Al's Ramblings

(8/31/2018 11:37:00 PM) - Al

Bethancourt played at AAA tonight, Bandy did not.

I assume Jett will be joining the team tomorrow, assuming of course they add a 3rd C.

Knebel got his first appearance in, 1 inning, 1 hot, 1 walk, 1 K, 0 runs. He will probably return soon, as early as SUN.

I would expect Woodruff, Houser, Saladino, Santana and probably Bandy to join the team tomorrow; with Broxton, Davies, Knebel, and Peralta being added soon...along with Granderson, Gonzalez, and Cedeno. That would be 33 tomorrow, and 37 in a few days.

That would leave Nottingham, Diplan, and Wilkerson as the only 3 not up, along with the guys on the 60 day DL.

8/31/2018 11:37:00 PM

(8/31/2018 11:19:00 PM) - Al

Counsell does not commit to using Gio as a SP.

I still think his best role would be as a long man to face mostly LH's. Someone struggles early, gives up some runs, they could use someone to get through that inning, PH if necessary, and then bring him in to start the inning, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, whatever, go until it makes sense to take him out, and give him 2-3 days off and do it again.

EDIT: Arnold seems to verify they do not plan to just put him into the rotation and let him start every 5th day.

8/31/2018 11:19:00 PM

(8/31/2018 11:15:00 PM) - Al

Aaron Brooks and Jake Thompson DFA'd. I would expect both to be claimed and added to a team's major league roster. I can hope I'm incorrect.

Probably be one more tomorrow if a 3rd C is brought up.

FYI, Brooks was paid about $5700 for being on the Crew's roster, but not pitching, the last 2 days. Good work if you can get it.

8/31/2018 11:15:00 PM

(8/31/2018 11:00:00 PM) - Al

Fake news problems.

8/31/2018 11:00:00 PM

(8/31/2018 10:23:00 PM) - Al

Crew picks up Granderson as well.

That's 3 from the 40 man that will have to be DFA'd or outrighted (Gio, Curtis, and either Bandy/Bethancourt). Surprising none were traded; the clubs simply must not have had a match.

8/31/2018 10:23:00 PM

(8/31/2018 09:44:00 PM) - Al

Granderson has not been mentioned at all today since Rosenthal's rumor this AM. Still an hour plus to go, but it's hard to believe TOR would keep him and pass on a couple prospects.

8/31/2018 09:44:00 PM

(8/31/2018 09:00:00 PM) - Al

Scumbags. With bias.

8/31/2018 09:00:00 PM

(8/31/2018 08:28:00 PM) - Al

Brewers will have to clear a spot on the 40 for Gio, and at least one more, for that 3rd C.

8/31/2018 08:28:00 PM

(8/31/2018 08:23:00 PM) - Al

Certainly not top prospects for Gio, but more than I would have liked to have seen. Must have been a other decent offers they had to beat.

8/31/2018 08:23:00 PM

(8/31/2018 06:02:00 PM) - Al

Gio nets the Nats 2 minor leaguers, which is 1-2 more than he's worth.

8/31/2018 06:02:00 PM

(8/31/2018 05:59:00 PM) - Al

Brewers acquire Gio, per Rosenthal.

8/31/2018 05:59:00 PM

(8/31/2018 05:44:00 PM) - Al

Rumor has the A's or Brewers acquiring Gio.

He was good in JUL but weak in AUG. I only see him having success if used as a long reliever, maybe to come in 4th or 5th inning and get some outs versus mostly LH's.

He went 7 innings and gave up a single run twice in AUG, and was awful in his other 4, never going more than 5 frames and always giving up 5 runs. Basically, you'd just be trading for his past success and hoping for the best.

8/31/2018 05:44:00 PM

(8/31/2018 05:34:00 PM) - Al

Those that wonder why the Badgers are never ranked in the top 5 and rarely mentioned for the national championship playoff unless undefeated, look no further than being a 35 point favorite versus Western Kentucky tonight.

I understand they don't want to play a top 10 team. I also understand scheduling a team like WK is as gutless as it gets.

8/31/2018 05:34:00 PM

(8/31/2018 04:15:00 PM) - Al

Two minor moves, probably for the AAA playoffs, though Nottingham could end up in MIL in SEP if healthy.

8/31/2018 04:15:00 PM

(8/31/2018 04:01:00 PM) - Al

Matt Arnold says team will use Cedeno at any time in game, including possibly as a situational lefty. May allow Hader and Jennings to be used for other purposes.

Said team still talking to several clubs, nothing imminent.

Orf and Hernandez both outrighted to AAA, so both cleared waivers.

8/31/2018 04:01:00 PM

(8/31/2018 04:00:00 PM) - Al

I still remember the left's argument.

Well, we don't know for sure they hacked her server loaded with classified information she so stupidly used.

When that's the best you got, you already lost.

8/31/2018 04:00:00 PM

(8/31/2018 03:53:00 PM) - Al

One of my favorite sayings over the years is, "no matter how long the long weekend, people always like taking a day off on either side of it (usually before) and make it an even longer weekend."

22 people work in the Rambling wife's office. 6 were there yesterday and today.

8/31/2018 03:53:00 PM

(8/31/2018 03:49:00 PM) - Al

Better than nothing.

8/31/2018 03:49:00 PM

(8/31/2018 03:30:00 PM) - Al

I currently actually own a peloton bike.  I love it.  The ability to connect it to gps and basically ride the hills or lack of on actual roads in your area is kinda cool.  I agree it is just an exercise bike in the end.  Yet I can go ride the hills of the alps from my home and not have to travel (which i dispise).   Keep up the great work Al and go Brewers.

Nathan

If you have the money, I bet it's a really nice exercise bike. And, I bet ya Nathan is in a helluva lot better shape than me.

8/31/2018 03:30:00 PM

(8/31/2018 03:28:00 PM) - Al

Nate Orf outrighted off 40 man to make room for Cedeno.

We'll see if that means he has to clear waivers or already did.

8/31/2018 03:28:00 PM

(8/31/2018 03:17:00 PM) - Al

Good.

Biden, Kerry, and Hillary slugging it out in primaries.

8/31/2018 03:17:00 PM

(8/31/2018 03:00:00 PM) - Al

Unexpectedly.

Somewhere, Obama is smoking 4 cigarettes at a time, wondering why taking more money from those who earned it and enforcing stifling regulations didn't work.

8/31/2018 03:00:00 PM

(8/31/2018 02:56:00 PM) - Al

I assume Cedeno will not make it to DC in time for the game, but I believe the Crew has to make room for him on the 40 man right away.

8/31/2018 02:56:00 PM

(8/31/2018 02:50:00 PM) - Al

Brewers acquire LH reliever from White Sox.

He's had a good season, and has been equally effective versus LH's and RH's, though some of that would seem to be luck based. Has been a bit wild, but has a lot of K's also. Will be arby eligible this offseason.

8/31/2018 02:50:00 PM

(8/31/2018 02:30:00 PM) - Al

I agree completely.

If you recall, McCain was far too old in '08, but since then, the old media insists every seat be filled by someone almost as old as McCain was when he passed.

I think it's directly related to the fact Hillary was so old in '16. They got so used to insisting she was not too old, it's affected their judgement.

8/31/2018 02:30:00 PM

(8/31/2018 02:18:00 PM) - Al

Of course he was.

The only corruption is on Mueller's side.

8/31/2018 02:18:00 PM

(8/31/2018 02:00:00 PM) - Al

Because their checks are larger.

Duh.

Funny how that works.

8/31/2018 02:00:00 PM

(8/31/2018 01:30:00 PM) - Al

Two thoughts

1. Whenever "French" and "fighting" are in the same sentence, the outcome is predetermined. All I know is, I bet the English dudes caught a lot of seafood, and the French fellas pouted a lot that evening while complaining to their mistress.

2. Also, I'm suddenly hungry for scallops.

8/31/2018 01:30:00 PM

(8/31/2018 01:07:00 PM) - Al

I'll just throw this out as a placeholder if nothing else...if we do trades, part of the return will probably be off the current 40 man roster, as those players have value, and will have to be DFA'd regardless.

Broxton, Orf, Diplan, Saladino, Wilkerson, and Brooks probably most at risk. Houser might be thrown in there as well, as he does not have an option for 2019.

8/31/2018 01:07:00 PM

(8/31/2018 01:03:00 PM) - Al

Jason sends in this article and asks if it's the beginnings of "overheating" talk among the old media.

Note that many of these nations are said to be hurting in part due to tariffs, but the USA is booming.

8/31/2018 01:03:00 PM

(8/31/2018 12:47:00 PM) - Al

Good old Bill.

8/31/2018 12:47:00 PM

(8/31/2018 12:17:00 PM) - Al

Brewers talking to Blue Jays about Curtis Granderson, who has cleared waivers. Supposedly a wonderful guy and would be used as a LH bench bat. That said, anyone who understands math knows how little a player who would get maybe 40-50 PA's could add to a team...even a plus player would only add 2-3 runs of value, which, using the Rule of 10, would amount to 0.2 or 0.3 extra wins.

That said, I like the idea more than adding a SP like Gio Gonzalez, who is probably not as good as Davies or Woodruff (and one could argue Wilkerson or Brooks). Of course, the hope is that acquisition would "get hot" like Cole Hamels has for the Cubs...but, in a small sample, that player could just as easily slump (as Schoop did in his slow start in MIL, but has been fine of late).

8/31/2018 12:17:00 PM

(8/31/2018 11:30:00 AM) - Al

Follow them while you're there. If you like laughing at stupid people.

8/31/2018 11:30:00 AM

(8/31/2018 10:30:00 AM) - Al

My first thought?

This is like getting in a time machine and going back to meet Front Row Amy when she was in college.

8/31/2018 10:30:00 AM

(8/31/2018 09:00:00 AM) - Al

I meant to link this a couple days ago, but anything I read on my phone often gets forgotten. MLB defensive positions are soon becoming unimportant.

Good to see the Brewers on the forefront of this, as they were among the first to use the full scale defensive shifts, along with the Rays. Now, everyone does it, and only casuals complain about it.

It's just math.

On a related note, I remember back when I played slow pitch softball, there was always a team made up of "old guys*" that played most every weekend. I would not even have noticed them except my middle school health and PE teacher played 2B most of the time. He always would say, "Hey Bethke," and I would respond "Hi Coach," when one of us ended up at 2B, as I always played 2B or SS.

{Yes, I had above average communication skills even in my early 20's.}

They were all overweight, ran very slowly, and struggled to make anything but the routine play.**

Yet, they always hit the ball hard and made the routine play, and made the money every time I saw them play. There's a lesson to be learned there.

*I realize now they were about the age I am today.

**Again, the similarity to modern me is very, very high.

8/31/2018 09:00:00 AM

(8/31/2018 07:30:00 AM) - Al

I must admit, you wonder how out of touch celebs are when they post back to school pictures of their previously never seen children.

They overestimate the appeal of their offspring. No one goes to a movie or concert and thinks, "I wonder what backpack their 4th grader has?"

8/31/2018 07:30:00 AM

(8/31/2018 05:00:00 AM) - Al

I don't mean to be, you know, realistic and common sensical and all, but how long is it after the younger, in better shape, and far cooler people than me buy a Peloton do they realize they paid $2500 for an exercise bike?

Just curious.

8/31/2018 05:00:00 AM

(8/31/2018 03:00:00 AM) - Al

Why do we notice how good President Trump is on Twitter?

Because most groups have no idea how to best utilize it.

(8/30/2018 10:30:00 PM) - Al

As a wise man says, it's easy to change your mind when you don't believe in anything.

I love it when they get caught telling the truth. Tomorrow, he'll insist Wisconsin was never that great.

8/30/2018 10:30:00 PM

(8/30/2018 08:56:00 PM) - Al

Brewers have hovered around 3 wins more than "expected" all season.

Mostly due to their 27-17 record in one run games, they are now 5 games above where they "should be."

Fun fact? The Nats have outscored their opponents by 74 runs this season. The Brewers? +23. While the Brewers have won 5 extra, the Nats have lost 8 more than expected. Simply put, you'd never believe it if it wasn't true.

8/30/2018 08:56:00 PM

(8/30/2018 08:00:00 PM) - Al

I always get a good laugh out of agents who don't understand the simple fact that limiting a prospect's service time when their team is out of contention is simply good payroll management.

8/30/2018 08:00:00 PM

(8/30/2018 06:30:00 PM) - Al

They can't even tell the truth when they insist they tell the truth!

8/30/2018 06:30:00 PM

(8/30/2018 06:00:00 PM) - Al

Another mention of Wellstone. Today is #2 of 5 days. Imagine how prolonged #5 is going to be.

A wise man might say the reason McCain and President Trump never got along was that they were too much alike. The difference? Trump is proud of it and does not feel the need to hide it.

I think it's called "being comfortable in your own skin."

8/30/2018 06:00:00 PM

With friends like this...

(8/30/2018 05:00:00 PM) - Al

The funny thing here is seeing the old media have to play defense and spend the day insisting they are honest and not fake (just what you would expect them to do if they were fake).

Darn it, they could be making up stories ("unnamed sources" is French for "guess what I made up") and focusing on minute, unimportant negatives.

They're so busy, they haven't even had time to insist economic growth is bad for the little people!

8/30/2018 05:00:00 PM

(8/30/2018 04:14:00 PM) - Al

Jennings with a sprained ankle, day to day. Counsell thinks he might well miss a few days, but hopes it's minimal. Depends on pain.

Ankle sprains are notoriously tough to tell on time missed...some guys miss a couple days, some a couple months. If you recall, Rickie Weeks was never the same after what I think was called an ankle sprain.

Only one day until rosters expand, so while they may not have a lefty available, they'll have plenty of arms.

8/30/2018 04:14:00 PM

(8/30/2018 04:09:00 PM) - Al

Brewers pull out a victory and win the series.

You may have known that, but I didn't.

8/30/2018 04:09:00 PM

(8/30/2018 04:00:00 PM) - Al

Dems to begin insisting that GDP is a poor way to measure economic growth, that Obama's crappy 2-3% growth was actually better.

You laugh, but I promise you we'll begin hearting code words like "overheating," "growing too fast," and the like soon.

Because the truth would be too damn painful.

8/30/2018 04:00:00 PM

(8/30/2018 03:45:00 PM) - Al

No cavities, and my "numbers are better."

Short of winning "free dental care for life," that's about as good as a dental visit can go.

8/30/2018 03:45:00 PM

(8/30/2018 03:30:00 PM) - Al

What a novel idea.

8/30/2018 03:30:00 PM

(8/30/2018 03:00:00 PM) - Al

Brewers headed to the Arizona Fall League, per Adam:

Pitchers Daniel Brown, Bubba Derby, Jon Olczak and Miguel Sanchez; catcher Mario Feliciano, infielders Keston Hiura and Weston Wilson; outfielder Trent Grisham.

(8/30/2018 02:00:00 PM) - Al

Heh.

Not very governorial. This is why America was never great.

Maybe someday, they will learn to emulate our president with his mature behavior.

8/30/2018 02:00:00 PM

(8/30/2018 01:25:00 PM) - Al

I canceled my dental cleaning a few months ago because I had a bad cold, and was afraid I would be unable to not cough and hack while keeping my mouth open for infinite lengths of time.

They said "we might as well reschedule you right now" slyly, knowing I'd put it off until I had a sore spot months later. They said my hygienist was full until THU, AUG30*. I said sure, assuming the world would probably end long before then, because, you know, President Trump is crazy, and his tax cuts will lead to the end of days at any moment, because, if we have learned nothing else, redistributing more income leads to a stronger economy (also known as the Jimmy Carter "I didn't know the misery index went that high" rule).

Due to the above, I somehow failed to check the Brewers' matinee schedule. Hence, I will be DVRing the game at about 1:30 and watching the conclusion later. I could tell her to put the game on the TV that's on the ceiling after she adjusts my reclining, rock hard chair so my head is inches from the floor and my feet are 6 feet in the air (I have been assured that not only is this a good working position for her, but it's extremely comfortable for me), but it does not seem like an enjoyable way to watch the game.

*I could use another person, but not only does she laugh at my jokes (she is also the Rambling wife's hygienist, and she tells her "He's so FUNNY!"); I quietly admire anyone who can be booked months in advance while remaining fully clothed.

Seeing many people on Twitter saying that McCain having 3 funerals all over the country is incredibly tacky and pathetic. Many saying it is overkill (no pun intended). Saying it is "too much of a good thing" and that even McCain fans and apologists are tired of it already. My favorite? "We simply do not have the attention span for days of mourning. This shows how out of touch McCain was."

I'd just like to remind you, I was days ahead of the game on that one too.

8/30/2018 11:11:00 AM

Well, to be fair, sexual misbehavior is really important...but only if the accused is not running for office.

See Clinton, Bill.

8/30/2018 10:44:00 AM

(8/30/2018 10:38:00 AM) - Al

Hernandez DFA'd off the 40 man, Aaron Brooks added to the 40 and called up. Barnes added (I got him and Knebel mixed up last night, Jacob can come back, Corey has to wait until 9/2). Peralta and Williams sent to AAA.

As we have discussed here, any more deletions from the 40 will be very painful. I'm sure they feel strongly that they hope Hernandez clears, actually, as he has great stuff, but has been unable to harness it in the strike zone.

Peralta and Williams can return in 10 days.

Also, a catcher will be added on SAT, but not Nottingham, per the JS. That will require more 40 man finagling. One would assume Bandy or Bethancourt.

8/30/2018 10:38:00 AM

(8/30/2018 10:30:00 AM) - Al

It's because they are joyless negative nellies.

It's kind of sad really. Spending your limited time on the planet looking for things to be unhappy about, and then pretending to be offended.

Smile and enjoy it. These are the good old days.

(8/30/2018 08:42:00 AM) - Al

The irony here is, no one cares at all how petty and vindictive McCain is to President Trump, but suddenly, the fact he went out of his way to exclude Palin seems to have gone over like the proverbial fart in church.

Hell hath no fury than to scorn a woman that looks great in a short skirt.

(8/30/2018 07:33:00 AM) - Al

As I pondered the other day, Peralta could be one of the guys going down (or being DL'd, both are 10 days) to make room for a fresh arm or 2.

Freddy would just miss a single start, and his innings count is high anyway. Might refresh him a bit. As I point out annually, players on non contenders are being shut down, while no one on contenders are unless they have a limb falling off.

As of Saturday, they will not have to worry, but they will still only have the same amount of the guys they trust.

8/30/2018 07:33:00 AM

(8/30/2018 07:30:00 AM) - Al

(8/29/2018 11:31:00 PM) - Al

Counsell says there will be roster moves. Actually said "guys," so we'll see if that means 2 moves. Williams and Burnes have options, but would have to stay down 10 days. A DL stay would allow them to bring Barnes back without staying down 10 days.

EDIT: Barnes actually pitched 2/3rd's of an inning in Omaha. Knebel has not pitched since going to AAA, so to be honest, I'm not sure he ever left the team.

Woodruff only pitched 2 innings despite starting, so he is definitely coming up, and may even be scheduled to start a game. Houser just pitched 7 frames MON.

My guess would be Barnes, Wilkerson and/or Jake Thompson.

8/29/2018 11:31:00 PM

(8/29/2018 11:10:00 PM) - Al

Imagine being an incompetent, substandard, disinterested SOB and having to embarrass yourself every night in front of thousands of people that could do a vastly superior job, while actually giving a damn.

Don't worry, they'll get a raise and more vacation, and 1 or 2 of them will get bonus cash for displaying their lack of skills and ambition in playoff games.

I don't mean to, you know, bring common sense into this, but given the power of the incumbency, of course you want to choose someone who is not a placeholder.

Kyl is a good man, but is almost 80. I might be overthinking this, but I would pick a young, highly thought of Republican from a red district.

Brewers a victim of BAbip tonight. Both Guerra and Albers could not get any outs no matter how softly the batters hit the ball...Junior did not record an out on a ball in play, I'm not sure if I've ever seen that before. Counsell managed it much like he was in Colorado, taking guys out not due to ineffectiveness, but due to bad luck. For the most part, it worked well, as the replacements took over and got grounders and fly balls at the fielders. Left his bullpen very short, however.

I would assume they will put Davies into the rotation instead of Guerra, though his exit velocity numbers are probably very good. He probably will be less quick with the hook tomorrow and THU. You always hope the next start will be 6-7 innings and things will all work out.

Missing that horse Nelson was a huge negative. Suter too. Missing those 2 plus Davies for all but a handful of starts, they have pieced together a very respectable staff.

Less than two years into first term, Trump has often come to occupy the role of pariah — both unwelcome and unwilling to perform the basic rituals and ceremonies of the presidency, from public displays of mourning to cultural ceremonies.
Be careful, elite Trump haters. You're missing what you missed before. The people who feel shunned — who will never be royals or the American elite — the people your candidate called "deplorables" — they can hear you.--Althouse

They're telling the rubes and commoners that they have nothing but contempt for them. The irony here is how a very wealthy businessman from New York has managed to make himself an everyman. By not associating with the president, the elites are, again, doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing. All over the USA, people are saying, "Oh yeah? Well the hell with them then."

I distinctly recall last year some in the old media insisting NFL viewership would go way up, because the players showed how woke they were. We laughed at how out of touch they were as ratings plummeted.

They are the same ones currently telling us McCain was very popular and Trump is very unpopular. As we talked about yesterday, this is eerily reminiscent of Wellstone's death in MN and the subsequent downfall of Mondale's campaign.

Houser pitched very well in the majors in several of his short stays. He certainly seems likely to be called up eventually in SEP. Other than the top 4 (Barnes, Knebel, Woodruff, Davies), he's probably the next guy.

He is out of options, so the Crew will have to find a spot for him next season or they will lose him. He strikes out a batter an inning and throws hard. He'd be claimed by half the MLB teams and is still only 25, despite missing a season with injury.

8/28/2018 10:44:00 AM

(8/28/2018 10:04:00 AM) - Al

8/28/2018 10:04:00 AM

(8/28/2018 09:30:00 AM) - Al

Players on the 40 man roster not on the 25 man roster
Barnes
Davies
Diplan (very young, raw stuff, probably only player on 40 man not considered)
Hernandez
Houser
Knebel
Suter (60 day DL, does not count)
Wilkerson
Woodruff
Nelson (60 day DL, does not count)
Thompson

Broxton
Franklin (60 day DL, does not count)
Dubon (out for season)
Nottingham (injured)
Orf
Saladino
Vogt (60 day DL, does not count)
Santana

Obviously, many of these players will be added to the roster in SEP, barring injury of course. Barnes, Knebel, Woodruff, and Davies may be thrust into important roles. I would guess all the position players that are healthy will be brought up as well.

I do not believe the team has a single player on the 10 day DL right now, as often, they activate many of the players added to the SEP roster from that.

Canada all but begging to negotiate as well.

When you're the king, you wait for the pawns to talk. They need the USA far more than we need them.

That's why shipping pallets of cash to a craphole terrorist harboring country was so embarrassing. They could disappear off the planet tomorrow and the USA would not blink an eye. It showed how incompetent and over their heads they were.

Unlikely for a 9/1 callup, but might be ready later. Might also make the team hesitant to add another C to the 40 man roster

(8/27/2018 08:44:00 PM) - Al

McCain tries to get in that final kick to the groin, but ended up making himself look petty.

As stated, silly thing to say with a booming economy and vast amounts of peace. Selling chaos when everyone sees prosperity and positive results just makes you a negative nellie, and one to be ignored.

8/27/2018 08:44:00 PM

(8/27/2018 07:51:00 PM) - Al

I did not hear the Brewers released him, but I assume Berry had either an opt out or a handshake agreement that he would be let go if the Crew was not going to call him up when rosters expanded.

I looked the other night and I did not see any 40 man spots that were "weak" except for the last two guys picked up, Jake Thompson and Ariel Hernandez, and I see Thompson has pitched since then and been effective, leaving only AH, who has continued to lack control. As Stearns opined very early in the year, removing any player from the 40 would be painful, and they have been, resulting in many players lost for nothing. Such is a price they pay for having minor league depth.

Granted, the Brewers could remove any player from the 40 and DFA them, effectively giving them 10 days to work out a trade, take bids in effect. They could also, if they so choose, recall a injured player, such as Dubon or Nottingham, and put them on the 60 day DL, which would create a spot, but also give said player major league pay and service time. They have never done this in the Stearns' era, but that does not mean they will not in the future.

Most seasons, the Brewers recall a 3rd catcher when rosters expand, and if they choose to do so, would have to find a 40 man spot for them. As for a PR type, Broxton, Orf, and Saladino are all on the 40 and in AAA, and all have 20+ stolen bases at that level. They're probably a step slower than Berry (though Broxton may not be), but they are unlikely to get many starts (if they are brought up) and will probably serve the same purpose.

If you have 15 minutes or so (10 if you read fast, maybe 5 if you skim like me), read this entire thread, the story of a woman who is shocked (shocked mind you!) that folks did not want to pay $1500 each for the excitement and thrill of attending and paying for her dream wedding.

Two quick ironies:

1. The wedding is canceled, because no one can stand her.

2. She is apparently very independently wealthy, as she is now going backpacking for 2 months to "get away from it all," by which she means her self created drama.

Sometimes, it is difficult to believe such terrible people exist. You realize, of course, these are the same folks that make fun of us rubes that shop at Wal Mart and happily eat at McDonald's.

Say what you will, but angry McCain was by far my favorite McCain. I hated the cuddly grandfather like persona he put forth to try and win an election.

His biggest weakness by far was assuming he could compromise with people who wanted to see him fail.

(8/26/2018 04:46:00 PM) - Al

Brewers have 4 more wins than they "should" have based solely on runs scored and runs allowed. 25-17 in one run games helps immensely, of course.

Amazingly, the Rockies have 7 more wins than they "should." They are also very good in one run games, 22-13.

Even more unbelievable, the Red Sox are 19-11 in one run games...and 71-31 in 2+ run games, winning 70% of those. They have a 99.9% of making the playoffs per ESPN...and so do the Yankees, who have 8 less wins.

8/26/2018 04:46:00 PM

(8/26/2018 04:27:00 PM) - Al

I mentioned how good the economy was today and the gent from Texas by me asked if it was that good here in WI. I said yes, and really, in the whole USA. He admitted, things have been booming so long in Texas for so long, he didn't pay much attention anymore...the news is always good down there.

I recall one month when Obama was in office, TX created over 50% of the jobs in the USA, in fact, it was almost 2/3rd's, about 64%. TX bragged about it, and Obama, never one to share credit, said they should be thankful his policies had led to such job growth. The TX governor (or possibly another politician) said "He should try using the same ideas in the other 49 states then, because they all suck." I recall several on the left insisting this was not only incredibly racist, but off the charts disrespectful.

Those are the same people calling President Trump a nazi. Because they don't like the fact his policies actually work. Envy is evil.

8/26/2018 04:27:00 PM

Heh.

I'm not saying they repeat the same thing over and over.

They do that themselves.

I'm so old, I recall every Republican since at least Reagan has been "mentally unfit."

Why? Because they don't like them. If they'd only say unpatriotic things and say we need to raise taxes, they would adore them.

You see, she wants you to not be able to make any money.

Why? Because she's already wealthy. That way, she'll always be better off than the rubes.

She does not want you to have the same opportunity as she has had. Imagine how evil one has to be to think like that. Scary.

After insisting Rasmussen was biased for 2 years, all the other polls now have moved up in the general vicinity of Rasmussen's.

As Salena Zito pointed out, if you were able to find it online, since many sites eliminated it because it was nicely said, the choice to many Americans is simple...Trump or the swamp.

The fact the polls have not shown any downward movement after last week is stunning to the old media, who have yet to figure out the above, as well as the fact their constant crying wolf has made most immune to most everything.

I know it's a surprise, but the fact Manafort used questionable accounting practices a decade before Trump ran for president does not exactly move the needle. As many have stated, it shows Mueller's investigation is basically just a poorly hidden vendetta against those who were involved with the campaign. I mean, it wasn't even a business involved with Russia, even though there are thousand that are, especially in transportation, agriculture, mining, and timber. .

Considering the way they've hemorrhaged cash while insisting they could make money on a all you can eat steak for 99 cents model, Movie Pass says "thank you for subscribing, but the hell with you."

The latest plan is probably feasible, especially if they can work with some theater chains and make them "preferred," while getting a small kickback (50 cents or $1 a movie would make them very profitable, or even a share of concessions). But by making promises and then taking them back, they risk losing many of the ones who have allowed them to at least maintain the cash flow to keep them around as they insist math does not apply to them.

Kinda pathetic actually.

Reminds me of a monarchy. Not to mention that while she has done boatloads of charitable work in her life, I don't know if she's ever had a real job. Her family runs a distributorship for Anheuser Busch, but I do not think she is involved in running it.

If we wanted a person that has never run a business in that seat, we might as well ask Obama if he wants to move there.

I heard a while ago that Ducey might appoint himself, as they were assuming McCain would step down at any moment. As many have said, considering Ms. McCain is to the left of her husband, many wonder if she's even a Republican.

Awful, vile stuff about McCain's death all over online today. About 90% from Occupy type far leftists, but some from libertarians and very conservative groups as well. The one I see repeated over and over that is not mean I will repeat here:

I hope McCain's seat turns red next election.

Rambling wife texted me last evening to buy a box of mac and cheese on the way home. The Rambling son often makes this himself, and had apparently used the last box and not informed us we were out.

I had to stop for gas anyway, so I went in to see if Kwik Trip carried it, not wanting to stop at 2 places, never mind have to talk to the cashier at the grocery.*

Sure enough, KT had a pair of facings of the blue box, one regular and one spirals. I grabbed the normal version and paid for it along with my gasoline. I understand why KT charges $1.99, because people like me pay it, and to be honest, unless it was on sale at the little neighborhood store a mile from my house, it would have been $1.50 or so there, as, while they have a good deli and meat department, their prices are often painfully high compared to the greatest retailer in the history of the world.

18 pack ordered from WM.com. Sure it's overkill, but it won't go bad. 81 cents a box, by the way.

*This is, of course, because I'm such a people person.

I must admit, my favorite part of Twitter last night was many on the right breaking up the love fest the left was pretending to have for McCain by pointing out they called him the devil himself when he ran against the godlike Obama.

I can't be the only one who remembers the constant refrain of "W is awful, but McCain is even worse!" that they sold for months after the conventions. Why?

Because that's what they do. They did it to Romney too, even blasting him for having an adopted black grandson. There's few people on the planet that are better people than Mitt, he smiled, took it...and lost. Trump fought back, went on the offensive, and basically, did what the Dems always do.

The left will never forgive him for it.

Other than the loss, not a bad outcome for the Crew tonight. Chacin went 6, and would have gone longer if not for incompetence behind the plate. Jennings, Williams, and Albers each went an inning, and while far from perfect, completed the game.

Taylor and Matt would have been far better off not pitching back to back games, but did so, and the bullpen, especially the high leverage trio of Hader, Jeffress, and Soria, got some rest. Hopefully, those 3 and Lyles will be able to get through tomorrow's relief innings, though if it's a bad outcome, I assume Jennings and Albers would be able to go again.

Glenn reports John McCain has passed away.

Meghan McCain with a touching eulogy, though I admit, I find it a little morbid she obviously had this penned and ready to post.

I, of course, heartily supported the senator's presidential run, because he was far more qualified than his opponent and far more conservative. He has wavered all over since then, often inconsistent with his votes and positions. That said, it's difficult not to respect his service and sacrifice. I still chuckle at the Dems' constant criticism of him during the 2008 campaign of his fiery temper. Not only was there no video evidence of this, though he's been in the public eye for decades, as I said then, I'd probably be a little more short with fools too had I spent 5 years in a bamboo cage held captive, not to mention how hot and buggy that must have been (imagine if you will, how many calls umpires would miss if those were their working conditions*), because I proudly served my country.

*Just joking, of course. Like they could do worse. Last night, I swear the home plate ump was flipping a coin. 15 innings, never did figure out a consistent strike zone.

ADDED: My former neighbor worded this badly, as she obviously knows Meghan and is friends with her, while she does not/barely knows Cindy or his other kids.

Almost unwatchable. They call time out every 5 minutes, even though there is a stop in action every 3-5 seconds.

Brewers will not make a move today. I'm sure they do not want to lose Burnes for 10 days, even though he likely will not pitch until TUE.

They do not have a mop up man with an option, as they have most of the campaign. SEP1 is a week away, hopefully, not many 3 inning starts or anymore 15 inning games in the meantime.

(8/25/2018 02:28:00 PM) - Al

Just a thought from a casual tennis fan...they should let Serena Williams and all other players to wear whatever they want, as long as they would be allowed to go to a normal beach in it.

If people want to watch tennis because the players are athletic and look great, they should damn well welcome those fans to the game and smile while doing so.

As Martina Navratilova so famously said when Anna Kournikova was making millions from looking perfect, "Hey, she's not taking any money from any other player. If they would not pay her, they would be paying a model or an actress. More power to her."

This is very similar to what the LPGA did a decade ago, being unhappy and making rules and regs about players like Natalie Gulbis selling posters and calendars. Now, they make their own, and the game is far more popular, despite the fact the golf has faded in the USA (and yes, it has correlated with Tiger Woods' injuries and troubles).

Being sexy sells. Why some insist on ignoring this and chasing fans that want to support the sport and spend money away is a mystery for the ages. It's bad business, but as the article states, tennis has been struggling to adjust to modern times for the past 50 years. They fined and irritated McEnroe and Connors their entire career, and now, beg and ask the players to show more emotion and interact with fans.

Simply put, they're never happy.

Of course not.

Once you can punch a hole in the 1st Amendment, the water is muddied enough that they will just continue to throw more dirt in.

That's why there's no "well" or "but" in there. If the framers had wanted those words in there, they would have put them in.

The Rambling wife and I are watching the shows we DVR'd. On Trisha Yearwood's show, she is making "succotash." I always thought succotash was just a bunch of things thrown together, so your version might not be anything like mine.

I found out it is not.

(8/25/2018 12:08:00 PM) - Al

About the 12th inning last night, I said to myself, "Self, someone is going to win this game with a blooper or a ground ball up the middle."

PIT thought they won it with a blooper, and then MIL tied it with a grounder up the middle. It took a ground ball to RF to win it.

Short term, luck is far better than skill.

By the way, spellcheck just told me "term" is not a word. Methinks spellcheck has been celebrating the weekend heavily.

Rule number one...you must be extremely critical of people who have different beliefs than yourself.

They look for reasons to be unhappy. They make themselves miserable. That alone should be enough to make regular folks avoid them and question why would they want to join such a group of negative nellies.

For the record, you can’t love someone in the LGBTQ community and still disagree with their lifestyle.

That's an opinion, of course, though it's stated with such snobbery it's easy to think it's somehow factual. I'm on record as being completely apathetic to a person's sexual orientation (and most everything else about them, to be honest), as I have talked many times how I used to be an outcast as a conservative, and, amazingly, over time, all but the "Republican because I'm really religious" have come over to my feelings (or lack of) on the subject.

However, substitute "someone who has a drug or alcohol problem" or "someone who has different religious or political beliefs" in that sentence. Suddenly, the bigot is the person saying it.

The author is the bully here, as they are unwilling to allow Murphy to even think differently.

Two interesting things Stearns said in his unofficial presser:

1. Knebel going down just "gives him a break" to work on things in the bullpen.

2. Expects Davies to make starts for Brewers in SEP. Whether that means he expects an injury or knows someone will be shut down he left unsaid. Did say Peralta is fine on his innings.

One has to wonder if someone is pitching with a nagging injury and they know eventually, the pain will be too much. Considering Anderson was pushed back a couple days last time through, first guess would be Chase. Or, perhaps a 6 man rotation. Or. a 4 man rotation with "spot starters" used when needed.

Zach and Corey both expected to return 9/2, when eligible.

I know people are going to say treatment is tough and if it is not working, but you never know, the next treatment might be the one that starts to be effective.

2. Why is he still a senator? It's embarrassing he has not resigned his office due to health reasons.

Right now, AZ is represented by Flake, who has been on vacation in Africa for much of the past few months and is not running again, and McCain, who is never going to return to the Senate. The only person fighting for the citizens of AZ are staffers that may or may not care, as they have no one to work hard for.

There seems to be no consensus at all on who would be taken out of the rotation if they would acquire Harvey. Some say Guerra, others claim he's the best SP they have. Peralta is up and down, but when he has a good game, probably has the best stuff on the staff.

In cases like this, many teams just go to a 6 man rotation, as often SP's are tired and can use an extra day. Barring injury, that might be what we see.

(8/24/2018 08:00:00 AM) - Al

Al,

Just back from vacation, spent the past month in your neck of the woods, in the Minocqua area, at my parent's guest house. Back to the grind of beef and crop farming in Southeastern Wisconsin.

Just wondering if you could update us on your friend who ran into legal trouble. My brother, who I farm with, was convicted years ago and spent time in the correctional system too. He was railroaded and upcharged as well, was actually sentenced to 22 years at one time, but after appeals they threw out several of the convictions due to a complete lack of evidence, they made a deal for 7 and he served 4. He was no angel, but 2 others lied and got immunity to make him some sort of kingpin.

We stay in touch with several prisoners and you should tell your readers how much they enjoy mail and hearing from people. If someone wants, you should share their address and let your readers write and support him. I was just a teenager back when he was in prison, but not only did it help him, it kept me on the straight and narrow. I got good grades, never did drugs, and became the first person in our family to go to and graduate from college. Of course, he's still a better farmer than me, but we do pretty well together.

By the way Al, have you ever thought of doing a podcast? I listen to many of them when I'm out working, and always thought your style would work well in a podcast, and you've done radio on TMJ, so I know you speak clearly and can get your point across.

Thank you for your work you do. Through your site I have found several others I enjoy.

I've spent many days in or near Minocqua, which is best known for being a gangster and Chicago weekend/summer getaway. It's about an hour north of me in the Wausau area.

If anyone wants to write in support, feel free to email me and I will share the address and details, which I will not make public. I will say, however, that my friend is a woman, who I guarantee is not looking for a relationship (with either gender), so don't waste your time, boys and girls. She was recently sentenced and entered a "12 month program" in Georgia to get her life in order. She did her best to find a Christian oriented program as well, though I have not heard what one she ended up in. Beggars can't be choosers, she only had an hour's notice of her sentencing. I ended up making a phone call for her, as she only had internet and could not afford a phone plan. Released onto the street without a penny to her name; setting them up for success in GA.

By the way, they called in prisoners in small groups for sentencing, and in her group, the guy ahead of her had killed someone. He was charged with either a low form of murder or mansluaghter, she could not remember. His sentence? 10 years probation.  It was the lightest sentence she heard.

I wonder if his name was Kennedy?

Brewers did claim Harvey, have until 12:30 this afternoon to make a deal. As MLBTR points out, all 5 SP's have better overall numbers, but depth is a good thing.

I am on phone, so cannot link, but head over for more.

Knebel and Davies optioned to AAA. I was just thinking a day or two ago when they activated Soria, it might be a goods idea to send Knebel down, even if they just keep him with the team and let him throw some bullpens and simulated games to work n his control.

I assume both will rejoin the team within 20 days, so neither will use an option, which may or may not be important.

MLBTR indicating the Crew may have needed to open a 25 man roster spot for a waiver claim or trade, but if they do, they also need to open up a 40 man roster spot somehow, though the 2 recent pickups, Jake Thompson and Ariel Hernandez, have been injured and hellishly wild, respectively.

Maybe they were the team that claimed Harvey or Hamilton. The farm director whose name escapes me said Aaron Brooks and Quintin Torres Costa had been very effective at AAA, though both would have to be added to the 40. Woodruff was mentioned by name as well. Wilkerson has better numbers than everyone, except maybe QTC, who would probably be used as a loogy.

ADDED: I thought the minimum roster for MLB was 24. Maybe it does not matter unless it's a game day.

This is such a terrible, poorly thought out reaction from the left, it will be noticed. This is exactly why celebs and entertainers are such a poor mouthpiece. Being creative does not make you intelligent.

The idea they cannot logically separate illegal immigration from legal immigration is a puzzler. Get in line and do it the right way.

Unexpectedly.

5 decades? That's a long time. Coincidence, of course. It should be noted that the "total" is lower even though the population has risen many fold in half a century.

Obama insisted we were at full employment when we were at 6% unemployment. I'm not sure if he was more dishonest or incompetent.

There's a debate for the ages. Someday, when man is able to fly just by thinking about it, they'll still be arguing that.

Off topic, but I just thought of it; one of the funniest things about the Obama presidency was Jimmy Carter getting upset at all the comparisons of their downtrodden administrations filled with economic malaise.

Bad luck, of course.

Al,
Long time reader of your blog. Great work.
The casuals were out in force Tuesday night. Someone on Facebook was ranting about the loss. He said the window for a small market time is only one year so when you have a chance you have to go all in.
Someone else in the discussion said it was time to fire Counsell and Sterns.
Thought you would get a kick out of that.
Bert

The irony? They've already been contending for 2 seasons now. A few years ago, when Stearns took over, I recall several folks saying the earliest they could possibly do so would be 2020 or 2021.
Dare I say it, but if Mark A decided he would rather have someone else other than Stearns as his GM, DS might well end up being in the top 5 highest paid executives in the game. Not often are young, respected GM's who have had success free agents. Theo is the only example that pops to mind, and one could argue building a winner from scratch in a small market like Milwaukee is more difficult than winning in Boston or Chicago.

Billy Hamilton claimed on waivers, trade not expected. As I have said, his value as a late game speedster is far more than you would think, and hides his weakness of, you know, making outs.

The problem here is, he's valuable enough as a platoon player who is a great defender and baserunner that he is unlikely to be let go.

To be honest, it's not his fault he's miscast as an everyday player. If the Brewers had Arcia batting lead off, it would not make a bad SS.

Davies finally with good results today, 6 innings, a run on 2 hits, 9 K's.

Either he or Woodruff would probably be the 6th SP in case of injury or rainout forcing a doubleheader. Just as likely, he may be a vital part of the bullpen, perhaps in a 4th/5th inning role pitching 2-3 innings; or perhaps closing out a game in which the team is either ahead or behind by several runs in the 6th or 7th.

(8/22/2018 09:00:00 PM) - Al

Heh.

Disgruntled minor leaguers are often unhappy when they are sent down.

Tyler is so darn talented and the Crew is so darn ornery, he hasn't pitched in the minors all season. Other teams have no problem putting up with bad behavior if it's Bryce Harper or Manny Machado.

Some AAA arm with a ceiling of a passable middle reliever? Not so much.

The phrase "not worth the headache" comes to mind.

By the way, the Brewers only "job" is to build a winning team. How they go about it, maximizing the 25 man roster, is just common sense. The fact Cravy is too stupid to understand it explains why he's such a chronic underachiever.

8/22/2018 09:00:00 PM

(8/22/2018 06:30:00 PM) - Al

I would have traded Hiura before Peralta or Burnes. Most folks do not realize how good FP has been since he has had a few outings that he was inconsistent.

As often is the case, casuals lack the understanding of how young he is compared to how good he is.

FYI, Adam of MLB.com confirmed today the Brewers are not going to pull him from the rotation due to IP. He's good to go, as long as they are playing. As he was today, he will be limited pitch wise, 90-100 a start. That's me speaking, not Adam.

I would not have traded Ray either, unless DeGrom or Syndergaard would have been the return. He might be playing some next year, especially if Braun has health issues.

Contrarianism at its finest.

I've seen no less than a dozen people say today if the Dems want to impeach the president, not only will many be pleased that a more conservative Pence takes over, many deep red Trump supporters will be furious and never vote Dem again in their life. The real kicker? Anytime a party gets both the House and the Senate, and the executive branch is the other party, you can bet your behind impeachment will be brought up.

The reason? As Scott Adams says, "Because we do not like him/her."

8/22/2018 04:49:00 PM

I'm afraid I might win.

The more they decide to go after political opponents, the more Ted Kennedys and Barack Obamas and other unqualified, power hungry oafs we end up with as the ruling class.

You see, the left thinks free speech is important...as long as it's someone they like saying something...they like.

Home plate and 3B umpire both miss the pitcher bunting at a pitch, both say no swing.

I'm not saying guys off the street could do just as well. The apathy and lack of effort does that without me saying a word.

But, you know, it was hot out there...a few days ago.

Then, the 2B umpire stands there and lets the ball hit him, like a...cement statue.

Of course, to be fair, a cement statue would do a far better job making calls too....

They're awful, everyone knows they're awful, and no one cares at all. Too busy counting their cash.

(8/21/2018 07:52:00 PM) - Al

Many folks making fun of the fact Darvish made $25M and got one win.

First of all, injury is a risk, and even moreso for a pitcher. Teams know that.

Secondly, I find it poor taste anyone is laughing about an injury, and as a very unPC person, at least privately, I'm not offended by much.

Thirdly, let's be honest...the Cubs and other big market teams, who get several times the TV/radio money the Brewers and other small market clubs get, can take risks like that, lose a spendy player like that, and while it certainly hurts, it's not devastating. To a team like the Crew, they simply cannot afford to have their expensive players not produce or miss entire seasons.

8/21/2018 07:52:00 PM

(8/21/2018 05:42:00 PM) - Al

I have seen several lefties on Twitter lament the fact the Iowa woman was killed by an illegal.

8/21/2018 05:42:00 PM

(8/21/2018 05:37:00 PM) - Al

I had to laugh how people are surprised Thames is playing tonight. Braun hardly ever plays a day game after a night game, so barring massive injuries or Ryan being mega hot, you knew he was either off tonignt or tomorrow.

It just amazes me how so many don't seem to notice any of these trends. I'm sure Counsell makes some decisions based on how they've done versus the starting pitcher, which is in the game notes but rarely online; so we do not see that, for the most part. He may even use such splits as fly ball/ground ball/strikeout pitchers or high velocity/medium/low that are on BR, but are rarely thought of.

Billy Beane laughed a few years ago, saying there were about a half dozen splits readily available, but most teams only use one of them. The A's often "platoon" 2 RH hitters based on a variety of factors, and reporters don't even ask about it, just thinking the manager is randomly splitting time. The A's have had offensive success for ages just by having many "average" or above offensive players, and then they just fiddle with them. Folks are so used to it, they don't even question it, even though many are "worried" about the Crew and Cubs having "too many" solid position players. First world problems.

However, Schoop plays versus LHP and Shaw and Moustakas play versus RHP. Other than that, it often has to do with who is hot, who could use rest, and so on. For example, as much as they have talked about Aguilar being a "big guy" and needing rest, I would think he may well get WED or FRI off to give him a 48 or 72 hour break, depending on how you look at it.

Darvish out for season.

He's been one of the few imports from Japan that has been relatively healthy over the years, as their young pitchers throw 50 times more than young pitchers in the USA.

8/21/2018 05:09:00 PM

(8/21/2018 04:14:00 PM) - Al

Needless to say, the Brewers had no use for either Adams or Murphy. If the Brewers are putting in claims, it's for a catcher or a pitcher.

People forget, you can't claim several players a day...you might end up with them.

Think how embarrassing it would be to claim a player, have to DFA someone on the 40...and then DFA the player you claimed because you really did not want him.

Condescending, check.

Never had a real job, check.

She's a shoo in.

100% accurate.

The irony, of course, is  the ACLU claims to defend the Constitution, but in reality, attempts to circumvent it every day.

Heh.

Talk about self importance at dangerously high levels.

It's almost as if it sends the wrong message to the rubes, so the old media is afraid to report it.

Sorta reminds me of that Bernie supporter trying to execute dozens of Republicans.

Cubs acquire Dan Murphy, Cards Matt Adams.

As others have pointed out, Murphy has no real place on the Cubs except as a PH. I'm not sure if they will now be the victims of many saying they have "too much depth" or not.

Adams is an underrated player, though he weakens their defense immensely, by making Carpenter play somewhere he's terrible at...Matt's metrics at 2B or 3B are horrendous, which is not a surprise at all if you've seen him play. Of course, maybe SL will use him as a bench player as well.

The irony of this? I've owned several Eagles' albums over the years, some twice, as I had them on cassette (kids, ask your parents) and CD. Never owned that one though. Never owned Thriller either.

I still play their "return album" often in the car. I still chuckle that they started the concert by saying "We never broke up, we just went on a 14 year vacation."

Maybe she'll get shot, and it will go up to 11%.

Gee, I wonder where they got the cash to build all these weapons?

Nice job, Barry.

All victims should be believed.

Unless it's guy. Then he's a scumbag.

By the way, that seems very gender specific. I, for one, am very offended.

Sad to be correct about the Iowa young lady. I know people are held captive for months and years on TV all the time. In reality, it rarely happens that way. I hope they find who did it. The way the authorities have acted, they likely know, but proving it is another matter entirely.

These are the good old days. Some folks are just too busy wishing the streets were paved with gold to enjoy the good times.

I'm happy to pay taxes to help the helpless. I don't like paying taxes to help the clueless. Look at the Occupy movement...I'm forced to pay taxes to help those whose plight I delight in.--Dennis Miller
