those who thought suicide was rampant in agriculture were wrong. Turns out, he was correct.

As a lawyer messaged me on Facebook today, Kavanaugh will be Hitler, because whoever Trump nominated was going to be Hitler.

But, of course, when everyone’s Hitler, nobody’s Hitler, and the Democrats have been slinging the H-word around rather a lot for the past couple of years. When you have the hysteria turned up to 11 all the time, it has less traction when you need it.

(As comedian Dennis Miller tweeted: “Just to keep things in perspective, or not, Trump could nominate either Amy Coney Barrett or Vladimir Putin tomorrow and the headlines would be exactly the same.” He’s not wrong).--Glenn Reynolds, USA Today

Time will tell if the crying wolf has any negative effect.

I know it's beyond most folks, but "price gouging" is just supply and demand.

For example, if bottled water is 3 for $1, the first dozen people will each buy a case or two, throw it in their car, and drink 3 bottles and let the rest sit in the trunk until the disaster is long over.

Put a price tag of $5 on each bottle, a family of 3 will buy 2 or 3 and leave the rest for others.

Why do most people don't understand this simple economic truth? Because most people are usually wrong. That's why I'm not just a contrarian, but I'm a contrarian who's usually right.
