(7/31/2018 11:59:00 PM) - Al

Jeffress for the 9th, not Knebel.

Downright strange. Hope Corey is healthy.

BUMP: Counsell said with 3 RH bats up, it set up nicely for Jeffress. TV did not show if Knebel or Hader were up in the bullpen in case someone reached.

Knebel faced Machado, and perhaps others the night before as well. Always prefer having batters see a new arm if possible.

Of course, we all know how it works...they can play the oddsand set them up for success all they want, but if they give up any runs, they shoulda went with someone else.:)

7/31/2018 11:59:00 PM

(7/31/2018 11:45:00 PM) - Al

3rd 1-0 win of the year.

Good teams win low scoring games and high scoring games.

They are also back to being 2 wins above "expected." A little good fortune is always a good thing.

(7/31/2018 11:06:00 PM) - Al

Asking the important questions:

Why doesn't the couple in the Humana ad just eat more tuna sandwiches and get better seats?

7/31/2018 11:06:00 PM

(7/31/2018 08:26:00 PM) - Al

Craig Counsell confirms Jonathan Schoop is expected to be activated tomorrow. Will he play some shortstop with the Brewers moving forward? "I do think you’ll see him at shortstop," he said. "It’s something that we’ve thought of that’s a possibility, for sure."--JS

I would assume they have now talked to Schoop and he says he'll play anywhere they wish.

FYI. Schoop is pronounced "scope," like the mouthwash.

7/31/2018 08:26:00 PM

(7/31/2018 08:06:00 PM) - Al

Oh, to have the guts to write such a "recommendation letter."

7/31/2018 08:06:00 PM

(7/31/2018 07:46:00 PM) - Al

Jimmy is just beginning spring training. He would appear to be at least 4-6 weeks away.

7/31/2018 07:46:00 PM

(7/31/2018 04:09:00 PM) - Al

Looks like tomorrow at the earliest in LA for Schoop.

Saladino can go down, which is what I expect too.

7/31/2018 04:09:00 PM

(7/31/2018 04:05:00 PM) - Al

Does not sound like Schoop will play much SS, per Stearns. Helps rhe bench, Stearns said.

Might want to give Aguilar a few games off and see if he gets healthy.

7/31/2018 04:05:00 PM

(7/31/2018 04:02:00 PM) - Al

Almost got a SP today. Will not say who.

7/31/2018 04:02:00 PM

(7/31/2018 04:01:00 PM) - Al

Ordered a bigger TV during Amazon Prime sale.

Added the extended warranty because it was under $3. Never got an email or an envelope. Just filled out a complaint on Amazon. Reply from company in email:

Sorry you are unhappy with your purchase.

Well, that does not help me.

7/31/2018 04:01:00 PM

(7/31/2018 04:00:00 PM) - Al

It's like an ass kicking contest versus a one legged man.

Her's a question no one can answer...which Hogg is stupider? There is no correct answer.

7/31/2018 04:00:00 PM

(7/31/2018 03:59:00 PM) - Al

There's that word "depth" again. That's the one thing that concerns me actually about the rotation...I like Woodruff and feel he's a solid 4 ERA guy. However, a bit worried he's not stretched out and he is the 6th SP right now.

7/31/2018 03:59:00 PM

(7/31/2018 03:56:00 PM) - Al

Stearns says he tried hard to get a SP, some that were traded and some that were not. Looking to AUG.

7/31/2018 03:56:00 PM

(7/31/2018 03:54:00 PM) - Al

Waiting to hear from Stearns.

Schoop replaces Villar on the 40. The 40 man stays at 38.

Stearns uses some classic Stearns speak. Does not make specifics, so I doubt he has spoken to Schoop yet about if he is comfortable playing SS.

7/31/2018 03:54:00 PM

(7/31/2018 03:40:00 PM) - Al

Schoop played 224 games at SS in the minors, 222 at 2B.

I expect him to be a step down from Arcia, but passable. Waiting to hear if he is the everyday SS or what.

7/31/2018 03:40:00 PM

(7/31/2018 03:34:00 PM) - Al

Pleskoff loves it. I'm sure Davey Johnson does too.

7/31/2018 03:34:00 PM

(7/31/2018 03:30:00 PM) - Al

Well, to be fair, she missed 3 of her naps that day...

7/31/2018 03:30:00 PM

(7/31/2018 03:16:00 PM) - Al

Schoop will play some SS.

Total return: Luis Ortiz, Jean Carmona, Jon Villar.

#7 and 14 per

Villar was on track to be nontendered.

7/31/2018 03:16:00 PM

(7/31/2018 03:11:00 PM) - Al

(7/31/2018 03:10:00 PM) - Al

Schoop just arrived in clubhouse, does not know if he is with Orioles.

Reports are Crew and O's made a deal, but not sure if it got in on time.

7/31/2018 03:10:00 PM

(7/31/2018 03:08:00 PM) - Al

A wise man said the SP had to be better than Woodruff. I'm not sure Harvey is.

Tom actually sums it up nicely.

They keep making up stuff hoping someone agrees to testify.

This was the plan from day one. And to hide the dossier/wiretaps/warrants stuff, which finally leaked out a week or two ago.

7/31/2018 01:30:00 PM

(7/31/2018 01:27:00 PM) - Al

7/31/2018 01:27:00 PM

(7/31/2018 01:26:00 PM) - Al

Likely to see at least a half dozen trades in the last 90+ minutes. You can't fall down without landing on a veteran reliever that is on the block.

7/31/2018 01:26:00 PM

(7/31/2018 01:24:00 PM) - Al

Crasnick says Pirates out on Gausman.

7/31/2018 01:09:00 PM

(7/31/2018 01:01:00 PM) - Al

I think this is pretty close to what it would take to get Archer, actually.

I also think Hiura is more likely to be dealt than Burnes or Peralta.

7/31/2018 01:01:00 PM

(7/31/2018 12:42:00 PM) - Al

7/31/2018 11:53:00 AM

(7/31/2018 11:49:00 AM) - Al

Tons of mentions of Matt Harvey to MIL.

I have to wonder if he's the fallback plan, and the Crew has until XPM to tell the Reds they want him.

(7/31/2018 11:41:00 AM) - Al

(7/31/2018 10:56:00 AM) - Al

This article tells us that when a player is traded, the team stops using them in their marketing.

Good work.

That sound you heard was liberals cursing our citizen's sustained comfort.

This is why I know I'm on the right side.

7/31/2018 10:30:00 AM

(7/31/2018 10:27:00 AM) - Al

Bowden thinks Archer will be traded. Brewers in the mix.

Odd they traded for Pham and are looking to trade a solid SP under team control for 3 more years. That's a strange team.

7/31/2018 10:27:00 AM

(7/31/2018 10:18:00 AM) - Al

The projected return for 2 months of Gio?

I'd guess a prospect ranked in the 20's, plus maybe an additional low level guy.

7/31/2018 10:18:00 AM

(7/31/2018 10:13:00 AM) - Al

The Brewers talked to Hellickson as a FA last offseason also.

If you are thankful for law enforcement like me, take a minute off and go donate.

Maybe together, we can put enough together so that thug who killed him, you know, falls off a cliff.

Or something.

7/31/2018 10:10:00 AM

(7/31/2018 10:04:00 AM) - Al

If the Brewers did not have Saladino and Perez; I'd love to add Dozier.

Hernan is making almost $2M, and will probably make more next season, so there's a chance he will not be back.

7/31/2018 10:04:00 AM

(7/31/2018 09:53:00 AM) - Al

A wise man talked about Gio Gonzalez a day or two ago.

Gio is a rental, by the way. Considering all of the Crew's SP's are under team control for at least next season, that's fine with me.

I spelled that right on the first try, by the way.

(7/31/2018 09:40:00 AM) - Al

Bernie and Alex's utopia.

Why don't they cut out the middleman and remove 6 zeroes? It'll save them removing 3 more in a month. That gives them more time to stand in lines for bread and toilet paper...because they're in such good shape.

7/31/2018 09:40:00 AM

(7/31/2018 09:37:00 AM) - Al

Nats' GM Mike Rizzo just said he believes in the team, and Bryce Harper is not moving.

7/31/2018 09:37:00 AM

(7/31/2018 09:31:00 AM) - Al

MLBN is almost unwatchable.

Nothing but cliches and fictional superlatives. Every game is a great game. Every player is a great player. Every guy is a great guy. Pure pain.

(7/31/2018 09:30:00 AM) - Al

I did not make a note of who said it, but yesterday, a young woman on Twitter told the tale of when she was 7 or 8, she loudly yelled/sang at a family picnic of her very conservative family, including an extremely conservative grandmother, "Save a horse, ride a cowboy!"

Years later, folks still can't believe granny did not drop dead on the spot.

The president's approval is up to 48%, 3-5 points higher than the same time of Obama's presidency.

Rasmussen emails this to me every day. It's been between 43 and 49 for months (of course, I realize, that's not a tiny gap...but over the course of several months, it's not much bounce either).

As Instapundit pointed out about a year ago, the old media's insistence that no one likes the president is their way of saying the old media does not like him. Remember, they have never talked to people that do not live in DC/NY/LA. About 2/3rd's of the nation's media live in those 3 places.

7/31/2018 08:53:00 AM

(7/31/2018 08:30:00 AM) - Al

As many others have said, in 50-100 years, business textbooks will still refer to how badly the NFL botched the anthem issue. All they ahd to do was enforce the rule they had on the books, which about 3/4th's of the public agrees with...and they're still too lily livered to do so.

Instead, they are still allowing the inmates to run the asylum.

It's simply astounding.

(7/31/2018 01:26:00 AM) - Al

Hader and Soria will probably be down tomorrow, but everyone else should be ok, barring injury, of course.

That's pretty good considering 2 straight games of 4 innings from the SP.

13.5 K/9 for Knebel?

After Hader's otherworldly numbers, that doesn't even seem that high.

(7/31/2018 12:37:00 AM) - Al

I admit, I'm jealous.

EDIT: Rumor has 1 of the 2 prospects is very, very good.  Kela has 3 years of team control.

EDIT: 2 PTBNL? They are rarely top guys, though anyone on the 40 can be one. Mike Brantley was the last really good one I recall.

EDIT 3: Not really PTBNL, they just are having trouble reaching the playrs involved. Will announce tomorrow, per Rosenthal.

7/30/2018 11:44:00 PM

(7/30/2018 11:11:00 PM) - Al

I've spent much of my time on Twitter blocking people who either don't know what players have value or for some reason, think proposing stupid one sided trades are funny.

7/30/2018 11:11:00 PM

(7/30/2018 10:49:00 PM) - Al

Red Sox trade for Ian Kinsler.

He's a rental, so I assume it took very little.

Dozier and Gennett still on the market as 2B.

EDIT: Sox send their 19 and 23 prospects for him from a below average system. Better than nothing for the Angels.

EDIT 2: Angels paying most of his $3.7M salary he has left this season, so they are clearly in full sell mode. Tyler Skaggs has 3 years of team control after this one, so they would want the world for him.

7/30/2018 10:49:00 PM

(7/30/2018 10:25:00 PM) - Al

If this is a negotiating tactic, it's brilliant.

I love these roasts.

I love them even more because so many people are offended by them.

DVR'd the Bruce Willis one last night, will maybe watch tomorrow during the deadline countdown.

7/30/2018 10:16:00 PM

(7/30/2018 10:06:00 PM) - Al

The Braves acquired Adam Duvall from the Reds for Matt Wisler, Lucas Sims and Preston

Reds have lots of pieces to deal, if they choose to, they could rebuild very quickly, especially if they focus on AA/AAA talent. They have about 5 relievers and a couple SP's, as well as Scooter.

Many pointing out the Osuna situation is similar to Chapman. NYY did not mind trading for him and then getting 2-3 times the return from the Cubs, and the Cubs did not mind winning the World Series with him. Heck, the Yankees did not mind signing him again either.

I know it's like the "in thing" to overreact about everything, but by doing so, you just prove you're a snowflake. Grow up. Life happens. I guarantee you almost no one would like their worst day to become public knowledge. I've worked with so many people who have had DWI's, I almost am surprised when someone doesn't. I don't turn up my nose and tell them they should not be allowed to work with me.

You cannot deny a person work because of a conviction or a charge. That's the law. If you try and justify doing so, you're no better than the criminal. The Rambling son started a job today at a retailer and he has no idea if any of the people he's working with was charged with or convicted of a crime a week ago, 10 years ago, whatever. I have a friend who is currently charged with a crime in GA.

I had to refax my reference letter about them today at my credit union, because their case was assigned to a new lawyer, and the public defender did not bother giving it to them (our tax dollars at work). I have no idea if they are guilty of the crime or not. I know they told me they are not. I do know they have every right to fight it, using every thing at their disposal, including a letter from me.

By the way, if you ever have to write such a thing, thank goodness for Google. I doubnt if an example of that is in the English Handbook of Writing a professor was giving away outside their office in college. I've used that book 20 times over the years.

I'd a lot rather explain that Osuna has served his punishment that have to explain why I traded an effective closer at his lowest value for a guy who has not only been awful, but has been unable to control himself or even pretend to care about his team.

I know some folks want to punish anyone accused of or convicted of a crime or a non PC happening for life, but that's not the way it works. If you can work at Subway or Kwik Trip, you can play MLB.

Robinson Chirinos is the only C I can see, other than Wilson Ramos (who is injured right now), that would be a sizable offensive upgrade...unless DET is willing to discuss John Hicks, or CSW wants to deal Omar Naverez (who is weak defensively) who are not rentals.

Assuming Realmuto is too spendy in prospect cost, I see a very minor upgrade, if any. Ramos would be an interesting gamble, I believe players on the DL have been dealt before, but I think the commissioner's office has to approve. His value may be artificially low due to his injury.

I'm not sure what is meant by this, but here you go.

Reports today indicate Crew is looking for a SP and a catcher. That would not seem to be a surprise to anyone, but I think it's obvious they would like to keep Kratz in AAA and bring him back in SEP. He's the epitome of a gritty veteran and is a nice guy to have around.

By the way, I would assume they would love to pair Pina with a LH hitting C that is an average defender or better.

Sonny Gray makes a lot of sense to me. He's been great on the road and terrible at home since being traded. He is small town TN boy, not being suited for NY would not be a surprise. That short RF porch may bother him too, maybe mentally.

My sleeper, I may have mentioned before, I can't recall...Gio Gonzalez of the Nats. Tanner Roark or Jeremy Hellickson would be good fits too.

Will DC sell? I dunno. They are just as close to MIA and NYM as they are to the playoffs. They'd have to go 36-21 to win 88, a winning percentage well over 60%...and through just short of 2/3rds of the season, they are under .500. They should, because having a remote chance at a one game playoff is foolhardy and math ignorant. But they may not.

7/29/2018 02:01:00 PM

(7/29/2018 01:48:00 PM) - Al

I just realized Phillips and Lopez were both on the 40 man, so the 40 man roster was at 40, and lost them and Phillips, while adding Moustakas, so it stands at 38. So, there's no reason worrying about Suter to the 60, at least for now. Things like that may come up later, for example, if they choose to add a PR like Billy Hamilton Quintin Berry to the mix in SEP (after all, QB has been in the system all season, hitting badly and playing some OF, so I assume they want to use him in SEP).

And yes, I do think some team will trade a middling prospect for Hamilton, who, despite his warts, is a PR weapon in SEP and the postseason. BH is a very mediocre starting CF, but I do believe, used properly, is one of the very few players who is worth more than his numbers suggest. However, as a 4th OF/utility guy (remember, he came up as a SS, if he could play 2B or SS or 3B, he's be a very valuable reserve), he does. Problem? Most players want to play as much as possible, though I suppose he could be drawn into a winning situation if he was paid accordingly.

The actual crime here is having to wait 4 years for a trial.

Anything over 90 days should be automatically dismissed. That would get more judges, DA's, and PD's hired very quickly, and also far more of a "sense of urgency" for an incredibly underworked and overpaid part of society.

This would also not allow incessant delays by the defense designed just to hope witnesses move away, die, or otherwise disappear. Defense delays would not count toward the 90 days.

They wouldn't do it if it didn't work.

I realize casual fans do not understand math, but by staying at 3B, a team has no chance of scoring, barring an error, of course. By going on contact, you make the other team make a play. You're basically just saying you're going to be aggressive.

It's actually a lot like sending a runner home from 3B. You should get runners thrown out at the plate, with 2 outs, quite a bit actually. With 2 outs, you need a hit (or 3 walks) to score a run. The odds of that is almost always under 30%. So if your runner makes it home a third of the time, it's a good move.

Casuals don't get it. That's ok. It helps me separate them from the ones I pay attention to. Every time some 28 year old hits .280 at Colorado Springs, they start insisting they're better than Thames.

No. No they are not.

Brewers DFA Miller instead of optioning him. Maybe he had too much service time and only agreed to go down to get some reps in at SS.

Broxton also goes down to make room for Albers.

As for needing a 40 man spot for Moustakas, they could have just put Suter on the 60 day DL. Maybe they just thought it was better for Brad and did not foresee him returning, even if an injury happens.

7/28/2018 02:28:00 PM

(7/28/2018 02:24:00 PM) - Al

I think the Crew will add another SP (or swingman). The ones that are out there now all seem to have teams overvaluing them, at least compared to what Stearns feels they are worth. I see his point, as Woodruff would probably put up a 4-4.50 ERA if he was called up, and Wilkerson might as well. Hence, there isn't much use trading for a guy who would put up similar numbers. Now with Davies back on the rehab trail, there may be a slight amount less, even.

Therefore, we might well see a true "deadline" deal made, as teams come back to the Brewers after failing to get what they want.

While my first thought is, "that's a shame," this could be the way a 3rd party emerges.

I still feel we'll see a "social libertarian, financially conservative party emerge, but when I was 18, I thought it would happen in the next 50 years, and I'm not sure anymore. The best opportunity for this to happen, as I said then, was to have a celebrity or a well known politician start it or jump to it early.

Looking back, the best chance of this happening was almost certainly Donald Trump.

7/28/2018 02:10:00 PM

(7/28/2018 01:59:00 PM) - Al

This is something conservatives need to do ASAP. I use the word "successful" rather than wealthy or rich.

It's not always accurate, as some people (heck, even me) choose to not work at as high a paying job that we could, because of work/life balance and the fact that some of us would rather spend our limited time on the planet not working 60 hours a week. Heck, over the years in retail, I had many college grads working PT for the same reasons.

Still, we should not punish those who work hard and have success. People do not make $150K a year because they were born rich. Yes, that makes it easier, I suppose, but as I have learned from the Rambling wife going back to school, even "middle class" people qualify for tons of grants so college is either free or inexpensive.

Because I am a proud contrarian, I rarely ask the common questions. I already talked about the defensive switch of Shaw, as I feel he will be fine, but below average overall, as he will lack range. The braintrust is hoping the improved offense makes up for it.

So, since I rarely discuss the obvious, I will ask this: Everyone expects Stearns to trade for a SP or swingman before the deadline. So, if he does not, or he makes more than that trade, what other positions  do you see him wanting to improve?

To me, an improvement at C would be the easiest, except that if you can find a good  catcher that's available, a trade that does not involve your first born or the family jewels is unheard of.

I could still imagine a SS, especially a rental, and even more so if said SS was flexible enough to play other infield positions effectively. This player could start most games at SS and then slide over to 2B after Shaw hits late.

Maybe a loogy or a veteran LH reliever, but that seems like an AUG type deal. Maybe moving an OF to a team that has a greater need?

Moustakas is in New York. Will he show up by tomorrow night? I would think not, but he could be on a plane in a couple hours, if he wishes. He is a good offensive player, but much like Schoop, he is a low OBP, high SLG guy, last 3 years, .311/.500, career .306/.430.

Mike is better versus RHP, but is respectable versus LHP (career 754 OPS vs. RHP and 690 vs. LHP).

Lopez looks like he will have a career as a useful middle reliever, but as I have pointed out, he will be out of options next season, so if he does not stick, or just goes into a slump, he will have to be exposed to waivers.

Phillips is a nice complimentary piece, can play all 3 OF spots, nice LH bat. He has a bit of a loopy long swing, so might be a bit of a tweener, stuck in a platoon/reserve role. Sure will miss that arm.

Is it a lot for a rental? Depends how one looks at it. Neither player is likely to be an above average major leaguer...but young average big leaguers are worth A LOT. Lopez might end up as a top set up man or closer (though I doubt it). Phillips might be an everyday OF for several seasons (again, I doubt it, but he could).

They dealt from depth...Cain and Yelich are not going anywhere, and Braun seems locked in for a couple more years, at least. Minor league OF's are loaded. Lopez is one of a dozen guys who look to assume bullpen roles. I would say he is a young Anthony Swarzak, a player who struggled a bit early but eventually became a contributor.

Moustakas is known as a standout fielder, but his metrics are only solid, +16 UZR and +10 DRS over a career of about 900 games, only worth a couple runs to the good a year.

How will Shaw be at 2B? At first glance, he would seem to have good hands and limited range. He has a superb arm for 2B, so in theory, he should be fine as a cutoff man. Turning 2 will probably be below average, though when he has done it on the shift, he has been very good.

I must admit, I do love the out of the box attitude. As I talked about earlier today, this is the best defensive club in baseball by most metrics, so weakening 2B, in theory, should not be a devastating move. I would assume Perez or Saladino will come into play 2B much of the time late in the game. I would also assume Brad Miller will be the odd man out.  I don't see them going with only 7 relievers at all the rest of the way.

Counsell expects Moustakas SAT night. Shaw will begin playing 2B, but Craig said Moustakas is also open to it, so it appears Stearns has already chatted with him.

Counsell also did not confirm Albers would be activated because "we got a couple things going on."

ADDED: Like Soria, this is not a strict rental. He has a mutual option for $15M for next season, or a $1M buyout. No one has any idea if he will like MIL, or even consider coming back, but it's not necessarily a one and done.

Brewers acquire Moustakas for Phillips and Lopez.

Stearns runs the risk of being mocked mercilessly depending on how Shae does at 2B, but never say he's overly cautious.

No idea if it's true or not, but many Orioles' fans insist Schoop was playing hurt when he struggled in the first half.

Funny, for some reason the old media decided not to cover this.

Rumors flying around internet. More on Moustakas than BAL at the moment.

One person claiming Phillips has been informed sit tight and wait for news, might be as far as waiting for final paperwork.

Royals were rained out tonight, so no hints there.

7/27/2018 09:23:00 PM

(7/27/2018 09:19:00 PM) - Al

Rosenthal says Phillips is rumored to be in Royals' talks about Moustakas.

That might explain why Schoop is still playing, and that the BAL talk is regarding Gausman.

(7/27/2018 09:07:00 PM) - Al

All this talk about Phillips being scratched because of a trade, but Schoop is still in the game as I type, in the 5th inning.  Is he not involved, or is the trade not as far along as some think.

Brett Phillips pulled from AAA game.

Being called up to replace Cain on roster?

Tummy is bothering him, afraid he might soil himself?

Time will tell.

EDIT: I just checked the box score and he did not start tonight, so I am not sure if he was in the original lineup or what? But "pulled" is probably not the proper term. He was either "scratched" or "replaced."

Rosenthal reports Brewers and Orioles in "serious" trade talks.

One would assume Schoop is involved, and/or quite possibly a SP such as Gausman (or Bundy, but he's not being talked about).

EDIT: I have been saying proposed trades would not involve Hiura, Burnes, and Peralta, and Ray was very unlikely.

I will not say that with this deal. If they would get both, that's a blockbuster. BAL has been taking quantity, but they'd end up with 3-5 solid prospects if both were involved.

7/27/2018 06:31:00 PM

(7/27/2018 06:14:00 PM) - Al

Cain out tonight, hopefully minor injury from sliding last night. LHP tonight, so a RH heavy lineup.

I had actually forgot about Dietrich. His defense is not as bad as some have said, as he is a -5 UZR in just over a season worth of innings at 2B. However, he's -19 in DRS. Which do you believe?

I have always understood that UZR ignores defensive shifts and DRS uses it. Teams that shift a lot, like MIL, tend to have better DRS than UZR.

For example, the Brewers rank #1 in DRS in MLB, +83 runs. They also rank #1 using UZR, but it's only a +25. They also rank 1st in defensive efficiency, which is just math, it measures how many balls are put into play and how many outs a team gets on them.

The irony? I've never heard the TV team mention any of these. I guess they're really not talking to us.

7/27/2018 06:13:00 PM

(7/27/2018 05:41:00 PM) - Al

I agree with the gist of this, though depth has value too. That said, I don't see much "depth" I would take over Woodruff.

The one thing we do not know is, what other SP's may be avilable before the deadline. Right now, I agree, Gibson and Wheeler are the class of the current crop. However, just as Bryce Harper or Daniel Murphy may become available at any moment, others might as well. I could imagine a scenario in which Tanner Roarke was shopped, for example. Gio Gonzalez as well. At some point, the Mets might talk check the market on Steven Matz.

But as of today, Wheeler and Gibson are the cream of the crop.

I saw an ad last night for Roys for the first time, as I live in Marathon County, which is a bellweather and closely contested area. Also, it's in the Wausau TV market, which covers central WI and northern WI.

I was amazed how it was, basically, 100% on abortion. It was very close to a celebration of abortion. I'm pro choice before the 5-6 month mark, though I'm morally opposed. However, I would never tell anyone how great it is.

This link says her other ads, are, to be fair, like me talking about my single days.

Royals' fans pointing out Merrifield and Duffy are far better than Wheeler and Cabrera, and have far more team control.

Royals' owner just said Whit is not going anywhere for now. Players like him, Chris Archer, and the like...basically are far more likely to be moved in the offseason, as players on the 25 man roster will have to be involved.

Greg Holland DFA'd.

2 things here.

1. I just saw someone suggest the Crew trade for Holland this morning.

2. Holland has been very good since JUN1, except for one terrible outing in which he gave up 5 two out runs in a low leverage situation. Other than that, he has a 2.31 ERA and 10 K's versus 5 walks in 11 IP.

This almost seems like a punishment rather than a strategic move. Someone will certainly give him a chance, though he may need to go to the minors for a week or two.

(7/27/2018 10:20:00 AM) - Al

Aung has been correct before.

There's nothing saying MIL has to do a package type deal. However, if they do, the Twins and Mets both make perfect sense. Sadly, the price on Gibson probably went up after last night.

Also, we have heard next to nothing about a potential Steven Matz acquisition. Matz has 3 years of team control left and while he has not been healthy in his career, has been very effective. Not sure if they would include Hiura in a deal for Matz, but NYM could get 3-4 very quality youngsters for Matz and Cabrera.

That was, to say the least, rather subdued booing for Hader. Barely audible on TV. In fact, if you would not have known, you might have missed it entirely.

(7/26/2018 11:01:00 PM) - Al

I have to laugh at the casuals that don't seem to understand we're seeing the bullpen's role change right before our eyes this season. Many folks seem stuck in the 70's and 80's, severely underestimating how important it is to have more than 2-3 good relievers.

The irony? Many of them also complained about Tayler Williams pitching important innings a few games ago...but only when ineffective, of course. No one said a word when he started the 10th in TUE's walk off victory.

It's easy to run a bullpen when you say would only bring in guys who did not give up a run.

That would seemingly have the potential to be a very good relief corps, if they remain healthy and stay effective. If they all can avoid the DL, we might see Jacob and Taylor splitting time between Colorado Springs and Milwaukee until SEP.

If they do acquire a SP, it could push Peralta to AAA, as I doubt they would pitch him out of the bullpen.

More importantly, it means Counsell can be aggressive as early as the 4th/5th inning. If they do make the postseason, this could be a shutdown group that can throw 6-7 innings one day and be fresh the next.

Brewers will have to clear a 25 man roster spot and a 40 man spot for Soria...they have to clear the 40 man when the trade is announced, but the 25 man spot can wait until Soria reports.

(7/26/2018 12:26:00 PM) - Al

BREAKING: Brewers acquire Soria.

Updates to follow.

ADDED: Soria is not a pure rental, as he has a $10M option for next season. Given Stearns' ability to put a bullpen together on the cheap, I assume he's looking at it at a rental.

ADDED: Since May 21, Soria has allowed two runs in 24.1 IP, a 0.74 ERA. Brewers getting solid addition for their

To me that says he's healthy and pitching well. I admit, part of me says he is due for some bad luck.

ADDED 2: White Sox getting Kodi Medeiros as part of the package. Kodi is a former 1st round pick, though he was taken as a money saving option. He is still very young, but most feel he will end up as a reliever.  He also has to be added to the 40 this winter.

TRADE COMPLETE: Soria for Medeiros and Wilber Perez.

I do not know Perez, but word is, he has a talking horse.

ADDED 3: Perez is a 20 year old who was pitching effectively in the Dominican Summer League. He's got a live arm, basically a lottery ticket.

ADDED 4: The reason I mention the 40 man is that several young players (I would have said 5-7, now 4-6) have to be added this offseason. Like the Yankees, they may be trading some rather than risk losing them in the Rule 5.

ADDED 5: Kodi was #13 on the Brewers' top 30, which just had a midseason shuffle, and is much more up to date. I'd say they are about 20-22 deep in "true" prospects.

JA Happ
Bartolo Colon
Doug Fister
Matt Harvey
Tyson Ross
Lance Lynn
Mike Fiers (could be offered arby for 2019)

There you go, a quick list of rentals available, based more on the teams that are selling than anything else.

And yes, it's a pretty unspectacular list. Happ, Ross and Fiers are light years ahead of the others, though Harvey has been better out of NY.

I admit, I like Fister more than most because of his experience starting and relieving, as well as the fact he has been very good away from the offensive environment of Arlington. However, he will probably be out until early-mid AUG, so he would probably be an August trade candidate.

This is pretty much how everyone I know feels.

The sympathy for people that make terrible life choices is very limited here in flyover country. Yes, it's a shame young people do drugs. I have immense sympathy for her family. That said, we lose people every day to cancer, auto accidents, and oodles of things.

Walk up to the parents of a military person who was killed during a training exercise, which in the current era, is more likely than to be killed in combat; and say, "Damn shame about that Demi Lavato, huh?" I would assume the response is not what you think. Odds are, they'll feel it's very unfair a drug addict with immense wealth and fame survived, while their patriotic child looking to protect their country and get the GI Bill did not.

I'm not saying that's right at all.

But I understand.

Davies will get an MRI on his back, out indefinitely.

Woodruff will go back in the rotation at AAA. The, it's Asher and Wilkerson. Aaron Brooks has had a quietly effective season in Colorado Springs as well, but would have to go back on the 40.

All winter, the casuals post their rotation of 5, and I say you have to have at least 10, and they ask why. Life happens.

On the bright side, it happened before the trade deadline. Better now than AUG2. Also, I like Woodruff every bit as much as guys like Matt Harvey.

Allow me to say the Twins' inclusion on this list is very funny.

I forget the actual number, but teams that are more than 5 games out of a playoff spot at the all star break make the playoffs less than 5% of the time.

Granted, MIN could win 12 in a row and be right back in it. Banking on that is fool's gold, however. As the Brewers found out in 2016, giving more playing time to your youngsters is a good thing for many reasons.

Problem is, he's very similar of Brad Miller, both play 1B/2B, both hit RHP far better than LHP, both can play 3B.

Hard to believe the Tribe would not have some interest in Broxton or Santana.

Field is, at best, a guy who has a .300 OBP in AAA that can play some defense. Of course, CLE would probably not have much desire to trade off any major league talent. That said, with Yelich/Cain/Braun/Thames in the mix, how many OF's do they need?

(7/24/2018 01:47:00 PM) - Al

The Brewers' rotation, especially their tendency to have 4-6 inning starts, is exactly why I feel Stearns will add to the bullpen.

Not sure if it will be Britton, but when your SP's often leave the bullpen with 9+ outs, you need a ,lot of bodies, especially in AUG (in SEP, with the 40 man roster, they will need "quality" as the quantity is unimportant...everyone will have that).

Trey Supak quickly working his way into true prospect status. Pitched 8 innings, allowed 2 hits last night.

The irony? He was the main part of the Jason Rogers trade years ago. Broxton was a throw in because the Pirates did not have room for him on the 40 man roster.

Blue Jays trying to deal Happ and relievers before expected JUL31 glut of moves, per Joel Sherman.

There are several solid relievers in TOR, including Aaron Loup, who has been an effective loogy for his entire career, and is a FA after the season. He'd be an under the radar pickup, allowing Hadar and Jennings to be used in 1-2 inning stints, while Loup would just face a lefty batter or two.

The Brewers almost acquired Drury in the offseason. They have been linked to Sonny Gray.

The thing is, what would the Brewers be able to give the Yankees? They will not want minor leaguers, they will want major league ready players to help them in 2018 and the future. Would Santana and/or Broxton have any appeal? Would any of the pitchers on the Colorado Springs/Milwaukee shuttle firt in here?

Is Matt Harvey better than any of the Brewers' SP's? Or, even their 6th/7th options, like Woodruff?

This is why I do not understand why Harvey would have much appeal to them. Would they use him in the bullpen? Who would he replace in the rotation? Would they go with a 6 man rotation?

Seem to be hearing this "Sonny Gray to MIL" rumor a lot, and from many different voices.

EDIT: For those wondering, it's not going to happen unless NYY acquires another SP to take his spot.

EDIT 2: An interesting option available cheap would be Neil Walker, who was so good last season in MIL, who has struggled in NY, but has hit better as the season has went on...and even his year long numbers versus RHP are not much worse than the Crew's 2B (Walker 613 OPS vs. MIL's 642).

We get most of our beef for a pittance from the Rambling inlaws, but I would bet this "stockpile" would dissipate very quickly if I ever saw a decent steak in the grocery store for under $10.

I used to buy "cheap" roasts often and make them in the slow cooker, because that makes the cheapest, toughest cuts extremely tender. Now, I almost always stick to pork, as it's a bargain by comparison.

Morosi says Brewers still considering Mike Moustakas, even though they are "not an ideal fit." Shaw would move to 2B in this scenario.

Never say Stearns is not willing to think out of the box. I'm not a big Merrifield fan due to his inability to hit RHP at a higher level. Likewise, I'm not a big Moustakas fan due to his mediocre OBP. Both, however, would improve the '18 Brewers, offensively at least.

By the way, I'm not saying spellcheck is crap, but it marked Moustakas in the second paragraph, but not the first.

This is why the old media is so desperate to insist a peaceful meeting with the 2nd strongest nation in the world was a failure. What? Highest ever? That's not the message the old media keeps sending.

I guess, a stronger president, you know, a better leader, would have whispered into a hot mic he'd have more flexibility after the election. Or just sent them pallets of cash, because he's so damn much more intelligent than us rubes.

The interwebs are full of rumors about a Wheeler/Cabrera tandem coming to the Brewers, with an OF (Santana or Phillips) going back, along with other prospect(s) and international signing money.

Is there any truth to it? Well, makes sense, especially with Suter going down today. Wheeler is not a rental, as he is under team control until after the 2019 season.

Heyman adds the Brewers to the list of teams interested in Britton, or who have at least asked about him.

He has been excellent in July, shaking off the rust he had accumulated. His velocity is down 2-3 mph on both his pitches, though maybe that's returning a bit as well.

I consider him a huge injury risk, but he is only signed through this season, so whoever gets him is only responsible for about $4.25M he's owed for '18.

7/22/2018 03:49:00 PM

(7/22/2018 03:30:00 PM) - Al

Schoop is a strange name to be associated with Stearns for many reasons, as he's not speedy, not versatile, and his value is built on SLG, not OBP...not to mention, he's been awful this season, after a tremendous '17. He's also been better versus RHP than LHP his whole career.

Much of that can be associated with his BAbip (.255 TY versus .330 LY). Maybe the analytics department thinks it's the result of bad luck more than a reduction in what he has done, I dunno.

Heck, maybe BAL thinks he has negative value and would ask for less for a SP if a team took Schoop.

(7/22/2018 03:15:00 PM) - Al

Williams was babied heavily in the first half, always given extra days off and never used on consecutive days.

He's probably just suffering from a bit of dead arm and that previously nearly unhittable slider is suddenly just another pitch. Given the situation and a need for rest, might well see him DL'd along with Suter, or just sent down on paper to give him 10 days off.
