So I'm at a funeral yesterday, and I asked the priest for the wifi password. He said "Have some respect." I then asked if that was all lowercase and with no spaces.

Of course that really didn't happen. Because I don't go to funerals.

MLBTR have no FA's in the top 10 going to the Crew, but they came in 2nd for Eovaldi and 4th for Corbin, Happ, and Keuchel.

Being a contrarian, I had them signing Grandal (and Kelvin Herrera). I discussed this once before, as Yasmani is known to be an excellent pitch framer and solid defender, but had a rough postseason. If they feel this was a small sample, they will go after him. If they feel he is a crappy defender, they will not.

BUMP/UPDATE: I see some folks are saying Carlos Herrera will be added to the 40 because he throws hard. He also had a 5.46 ERA in Appleton last year. And a K/BB ratio  barely over 1. And he'll only be 21. I doubt it.

Possible additions to the 40 man
Trey Supak--23 next season. Main cog in the Jason Rogers trade (Broxton was the throw in), former 2nd round pick of Pirates. ranks him 13th in system, split season between high A and AA; 8-7, 2.48 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 0.4 HR/9, 8 K/9, 2.80 K/BB. In my mind, he's probably the only sure add. Prediction: YES.

Jon Olczak--25 next season. Former 11th round pick of Crew, went 10-3, 1.39 ERA almost entirely in AA, all in relief. Followed that up with a 1.50 ERA in the Arizona Fall League. 0.98 WHIP, 0.2 HR/9 (only allowed 1 HR while facing 230 batters), 9.7 K/9, 3.3-1 K/BB. Sub .200 BAA versus both LH and RH hitters. Only gave up more than a single earned run once all of 2018. does not have him ranked in the top 30 prospects, probably due to his advanced age. Still, one cannot ignore video game type stats. He's a 2 pitch guy and solely a reliever, so his ceiling is not that high. Still, if not protected, he seems certain to be taken, something you cannot say about anyone else in the organization other than Supak. Prediction: YES

Troy Stokes--23 next season. Former 4th round pick by the previous regime. Spent 2018 in AA, .343/.430, with 19 steals in 21 tries. Ranked 15th best prospect in system by Won minor league Gold Glove for defensive work last year. Why is this a question? Well, he's only 5-8. He has a below average throwing arm, and while he can play all 3 OF spots, has played LF 85% of the time in the minors (though playing on the same team as Corey Ray has upped that number). BA of only .233 LY, only .251 in 2017. Walks a lot, but strikes out often as well, 27% of his PA's last year. Finally, Tyrone Taylor was already added to the 40, and Corey Ray, while he does not have to be protected from the Rule 5 due to his lack of pro experience, obviously ranks above Stokes as a prospect. He's a borderline guy, and under Stearns, they rarely are protected. Still, one number jumps out at me...44%. In 2018, 44% of his hits were for extra bases, and 38% in his career. Doubles often turn into homers as players develop and add muscle. I would not be surprised if he's not, but I'm guessing he is. Prediction: YES.

Bubba Derby--25 next season. Former 6th round pick of the A's, acquired with Nottingham in Khris Davis swap. 4.49 ERA in Colorado Springs, which, as with the rest of the western PCL, is an offensive environment. Derby will almost certainly have a major league career, but it's tough to get excited about him. Kind of a blah guy, seems to me there are many minor league FA's of similar talent. That said, only 25, so he may turn into something more. I have him as a slight miss. Prediction: NO

Jake Gatewood--23 next season. Former 1st round pick of the Crew. Ranked 10th by Prodigious power, but after bouncing all over the field on defense, seems to have settled in at 1B (though projects to have the athletic ability to be a 1B/LF/RF in the majors). .302/.466 in tough to hit Southern League. Only 28 walks to go along with 114 K's. To me, he just makes too many outs. Prediction: NO

Cody Ponce--25 next season. Former 2nd round pick of the Crew. 7-6, 4.36 ERA in AA. Fastball, cutter, curve all are projectable to the majors. I think he'll eventually be a solid reliever. Just not enough upside and success yet to add to the 40. Prediction: NO

Devin Williams--24 next season. Former 1st round pick of Crew. Missed all of 2017 due to injury. Throws hard, but no success since 2016, when he was decent in high A. Prediction: NO

Nate Griep--25 next season. Former 8th round pick of the Crew. Good AA reliever, 2 30+ saves seasons in minors. Walks too many, mediocre versus LH bats. Prediction: NO

Nate Orf--29 next season. Undrafted FA. Lost his luster to many after 25 mediocre big league PA's, but he can still hit, run, and defend 7 positions. His ceiling may be that of a utility guy, but that's what we have thought he was for years. He could have been had for a 40 man spot last SEP and went unclaimed, so it's doubtful anyone will take him and have to keep him on the 25 man all season, especially with his advanced age. I think he'll have a nice career though. Prediction: NO.

Conner Harber--25 next season. Drafted in 16th round by Crew. 2.54 ERA, but mostly in high A ball. Too many walks too. Similar to Griep actually. Prediction: NO.

Quintin Torres Costa, a lefty reliever who may have been added for SEP, had a very nice season in AA/AAA, but had to have Tommy John surgery afterwards. I assume he will go unprotected and undrafted, as a team would have to pay him a major league salary to sit on the DL and then keep him up all of 2020.

Eovaldi was on the Brewers' list long before his stellar late season success. Probably pushed his demands out of the Crew's range, but they can make a solid offer and make others overpay, as happened last year with Cobb, Darvish, and others.

8M people own AR15's, many own several. I'm not saying they're just out to take your guns. But they are, and they do not hide the fact once they take them, you'll be helpless to stop them from killing you.

Rosenthal says Moustakas' best fit would be with the Brewers on the MLBN.

One of the most underrated aspects of the team Stearns built was the defense and the baserunning. MM is not a speed demon, but he is not a plodder either, like Aguilar and whoever catches.

Another interesting aspect is that the Crew will only bring in one infielder, and that includes Schoop, who will get about $10M if offered arby. Shaw's ability to play 2B or 3B allows them to look for the best fit at either spot.

The GOP's failure to embrace President Trump's unapologetic fiscal conservatism and successful economic blueprint is probably why they do not have 55-58 Senate seats next year.

In the AZ aftermath, one need not look past how unpopular their incumbents were when one wonders why so many Republicans stayed home. If you had bothered to show up and vote and your senators were Jeff Flake and John McCain, seemingly going out of their way to keep progress from happening every day in DC, it's an easy call to stay home.

Gent in PA has a livestream on You Tube right now. Said he just came from a farm sale, in which a farmer sold his entire herd of about 110 cows. Said the top price was $1500, but that very good cows sold for $1k and very passable, solid cows sold for $500-600. I believe he said a few went for $300-400.

He said if you're a farmer looking to get out, wait until spring. He said he was almost getting emotional about the terrible prices the farmer received.

He made a point I had never heard said before. In talking to others at the sale, it was pointed out that if you go into a bank and say you want money to start a 100 cow herd, you'll get laughed at and escorted out. However, if you say you want to start a 1000 cow herd, good chance you'll leave with all the money you need.

Apparently, volume is king.

John Henson will miss 12 weeks. The Bucks' big man depth will be tested.

As mentioned, Maker should move up a notch in the rotation, and quite possibly Wood as well.

11/16/2018 02:26:00 PM

(11/16/2018 02:19:00 PM) - Al

Morosi also notes within that column that the Brewers are exploring the market for rotation help and have shown some preliminary interest in righty Anibal Sanchez. The 34-year-old parlayed a minor league deal with the Braves into an absolutely brilliant rebound campaign that landed him 28th on MLBTR’s Top 50 Free Agent rankings. Beyond a 2.83 ERA with 8.9 K/9, 2.8 BB/9, 0.99 HR/9 and a 45 percent ground-ball rate in 134 1/3 innings, Sanchez also allowed the least hard contact of any pitcher in the game, per Statcast.--MLBTR

We all know that Stearns is a firm believer in preventing hard contact in pitchers and picking up high velocity hitters. That's why Yelich is in MIL.

Stearns is also a believer in finding bargains, and has no trouble with guys that do not throw hard. That is one reason Chacin ended up in MIL.

Heard a college aged woman use the phrase "rocket surgery" today. I assumed she had jumbled "rocket science" and "brain surgery" in her mind and made a speaking error. The Rambling wife agreed, but the Rambling son said he has heard that said on many occasions, it's kind of a joke, a play on words.

Is it possible the young people are just outsmarting us old fogies?

Avenatti has been accused of a terrible act, but as one that believes in due process, let's not be hasty about insisting he's guilty.

However, I do seem to recall an admitted sexual molester saying "It doesn't matter if he's guilty or not."

So, there you go.

Funny how things work out. I seem to recall someone pointing out how poorly the left chooses their heroes. Game, set, and match. Every one of the accusers and their lawyers have been shown to be liars and money hungry harlots.

Kavanaugh? He's on the Supreme Court, and spending time with his beautiful family.

Somewhere, Keith Ellison is laughing and saying, "What an amateur. But, I'm sure she deserved it. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go charge me some Jews."

1. He's ignorant on economics.*

The Nationals are hoping that a hearing later this week will represent a major step toward the resolution of their longstanding dispute with the Orioles over television rights fees, as Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports. A three-person panel consisting of Brewers owner Mark Attanasio, Mariners CEO Kevin Mather, and Blue Jays CEO Mark Shapiro will hear the case.--MLBTR

I think I hit a nerve with my hatred of The Dixie Chicks. One gent pointed out they have not had a top 20 single since...2002, despite several releases (actually, none have hit the top 35, not even on the country chart). Another pointed out they only reappear to "put a toe in the water" and then disappear again when they find out they're still despised.

I admit, the funniest part is they have not even been embraced by the left, who happily supported unabashed criminals and thugs in Occupy and now Antifa.

Perhaps the funniest thing is, if you'll recall, they got into a feud with noted proud American and frequent USO performer Toby Keith (not to self...if you google Dixie Chicks and USO, one does not find a single performance...selfish is as selfish does, despite plenty of time on their hands)...I wonder how that turned out? Hint, scroll to #1.

The idea of just sitting there and taking it is exactly what the Dems count on.

Why run if you're not going to fight for what was, to be blunt, very likely stolen by terrible people. In FL, they're not even covering their tracks, as they admit to breaking the rules on several occasions, as if to say, "What you gonna do about it, white boy?" Being afraid of being called racist for pointing out black people flaunting the law is exactly what they're counting on.

Reminds me of John McCain and Mitt Romney.

They call it losing gracefully. History refers to it as losing.

Liz Cheney seems to have the right idea. Fight like a girl. That old saying that "Republicans are too civil for a Civil War"...well, the hell with them.

I'd love to be at a Xmas celebration in which this was a sought after gift. I know the Rambling wife's uncle that reads Ramblings would too. Being surrounded by patriotic Americans who believe government should be fiscally responsible would be a fine thing.

The Dems refused to support the "right to try" bill after supporting it for years, because President Trump pushed for it, and eventually signed it into law.

The most likely possible Yelich like trade the Crew could make?

A package headlined by Hiura to the Royals for Whit Merrifield. Merrifield was slow to develop, and will be 30 next April, with 4 years of team control remaining.

I would assume it would take Hiura, another top prospect, and 2 other solid prospects, though given the Royals' place in the success cycle, they could be low level guys. Just to throw out an example package...Hiura, Gray, Houser, and Jarvis would make sense for both teams.

Recently, the Rambling wife's grandpa passed away. The Rambling son did not want to miss school and curling practice, so he and I stayed home while the Rambling wife left TUE and came home THU to give her knee most rest time between long drives when it stiffens up.

The Rambling son was literally giggly with excitement that he could pull his car into the garage while she was gone so he did not have to scrape it off in the mornings. Other than that, I don't think he even noticed she was gone.

If you doubt that, Hillary Clinton destroyed her hard drive with a hammer in which she had illegally downloaded confidential emails to from her illegal email account...and the FBI typed up excuses why they were not going to charge her before they even interviewed her.

Simply shocking watching the Bucks not just defeat the Warriors by 20+, but dominate them so badly that when the Warriors "cut" the lead to 19, the crowd was the loudest they had been all night.

Giannis was taken out of the game with about 3 minutes left in the 3rd and never returned. With about 7 minutes left in the game, both teams removed their starters and garbage time officially began.

To make this clear, the game was in Oakland.

Greetings Al....I have been following you for quite some time now...I enjoy your observations, information, wit, and insight into the Brewers. I am not one to post on social media, or even to message anyone I follow, but today is a different day. See, with this election behind us, the outcome, especially in our state, compels me to pen a little ditty to you. We all remember the 'protests' in Madison a few years back over the election and action of Governor Walker and wonder if we, as concerned conservatives, should respond in the same manner.

Should we take time from work to storm the capital? Should we obtain fake doctor's notes to get sick time? Should we close down schools to 'prove' our point? Should we trash the state buildings with garbage and bodily fluids? Should we hold hands, chant, scream at and disrupt state government functions? Should we demand our way by organizing sit-ins and block traffic? Should we lay on the floors, kicking and screaming like the petulant five-year-old who didn't get the cereal he/she wanted in the grocery store? Should we threaten the new law makers? Should we demand betterment for the few and forego consideration of the many? Should we demand actions that cost tax-payers millions of dollars?

Or, should we accept the outcome of a democratic election, even though we view it as a detrimental step backwards...a giant turd sandwich that we will have to swallow. Should we use this as a teachable moment for our kids(instead of using them as props)? As the liberal messiah said, "Elections have consequences", and we will surely see them and deal with them the best we can. Accepting an election result does not mean being content with it. Responsible stewards of a representative republic believe the change must come at the ballot box, by educating and talking, not by kicking and screaming and demanding 'your' way. One may, at first glance, feel 'disappointed' in the state of Wisconsin, but it would be wrong to feel that way. Most of the state is a common sense color...only small pockets hold disappointment, and they always will.

So, I/we will go about our daily business as usual...forging our path as self-sufficiently as we possibly can through the ever-increasingly entangled briar patch called government and hoping for a better result next time.

Good times, Al.

By the way, I'm rather offended RT is a far better and more eloquent writer than I am. Me no care for him. He write good.

I was forced to use a bit of an acronym for the name because some liberal might fire RT if they figured out who it was...because they're better than us.

While I know it's rhetorical in nature, I will still answer the question. No, we will not do any of those gutless, selfish things they did. We love our country and the freedoms and responsibilities that accompany being fortunate enough to live in the greatest land ever conceived in the history of mankind. We're better than that. Hell, we're so simple we didn't even spit on returning Vietnam soldiers when they returned. We're Republicans. Um, the economy is booming because of tax cuts.

When the peasants have more disposable income, they tend to invest more and spend more.

Stocks way up. More buyers than sellers.

Customer spending way up. More cash in pockets.

What's amazing is the left still insists this is evil witchcraft.

One of the earliest Ramblings factoids...1% of the population has no problem throwing away their vote on a 3rd party candidate that has no chance of winning regardless because they do not understand the simple concept of "not as bad."

Apparently in AZ, about 3%...but the numbers are skewed, most likely because the Green Party gal is pretty.

Organizer of women's march does her best Louie Farrakhan imitation.

The question is moot. The answer? It's those damn Jews.

As the president said today, you gotta admire how the left sticks together, no matter how terrible the people are they're in bed with.

That Kavanaugh dude is terrible. Now if you'll excuse me, I got a dinner with Keith Ellison. We need to figure out how to eliminate the Jews, and then we're gonna beat up some broads.

11/07/2018 06:38:00 PM

(11/07/2018 02:32:00 PM) - Al

He's right you know. Those that supported him and stood firm, not falling for PC cliches and fictional talking points, won close races.

Every single Dem senator in a battleground state that ignored common sense and voted against Justice Kavanaugh lost. The one that crossed over, Manchin, won easily. What is that Glenn always says? All they have to do is not be crazy and they'd win every time. Instead, crazy and lose. As McConnell and Graham have correctly pointed out, it showed they would do anything. They could not even pretend to give a damn about women long enough to not support Keith Ellison. All fake.

Disheartening to see Governor Walker lose. His policies have saved/earned the Rambling family thousands of dollars. As Instapundit mentioned this morning, an old saying I had kind of forgotten, it's tough to win 3 times. He actually won 3 and lost the 4th. I remember hearing that in a POL SCI class at UWEC many moons ago, and (as often was the case) it was met with immediate skepticism. The caveat is, of course, in a purple state or district. The Republican will almost always win Utah, and the Dem will almost always win Massachusetts. It's difficult not to imagine him landing on his feet; and if he so chooses, could perhaps be more well known nationally than he is now, either in TV, lobbying, or part of President Trump's administration.

By the way, where were charts like this a few days ago? I often discussed how tough it was for the president's party to not lose seats in the midterms, but I had no idea they were this high. W was the only one who gained, a historic anomaly almost certainly due to 9/11 and the patriotic fervor that followed. I also had no idea the House had 43 Republicans retire. Given the power of incumbency, especially when you are forced to run every 24 months, that could well have cost the GOP the majority.

President Trump pointed out the numbers and also the unheard of gains in the Senate. The Kavanaugh fiasco aside, the last minute barnstorming tour certainly cemented some of those wins. President Trump's approval rating was higher than almost all the candidates running, and those that tried to sit on the fence and not support him were soundly defeated. Corker and Flake's loyal to Trump replacements won, in TN, easily. McSally looks to have edged out a win in AZ, unless, of course, Milwaukee hauls out a pile of "absentee" ballots the approximate size of Ted Kennedy's rap sheet in a parallel universe in which he is  a conservative, and, it goes without saying, in another line of work than politics.

It's been about 12 hours and the president is already daring the left, saying he assumes Pelosi will be the speaker. Pelosi is rightly despised by a huge majority of Americans and saying she should be the face of the party is nothing less than brilliant. The standard line of 4d chess is ridiculous at this point. The game he's playing doesn't even have a board. The only way out of it is to have Nancy say "I'm too old, I am just going to dedicate myself to representing my constituents." Can she avoid the quest for power and do that? Doubtful, but time will tell.

(11/06/2018 11:37:00 PM) - Al

90% of the vote in, Governor Walker up 1000 votes, or 0.03%.

Governor Walker has been bouncing between 300 and 1200 votes down the past half hour. Gonna be a late night, though there's still lots of Dane county votes to be counted, who, as we all know, liked Lenin, but felt he was a tad too soft on the opposition for their liking.

Without doing anything but common sense ciphering, imagine if the Dems had spent the $100M they wasted on Beto on coin flip races and had simply rubber stamped Kavanaugh.

We'd probably be looking at 50 or 51 GOP seats in the Senate and 10-15 less in the House. Thank goodness they refuse to use their heads rather than their hearts.

In 2010 during Obama's first mid term election he lost 63 house seats and 6 senate seats. Trump's going to lose like 20 house and GAIN 3-4 senate.--Steve Infante

Certainly not the blue wave many were hoping for. A bit of a wash, though some compromise will be needed...though it was already, as many weak rinos were afraid to, you know, cut spending because it might hurt someone's feelings. Many of them lost because they failed to show the guts needed to survive in DC.

(11/06/2018 10:04:00 PM) - Al

Outside of Dane and Milwaukee counties, Governor Walker usually scores about 60%. Tonight, he's at 58%.

That looks to be the difference. Still a landslide, but not a big enough landslide to make up for the "gimme, gimme, gimme" urban crowd.

11/06/2018 10:04:00 PM

(11/06/2018 09:48:00 PM) - Al

As expected, the GOP will hold the Senate and gain a seat or 2.

As expected, the Dems will take the House, as usually happens for a party after losing the presidency (well, they usually gain seats, so if the majority is slim, as it was, a flip is often the result). One remembers that Reagan's unprecedented economic boom happened with both houses in Dem control, because he was so dim, he had no idea how to lead.*

Sadly, it looks like Governor Walker's reign will come to an end in WI. The Rambling family's wallet has enjoyed his fiscal sanity for many years, as we pay about $500 less in property tax annually than when he took office. I do not expect a financial disaster, as long as the GOP hangs onto both houses. If not, there's little doubt the days of punishing the successful will return because, well, someone has to pay for it, and the have nots need cash, and certainly have none to pay in.

*sarcasm heavily implied

Seen on Twitter today:

I have been called "zaftig" often. Today, a coworker was saying she was described as "zaftig" last night and she was furious about it, saying it was sexist and insulting. Imagine my shock when I looked it up and found it meant "plump, a curvy woman," after thinking it meant "a polite term for sexy" my entire life.

The comments were full of folks who basically told her that most people use the word in the exact manner she had thought it meant.

I've seen this term used for Meghan McCain and Selma Hayek, and I always assumed it was a compliment as well.

Trust me, it beats the hell out of "gray haired" and "fat," which have been the 2 most used descriptive terms for me for 2 decades*.

*Probably longer, but it's my site, so I can try and convince folks it's only been 20 years.

Why you never let your GM's contract expire...

EDIT: Since his title is GM but he is really an assistant, maybe this was considered a promotion and the Dodgers allowed him to interview.

The competition in the AL West seems to be driving the Mariners to sell. It’s unclear as yet how deep the cuts will go, but talks are already opening up. The M’s are chatting with the Rays about catcher Mike Zunino, per Rosenthal (via Twitter). With two years of control remaining, the 27-year-old backstop presents an interesting alternative to the free agent market for catchers. He’s an inconsistent but high-powered offensive performer who is generally seen as a quality defender.--MLBTR

Zunino was the first player I thought of when I read the Mariners might tear it down. The fact the most analytical MLB team seems to agree makes me feel rather intelligent.

He's a quality backstop, and has never hit anything but mistakes in his life. His .300/.462 line the past 3 years makes him a way above average contributor as a catcher, and his 2 years of team control are for his years of 28 and 29.

(11/06/2018 02:45:00 PM) - Al

I've just never seen Ramos as a fit in MIL. Rarely walks, average at best defensively and at framing pitches, and a bit injury prone. He is a plus hitter and has plus power, which as a backstop, means he'll be overpaid and get too many years.

Player A--.343/.441
Player B--.319/.348

Player C--.376/.474
Player D--.359/.382

Ramos will be in his year of 31 next season. A and B are really Jon 30 and younger, and at 31 and over.

C and D is Buster Posey, same thing.

I'm not saying catchers age poorly. They do that just fine without my help.

That said, I'd love Happ on a 1 or 2 year deal. So would every team not rebuilding.

I looked up Segura's contract to check his trade value...5y/$75Mish.

Needless to say, he has value, but very limited. Only a few teams can afford the money part, and those may not feel he's worth prospects of note. I will add his value as a 2B is close to nil, considering the 2B market this offseason. As a SS, there's some, but it's tough not to notice he is past his mythical peak and his OBP and SLG have declined 2 years running.

Edwin Diaz, meanwhile, would garner close to a Yelich like haul, given his age and inexpensive projected salaries.

The president does not do everything perfectly, but he has proven to be a genius at what topics to focus on. In case you have doubts, remember that the left talked and talked about transgender rights in 2016, which not only is controversial, but affects less than 0.5% of the population, which, to steal one of my favorite phrases, is a rounding error of a rounding error.

Couple emails today that the Crew should go after Jed Lowrie. I like him too, but he's projected to get a 3y/$30M deal per MLBTR, and that would be for his age 35-37 seasons...obviously a long and expensive deal for a player one would expect to be more injury prone and fade statistically.

Jed's huge plus is he can play SS as well as 2B/3B, albeit, at a well below average level. He appears to be about average defensively at 2B/3B. The early projections have him almost identical to a guy like Ian Kinsler for next year, who will be far cheaper and is superior in the field.

Taking a woman on a business trip with a male boss used to be commonplace. Now, it's frowned upon or simply a no go. Doesn't matter if she's a VP or an intern. They never considered the long term ramifications. Now, in order to pull another switcheroo, they will look like hypocrites.

I always chuckle on this night each year, when people talk about "getting an extra hour of sleep." Unless you work SUN mornings, you can sleep as late as you want every SUN. Want an extra hour when you wake up at 8? Set the alarm for 9. This ain't brain surgery.

By the way, I'm not saying I'm simple*, but it always fascinates me almost every clock in the house changes itself. We just have to fix the ones on the wall and the microwave and stove.

Top 50 FA's?

They have the Crew ending up with 2 pitchers (Miley and Brach) and Kurt Suzuki, who does not sound like an upgrade at all from what they have at catcher.

Needless to say, I do not see Machado or Harper getting $30M a year, nor 13-14 seasons.

Moustakas and Soria both appear to be possibilities based on the money they were estimated at. Moustakas looks to be one of the best bargains on the list...for instance, McCutchen is estimated to make almost twice as much as Mike, and he's older and plays a far easier defensive spot.

Adam Jones is very similar to McCutchen in age and production, and is guessed to get a 1y/$8M deal, while Lloyd is thought to get 3y/$45M. That seems strange, to say the least.

Add LaMahieu to the list of possible Brewers' additions. Given his outstanding defense and the fact his "off year" can be traced to his low BAbip, he is a a prime candidate to be very attractive to the Brewers...even moreso because he might sign a 1 year "prove it to them" type deal.

Hearing a lot about the Crew trading for Realmuto, as he's a top 5 catcher and in his prime, and supposedly good buddies with Yelich.

Well...he has 2 years of team control. Yelich had 6. Many seem to think Realmuto will bring in a haul similar to Yelich, perhaps a top 100 prospect, a top 200, and a couple others that are solid, if not upper echelon. Woodruff, Ray, Hiura, Burnes, Turang, and Peralta would be the prospects that could be considered top 100 quality, though Corbin and Brandon have too much time in. The next level would probably include names like Dubon, Houser, Lutz, Brown. Then add in a couple more good, not great types. Nottingham might well be one of those.

And don't forget, Realmuto is not immune from collision at the plate cost cost him much of his 2 remaining campaigns.

I think it goes against Stearns' penchant for adding team control and would kind of be a "let's make a run at it before we fall apart," and I do not see any sign of falling apart. This is a young team with great depth.

I said once Grandal was a near perfect fit. I have said often he always looks weak on defense against the Crew, and it extended to the entire postseason. That said, his metrics are very good, and heck, he might just have less interest and come cheaper after struggling in the postseason. The analytics team will probably have plenty of data if it was just a small sample or bad luck. One thing about excellent pitch framers (which Grandal is always considered top 5 in MLB), they often catch the ball early, which means they are prone to catcher's interference and "whiffing" on the catch entirely. Much of the brewhaha about him were balls in the dirt that were bad wild pitches. When people look for things to complain about, they usually find them. I recall right after the Crew picked up Kratz, message boards complained about "all those pitches he missed." In reality, he got crossed up a couple times and also had no idea how Hader and others pitches moved.

Small samples and bad days happen. We also have no idea if he was 100% that final month. Simple things are a lot harder when you're in pain.

Garcia is a very good strong side platoon option at either middle infield position, and he is not an automatic out versus LHP either. The Cards must have thought he was too spendy as he was arby eligible for the first time, but he's a fine pickup by the Padres. 2B and SS's who don't get out 35% of the time are few and far between.

On a related note, given the Crew's position near the bottom of the waiver wire, I would expect them to claim players who have some potential and at least one option remaining, especially hard throwing pitchers with some ceiling. If nothing else, they can then try and pass them through waivers, as most teams already passed on them once, and then outright them to the minors. It costs spare change to do this, when compared to the millions it costs to sign a first round pick, some of whom never spend a day in the majors.

I'll mention this here, but SD may not wish to keep Travis Jankowski, as he is a super 2 and has never performed as expected as a former 1st round pick. He's actually not bad offensively against RHP, and has elite speed and defense, and has always walked a lot. Roster Resource lists him as having a single option for 2019 remaining, in case he would be needed to go down for an extra pitcher at some point. Seemingly, he'd fit in well as a backup OF, assuming Perez returns to keep him on the bench when a lefty is pitching. He'd be a fine add, and if not free, could probably be had for minimal cost.

11/01/2018 02:40:00 PM

(11/01/2018 02:04:00 PM) - Al

Seeing a lot of angst about losing Derek Johnson to the Reds. I have not seen this much concern since...well, the Crew hired him from the Cubs, and many folks did not want anyone from the Cubs, because...I don't know, they're not very bright.

Before that, I recall Mike Maddux leaving was the end of the world...and since then, he's bounced around and lost any luster he once had. The 2 most respected pitching coaches in the past couple decades were probably Leo Mazzone and Dave Duncan. Mazzone lost any illusion he was special when his pitchers suddenly sucked when they weren't named Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, and Neagle. Duncan was renowned, but young pitchers struggled under him while veterans seemed to do well. Many phenoms were dealt away and thrived elsewhere. Since he has left, the Cards have had different ones, but they are consistently bringing up one prospect after another, most which throw really hard, and are cheap and effective.

If you'll recall, SL was one of the last teams to use defensive shifting, which is now as commonplace as, you know, giving vaccines to children...only morons and those that do not believe in math do not do both cases. Looking back, it would appear Duncan hated young adults and not playing defenders in "normal" places. That alone is enough to make one's ability to coach mean a lot less.

The real scary part is, they know it would bankrupt all hospitals and clinics, so the government would have to take them over. It would be socialism in the health care industry. We all know that would lead to DMV or VA style healthcare...go in at 9AM, and at 5PM, told to come back the next day.

Except of course for the ultra wealthy and well connected...they would go to "private" health care "clubs" where they would receive care on know, like we all have today.

Remember, they key is to lower expectations. Once everyone is a have not, even below average is looked at as luxurious. And if there's one thing the government is superb at, it's below average.
